Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of the U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the U.S. by air, land or sea .

There are a few notable exceptions pertaining to land and sea border crossings:

  • U.S. citizens on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas or Bermuda are able to re-enter the U.S. with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card. Acceptable proof of citizenship includes a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization and a government-issued photo ID (such as a driver's license). Passports are required for cruises that begin in one U.S. port and end in another.  
  • Children under the age of 16 who are citizens of the U.S. or Canada are exempt from the passport requirement for land and sea border crossings. In lieu of a passport, children are able to use a U.S. state-issued original or certified copy of their birth certificate (hospital certificates are not acceptable) or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, or a Certificate of Naturalization as proof of citizenship for entry into the U.S. by land or by sea. Children entering or re-entering the U.S. by air are required to have a valid passport.  
  • A new, lower-cost alternative to the passport, called a passport card, is acceptable for entries into the U.S. by land or sea. The passport card is not acceptable for air travel.

Photocopies of required documentation are not acceptable in any circumstance.

Even though passports are not required at this time for U.S. citizens who sail on cruises to the above destinations that begin and end in the same U.S. port, we strongly recommend that all cruise passengers travel with a valid passport anyway. This is because guests who need to fly to or from the U.S. unexpectedly during their cruise will likely experience significant delays and complications related to booking airline tickets and entering the U.S. if they do not have a valid passport with them. For example, a passenger missing a cruise departure due to a late inbound flight to Miami would need a passport to fly to meet the ship at the next port. Similarly, guests needing to fly to or through the U.S. before their cruise ends because of medical, family, personal or business emergencies, missing a ship's departure from a port of call, or a mechanical problem of some sort with the ship, would need a passport. Of course, situations like these are rare, but they can happen.

Passports are not required for U.S. citizens traveling to or returning directly from Hawaii or a U.S. territory, including Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Swains Island, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

Passports are required for cruise travel to all International destinations not mentioned above, and for cruises that involve air travel that begins or ends outside of the U.S. Passports must be valid for at least six months after the last day of travel.

Legal U.S. Residents (Non-Citizens)

Legal permanent residents of the U.S. must have a valid passport from their country of citizenship and a valid Alien Registration Card (Green Card) to enter or re-enter the U.S.

Non-U.S., Non-Canada Citizens

The following countries participate in a visa waiver program with the U.S., and citizens of these countries must have a machine-readable passport for entry into the U.S.:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom

Citizens of the countries listed above who do not possess machine-readable passports, and citizens of countries not listed above must present a valid passport and a valid United States visa upon entry into the U.S. For those whose travel plans include multiple entries into the U.S., such as a cruise that begins and ends in a U.S. port, a multiple-entry visa is required.

All travelers, including U.S. and Canada citizens , are responsible for verifying visa requirements with consular officials, and obtaining visas where required, for every country visited during their trip, including countries visited via connecting flights.

What Do I Need To Bring for A Norwegian Cruise?

  • ­A valid passport, or
  • ­Proof of citizenship, such as original or certified U.S. birth certificates, original certificates of naturalization or citizenship, or a consular report of your birth abroad,  and  a government-issued photo identification card, or

  • Always carry your passport book with you in case of an emergency. You may need your passport in the event of an unexpected medical evacuation or if the ship docks at an alternate port. You should bring your passport even if your cruise says you won’t need it. 
  • Apply early for your  passport , or make sure your current one will be valid at least six months beyond your travel dates and has two or more blank pages. Your cruise company may also require you to have a passport even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or foreign port of entry does not. 
  • Have the right foreign visas for all stops on your cruise, if required, even if you do not plan to disembark in those locations. 
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) . You will get important safety and security info. Follow us @TravelGov on Twitter , Facebook , and Instagram for travel and security information. 
  • Make sure you have medical and emergency evacuation insurance that will cover your trip. Consider buying supplemental insurance. U.S. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover medical costs overseas. 
  • You may also need other insurance for unexpected travel expenses when abroad. Check with your cruise line or travel agency to see if they provide such coverage. You can also check with your health or homeowner’s insurance providers and credit card companies, which sometimes provide this coverage overseas. If not, consider buying supplemental insurance.
  • Have a contingency plan for returning home if you must remain in a foreign country longer than expected. Make color copies of your passport photo page, foreign visas, and itinerary. Leave one copy with a trusted family member or friend and carry one separately from your actual documents. Make sure to take a photo of your travel documents with your phone to have electronic copies as well.

Medication and vaccination requirements: 

  • Check with your doctor to make sure that traveling abroad to your destinations is  medically safe  for you and whether you need any vaccinations and/or assistive devices on your trip.  
  • Check with the foreign country's embassy in the United States. They can tell you whether your medications are legal in each country you visit. Also, find out if there are limits or special instructions for bringing them in. For some medications, you may need a letter from your doctor. Carrying it in the prescription bottle might not be enough “proof.” Remember, you are required to follow the local laws of the countries you visit, including with respect to medications, even if those laws differ from the laws of the United States.
  • Ensure you have enough of your  prescription medications  to last beyond your trip dates, in case of possible delays. Some countries may not have equivalents of your prescription and over-the-counter medications. 
  • Carry a written copy of all your prescriptions with you in case a country requires it, or you need to replace your medications. 

Ask Your Cruise Line: 

  • What their procedures are in case of emergency. 
  • How family members can contact you in an emergency, such as cell or satellite phone coverage and/or an e-mail address for emergencies. 
  • What types of medical services your ship can provide, such as basic or urgent care, hospitalization, dialysis, etc. 
  • Check your cruise line’s prohibited items list when considering what to take with you. 

During Your Cruise: 

  • Remain vigilant and exercise normal precautions aboard a cruise ship and on shore, as you would whenever traveling abroad. 
  • Limit your alcohol intake.  
  • Ensure cabin safety and make sure the door and balcony are properly locked at all times.  
  • Consider storing your travel documents and other valuables in a secure spot, such as a safe in your room or the ship’s safe. 
  • Talk to the security personnel on board if you are the victim of a crime. The cruise ship should have procedures in place for handling a crime onboard. 
  • Follow local laws and customs. If you break the law, you may be arrested and prosecuted.
  • If you are the  victim of a crime on shore , report it to local authorities, the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate , and to cruise ship security personnel. 
  • If you lose your passport, report it right away to the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate . Make plans to get a new passport as soon as possible.  
  • Follow  CDC guidance  after you disembark.

I heard you can use a passport card for a cruise, is that true.

You can use the passport card to reenter the United States at seaports of entry from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. However, if you cannot return on the cruise ship for any reason, you will need a passport book to fly back to the United States. 

Unexpected circumstances that can make it important you have a passport book include:

  • Illness or Injury – Depending on how severe your illness or injury is, you may have to be admitted to a local hospital overseas. If you cannot be discharged before the cruise ship is scheduled to depart, the cruise ship may leave without you. In this case, you would need a U.S. passport to fly home upon clearance from your doctor. 
  • Damage to cruise ship – Occasionally cruise ships are damaged or have mechanical issues that cannot be fixed during your trip. In these cases, you might need to go ashore in a country which requires a passport and/or you would need a U.S passport book to fly home.

Your cruise company also may require you to have a passport, even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the foreign country’s border agency does not.

Here's when you need (and don't need) a passport to cruise.

It's the type of sailing – closed-loop or open-loop – that largely determines whether or not you need a passport to cruise.

Do You Need a Passport for a Cruise?

A passport isn't always required for cruising.

To determine whether or not you need a passport to cruise, you first need to figure out if the itinerary is closed-loop or open-loop (also known as open-jaw).

Closed-loop cruise: A closed-loop cruise typically doesn't require a passport since it begins and ends in the same U.S. port (though there are some exceptions to this rule).

Example: Royal Caribbean International 's seven-night Western Caribbean & Perfect Day cruise stops in several countries – the Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti and Grand Cayman – but the itinerary is considered closed-loop because it starts and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Open-loop cruise: An open-loop cruise begins in one U.S. port and ends in a different U.S. port.

Example: Carnival Cruise Line 's 16-day Panama Canal from Seattle itinerary is not considered closed-loop because it departs from Seattle and completes its journey in New Orleans.

All of the above regulations have been determined by the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative: a plan by the departments of State and Homeland Security that determines which documents are acceptable for proving identity and citizenship when entering the United States.

Where to cruise without a passport

There are several destinations where you can cruise without a passport on a closed-loop sailing. They include the following:

  • The Bahamas

When looking at cruises to these locations, be mindful of the home ports. The Bahamas, Mexico, Bermuda, the Caribbean and Canada are all foreign ports, which means they only qualify for the passport exception if they are a stop along your cruise itinerary . If the cruise originates in any of these countries, it is likely you will need a passport.

Since Alaska, Hawaii and New England are all U.S. destinations, any closed-loop routes departing from these locations will not require a passport. However, keep in mind that it can be hard to find closed-loop cruises originating in Hawaii or Alaska.

To find closed-loop itineraries for a Hawaiian voyage or Alaskan cruise , try searching for sailings departing from major cities on the West Coast, like Seattle or Los Angeles . By contrast, quite a few closed-loop cruises leave from New England ports, but they are often marketed as Canadian cruises.

When you need a passport for closed-loop cruises

Some cruise itineraries include foreign ports that require a passport for disembarkation. This is most commonly an issue for travelers on a closed-loop Caribbean cruise. Barbados , Guadeloupe , Haiti, Martinique , St. Barts , and Trinidad and Tobago all require U.S. citizens to present a valid passport to disembark and enter the country, despite WHTI regulations not requiring a passport for these destinations. Labadee, Royal Caribbean's private island , is an exception and does not require a passport despite its location in Haiti.

If your itinerary includes a country requiring a U.S. passport, your cruise line will require you to have the passport at check-in. Note that your passport must not expire within six months of your arrival in a foreign country or else it won't be considered valid for international travel.

Acceptable forms of ID

All travelers – U.S. citizens and foreign nationals alike – must present documents that show identity and citizenship when entering the United States. A U.S. passport can show both. If you don't have one or don't want to bring one, be aware that you may need to present more than one document.

U.S. citizens 16 and older

If you're a U.S. citizen age 16 or older sailing on a closed-loop cruise without your passport, you will need a government-issued photo ID like a driver's license. In addition, you must present a document that proves your U.S. citizenship. These include:

  • Passport card
  • State-issued enhanced driver's license (EDL)
  • Government-issued birth certificate
  • Trusted Traveler Program card (NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST)
  • American Indian Card (Form I-872) or Enhanced Tribal ID Card

The Trusted Traveler Programs are risk-based programs to facilitate the entry of travelers who have been vetted and preapproved. Most of these programs will provide you with a machine-readable card that allows you to pass through border checkpoints quickly. Keep in mind, some of these IDs are only available to travelers 16 and older.

