Follow all the latest news live as the British and Irish Lions ’ 37-man squad is announced today. Head coach Warren Gatland has selected 21 forwards and 16 backs and the players were not been told beforehand, finding out along with the rest of the world.

There are plenty of big talking points, like the captaincy, which has been handed to Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones after leading his country to the Six Nations title in the spring. Even then though, Jones may not be guaranteed a starting berth in what is naturally a highly competitive squad pooling the resources of the four nations.

Ireland fly-half Johnny Sexton has been left out of coach Gatland’s 37-man squad, which tours South Africa from 3 July until 7 August. Owen Farrell, Dan Biggar and Finn Russell will be in contention for the fly-half positions. Follow all the latest reaction from the Lions’ squad announcement below.

British and Irish Lions Squad

That just about does it for our live coverage of the British and Irish Lions squad announcement. As often proves true, the prognosticators were almost entirely wrong, with a number of curveballs thrown by Warren Gatland and his staff and plenty to digest among the 37 names.

We’ll have plenty more reaction to the squad over the next few days, and it is little more than a month now until the squad first convenes for a training camp on Jersey (assuming political tensions have eased, of course!). Until then, however, farewell, and do stay safe and well. Thank you for joining us!

Itoje hands over the baton

Louis Rees-Zammit is the most junior tourist this time around, two years younger than Maro Itoje was when he was the youngest in 2017. It is customary for that player to take possession and responsibiliy for the Lions’ cuddly toy mascot BIL, a role fulfilled by this tour’s captain Alun Wyn Jones last time the British and Irish Lions ventured to South Africa.

What tips might Jones have for his team-mate, who ranks as one of the youngest Lions selections ever?

Chris Harris gets the Lions call

Apologies for a third video in this ilk in reasonably quick succesion, but this might be the best yet. A proud moment for Chris Harris, who’d have a pretty good shot of a starting jersey, you’d think, given his defensive aptitude and familiarity with Steve Tandy and Gregor Townsend in defence and attack. He’d be the most similar outside centre to likely opposite Lukhanyo Am, so integral in South Africa’s World Cup triumph, with what each does leading the outside blitz.

Lions Squad - another rather lovely announcement video

A slightly different video, but along similarly pleasing lines.

Attack Coach Gregor Townsend on the squad

“There’s players that really excite me from an attacking point of view. The three tens will be the players I work with most. Finn Russell I know very well, but I’m looking forward to working with Dan Biggar and Owen Farrell as well.

“We are going to have to have more than one type of game. We are going to have to match and bring our own physicality but also have a game of speed, movement and finding space. There are players who can do both things, players who are more suited to a physical game and players more suited to playing wide with ball-in-hand.”

Bath’s British and Irish Lions find out...

It’s been a good week or so for this sort of video, with the NFL Draft last week and the Lions squad selection this. Always good to see someone’s life change on video:

Sam Simmonds makes the Lions squad

England outcast, Exeter star - Sam Simmonds may not be a favourite of Eddie Jones but offers something different for Warren Gatland, with his footwork, pace and genuine X-Factor, as well as a real nose for the line.

Warren Gatland faces the press

“There wasn’t one position we weren’t having a good discussion about which players to name. We sent out over 70 letters to players and picked a squad of 37. All of those players who received letters and didn’t get picked are on that standby list if we get injuries.”

Lions Tour schedule confirmed

The British & Irish Lions and SA Rugby have confirmed a revised Castle Lager Lions Series fixture list and venues.

All eight matches of the Tour will be played in Gauteng or Cape Town to minimise the risks of disruption that could be caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The schedule accommodates stable team bases and training venues and significantly reduces travel.

The Castle Lager Lions Series will now kick off in Gauteng (rather than Cape Town) with three matches against provincial opposition before moving to Cape Town for two more warm-up matches before the first Test at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday 24 July.

The Series then returns to Johannesburg for the second and third Tests at the FNB Stadium.

