Star Trek: The Original Series (referred to as Star Trek prior to any spin-offs) is the first Star Trek series. The first episode of the show aired on 6 September 1966 on CTV in Canada, followed by a 8 September 1966 airing on NBC in America. The show was created by Gene Roddenberry as a " Wagon Train to the Stars". Star Trek was set in the 23rd century and featured the voyages of the starship USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk .

Star Trek was later informally dubbed The Original Series , or TOS, after several spin-offs aired. The show lasted three seasons until canceled in 1969 . When the show first aired on TV, and until lowering budget issues in its third season resulted in a noticable drop in quality episodes and placed in a 10 pm Friday night death slot by the network, Star Trek regularly performed respectably in its time slot. After it was canceled and went into syndication , however, its popularity exploded. It featured themes such as a Utopian society and racial equality, and the first African-American officer in a recurring role.

Ten years later, Star Trek: The Motion Picture reunited the cast on the big screen aboard a refurbished USS Enterprise . They appeared in five subsequent films, ending with Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country in 1991, during production of the spin-off series Star Trek: The Next Generation and shortly before Gene Roddenberry's death. Several original series characters also appeared in the seventh movie, Star Trek Generations , and in other Star Trek productions.

Star Trek was created by Gene Roddenberry, whose interest in science fiction dated back to the 1940s when he came into contact with Astounding Stories . Roddenberry's first produced science fiction story was The Secret Weapon of 117 , which aired in 1956 on the Chevron Theatre anthology show. By 1963 Roddenberry was producing his first television series, The Lieutenant , at MGM .

In 1963, MGM was of the opinion that "true-to-life" television dramas were becoming less popular and an action-adventure show would be more profitable (this prediction turned out to be right, and led to series such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E ). Roddenberry had already been working on a science fiction concept called Star Trek since 1960 , and when he told MGM about his ideas, they were willing to take a look at them. As the production of The Lieutenant came to an end, Roddenberry delivered his first Star Trek draft to MGM. The studio was, however, not enthusiastic about the concept, and a series was never produced.

Roddenberry tried to sell his " wagon train to the stars " format to several production studios afterward, but to no avail. In 1964 , it was rumored that Desilu was interested in buying a new television series. Desilu was a much smaller company than MGM, but Roddenberry took his chances, greatly aided with the help of Desilu Executive Herb Solow . This led to a three-year deal with Desilu in April 1964 .

The first attempt to sell the Star Trek format to broadcasting network CBS (Desilu had a first proposal deal with the network) failed. CBS chose another science fiction project, Irwin Allen 's more family-oriented Lost in Space instead of Roddenberry's more cerebral approach. But in May 1964 , NBC 's Vice-President of Programming Mort Werner agreed to give Roddenberry the chance to write three story outlines, one of which NBC would select to turn into a pilot.

One of the submitted story lines, dated 29 June 1964 , was an outline for " The Cage ", and this was the story picked up by NBC. Now, the daunting task that Roddenberry and his crew faced was to develop the Star Trek universe from scratch. Roddenberry recruited many people around him to help think up his version of the future. The RAND Corporation's Harvey P. Lynn acted as a scientific consultant, Pato Guzman was hired as art director, with Matt Jefferies as an assisting production designer. This phase of creativity and brainstorming lasted throughout the summer, until in the last week of September 1964 the final draft of the "The Cage" script was delivered to NBC, after which shooting of the pilot was approved.

The first pilot [ ]

In early October, preparations for shooting "The Cage" began. A few changes in the production crew were made: Roddenberry hired Morris Chapnick , who had worked with him on The Lieutenant , as his assistant. Pato Guzman left to return to Chile and was replaced by Franz Bachelin . Matt Jefferies finalized the design for the Enterprise and various props and interiors. By November 1964 , the sets were ready to be constructed on stages Culver Studios Stage 14 , 15 , and 16 . Roddenberry was not happy with the stages, since they had uneven floors and were not soundproof, as Culver Studios had been established in the silent movie era when soundproofing had not been an issue to consider. Eventually, in 1966 , the rest of the series was shot on Paramount stages 9 and 10 , which were in better shape.

Casting of the characters was not a problem, apart from the lead role of Captain Pike (still known as "Captain April " at this point, later renamed "Captain Winter" before finally choosing "Pike") who Roddenberry convinced Jeffrey Hunter to play. Leonard Nimoy ( Spock ) had worked with Roddenberry on The Lieutenant . Majel Barrett , also a familiar face from The Lieutenant , got the part of the ship's female first officer, Number One . Veteran character actor John Hoyt , who had worked on many science fiction and fantasy projects before, was chosen to play the role of Doctor Phil Boyce . Young Peter Duryea and Laurel Goodwin were hired as José Tyler and Yeoman J.M. Colt , respectively. The extras were cast from a diversity of ethnic groups, which was significant because integration was not a usual occurrence in 1960s television, and segregation was still a reality in the United States.

To produce the pilot episode, Robert H. Justman was hired as assistant director; he had worked on The Outer Limits shortly before. Makeup artist Fred Phillips was brought in as well, whose first job it was to create Spock's ears. Another veteran from The Outer Limits was producer-director Byron Haskin , who joined as associate producer. On 27 November 1964 , the first scenes of "The Cage" (or "The Menagerie," as it was briefly known), were shot. Filming was scheduled to be eleven days, however the production went highly over budget and over schedule, resulting in sixteen shooting days and US$164,248 plus expenses.

But there were still a lot of visual effects to be made. An eleven-foot filming model of the USS Enterprise , designed by Matt Jefferies, was built by Richard Datin , Mel Keys , and Vern Sion in Volmer Jensen 's model shop , and was delivered to the Howard Anderson Company on 29 December 1964 .

In February 1965 , the final version of "The Cage" was delivered at NBC and screened in New York City. NBC officials liked the first pilot. Desilu's Herb Solow says that NBC was surprised by how realistic it looked, and that it was "the most fantastic thing we've ever seen." The reason the pilot was rejected was because it was believed that it would attract only a small audience, and they wanted more action and adventure. They also had problems with the "satanic" Spock and the female first officer (Number One). However, NBC was convinced that Star Trek could be made into a television series, and that NBC itself had been at fault for choosing the "The Cage" script from the original three stories pitched. Also, after spending US$630,000 on "The Cage" (the most expensive TV pilot at the time), they didn't want to have their money wasted. NBC then made the unprecedented move to order a second pilot.

The second pilot [ ]

For the second pilot, NBC requested three story outlines again. These were " Where No Man Has Gone Before " by Samuel A. Peeples , and " Mudd's Women " and " The Omega Glory " by Roddenberry. Although it was the most expensive of the three, NBC chose " Where No Man Has Gone Before ", as it had the most action and most outer space spectacle. However, the other two premises were also made into episodes of the series later.

Filming the second pilot began in July 1965 , and took nine days to complete. The entire cast of " The Cage " was replaced except Spock. Jeffrey Hunter chose not to reprise his role as Captain Pike, mostly by the advice of his wife, who felt that "science fiction ruins her husband's career". Roddenberry wanted both Lloyd Bridges and Jack Lord for the role of the new captain, however both declined. Finally William Shatner , who had previous science fiction experience acting in episodes of The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits , was chosen. The new captain was named James R. Kirk (later renamed James T. Kirk).

For the role of the chief medical officer, Roddenberry chose veteran actor Paul Fix . Canadian actor James Doohan got the role of chief engineer Scott , and young Japanese-American George Takei was featured as ship's physicist Sulu . The latter two reprised their roles in the upcoming series, though Sulu was a helmsman in the series. Other actors considered for being regulars were Lloyd Haynes as communications officer Alden and Andrea Dromm as Yeoman Smith , but neither of them were re-hired after the pilot.

Many of the production staff were replaced. Robert Dawn served as head make-up artist, however Fred Phillips returned to the position in the series itself. Academy Award winner cinematographer Ernest Haller came out of semi-retirement to work as the director of photography. Associate producer Byron Haskin was replaced by Robert H. Justman , who now shared double duties as producer and assistant director.

The Enterprise model was updated for the second pilot, and many new outer space effects shots were made, most of which were reused in the series itself. The sets were also updated a bit, most notably the main bridge and the transporter room. Most of the uniforms, props, and sets were reused from " The Cage ", however some new props (including the never-seen-again phaser rifle ) and a brand new matte painting (the planet Delta Vega ) were made specially for this episode.