U.S. citizens younger than 16

U.S. citizens younger than 16 are only required to present proof of citizenship, such as one of the following documents:

  • Original, notarized or certified copy of their government-issued birth certificate
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad issued by U.S. Department of State
  • Certificate of Naturalization issued by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services

Non-U.S. citizens

If you are a lawful permanent resident (or LPR) of the United States, you are required to present a permanent resident card or other valid evidence of permanent residence status.

Non-U.S. citizens, with the exception of Canadians and Mexicans, are not subject to passport exceptions, so a valid passport will need to be provided. Canadian citizens can present a valid passport, Enhanced Driver's License or Trusted Traveler Program card. Mexican citizens must present a passport with a visa or a Border Crossing Card.

Unacceptable forms of ID

While most common forms of identification are accepted, there are a few exceptions. U.S. military identification cards and U.S. Merchant Mariner documents are valid forms of identification, but only when traveling on official orders or in conjunction with official maritime business, so it is unlikely they will be accepted when traveling on a cruise.

Here are some other documents that will not be accepted as proof of citizenship:

  • Voter registration cards
  • Social Security cards
  • Baptismal papers
  • Hospital certificates of birth (for anyone older than a newborn)

It is important to note that many of the permitted forms of identification, such as a passport card or EDL, are only accepted at land and sea border crossings. Unforeseen circumstances, such as a medical air evacuation, may cause you to return to the U.S. by air travel. In this case, these documents won't be accepted when you try to reenter at the border crossing.

To avoid extra delays in your return to the U.S. following unforeseen travel complications, the Department of State recommends that everyone taking a cruise from the United States carry a valid passport book in case of emergency.

Proof of citizenship and photo identification will be required for your vacation. A valid US passport and visa (for certain destinations only) may also be required for your travel . Norwegian Cruise Line Passport Requirements for Cruises

Passports are required for all travelers, including citizens of U.S. and Canada, who enter or re-enter the United States by air, land or sea.

Regarding Norwegian Cruise Line to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and Bermuda, there is a notable exception to this US passport rule, pertaining to land and sea crossings for US Citizens.

US Citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port) and travel to destinations in Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, the Bahamas, and Bermuda are able to re-enter the United States with proof of citizenship other than a passport or passport card.  Acceptable proof of citizenship includes an original or certified copy of a government issued birth certificate (raised seal and signature) and a laminated government issued picture ID (typically, driver's license), Consular Report of Born Abroad Certificate, or a Certificate of Naturalization.  NOTE: Baptismal records and certificates issued by a hospital are not acceptable.

General Documentation and Visa Information

U.S. Citizens

Hawaii Cruises

There's no need for a passport when you sail on any Hawaii inter-island cruise. If your ship never sails beyond the islands of Hawaii, all you need is a government-issued photo I.D. which includes a passport or a valid driver's license with a photo. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 do not require a government-issued photo ID.

Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Or Canada & New England Cruises

For closed-loop sailings (cruises that depart from and return to the same U.S. port), you need a valid passport OR proof of citizenship and a valid government-issued photo I.D. (driver's license with a photo) or any other WHTI compliant document. Proof of Citizenship examples include: an original or state certified copy of a U.S. birth certificate, original certificate of U.S. naturalization, original certificate of U.S. citizenship, or a U.S. Consular report of your birth abroad. Baptismal paper and hospital certificates of birth are not acceptable. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 do not require a government-issued photo ID.

For open-jaw sailings (cruises that depart from one U.S. port and return to a different U.S. port), you are required to carry a valid passport, U.S. passport card, U.S. or Canadian Enhanced Drivers License, as well as have in your possession all relative visas that pertain to your travel itinerary. Permanent residents of the U.S. are required to carry their valid ARC cards for boarding AND passport from their country of citizenship, if available.

Note: If you miss your ship at its scheduled U.S. departure port and need to travel outside the U.S. to meet your ship, or should you unexpectedly need to depart the ship from a foreign port prior to the end of sailing, a passport would be required to leave or re-enter the U.S. by air. To that end, NCL strongly recommends all guests to obtain a passport for their voyage on any NCL vessel.

Europe and South America Cruises

A valid passport is required and in some cases, a tourist visa is also required.

Russia - St. Petersburg

All guests going ashore (even guests on shore excursions) must provide a photocopy of their passport details (page with picture and personal information) to the Russian Immigration Officials. Guests who purchase any available shore excursion organized by NCL will not require a visa for Russia. In this case guests will need to present a valid passport and the NCL tour ticket to the Russian Immigration Officer as they depart the ship. Please note that without a visa, the time ashore is limited to the period of the excursion and you are not allowed to leave the ship outside of the tour hours without a Russian Tourist Visa. Guests who wish to explore Russia on their own or want to sightsee after NCLs' shore excursion hours have to obtain an individual Russian Tourist Visa before leaving home. Russian Tourist Visas cannot be issued during your cruise. Guests who have not purchased an organized shore excursion with NCL and do not own a valid Russian Tourist Visa will not be permitted ashore in St. Petersburg.

The ultimate guide to Norwegian Cruise Line ships and itineraries

L ooking for a cruise where you can do what you want, whenever you want, without a lot of structure and rules? Norwegian Cruise Line could be your brand.

The Miami-based cruise line pioneered the idea of "freestyle cruising" — cruising without rigid dining schedules, dress codes and formal nights — and it's still the go-to line for vacationers who want a floating resort experience with a casual, laissez-faire vibe.

Instead of a few big main restaurants with fixed seating times, Norwegian ships offer a wide range of eateries and no assigned seating times — just make a reservation. When it's time for dinner, if you want to dress up, fine. There's no rule saying you must, though.

Norwegian vessels also offer lots of options for daytime fun but are particularly well known for evening entertainment. You'll find everything from music halls with Beatles cover bands and dueling piano bars to theaters with some of the most elaborate shows at sea — including some big-name Broadway productions.

Norwegian ships are also loaded with bars, lounges and nightclubs, including always-busy casinos. Put it all together, and you have vessels with a very lively atmosphere — particularly at night. If you had to compare Norwegian ships to something on land, you'd probably say they were like floating versions of the casino resorts you find in Las Vegas.

Just to be clear, Norwegian is a big-ship line . Its largest vessels are among the biggest cruise ships at sea (they must be, to accommodate everything mentioned above). If you want an intimate cruise experience, Norwegian probably isn't a good choice.

That said, the line does offer some smaller ships that aren't quite as big and bustling as its giants.

Norwegian is also a mass-market brand, not a luxury cruise operator. Still, as we'll explain below, it offers a wide range of accommodations, some of which fall squarely in the luxury segment. In some cases, its ships have an exclusive area full of high-end cabins and suites called The Haven that comes with its own private pools, lounge areas and even restaurants.

In short, if you want to turn a Norwegian cruise into a luxury experience , you can do that, too. Norwegian really is the line where you make the trip what you want it to be.

The Norwegian Cruise Line fleet

Norwegian is the world's fourth-largest cruise line by passenger capacity, with 19 ships that together offer 56,780 berths.

Smaller only than Royal Caribbean , Carnival Cruise Line and MSC Cruises , the brand has become increasingly known for having some of the biggest, most amenity-filled vessels at sea. The line doesn't just operate giant ships, though. More than half of its fleet is comprised of vessels that, by today's standards, are considered almost midsize.

Indeed, Norwegian is essentially two cruise lines in one. The line's nine newest ships are big, bustling floating megaresorts that can carry upwards of 3,000 to 4,000 passengers at double occupancy (and even more with every berth filled). At around 143,000 to nearly 170,000 tons, all eight currently rank among the 50 biggest cruise ships in the world (although their rankings will shift downward as more big ships debut).

However, Norwegian's 10 older ships are much more modest in size, measuring around 75,000 to 94,000 tons and carrying closer to 2,000 passengers at double occupancy.

Norwegian thus appeals both to cruisers who like a giant resort vibe and those who prefer something more modest. The key, depending on your tastes, is getting on the right ship in the fleet.

On the big-ship end of the spectrum, Norwegian's four relatively new Breakaway Plus-class vessels — Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Escape — are the line's premier offerings. While not quite as big as Royal Caribbean's giant, Oasis-class ships , they are firmly in the pantheon of the world's cruising giants. They are the Norwegian vessels most packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment and over-the-top attractions.

Unveiled in 2019, Norwegian Encore is, notably, the 23rd biggest cruise ship in the world as of this story's publishing (it will drop in the rankings over the coming years as additional megaships debut). At 169,116 tons, it's bigger than all but three Carnival ships. Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have significantly more bigger vessels.

One step down in size from the Breakaway Plus ships are the still-quite-large Breakaway-class ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — as well as the one-of-a-kind Norwegian Epic and the recently unveiled Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva .

Around 17% smaller than Norwegian's biggest vessels, Prima and Viva are the first tow of six sister ships that the line will roll out between now and 2027 that will significantly change the composition of its fleet. While not the biggest vessels in the Norwegian fleet, these ships will be notably packed with restaurants, bars, entertainment venues and decktop attractions. They also mark a more upscale turn for the line, with more space per passenger than earlier Norwegian ships and lots of suites.

Norwegian's 10 smaller vessels break down among five classes, but many are roughly the same size and offer similar amenities.

One notable outlier among the smaller ships is the 2,186-passenger Pride of America. Sporting a patriotic U.S. theme (you'll find venues named after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams), and a distinct array of lounges and entertainment, it's the only big cruise vessel based year-round in Hawaii.

Pride of America notably operates with a mostly U.S. crew, in keeping with regulations governing cruise itineraries that only include U.S. ports.

Destinations and itineraries

Norwegian sails almost everywhere in the world, but its heaviest presence is in the Caribbean, Europe and Alaska.

In a typical summer, the line will deploy nearly half its ships to Europe while sending several more to the West Coast to sail to Alaska from Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia; and Seward, Alaska. It'll also operate trips to Bermuda from New York City and Boston, usually with two ships, and trips to the Bahamas and the Caribbean out of Miami.

During the winter, the line will move many of its vessels to North America to operate sailings to the Caribbean and Bahamas. It also sends a few ships to Asia, Australia and South America, and it'll typically keep a single vessel in Europe, too.

As mentioned above, the line also operates one ship (Pride of America) in Hawaii year-round. It's the only cruise line to offer year-round voyages in Hawaii.

In North America, Norwegian ships sail out of Baltimore; Boston; Galveston, Texas; New York City; Miami; Tampa; San Juan, Puerto Rico; New Orleans; San Diego; Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Honolulu; Vancouver, British Columbia; Quebec City; and Seward, Alaska.

In Europe, Norwegian ships sail out of Amsterdam; Stockholm; Copenhagen; Oslo and Tromso, Norway; Southampton and Portsmouth, England; Le Havre, France; Reykjavik; Lisbon, Portugal; Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Trieste, Italy (near Venice); Piraeus, Greece (the port for Athens); and Istanbul.

