A calm and quiet morning

Lovely place. On a calm and quiet morning, you can listen to the rushing river water flowing next to the resort. Though there aren't many food options, whatever they provide inside this jungle is quite appreciable. Must-visit for at least one night stay.

It's truly remarkable how they have upheld the charm of this delightful establishment while delivering exceptional service and meeting customer expectations in such a secluded destination.

Excellent Service!

On the last two days of August 2023, we took upon ourselves a challenge. We embarked on our first ever road trip with Tukixu, our two month old daughter, much against the wish of our elders for obvious reasons! As daunting as it appeared while planning the trip, the execution I must admit was way smoother while the joy of returning home in one piece was unparalleled. We tactfully selected such a place, where we could relax amid nature, digitally detox and respond to the call of our round the clock parental duty. Shimlipal National Park it was! The forest is closed during the monsoons which meant no sightseeing. Connectivity was out of bounds which meant you could automatically be off your phones and the @lulung_aranyanivas resort was tucked right in the middle of the forest, beside the Palpala river making it the best place to relax amid nature. The staff greeted us with folded palms and escorted us to a lovely riverside cottage which we would call home for the next two days. The next two days went by in the blink of a eye. As I write this post from my home in Kolkata, I am already missing the serenity of the place. After ages we read a book, stopped scrolling our phones mindlessly, stopped consuming digital content, slept for a longer stretch, so did our baby, sat idle staring into the dense moist forest and sipping coffee, raising a toast to parenthood with lime juice, enjoying a quick dip in the pool, taking an evening stroll to the nearby river bed, gulping down hearty meals in the backdrop of two hourly feeding, diaper changing and rocking our infant to sleep. This was a new kind of holiday which we experienced and would not give it up for anything. :) Our first trip was done and dusted and emerging victorious, we are now excited for many more to come. We have also vlogs coming up soon.

What To See and Do

The prime tourist site here is the Similipal Tiger Reserve . The lush forest dotted with tall Sal trees is a sanctuary to 1,076 mammal species, 29 types of reptiles and 231 bird species. It is one of the best spots to hone wildlife photography skills. The area is also known for its wondrously exotic orchids, which further elevates its scenic beauty.

The Barehipani Waterfall is one of the most picturesque locations in Similipal. The second-highest waterfall in India originates from the Budhabalanga River that flows over the mountain. It is a two-tier fall with abundant water flow throughout the year, and the sight is sheer grandness. Another waterfall located within the periphery of the reserve is the Joranda Falls. Even though it is comparatively smaller than Barehipani, it is equally majestic.

Apart from this, you can also visit the local tribal market to lay your hands on some unique herbs and spices. You will get a chance to interact with the local folks. Moreover, if you visit Kuliyan Village, a few kilometres away from the town, you will find the famous Dokra artwork there.

You can indulge in some fun activities in the village,  too. The locals let you rent a cycle to move within the forest trails and soak in every ounce of fresh air. If you enjoy bird watching, you will find some perfect spots for indulgence. You can also put on your trekking shoes and explore the lofty regions towards the north, early in the morning–an unmissable activity.

Where To Stay

Similipal has multiple hotels and eco-lodges for a comfortable stay. The most sought-after stay option is the Aranya Nivas Resort . Nestled along the banks of River Palpala, it offers luxurious accomodations with unique food options, star gazing site, and a bonfire with arranged tribal dance performances (on request).

The Captial O Chac Chi Hotel and Suites, and the OFDC Eco-Tourism Complex are also great options. For a more pocket-friendly experience, you can look for shelter arrangements in the Similipal Nature Camp.

Where To Eat

Being a quaint non-commercial town, you will not find a wide array of restaurants. However, the tourism department offers authentic local cuisine options to tourists.

Getting There

You will be able to access the town via roadways since they have three openings. The closest airport to get there would be from Kolkata, West Bengal. Arriving at Bhubaneswar, Odisha is also an option even though it is 20 km longer than the  Kolkata  route. The nearest railway stations are Baripada, Odisha and Balasore, Odisha. The area is well connected by taxis.

The best time to visit would be during the months of October to March. Since Simlipal is a hilly region, it is advisable to pack warmer clothes for the trip. Having a comfortable pair of shoes would help with the trekking .

Similipal National Park

The 2750-sq-km Similipal National Park is famous for its tigers, though sightings are relatively rare. Wild elephants on the other hand are far easier to spot. You'll need your own wheels to do a safari. Several lodgings in Baripada, 25km from the park entrance, can arrange transport into the park, as can Odisha Tourism in Bhubaneswar.

History of Similipal National Park

odisha tourism similipal booking

The biodiverse region of the Simlipal National Park and Tiger Reserve was once a hunting ground for the then royalties who used to rule the place. Then in 1956, it got a formal designation as a tiger reserve. Later, in May 1973 it was under the Project Tiger.

