Ms. Lauryn Hill Is Hitting the Road With Fugees — Here’s How to Score Last-Minute Tickets

By John Lonsdale

John Lonsdale

Ms. Lauryn Hill released one of the best albums of all time nearly 25 years ago this year with The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , and now the Grammy winner has taken her 1998 solo project’s songs on the road — along with a Fugees reunion — for a multi-city trek that kicked off in September. Following the tour announcement, Hill announced another run of new dates that would extend through December, with stops in Vancouver, Detroit, Atlanta, and Boston.

“ The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” Hill shared in a statement. “I wrote love songs and protest songs — (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees 2023 Tour Schedule

Taking the number 10 spot on our list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time , Rolling Stone wrote of Hill’s solo classic: “ Miseducation ’s musical legacy is just as deep; at a time when pop was becoming increasingly slick and digitized in the go-go Nineties, here was an album that showed the commercial appeal of a rawer sound; ‘I wanna hear that thickness of sound,’ Hill said. ‘You can’t get that from a computer, because a computer’s too perfect. But that human element, that’s what makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I love that.'”

In Praise of the Ever-Evolving Lauryn Hill

Celebrating the 25th anniversary of “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” as well as her legacy with the Fugees, the singer and rapper reveled in the power of reinvention.

A woman in a bright red ruffled cape, bedazzled sunglasses and a jeweled bonnet sings into a microphone onstage, bathed in yellow light.

By Salamishah Tillet

Reporting from Newark

“She is having so much fun onstage” was the surprised thought that ran through my mind as Lauryn Hill kicked off her Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees: “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 25th Anniversary Tour at the Prudential Center in downtown Newark on Tuesday night.

Having grown up in nearby South Orange, N.J., her joy was partly because she was at home, and partly because we were all there to celebrate that a quarter of a century ago, she made history with her 10-times-platinum multigenre album “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Its 10 Grammy nominations yielded five wins, which was a record for a female artist, and “Miseducation” became the first hip-hop LP to take home album of the year.

Perhaps Hill was also amped by the high stakes of the performance. Earlier this year, her Fugees group mate Pras was found guilty for an illegal foreign influence scheme, leading some to predict that this full reconciliation of Pras, Hill and Wyclef Jean would be their final tour as a trio.

Or maybe, I was projecting glee back onto her since this was the first of her concerts at which I’ve felt fully at ease since attending her initial solo tour back in 1999. Every time since — including when I bought tickets to her performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland in 2009, only for her entire European tour abruptly canceled — I’ve been disappointed by her inconsistency.

Most of those shows came after Hill settled a suit with four musicians, known collectively as New Ark, who said she hadn’t properly credited them for their contributions to the sound and success of “Miseducation.” With the exception of the taping and release of “MTV Unplugged” in 2001, she had gone into a self-exile. “I had to step away when I realized that for the sake of the machine,” she later told Essence magazine, “I was being way too compromised.”

When she returned to the stage a few years later, she had so radically rearranged the songs from the beloved “Miseducation,” they were often unrecognizable.

The revisions stung fans hard because the music had spoken so directly to so many — including me. “Miseducation” was released on my 23rd birthday on Aug. 25, 1998, and because of that simple calendar fact, I thought the album was all mine. Back then, I was in transition — between a relationship with my college boyfriend and the young man who would become my life partner. I was obsessed with her B-side cuts “When It Hurts So Bad” and “I Used to Love Him” with Mary J. Blige, since these breakup songs captured my range of emotions: “What you need ironically/Will turn out what you want to be” became my mantra as I moved from heartache to hopefulness.

The album was so tied up with a younger version of myself that I understood it only through nostalgia, failing to appreciate who Hill was becoming in the present. A more mature way of experiencing her live was to let go of my expectations and recognize that she was innovating, recreating and disproving past accusations of unoriginality. “There’s no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I’ve been performing them without some variation and exploration,” she wrote in 2018 . “I’m not a robot. If I’d had additional music out, perhaps I would have kept them as they were.”

In Newark this week, as Hill appeared onstage in a bright red ruffled corseted gilet, bedazzled sunglasses and a jeweled kufi, she entranced the crowd, reminding us that she was one of our generation’s definitive preachers and now prodigal daughters. She opened each song in its familiar arrangement, and then quickly switched up its tempo, genre or melody.

The soulful “Final Hour” was remixed with the beat of “Money, Power & Respect,” the Lox’s collaboration with DMX and Lil’ Kim; the marching band from Hill’s alma mater Columbia High School joined her live band onstage for “Doo Wop (That Thing)”; Latin jazz beats were interspersed throughout the tender “To Zion,” a song for her oldest son that was not merely a tribute, but a complete triumph.

