Scottie Scheffler is on the verge of breaking this impressive PGA Tour scoring record

2084803966

Chris Condon

If you’re filling out a March Madness bracket right now, you might want to get Scottie Scheffler’s advice. The same can be said if you’re buying a lottery ticket, placing a bet or in the mood for some bar trivia. Scheffler is on the heater of all heaters right now, winning back-to-back events and defending his Players Championship victory.

The money ( $8.5 million over the last two weeks ), the accolades and the Tiger Woods comparisons are nice and all, but Scheffler’s also one round away from breaking an undersung golf record, one that truly signifies how terrifying he is every time he tees it up. The man has shot under par in all 27 of his rounds on tour so far this season.

As Justin Ray notes, “It's the longest streak ever to begin a PGA Tour season, and ties the longest streak of rounds under par in PGA Tour history." Akshay Bhatia set the record of 27 straight with a first-round 69 at the 2023 World Wide Technology Championship and ended it with a first-round 75 at the 2024 WM Phoenix Open. Woods’ longest streak— 17 .

Scheffler’s had only one double bogey in 2024 (pointed out in the comments), which doesn’t hurt, and he limited himself to just four bogeys over 72 holes at TPC Sawgrass.

This also doesn’t even include December's Hero World Challenge as it’s an unofficial PGA Tour event. Scheffler shot four under-par round of 69, 66, 65 and 68, finishing 20 under at the Tiger-hosted tournament and beat runner-up Sepp Straka by three shots. In Scheffler's last official round of 2023, the scored 70 in the Tour Championship, and that was even par at East Lake. His last over-par round came the previous day, when Scheffler shot 73.

This historic run comes in the midst of putting struggles for Scheffler, which honestly should be illegal. No golfer should be able to have problems on the greens and still shoot under par day in and day out. Now that he’s taken Rory McIlroy’s advice and figured out a few things, other pros might be in for a rude(r) awakening.

This streak doesn’t look like it’ll be stopping anytime soon. Hey Scottie, save some under-par rounds for the rest of us.

Scores on the PGA Tour have been getting lower and lower through the years, but what is the lowest four-round score in golf history?

What Is the Lowest 72-Hole Score in PGA Tour History and Who Recorded It?

With the rapid increase in golf technology over the past two decades, scores on the PGA Tour have been lower than ever before. You can’t just go a few under par and win tournaments any more. Nowadays, players are getting into the high teens and even 20s with their 72-hole scores.

It seems as if professional golfers are shooting in the low 60s almost daily. There has also been a surplus of 59s recorded in recent years, but how low can the best go in a 72-hole tournament on the PGA Tour ?

Justin Thomas holds the record for fewest strokes in a single tournament

Justin Thomas is widely considered one of the best golfers on earth at the moment. The 27-year-old superstar has held the title of world No. 1 multiple times over the past few years, and he’ll have multiple major championships when it’s all said and done.

When Thomas catches fire on the course, there’s almost no one in the world who can keep up with him. That’s exactly what happened in the 2017 Sony Open at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Thomas started the tournament with a 59 on Thursday. He didn’t slow down the rest of the weekend either, as he posted 64, 65, and 65 to finish the tournament at 27-under par.

Waialae Country Club is a par 70 golf course, so Thomas finished the weekend with a total score of 253. That stands today as the lowest 72-hole total in PGA Tour history, but it isn’t the lowest in relation to par.

Ernie Els shot the lowest score to par in a 72-hole tournament

Who says you need to hit the ball a mile to go low on the PGA Tour? Easy-swinging Ernie Els put that myth to rest when he shot a 31-under par 261 in the 2003 Mercedes Championship.

Els won the tournament by eight shots in a blowout.

”It makes me feel very, very comfortable at the moment,” Els said after the win. ”I can go out there and really think about trying to play well. I really look forward to the year now. This is really a perfect start, something I needed.”