There is one team change in the revised schedule with the Emirates Lions replacing the SA Invitational team. The adjustment was made to reduce the risks associated with drawing a squad from around the country.

SA Rugby is organising all games in the schedule on the basis they will take place behind closed doors.

  • Saturday 3 July: Emirates Lions v The British & Irish Lions (Emirates Airline Park, Johannesburg) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)
  • Wednesday 7 July: Cell C Sharks v The British & Irish Lions (Emirates Airline Park, Johannesburg) KO 20h00 (SAT) / 19h00 (BST)
  • Saturday 10 July: Vodacom Bulls v The British & Irish Lions (Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)
  • Wednesday 14 July: South Africa ‘A’ v The British & Irish Lions (Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town) KO 20h00 (SAT) / 19h00 (BST)
  • Saturday 17 July: DHL Stormers v The British & Irish Lions (Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)
  • Saturday 24 July: Springboks v The British & Irish Lions (1 st Test, Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)
  • Saturday 31 July: Springboks v The British & Irish Lions (2 nd Test, FNB Stadium, Johannesburg) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)
  • Saturday 7 Aug: Springboks v The British & Irish Lions (3 rd Test, FNB Stadium, Johannesburg) KO 18h00 (SAT) / 17h00 (BST)

The British & Irish Lions Test match against Japan at BT Murrayfield Stadium on Saturday 26 June for the Vodafone Lions 1888 Cup will continue as scheduled. However, owing to the uncertainty created by the coronavirus pandemic, a decision on crowd size will be made nearer the time of the event and in line with the latest Scottish Government guidance. For more information, including ticketing enquiries, please visit: www.lionsrugby.com

“The Covid-19 pandemic has caused considerable disruption to the global sporting calendar, but after discussions with our partners at SA Rugby, we are very pleased to be able to give confirmation of the revised tour schedule,” said Lions managing director Ben Calveley.

“While things will undoubtedly look different to a typical Lions tour, together with SA Rugby we are determined to deliver an uninterrupted Series for the players who will take the field, as well as the many millions of people watching at home.

“We would like to thank all Lions supporters for their patience and understanding as we continue to navigate our way through the impact of the pandemic, and also extend our enormous gratitude to our commercial partners for their incredible ongoing support.”

All ticket holders for the original schedule will receive a full refund. SA Rugby also confirmed that SA resident ticket holders would have first right to purchase tickets for the revised schedule if restrictions on attendance at sports events were lifted.

Supporters who have booked ticket-inclusive packages through Lions Rugby Travel and its appointed Official Sub-Agents have been contacted separately with the options available, as have those who had successfully purchased Test match tickets via the Lions ticket ballot.

If you live in the UK you must follow Covid 19 rules where you live: England , Scotland , Wales and Northern Ireland . South Africa is currently categorised as ‘red’ for Covid 19 by the UK Government. The UK government states that you should not travel to red list countries or territories for leisure purposes.

“We’re delighted to be able to finally confirm the revised schedule after months of scenario planning and shifting circumstances,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“It has been a challenging process with dozens of variables to consider but we believe we have arrived at a schedule that minimises the risks associated with the pandemic.

“We are hopeful that restrictions on attendance at sports events will be relaxed but, for the moment, we are planning for an event behind closed doors. If that requirement changes, then we’ll assess the options available and make the necessary decisions based on the restrictions in place.

“I would like to thank our supporters and commercial partners for their patience over these many months. This is not the Castle Lager Lions Series we imagined when we started our planning more than two and a half years ago but, in the circumstances, I think it is an exciting prospect.

“After all the uncertainty it’s a relief to be able to put a stake in the ground and confirm what the Series will look like – I’m sure most of us can’t now wait for kick off.”

Roux said that the priority throughout had been to ensure the Castle Lager Lions Series went ahead and he thanked the staffs of the unique joint venture (that was established to run the Tour) for the hard work and sleepless nights they had endured to arrive at a workable solution.

“The scenarios changed on a weekly basis with options on three different continents workshopped and interrogated over the past few months to reach this point,” said Roux.