The music was set to a backdrop of images that featured quotes from Frantz Fanon and Marcus Garvey, Hill’s personal home videos, and a montage of Black artists and activists including Josephine Baker and Angela Davis. My favorites showed Hill over time, which seemed in direct conversation with the beautiful black-and-white photographs of the musician looking into a mirror from the liner notes of “Miseducation” itself.

For those unaccustomed to Hill’s latest style, her musical digressions often sound dissonant. In a way, they are right. The remixes can be disinviting, and many fans near me in the crowd found it hard to keep up with her changes. Whereas Taylor Swift’s note-for-note versions of her old albums are celebrated, I am increasingly intrigued by Hill’s appetite for revolutionizing her older material.

Hearing these songs rearranged not only forced me to pay closer attention to her powerfully packed lyrics and melodic rhyme flow, but also reactivated my sense of curiosity, anticipation and admiration for her.

In a genre like hip-hop, where remixing, sampling and turning older music into the new is a core artistic principle and central practice, Hill’s experimentation is not that surprising. But as a female rapper, she has often been held to a double standard and has had to play by different rules. Onstage, she isn’t merely entertaining us; she’s showing us what it means to have to reclaim this album as fully hers, while pushing her artistry into the future.

It is a big ask from an artist with only one full album. And it’s a meaningful challenge to the very notion of the “great” album, which has a timelessness that is as dependent on its spirit of innovation and production value as well as our personal connections to it — how much we loved it, and the vision of ourselves that it projected back onto us when we heard it for the first time. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop , is it possible to both champion Hill’s groundbreaking contributions to the genre while also allowing the album itself to grow up as much as we have?

An answer of sorts came during another part of the show. When Pras and Wyclef finally joined Hill for the second set, their reunion relied on our familiarity with the Fugees’ catalog — “Vocab,” “Zealots,” “The Mask” — and at one point, there were more than eight people onstage with mics, including guests such as John Forte, Outsidaz and Rah Digga, for a roaring rendition of “Cowboys.” It was a joy to see the three intact and their playful competitiveness and musical chemistry restored. While being flanked by so many of her male peers, Hill still commanded the space as she always did, proving her mettle as one of our greatest M.C.s.

But as the Fugees set wore on, I began to long for the “Miseducation” one. Suddenly, I wanted to linger in the unpredictability of Hill’s arrangements, her constant improvising, her seamless movement between singing and rapping.

By finally accepting Hill’s ability to change, I realized that I had misread so much before. Here was an artist — once again, and on tour — rewriting the rules of hip-hop, and American popular music at large. She was not just teaching us how to hear “Miseducation” differently, but showing us what it looks like for a musician to truly evolve and redefine what we call a classic as something brand-new.

An earlier version of this article misstated one of the guests onstage with the Fugees at the Prudential Center. Rah Digga joined the group, not Remy Ma.

Lauryn Hill set list

Wondering what Hill will play live?

While we can’t guarantee anything — although it’s likely she’ll perform at least a few tracks from “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” — here’s an educated guess based on what she played at a recent show:

01.) “Everything Is Everything” 02.) “Superstar” 03.) “When It Hurts So Bad” 04.) “Final Hour” 05.) “Lost Ones” 06.) “Every Ghetto, Every City” 07.) “Ex-Factor” 08.) “To Zion” 09.) “Nothing Even Matters” 10.) “Forgive Them Father” 11.) “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” (Frankie Valli cover) 12.) “I Used to Love Him” 13.) “Tell Him” 14.) “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” 15.) “Doo Wop (That Thing)”

The above set list comes courtesy of Set List FM .

At all U.S. concerts, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel will co-headline with Hill.

According to Variety , it’s likely they won’t be touring internationally “presumably because of member Pras Michel’s legal challenges stemming from his recent conviction on international conspiracy charges.”

In September 2021, the South Orange, NJ natives announced a 25th anniversary tour celebrating their album “The Score” but canceled a few months later due to COVID concerns.

Hip-Hop stars on tour in 2023

Lauryn Hill announces 25th anniversary tour for solo album

The singer will celebrate The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill with a global 17-date tour that will also include Fugees members in the US and Canada

Lauryn Hill is set to embark on a global tour to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her acclaimed solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill .

The singer and rapper will perform the entirety of her Grammy-winning album across 17 dates in the US and Canada as well as in Australia and New Zealand. She will also be reunited by fellow Fugees members for her dates in the US and Canada.

Hill’s US dates include Chicago’s United Center, Brooklyn’s Barclays Center and the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. Her first date is on 8 September in Minneapolis.

“The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” Hill said in a statement. “I wrote love songs and protest songs – (still love songs) about the subjects and interests that inspired and moved me. I was confident that what inspired me would resonate with an audience that had been led to believe that songs of that kind could only live in the past.”

