APEX Pro Tour Bass Fishing Championship – Folsom Lake

The APEX Pro Tour Championship, Presented by Bridgford Foods and Visit Folsom , is slated for a Folsom Lake blast-off February 17-19. Qualifying APEX bass anglers will compete in the three-day bass battle on the Northern California fishery by invite only. The televised event brings camera crews and media for an enhanced APEX opportunity and atmosphere with a limited field that includes only half of the original 2022 APEX anglers – determined by the Angler of the Year (AOY) points race.

Mick Karshner is excited to debut as the APEX Pro Tour emcee at the Championship event.

“There are some big largemouth in Folsom, but the bite could be tough with the guys weighing in a lot of spotted bass on Day One and Two,” said Karshner. “I feel like the winner will have to find a couple of those big largemouth on that final day.”

Two of the competing APEX Pro tour anglers call Folsom Lake their home water.

“It’s up in the air how the lake will fish with the water management strategies that have fluctuated the lake after the large influx of water from the storms,” said Folsom local Luke Johns. “If the level is going up or steady, the fish are okay; if the water is dropping, that will shut ‘em down.

“Even with all those crazy factors involved, there is the potential for a solid early spring bite; but then there is also a chance for a curveball that this is will be one of the toughest APEX tournaments.”

Fellow APEX Pro Tour angler Austin Wilson of Citrus Heights, Calif ., has similar thoughts about a stabilized water level enhancing the fish-catching potential. “With how it is now, I don’t think it will be wide-open, but I definitely think there will be some big bass caught,” said Wilson.

Johns believes the ability to track fish will be the most significant factor and anticipates a mix of reaction and finesse techniques to play a part. “Typically, it is a finesse lake; but there is always the potential for reaction fish to be caught on Folsom,” he explained.

Wilson agreed, saying, “Folsom is all about a person’s style and how they want to fish it.”

Deep and shallow bass factor into both of the angler’s expectations. “There are a lot of trees that are blooming, the days are getting longer and warmer, so there will be some fish pushing to the bank and others out in 40- to 50-feet,” said Wilson.

Johns’ depth mixture was deep fish in 25 to 35 and the big ones in 10 or less.

Wilson would like to see some wind; Johns would not. “My ideal setup would be for the lake to fish as tough as it can because I know the lake, and the tougher it gets, the harder it will be for the guys that don’t know the lake,” Johns shared. “Normally, I would like a little wind, but in this tournament, I want flat calm, and bluebird skies, making it as hard as possible for the others to catch ‘em.”

The two shared the sentiment of Folsom being a “tricky fishery.”

“It’s one of those places where you catch ‘em, and the next day you can fish the same thing in the same conditions, and they disappear – 20-pounds one day and only two fish the next,” explained Wilson.

“Folsom is in its own category like that,” agreed Johns.

Planning for the final day field cut, Johns is looking for 28- to 30-pounds to lead, with 23.5 to make the top-five, “I think keeper count will have to be in the high 20s,” he added.

Wilson thinks it will take more. “Fourteen-pounds and 12 to 15 keepers per day just to make the top-five, but it could be really good and take even more than that,” he concluded.

For the win, Johns predicted 14-pounds and Wilson 17.

To ready himself, Johns is tying up Yamamoto Baits , and Picasso Lures with Sunline on Owner Hooks . Wilson is P-Line contingent ready with a Wicked Willow Underspin and other undisclosed baits rigged with Wicked Weights Tungsten .

With the Championship only days away, Johns expressed his excitement. “We’re finally going to Folsom Lake. It’s a fun place. More tournaments should go there, and I get to fish, then sleep in my own bed.”

Wilson advised all anglers of the floating debris present from the recent rainfall and thanked his community sponsor Folsom Lake Asphalt. “They are making this possible for me,” he said.”

The APEX Pro Tour Championship will weigh in on the APEX stage all three days beginning at 3:00 p.m. Friends, family, and fans are invited to attend. SuperClean , and Duo Realis will provide product giveaways. A Garmin booth will be onsite.

In His own words:

I’ve been doing this a long time. I’ve been up and down the road and across the country. The one thing I’ve learned through all of this is that fishing is fun, and I try to enjoy fishing every time I get on the water. Even if it is tournament fishing, it is still just fishing, and I want to keep that mentality of fun. When I don’t have the finish that I want, I want to keep in mind that I have had the opportunity to go fishing. It may be intense, but I enjoy every minute of it. I owe a debt of gratitude to my wife and my family and friends and sponsors for what they do to give me the opportunity to fish.