“Throughout we have had a single-minded goal to ensure the Series went ahead. The British & Irish Lions only visit our shores once every 12 years and to deny our players and our supporters the opportunity of sharing in the experience of what is invariably an event that passes into folklore would have been a devastating blow. We’re now ready to deliver the Series.”

The eight-match Tour of South Africa will be shown live and exclusively on Sky Sports.

The British & Irish Lions have toured South Africa on 13 previous occasions, with the first Tour taking place in 1891. In that time, the Lions have won four Test series, lost eight with one drawn. Their overall record against the Springboks is played 46, won 17, lost 23 and drawn six.

  • 7 Jul 2021 Preamble
  • 7 Jul 2021 Teams

British & Irish Lions’ Duhan Van der Merwe scores a try despite Manie Libbok of Cell C Sharks.

Victorious captain Iain Henderson is here.

“We’ve had an interesting day, for sure, but fair play to the lads who were on tenterhooks waiting to see what would happen. We didn’t get to do some of our matchday routines, but that’s the nature of touring but we achieved what we set out to do and we dug in really well when defending.”

And so the Sharks and the spectre of Covid is defeated for today at least. Some good individual performances combined with some at times irresistable offloading stacked up a big score. Still some defensive drills to work on, but we have to make allowances for the chaos in the build up.

FULL TIME! Sharks 7 - 54 Lions

80 mins . Jack Conan gathers the restart and Finn Russell chip the ball out to gratefully end the strangest of days with a big win

TRY! Sharks 7 - 54 Lions (Josh Adams)

79 mins. Rees-Zammit has another dart up the right and sets the ball up for the Lions to spray it left through hands via Beard and Faletau in the backline to feed Adams to once again score.

British and Irish Lions’ Josh Adams scores a try as Sharks’ Thaakir Abrahams attempts to make a tackle.

Finn Russell takes his time then slots in perfectly from the touchline.

77 mins. It’s reached that point in the game where Rory Sutherland, a prop, has broken than line and sprinted 4o metres upfield like an enlarged Mighty Mouse, but the fun is ruined when his offload can’t find a hand and the Sharks regain possession.

TRY! Sharks 7 - 47 Lions (Duhan van der Merwe)

75 mins. Hamish Watson is on for Josh Navidi and his first meaningful contribution it to win a turnover after another decent short period of Sharks possession. A few phases later the Lions come left and a cheeky one hand slap-pass from Daly find van der Merwe to grab another.

Russell whams a great conversion over from wide out.

72 mins. Josh Navidi is over the line after Maro Itoje slaps the ball clear and the Welsh backrow gallops forty metres to score. But the TMO thinks Itoje was offside...

The ref agrees, no try!

71 mins. Again the Sharks repeatedly come but this time the Lions defence stand firm and legal, turn it over and Rees-Zammit boots it clear.

69 mins. Possession is won by Sharks and the Lions are offside once again in defence as the home team pound away from five metres out. They tap and go quickly but are inches short on another offside penalty. I’m very surprised there hasn’t been a formal warning for the Lions from Peyper yet.

67 mins . Sharks on the attack in the Lions 22 via another strong James Venter carry but they struggle to control possession and Adams clear. On the next possession the Lions are penalised for not rolling away and Sharks will have another lineout deep in opposition territory.

Ken Owens for Cowan-Dickie Taulupe Faletau for Tom Curry Jack Conan for Sam Simmonds

TRY! Sharks 7 - 40 Lions (Louis Rees-Zammit)

62 mins . Adams fields a grubber, carries up to his own ten metre line and offloads out of a two-man tackle to Rees-Zammit who burns away from the defence and scores from 60 metres.

British and Irish Lions’ Louis Rees-Zammit puts the burners on to score.

Russell adds the two.

TRY! Sharks 7 - 33 Lions (Josh Adams)

57 mins . Sharks centre Marius Louw snaffles a turnover on his own 22 but spills it backwards which allows Josh Adams following through to hack the ball on and score. A heartbreaker for Louw who did well and has had a great game.

