Depuis ses débuts au 19e siècle la maison de sellerie et de maroquinerie Hermès incarne le voyage, les destinations proches ou lointaines, le changement mais aussi un certain d’esprit d’évasion. C’est s’inspirant de ces voyages que Jean-Claude Ellena nous a propulsé en 2010 vers ses voyages à lui, des voyages parfumés, des voyages éphémères mais qui savent perdurer dans le temps par la main du maître qui exécute pour nous un Voyage d’Hermès que l’on n’oubliera pas.

Quand Jean-Claude Ellena emmène hommes et femmes dans un Voyage Hermès rêvé…

Bien sûr, la maison Hermès avait déjà proposé des flacons mixtes par l’intermédiaire de son Eau d’Hermès ou bien encore de ses colognes puissantes et magnifiques telles l’Eau d’Orange Verte. Mais cette fois Jean-Claude Ellena va plus loin en offrant pour la première fois chez Hermès un parfum mixte, aérien il est vrai mais pourtant si présent, le beau et si délicat Voyage.

Voyage ne sera donc pas seulement un parfum d’évasion, il sera aussi un parfum de peau, une fragrance qui s’ouvrira en fonction de la peau de chacun, presque comme si chacun avait un Voyage d’Hermès tatoué en son corps.

« Ni Monsieur ni Madame... mais pas androgyne pour autant. Comme une ligne claire mais trompeuse, sous laquelle se cacherait en réalité, quand on a un peu laissé reposer le parfum sur la peau, des volutes de tel ou tel ingrédient. Bref, un parfum qui fait des détours et voyage lui aussi sur votre épiderme... »  L’Express à propos de Voyage d’Hermès.

De plus Voyage représente à merveille la quintessence du style si particulier de Jean-Claude Ellena. Entre ombres et lumières, entre présence discrète et peinture olfactive impressionniste, Voyage nous étonne et nous transporte. Pourtant il est silence et calme là où d’autres se font tempétueux, sucrés et gourmands, et c’est là la magie du parfumeur. Voyage est et sera une nouvelle fois un parfum intemporel comme c’est si bien les proposer depuis 1951 la griffe Hermès.

Voyage d’Hermès et sa note de thé envoutante si « ellenesque »

Si Voyage d’Hermès est unique il en est pas moins, comme nous l’avons déjà remarqué, très représentatif du style si particulier de compostions de Jean-Claude Ellena. Outre ses abstractions olfactives, il nous fait penser à de nombreuses autres œuvres de ce peintre impressionniste.

Ainsi la fameuse note thé de ce Voyage n’est pas ans référence à une des compostions précédentes du parfumeur l’Eau Parfumée au Thé Vert de Bulgari qui mit en valeur pour la première fois une note de thé dans un parfum. Quant à l’hédione du cœur de Voyage, elle est aussi une signature apposée du parfumeur impressionniste tant il l’utilise avec délice dans de nombreux parfums tels Déclaration de Cartier.

Toutefois si Voyage est très symbolique des compostions de ce grand parfumeur qu’est Jean-Claude Ellena il n’est pas moins unique. Son départ s’offre comme un bain d’agrumes toniques et vivifiants tout juste réchauffés par quelques épices. Le cœur quant à lui hésite à basculer entre des notes florales, des notes fraiches d’hédione ou bien encore des notes vertes. Enfin l’iso E super et les muscs blancs se délivreront en profondeurs selon les Voyages de chacun.

Being absolutely infatuated by Terre d’Hermès , I was keen to see what else the historical French house had to offer. When I discovered that Voyage d’Hermès was a unisex fragrance that I could share with my wife, I was excited to give it a try.

After having used Voyage d’Hermès for a number of months, it was time to give it a full review using the  Fragrance Formula  to see how it fares.

Following the success of the 2010 eau de toilette of the same name, Hermès released the parfum edition in 2012. Also created by the in-house nose, Jean-Claude Ellena, the parfum promises an enriched experience with a composition of citrusy aromas, spicy blends as well as herbaceous green notes and precious wood.

Voyage d’Hermès Composition

With a rich floral heart over a woody and musk base, Voyage d’Hermès is a proud member of the Woody Floral Musk olfactive sub-family.

Heart Notes

As the citrus and pepper notes fade, we’re revealed a floral bouquet featured rose, juniper and sweet jasmine. The juniper adds an almost herbaceous note reminiscent of cedar yet the cardamom continues to persist throughout the heart.

Voyage’s Life-Cycle, Wake & Strength

Although deep and heady, Voyage is far from overpowering. The notes cycle through their dry-down with a few transitional notes extending others along the way. As mentioned above, the cardamom is really what makes this fragrance sing and is omnipresent throughout its lifespan.