The tour comes after the Fugees were forced to cancel their reunion tour as a result of Covid. Originally announced in 2021 to celebrate the anniversary of Grammy-winning album The Score, it was later cancelled in 2022.

In September 2021, the trio reunited on stage in New York for their first gig in 15 years after keeping fans waiting for three and a half hours.

Hill has made a number of appearances this year already to celebrate the anniversary including at the hip-hop 50th anniversary celebrations in New York City appearing alongside Nas as well as headlining the Roots Picnic festival alongside fellow Fugees.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, featuring hits such as Doo Wop (That Thing), Ex-Factor and Everything Is Everything, debuted at No 1 in the US in 1998, selling 422,000 copies in its first week, a record for a female solo artist.

Concert Review: Lauryn Hill's 25th 'Miseducation' Celebration Passes With a Grade Curve

Concert Review: Lauryn Hill's 25th 'Miseducation' Celebration Passes With a Grade Curve

NEW YORK (AP) — “Twenty-five years of support. 25 years of love… it’s our first show, it’s a little challenging because we’re home, and I’ve been emotional.”

Those were the words Lauryn Hill spoke to an adoring crowd as she kicked off the “Ms. Lauryn Hill & Fugees: Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour.” Throughout the night, the artist who now styles herself as Ms. Lauryn Hill, re-lived songs from her iconic album in Newark, New Jersey ’s Prudential Center, located about 20 minutes away from her hometown of East Orange.

Standing regally with flowy black pants, jeweled sunglasses and a white shirt with oversized balloon sleeves covered by an enormous, reddish floral-like cape, Hill triumphantly proclaimed, “New Jersey, I’m home!”

As a packed house stood on their feet, the eclectic singer, flanked by a sizeable band which included a string section, began with a powerful rendition of “Everything is Everything.” Accompanying Hill were marching band students from her alma mater, Columbia High School. (Other students from the area would perform “Doo Wop (That Thing)” at the end of her set.)

But significant audio issues muffled Hill's angelic, yet powerful voice throughout the night. At times, “The Sweetest Thing” artist cut through the sound challenges, delivering beautiful renditions of some of her most popular songs.

Yelling out “Zion!” — the ode to her first born and a beloved fan favorite — Hill was greeted with enormous cheers. The deeply personal song details how she continued with her pregnancy despite industry concerns that a child would derail her promising career. As fans stood captivated while Hill emotionally belted out lyrics, pictures and home videos of a then-baby Zion played on giant screens behind her. She would follow with wonderful performances of “Nothing Even Matters,” “Too Good to Be True,” and a stirring presentation of the title track.

The sheer brilliance and the magnitude of “Miseducation” is often hard to encapsulate. Considered as one of the greatest American albums of the 20th century, it earned five Grammys, including “Album of the Year,” becoming the first hip-hop album to win that honor.

More importantly, its subjects about romance, Black love and self-worth won hearts worldwide, and that’s partly why fans are so sensitive about Ms. Hill. Sharply rapping and singing majestically — not comparative to the current melodic rap style — Hill captured both traditional R&B lovers and hardcore hip-hop fans. Disappointingly, "Miseducation'' would be her only solo studio album.

And if you’ve been wondering — yes, she was extremely tardy. While doors opened at 8 p.m., she didn’t hit the stage until about 9:50 p.m. (On Nas’s 2022 Grammy-winning best rap album, “King’s Disease II,” Hill provided a rare but stellar verse on “Nobody,” rhyming, “My awareness like Keanu in The Matrix/I’m saving souls and y’all complaining ’bout my lateness.”)

But there were other disappointments, although not entirely surprising for those who’ve followed her. Up-tempo versions of “When It Hurts So Bad,” “Superstar” and “Final Hour,” which contained hints of The Lox’s “Money Power Respect,” confused an audience unsure of how to follow along.

Rarely providing interviews, Hill addressed confusion in 2018 regarding her song arrangements (along with other rampant gossip) in a Medium op-ed, stating, “There’s no way I could continue to play the same songs over and over as long as I’ve been performing them without some variation and exploration. I’m not a robot. If I’d had additional music out, perhaps I would have kept them as they were.”

But her explanation has done little to appease fans who hold “Miseducation” in such high regard. The disappointment may have been most palpable during “Ex-Factor,” the beautiful, near flawless record about painfully and reluctantly ending a relationship. The sped-up tempo deprived the audience of the song’s emotion and connection, although fans did their best to accept what she provided.

After Hill’s solo set ended, she invited her Fugees bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Pras, on stage at around 11:10 p.m. They performed songs from their Grammy-winning catalog, as Hill revealed the group was unable to tour last year in celebration of the 25th anniversary of “The Score" like they hoped.