British and Irish Lions’ Josh Adams is congratulated by Duhan van der Merwe after scoring a try.

Finn Russell, on for Owen Farrell, converts.

55 mins. Louw throws an outrageous dummy and shimmy in midfield just inside his own half and sets off on a powerful run into Lions territory. Once again the Sharks put some solid phases together before Kok gathers his own kick and feeds the lock Ruben van Heerden who is a little isolated and allows a grateful covering Ali Price to clamp onto the ball and win a relieving ruck penalty.

53 mins . Tadhg Furlong and Rory Sutherland are on in the Lions front row for Vunipola and Fagerson.

TRY! Sharks 5 - 26 Lions (James Venter)

52 mins. Lovely try this. Sharks are attacking up the right hand side, running angles off each runner to allow multiple offloads before the ball finds Venter on the right touchline who shakes off a tackler to touch down.

Bosch converts.

49 mins. Aki drives the Lions into the 22 but his offload can’t find Tom Curry’s supporting run and the ball is turned over for Bosch to clear. However the ball is coming back via strong run back into the Sharks half from Josh Adams.

46 mins. An intricate short scissor move is attempted by the Lions forwards at the rear of a lineout in the Sharks 22 but the ball goes to ground. It’s not forward so play continues before Lions obstruct in attack and allow Bosch to clear the lines.

43 mins. An early penalty for Sharks at the scrum as their modest success there continues, but they can’t capitalise as an attempted chip and chase ends with a Lions penalty for Louw shoving Farrell in the back off the ball.

You’re all reading the football coverage now, aren’t you?

SECOND HALF!

40 mins. Owen Farrell restarts proceedings

“Is South Africa’s plan to give the Lions such poor opposition, who can’t defend (see Sharks here), that it won’t matter that South Africa have played once in the last 19 months by the first test?” asks John Ryan. “This is some of the worst defence you’ll ever see.”

Yep, they are not best in the organisation stakes the Sharks, but the Lions rearguard is nothing to write you Mam about either. Better opposition would be over the line a few time this half methinks.

Mid-way Musings.

It looked like it was going be very grim indeed for Sharks after six minutes. While 26-0 is still fairly grim it could have been a lot worse but for them putting together some periods of decent possession and giving the Lions no small amount of bother at set-piece.

Some lovely offloading and attacking phases from the Lions, but they look a poor team in defence at times, and the fact they haven’t conceded is down to a lack of precision from their opponents at key times rather than a convincing defensive effort.

PEEP! That’s the last action of the half and the team retreat down the tunnel.

TRY! Sharks 0 - 26 Lions (Bundee Aki)

40 mins. From a lineout in the Sharks half, the Lions find Simmonds again on an in-to-out angle in midfield. The Exeter man drops the hammer, sears past Louw and runs free into the Sharks 22. Off another lineout a few phases later, Aki picks up and drives over from five metres.

Bundee Aki goes over.

Farrell makes not mistake from the tee.

36 mins . A lively, jinking run from Thaakir Abrahams off his right wing carries Sharks through a gap in the Lions defence before Adams and van de Merwe close the door in the 22. The home side can’t capitalise however as they spill the ball on the next phase.

Game of two performances by the Lions so far: with the ball, decent; without it, not so much.

34 mins. Sam Simmonds has his first carry in the loose as he’s fed by Farrell in midfield. He sucks in a few tacklers and the Lions push the ball left through hands and are nearly in again but for the ball being spilled 5m from the line by van der Merwe.

31 mins. The Sharks front row of Khwezi Mona, Fez Mbatha, Khutha Mchunu is having a proper go at their more storied opponents and they win their second scrum penalty after forcing Mako Vunipola to the ground under pressure.

TRY! Sharks 0 - 19 Lions (Duhan van der Merwe)

27 mins. From a scrum on halfway Owen Farrell fires a bullet gubber into open pasture for van der Merwe to chase which the winger taps forward with his boot and dives on to score in the left corner. Farrell’s first missed conversion of tour follows.