Who sails Norwegian Cruise Line?

Norwegian appeals to vacationers who want a big-resort experience at sea with lots of options for dining and entertainment. In that, it's similar to Royal Caribbean — perhaps its closest competitor.

However, unlike Royal Caribbean, Norwegian hasn't retained any of the trappings of old-style cruising. There are no formal nights, as you'll still find on Royal Caribbean ships, or dress codes. Norwegian has also thoroughly done away with the concept of big main restaurants with fixed seating.

Because of that, Norwegian is popular with people who are seeking flexibility — freedom to eat when they want, with whom they want and to dress however they want, for sure, but also more freedom in general to just set their own schedule day and night.

Norwegian cruises are very unstructured vacations, and that's by design.

Like Royal Caribbean ships, Norwegian vessels have an inordinate amount of teen- and tween-friendly attractions — everything from some of the largest waterslides at sea to the only go-kart tracks on the ocean . That makes them particularly appealing to families, including multigenerational groups. Families are a big part of Norwegian's business.

It's not just families that flock to Norwegian, though. The line's ships are designed to offer a little something for everyone, and thus they appeal to a wide demographic, including couples of all ages and even solo travelers (the line has been a leader in adding solo cabins to ships in recent years). They also draw customers with a wide range of incomes.

At their core, Norwegian ships are mass-market ships, with entry-level cabins that are affordable to middle-class travelers. However, overlaid across most vessels are high-end suites and services that are at a luxury level, and the line draws a good number of luxury-seeking travelers.

The exclusive, keycard-accessed suite complex called The Haven (found on 13 of Norwegian's 19 ships) comes with private lounges, pools and other tony features. It's essentially a small, luxury vessel that has been planted atop otherwise middle-class, mass-market megaships. These complexes appeal to well-heeled travelers who want a luxury cruising experience while also getting all the fun attractions, entertainment and dining venues only a mass-market megaship can offer.

Cabins and suites

Norwegian is known for offering a wide range of accommodations on its ships. You'll find everything from relatively low-cost, windowless inside cabins that measure as little as 135 square feet (perfect for the budget traveler) to massive, multi-room suites that are more than 50 times that size.

At the high end, the accommodations are aimed at affluent travelers who, for whatever reason, prefer the megaship experience to that of a luxury ship, and they truly are among the most spectacular accommodations at sea.

Some, such as the giant Garden Villas found on six Norwegian ships — Norwegian Jewel, Norwegian Pearl, Norwegian Gem, Norwegian Jade, Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star — sprawl over thousands of square feet and have as many as three bedrooms plus separate living rooms and dining rooms.

The Garden Villas also have private outdoor sun decks and courtyards with hot tubs. Additionally, the Garden Villas on Norwegian Dawn and Norwegian Star include private outdoor dining areas and steam rooms.

Depending on the ship, top suites can come with perks such as private butlers and concierges who attend to your every need, access to a private restaurant, a private suite lounge and sun deck, reserved seating in entertainment venues and priority boarding and disembarkation.

On more than half of Norwegian's ships, many of the top suites are part of The Haven. Billed as an upscale "ship within a ship" and aimed at luxury travelers, The Haven is located at the very top of vessels and often comes with private lounges, pools, sunning areas and even restaurants.

Norwegian is also heralded for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships . In 2010, it debuted an entire zone of small studio cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,070-passenger Norwegian Epic, and it has since added them to seven more new ships.

The studio cabins are tiny at just 100 square feet. However, they're superbly designed to maximize storage space. On the ships that have them, they are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge where solo travelers can mingle at daily happy hour gatherings.

Restaurants and dining

Norwegian was an early pioneer of the idea of giving cruisers lots of choices when it comes to restaurants on ships, and even its smallest vessels offer a wide range of options.

On Norwegian's recently built Breakaway Plus-class ships, there are up to 20 places to grab a bite, ranging from high-end French restaurants and steakhouses to casual pubs.

Every vessel has two or three main restaurants and a casual buffet where meals are included in the fare — the latter is usually called the Garden Cafe.

Other included-in-the-fare venues found on some ships include O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar and Grill, a casual pub; an outdoor bar and grill called Topsiders; and casual Asian restaurants that go by many names including Shanghai's Noodle Bar, Ginza and Bamboo.

Also, every ship has a least four and often many more extra-charge eateries. Two found across the entire fleet are Cagney's, the line's signature steakhouse, and Le Bistro, a fine French restaurant. Every ship also has an Italian restaurant, called Onda by Scarpetta or La Cucina. There also are churrascaria restaurants called Moderno on most Norwegian vessels.

On some ships, you'll also find Ocean Blue, a seafood restaurant; The District Brew House, a gastropub serving craft beers; and a Mexican spot called either Los Lobos or Los Lobos Cantina. Every vessel has some sort of sushi restaurant, often called Sushi or Wasabi, and there are hibachi-style teppanyaki restaurants on nearly every Norwegian vessel.

You might even find Starbucks stores on some ships (the one-year-old Norwegian Prima has two!) and there are Starbucks products on every Norwegian vessel. Also, some ships have private restaurants just for passengers staying in The Haven.

Some of the extra-charge restaurants come with a flat fee (the teppanyaki outlets are $59 per person, not including the cost of drinks). However, most are a la carte, with sometimes hefty pricing. One thing you need to know upfront about going on a Norwegian cruise is that there are a lot of extra charges — and sometimes quite high extra charges — on the line's ships, particularly for things like restaurants.

A surf-and-turf dish at Ocean Blue that combines an 8-ounce filet mignon with a lobster tail costs $55, for example. If you just order a whole lobster, you'll be out $49. The least expensive entree on the menu, a roasted cauliflower steak, is $22.

If you know you want to eat at several extra-charge restaurants during a single voyage, you can buy one of several dining packages that offer meals at a discount.

Entertainment and activities

Few lines offer as broad a range of entertainment and activities on their ships as Norwegian. The line's biggest vessels offer multiple entertainment venues, from theaters to comedy clubs; a wide range of deck-top attractions; large casinos; full-service spas; and even virtual reality attractions. You'll also find a seemingly endless array of bars, lounges and nightspots.

Theaters and shows

Entertainment is one of the core areas where Norwegian excels, and if you're the kind of person who loves nights out with live music and lively performances on your vacations, you're going to love the line.

Many of Norwegian's biggest ships have state-of-the-art theaters as big as those you'd find on Broadway, with big-name productions to match. Norwegian Bliss, for instance, has the Tony Award-winning "Jersey Boys."

In some cases, the Broadway shows are cut down slightly from the original versions, and the casts aren't quite as seasoned as what you'll find on Broadway. However, these are quality productions. The best part is they are entirely free. Compare that with the hundreds of dollars you'd spend to take your family to a show in New York City.

Norwegian ships also are jam-packed with music venues. Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Epic, for instance, have the Cavern Club, a reproduction of the British club that gave rise to the Beatles. It comes complete with a cover band that plays the group's greatest hits.

There are also Howl at the Moon dueling piano bars on some Norwegian ships, and there's the lively Q Texas Smokehouse found on Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy (a music-and-food concept that pairs live music with barbecue).

In addition, several Norwegian ships offer dinner theater venues with circus-type productions, and one vessel, Norwegian Getaway, features a magic-infused dinner theater show in a steampunk-inspired space called The Illusionarium.

Several ships also offer comedy club entertainment.

Other interior attractions and activities

In addition to entertainment spaces, the interiors of Norwegian ships are loaded with other venues where passengers can kick back and let loose day and night.

All but one Norwegian ship (Pride of America) has a casino, and on the line's bigger vessels, they are huge operations. The casino on Norwegian Encore has more than 300 slot machines and 26 table games (including blackjack, roulette, poker and craps), plus its own bar.

On the line's big Breakaway-class and Breakaway Plus-class ships, the casino — along with a large proportion of all onboard restaurants, bars and clubs — sprawls across three central decks connected by an atrium-like space known as 678 Ocean Place (the name derives from the location of the decks, which on each ship are decks 6, 7 and 8). At night, these three-deck complexes become bustling places.

The Breakaway- and Breakaway Plus-class ships have innovative outdoor promenades called The Waterfront lined with seating for many restaurants and bars. The Waterfront is located on Deck 8 of each of the ships, which is one of the main decks for restaurants on them all.

Like the ships of the Breakaway and Breakaway-plus classes, the Prima Class ships have a lively zone that mixes casino space, bars, eateries and entertainment that sprawls across decks 6, 7 and 8. These vessels also have outdoor eating space in an area called Ocean Boulevard.

In addition, Norwegian two new Prima Class ships (Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva), as well as another relatively new Norwegian vessels — Norwegian Encore — have innovative gaming and virtual reality zones called Galaxy Pavilion (a fourth Galaxy Pavilion area on Norwegian Joy is being removed during an overhaul in dry dock scheduled for early 2024).

There's nothing quite like Galaxy Pavilion in the cruise world. The venue has an amazing array of high-tech virtual reality experiences, including incredibly realistic race car simulators (on Norwegian Encore, there are eight in a row along one wall), hang gliding simulators, virtual mazes and a virtual reality "Jurassic Park" ride.

The Galaxy Pavilion on Norwegian Encore is the biggest of them all. Among added features, it includes a 45-minute escape room experience laced with special effects. Themed around a Spanish galleon, it's designed to be played by up to six people at a time.

Just be warned that you'll pay a hefty fee to play in the Galaxy Pavilion. A weeklong pass to the venue will set you back $199 per person. There also are hourlong passes available for $29 per person, or you can sample a single ride for $8 (except for the escape room, which is priced separately at $15 per person).

There's also a bowling alley on Norwegian Epic and duck pin bowling lanes on Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway.

Norwegian ships also all have Mandara Spas, which can be quite big on the bigger vessels, and there are fitness centers on every ship.

Deck-top attractions

What you'll find on the top decks of Norwegian ships will vary quite a bit depending on the vessel. The line's smaller ships will have at least one or two pools, sunning areas and usually a sports court area — but not all that much else.

The big ships are a different story.

On the line's Breakaway-, Breakaway Plus- and Epic-class ships, you'll find giant waterslides and kiddie splash zones and, in some cases, even more over-the-top attractions such as go-kart tracks and laser tag arenas.

The go-kart tracks (now on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy) are quickly becoming Norwegian's signature can-you-believe-this-is-on-a-ship attraction, and they truly are impressive. The biggest two of them, on Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima, are nearly 1,400 feet long and sprawl over three decks.

Note that this is some serious go-karting. The cars that Norwegian uses can hit speeds up to 32 miles per hour. Three of the speedways, on Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Encore, also feature middle-of-the-track observation areas where your family and friends can cheer you on to victory — and even shoot you with "lasers" that'll give you a boost of power.