“A lot of people didn’t think this would happen, including some of the people on stage,” said Hill of the group’s reuniting. Pras responded to her with a resounding “Facts!” signaling he was probably one of those she was referring to.

Earlier this year, Pras Michel was found guilty of political conspiracy and is currently free ahead of sentencing.

The crowd, who would close the night at Hill’s urging by singing “Happy Birthday” to Wyclef who turned 54, rose to their feet when the group ended with their biggest hits: “Killing Me Softly,” “Ready or Not” and “Fu-Gee-La.”

In sports, home-field advantage can be a deciding factor; it’s why teams fight so hard to secure it as they head into the playoffs. A home crowd can shift the momentum of a game and provide a team with an extra boost when needed. Hill’s show was far from perfect, but she was surrounded by people who loved her, were touched by her music and those who literally grew up with her — both literally and metaphorically.

“The Miseducation” performance failed at some points, and simple fixes could’ve made it stellar. But her fans gave her a passing grade, even if they were biased, grading on a curve. And there’s nothing wrong with that — it’s what home-field advantage is for. The tour will resume Thursday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. ___

Between this spring’s Roots Picnic in Philadelphia and September’s Global Citizen event in Manhattan, Lauryn Hill has been in a celebratory mood. Along with playing the finest moments of her genre-jumbling, 20-million-selling “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” (still her only solo studio album), the singer has thrilled audiences with a rare joviality, powerful displays of her throaty vocals and surprise mini-reunions of the Fugees , her legendary R&B/hip-hop trio with Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel.

Dressed in a pillowy red waistcoat, puffy pirate sleeves and bejeweled headdress, Hill and her large ensemble commenced her solo set with a hearty “I’m home,” followed by a head-charging version of “Everything Is Everything.” Accompanied by a sharply edgy rhythm section, Hill’s huskier-than-usual vocals were on powerful display. Later in the set, that same husky tone turned her version of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” into something radically more urgent and angular than the original. As a matter of fact, so many of Hill’s “Miseducation” tracks were deconstructed and born vividly anew, it was if its silver anniversary was meant for the gift of experimentation.

Should Hill ever decide to make another solo album, this nice-and-rough singing style, a la Tina Turner, would make a rich calling card. With a drummer working overtime and an aggressive percussionist’s rolling congas, Hill punctuated the pain of “When It Hurts So Bad” with a cocksure swagger in each syllable, and pushed her vocals to their raw, barking extreme over the quick, flitting string arrangement of “Final Hours.” When the string sound swelled to a radiant shimmer on “Ex-Factor,” Hill’s voice grew soft and tender. When the rugged, cluttered rhythms went off the rails, her legendary speed rapping came through, loud and clear, on “Lost Ones.”  Lest she forget about her devotion to sweet reggae grooves and lilting melody, she turned the word “beautiful” — during her supple rendition of “To Zion” — into a rubbery, repetitive prayer. Later, she pulled the phrase “love line” out of the Motown-meets-Thom-Bell-like “Tell Him” and got lost and longing in the hypnotic mantra’s reverie.

No sooner had Hill wrapped up her “Miseducation” tribute with a sensationally unsteady “Doo Wop (That Thing)” than the singer grew pensive, as she began sing-speaking, “We spread that truth to the masses and socio-economic classes… a Black girl and two Haitians. We were so far ahead of the game they’re still trying to chase us.” With that, fellow Fugees Pras and Wyclef Jean hit the stage with Hill for an equal partnership of flavorful funky-but-chic hip-hop with each member zig-zagging through each other’s phrases — a rap Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, if you will. Unlike previous outings where the Fugees’ legend was synopsized down to their three biggest hits, their set on this night was full blown and totemic.

Though it’s tempting to say that the Fugees’ seamless blend of voices and shadings sounded as if they’d never been apart — especially on the hiccupping “How Many Mics” and a particularly rowdy “Cowboys” — in actuality, their 12-song set was more of a loud, proud, sibling reunion where long-lost brothers and sisters can’t stop talking passionately. That was particularly true when they pulled a ferocious version of “Family Business” out of thin air. Having old friends such as singer John Forté and the Outsidaz around just made this family reunion all the more sweet.

Ms. Lauryn Hill Announces The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour

Fugees will co-headline the US and Canadian dates

Ms. Lauryn Hill Announces The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour

Ms. Lauryn Hill will celebrate the 25th anniversary of her seminal album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by embarking on a world tour this fall . What’s more, Hill’s band Fugees will co-headline all of the North American shows.

The North American leg kicks with Fugees kicks off on October 17th in Newark, New Jersey, and also includes stops in Brooklyn, Washington, DC, Philadelphia, Toronto, Chicago, Fort Worth, Denver, Los Angeles, Oakland, and Seattle.

Update: Due to “overwhelming demand,” Hill has announced a new run of shows taking place in November, including dates in Vancouver, San Francisco, Atlanta, Nashville, Miami, Boston, and more.