" Where No Man Has Gone Before " was accepted by NBC and the first season of a regular series was ordered for broadcasting in the 1966-67 television season. History was made.

The series begins [ ]

Preparation for the first regular season began in early 1966 . All the Enterprise interior sets were updated, as well as the introduction of brand new uniforms. The look of the show became more colorful and more vivid. The Enterprise model was also updated once more. Also, the entire production was moved from Desilu's Culver City studios to the main Gower Street studio's Stage 9 and 10 ( Paramount Stage 31 and 32 from 1967 onward) in Hollywood.

Kirk (Shatner) and Spock (Nimoy) were kept as the series stars, with Grace Lee Whitney joining the two as Yeoman Janice Rand (replacing Andrea Dromm as Yeoman Smith). Whitney had worked with Roddenberry a year before on an unsold pilot titled Police Story . Publicity photos promoting the new series were made at this time, with the three of them, mostly using props left from the two pilots (most notably the aforementioned phaser rifle). Shatner and Nimoy wore their new uniforms on these photographs, while Whitney had to wear an old, pilot version.

Scott (Doohan) and Sulu (Takei) were also kept, the latter becoming the ship's helmsman instead of physicist. Two additions made the Enterprise main crew complete: DeForest Kelley was hired to play the new chief medical officer, Leonard McCoy , as Roddenberry had known him from previous projects, including the aforementioned Police Story . Actress Nichelle Nichols got the role of communications officer Uhura , who became a symbol of the racial and gender diversity of the show. Nichols was a last minute addition, weeks before filming began on the first regular episode.

Jerry Finnerman became the new director of photography, while Fred Phillips, Matt Jefferies, and Rolland M. Brooks returned to their former positions. Writer John D.F. Black was brought in as the second associate producer (next to Justman). While Roddenberry and Black handled the script and story issues, Justman was in charge of the physical aspects of production.

Filming of the first regular episode, " The Corbomite Maneuver " began on 24 May 1966 . Finally Star Trek debuted on NBC with a "Sneak Preview" episode at 8:30 pm (EST) on 8 September 1966 . NBC chose " The Man Trap " (the fifth episode in production order) to air first, mainly because they felt it was more of a "traditional monster story" and featured more action.

The first season [ ]

In August 1966 , several changes were made in the Star Trek production staff. Roddenberry stepped down as line producer and became the executive producer. His replacement was Gene L. Coon , who also regularly contributed to the series as a writer. While Black had also left the series, story editor Steven W. Carabatsos came in, sharing story duties with Roddenberry and Coon. To handle post-production, Edward K. Milkis was brought in by Justman. Carabatsos had left Star Trek near the end of the season, and was replaced by D.C. Fontana , formerly Roddenberry's secretary and a writer for the series.

Due to the overall length of the episodes of The Original Series , several minutes of each episode are frequently cut during the show's reruns, notably on the Sci-Fi Channel . Starting in April 2006 , the G4 network began airing the full length episodes in "Uncut Marathons" on Saturdays. G4 stopped airing these full-length versions in November 2006, and has discontinued its run of Star Trek 2.0 , which was a trivia-oriented and interactive version of the show for the viewers.

The Original Series has been nominated for and won a number of awards over the years. Some of the awards include:

• The series was nominated for thirteen Emmy Awards during its run, but did not win any.
• It was nominated eight times for the "Best Dramatic Presentation" Hugo Award , sweeping the nominees in 1968. It won twice, and Roddenberry won a special award in 1968.
• The 2003 "Pop Culture Award" in the TV Land Awards .
• The 2005 Saturn Award for "Best DVD Retro Television Release."

Remastered [ ]

On 31 August 2006 , CBS Paramount Television announced that, in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Star Trek , the show would return to broadcast syndication for the first time in sixteen years. The series' 79 episodes were digitally remastered with all new visual effects and music. The refurbished episodes have been converted from the original film to high-definition video, making it on par with modern television formats.

The 10 best Star Trek: The Original Series episodes of all time

Boldly go where no binge-watcher has gone before.

Star Trek took televised sci-fi mainstream.

That isn’t hyperbole. It’s historical fact. While shows like The Outer Limits, The Twilight Zone and Lost in Space preceded Star Trek , none of those shows broke through and created a fandom as widespread and enduring as the original adventures of the starship Enterprise .

Since 2011, Netflix has made Star Trek: The Original Series available for streaming in the US. But that era will end on September 30, 2021.

If you’re a sci-fi fan, or even a Star Trek fan who has never really delved into The Original Series , this is your last chance to watch the show on Netflix. Out of the 79 installments in TOS , which episodes should you actually binge?

To get a good sense of what The Original Series is actually like, here are 10 essential episodes. These might not be everyone’s “best” episodes of TOS , but if you watch these ones in this exact order, it’s the fastest hack to get at what all the Trekkie fuss is about. Only mild spoilers ahead for Star Trek: The Original Series .

“The Corbomite Maneuver”

On Netflix: Season 1, Episode 11

Netflix wants you to start watching TOS with “The Cage.” Resist! This is not a great way to start the series.

“The Cage” was an unaired pilot for Star Trek , later retconned into a flashback within the episode “The Menagerie.” While some fans may argue you’ll want to watch “The Cage” to get the backstory of the series, starting with “The Cage” will just confuse you as to why people like this show. Tonally, it’s nothing like the rest of TOS . And the cast, other than Leonard Nimoy as Spock, is totally different.

For this reason, start with “The Corbomite Maneuver.” Why? Well, even though it was the 10th episode ever aired, this episode was the first regular episode ever filmed. Unlike the two pilot episodes (“The Cage” and “Where No Man Has Gone Before”) the actors in this episode are, for the most part, in the roles we know and love them for. The episode begins with Spock saying something is “fascinating” and then, after the title credits, Kirk is walking around without his shirt. The vibe of this episode is amazing, the tension is excellently handled, and the final twist is utterly absurd. This is what classic Trek feels like.

“The Menagerie Parts 1 and 2”

On Netflix: Season Episodes 12 and 13.

Here’s where you can get your dose of “The Cage” and fully understand Spock’s relationship to his captain before Kirk: Captain Christopher Pike. Although this is a two-part episode, the time pretty much flies by.

Because Strange New Worlds comes out in 2022, this story is essential to understanding where Spock was before TOS , not to mention who the hell Number One is. The way this episode frames “The Cage” in the context of the regular series is also super-smart; basically, the regular characters watch parts of another episode of Star Trek.

Also, across the franchise, any Star Trek episode that involves a courtroom drama of some kind is usually a winner. Weirdly, combined with “Amok Time,” this episode might lead you to believe that Spock tries to hijack the Enterprise all the time. He doesn’t. But it sure seems that way.

“Balance of Terror”

On Netflix: Season 1, Episode 15

Everyone loves to talk about the Klingons in Star Trek , but before the Klingons were ever introduced, the first and best big Trek baddies were the Romulans. As episodes of TOS go, “Balance of Terror” is tightly plotted and emotionally affecting.

Because long-time fans take this episode for granted, we tend to forget about the innovative reveal of the Romulans in general. If you don’t know why the reveal about the Romulans is huge, I won’t spoil it here. Let’s just say it was very gutsy for TOS to create an evil empire that had very close ties to one of its greatest heroes. Also, the slow-burn spaceship battles absolutely slap.

Don’t mess with Kirk.

“A Taste of Armageddon”

On Netflix: Season 1, Episode 24

This is a bit of a sleeper episode of TOS , and it’s massively underrated. Almost every good thing about classic Star Trek happens in this episode. Revealing the premise is a bit of a cheat, but let’s just say the plot involved Kirk and Spock fighting against a culture totally reliant on algorithms and automation.

The twist in this episode is all about what things this particular culture has automated. And when Kirk and Spock figure the culture’s secret, the space sh*t hits the fan big time.

Kirk and Spock don’t always fight to the death, but when they do, they do it in style.

“Amok Time”

On Netflix: Season 2, Episode 1

A classic. You already probably know that Spock and Kirk are supposed to fight to the death in this one. But if you don't know why, exactly, this episode will blow you away. This is the first time we get “live long and prosper,” and a ton of background on the planet Vulcan. From Discovery to the reboot movies , a ton of Trek flows from this single episode.