British & Irish Lions’ Duhan Van der Merwe chases a loose ball to score a try.

Sharks defence completely all over the shop off first phase there, but in there defence they are a winger down with Kok in the bin.

24 mins. Navidi snaffles the ball in midfield from a Louw handling error and the Lions fire it right for Farrell to slide a diagonal kick for Rees-Zammit to chase. The winger gets there but holds onto the ball a little too long the on the ground and is penalised.

NO TRY! Luke Cowan-Dickie.

21 mins. A catch and drive in the lineout has the Lions pack over the line, but Cowan-Dickie gets himself into a poor position on his back and can’t place the ball down over his head without spilling it. The TMO confirms Ref Peyper’s suspicions and it’s not given.

YELLOW CARD! Werner Kok (Sharks)

20 mins. Sharks spill the ball to bring a decent phase of possession. It looks like the Lions have lost the ball in the own 22 as Ali Price throws a big wild pass behind van der Merwe, but the big wing regathers and puts his team back on the attack. The ball is through hands and multiple offloads quickly and the Lions go 70 metres upfield before Kok dives on the ruch and is shown his marching orders for 10 minutes.

17 mins. Marius Louw trucks a big carry up into the Lions 22 and the tourists give a penalty away first for offside again, then another for a high tackle. The regular problem of poor defence discipline takes hold again.

On the next attack the Sharks are up within inches of the line but Tom Curry rips the ball out of the ruck for a turnover. He looked very much off his feet, but Ref Peyper is happy.

14 mins. After five unproductive phases of short carries around the ruck Sharks spray it right and then back to the left for the leonine coiffured Werner Kok to break free on the touchline. He beats Ali Price but can’t find an inside runner with his pass with the line beckoning from 20 or so metres.

12 mins. A knock on at the lineout through pressure from Adam Beard brings the Sharks mini-possession to a frustrating end. At the resulting scrum the Lions win a penalty of their own which Farrell wallops it into touch on the Sharks 10m line.

9 mins. Sharks have a penalty after Lions drift offside in the tackle line which Curwin Bosch send out for a lineout in the opposition 22. First defensive test of the game coming for the tourists.

TRY! Sharks 0 - 7 Lions (Duhan van der Merwe)

7 mins. Mako Vunipola bumps a couple and the Lions recycle quickly and run a lovely attacking pattern through hands left to van der Merwe who is round Thaakir Abrahams to touch down.

Duhan Van der Merwe goes over for the Lions’ second try.

Speed of ball and precision of passing is killing the Sharks at the minute.

Another two points for Farrell extends the lead.

TRY! Sharks 0 - 7 Lions (Josh Adams)

3 mins . The Lions put the ball through hands early, going left then all the way right before Rees-Zammit nips a grubber forward but is beaten to it by the covering Manie Libbok. On the next Lions possession there’s two smart offloads in the Sharks 22 and the final one finds Josh Adams to make it 6 in three matches for today’s fullback.

British & Irish Lions’ Josh Adams runs in a try.

Farrell converts.

1 min. Ref Jaco Peyper peeps his whistle allowing Curwin Bosch send the ball into the smoky haze left by the pre-match pyrotechnics and we’re underway

@bloodandmud the big question is about playing load. I think @sirianmcgeechan is correct in suggesting a ten day break after today. Unless those in isolation are somehow selectable on Saturday — Feargus Woods Dunlop (@thisactorslife) July 7, 2021

Well, the good news is there is no game on Saturday Fergus as the Bulls game has already been postponed, so the next outing is a week today vs South Africa A. This should give all the players who have played a decent break and eat into some Covid isolation time for the others.

A straight bat from the Lions MD there , which is no surprise given the high likelihood something like this was bound to happen and protocols are no doubt in place.

However, we’re all looking on the gloomy side here and missing that the British & Irish Lions has now become like a club third team fixture - basically one step away from borrowing players from the Sharks to make up numbers.