Tickets are available via StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through StubHub’s FanProtect program. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

Earlier this year, Consequence named The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill the second best hip-hop album of all time .

Fugees previously reconvened in 2021 for their first live performance in 15 years . However, plans for a full-fledged reunion tour were delayed and then canceled due to the pandemic. The upcoming jaunt may be the last chance to see Fugees live, as Pras Michel was  found guilty in late April for his involvement in a billion-dollar Malaysian money laundering scheme. The Fugees co-founding member is currently awaiting sentencing but could face up to 20 years in prison.

Lauryn Hill Teases 2023 Tour to Celebrate 25th Anniversary of ‘Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’

Lauryn Hill is gearing up for the 25th anniversary of her iconic album , The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , and might be going on tour to celebrate.

The Grammy award-winning singer took to the stage over the weekend to perform at ONE Musicfest in Atlanta and seemingly teased at a 2023 tour. Photographer Julia Beverly  shared clips from the show on Instagram as well as Lauryn’s confirmation of an upcoming tour.

“Atlanta, we love you so much. 25 years ago, so we gonna be back with those songs the way you can recognize them, ayyy?” Hill told the crowd.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Julia Beverly (@juliabeverly)

In Beverly’s caption, she shed more light on Hill’s tour announcement.

“She announced (last slide) that she will be performing ‘those songs the way you can recognize them’ next year in honor of the 25th anniversary,” Beverly shared before offering a suggestion to whoever will be in charge of the tour’s lighting.

“(As a photographer I just ask that they please put a spotlight on her on stage, lmao [laughing my a** off], backlighting killing me),” she jokingly noted.

Hill released her solo debut back in August 1998 to critical acclaim. Featuring contributions from Mary J. Blige , D’Angelo , and Carlos Santana , the album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart after selling more than 422,000 sales in its first week, Complex reported .

The album helped her sweep the 1999 Grammy awards, where she took home five statues, including Album of the Year, Best R&B Album, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for “Doo Wop (That Thing).”

In February 2021, The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) confirmed Hill’s debut album went diamond and has sold more than 10,000,000 units. The feat put Hill alongside the likes of Michael Jackson ’s Thriller , Adele ’s 21 , Britney Spears ’ … Baby One More Time , Eminem ’s The Marshall Mathers LP , and 2Pac ’s All Eyez On Me  as diamond-certified artists .

Lauryn Hill tour

Other area shows include Oct. 19 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn and Oct 23 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philly.

Released in August 1998, “Miseducation,” a rap/sung hybrid, became a phenomenon on the strength of the singles “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything is Everything.” It won five Grammy Awards in 1999, including Album of the Year.

“‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill’ is and was a love song to my parents, my family, my people, my musical and cultural forebears, my teachers, my loves, my Creator,” said Hill in a statement released Tuesday. “I loved music, I loved people, I truly felt grateful to God for my life, and genuinely blessed to have a platform where I could share wisdom and perspective through music. I felt a charge to challenge the idea that certain kinds of expression and/or certain kinds of people didn’t belong in certain places. I loved showing what could work or happen provided there was imagination, creativity and love leading the way.”

Hill headlined the recent Roots Picnic festival in Philadelphia, and fellow Fugees members Wyclef Jean and Pras joimed her on stage, reuniting as the Fugees for the first time since 2021.

In 2021, the Fugees announced reunion tour, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the group's landmark album “The Score,” that included a date at the Prudential Center, but the tour was canceled due to safety concerns over the “continued Covid pandemic,” according to a group statement.

Member Pras was recently found guilty of 10 criminal counts in federal court in a plot to help China influence U.S. government officials. The counts include conspiracy to defraud the US, witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government. He faces up to 20 years in prison.

Hill also has performances scheduled Sept. 8 in Minneapolis, Sept. 23 at the Global Citizen Festival in New York City, and in Australia and New Zealand.

Lauryn Hill

“Thank you for your grace and patience,” Ms. Lauryn Hill gushed. “I’m ’bout to sing my voice out, but that’s okay because I’m in BK!” Ms. Hill — armed with both an admirable air of gratitude and a motivation to quell the controversy caused by her tardiness at her Oct. 17 Newark opening show — mounted a glorious celebration of her seminal Miseducation album, the Fugees’ legacy, hip-hop’s 50th anniversary, Black innovation, and family, both blood and chosen, at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY, on Thursday night (Oct. 19).

Ms. Lauryn Hill Pulled Off a Surprise Fugees Reunion at Global Citizen Festival

Trending on billboard.