The “Mugger Crocodile Scheme” was initiated in 1979. Simlipal was then declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Government of Odisha in the same year. At that time the sanctuary covered an area of 2200 sq. kilometers. Then again in 1980, the State Government proposed to make a part of the sanctuary a National Park, and the park’s area was expanded in the following years.

Then again, the State Government proposed a certain portion of land to be the National Park in 1980. The area of the park was increased in the latter years and was also recognized as a biosphere reserve by the Indian Government. It also joined the World Network of Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO in 2009.

Many people live within the park’s boundaries, which is why Simlipal is not yet a fully developed national park. It is one of the 18 biospheres of the Indian subcontinent and boasts a rich and diverse wildlife.

The natural beauty of Similipal National Park

odisha tourism similipal booking

Nature’s charms are always promising. In Simlipal, there is silence in the atmosphere but this harmoniously blends with the sounds of the animals and birds. Rolling hills and sprawling forestland make the landscape magical. Through the terrain, the river streams make their way very smoothly, adding to the place’s charm.

The park has two distinctive zones: the Southern and Northern zones. Both these zones are absolutely different in terms of their beauty and panorama. The southern zone exhibits highlands like Khariburu and Meghasani. This is also the core region of the park. The northern zone is mostly for tourists. It has mesmerizing sloping mountains and alluring destinations such as Joranda, Barehipani, Lulung, and Sitakund.

The mind-boggling surrounding of the park looks like a mystical land. Flora and fauna contribute to the main beauty of this place. Being in the eastern highland, the biome includes moist deciduous forest, tropical moist deciduous forest, dry deciduous hill forest, sal forest, and tropical moist broadleaf forest. The perching sunrays through the canopy of the trees give the park a characteristic look.

Another feature is the stretched grassland and the savannas. It exactly looks like the one that we generally see on the National Geographic channel. The fresh aroma fills the air which generally comes from the aromatic and medicinal plants of the region.

Speaking of the fauna, the park and the protected area have their soul due to them. There is a tiger, sambar, leopard, chausingha, giant squirrel, Mugger Crocodile, etc. The colorful creatures like the Malabar pied hornbill, gray hornbill, Indian trogon, etc, are also very impressive.

The national park is also famed for its waterfalls which blend perfectly into this nature’s paradise. Way more beauty hides in the woodlands that will take you over in all different ways.

Similipal Tiger Reserve

About Similipal Tiger Reserve

Similipal massif, lying on the South Eastern corner of Deccan Peninsula in the Mayurbhanj District of Odisha, is one of the largest tracts of contiguous forest with immeasurable ecosystem service values. Similipal comes under Deccan Peninsular Bio-geographic Zone, Chhotanagpur Province and Mahanadian Region. The vast terrain of Similipal with wide altitudinal, climatic and topographic variations, criss-crossed by large number of perennial streams, harbours a unique blend of Western Ghats, Eastern Ghats and Sub-Himalayan plant species. The floristic composition indicates a connecting link between South Indian and North Eastern Sub-Himalayan Species. Forest is predominantly moist mixed deciduous forest with tropical semi-evergreen forest in areas with suitable microclimatic conditions and sporadic patches of dry deciduous forests and grasslands. It forms the largest watershed of northern Odisha.

Peafowl

With wide altitudinal and climatic variation, the rich diversity of habitats and mosaic of landscapes, Similipal supports a fascinating floral & faunal composition. The entire landscape supports more than 1352 plant species with 94 species of orchids of which three species are endemic. It is also the home of some endemic cultivars and aquatic grass species. It houses 7 % of the flowering plants and 8% orchids of India. There are 55 species of mammals, 361 species of birds, 62 species of reptiles, 21 species of amphibians and many species of insects and micro fauna. It holds the highest tiger (Panthera tigris) population in Odisha, and harbours the only population of melanistic tigers in the world. Other carnivores found here are leopard (Panthera pardus), leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis), fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus), jungle cat (Felis chaus) and wolf (Canis lupus). The active management of mugger (Crocodylus palustris) has revived its population on the banks of the rivers Khairi and Deo. Similipal Tiger Reserve is also home to the largest population of elephants in Odisha. The major ungulate species found here are sambar (Rusa unicolor), chital (Axis axis), barking deer (Muntiacus vaginalis), gaur (Bos gaurus) and mouse deer (Moschiola indica).

Similipal Tiger Reserve is also having a rich history of conservation. It is also famous for Padmashree Late Saroj Raj Chowdhury, its founder Director and the tigress “Khairi”, his foster daughter. Similipal has come under the Global Network of Biospheres from 2009.