The open-air laser tag arenas also are significant venues that are unlike anything you'll find atop the ships of other lines. The one on Norwegian Encore, which is the largest laser tag arena ever put on a ship, is themed around the lost city of Atlantis and spans the back of the vessel.

As is the case with the Galaxy Pavilion attractions mentioned above, the go-kart and laser tag experiences on Norwegian ships don't come cheap. You'll pay $15 per person for an eight-lap romp on the go-karts. Joining a five-minute laser shootout costs $10 per person. In both cases, you can buy a weeklong pass for $199.

The top decks of a few Norwegian ships — mostly the bigger ones — also have a ropes course, a climbing wall or both. Some vessels also have miniature golf courses.

You'll find an exclusive, extra-charge, adults-only VIP sunning area on seven Norwegian ships called Vibe Beach Club. The biggest of these areas is on Norwegian Encore, where Vibe Beach Club is an expansive private lounge with a full-service bar, cabanas and two hot tubs designed to hold up to 270 people — far more than on other ships.

For those with money to burn (pricing on Norwegian Encore recently was $99 per person for a day pass), the Vibe Beach Clubs are lovely, secluded deck-top hideaways. However, there's a downside for everyone else on board the ships that have them, which is that they take away from the deck-top lounge space available to everybody else.

Children's programs

As is typical for big-ship cruise lines, Norwegian has an extensive children's program, with programs and activities for children as young as 6 months through the age of 17.

The heart of the program, called Splash Academy, brings free, supervised activities daily for children ages 3 to 12. The line splits children here up into three age groups: Turtles (ages 3 to 5), Seals (ages 6 to 9) and Dolphins (ages 10 to 12), and they each have their own age-appropriate activities ranging from treasure hunts to video game competitions. On many ships, there are extensive dedicated spaces for the different groups.

While the free programming ends at 10:30 p.m., you can pay extra to leave your kids at Splash Academy past 10:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m., when it's billed as the Late Night Fun Zone.

Norwegian also has rooms on its ships for babies and toddlers ages 6 months to 3 years. Called Guppies, the program offers parents a place to play with their youngest children, with occasional youth staff-led activities and games.

Norwegian also offers dedicated teen zones and programming on ships for children ages 13 to 17. Called Entourage, the teen zone is a place for teens to hang out, dance and play games, and it's supervised by counselors who plan activities and challenges.

What to know before you go

Required documents.

A passport is required for all cruises leaving from a non-U.S. port and all Panama Canal sailings (regardless of departure port). If you're a U.S. citizen, you don't need a passport for most sailings from U.S. ports (including sailings to the Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, the Mexican Riviera and Alaska).

Instead, you can travel with a state-certified birth certificate or other proof of citizenship and a driver's license or other government-issued photo identification. That said, Norwegian strongly recommends that all travelers bring a passport.

Passports must be valid for at least six months after your trip, and the name on your reservation must be exactly as it's printed on your passport or other official proof of nationality.

Norwegian adds an automatic service charge of $20 to $25 per person, per day, to final bills, depending on your cabin category. Depending on the service you receive, you can adjust the amount up or down at the guest services desk before disembarking. In addition, a 20% gratuity is added to the bill at bars, extra-charge specialty restaurants and ship spas.

Norwegian has been rolling out faster Wi-Fi systems across its fleet in recent years, so you can now stream video on ships.

Pricing changes over time, but the fastest "premium" service on Norwegian vessels recently was priced at $39.99 per person per day, if you bought it in advance. Norwegian also offers a less expensive plan that doesn't allow video streaming for $29.99 per person per day if purchased in advance.

This pricing is quite a bit higher than what some other lines, such as Carnival or Princess, charge for Wi-Fi. Princess recently was charging just $14.99 per person per day for a WiFi package.

Carry-on drinks policy

Norwegian allows you to bring bottles of your own wine or Champagne on board, but it will charge you a hefty corkage fee of $15 per bottle for the privilege — even if you plan to drink the bottle in your room. This is a more draconian policy than you'll find at most lines. Most lines allow passengers to bring at least a bottle or two of their own wine on board at no charge.

Smoking policy

On all ships, smoking (including e-cigarette smoking) is only allowed in designated outdoor areas, cigar lounges (for cigar smoking only) and casinos. It's forbidden in cabins and on cabin balconies. Passengers caught smoking in their cabins will be fined $250 per occurrence.

Unlike many cruise vessels, Norwegian ships do not have self-serve launderettes on cabin decks for passenger use. Instead, the line offers extra-charge laundry and dry cleaning services.

Electrical outlets

All cabins on Norwegian vessels have standard North American-style, 110-volt outlets and European-style, 220-volt outlets. Some cabins also have USB ports.

The currency used on all Norwegian itineraries is U.S. dollars. All vessels operate on a cashless system with any onboard purchases you make posting automatically to your onboard account. You'll receive a cruise card you can use to make charges. This same card also lets you into your cabin.

Drinking age

The official drinking age on Norwegian ships is 21. That said, passengers who are 18 to 20 can purchase and consume beer or wine on ships in international waters with permission from parents or legal guardians. The parent or legal guardian must be on board and sign a waiver at guest services. The lower drinking age in international waters does not apply during sailings in Alaska and Hawaii.

Norwegian Cruise Line may be the most laid-back line out there when it comes to dress codes. You can basically wear whatever you want, whenever you want.

The line specifically says that casual wear (think: khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts for men; casual dresses, skirts, shorts, jeans and tops for women) is just fine anytime during the day, at the buffet and in most specialty restaurants.

The line just recommends a step up to "smart casual" outfits in its more formal dining rooms and upscale specialty restaurants. In keeping with Norwegian's laid-backness, this might still mean nothing more than a crisper pair of jeans, or maybe slacks with a collared shirt, for men. Definitely no need for a jacket. For women, slacks, jeans, dresses, skirts and tops will do fine.

Norwegian Cruise Line loyalty program

Norwegian has a point-based frequent cruiser program, Latitudes Rewards, that has seven tiers, ranging from Bronze (requiring 1 point) to Ambassador (700 points).

Members earn points for every night they sail on one of the line's ships. They get an additional point for every night they stay in a concierge room, a suite (not including stays in minisuites, or stays in suites resulting from an upgrade) or a room in The Haven. They also get an additional point for every night booked through a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer.

Hitting the first tier, Bronze, takes one cruise. Reaching the second tier, Silver (20 points), would take at the most three cruises if you're doing seven-night trips.

Lower tiers don't bring all that much in terms of truly valuable benefits. You'll get things like priority check-in and discounted spa treatments performed while ships are in port. However, higher levels of the program start to be enticing.

Platinum (75 points) brings free dinners at two extra-charge restaurants, a discount on an internet package, behind-the-scenes ship tours and concierge service.

The top Ambassador level brings a truly wonderful perk: a one-time complimentary seven-night cruise in a balcony cabin. You can pick almost any sailing except trips around Christmas and the new year.

In contrast to airline frequent-flyer programs, cruise line loyalty programs do not require you to requalify for status every year. So, yes, the perks with lower tiers aren't great. But it's not as difficult as it might at first seem to hit the more rewarding higher tiers in just a few years if you're cruising a lot.

A passenger staying in suites and booking through Latitudes Rewards Insider Offers could get to the Platinum level with just four seven-night cruises.

How much does a Norwegian cruise cost?

Norwegian designs its ships to appeal to a broad mix of people, in part by offering a wide range of cabin types at varying price points. On a typical sailing, you might find an entry-level cabin for around $100 a night while a high-end suite is five to 15 times that amount.

At the time of this story's posting, A The Haven two-bedroom family villa on Norwegian Jewel for a seven-night Alaska cruise in August 2024, for example, was going for $13,978 per person, based on double occupancy. That's more than 13 times the cost of the least expensive inside cabin (which was starting at $1,058 per person, based on double occupancy). Oceanview cabins on the same sailing started at $1,698 per person, based on double occupancy.

Note the "based on double occupancy" caveat in the above paragraph. As is typical for cruise lines, Norwegian charges on a per-person basis, not per room, and it prices most cabins based on two people occupying a room. It does offer some cabins for solo travelers on some ships that are priced based on single occupancy.

In general, Norwegian's newer ships including Norwegian Viva, Norwegian Prima and the Breakaway-class and Breakaway Plus-class vessels will be more expensive than the line's older, smaller ships. However, there are many factors that go into pricing for any given cruise, including the popularity of the specific itinerary, the time of year when the cruise is taking place and changing demand trends.

As you might expect, pricing for all ships will generally be lower during offseason periods such as September and October.

The timing of when you book can also matter. Cruises book up much further in advance than airplanes or hotels, and many cruisers will tell you the best pricing for any given sailing often is available when cruises first go on sale (which can be a good two years before a departure). Booking far in advance will also give you the best chance of getting your preferred cabin type and location on a ship.

Once on board a Norwegian ship, you'll pay extra for most drinks, extra-charge restaurants, spa services, shore excursions, internet service and a few other things — unless you've bought a package for some of these items in advance. Some onboard activities such as go-karting also come with an extra charge. What's included in the fare is your lodging, meals (in non-extra-charge restaurants) and most entertainment.

How to book

If you're sure you know what sort of cabin you want, on which ship, on which itinerary — and about a dozen other things — you can head over to ncl.com to make a booking directly.

That said, given the complexity of booking a cruise (there are a lot of decisions to make during the booking process — trust us) we recommend you use a seasoned travel agent who specializes in cruises.

A good travel agent will quiz you about your particular interests, travel style and preferences, and steer you to the perfect cruise line, ship, itinerary and cabin for you. They can also help you if something goes wrong just before, during or after your voyage.

If you're sure Norwegian is your line, look for a travel agent who specializes in trips with the brand. You want someone who understands all the little quirks that are unique to Norwegian's cabin categories and, preferably, has done ship inspections to see the cabins firsthand.

Whether you use a travel agent or not, make sure to maximize your purchase when paying for the cruise by using a card that offers extra points for travel purchases . This could be the Chase Sapphire Reserve , which offers 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and dining (excluding the annual $300 travel credit), or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card , which brings 2 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on travel and 3 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar spent on dining.

Bottom line

For big-ship lovers, Norwegian pretty much has it all. There's tons of great entertainment on Norwegian's vessels, plenty of venues for eating and drinking, and all sorts of deck-top diversions — at least on the line's newest ships. Throw in the brand's low starting prices, and it's an even more compelling package.

If we have a gripe with the line, it's about the "extra-charge creep" we've been seeing for attractions on Norwegian ships such as go-karts and laser tag in recent years, and the higher a la carte prices spreading across the line's onboard restaurants.

Then again, you get what you pay for, as the saying goes. If you're on a tight budget, there are plenty of included-in-the-fare choices for dining and entertainment. If money is no object, you can follow a different "journey" through the ship, as Norwegian executives like to say, to a far more high-end vacation.