Donning a stunning white pantsuit complete with an oversized bow on the back, Ms. Hill opened the show with “Everything Is Everything” — a subtle nod to the ways in which the show would track the interconnectedness and cyclical nature of Black music and Ms. Hill’s approach to her art.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill , Ms. Hill’s debut solo album, arrived on Aug. 25, 1998. The album debuted atop the  Billboard 200 , making her the first solo female rapper to reach No. 1 on the chart. The record, which was certified Diamond by the RIAA in 2021, spawned three Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles: “Doo Wop (That Thing)” (No. 1, two weeks), “Ex-Factor” (No. 21) and “Everything Is Everything” (No. 35). Miseducation  won Hill five Grammys in one night, making her the first woman to do so; her album is also the first hip-hop record to receive the Grammy for album of the year. Hill’s debut solo studio album — which remains her only studio LP as a solo artist — was added to the Library of Congress in 2015.

More often than not, the new arrangements functioned as an extension of the Miseducation universe. During a lively rendition of “Final Hour,” she interpolated The LOX, DMX and Lil’ Kim’s “Money, Power & Respect” — a move that contextualized Miseducation with other hip-hop classics of its time and ilk. While singing “When It Hurts So Bad,” however, Ms. Hill beckoned the audience to re-contextualize that song with a montage of Tina Turner’s live performances playing on the jumbotron. Ms. Hill’s goal for the night was not to simply rest on the laurels of Miseducation , but to continue to imagine where else she can take the album 25 years after release.

Ms. Hill repeatedly spoke about writing and recording much of the album while she was in her 20s, and with motherhood and family informing so much of her introspection throughout the night’s show, she laid bare why it makes sense for her to never release another studio album. Towards the end of the set, she flashed a self-attributed quote on the screen that read: “This life is a process of learning.” Her (mis)education will never end. And, for what it’s worth, the new arrangements were terrific: a gospel-informed outro to “Superstar” was particularly moving, even while she was visibly voicing her frustration with the sound team because she was apparently unable to hear herself onstage. The new arrangements also allowed Ms. Hill to find new pockets, providing the foundation for some truly virtuosic rapping to complement the rasp and physicality that bookmarked her singing.

Following an action-packed solo set — at one point, she stopped the show to make sure security could attend to a fan in need of assistance — Wyclef Jean and Pras joined Ms. Hill onstage to herald the beginning of the Fugees set in celebration of The Score’s 27th anniversary. By the time the trio got into the meat of their set, the crowd — most of which looked like they experienced the height of Miseducation and The Score in real-time — didn’t have the energy Wyclef was looking for. Nonetheless, their set was just as exhilarating as Ms. Hill’s solo showcase. Between breathless renditions of “Vocab,” “Nappy Heads,” and hits like “Killing Me Softly” and “Ready or Not,” Fugees’ dynamic performance was yet another example of the old heads outclassing the new school in terms assembling an engaging and consistent live show.

Ms. Hill’s penchant for new arrangements also permeated Fugees’ set, with a drill remix of “Fu-Gee-La” drawing Wyclef into the center of the crowd as the track morphed to include snippets of Bobby Shmurda’s “Hot N—a.” Wyclef also delivered some standout solo moments, including a tender cover of Bob Marley’s classic “No Woman, No Cry” and a bombastic rendition of “911.” Given Brooklyn’s rich history of West Indian-American culture, it was a particularly rich site for Fugees to commemorate The Score , and that much was felt as Wyclef and Pras gushed about their love of Kings County, from Flatsbush Avenue to the parkway.

An intensely emotional and physical show that highlighted the multitudes of blessings music can bring in this life, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour ‘s stop in Brooklyn made for a challenging but triumphant night for two musical acts who the industry is still desperately trying to catch up to.

Fugees reunite, Lauryn Hill gets emotional at a very New Jersey homecoming in Newark

2 minute read.

lauryn hill miseducation tour 2023

It was a Jersey homecoming with all the fixins'.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour show on Tuesday, Oct 17, at the Prudential Center in Newark, had a live band, a 10-piece string section, backing singers, a horn section, a high school marching band, a giant video screen and a Fugees reunion.

Yes, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel joined Hill on stage for an extended set in the latter part of the show.

“A lot of people did not believe this would happen, including some of the people on this stage,” quipped Hill mid-set.

In June, Hill headlined the Roots Picnic festival in Philadelphia, and Jean and Pras joined her on stage, reuniting as the Fugees for the first time since 2021.

In Newark, the Fugees held it down with command and intensity on classics like “No Woman No Cry” and “Ready or Not.” The Outsidaz came out for an extended "Cowboys."

“I'm so happy,” said Jean, holding his guitar. “It's my birthday.”

Jean, who grew up in Newark, turned 54 on Tuesday. He and Pras came out after Hill delivered rhythmically lush arrangements of “Miseducation” songs. The performance was overly sprawling early in the show, but both the orchestra players and Hill found their marks as the evening settled in.