There’s a lot of ass-kicking in this episode. You’ve been warned! It may be too awesome to handle!

“Mirror, Mirror”

On Netflix: Season 2, Episode 4

In The Original Series , this one episode was the only visit to the evil universe in which Starfleet is basically a conquering force, and Spock has a little goatee. The Mirror Universe returned big time in both Deep Space Nine and Discovery , and all the rules of that hyperbolic dimension were established here. This episode is over-the-top and full of heart, two elements that made TOS the memorable and charmingly upbeat franchise launcher it was. But seriously, this episode is very over the top. Be ready.

“The Doomsday Machine”

On Netflix: Season 2, Episode 6

As the title suggests, the Enterprise faces off against a giant automated weapon even more powerful than the Death Star! When this episode first aired in 1967, the titular “Doomsday Machine” didn’t look very cool.

However, the remastered version of this episode (which is the Netflix version) looks fantastic. Plus, in this episode, you get another Federation starship, the USS Constellation ! Finally, although The Wrath of Khan calcified the franchise’s obsession with Moby Dick , that tradition started right here.

“The Trouble With Tribbles”

On Netflix: Season 2, Episode 15

You’ve heard of this one. There are these fuzzy little balls called tribbles, and they’re all over the place. Although the kitsch in this episode is cranked all the way up to eleven, the episode totally holds up. Come for the tribbles, but stay for Kirk’s awesome cutdowns throughout the entire episode. A lighthearted romp that is a classic Trek outing for a reason. Also, the Klingons are silly AF in this one.

“The Enterprise Incident”

On Netflix: Season 3, Episode 2

Season 3 of TOS is often derided by hardcore fans, and sometimes for very good reasons. Overall, the batting average of TOS Season 3 is fairly low compared to the previous two seasons.

However, the excellent espionage episode “The Enterprise Incident” is not only super-fun but also a semi-direct sequel to “Balance of Terror.” This list is biased in favor of the Romulans over the Klingons, and this is one Romulan episode that delivers.

“The Tholian Web”

On Netflix: Season 3, Episode 9

Perhaps not the most tightly written episode of TOS , “The Tholian Web” is beautiful from a visual standpoint. From the zany all-silver spacesuits to the concept of tiny ships weaving an energy web around the Enterprise , to a certain character haunting the crew members as a space ghost, this episode has it all.

Don’t think about the plot too much. Just embrace the gonzo visual sci-fi aesthetic of classic Trek, and you’ll have a great time. As a bonus, “The Tholian Web” later became a backdoor canon Rosetta Stone for two episodes of Enterprise and nearly half of Discovery Season 1.

There’s obviously a lot more TOS to love and enjoy, so if you are curious about other great episodes after you binge these ten, think about hitting up: “The Devil in the Dark,” “The City on the Edge of Forever,” “The Naked Time,” “Shore Leave,” “Arena,” “Journey to Babel,” “A Piece of the Action,” “A Private Little War,” “The Galileo Seven,” “For the World Is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky,” and “ All Our Yesterdays.”

So if you’re about to follow our advice and help yourself to all the Star Trek , here are at least some highlights you can look forward to as you boldly go absolutely nowhere outside.

The Cage (The Pilot)— A fascinating curiosity that has now become all the more interesting given Star Trek: Discovery ’s rejuvenation of Captain Pike , the Enterprise captain before Kirk.

Where No Man Has Gone Before (Episode 3)— This is the actual first episode of the show, the new pilot now featuring Kirk in the captain’s chair, despite the fact that it aired two episodes in.

The Naked Time (Episode 4)— A bizarre space virus essentially gets the crew...drunk? High? It’s the perfect mix of goofy and sci-fi Trek action.

The Corbomite Maneuver (Episode 10)— An incredible example of what could make Star Trek ’s more strategic take on space combat so fascinating, as Kirk brings the Enterprise through a tough scrape with a powerful foe.

The Menagerie, Parts 1 and 2 (Episodes 11 and 12)— This actually was an excuse to reuse a bunch of footage from “The Cage,” but it’s recontextualized in a fascinating way that adds further depth to Spock.

The Balance of Terror (Episode 14)— Quite literally the greatest episode of Star Trek ever. Kirk encounters the mysterious Romulans in a chilling, intense game of cat-and-mouse that is about so much more than just a deadly battle.

The Galileo Seven (Episode 15)— This isn’t just the origins of a great Star Trek episode concept (shuttlecraft mission goes awry), but a fascinating examination of conflict between the crew of the Enterprise and Spock’s alienness.

The Squire of Gothos (Episode 17)— You can’t recommend original Trek without at least one “So the crew basically encounters God” story. In this one at least, the god is Trelane, an extravagantly foppish and delectably camp omnipotent being.

Arena (Episode 18)— Come for Captain Kirk two-handedly thumping a space-lizard, stay for the powerful examination of the dark, primal heart of humanity when its back is against a wall.

Space Seed (Episode 22)— Meet the iconic villain of what is still the best Star Trek movie , as Kirk and the crew reawaken the genetically-enhanced Khan, and address a grim part of humanity’s dark history in the process.

Errand of Mercy (Episode 26)— The Federation and the Klingons go to war, and the Enterprise finds itself on the front lines with a Captain Kirk shocked by his own brutality.

The City on the Edge of Forever (Episode 27)— One of the most iconic time-travel love stories ever told, as McCoy, Spock, and Kirk find themselves thrust into 1930s New York and encounter the mysterious Edith Keeler.

Amok Time (Episode 1)— Our first visit to Vulcan explores the culture of its logic-adherent beings and proves to be a tumultuous, fascinating (and, uh, very horny ) episode for Spock.

The Doomsday Machine (Episode 6)— The Enterprise goes up against a horrifying weapon of mass destruction and Federation bureaucracy in equal measure.

Mirror, Mirror (Episode 4)— See one of the genre-defining parallel universes come to life as Kirk and his officers find themselves flung to a sinister alternate universe where the Federation is a tyrannical empire.

I, Mudd (Episode 8)— If you watch one Harry Mudd episode, let it be this, a goofy romp which sees the titular rogue attempt to trap the Enterprise crew on a planet of powerful androids.

Journey to Babel (Episode 10)— Another great Spock episode, as we meet his parents (including his human mother) for the very first time.

The Trouble With Tribbles (Episode 15)— Star Trek goes full-on comedy with an incredible, hilarious romp that also happens to be about overbreeding fuzzballs and uneasy tensions between the Federation and the Klingons.

A Piece of the Action (Episode 17)— Star Trek had plenty of “planet of the weird Earth history stereotype” episodes, and they’re great fun. This one? Planet of the 1920s mobsters!

A Private Little War (Episode 19)— Kirk grapples with the ethics of intervention when he believes a low-tech planet may have acquired weaponry from the Klingons.

The Ultimate Computer (Episode 24)— Kirk faces another hyper-advanced A.I., a classic Trek trope, but with a twist: this one’s made by Starfleet itself, and will replace him as captain of the Enterprise if it outwits him!

Assignment: Earth (Episode 26)— A peculiar story that sees Kirk and Spock thrown back to the 1960s, only to discover they’re not the only unlikely beings hidden on planet Earth. What’s weird and fun is that this was actually a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff series that never got off the ground.

Spock’s Brain (Episode 1)— Look. It’s not good , per se. It’s arguably not even average. But just once in your life, you have to experience DeForest Kelley, with the utmost seriousness, turn to William Shatner and say (of Spock) “His brain is gone .”

The Enterprise Incident (Episode 2)— An intriguing examination of just how far our heroes are willing to go to outfox the Romulans, as an erratic Kirk leads the Enterprise into forbidden Romulan space.

Spectre of the Gun (Episode 6)— Here’s another of those goofy “planet of the Earth history stereotype” episodes, but this time it’s the O.K. Corral!

Day of the Dove (Episode 7)— Kirk finds himself battling his own crew as much as he does the Klingons when mysterious beings attempt to pit the Enterprise and a Klingon vessel against each other.

The Tholian Web (Episode 9)— Investigating a missing starship (that actually goes on to play a huge part in the development of the Mirror universe), Kirk and crew encounter the almighty, mysterious Tholians.

Wink of an Eye (Episode 11)— The Enterprise meets an alien species who experience time at a much slower rate, allowing themselves to be invisible to the human eye.