I am set to cruise 2/14/10, this will be our first cruise so I am really excited! Today, when I was talking to a NCL rep., I told them that I still have not gotten our passports and they told me they were not needed. They said all we needed was a certified copy of birth certificate and a picture I.D. Is this true??? TIA!

That is correct...only an original or certified copy of your birth certificate plus a government-issued photo ID such as a drivers license is required for your "closed loop" cruise. However it is better to have a passport as one is required should an emergency or other unforeseen circumstance arise and you need to fly home from a foreign port.

Have you sent the stuff in for your passport? I just got mine renewed in less than 4 weeks, so you have plenty of time left.

Presumably you're doing what is called a "closed-loop cruise" -- leaving from and arriving back to the SAME American port? Then that information is correct -- a certified copy of your birth certificate and a picture ID -- most folks use a driver's license, for you, and anyone else in your party.

If you have a problem, though, and have to leave the ship in a foreign port, it's really hard to make arrangements to fly back to the US. The passport isn't a cruise line thing, but a federal regulation.

It really is best to get your passport. You still have plenty of time; it's been taking around 3 weeks, assuming you have all the information they need, and can be applied for, on line.

What she may know from reading Cruise Critic is that cruise line customer service reps do not exactly have a sterling reputation for answering questions accurately, so she wants to verify she got an accurate answer, which she did.

I called Dept of State and they told me the same thing. That it was a closed loop trip and that if NCL gave me this info then it is correct. I just want to make sure no one has had any problems getting off at foreign ports. I wanted to see if anyone else used their birth certificate....

Keep this in mind....if you show up with a passport and really don't need one, nothing happens.

However...if you show up without one and you really do need one, you'll be missing your vacation.

And I'm strongly advising you to take it because you do, in fact, need it.

My family of 7 traveled from Miami to the Bahamas and back in April of this year. None of us had a passport, just birth certificates and (for those over 16) a gov't issued photo ID (oh, and DW's naturalization papers). We'll be using the same documentation next April, too, although I may get DW a passport because it's cheaper than replacing a Nat. Cert. if anything happened to it.

And that is totally within the US Dept of State's rules for travel.

Miami-Bahamas is covered by the WHTI so yes, in your case, a passport would not be required. (However, if something happened, you would not be able to leave the ship in the Bahamas and fly back).

The OP states in Post #1 that they are sailing on the Spirit on 2/14/10.

That cruise leaves/returns from New Orleans. There are visits to Mexico, Belieze, and Guatemala. The closed-loop exception for cruise ships does not apply to any voyage that stops in either Belieze or Guatemala....therefore, a valid US Passport would be required on this voyage.

Many people just think closed-loop refers to leaving and returning from the same US port. However, it also has the requirement that all ports visited during the voyage be either Canadian, Mexican, or one of a list of 17 Caribbean islands. Thus, the OP's cruise does not fall under the definition of a closed-loop cruise.

Well you didn't bother to mention that before!   You mean to say that you asked BOTH the US Dept of State AND the Cruise Line and both of them gave you the same answer, and you still come to strangers on a message board to ask the question yet again?:confused:     Keep this in mind....if you show up with a passport and really don't need one, nothing happens.   However...if you show up without one and you really do need one, you'll be missing your vacation.     And I'm strongly advising you to take it because you do, in fact, need it.

Well...it turns out that the information published on government Web sites regarding WHTI and closed loop cruises is incomplete, and in fact you are not required to have a passport for a closed loop that includes places like Belize and Honduras.

Of the major cruise lines, only Carnival, as far as I can tell, has actually taken the time to spell that out to its passengers in its FAQs:

TRAVEL DOCUMENTATION - all ports

Proper travel documentation is required at embarkation and throughout the cruise. Even though a guest has completed registration using FUNPASS, it is still the responsibility of the guest to bring all required travel documents. Guest should check with their travel agent and/or government authority to determine the travel documents necessary for each port of call. Any guest without proper documents will not be allowed to board the vessel and no refund of the cruise fare will be issued. Carnival assumes no responsibility for advising guests of immigration requirements.

CRUISE TRAVEL

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) Passport Requirements became effective June 1, 2009, for land and sea borders. While the WHTI requires a valid passport for land and sea travel, a final ruling was issued allowing leniency for “closed-loop” cruises, i.e., sailings that both originate and terminate in the same U.S. port.

Recent guidance received from the Department of Homeland Security indicates the documentary requirements under WHTI for “closed loop” cruises are not limited to cruises that travel only to contiguous territories or adjacent islands. This means U.S. citizens calling on ports in Honduras, Panama, Costa Rica and Belize will also be exempt from the passport requirement.

U.S. citizens taking “closed-loop” cruises are not required to have a passport, but will need proof of citizenship such as an original or certified copy of a birth certificate, a certificate of naturalization, a passport card, an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) as well as a government-issued photo ID. Children are also required to bring proof of citizenship, and if 16 and over, a photo ID is also required. Canadian and Bermudian citizens are required to have a passport for air, land and sea travel, including all Carnival cruises.

Although a passport is not required for U.S. citizens taking “closed loop” cruises, we strongly recommend all guests travel with a passport (valid for at least six months beyond completion of travel). Having a passport will enable guests to fly from the U.S. to a foreign port in the event they miss their scheduled embarkation or to fly back to the U.S. if they need to disembark the ship mid-cruise due to an emergency.

The advice the OP has received from NCL customer service and the State Department is correct.

Sometimes you can't believe everything you read...even if it's published by a government agency. ;)

You forgot to mention they are also calling in Costa Maya. See how info can be misinterpreted.;) The OP was just confirming what the cruise line said, and yes after 17 cruises, I still don't trust any of the cruise lines as far as getting info that is critical.:eek: About 1 in 5 PVP's really know what they are talking about. Before you jump down someone else's throat for no good reason, might I suggest that you go back and reread the posts.

I said they were stopping in Mexico, Belieze and Guatemala. Last time I checked, Costa Maya was in Mexico...the very first place that I mentioned.

Also...the OP wasn't "just confirming what the cruise line said"...the OP had also gotten the same answer from the US Department of State. So they had an answer AND a confirmation...before they came here.

However, you are right not to trust the cruiseline for information. I wouldn't trust what the NCL rep said...nor would I trust what Carnival says. There is PLENTY of documentation on the CBP site that explains all of this.

It's really quite simple...you visit a port that isn't on the list and you need a passport.

For example...

A ship leaves New York, visits Halifax, returns to New York...No passport required.

Same ship leaves New York, visits Reykjavik, returns to New York...Passport required.

What is a Closed Loop Cruise?

A closed loop cruise is one that begins and ends at the same port in the United States. Initially, the definition of closed loop came from the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), but this term has been refined for cruising. Closed loop cruises are defined as U.S. based cruises with itineraries that both originate and terminate in the United States. But these cruises must be returning from contiguous territories or adjacent islands.

  • What are Contiguous Territories? – Countries that share a border with the United States are considered contiguous territories, such as Canada and Mexico. For example, an Alaska cruise that sails roundtrip out of Seattle would not require passengers to present a passport, because it visits only Alaska and Canada (a contiguous territory). The same rule applies for a Mexican Riviera cruise that departs from Los Angeles and finishes in Los Angeles.
  • Which are Considered Adjacent Islands? – Most of the Caribbean islands are considered adjacent by definition. A more comprehensive list can be found on the U.S. Customs and Border Protection website. Basically, a Caribbean cruise that originates and terminates in the same U.S. port, such as Miami, is not required to present a passport if the cruise is returning from any of these adjacent islands.

Cruises Where a Passport is Required

  • A passport or other approved document is required for cruises which begin in one U.S. port and return to a different U.S. port. For example, if a cruise starts in Seattle and ends in Seward, Alaska, a passport is required.
  • A passport is required for cruises that begin or end in a foreign port. For example, if an Alaska cruise begins or ends in Vancouver, a passport is required.
  • A passport is required for all cruises where an international flight needs to be taken since all international air travel requires a passport.
  • A passport is also required if the cruise itinerary visits ports that are not contiguous territories such as Costa Rica, Belize or Panama (neither of these share a border with the U.S.). This rule also applies even when the port of embarkation and disembarkation are the same U.S. port, in the case of some Panama Canal cruises.

Cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean advise that guests who do not possess the proper documentation may be prevented from boarding their flight or ship or by entering a country, and may be subject to fines. Most cruise lines will not give refunds to individuals who fail to bring proper ID.

And if that isn't enough, what about common sense? If you show up with a passport that isn't needed...no harm, no foul. If you show up without a passport when it is required....you miss your vacation. Which of these people do YOU want to be?

She will be okay for this cruise with a certified birth certificate and drivers license photo, but when you can afford a passport please get one. Congress may have softened the passport blow for many of us, but its only a matter of time before Homeland Security gets its way. Its my opinion we are only one terrorist incident away. Cruise lines have been targeted before. Recall the Achille Lauro? Notice how overnight we are limited to only one carry-on bag with the airlines... A purse and/or a laptop are now considered carry-ons with the airlines...

Assuming that you are cursing the Caribbean and leaving from and returning to the same port that is accurate. If you have applied for your passports already, don't worry unless their is something wrong with your application you will have them before you leave anyway.

General Aqua Park, Water Slide, and Dry Slide Safety Rules:

  • No lifeguard on duty.
  • No running, jumping, or diving are permitted in the water slide or aqua park areas.
  • No beverages, food or glass are permitted.
  • Children in nappies or who are not toilet trained are not allowed on water slides or in the aqua park.
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Guests must abide by all rules posted on signs in the water slide and aqua park areas.
  • Swimwear or dry wear with exposed zippers, buckles, rivets, or metal ornamentation are not permitted on any slides.

General Speedway Safety Rules:

  • Flat, fully closed footwear required (no flip flops, Crocs, or heels).
  • Riders must always wear a helmet.
  • Loose clothing is not allowed.
  • No age minimum, guests must only adhere to height requirements.
  • Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back and hidden inside helmet.

No, Norwegian doesn't offer babysitting but instead offers Group Sitting Services for children ages 3 -12 years old every night from 10:30pm - 1:30am (Late Night Fun Zone) and on port days whilst the ship is docked.

On Port Days , a minimal fee is charged only during scheduled meal time per the activity booklet.

Nightly at Late Night Fun Zone, there is an hourly fee of $6.00 USD per hour, per child and $4.00 USD per hour, per child for each additional sibling.

Parents are encouraged to sign up in advance for both services. If no children are signed up or dropped off by 11:30 pm for the nightly service, the youth centre will close for the evening. We enrol all guests who have cruised with us and who are at least 18 years of age in our Latitudes Rewards programme within 48 hours after your cruise is completed. No action is required on your part and your membership and rewards in this exclusive programme are automatic. Cruises taken as a minor will be credited to the guest on their first cruise taken after they turn 18 years of age.