Apparently, Hawaii is the friendliest U.S. state to low scores. Els’ 31-under achievement came at the Kapalua Plantation Course in Lahaina, HI.

Steve Stricker shot 33-under par in a 72-hole stretch for the lowest score in PGA Tour history

Ernie Els might have the lowest 72-hole score for a single tournament in PGA Tour history, but fellow veteran Steve Stricker bested him in a five-round event.

At the 2009 Bob Hope Classic, Stricker shot 33-under par in the first four rounds of the tourney. The amazing part? Stricker didn’t even go on to win the event. Pat Perez outplayed Stricker in the fifth round and ended up winning the tournament after going 30-under par in his own 72-hole stretch.

Stricker may hold the 72-hole record, but he would’ve rather had the win that day.

2023 Players Championship leaderboard: Scottie Scheffler strolls to dominant win at TPC Sawgrass

Scheffler stands the third golfer ever to reign as players and masters champion simultaneously.

The Players Championship has a way about it where it can turn wild and wonderful down the stretch of the tournament. Monster comebacks, dramatic, clutch shots and bonehead decisions have all been on the table. The unexpected is expected. There was none of that in the 2023 edition of this tournament, however, as Scottie Scheffler imposed his will across the final round at TPC Sawgrass en route to winning the PGA Tour's flagship event at 17 under.

In doing so, Scheffler won the $4.5 million winner's share and became just the third golfer ever to serve as the reigning champion at The Players and the Masters simultaneously, joining Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

"It's a lot of fun," said Scheffler. "Long day, tough day. I knew the conditions were going to get really hard late and I did a really good job of staying patient, not trying to force things, and then I got hot kind of in the middle of the round and, yeah, tried to put things away as quickly as I could."

Were there moments on Sunday when others felt like they had a chance to win? Sure. Did they actually have a chance? Eh, probably not. Once Scheffler grabbed a two-stroke lead late on Saturday, the reigning PGA Tour Player of the Year had all but wrapped up his sixth victory over his last 27 tournaments.

There were times when Scheffler's playing competitor, Min Woo Lee, charged at him -- namely with a birdie at the opening hole, but never once did it the trophy appear out of the Texan's grasp. While Lee rocked a turquoise mock turtleneck, gaudy sunglasses and a bodacious mullet, Scheffler remained his normal even-keeled, montone self.

Scheffler's overnight lead had vanished by the time the final pair walked off the third green when he made his only real mistake of the day. Four boring pars in a row put Scheffler back on track and through conventional run-of-the-mill play his lead had grown to three.

Player after player would try their hand at Pete Dye in the waning moments of the championship -- Hideki Matsuyama looked prime to post a number, Max Homa had his chances, Tyrrell Hatton tied the lowest score ever on the back nine -- and while they were able to overcome the course architect, they never sniffed the course conqueror.

Any doubt was put to rest when Scheffler chipped in for his first birdie of the day on the difficult par-3 8th. Another birdie on the ninth all but secured a finish inside the top five -- the result needed to reclaim the world No. 1 ranking. A birdie on 10 was just rude, and two more on 11 and 12 put those who have claimed Jon Rahm to be the best player in the world on high alert.

Four straight pars preceded five straight birdies, which were followed by six holes of simply soaking it in. While it may not have made for the greatest theater down the stretch like some Players Championships of the past, for Scheffler, the more mundane, the better.

Whether in life or on the course, the newly minted world No. 1 has often leaned into being boring despite what prognosticators and writers would like to see or hear from the top man in the sport. He doesn't care about the Official World Golf Rankings like many before him, citing "it's just an algorithm," but it nonetheless matters. His weeks off consist of hanging around his house and working on his backyard just like you or I might.

Yet despite his level-headed nature and average joe personality, Scheffler's game is anything but average. His feet perform some variation of the salsa on every swing of the driver, making one wonder, "How in the world does he square the club face at impact?"