I’ve been in the position of the ground floor with an organization as they made a unique move. I was in with the Citgo Bassmaster Tour when they moved to the Bassmaster Elite Series. It is cool to see that development happen and to see it happen on the West is really cool. We’re not just trying to make a tournament circuit, but a circuit that showcases fishing in the West. That way the opportunities that are available in the East can be available here too. Who knows – maybe – we will be able to have our own ladies tournament trail. That is the kind of thing I am looking for. I want to help build a program here that is level with the opportunities for professional tournaments, not just regionally. I am excited to be a part of APEX as it moves the needle towards anglers fishing in the West.

Behind the angler:

At six-years-old, Greg’s mother started taking him trout fishing in the Sacramento river. He later ventured off by himself to fish local ponds and continued fishing with friends in high school. He fished for anything that swam. As an adult, a fellow fireman invited him to a club tournament and that sparked his interest in tournament fishing. His first tournament was on Shasta at the age of 24.

In the boat:

THE WHO Frontman ROGER DALTREY Announces June 2024 'Semi-Acoustic' U.S. Tour

Roger Daltrey — legendary rock icon and co-founder of one of music's most inspirational and influential forces, THE WHO — will be returning to the States on a special solo tour this June, presenting a mostly acoustic set of WHO gems, rarities, solo nuggets and other surprises with an intimate rock-based band and setting as well as answering questions from the audience, kicking off this very exclusive set of shows on June 12 at Virginia's renowned Wolf Trap Filene Center. The nine-city run will continue throughout the month of June (see dates below),wrapping on June 29 at The Pavilion at Ravinia in Highland Park, Illinois.

Special guests for the much-anticipated performances include Grammy -nominated Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall and acclaimed, offbeat singer/songwriter Dan Bern . The unique venues and amphitheaters Daltrey has chosen for his summer run will showcase Daltrey 's acoustic interpretations of his extraordinary canon of WHO songs and solo work, supported by a hand-picked ensemble of musicians. Simon Townshend on guitar, Billy Nicholls on mandolin, Jody Linscott on percussion, Doug Boyle on guitar, John Hogg on bass, Katie Jacoby on violin, Steve Weston on harmonica, Geraint Watkins on keyboards/accordion, Scott Devours on drums.

Daltrey 's return to the States follows THE WHO 's incredibly successful "The Who Hits Back!" tour of 2022, with the band's incomparable frontman drawing praise from all media platforms, including the Dallas Morning News , which said, " Daltrey took flight…roaring and howling and ripping his mic cord through the air like he was lassoing cattle…" The charismatic singer also brought a highly successful solo tour to the States in 2018 via a 10-city run that showcased THE WHO 's legendary rock opera "Tommy" , supported by full orchestral backing. Never content to rest on his laurels, the adventurous artist will continue to peel back the layers on his upcoming June tour, excited about expressing more musical shades of his solo palette, which he has generously shared with audiences in the U.S. and beyond throughout his career.

Also known to be one of rock's more candid, straight-shooters, the working-class Daltrey (originally from London's Shepherd's Bush) will answer questions from the audience during the shows, sharing anecdotes and offering up uniquely tailored renditions of songs seldom performed live either by THE WHO or Daltrey .

In crafting this completely new show set to kick off in June 2024, Daltrey looks forward to unveiling one of his more intimate and unique stage shows, an up close and personal gift to his fans that highlights WHO rarities, solo hits, and other songs from his incredible near 60-year career.

Daltrey , Teenage Cancer Trust 's honorary patron and co-founder of Teen Cancer America (with Pete Townshend ) recently added harmonica to a historic recording. On March 15, DIRE STRAITS ' Mark Knopfler released a new, special recording of his anthemic composition, "Going Home (Theme From Local Hero)" featuring over 60 of the finest rock performers ever assembled on one iconic track, including members of THE BEATLES , THE ROLLING STONES , DIRE STRAITS , THE WHO , PINK FLOYD , QUEEN , BLACK SABBATH , RUSH , GUNS N' ROSES and many more. The milestone release, currently available to order, will raise funds for Teen Cancer America and its U.K. equivalent Teenage Cancer Trust .