All Our Yesterdays (Episode 23)— The penultimate episode of the show (and so good compared to what was the actual last episode that it might as well be the final story) sees the Enterprise investigate missing colonists on a planet due for evacuation, only for Kirk, Spock, and McCoy to be thrust out of their elements.

Star Trek is bringing fans a new movie in Star Trek: Section 31 which will feature several well-loved characters in the franchise, including Captain Rachel Garrett.

Star Trek: Section 31 is a secret organization in the Star Trek universe. It is portrayed as a covert operations and intelligence agency that functions inside the United Federation of Planets. In contrast to Starfleet's idealistic and utopian ideals, Section 31 is prepared to use dubious methods and transgress moral standards in order to further the Federation's objectives and fans will see all of these in Michelle Yeoh's anticipated movie Star Trek: Section 31 . Aside from the exciting plot, the Star Trek: Discovery's spinoff will feature several extras from Star Trek aliens and the return of some favorite characters, including Garrett, previously played by Tricia O'Neal. The character was first introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation "Yesterday's Enterprise" in 1990. It was also the last time she was seen, so many were surprised by Garrett's return to the franchise in Section 31 because she hadn't been seen for decades.

William Shatner Reveals One Condition To Reprise Role in Star Trek

Kacey Rohl's casting in Star Trek: Section 31 was reported in January, but it wasn't until recently that her character was confirmed. Rohl will be playing a younger version of Garrett, the captain of the USS Enterprise-C, a predecessor to the USS Enterprise-D. She responded to a distress call and ordered the Enterprise to engage with the attackers -- four Romulan Warbirds -- at Narendra III.

Screenwriter Craig Sweeny admitted to Variety that he aimed to "deliver an entertaining experience" in the upcoming film that is true to the Star Trek lore and would appeal to potential new fans. The addition of Garrett would give old fans a good feeling because the character was familiar to them. On the other hand, the new audience doesn't have to worry if they do not know the character because they will not miss anything if they fail to notice it. According to Alex Kurtzman, the Star Trek executive producer, they have to deliver to their primary fans while winning new audiences to ensure the future of the franchise.

Kurtzman said this about pleasing their fanbase.

You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans. You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.

Garrett was a fearless and bold captain. She made a sacrifice to end the Federation's war with the Klingon Empire by defending the latter at Jean-Luc Picard's advice . Picard told her that sacrificing a Federation Starship to defend the Klingon outpost from the Romulans would be seen by the Empire as an honorable act and could potentially end their feud with the Klingon Empire. Garret did what she needed to do, even if it cost her life. Her sacrifice moved solid Star Trek fans and she made a mark on the franchise despite her brief appearance. A younger version will also be a treat for fans who want to know more about the backstory of the brave captain.

Additionally, Garrett's return in Star Trek: Section 31 could be revisited in the context of Section 31 's clandestine operations. Given Garrett's reputation as a skilled and courageous captain, her involvement with Section 31 could add an intriguing dimension to the organization's activities. Section 31 is a secretive and covert organization within Starfleet that operates outside the bounds of traditional Starfleet regulations to protect the Federation's interests and Garrett's sacrifice was a perfect example of that. Garrett had to be the sacrificial lamb in order to keep the Federation solid.

Star Trek : Section 31 is expected to hit theaters in 2026.

‘Star Trek: Section 31’ First Look Revealed With ‘Academy’ Details, Plus Glimmer Of ‘Legacy’ Hope

The new Star Trek Universe of streaming TV launched in 2017 with the first season of Discovery . As that series is winding down with the fifth and final season arriving next week, it’s a good time to look to the future of the franchise. And that is exactly what Variety has done with an in-depth cover story sporting a weighty title: “ The Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans .”

This includes a first-look image and details (and spoilers) for Section 31 and the upcoming Academy series. There is also a tiny bit of hope for Star Trek: Legacy .

First look, and a surprising character for Section 31

The piece in Variety is a comprehensive look at the Star Trek franchise covering a lot of ground, and that includes some insights into the upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 streaming movie, starring Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh, reprising her role as Emperor Phillipa Georgiou from  Discovery . The piece includes this first look image from Section 31 …

There was no context added to the image. Yeoh’s Georgiou can be seen wearing her familiar Section 31 black leather and she appears to be whispering to a character with a significant amount of technology fused to their head, giving off a particularly cyperpunk-ish Borg-ish feeling.

Yeoh has characterized the Section 31 movie as “ Mission: Impossible in space,” and screenwriter Craig Sweeny talks about his approach, telling Variety : “It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers. I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it.” Sweeny also acknowledges how the dark world of Section 31 is “almost antagonistic to some of the values of ‘Star Trek,’” but explains:

“Famously, there’s a spot for everybody in Roddenberry’s utopia, so I was like, ‘Well, who would be the people who don’t quite fit in?’ I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field. These are not people who necessarily work together the way you would see on a ‘Star Trek’ bridge.”

Before the Section 31 streaming movie wrapped last week, Variety was invited to watch some of the filming in Toronto and writer Adam B. Vary describes one of the sets as “an opulent nightclub with a view of a brilliant, swirling nebula.” He then then drops a big spoiler about a character not previously known to be part of the movie:

A few minutes later, dozens of extras in all manner of outlandish eveningwear file into the club, several of them made up as classic “Star Trek” aliens that fans might be surprised to see in this kind of swanky establishment. But I’m far more distracted by a different discovery: Georgiou is standing with a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a character first introduced on “Next Generation” as the older fearless captain of the USS Enterprise-C.

Rohl was announced to be part of the cast in January along with six other actors, but it was not known she would be playing a young Rachel Garrett , a memorable character played by Tricia O’Neill from the classic TNG episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”  Garrett also got a notable mention in season 3 of Picard — a statue of the famous captain (aka “the red lady”) was a clue to a terrorist attack in the 25th century.

The inclusion of Garrett is our first indication of when the Section 31 movie is set, as the character was active in the mid-24th century. This could mean the movie is set between the TOS movie and TNG eras. However, it’s also possible there could be more time travel elements involved as Georgiou was last seen jumping back in time (via the Guardian of Forever) from the 32nd century.

Glimmer of hope for Legacy

Executive producer Alex Kurtzman acknowledges adding a character like Rachel Garrett is the kind of connection primarily aimed at Trek fans, saying: “You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans. You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.”

Variety also confirms that Paramount+ and Kurtzman are still looking at follow-up streaming movies:

Should “Section 31” prove successful, Yeoh says she’s game for a sequel. And Kurtzman is already eyeing more opportunities for TV movies, including a possible follow-up to “Picard.”

Of course much has been reported about the idea of a “Star Trek: Legacy” followup to  Picard which would include characters from season 3 and more “legacy” characters from the franchise. One way to test that concept would be to do a streaming TV movie, which could work as a backdoor pilot for a series. Speaking to TrekMovie last month , Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas said he was open to the idea: “For me, I would just need this crew, I would need this cast, and as long as that was a possibility, we would figure something out…”

Setting confirmed and new Academy details

The new Variety piece also has a couple of tidbits about the upcoming Starfleet Academy series, which is set to start filming later this summer. One thing is that it officially confirms that will be set in the 32nd century, established by Star Trek: Discovery . Academy co-showrunner Noga Landau says this setting is helpful as it offers more freedom as the target young adult audience (like the characters) are new to this world, explaining:

“These are kids who’ve never had a red alert before. They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”

The Variety piece takes us into the Academy writers’ room at Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout offices in Los Angeles, where he also serves as executive producer and co-showrunner for the series…

Kurtzman tells the staff — a mix of “Star Trek” die-hards, part-time fans and total newbies — that he wants to take a 30,000-foot view for a moment. “I think we need to ground in science more throughout the show,” he says, a giant framed photograph of Spock ears just over his shoulder. “The kids need to use science more to solve problems.” Immediately, one of the writers brightens. “Are you saying we can amp up the techno-babble?” she says. “I’m just excited I get to use my computer science degree.”

Section 31 was shot on the same stages used for five seasons of Star Trek: Discovery and now Paramount+ and CBS Studios are gearing up to use the same stages for the Academy show. According to the Variety article, this will include the largest single set ever created for Star Trek. Here is how it is described:

“In one of Kurtzman’s several production offices in Toronto, he and production designer Matthew Davies are scrutinizing a series of concept drawings for the newest “Star Trek” show, “Starfleet Academy.” A bit earlier, they showed me their plans for the series’ central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada.”