Although the projection and sillage are both quite tight and stay relatively close to the skin, the longevity is impressive. Although you may want to re-apply after a couple of hours, the fragrance’s performance keeps on giving well after its application.

What Do People Think Of Voyage d’Hermès?

Others also enjoyed the bouquet of spices and woody notes but since the cardamom is firmly fixed in the limelight, it’s the one that receives all the glory. Of course, if you don’t let the smell of cardamom, this isn’t a fragrance that you’ll enjoy!

Being a very deep and sensual fragrance, it was better received by more mature people from their thirties and above. However, it’s a very contemporary if classy blend. Conversely, it came across as a little too prominent for younger people. Nevertheless, it’s a fragrance that both men and women find attractive and this universality is probably the secret to its success.

When To Wear Voyage d’Hermès

Both the time of day and season play large roles in when to successfully wear this fragrance. Firstly, its cardamom and spices aren’t something that you’d wear for winter despite being deep and sensual. In fact, it fares far better during the late spring and summer.

However, it’s probably too heavy and musky for a summer’s day. Instead, it’s the perfect companion for balmy summer nights. Thanks to its paradoxical fresh and warm notes, it complements the heat and offers something that is both unique an alluring.

As for the age range, it’s perfectly wearable for anyone in their late twenties but is probably more suitable for someone who is established. Therefore, it’s a great fragrance for those in their thirties, forties or above.

In terms of occasion, it can be quite versatile. As much as it’s a respectable office fragrance that isn’t overpowering for small workplaces, it’s best reserved for the nighttime. Therefore, whether you’re just going out, staying casual or enjoying your evening, it’s a wonderful companion. We’d even suggest it as a unique alternative for dating!

Finally, Voyage d’Hermès is a strange beast when it comes to the masculine. On paper, its notes are rather masculine and sound like something best worn by men. However, it’s very much a unisex fragrance that can be bought by anyone or even shared by a couple.

Presentation and Value For Money

Nevertheless, it’s visually appealing and looks great when positioned at an angle on your shelf. The parfum distinguishes itself from the eau de toilette by being made from black glass rather than white, which looks almost midnight blue under the light.

Furthermore, there’s no bottle cap and the atomiser can be unscrewed for refilling. Once you’ve run out, there’s no need to buy another bottle but a plain refill, which is slightly cheaper. Speaking of the atomiser, it performs well and provides a burst of thick mist. It’s solid and well-made so doesn’t squirt out like a water gun.

Meanwhile, the packaging is very attractive too. The cardboard features a herringbone texture on the front, top and back with beige sides. An embossed stripe wraps around the cardboard to look like a ribbon whilst “Voyage d’Hermès” is elegantly written in silver text with underscores.

As for the value for money, know that Voyage d’Hermès is a particularly expensive and premium fragrance. Retailing well above $100 for 3.4 Oz (100 ml), it’s quite the investment. However, being an original and well-performing fragrance, it’s worth taking the plunge.

However, you can pick up it for less on Amazon where it’s sold for only $80 . Meanwhile, you can pick it up for $77 through FragranceX !

Closing Thoughts

A very contemporary yet timeless fragrance, Voyage d’Hermès is a unique and tantalising experience. Its spicy and woody themes beautifully showcase the vivid cardamom note, which is unforgettable.

If you’re looking for something that performs well to wear on those summer nights, this is an excellent pick. Furthermore, it’s one that you can share with your partner if she or her has taken a liking to it too!

I love the sound of this frag. How would you rate it for dating and night life?

It depends what you mean by “night life”. I think it’s too subtle for night clubs and would quickly become drowned out by other smells. However, it’s a great choice for dating and offers a unique alternative scent for romantic occasions.

Hello Carlos, Well, don’t know where to start with, but, went to the nearby mall at my home city (Mumbai, India) looking for something similar on the lines of Davidoff’s CoolWater (DCW) as this one has been my absolute favorite for office wear. I am no enthusiast in terms of EDTs and/or EDPs but started my journey in the world of one’s ownself (care) when 4 years back I was gifted a CalvinKlein CK In2U EDT by one of my friend as a birthday gift and from there on, this journey of self admiration started to say the least (pun intended). CK in2U opened the floodgates towards Davidoff’s CoolWater (as Both of them are Fresh/Aqua based EDTs and after more than a couple of years of trying CK in2U, Davidoff’s CoolWater, Nautica’s Blue (all Fresh/Aqua based) I went on the same tram lines to search for something similar (after reading what similar EDT notes would criss-cross with DCW), Had Bvlgari’s Aqva, Atlantiqve and Marine in mind and then my senses were blown away by a somewhat pricer option that the salesman suggested me to give a try and it was this gem: (not the Parfum version) but the EDT Voyage De’Hermes and it sure did take me on a Voyage De’Cardamom the moment that mist spray touched me. I told him, give me ¾th of an hour and if this EDT matures, beyond Cardamom, you will surely have a new customer (me). And yes, it did marure and I am a proud owner of this,today… 6th March,2021.