Does this threaten “the integrity of the tour” (whatever that means)? I say no. Nothing harks back to the amateur era in the way the Lions do and a midweek game feeling exactly like a club match, complete with all it’s ramshackle imperfections only gives it some more charm.

Barely any players? No crowd? At least three lads not expecting to play so had to rush straight from work? I played a game like that once at Trinant in the South East Wales league.

Ben Calveley MD of the Lions is here:

“We’ve had one positive case in the management team with four close contacts; we’ve tested everyone and there is one other positive, with a close contact and so we’ve isolated who we needed to. We’ve taken advice from our medical advisory group and they’ve confirmed it’s OK to proceed”

“No bubbles are impervious as we’ve found throughout the world of sport, but we’re pleased we have acted quickly, taken advice and that the fixture is going ahead. We’re here in South African and our intention is complete all the games we can here in South Africa.”

“Nearly all of the Lions tour party have been double jabbed and it’s not for me to answer whether the Springboks have been vaccinated. Again, we see this as a positive, we’re here to play rugby and we’re really pleased we have a fixture on tonight”

What about all this then, eh? Let me have your thoughts on the email via tweet @bloodandmud . Much to discuss, without ball being dropped in anger yet.

One upshot of the Covid drama in the build up is that the Lions backline as was originally named has been decimated. Ali Price and Owen Farrell replace Gareth Davies and Dan Biggar at half-back while Josh Adams moves to fullback as Louis Rees-Zammit comes in on the wing. Aki and Daly in the centres are as you were, at least.

In the less disrupted part of the park, Warren Gatland selects his third captain in three games as Ulster and Ireland lock Iain Henderson is given the armband. A great reward for a player who doesn’t get the notices he deserves for his class and form over a sustained period at international level. Much babbled excitement in the build-up has focused on the back-row of debutant Tom Curry, plus Josh Navidi and Sam Simmonds - a trio with muscular dynamism aplenty.

The Lions bench is now a 7-1 (!) split with Finn Russell the man covering the entire backline among other changes. I, for one, want to see Hamish Watson and Taulupe Faletau in the centres at some point

Sharks make one change to a team that recently lost to Western Province, with young captains Phepsi Buthelezi bac in at No 8. In a taste of things to come for the Lions, Sharks have names six forwards on the bencch

Welcome to Johannesburg, where the British & Irish Lions are facing Cell C Sharks, now of the United Rugby Championship.

Make the most of this match everyone as it may be the last one we have to enjoy as COVID takes its grip on various squads across South Africa like a microscopic, spiteful, armoured sticky-bob. The tour match vs Bulls is already not going to happen ever postponed from this coming Saturday, while the Springboks have cancelled their second Test versus Georgia due to outbreaks in all the respective squads. And then this game was hanging by a thread after a member of Lions management and two players tested positive and we awaited a rapid battery of PCR test results. But the news was positive (not in that way) and the game is goer.

The Sharks have mustered a squad for today, but they are shorn of their internationals and previous form on Lions tours - two matches, two Sharks losses - suggests this should be a handy win for the visitors. But a win being a given against such opposition means that Warren Gatland can make sure that by the end of today everyone in his squad has had game-time, and he also has the opportunity to try out new combinations such as Bundee Aki and Elliot Daly in the midfield.

South Africa at large was much unimpressed with the Lions showing vs the other Lions at the weekend, and quite a few back home were unimpressed also. Gatland won’t give one about that as his eyes are firmly on what happens from 24 July onwards, but some improvement is ruck tidiness in attack and defence, consolidation of the attacking maul, better discipline when scrambling, and a further development of the flashes of Gregor Townsend’s inventive attacking patterns would be welcome

BEST MOMENTS OF THE 2013 BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS TOUR IN AUSTRALIA THUMB

While the British and Irish Lions Tour to Australia might be over a year away, with the Six Nations wrapping up, there is never a more opportune moment to look at who the star performers could be.

Sky Sports will exclusively show the 2025 British and Irish Lions tour of Australia, with all three Tests and six warm-up matches to be shown live.