This tidbit also confirms that the series will be set on Earth, back at Starfleet Academy’s traditional San Francisco setting. In season 4 of Discovery , Starfleet Academy was still part of the space-based Starfleet HQ, but Earth was seen to be rejoining the Federation in the season finale. The Variety piece also reveals that the Academy show will not just be based in San Francisco, with Kurtzman and Davies refining the 32nd century starship design language. Looking at some ship concepts, Kurtzman is quoted as saying: “For me, this design is almost too Klingon. I want to see the outline and instinctively, on a blink, recognize it as a Federation ship.”

She might just be passing through, trying to get ‘home’ to SNW time. The whole Rachel Garrett things might be a cameo. It’d be cool though if it’s set in the ‘unknown’ period.

Or maybe it will be like the Bill and Ted movies and she needs to collect historical figures throughout Star Trek’s history to solve a problem.

That would be a show called Star Trek: Relativity. ;)

that was actually going to be the movie after Nemesis according to Brent Spiner, the bad guy was going to collect all the big villains from the franchise and the Enterprise E would have gone back in time to collect their hero counterparts

Given the remark that this movie was not that expensive to make, I wouldn’t expect something as grand. I think they’re going to commit to that time period. Which fits well, I guess.

I mean it’s not that hard to do. Trek can do crazy time travel on a budget. Look at All Good Things.

That one recycled sets and casts. The action was contained within the same ship.

In all likelihood, they settled on an era between DIS/TOS and TNG in which the Mirror Universe is still close enough for Georgiou to survive without having to return there.

This is a movie. Yes a TV movie and I don’t think it means they can’t get more creative than AGT.

Now you’re probably right and it’s going to just stay in one timeline but I think it’s to soon to assume anything yet. Oddly this is the most news we gotten about it since it’s been announced

The thing is that if the premise of the series was “Georgiou, time traveler”, then it wouldn’t be a Section 31 movie, would it?

That’s an entirely different thing that relies on the Guardian of Forever being a continuing presence that keeps her leaping through time. It’s not like she’d just travel from one period to another at will, she has to step through the portal each time she moves through time.

That would make her an agent of the Guardian, which this is not it.

It’s more likely that she’ll arrive in Garrett’s era and go to work for Section 31 based on her having been an operative before during the DIS era.

She’ll likely be to Garrett’s era what Sloan was during the TNG/DS9/VOY era and Harris was during the ENT era.

Yeah you’re probably right. I’m just hoping for something a little bit more interesting. But Yeoh herself just described it as a Mission Impossible story so it will probably just stay in that time period unfortunately.

And I completely forgot about the Guardian lol. Yeah hope he at least shows up but they may cut to her already living in the 24th century.

Presumably, Georgiou should emerge through the Guardian of Forever on its unnamed planet from TOS.

Who’ll be there to pick her up? Maybe that’ll be where she meets Garrett? Maybe she’s part of a Federation science research team studying the ruins. That would be cool.

I hate to spoil, but from her run in with the guardian in Discovery, the guardian isn’t stuck on its planet anymore and took the form of an older cigar smoking fellow named Carl because the “Temporal Wars” from the Enterprize series had people misusing it. Plus the guardian could always move people through time and space, so it could send her not only anywhen, but anywhere.

The Guardian moved planets long after Garrett’s time. In her time, it should still be on the same planet he was on in TOS.

But you are right, she could reappear anywhere and at any time, not necessarily emerge through the portal.

They can also waste it like in season 2 of Picard. I have seen worse time travel stories in Star Wars, and Indiana Jones but not many.

A young Garrett would mean she isn’t a captain.

We had such a great conversation over TOS a few weeks ago and he disagreed with my love over Voyager.

I completely respected his views and we then moved on. That’s how it’s supposed to work and not be an overbearing jerk just because you don’t like my opinions.

What that other individual didn’t understand (and I know he’s reading this) is I would’ve happily had a meaningful discussion with him. I know my opinions are harsh and direct, I been a fan for over 50 years now of course they are lol.

But I am here to engage in conversation. That’s why I usually just respond to like minded people. I have never challenged anyone on their opinions since I been a Trek fan. I don’t talk to people who loves Discovery I just talked to the ones who hates it like me haha.

Blu-ray.com has a rule about not mentioning politics at all that I felt was wholly inappropriate given that movies and tv deal with political issues all the time, and I got suspended there a few times. So I completely expected a ban there when I massively violated their policies regarding that THING occupying the White House a few years back. It bums me not to be able to interact with certain posters there, but if I hadn’t stayed true to my perspective … well, I guess as Kirk said, ‘the cost would have been my soul.’

Ditto for a ban at hobbytalk.com, though I think that was on a less sensitive matter (probably the most recent era of Bond films.)

I posted on trekbbs for probably ten years off and on and was constantly running afoul of one massively entitled poster who came off to me as a Paramount shilll and whomI came to regard and address as ‘false data’ — a reference to DARK STAR — and even though I was convinced to come back there a few times, I finally just decided it was unhealthy to be there (and my wife was livid after I got a death threat from somebody there that specified where I lived, which indicated a certain level of commitment on their part.) Also, nearly everybody I admired there is now gone from trekbbs, including posters who financially supported the site, so despite the volume of traffic, it doesn’t seem anywhere near as interesting place, based on my occasional look-ins. Unlike blu-ray.com, which I still read for information and wish I could submit corrections to on matters historical, I don’t feel bad for missing out on participating at trekbbs anymore.

I don’t know why the other now-gone poster here was going on the way he did with you, but I do get that sometimes you have to keep trying to get your POV across regardless of cost. But I’d say that what he did is definitely not the way!

But yeah it probably happens to everyone at some point. I was also banned from a site based on my other nerdy hobby which are Disney parks lol. Been to every single one worldwide and was recently at WDW back in January.

Anyway it was about 10 years ago and I was on this Disney site for 5 years and got banned because I was caught using an alias because I was trying to avoid another member there who got a little too clingy with me and all this drama persued (we had met each other in person at Disneyland with others) and it just got too much.

I tried to explain to them why but they said it creates too many problems with people using different aliases to stalk others although I was using it to avoid someone who I felt was semi stalking me lol. When I always say we need ignore buttons here I always think about that experience lol.

It wasn’t a huge deal and me and that other person ultimately stayed friends later actually (and they got kicked off themselves). And you do get way too wrapped up into these sites and why I stopped doing social media years ago. Saved me a ton of grief and useless drama.

But yeah it happens. That other guy probably feels a little lost and angry right now (again ALL his fault and no one else to blame… seriously) but in the end it will probably be a good thing for him and he can stop obsessing over so much silliness and drama he caused for himself.

This stuff is supposed to be fun and he just came off way too miserable and angry most of time. In a few months he’ll probably realize this was ultimately a good thing and remember these boards aren’t supposed to be your life. I haven’t been this excited about an article in a long time!

Not one of the producers said anything that indicates they understand what makes Star Trek, Star Trek. Their characterization of the fan base reveals their bias. What they call the ‘toxic’ fan base, it’s really anyone that is critical of these drastic moves. There has been no meaningful effort to incorporate fan criticism, so if they listen, it goes in one ear and out the other. Their understanding of Trek is superficial at best.

If they understood it better, that would be held against them! That’s true in any job, at least in my experience. Tptb are great for exploiting underling smarts, but if they had to listen, their heads would explode as their egos crumpled. That’s a big reason why companies die.

The problem though, is it’s hurting the franchise. They speak in this article as if they can’t do it without the fans. Their response is to reference more old stuff. Not give it meaning and purpose. One example – Turning Spock into a bumbling idiot because his Vulcan DNA was removed not only hurts the character, but also shows they are either disregarding what has been established. Vulcans are not genetically predisposed to be emotionless, it’s a choice they made. Because it was more important to them to do a comedy episode, as opposed to respecting the character. That is a fundamental misunderstanding of Trek. Passionate fans that complain about that and similar are labeled “toxic”. Well.. we’re dealing with writers that don’t have the affection for the property that we do. They treat it with their own level of disdain and toxicity. If someone is resulting to personal insults, then I agree with you.. but I know plenty that aren’t. If this braintrust is listening, they’re disregarding after they do, because nothing they have “course corrected” on, is what they should be course correcting on.