If your back to back sailing was booked as two different reservations, and you graduate a tier after your first cruise, you will receive the benefits of your new tier on your second cruise. If your sailing was booked as one reservation, you will not receive the new tier benefits on your current cruise. You will receive benefits for your new tier on your next cruise.

No. Chartered cruises and cruises taken at a reduced fare i.e. travel agent rates, employee rates, vendor rates and cruises taken via a cruise certificate (for example, cruise winners and Bingo winners), do not receive Latitudes Rewards points.

As with all programmes, specific parameters are established with the policies/procedures to be followed for the credit of programme points. Our promotions are always driven by a booking window and are available for new reservations only. This means that for a reservation to qualify for a promotion, it needs to be made within a certain time frame. For an existing reservation to qualify for a new offer/promotion, it has to be cancelled and re-booked which then changes the booking date on the reservation. If this change is done within 9 months prior to sailing, the reservation is then disqualified from receiving the early booking points. The booked date of your new reservation will be used to determine if you booked 9 months in advance and are eligible for the early booking points.

Rewards points are applied to your account after you return from your cruise. Points will be applied within 48 hours after you have completed a sailing.

You will earn one point per cruise night and an additional point per night if you book in a Suite* or in The Haven™, or if you book with a Latitudes Rewards Insider Offer.

Liquor & Beverage Policy

On itineraries that include ports of call in the U.S., Canada or China, guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol. Within the Open Bar (either chosen as part of Free at Sea or purchased separately) alcoholic beverages are only included for guests 21 years of age and older in these destinations. On all other cruises this regulation applies to guests aged 18 years and above with the exception of guests who are U.S., Canadian and Chinese nationals. On cruises that include ports of call in the U.S., Canada or China and with the exception of Alaska and Hawai`i itineraries, NCL permits young adults between 18 and 20 years of age to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only whilst on board and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk on embarkation.

China/Asia: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is NOT permitted for guests 18 to 20 whilst in China/ Asia waters.

Australia/New Zealand: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to serve or sell only beer and wine whilst in international waters.

All guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on board our ships with the exception of champagne and wine. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports of call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase(s) and on the final night of the cruise it will be available for pickup in a designated area. Please note that for wine and champagne brought on board by you, a corkage fee will apply if consumed on board.

NCL encourages the responsible use of alcohol and accordingly reserves the right to permanently or temporarily revoke the drinking privileges of any guest who violates NCL's Guest Code of Conduct or who is deemed a danger to himself, herself or others by vessel management. Continued abuse of alcohol whilst sailing and/or violation of NCL's alcohol policy may result in immediate disembarkation.

Effective for sailings July 15, 2016 and beyond, guests are prohibited from bringing any beverages -- including liquor, beer and non-alcoholic drinks such as water, soda and juices -- on board either as carry-on or checked luggage, with the exception of purified or distilled water in factory-sealed containers for use in conjunction with medical devices or for the reconstitution of infant formula; and fully sealed and/or corked wine bottles for personal consumption onboard that is subject to screening and a corkage fee (for guests 21 years of age or older). Open beverages of any kind must be consumed or discarded at the security check-point, on embarkation day and at any port of call. This revised policy brings the company in line with other best practise travel security protocols and reduces the need for individual time consuming screening and package inspection of large volumes of beverages.

Why the change in policy? The inspection of large volumes of beverages has an impact on the embarkation process and security resources. As one example, guests who attempt to smuggle alcoholic beverages onboard often try to do so in beverage containers. This means all beverages must be personally screened, taking both time and dedicated personnel. This modified policy will now bring us in line with other travel industry procedures for transporting beverages and allow security personnel to focus on other screening efforts and not individually inspecting all beverages being brought onboard. What if I purchase a beverage in a port of call? Guests will not be permitted to bring any beverages onboard the ship in ports of call and any locally-purchased beverages will be disposed of prior to embarkation. No open containers of beverages, including water, will be allowed onboard during a port of call. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports-of-call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase and either on the final night of the cruise or the morning of debarkation it will be available for pick up in a designated area. What happens if I bring a case of water to the ship? Guests who bring beverages to embarkation will be directed to return the items to their vehicle. If the guest does not have a vehicle onsite, the items will be disposed of. If I need to bring water or milk onboard for a medical reason or infant, what’s the process? Guests who have special needs, medical requirements, or families with infants who require water for formula or milk, should contact the access desk at [email protected] to verify if an exception can be made for their beverage and to obtain pre-approval to provide to security at embarkation. Is the water onboard safe to drink? All of our ships produce water in accordance with the guidelines and requirements as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Public Health Service, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Centre for Environmental Health. Can I still bring wine on board? Yes, guests may bring sealed bottles of wine on board for personal consumption. They will be checked prior to embarkation and a corkage fee applied at that time of $15.00 USD for a 750 ml Bottle or $30.00 USD for a 1,500 ml Magnum bottle. Box wines are not allowed on board. Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee. Why can I bring wine but not other beverages? As very few guests bring wine onboard, the team is able to easily and quickly screen these items.

Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board. When bottles are brought on board and served or consumed in any restaurant, public room area or in their stateroom, a corkage fee will be charged according to bottle sizes noted below.

1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 USD

Wine or champagne sent directly to the ship by travel agents, friends, family, etc. or from another retail source, are subject to the same fees. Box wines are not allowed on board.

Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee.

Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol whilst in US sailings.

Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to consume only beer and wine whilst vessels is in international waters. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. Europe sailing permits young adults 18 to 20 to purchase and personally consume alcohol whilst onboard.

Money Matters

We are confident that you will enjoy your Freestyle Cruising experience and that our entire crew will provide you with the standard of service for which we are known. A discretionary service charge will be automatically added per guest per day (for guests three years and older) to your shipboard account for all staterooms: US$ 20 per guest per day (for guests 3 years and older) for Studios, Inside, Oceanview and Balcony Staterooms as well as Club Balcony Suites. For Suites and The Haven Suites, the service charge will be US$ 25 per guest per day (for guests 3 years and older). This charge will be shared amongst those staff members, including the restaurant staff, stateroom stewards and other behind-the scenes staff who provide services that enhance your overall cruise experience.

These service charges can be paid in advance of your cruise. If you have any concerns about the service you receive during your cruise, please let our onboard Guest Services Desk staff know right away, so we can address any issues in a timely manner. In the unlikely event that we can't resolve your issue, you can have the service charge adjusted on board. Where your service charge has been pre-paid before departure, refunds are not available on board and you must apply for a refund, if applicable, after you return home by writing to our Guest Relations department.

Certain staff positions (e.g., concierge, butler, youth programme staff and beverage service) provide service on an individual basis to only some guests and do not benefit from the overall service charge. We encourage those guests to acknowledge good service from these staff members with appropriate gratuities.

Additionally, there is a 20% gratuity and spa service charge added for all spa and salon services, as well as a 20% gratuity and beverage service charge added for all beverage purchases and a 20% gratuity and speciality service charge added to all speciality restaurant dining and entertainment based dining (does not apply to Free at Sea dining and drinks packages).

The currency used on board our ships is the U.S. dollar. We've made paying for on-board expenses very easy. When you check in you open a shipboard account by registering a major credit card such as VISA®, MasterCard® or American Express® . If you prefer to pay by cash or traveller's cheques, a suggested deposit for a 7-night cruise is US dollar 300 per person, US dollar 150 per person for cruises up to 6 nights or US dollar 450 per person for cruises of 8 nights and more at check-in (subject to change). Then, you simply sign for your personal expenses as you go and they will be charged to your account.

Important : When your credit card is entered to activate your on-board account, an initial approval is obtained from the bank. Please be advised that some banks may hold the pre-authorisation for up to 30 days. Throughout the voyage incremental holds will be obtained based on your on-board expenditure. This will reduce the amount of available credit on the credit card or restrict the availability of cash in your bank account.

Travellers cheques and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit. Proper ID is required when cashing travellers cheques. We recommend you carry a small amount of local currency when visiting foreign ports, although credit cards are commonly accepted in shops and restaurants.

Guests sailing to Hawaii will be charged an additional 4.275% Pre Paid Service Charge GET Tax.

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced an enhanced room service menu. The new menu offers an expanded selection for breakfast, in addition to a wider variety of options available 24 hours. Individual items on the menu remain available on a complimentary basis and a convenience charge of up to $9.95 USD will be added to each order placed. There is a $4.95 Room Service Breakfast fee is fleetwide for all breakfast room service orders Orders placed by guests sailing in the Haven & Suites staterooms are not subject to the service fee*. A 20% gratuity and beverage service charge will be added for non-complimentary beverages and special occasion items.

For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to your Onboard account. Sign up when you check in, establishing your method of payment with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB Card, Diner's Club. You may also use your debit card however please be advised that we obtain pre-authorisation, as we do for all Credit Cards, and some banks hold these funds for up to 30 days. The maximum initial pre-authorisation amount for all credit and debit cards is $300. Cash can also be used as a method of payment to settle your account with an initial deposit paid in advance.

  • Norwegian does not recommend the use of a debit card as payment for your onboard folio.
  • Please be advised that multiple holds will be placed on your debit card account based on your onboard purchases.
  • After settling your onboard folio, these debit card holds may remain on your account up to 30 days after the cruise ends.
  • To avoid overdraft charges from your bank, please make sure that you have enough available funds in your account during this hold period.
  • Norwegian will not be responsible for overdraft charges resulting from holds placed on Debit Card accounts.

Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess.

  • Pier - a structure built out over the water and supported by pillars or piles: used as a landing place.
  • Port - the left-hand side of a ship as one faces forward: opposed to starboard. Port - so named because the side toward the port (dock), since the steering oar (see starboard) prevented docking to the right.
  • Port of Call - regular stopover(s) on a cruise itinerary.
  • Purser - a ship's officer in charge of accounts, freight, tickets, etc., esp. on a passenger vessel. Important to you - a Purser takes responsibility for all money, transactions.
  • Port - the left hand side of the ship whilst facing forward (bow). Easy to remember since "port" and "left" each have four letters.
  • Ship - You always cruise on a "ship", never a "boat"
  • Spa Suite - A luxurious suite only found aboard Norwegian Epic that features an ocean view whirlpool tub, balcony, complimentary, nearby access to the Thermal Suites at Mandara Spa and keycard access to the private Courtyard area
  • Starboard - the right side of the ship whilst facing forward (bow).
  • Stateroom - your cabin or berth
  • Stern - the very back of the ship
  • Studios - Norwegian Epic's private keycard access complex comprised of staterooms designed and priced for the solo traveller. Also includes access to the private Studio Lounge.
  • Studio Lounge - A private lounge aboard Norwegian Epic reserved exclusively for Studio guests. This is a place to relax, watch TV, have a drink and meet fellow Studio guests.
  • Tender - a boat for carrying passengers to or from a ship close to shore.
  • Windward - on the side of the ship from which the wind blows; toward the wind
  • No running, jumping or diving are permitted in the pool area
  • Showers are required prior to use and recommended after use.
  • According to United States Public Health (U.S.P.H.) regulations, no nappies of any kind are permitted in the swimming pools or jacuzzis, including those marketed as "swimmers".
  • Guests must follow the rules posted on all signs in the pool or hot tub/whirlpool area.
  • Children under 16 require adult supervision at all times whilst using the hot tub.