His hands are the softest when moments are tensest and his knuckles should be the whitest. He doesn't fill up the cup on the greens, but he does just enough -- Scheffler was the only player without a three-putt this week -- and when he does pour them in, you can just about hand him the trophy.

Scheffler's game does his talking -- just as it always has -- and this week at the biggest stop on the PGA Tour's calendar it made a statement: The man who ran through 2022 is on the cusp of doing exactly the same a year later.

If you find that boring , well, you're just going to have to deal with it. Grade: A+

2. Tyrrell Hatton (-12): The Englishman began his day nine strokes behind Scheffler and at one point hit seven straight pars. Playing his front nine in even par, Hatton rode the heater of the year thus far when he signed for a 29 -- tying the back-nine record at TPC Sawgrass -- and posted the clubhouse lead at 12 under. This effort proved to be good for a runner-up finish and his second consecutive quality outing. Grade: A-

T3. Viktor Hovland (-10): Short game, short game, short game. The chipping continues to hinder Hovland, and this week was no different. His irons were splendid across four days, and if not for a disappointing third round, he could have been closer to Scheffler to start Sunday. He never really had a chance to win this championship, but this performance marks his second straight top-10 finish at TPC Sawgrass. Grade: B+

T6. Max Homa (-8): The finish was less than desirable, but Homa continues to rise in these big fields. There is a legitimate case to be made that he is a top five player in the world as he slowly makes the transition from his native poa annua putting surfaces to the grainy Bermuda of the East Coast. His ball striking remained sound at TPC Sawgrass, but it was the second straight tournament where he disappointed on the greens. Grade : B+

T13. Collin Morikawa (-7): Morikawa became the tournament favorite following his 7-under 65 on Thursday. That was as good as it would get for him as he played his final 54 holes in even par including a disappointing day of even par on Saturday when conditions were at their easiest. The putting improvements that were evident at the Tournament of Champions are currently nowhere to be found. He ranked third in strokes gained tee to green and second in strokes gained approach only to rank 66th in strokes gained putting. Grade: C

T60. Justin Thomas (E): He just never really got things going this week. After making the cut on the number, the 2021 winner signed for rounds of 71-71 over the weekend to finish nearly three touchdowns off the pace. The signs of his game are there. He had great iron performances in the middle portion of this tournament and impressed from around the green on Sunday. However, he hasn't been able to piece them all together for a whole tournament let alone a round. To make matters worse, the putter is just flat out bad at the moment as he lost roughly five strokes to the field on the greens. Grade : D-

MC. Rory McIlroy: The 2019 champion was never able to recover from an opening 76. Paired with Scheffler and Jon Rahm, who was forced to withdraw Friday morning, the world No. 3 was the bottom man on the totem pole. His short game was poor for his standards but perhaps more concerning was his driving. Voicing concern about the new model of driver he is playing, McIlroy will have to figure out that club moving forward. Morikawa, another TaylorMade staffer, ditched the most recent edition of the driver and it will be interesting if McIlroy follows suit. Grade: F

Scheffler faces the island green

He leads by five and is now on the 17th tee. The two players ahead of him just hit it in the drink, so the visuals have not been great for Scheffler. Still, he has plenty of wiggle room to work with.

Scheffler drops a shot

All things considered it was a solid bogey for Scheffler on No. 14. He's got one hole left before he faces the water-riddled stretch of 16-18. His lead remains five over Tyrrell Hatton who has been in the clubhouse for quite some time.

Scheffler now chasing history

He leads by six at 18 under after another birdie on 12. He now sets his sights on the scoring record which is held by Greg Norman.

Min Woo makes a boo boo

That was a tough scene. Blasting his tee shot in the pine straws on the 11th, he knocked the ball around a couple times before finally getting out of trouble. In all, it was a double bogey 7 and drops him to 8 under. Lee, No. 50 in the world, needs as many ranking points as possible so this could be extremely costly. Meanwhile, Scheffler made another birdie to get to 17 under. In other news, the sky is blue.