Not caring for the work of said writers is entirely fair, but a declaration that they don’t care about Trek as much as you do because you dislike their work definitely isn’t.

Did it make sense, in terms of genetics vs. training, when Spock reverted to the emotional state of his distant ancestors in “All Our Yesterdays”? And I wish I had a nickel for each time it was implied on TOS that his suppression of emotion was problematic not because it was problematic for all Vulcans, but specifically because he was half-human.

“Charades” was a one-off, comedic episode (and not, for the record, one I was particularly fond of). In the grand scheme of the franchise it registers hardly as a blip one way or the other, let alone being of sufficient impact to view it as some kind of grand betrayal of the Spock character. (To put this into context, back in the day many fans and D.C. Fontana herself regarded the rewrites on her script for “The Enterprise Incident” as a betrayal of the Spock character.) We all want great storytelling, but with respect this stuff can be taken way too seriously.

Why do past failures give latitude to forget 50 years of Trek mythology that has now been firmly established? Given that Vulcan history and physiology has been explored much more since then means the creative overlords can and should do better with those aspects. I don’t fault wanting to do a comedic take with Spock. We’ve seen that plenty.. but I’m not going to give them a pass when they have exhaustive resources (even if it’s just memory alpha) to know how this works. I’ll even take it a step further and say they probably inentionally ignored it for their own selfish purposes to tell this story. Just like with the Gorn, they were too lazy to try to work around it, so they just made up their own reasoning. I’m glad you enjoyed it. If they had gotten canon right, and come up with a better reasoning behind his behavior, I’d have been ok with it… but it’s also that this isn’t a one episode aside. They’ve consistently made Spock seem nothing like his future self. It’s pretty much impossible to believe that this Spock is the progenitor to the Nimoy Spock we see in TOS and beyond. They do not take this character seriously. That’s a big problem for me. Sorry if that’s something that bothers you, but what they’ve done with Spock on this show bothers me.

TOS did the same with Spock.

“All Our Yesterdays” had Spock reverting to a more primitive and less logical state like his ancestors were because he was 5000 years in the past. Which made no sense to me.

“This Side of Paradise” also had Spock behaving more like a human because of spores.

Spock on SNW is supposed to be like the Spock we see in “The Cage”. I’m hoping as SNW continues, that we see him evolve more into the Spock of TOS.

But he’s not like Spock in the Cage. So SNW posits (along with Disco, where they gave Spock an unnecessary learning disability) that Spock as a character, has any indication of an exceptional hybrid of two races UNTIL somewhere between SNW and TOS? What is that sixish years? So we go from bumbling, awkward, and otherwise unqualified to one of the best Starfleet has to offer in that span? This is the problem. At this point in his career, I feel like we should be seeing it by now. I don’t believe that this character is the same guy he’s supposed to become. “I Want the Ship To Go!” It’s not funny, it’s sad.

I have been saying this about SNW’s butchering of Spock for some time on here so agree with every sentence you write, I hate this version of Spock and like you it doesn’t even feel like Spock to me. The less said about the Gorn the better but If you are gonna do a prequal show centered around TOS then surely have some respect for it’s canon or maybe just not do a prequal show at all.

No, it doesn’t feel like Spock. Totally agreed. But at least we now know this show is in a different timeline, which gives the writer’s room latitude to change the character a bit. One of the best things SNW has given us is the solid message the timeline is now altered. Canon is now null. I am thankful for that. So, THIS Spock is a candy as$,, yup. And the Gorn, in this timeline, are much different.

There is a point at which not caring about one’s craft, and dumbing down a product from a high-quality one to cheap yuks, suggests not caring.

There has been really pretty awful writing for TOS characters in both movies and SNW. Hopefully it doesn’t get any worse.

As much as I don’t like the 32nd century (the way they did it in Discovery), it makes total sense, if you read this article and the interview with Kurtzman posted here.

As far as a Legacy movie goes, TM already set it up with Kirks corpse in cold storage. Thaw Shatner out, stick him in a transparent aluminum sarcophagus, transport him to Starfleet Command for the state funeral he never got. Then pack in the remaining ninty minutes with as many TNG era stars as possibe weeping over the body, with all the fleet museum ships in orbit rendering a 21 phaser salute. It’s a fan service wet dream come true. Shatner! Starships! TNG!! Oh, my!!

As much as I loved Picard season 3 the one thing that really rolled my eyes over was the whole Kirk fan service moment.

That really didn’t need to be there.

Yeah, it really made no sense to include that. The Genesis II device and then Kirk’s vault with “Project Phoenix” on the display. It only served to be a distraction from that whole sequence on Daystrom Station for me. The rest of the season I kept wondering when Kirk would appear.

They had a Self-sealing stem bolt on display also. Why?

That whole scene was full of stupid easter eggs. That was when I lost all respect for that show.

Please please please bring back The Monster Maroons Unrebooted. Update the fabric but don’t add or subtract anything. Make them just the same! Make them Prime Universe Monster Maroons! And show us the Excelsior and Ambassador classes and the end of the line Constitution II ships as they start introducing the Wellington class and other classes that made up the Wolf 359 armada. That would be GOOD fan service and give the show continuity we adore.

Nope, it’s now just generic grimdark dystopian fantasy, rather than telling optimistic stories with some science mixed in with the fiction.

Trek stagnated the moment they became OBSESSED with legacy characters, references and easter eggs.

True, though that’s become a larger problem across much of popular culture. Look at the new Ghostbusters. And how about those teaser trailers for the new Alien and Beetlejuice? Yeesh.

And reboot movies and prequal shows. You think after Enterprise we wouldn’t need another 2 prequal shows and 3 prequal movies. There is also an Obsession with TOS and rebooting those characters.

Society is way too jaded and angry to be interested in optimism, professionalism and duty.

That might be what makes BUCKAROO so popular with Trek folks on the production side, too, that it embraces those particular aspects that embody the best of old Trek. The BUCKAROO movie was a colossal disappointment to me for the most part (except for the casting, the fantastic-looking ship-crashing-through-wall moment and the terrific end credits), but I’ve read the novel at least 15 times and found it a ton of fun.

I enjoyed the trailer for the movie, not the movie itself.

This is kind of sad though. I mean I feel like asking why? But this issue can actually be a good point for Trek to take a stab at. Trying to anaylze why societies get like this and how it can be solved or if it can solved by optimism or positivity.

Starfleet Academy: 32nd century

Just my opinion, but Mirror-Georgiou is a terrible character to build a story around.

Alex Kurtzman. “You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans. You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.”

It is too bad that Fuller didn’t follow that adage way back in 2017 when Discovery was just on the drawing board. Things could have been so much different than those first six abominable episodes. They could have still introduced the same story, new ideas and characters without completely ditching what came before. IMHO, just making Michael “slightly” more typical Starfleet would have made a world of difference.

So excited to hear all these things in the Variety article. I was already cautiously optimistic about S31 and I can’t wait for S3 of SNW, but now there is plausible hope for Legacy and I am even looking forward to SFA. For now, I am not holding my breath, but let’s see what they deliver in Discovery S5. LLAP everyone!

Kurtzman was there ahead of Fuller and technically ‘over’ him so blame for DSC’s original sin needs to be shared to include him. And presumably he helped make sure none of Meyer’s ideas reached fruition on the show as well.

And recently I found out Meyer was still coming up with good ideas into the late 90s. His short-lived involvement with TOMORROW NEVER DIES flirted with the idea of Bond being seduced — not literally — by the baddie because the guy’s plan would ultimately save many lives, though require millions to die first in a couple of countries in order to make the subsequent paradise possible. It sounded like doing a large-scale version of CONSCIENCE OF THE KING’s backstory for 007 and of course the Eon people hated Meyer’s ego so he was soon gone, but … ‘if only … if only.’

Looks like SNW will only debut in 2025. I was really hoping for this year. Oh well.( The Hollwood murder mystery sounds intriguing though)

I have said I was 100% confident we are going to get Legacy something. It’s a NO BRAINER (how many times have we all said that as well).

Now per usual have to make clear this doesn’t mean it’s happening but what it DOES make clear is it’s on the table as I was always sure it would be. In the end they may decide not to go forward with a litany of reasons but OF COURSE it was going to at least be considered once they had to start thinking about what’s next.