Hill, who grew up in South Orange, was emotional when she adressed the hometown audience an hour into the show.

“Thank you for 25 years,” Hill said ““Twenty-five years of support, 25 years of love.”

It's an Essex County thing.

“The thing is I've the opportunity to live all around the world and I keep coming back home to the same neighborhood I grew up in,” Hill said. “I wanted to make an album about love songs and protest music, similar to the music my parents grew up with.”

Released in August 1998, “Miseducation,” a rap/sung hybrid, became a phenomenon on the strength of the singles “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything is Everything.” It won five Grammy Awards in 1999, including Album of the Year.

Tuesday's show as the start of the tour. In 2021, the Fugees announced a reunion tour — celebrating the 25th anniversary of the group's landmark album “The Score” — that included a date at the Prudential Center. The tour was canceled due to safety concerns over the “continued Covid pandemic,” according to a group statement.

Michel was recently found guilty of 10 criminal counts in federal court in a plot to help China influence U.S. government officials. The counts include conspiracy to defraud the U.S., witness tampering, and acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign government.

He faces up to 20 years in prison, but filed an appeal Oct. 16 in Washington asking for a new trial due to his attorney using AI for his closing argument, according to Politico .

In the case of lauryn hill, many things can be true at once.

It could've all been so simple, but she's made it so hard.

Lauryn Hill Miseducation 25th anniversary tour

It must not be easy being Lauryn Hill . It can’t be.

At first glance, her set during the first of two Los Angeles stops on The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill ’s 25th anniversary tour could be perceived as more proof of her inexorable lateness . But the show itself was not in vain.

With this tour, Hill seemed to have something to prove about how she shows up for her fans. Historically, her inability to perform the studio version of her debut solo album has caused many to rush to social media with complaints about her vocal ability and stage presence, but those attempts are to condemn Hill for crimes she’s already paid for.

Wyclef Jean Reflects On The Fugees' 'Blunted On Reality' Album On 30th Anniversary

“Y’all lucky I make it on this blood-ras stage every night,” she emotionally exclaimed, loudly to the crowd. Out of context, those words could be perceived as arrogant, but they were part of a larger oration about community, support, and in some ways resilience.

Before her mother Valerie joined her onstage with her daughters Selah and Sara Marley, Hill expressed, “You have to understand who my mother is. My mother, man—without her, none of this would be possible because the reality of it is, is that not only did she give me life, but she raised me right. She gave me life and she raised me right. And that wasn’t an easy raising either, but she gave much, much love.”

The impassioned, impromptu interlude seemed like a required purge for Hill. A teary-eyed Valerie walked out as Hill spoke, causing her own waterworks to flow rapidly. The crowd erupted in praise and applause. She continued, “I’d be remiss if I didn’t salute my mother. My mother, my rock. My foundation. My stability. The woman who is consistently around. My mother raised my children. I raised my children [but] my mother raised my children. I had women in my house, strong women, and these women were the foundation on which I solidly supported myself and raised my children and poured music into the world. If any of you appreciated the music, then you owe it to this woman right here. People tell me from time to time, they say to me, ‘Hey, Ms. Hill, you know I listen to your music, your music got me through. Your music got me through, because my mother, you understand? My mother was the support that got me through. To help me get through.”

From Hill’s perspective onstage, “When the album sold any records and no one showed up and said, ‘Hey, would you like to make another one?’ So I went around the world and I played the same album over and over, and over, and over, and over, and over again!” Yet, an anonymous source told Rolling Stone in 2003, “I think Lauryn grew to despise who Lauryn Hill was […] Artists are a lot more calculating than the public sometimes knows … Lauryn put a lot of pressure on herself after all that success. And then one day she said, ‘F**k it.’” She was called “emotionally unstable” as she retreated from the public eye.

At the time, Hill found solace in a man named Brother Anthony who disguised himself behind the Christianity she clung to. Not only had she rejected her celebrity, she ostracized herself and burned bridges with the people who helped make Miseducation a masterpiece. When Hill took sole credit for Miseducation, many believed it was to prove that she didn’t need to rely on a man—i.e. Wyclef Jean or her ex-partner, Rohan Marley—to succeed. Questlove told Rolling Stone , “Her solo career wasn’t based on ‘I wanna do an album. It was based on not being Wyclef’s side girl.” But when you reportedly blow a $2 million recording budget and leave executives saying, “Columbia bent over backwards for her, in pure self-interest, and I think they still believe in her, but you can’t abuse the system like that,” there’s ample room for negative assumption.

Back in May, we called Hill’s closing headlining performance at Mary J. Blige’s Strength Of A Women Festival her penance. Was she late? Yes. Did that take away from the mesmeric outpouring of musical brilliance she left onstage? No, but this is what Hill’s legacy has been truncated to: antics that overshadow the music.