Hi Alex, Yes, the agarwood base features a light oud note but as it’s not particularly heavy, it’s quite refreshing. Although this is great for a winter’s day, it’s even better for a summer’s night! I was surprised too but I’ve owned it since Christmas and I’ve been impressed by its performance in the evening heat. Best, CP

Sure ,they have something secret in formula on this fragrance. Very nice fragrance but also expensive.

Most perfumers are very secretive about their actual formulae so yes, that’s very true. It’s true that it’s also somewhat pricey but it’s such a great fragrance that I’d argue that it’s worth it!

Hi Charles Philippe.Sorry to bother you again.I will never buy perfume from Amazon.com anymore.I saw and bought Voyage Edt at a much cheaper price from amazon.I was looking forward to my favorite perfume.He came I opened it and the smell was completely different. It doesn’t look like the original at all and doesn’t last long. I’ve also read negative reviews of other perfumes. They’ve also written fake ones. Even Voyage D’hermes Parfum. My advice to you is to buy a real original Voyage D’hermes Parfum from Hermes.com, Hermes stores or Sephora. Believe me, you will feel the real difference. Voyage perfume on Hermes.com is $ 155, on Hermes.fr 122 €

Terre d'Hermès Hermès (2006)

Terre d'Hermès – meaning 'Earth of Hermès' – was launched in March 2006. Perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena was inspired in the creation of the fragrance by the works of author, Jean Giono.

The fragrance features notes of orange, gunflint, flint, vetiver and benzoin. The bottle was designed by Hermès designer, Philippe Mouquet, and features an 'H' cut into the base of the bottle.

The fragrance was joined by a Parfum version in 2009 , and more recently Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche in 2014.

Review: Voyage d'Hermès by Hermès (2010)

The idea of a perfume taking you on a trip has been a cliché for quite some time, so when you encounter a new creation which dares to call itself Voyage, you can’t help but raise your eyebrows and wonder if this isn’t tempting the gods of disdain just a little too much. But the top notch pedigree of this new release – the nose responsible for it is Jean-Claude Ellena, whose place amongst the greats of perfumery is secure – persuades you to push aside any prejudices and take the first sniff with a clear head.

Voyage d’Hermès opens with an immediate, gently bracing freshness: green citrus notes – most notably a delicious lime – smile their way into the air around you, followed by a hint of Ellena’s trademark glassy, white musks. Then comes the most interesting part: there’s a burst of mango peel, which leads to a scattering of fenugreek, which is then followed by shavings of unostentatious woods, after which a spicy sweetness starts making its presence felt, only to be countered by what comes across to me as the elegant dryness of saffron. Those who take an interest in M Ellena’s work will probably enjoy a wry chuckle at this point, because, as has already been pointed out by several other reviewers (see http://jaimeleparfum.wordpress.com/2010/03/21/review-voyage-dhermes/ ) the voyage with which we’re being presented is essentially a hop from one Ellena fragrance to another, with extended stays in his Jardin scents. The final destination is, unsurprisingly, the land of the aforementioned musks. This is perhaps something of a let down after the excitement of the first few minutes, and you do spend several moments wondering whether you’ve really arrived or you’re stuck in some waiting lounge somewhere. But after a short while, you realise that, wherever they may be, your surroundings are impeccably elegant – if slightly bloodless – so you shrug your shoulders and just sit back and relax.

Voyage is marketed as a unisex scent and whilst its classically sleek, luggage-tag-shaped bottle is suitably non-gender-specific, I wonder if Hermès shouldn’t have stuck their leathered necks out on the line and declared it an all-out masculine. The move might have aligned the fragrance a little out of the ‘safe’ territory it seems to want to inhabit and it would probably have made it a more intriguing addition to the market. Still, it’s a solid piece of work and will no doubt prove popular to those who don’t wish to attract too much attention to themselves. I just happen to prefer voyages that kick up a little more dust.

So glad you reassessed Voyage. To me, cardamom fiend that I am, it is this spice that made me fall in love with it almost immediately. I have both the EDT and the parfum and I wear them exclusively in summer because they bloom in the heat.