And look at that, this is literally the first possibility they mentioned of what could come next. Again is that a coincidence that comes out in their splashy Variety article, of course not. I worked in PR and marketing for years, they want to get fans thinking about the possibilities now or if wouldn’t be there.

That’s why it was so annoying hearing people say to ‘move on’ as if there was anything ELSE to move on to.🙄

Again this what is so frustrating sometimes. You don’t HAVE to want it. I certainly didn’t want the Khan show (ugh) and I said it many many times. But I would never tell others who did want it to stop talking about it.

And the difference was the Khan idea (ugh) like the Section 31 idea was a very mixed bag in terms of reception. They obviously knew that and changed course. The Legacy idea never was. In fact it was just like the Pike show idea and only existed in fans heads but the outpouring over it was amazing. And when executives saw how much they pushed for it is when they started to take it seriously and here we are. People kept saying they want it was the ONLY way people would ever even get it.

And Kurtzman had said months ago he HEARD THE FANS just like what he said about SNW. Yes it’s not 2020 anymore, there is not as much motivation (or money) to make five shows but obviously they are going to keep making more shows so yeah it was always possible that could be one of them in time.

But clearly they are nowhere near that level. I doubt the movie idea is more than just that, an idea. But it is great they understand the fandom and what fans want. That’s pretty obvious with Section 31 as well and including a well known TNG although she was only in one episode and died lol.

But look at the excitement over this one character? Now people who hated this movie idea are suddenly more intrigued. That’s just good marketing, period.

When on IMDB, when you read what they Wanted to do on some of these films and episodes but couldn’t due to budget constraints, is amazing. Check it out. One example, TNG’s “Cause and Effect” was written as a CONSTITUTION class vessel coming through the rift, but budget-wise all they could do was redress the Reliant from WOK. Sometimes the vision, Most times I would imagine, doesn’t make it to the screen. How cool would that have been.

I remember reading that Ron Moore wanted the E-B to barrel-roll out of spacedock at the start of GEN, which might have been a nod to how Sulu has the Ent do victory rolls near the start of Diane Duane’s awesome THE WOUNDED SKY.

Any movie in the 25th century would do for me but would love to see a Klingon movie post Picard season 3. The have done nothing great with Klingons since DS9, Discovery made a complete mess of them in all honesty. They were ok in Enterprise but I loved every Klingon episode in TNG and DS9, really miss that in modern Trek. A Klingon movie involving Worf, now you’re talking.

Yeah the Klingons after the backlash they got in Discovery is probably what did it.

But we finally saw them again on SNW last season and obviously Worf in Picard. But I’m with you, I would love to see more Klingons in the 25th century. I would love to know if Martock is still the chancellor. It’s a little surprising they haven’t mentioned him in either LDS or PRO (besides the Ferengi rip off game the Lower Deckers play).

Picard referenced in his captain’s log in the TNG episode “Reunion” that K’mpec ruled the empire longer than any other chancellor, so it’s possible that Martok is still chancellor by the time PIC concludes. I am interested to know not only the state of the Klingon empire, but after 30 years how much have the Cardassians been able to rebuild?

I think Martock is still chancellor as well. Gowrom also lasted about 12 years which is probably long too and probably would’ve been one longer if Worf didn’t kill him lol.

Same here. While I’d say Riker has been my favorite returning character (both for his Picard and Lower Decks roles), Worf really gave him a run for his money that season. Really hope we see him again, whether it’s on Legacy or somewhere else.

I would not have guessed early 24th century. I thought it would be either in the 25th century after Picard, and possibly feature Bashir, or in the 23rd century at around the same time as SNW, and feature Ash Tyler/Voq. It will be cool to see an era that hasn’t been explored much.

I had the same idea of Star Trek Legacy being a tv movie first before going into series.

Yep this is definitely the smart way to go first, especially if the money isn’t there for a full on show yet.

Establish Captain Seven, maybe bring in a few new characters and plot a course where the show could head into the 25th century.

I recall a lot of us thinking UPN should have commissioned TV movies like Star Trek: Excelsior. For years they did Shockwave Cinema/Thursday/Friday Night at the Movies which included a number of original TV movies, most of them sci-fi. I recall one starred Kate Mulgrew, even. Definitely cheaper than a Star Trek movie, but they’d have gotten great ratings.

He’s right. No one is watching any of these new shows but old fans. Most people I know has never even heard of Discovery, Lower Decks or SNW.

The problem is Trek just feels too nerdy for a mass audience but the second you try to change it up and make it Star Wars, Marvel or GOT then you lose the old fans.

Yeah Star Wars died with Luke Skywalker for me personally, as a Gen X person there is very little good will left from me for Disney Lucasfilm. And i liked Ahsoka and somewhat like The Bad Batch, but i can’t forgive what they did to Han, Luke and Leia.

Exactly. Which is literally why we have shows like Picard and SNW today. Why Janeway is staring in Prodigy. Why LDS is a nostalgia fest. That’s the point.

They want new fans but it’s the old fans they can rely on again and again because the new fans just aren’t as committed. That’s also why the Kelvin movies imploded and Prodigy got cancelled because they were specifically made to attract new fans but had mixed results in the end although the Kelvin movies at least started out more promising.

I’m pretty certain most people who will be watching season 2 of Prodigy will be old fans and now on a much bigger site to draw them in.

They all think that on another streaming service the viewership might change. I am inclined to agree. That’s why having Prodigy on Netflix is a win/win. More exposure for Star Trek might encourage more fans to come aboard.

Once he got to age 85, my grandfather treated himself to a new car for first time since his late 50s, a Mustang, even though his gorgeous old Ford Galaxie was going strong (with less then 80K on it after all those decades.) I know that older 300hp car was awesome, having taken it up over 100mph on a stretch of Lawrence Expressway in 1980 (and dusting a hotted-up ‘stang in the process.)

Totally disagree, Picard actually was different in First Contact than the series also. But in Picard season one he was much older and retired from Starfleet for an acceptable reason. Why would he be exactly the same when his life had changed so much. Season 3 he was very much back to his same but older self and his relationship with Riker in that season was fantastic as they had built a real friendship over the years. I love what they did to Picard as he was put in situations where he was vulnerable, aged and not in the same control as he was before. I saw that SNW decided to do another big swing in the form of a Hollywood murder mystery. Then again they did a musical so what else is there left to do? I do like the new science set although not sure putting all that water in was worth it cost wise. Sad we have to wait until 2025 but with all of the special effects not entirely surprised either.

I remember reading that Bryan Fuller wanted to make Discovery an anthology type of show. I think with these streaming movies they are kind of doing this “Star Trek Anthology”. I think it is a good idea and probably more cost-effective than having full series all the time. And they can be used as a ground to test if they can be turned into Tv shows when the ones already on the air finish. In fact I think Trek needed to go into this TV-movie or Streaming movie business earlier. So for example they can do a Legacy movie next and then perhaps turn Michael Dorn’s klingon show pitch into another movie after that. And whichever one of these movies becomes the most successful can be turned into a full on series.

I love how there’s so much potential to explore different parts of Star Trek’s timeline, and that they’re actually going through with that with some of these projects.

Section 31 being set in the era between TOS’ movies and TNG is the most exciting thing they’ve revealed about the movie IMO. Though I’m also glad Michelle Yeoh seems to be so passionate about the show and character. This was the project I was more skeptical about, though the same was true for Prodigy and Lower Decks, so I did want to keep an open mind, and now I’m starting to get more excited for what they’ll do with the story.

I was more interested in Starfleet Academy, and am glad to see them going back to the 32nd century. While I know not everyone cares for it, I actually do enjoy Discovery quite a bit, and have been intrigue about this era since it was introduced. However, while I’ve liked what they’ve shown off on Discovery (other than not caring for the Burn explanation), I’ve felt like there’s much more they could do with the setting if it was used on a different series, so here’s the chance. And the idea for the show itself seems like a great way to explore Star Trek’s themes, stories, and universe in a pretty unique way.

Ricky thinks Captain Garrett was a great character and memorable, even though we only interacted with her in one episode. Discuss!

I don’t hate the idea of Legacy being a TV movie. The concept might be a bit thin for a series, unless it was more on the episodic side (which would be wonderful). Just happy that the idea is still swirling around Kurtzman’s production offices.