Do Norwegian ships have adult only pools?

How do I book my Dining, Entertainment and Spa activities prior to sailing?

Onboard activities can be booked online at ncl.com/myncl; by calling 00800 0310 21 21 (for Shore Excursions) and 00800 0310 21 21 for Spa (Norwegian Epic only), Dining and Entertainment, or by contacting your travel professional.

Please note: Speciality dining can be pre-booked online for parties of up to eight guests. If you'd like to pre-book speciality dining for larger parties, please call us at 00800 0310 21 21 for assistance. Our reservation agents will also be able to assist you if you would like to pre-book speciality dining for your group using more than one credit card.

Who will be asked to purchase cruise activities with a credit card?

Ticketed passengers who (1) purchased the cruise in US dollars, CAN dollars, GBP or Euro's, and (2) do not have a Shore Excursion, Dining or Entertainment reservation on record prior to June 29, 2011. Guests who do not meet all of these criteria will be able to pre-book activities, but will not be asked for payment at the time of booking.

Will my charges to my credit card be refunded if I cancel my bookings prior to sailing?

Cancellations made up to 24 hours prior to sailing will be refunded in full to the credit card on which the purchase was made. To cancel prepaid reservations prior to sailing, please call 866-896-3152 (for Shore Excursions) and 00800 0310 21 21 (for Dining, Entertainment and Spa). Cancellations made after that point will be refunded as an onboard credit. What is the cancellation process once I’m on board?

Shore Excursions: Guests that cancel on board more than 48 hours prior to the tour will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. Tours cancelled by guests less than 48 hours prior to arrival in the port where the tour is scheduled are non-refundable. Please note that certain tours, such as overland tours, customised tours and tours with theatre performances or special events may be subject to different cancellation fees. To make a cancellation on board or for additional details, please visit the Shore Excursion Desk.

Dining/Entertainment: Guests that cancel on board more than 24 hours prior to the booked activity will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. If a cancellation is made less than 24 hours prior to the activity, no refund will be issued. To make a cancellation on board, please visit the Guest Services Desk.

Spa: Guests that cancel on board more than 24 hours prior to the booked activity will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. Failure to do so may result in a cancellation charge up to 50% of the treatment price being assessed to your onboard account. Will there be any cancellation fees if I cancel my onboard activity?

How do I make Restaurant Reservations on board?

Reservations may be made by phone, in person at the designated Restaurant Reservations Desk, or at any speciality restaurant host desk during dinner service.

To ensure that our guests receive our best service, we can only hold your dinner reservation for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the unclaimed reservation will be released. For dinner reservations made on board, the full cover price per guest will be charged to the guest's account. For pre-paid reservations, no refund will be issued.

The combination of travel services offered to you is a package within the meaning of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

Therefore, you will benefit from all EU rights applying to packages. NCL (Bahamas) Ltd which trades as Norwegian Cruise Line will be fully responsible for the proper performance of the package as a whole.

Additionally, as required by law, NCL (Bahamas) Ltd has protection in place to refund your payments and, where transport is included in the package, to ensure your repatriation in the event that it becomes insolvent.

Guests booked on a full-ship charter to sail aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship are not eligible for this offer. Any full-ship charter guests during this period should contact their charter company or programme operator directly with any questions.

FCCs from either suspended sailings or Peace of Mind can’t be converted into another currency.

Absolutely. However, for FCCs associated with the Peace of Mind policy, the FCC must be first generated and attached to the guest profile before it can be added to a reservation. It can then be applied to any new or existing reservation or group booking.

Yes. The policy applies to existing and active bookings or sailings with embarkation dates through and including May 31, 2022. The deadline to use Peace of Mind is January 31, 2022.

Applicable refunds will be returned to the original form of payment sixty (60) days after the request for the refund has been made. Policies for bookings made through Tour Operators or Wholesalers may vary, so please contact your Travel Partner for full details.

Cruise Casual: the Freedom of Freestyle Cruising

Dress cruise casual anytime during the day, in the buffet and in most speciality restaurants. For women, it includes summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops. Khakis, jeans, shorts and casual shirts are fine for men. Swimwear is acceptable at the buffet and outdoor restaurant, but a shirt or a cover-up and footwear are required.

At NCL, we offer two simple price models: our base fare that is available in all stateroom categories and already includes a variety of services as your accommodation, meals in the main dining rooms, snack- and buffet restaurants, all entertainment unless part of a dining entertainment production aboard the ship, numerous activities on board, the use of many onboard facilities as well as all government fees and port taxes. In addition, guests travelling in Studios, Inside, Oceanview and Balcony Staterooms as well as Mini-Suites can upgrade their cruise with our Free at Sea offer (upcharge between € 79 and € 249 depending on the length of the cruise). The currency used on board our ships is US dollar. We've made paying for on-board expenses very easy. When you check in you open a shipboard account by registering a major credit card - VISA®, MasterCard® or American Express®. Please be advised that an initial as well as incremental holds throughout the voyage will be placed on your card account based on your on-board purchases. This will reduce the amount of available credit on the card. After settling your on-board folio, these card holds may remain on your account for up to 30 days after the cruise ends.

Authorisation-hold releases are solely within the discretion of your lending institution. If you prefer to pay by cash or traveller's cheques, a suggested deposit for a 7-day cruise is US dollar 300 per person, US dollar 150 per person for cruises up to 6 days or US dollar 450 per person for cruises of 8 days and more at check-in (subject to change). Then, you simply sign for your personal expenses as you go and they will be charged to your account.

Personal Cheques, debit cards or currencies other than the US dollar are not accepted on board, Any excess deposit will be refunded at the end of the cruise in US dollar. Please also keep in mind that it's always worth having a small amount of local currency for immediate expenses on arrival at your destination and for any purchases you make at your ports of call. Traveller's cheques and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit.

In order to comply with government regulations covering departure manifests, be sure to register online through our website ( www.ncl.eu ) after you have paid in full and before you leave on your Norwegian Cruise Line holiday. We strongly recommend that guests complete their Online Check-In at least one day before sailing, as otherwise they may be subject to an extended check-in procedure at the cruise terminal or may even be denied boarding.

We welcome guests with special needs. The information you are provided with about your holiday (which may be on our website, in our brochures or elsewhere) before you make your booking will include a general indication of the suitability of the holiday for someone with reduced mobility. However, reduced mobility of course means different things to different individuals as we fully appreciate that individual capabilities, restrictions and requirements will vary considerably. If you suffer from reduced mobility or any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday, please give us full details before booking so that we can provide you with precise information as to the suitability of the holiday taking into account your specific needs. Guests who have significant mobility impairments should travel with someone who will take responsibility for any assistance needed during the cruise and in the event of an emergency. Any assistance provided by Norwegian Cruise Line, its team members or service providers does not form part of the contracted services unless agreed differently in writing or where required by legal regulations (for example, in accordance with EU regulation 1107/2006 dated 5 July 2006 on the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air and EU regulation 1177/2010 dated 24 November 2010 concerning the rights of passengers when travelling by sea). Any special requirements which we have accepted will be specifically confirmed as accepted on your confirmation invoice. Unless and until specifically confirmed as accepted, all special requests and requirements are subject to availability and do not form part of the contracted services.

We have a limited number of staterooms per ship that are wheelchair accessible with grab rails in the bathrooms, lower sinks and toilets, shower seats, raised beds, adjustable hanging rods in wardrobes, tilting mirrors and extra wide doors for easy access.

If you do use a wheelchair, you must bring your own and it must be collapsible. If you do not wish to bring your own wheelchair on board, please contact our U.S.-based supplier Scooteround on 001 (888) 441 7575 to arrange delivery of one to the ship. All wheelchairs and scooters must be stored in your stateroom; they cannot be left in the hallway or any other public area. To ensure the safety of our guests and crew, wheelchairs may not be used to transfer from the ship to a tender. Guests in wheelchairs may consequently not be able to participate in certain activities or shore excursions in tender ports. Norwegian Cruise Line can only accept certain types of wheelchairs on board. Please see www.ncl.eu/about/accessible-cruising for further information. All guests who require medical equipment to be brought on board must advise Norwegian Cruise Line before sailing. Failure to do so may result in equipment not being cleared before departure.

For hearing-/ vision-impaired guests, we have a limited number of staterooms with vibrating alarm clocks and a flashing light system alerting guests to fire alarms. For the vision-impaired, we allow registered guide dogs on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships (airline and international quarantine restrictions may apply and should be checked before booking your cruise).

Guests who need oxygen or require oxygen therapy are welcome on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships; however, you must supply your own oxygen. U.S.-based Special Needs at Sea is the only company allowed to deliver and supply oxygen to Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Let us know at the time of booking that you'll be bringing oxygen on board, then contact Special Needs at Sea at 001 954 585 0575 to arrange delivery to the ship.

Any physical challenge or medical condition that requires special treatment or attention must be reported to Norwegian Cruise Line at the time of booking. For certain conditions we ask for medical declaration and liability forms. Due to unpredictable circumstances at sea, Norwegian Cruise Line must reserve the right to refuse or revoke passage to anyone who, based upon objective standards, is in a physical or mental condition that jeopardises the safe operation of the vessel, who poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others or who may require care beyond that which Norwegian Cruise Line can provide.

For guests with diabetes, refrigerators suitable for storing insulin are available in all staterooms except Studios (category T1 and T8).

If you are on a low calorie diet, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus feature low calorie, haute cuisine dishes. Sugar-free and fat-free desserts are also available. Gluten-free, lactose-free, sodium-free, Kosher and dairy-free diets can also be catered for and must be requested at least two months before your cruise. For further information see www.ncl.eu .

All requirements stated below apply at the time of embarkation. Infants sailing on board a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel must be at least six months of age. However, for voyages that have three or more consecutive days at sea, the infant must be at least 12 months old.

When on board, a minor is defined as an individual under 18 years of age at the time of embarkation. A young adult is defined as an individual between the ages of 18 and 20. Please note that this does not relate to child pricing, where the age is 2-17 years old.