Despite recent vocal limitations , Hill’s breath control and agility were commendable for 2023. The orchestra, live band, generational inclusion of her son Josh and niece Zuri were all heartwarming. Plus a performance by The Fugees —all three, in rare form—was a once-in-a-lifetime experience amid Pras facing federal prison .

Fans were lucky to bear witness to history, and Hill’s fans still believe they’re owed an apology for her shortcomings. Both things can be true.

As Hill herself stated: “It could all be so simple, but you’d rather make it hard.” Because of the show and artist’s magnitude, we can’t attest to losing money over postponement but we can’t excuse what’s happened without constructive criticism either. Lauryn Hill can be both a genius and the enemy; a lover and a zealot; the greatest of all time and a one-album wonder.

Concert Review: Lauryn Hill’s 25th ‘Miseducation’ celebration passes with a grade curve

Lauryn Hill, re-lived songs from her iconic album in Newark, New Jersey’s Prudential Center, located about 20 minutes away from her hometown of East Orange.

But significant audio issues muffled Hill’s angelic, yet powerful voice throughout the night.

Disappointingly, “Miseducation’’ would be her only solo studio album.

They performed songs from their Grammy-winning catalog, as Hill revealed the group was unable to tour last year in celebration of the 25th anniversary of “The Score” like they hoped.

Bob Marley’s Son Rohan Praising Lauryn Hill, Ex-Girlfriend and Mother of Five of His Children, as a ‘Fantastic’ Human Being In Resurfaced Clip: ‘I Highly Respect Her’

Rohan Marley reflected on his relationship with Lauryn Hill in a resurfaced clip from an old interview on Feb. 20. Rohan’s father is “One Love” singer Bob Marley, and the 51-year-old shares five children with Hill.

Marley praised Hill during the interview and noted that outside of his famous family, Hill was his “favorite” musician. The Jamaican Marley Coffee founder and Hill dated on and off for 13 years and had five kids, including their son, Zion, who was born in 1997. Their daughter Selah was born in 1998. The couple welcomed another son, Joshua, in 2001 as well as their son, John, who was born in 2003. The duo welcomed another daughter, Sara, in 2008.

Lauryn later welcomed another son in 2011, Micah Hill, but she has not publically shared who his father is except to say that Marley is not his biological father. Marley has 12 children , including two with his ex-wife Geraldine Khawly, whom he was married to from 1993 until 1996. The former couple had their daughter Eden in 1994 and their son Nico in 1995.

The former University of Miami linebacker and the Grammy Award-winning singer met while Marley was still married to Khawly and Hill was in a relationship with former Fugees member Wyclef Jean .

Jean blamed his relationship with Hill as the reason for the Fugees breaking up during an interview with radio station Power 106 in Los Angeles back in 2012. He also claimed that the paternity of Zion was in question, but Rohan denied that Zion’s paternity was ever an issue.

Hill later wrote and recorded her debut solo album, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” while she was pregnant with Zion, and Rohan says he was with her during the entire process, including arranging for her to use his father’s recording studio in Jamaica when she needed to get a break from New York.

After being asked on the “We In Miami Podcast” in May 2022 about what it was like dating Hill, Rohan replied , “It was wonderful.”

“It was beautiful,” he continued. “I learned a lot. Maybe living together and being together as a couple and things, that doesn’t work in that sense, but as a human being, as the mother of my children, I highly respect her.”

Rohan went on to say that his five children with Hill are all beautiful and creative.

“She lets our children live and be themselves,” he continued. “I like her ideology as a person. … She’s really super f—king fantastic. … My favorite artist outside of my brothers and sisters and the reggae, Lauryn Hill is my favorite.”

Fans reacted to a clip from the interview on Instagram. One fan replied, “THIS is how a man is supposed to speak about the mother of his children! LADIES we also need to reciprocate this energy!”

“That was beautiful,” added another. Rohan and Hill reportedly ended their relationship in 2009, and the former duo became grandparents in 2017 after their son Zion had his own son, Zephaniah. Zion also has a daughter, Azaria.

No doubt the song got a boost from the release of the film Bob Marley: One Love , which depicts the critical years of the iconic reggae singer and the story behind his music.

The biopic, which was produced by Bob’s son Ziggy Marley and Bob’s widow Rita Marley, had a three-day opening of $28.6 million and is expecting $15 million in its second week.

A TikTok video by Kim Kardashian and her daughter North West that used the song likely gave it another boost. The TikTok has had about 57 million views.

YG Marley is at least the sixth member of the Marley family to enter the Hot 100.

Since the single’s release, Marley has performed the song at several of his mother’s concerts during her 2023 tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of her 1998 debut solo album, “ The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill .”