Assuming they play Garrett to the actor’s age (32) this would possibly put the setting in the early 2330s, about 10 to 15 years before the Narendra III incident.

It’d be an interesting era to explore. Enterprise B or C would be in operation. Uhura is running USS Leondegrance as a training ship. Picard would be on the Stargazer.

Who’ll be there to pick her up? Maybe that’ll be where she meets Garrett? Maybe she’s part of a Federation science research team studying the ruins. That would be cool.

This news about Cpt. Garrett definitely made me a bit more excited about this Sec. 31 film.

Well George Takau as Sulu showed up in a dream sequence with Boimler in season 3 of LDS. Still counts lol.

Sulu showed up in Flashback with Janeway and Tuvok, so I count that as a valid appearance, even if it only took place inside Tuvok’s mind, heh. Same for Rand.

I don’t count Koenig voicing Chekov’s descendant in Picard. Unfortunately, Nichols having a cameo in a post TNG series will never happen now.

I think the cast is very good and exciting, can’t say much about the story. I mean it genuinely could be good this time, but section 31 was one of the worst things about Discovery.

4 Strange New Worlds AR Wall Can Be Disorienting For The Cast

Elsewhere in the Variety feature, Anson Mount discusses Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' use of the AR wall to create alien backdrops. Where previous Star Trek shows had used a greenscreen, the LCD screens that make up SNW 's AR wall allow the actors to actually see the environments that they're acting against . While it's a benefit, it doesn't always create a great experience for the actors, as Anson Mount points out.

“The images on the walls start to move in a way that makes no sense,” [...] “You end up having to focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.”

However, Ethan Peck says that he doesn't get disoriented by the AR wall, wryly joking that Spock wouldn't be fazed by it, so he's simply method acting. Hilariously, Anson Mount also reveals that they refer to the AR wall as the Holodeck. The route that actors take to the AR wall on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is even decorated with posters of the holodeck, and a sign that reads "Weclome to the Holodeck" in the classic Star Trek font.

While news of Star Trek: Legacy is absent from Variety 's sprawling feature about the future of the franchise, Alex Kurtzman does drop a small hint about continuing the story of Star Trek: Picard . It's long been suspected that Star Trek: Section 31 will pave the way for more Paramount+ exclusive movies . This is confirmed by Kurtzman, who is already considering potential follow-ups should Section 31 be a success. A follow-up Star Trek: Picard movie is one of the projects that Kurtzman is considering, but there's no further information as to what this would be.

2 Toby Haynes' Star Trek Movie Is An Origin Story For The Entire Franchise

Variety has confirmed that Seth Grahame-Smith's Star Trek movie, to be directed by Andor 's Toby Haynes, will be an origin story for the entire franchise . More interesting still is that the movie is rumored to be "on track" for pre-production to begin by the end of this year. This suggests that the theatrical release Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie could form part of the 60th anniversary celebrations in 2026. Star Trek: First Contact did something very similar for the 30th anniversary celebrations in 1996, so it will be interesting to see how a new movie continues that story 30 years later.

1 The Flight Attendant's Steve Yockey Is Working On Star Trek 4

Yockey is the latest writer to work on the kelvin timeline's finale..

While Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie currently appears to be on track, Star Trek 4 remains in development hell. The Variety feature states that Paramount still intends to give Chris Pine's Star Trek movies a final chapter, but not much has changed since the last disappointing update. However, it has been confirmed that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey is now working on a new draft of Star Trek 4 , but there's no further information than this. While the Kelvin Timeline movies still being stuck at the scripting stage may be disappointing, it's hard to deny that the future of the wider Star Trek franchise looks very bright indeed.

‘Star Trek’: Rachel Garrett, the First Female USS Enterprise Captain, Will Be Part of the ‘Section 31’ Movie

“ Star Trek ” fans got a couple fascinating details in a March 27 report by Variety on the future of the franchise on Paramount+. The biggest for sure is that the character of Rachel Garrett, the first female captain of the USS Enterprise, will be appearing in the “Section 31” direct-to-Paramount+ movie that’s going to star Michelle Yeoh .

The actress Kacey Rohl will be playing Garrett, who was the captain of the Enterprise-C in the first half of the 24th century and was the subject of one of the most beloved “Next Generation” episodes ever: “Yesterday’s Enterprise” (she was played by Tricia O’Neal in the original episode).

This is the episode where, once they’ve agreed to face their doom, Picard says, “Let’s make sure history never forgets the name Enterprise.” If Kirk didn’t believe in a “no win” situation, she faced one head-on, making Garrett an especially valiant captain.

In the “Star Trek” timeline, she’s the first female Enterprise captain. In order, the timeline goes: Jonathan Archer of the pre-Federation Enterprise NX-01, James T. Kirk of the Enterprise NCC-1701 and Enterprise-A, Alan Ruck’s John Harriman of the Enterprise-B (this writer chooses to believe that since the lore does say Harrison came from “a prominent family,” that he is in fact a descendant of Connor Roy, thus winning the ultimate succession: the Enterprise captain’s chair), and then Garrett.

One other interesting detail emerged in that report: That the “Starfleet Academy” show, which IndieWire told you a year ago must logically have a 32nd Century setting as a follow-up series to “Discovery,” is in fact confirmed to be set then, but, surprisingly, is being targeted to a “tween and teen” audience.

Jonathan Frakes, who’s directed episodes of every “Trek” series since “Next Gen” in addition to playing Riker on that series and beyond, is quoted in the Variety piece as saying that he thinks the franchise’s audience is older. Franchise mastermind Alex Kurtzman seems to hope that a show like “Starfleet Academy” may reach a new audience altogether.

Reps for Paramount+ did not respond to IndieWire’s request for comment about confirmation of these details.

Details on Paramount+'s upcoming Star Trek: Section 31 movie have so far been as top-secret as its namesake Starfleet spy agency. But now we know one of the characters who will encounter Michelle Yeoh 's Philippa Georgiou - and she's an important part of Star Trek history. A new feature in Variety goes behind the scenes of the filming of the streaming-original film, which recently wrapped filming , and reveals that previously-announced cast member Kacey Rohl ( Hannibal ) will be playing Rachel Garrett, a character who captained the USS Enterprise-C in the classic Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Yesterday's Enterprise".

Little else is known about the upcoming film; it was originally planned as a series, but with Yeoh's busy schedule following her groundbreaking Best Actress Oscar win for Everything Everywhere All At Once , it was compressed into a single standalone film. It will follow Georgiou's work for the shadowy Starfleet intelligence agency Section 31, following her return to the 23rd century in the third season of Star Trek: Discovery . In addition to Yeoh and Rohl, it will also star Omari Hardwick , Sam Richardson , Sven Ruygrok , Rob Kazinsky , Humberly Gonzalez , James Hiroyuki Liao , Joe Pingue , Miku Martineau , and Augusto Bitter .

Who is Rachel Garrett?

In "Yesterday's Enterprise", which aired in 1990 as part of The Next Generation 's third season, the 24th-century Enterprise-D finds itself confronted with its long-thought-destroyed predecessor, the Enterprise-C , captained by Rachel Garrett ( Tricia O'Neil ). Somehow, the Enterprise-C being thrown into the future has altered the future; instead of the relatively peaceful galaxy familiar to the show's viewers, the Federation is embroiled in a desperate war with the Klingon Empire . The crew soon realizes that the Enterprise-C must respond to a Klingon distress call in its own timeline, even though it means the ship will be destroyed by the Romulans ; Garrett is soon killed in an ambush by the future Klingons, forcing helmsman Richard Castillo ( Christopher McDonald ) to take over the ship with Enterprise-D security officer Tasha Yar ( Denise Crosby ), leading it to its fate in the past. Ultimately, the Enterprise-C 's sacrifice averts war with the Klingons and restores the Enterprise-D 's future to its rightful state, while Garrett and her crew are remembered as heroes. However, the Enterprise-C 's legacy later came back to haunt the Enterprise-D ; Yar survived and bore a half-Romulan daughter, Sela, who would become one of the crew's recurring foes.

"Yesterday's Enterprise" is considered to be one of The Next Generation 's finest episodes. Collider's Liam Gaughan deemed it to be the best episode of season 3 , calling it a "fascinating look at a darker version of the setting we know and love" while also serving as a proper sendoff for Tasha Yar, who had been unceremoniously killed off in the show's first season.