Scottie makes his third consecutive birdie, and all that's left is the handing out of the gold boy to the reigning Masters champion. He could feasibly get to 20 under.

He can be excused.

Did anyone across the landscape of professional golf have a better season than Stricker during 2023?

He entered 16 events on the PGA TOUR Champions. He won six times and finished runner-up on five occasions. Only once did he finish out the top 10.

As a result of his success, Stricker captured the season-long race for the Charles Schwab Cup and was named the Jack Nicklaus Award as the PGA TOUR Champion’s Player of the Year.

Stricker also earned the Byron Nelson Award (season scoring average at 67.54) and Arnold Palmer Award (season money leader at $3,986,063) setting single-season PGA TOUR Champions records in both categories.

“It was a very special year,” Stricker said. “Just a lot of things went right. I had six wins and had a lot of other opportunities to win. Overall, each and every week I felt like I had chances to win. So, it was one of those special years and I continued it all year long. Had a lot of confidence each and every time I teed it up and I just kept rolling with it. It was a lot of fun.”

One of his six victories came in the Kaulig Companies Championship – one of five majors on the PGA TOUR Champions schedule, held annually at the historic Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio. It marked Stricker’s second win at the Kaulig Companies Championship after a victory in 2021.

Steve Stricker’s Round 4 highlights from Kaulig Companies Championship

In addition to the prestige of winning a PGA TOUR Champions major, each year the winner of the Kaulig Companies Championship is extended an invitation to compete in the following season’s PLAYERS Championship. Which is how Stricker – the oldest player teeing it up this week – found himself as part of the strongest field in golf.

“Firestone is one of those places you’re excited to go to every year,” he said. “When you do win you get to come and play in THE PLAYERS Championship, which is something very cool for us at this age.”

Despite a relatively slow start to 2024 Stricker is looking forward to going against the “youngsters.”

“I am excited to be here,” Stricker said during a conference call on Tuesday. “I’m excited to challenge myself at this level. We’re playing against the best players in the world. Hopefully, I can get my game going. I think I haven’t had it so far this year but I’m hoping this atmosphere, and this tournament brings my game to another level. I’m super excited and pumped to be here.”

Stricker, who turned 57 last month, has played in three PGA TOUR Champions events this season with moderate success.

With rounds of 66-64-66 he finished third in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship – where he was the defending champ – five shots behind Steve Alker.

He shared seventh place in the rain-plagued Chubb Classic last month but a final-round 75 after opening rounds of 68-66 dropped him out of contention and into a tie for 32d in last week’s Cologuard Classic.

His finish at Cologuard was a rarity. It marked his highest 18-hole score in a non-major on PGA TOUR Champions, and highest overall since the 2020 Kaulig Companies Championship (75, final round). In 66 career starts on PGA TOUR Champions, last week was only is only the third time Stricker hasn’t finished in the top 25.

Stricker knows it will be a challenge to win without an A-game.

“I think my iron play has been really mediocre, if not sometimes pretty bad,” he said. “It’s just been very inconsistent. I played really well on Saturday last week (66) and then on Sunday I didn’t do anything very well. Here, I’m going to have to drive the ball well. The rough is up. And, I’ll have to hit some better irons than I’ve been hitting. But the swing actually feels pretty good. I had some good feels last week. I think I’m on the right track with things and I’ve just got to take that to the tournament.”

Stricker chuckled when he was asked if he had ever been the oldest player in a field before.

“You know, good question,” he said. “I don’t know. Probably. I think I played a John Deere Classic once before after I had turned 50 or was right around 50. So, I was probably the oldest guy there.”

THE PLAYERS Championship hasn’t been Stricker’s favorite stop, even though he has made the cut 13 times in 22 appearances. His last appearance came in 2021 when he missed the cut. His best finish was a tie for sixth in 1999 when he went 73-73-70-74 to finish five shots behind David Duval.

A victory – or even a strong showing – would be a great start to 2023 revisited.