The agreement sees Sky Sports broadcast its eighth consecutive Lions Tour, with the partnership starting in 1997 with the iconic 2-1 series win over South Africa.

James Cole and Megan Wellens discuss their picks for who would've potentially caught Andy Farrell's eye during the 2024 Six Nations tournament to put their name in the frame for the British and Irish Lions' tour in 2025.

Lions, Premiership, URC announce partnership

Lions Tours: 0

Ellis Genge progressively got better throughout the Six Nations and it culminated in a brilliant scrummaging performance against France's Uini Atonio.

Atonio has six, yes six, stone on Genge but the England man worked hard, got low, and showed what an asset he can be in that front row.

He is also a leader in the England camp and a voice like that will be essential for life on Tour.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso

Feyi-Waboso

Position: Wing. Centre

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso made quite the impression in the few games he played for England, his start against Ireland cementing him as a real future star.

Ireland could not figure out how to stop his combination of power and pace and if he can continue to grow in the England shirt, he will be a certain name on Farrell's list for 2025.

Ollie Lawrence

England's Ollie Lawrence (centre) is tackled by France's Thomas Ramos (left) during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Groupama Stadium in Lyon, France. Picture date: Saturday March 16, 2024.

Position: Centre

Another man who had a tournament to remember, when Ollie Lawrence came back into the England side, he showed why he is lethal in that centre position.

He can play any role required - if you need him running hard lines he will, but if you need him using his brute strength to power up the field, he will also do that in abundance.

If he is partnered with a certain Ireland centre, it could be a sensational combination.

Jamie Gibson-Park

Ireland's scrum-half Jamison Gibson-Park

Position: Scrum-half

Ultimately, Jamie Gibson-Park is the best scrum-half out there for the Lions at the moment.

His consistency for Ireland is second to none, and his kicking game and match awareness have been integral to the Ireland system that has seen them dominate so much.

A calm head is always needed in such a vital role and Gibson-Park can fulfil that for Farrell.

Ireland Six Nations

Lions Tours: 1 (2021)

Why wouldn't you put this guy on the plane? His sensational World Cup performance plus his performance at the Six Nations would have Bundee Aki down as a dead cert starter for the Lions at the moment.

His ability to make metres is not matched by any worldwide and he will be a lot for Australia to handle.

It could also be exciting to see him partner someone like Lawrence who also has power and pace.

Jack Crowley

Crowley

Position: Fly-half

A reward for a seamless transition, Jack Crowley can be a solid fly-half option for the Lions.

He has an old head on young shoulders and is never fazed when he makes a mistake, plus he can kick goals like the best of them.

Not many could step into Johnny Sexton's shoes and perform and he did that brilliantly for Ireland.

Finn Russell

Scotland's Finn Russell kicks a penalty

Finn Russell will always bring that flair and you know on a Lions Tour he would enjoy himself creatively on the pitch.

Right now, he is probably the most experienced and in-form fly-half option for the Lions and combined with some other big stars, we could see some Russell flair on show.

He also is a sensational goal kicker and that will be vital for Farrell's side.

lions tour 2021 team

Duhan Van der Merwe

Duhan Van der Merwe's hat-trick gave Scotland a solid lead in the contest

Position: Wing

A man who can create something spectacular all on his own, Duhan Van der Merwe showed why his pace and power on the wing is pretty much unmatched.

There are not many as big as him who can show individual finesse like he does and he already has a solid understanding with Russell that could serve the Lions well in 2025.

Zander Fagerson

Scotland's Zander Fagerson (centre) scores their first try during the Guinness Six Nations match at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy. Picture date: Saturday March 9, 2024.

Fagerson is one of the few players in these picks who went on the 2021 Lions Tour. However, he did not play.

The Glasgow Warriors prop has battled against the best of them and could be a solid option off the bench when that front row needs a new breath of life.