Inducted into the Rock And Hall Of Fame with THE WHO in 1990, Daltrey received a Lifetime Achievement award from the Grammy Foundation along with the band in 2001. Daltrey and THE WHO co-founder Pete Townshend received Kennedy Center Honors in 2008. Considered to have one of the most recognizable singing voices of all time, Planet Rock listeners voted Daltrey rock's fifth-greatest voice in music history. He also received stellar reviews for his unique 2018 autobiography, "Thanks A Lot Mr. Kibblewhite" , with one critic describing it as how "the punk became rock's Godfather…" Known for his magnetic presence and rebellious creative spirit, Daltrey has also been an actor and film producer, with multiple roles in films, theatre, and television.

He's released ten solo studio albums, including the acclaimed discs "Daltrey" , "Ride A Rock Horse" , "One Of The Boys" and the 2018 release "As Long As I Have You" , and such hit singles as "I'm Free" , "Giving It All Away" , "Without Your Love" , "Free Me" and "After The Fire" . Justin Timberlake reunites with NSYNC for first performance in 11 years: 'Let's do it again'

NSYNC said hello, hello, hello to their fans who have long awaited a reunion.

Justin Timberlake held a free show in Los Angeles on Wednesday night at the Art Deco theater where he surprised the crowd with a special performance of his upcoming song "Paradise," which features his NSYNC bandmates.

Videos on social media show Timberlake, 43, standing as the curtain behind him slowly revealed Lance Bass ,  Joey Fatone ,  Chris Kirkpatrick  and  JC Chasez . The crowd instantly went wild, screaming louder than the group as they began singing.

The group performed "Paradise" and "Bye Bye Bye" together, bridging their new music with their classic hit. The night marked their first performance with all five band members since their reunion at the 2013 VMAs.

Timberlake, who is gearing up for the release of his sixth solo album  "Everything I Thought It Was,"  shared a photo of the stage with five empty stools on Instagram after the show.

"That was fun. Let’s do it again soon," Bass, 44, teased in the comments section.

Timberlake, who got his musical start in the '90s boy band NSYNC, opened up about the possibility of releasing new music with the group during an interview on  "The Kelly Clarkson Show " in January.

"We've been in the studio, so there may be a little something in the future, too," Timberlake told host  Kelly Clarkson .

It was later revealed that his upcoming album includes a song featuring NSYNC. Timberlake posted a snippet of "Paradise" on Instagram Wednesday.

Bass told USA TODAY earlier this month, that the song "Paradise" made his mom emotional.

"We recorded that a long time ago when we recorded 'Better Place,' so we've been sitting on this for a while," Bass said. "Hard not to talk about it. But I'm glad that it's about to come out because it is such a special song. One of my favorites I've ever recorded. My mom cried immediately when she heard it. So it's Mom-approved."

Timberlake previously reunited with NSYNC in September on the single  "Better Place,"  which was featured on the soundtrack to Timberlake’s animated comedy  "Trolls Band Together."  The song marked the group’s first release since their album "Celebrity" in 2001.

NSYNC teased a reunion after their 2023 MTV Video Music Awards appearance

NSYNC teased its reunion with an appearance at the  2023 MTV Video Music Awards  in September. The group presented the best pop award during the ceremony, which was won by  Taylor Swift .

"That was fun," said Timberlake of reuniting. "It’s kind of crazy, like, there’s so much that just picks up right where it left off as far as the chemistry."

Timberlake's bandmate Fatone  reflected on the success of their comeback  with "Better Place" in an October interview with  OK magazine .

"People are obviously yelling and screaming for a tour, but there's a lot of things that come into play before that could happen," Fatone said. "There's five guys — some of us are married, some have kids, some may not want to do it. We have to have that conversation and talk about what we do now that the song is out there."

NSYNC  formed in 1995  and released its self-titled debut album in March 1998. The boy band went on to earn  nine Top 10 hits  on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart, a  trio of multiplatinum albums  and  eight Grammy nominations .

Justin Timberlake tour begins in April

The "Mirrors" singer, actor and former member of of the boyband NSYNC announced  The Forget Tomorrow World Tour in January , his first tour in five years. The North American leg of the tour is set to kick off a month after his free show on April 29 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, Canada, and includes stops in cities in the U.S., Canada, Europe and the U.K.

In February, he announced that the  second leg  of the tour will restart this fall and include eight new shows in the U.S. and Canada.

It's unclear if his NSYNC bandmates plan to join him for any of the shows on Timberlake's upcoming tour.