Mason Grady

Mason Grady made his mark in Wales' final game against Italy

Position: Centre, Wing

Mason Grady didn't get a whole host of minutes across the Six Nations, but when he did grace the field, Grady sparkled.

Scoring in the dying moments of their clash vs Italy, Grady showed that he offers something different with his dazzling footwork and could be someone that Farrell could take on Tour as the Lions look to the future.

George North's iconic moment for British and Irish Lions against Australia

Dafydd Jenkins

Dafydd Jenkins could get some big leadership lessons on a British and Irish Lions Tour

Position: Lock

The one thing a young captain needs is experience and quickly and a Lions Tour could offer the perfect environment for Wales skipper Dafydd Jenkins to grow.

It would be a vital opportunity for him to use his own voice but learn from other huge leaders across the nations as Wales continue their rebuilding journey.

Aaron Wainwright

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout performers in a difficult Six Nations

Position: No 8, Flanker

Aaron Wainwright was one of Wales' standout players in the Six Nations, making metres like no other in that Wales jersey.

His energy was electric and his enthusiasm even when under the pump could be a key asset for the Lions.

The fifth nation: The exiles available

Owen farrell.

Stuart Lancaster: Owen Farrell excited by French challenge

Position: Fly-half, Centre

Lions Tours: 3

Although the former England captain may be out of contention for international selection with his move to Racing 92 imminent, he can very much still be picked for the Lions Tour.

As England's top points scorer ever and with three Tours under his belt, his experience could be invaluable and what a storyline it would be to see father and son in action.

lions tour 2021 team

Courtney Lawes

Lawes on Lions

Position: Lock, Flanker

Lions Tours: 2

Lawes retired from international duty after the 2023 Rugby World Cup,but he made sure to make clear that he still sees starring for the Lions in his future.

With a year out in France to come, Lawes could earn himself a shirt and when someone with 105 caps comes knocking, it is hard to turn them down.

Henry Arundell

Henry Arundell

Position: Full-back, wing

Henry Arundell was originally given a special exemption to represent England after London Irish went into administration, but after making his move to Racing 92 permanent, Arundell has locked his door to international duty for now.

However, Arundell has been a constant star and his pace at the back could be huge for the Lions if they come calling.

He knows how to score tries and in a Lions shirt, he could thrive.

England vs Brazil LIVE! Friendly result, match stream, latest updates today

England vs Brazil LIVE!

An injury-hit Brazil beat England 1-0 in coach Dorival Junior’s first match in charge as 17-year-old substitute Endrick scored the 80th-minute winner in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday. Endrick, who is due to join Real Madrid in July from Palmeiras, tapped into an empty net after England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could only parry a shot from Vinicius Jr. on the break.

The South Americans, who have struggled in their World Cup qualifiers and gave debuts to five players in their starting 11, had a good chance when Lucas Paqueta hit the post in the 35th minute. England, also missing key players through injury including captain Harry Kane, barely tested Bento who was making his first appearance for Brazil in goal, despite coach Gareth Southgate opting for an attack-minded line-up.

England continue their preparations for Euro 2024 on Tuesday when they host Belgium in a friendly at Wembley while Brazil face Spain in Madrid the same day. Read the game back below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Dan Kilpatrick, Malik Ouzia and Dom Smith at Wembley.

94min: Enough time for Endrick to be denied a second goal! He is the youngest ever goalscorer in this stadium’s history.

91min: Four minutes added on.

85min: England are pushing but this half has been far less impressive than the first.

80min: Endrick gives Brazil the lead! A ball through the middle sets Vinicius through, his shot is saved and the 17-year-old tucks home into an empty net!

75min: Now it’s time for Mainoo’s debut! Gallagher makes way as Rashford replaces Gordon.

71min: Pereira and Endrick are on for Brazil, replacing Rodrygo and Paqueta.

70min: Gallagher hits the deck inside the area but it does look a bit weak. Referee waves the protests away.

67min: All three are coming on! Bellingham, Chilwell and Maguire make way.

65min: But it looks like Gomez and Dunk will be introduced first.