Company policy states that on itineraries that include a port in the United States of America, Canada or China guests under 21 years of age must be accompanied in the same, connecting, or side by side stateroom by a guest who is 21 years of age or older at the time of embarkation (staterooms opposite of each other are not applicable under this policy). For all other cruises this regulation applies to all guests under 18 years of age with the exception of guests who are citizens of the United States of America, Canada or China. For guests under the age of 18 travelling with an accompanying adult, who is not the minor’s parent or legal guardian, a Parent/Guardian Release Form (available here: www.ncl.eu/ParentGuardianForm ) that authorises the minor’s travel and further authorises medical treatment in case of an emergency must be given to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier during check-in. Failure to present the completed form at embarkation may result in boarding being denied, with no refund provided.

On cruises that include a Canadian port, guests under 18 travelling with a single parent have to provide a letter of approval (preferably notarised) from the parent not travelling. Note: Two people under the age of 21 may travel together in the same stateroom if they are a married couple and provide proof of marriage to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier before embarkation.

Children under 16 years of age are not allowed to enter the fitness centre. The minimum age for use of the Casino and the Thermal Spa (sauna, steam room, hot tubs) is 18. Some bars and lounges on board Norwegian Epic and Breakaway (Plus)-Class ships, for example Spice H2O, are adult only (18 and over). Lifeguards monitor the family pools during scheduled pool hours. However it is strongly recommended that all children under 12 have adult supervision at all times. The safety of all children (up to the age of 18) is the responsibility of their parent(s) or other accompanying adult(s) irrespective of whether a lifeguard is on duty.

For safety reasons children must not be left unattended on board when their parents or other accompanying adults go ashore.

Norwegian Cruise Line's liability is limited by international conventions and EU regulations, its terms and conditions and conditions of carriage. We therefore recommend purchasing appropriate travel, health and luggage insurance before your cruise.

Guests are responsible for ensuring they fulfil all passport and visa requirements for all countries visited during the cruise and when travelling to and from the port of embarkation/disembarkation. EU citizens need a full e-passport issued by an EU member state (also applicable for children of any age). A passport is also required for all European sailings (exception: citizens of Schengen States cruising on itineraries that do not leave EU territory).

The US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) enables eligible citizens and nationals of designated countries to travel to the US for tourism amd business stays of 90 days or less without first obtaining a visa. Travellers who do not qualify for the VWP must obtain a visa to travel to the United States. Should you need to obtain a visa, please be sure to apply for a multiple entry visa.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) is effective for citizens and eligible nationals of VWP countries to apply for advance authorisation to travel to the United States under the VWP. ESTA stipulates that all Visa Waiver Programme travellers are required to obtain via the internet ( https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov ) an electronic travel authorisation prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. under the VWP. Countries currently enroled in the VWP include the UK, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden, amongst others but not all EU member states. ESTA authorisations are valid for multiple entries within two years (or less if the passport expires during this period). Please note that U.S. authorities will charge a fee of US$ 21 per person (status: May 2019) for travel authorisation. This fee has to be paid by credit card during the application process. Additional information regarding the VWP and ESTA is available at www.cbp.gov/esta . For U.S.-bound Atlantic Crossings, we strongly advise guests to print out their ESTA before travelling, as this is a requirement at check-in before you can board the ship.

All travellers (including children) must have an e-passport to use the Visa Waiver Programme. An e-Passport, denoted by the respective symbol, is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. E-Passports are issued by the proper passport issuing authority and must meet international standards for securing and storing information corresponding to the passport and bearer. Please be aware that immigration and visa regulations are subject to change. For current information, please visit https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas.html or check with your travel agent and the respective embassies or consulates. The information above refers to the status at the time of printing. It is assumed that the traveller is a citizen of a Visa Waiver country. For all citizens of non-Visa Waiver countries, you will have to check individual treaties between your state and the U.S. Government and whether you have to apply for a special tourist visa with the U.S. embassy of your home state. Please consider that the application for a visa could take up to three months. Similarly to the U.S. VWP, since October 15, 2016, Canada requires visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or via Canada to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) prior to travel for a fee of CAD 7 per person. The ETA is valid for multiple entries within five years (or less if the passport expires during this period). For information please visit www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit .

All travellers who are not citizens of a VWP country please check your individual passport and immigration / visa requirements with your travel agent and the respective embassies or consulates. Personal circumstances cannot be considered. We will try within our means to inform you of the applicable requirements. During most cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line personnel will need to retain your passport. You therefore have to carry a second government-issued photo ID with you at all times. It is the sole responsibility of the guest to provide all necessary documentation. Guests are not entitled to a refund if entry into any foreign territory or boarding is denied by immigration officials or Norwegian Cruise Line personnel for lack of proper documents.

The American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented the Secure Flight Programme for international air traffic. This programme intends to reduce the instances of misidentification of the travel authorised passengers to the U.S. as well as to enhance the security of air travel. Within this programme, all airlines commit to transmit the following Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) from travellers which are arriving in and/or departing from the U.S. to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security: Full name as per valid government-issued passport (including middle name, initials), date of birth, gender and Redress Number (if applicable). Therefore we ask all guests to check their confirmation carefully. In case of any incorrect data appearing on the confirmation, please contact our reservations department. If there is no client data available at the time of booking, Norwegian Cruise Line will use the data from the Online Check-In. For further information on the Secure Flight Programme please visit http://www.tsa.gov/secureflight . Providing the Secure Flight Data does not release you from the obligation to apply for the advanced authorisation to travel to the U.S. under the ESTA programme programme or to obtain a visa if the VWP does not apply to your visit.

A visa is required for some of our destinations in Asia, Australia & New Zealand visited on your cruise. The relevant information can be found here: CIBTvisas ( http://cibtvisas.de/leisure-eu-splash ). The required visas can be requested via the visa and passport service provider CIBTvisas ( http://cibtvisas.de/leisure-eu-splash ). If you would like to explore St. Petersburg individually, you can also request the corresponding visa via CIBTvisas. Additionally, all cruise guests sailing from a U.S. port to Cuba require a Cuban visa which needs to be obtained prior to your cruise. Please ask at time of booking or contact CIBTvisas. In all cases a fee applies. For cruises to Cuba, guests also need to document that they fulfil the requirements concerning cultural exchanges by completing a self-certification form which must be received by Norwegian Cruise Line at least 3 days prior to the cruise departure. Guests will not be able to board the vessel without having first completed the certification form. Guests are responsible for ensuring they are in possession of all relevant documentation and visas for the entire cruise itinerary including all ports of call.

Customs allowances may vary depending on the itinerary. Please check on board, with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs or with the respective customs authorities for the most up-to-date information.

A Guarantee stateroom (GTY) is one where there is no stateroom number assigned at the time of booking. A stateroom may be assigned any time after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing. A Guarantee stateroom guarantees you a stateroom in the category you have paid for (Inside, Oceanview etc.). It does not guarantee deck, location or specific bed arrangements. Once the stateroom has been assigned, there will be no changes.

Arrival at the Cruise Terminal: For your comfort and convenience, we recommend that guests who have not completed their Online Check-In arrive at the cruise terminal no later than two (2) hours prior to the scheduled embarkation time printed on your cruise documents. Guests who have completed their Online Check-In should arrive at the terminal no later than one (1) hour prior to the scheduled embarkation time printed on your cruise documents. We STRONGLY recommend guests complete their Online Check-In at least four (4) days prior to sailing.

Final Boarding Time: In order to facilitate the embarkation process, the processing of your eDocs, and to comply with new government regulations governing departure manifest, all guests are required to complete check-in at the cruise terminal and be onboard the ship no later than one hour prior to the departure time noted on their cruise documents or they will not be permitted to sail . Please note that guests who have not filled out their Online Check-In must arrive at the port two (2) hours prior to sailing.

Joining or debarking the ship at any time outside of the published embark/debark port is not permitted for the following reasons:

  • Itineraries are subject to change without notice.
  • Violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), if applicable.

Approval to embark or disembark mid-cruise may be allowed only in cases of emergencies. Please note that embarking or disembarking mid-cruise may result in a violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), resulting in a fine starting at $798 per person.

Boarding Time in Ports of Call: In all ports of call, it is also the guest's responsibility to be back onboard the ship no later than one (1) hour prior to the ship's scheduled departure time. Please be aware that shipboard time may differ from the port of call and it is the guest's responsibility to follow the shipboard time. In the event a guest misses the ship, it will be the guest's responsibility to pay all expenses incurred to rejoin the ship.

Absolutely. However, for FCCs associated with these affected cruises, the FCC must be first generated and attached to the guest profile. Once the FCC is added to the guest profile, FCCs can then be applied to any existing booking or newly created booking.

Whilst we understand this change may cause some out of pocket and unexpected expenses for affected guests, they will not be reimbursed for those costs. We recommend that guests who purchased travel protection or independent travel insurance submit a claim through their carrier.

No, guests will receive the full value of their winning bid within the FCC and can apply that towards the sailing and category of their choice. Guests can then participate in a new bid once invited to bid for the newly selected sailing.

The original FCC amount will be returned to the guests' profile. If an affected booking has a previously applied FCC (as a result of a previous suspended sailing), the enhanced value future cruise credit will not be applicable. Bookings under this circumstance are not eligible for a cash refund and will receive the original value of the FCC back to the guests' profile.

Note FCCs have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash. If a guest opts to retain the FCC provided, the guest hereby agrees to all of NCL’s terms and conditions associated with the FCC, which can also be found on www.ncl.com/cruise-faq .

To offer our guests even more flexibility for future holiday planning, some under some circumstances who hold outstanding Future Cruise Credits (FCC) may submit a request to convert their FCC to a monetary refund. Guests who elect to request their FCC to a monetary refund will receive the original cruise fare paid, back to their original form of payment and forfeit any bonus FCCs attached to their Latitudes profile. CruiseNext deposits applied to a reservation cancelled under our Peace of Mind policy will not be reissued. The value will be included in the POM-NRD credit that was issued.

The Cruise Norwegian mobile app is not intended for children under the age of 13. However, permission by a parent or guardian in the same stateroom can be granted through their mobile app. To grant permission, a parent must log into the app with their information, open the main menu and navigate to the Preference Centre, select the CHILD ACCESS menu option, and follow the instructions.

When the ship has been cleared, you will proceed through customs and immigration and continue with your independent arrangements. Please ensure that you have arranged for an adequate flight time considering customs and immigration procedures (approx. 2 hours) and the transfer time to the airport. In some ports you can take advantage of our "Easy Walk-Off". This means you can leave the ship as soon as it is cleared by local authorities, carrying all your luggage off the vessel.

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014 . On Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 USD cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

On all other ships, active Casino players may smoke cigarettes, electronic cigarettes and vapor smoking devices in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigar and pipe smoking is not permitted in the Casino.

Staterooms : Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipe, electronic cigarettes and vapor devices in their staterooms or on their balconies. The Haven : On ships with The Haven complex, smoking is not permitted in The Haven courtyard area, but is permitted in The Haven Sun Deck area (forward) on Breakaway Class and Breakaway Plus Class.

On Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Epic, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted on deck 15 mid-ship, port side (limited area) and Spice H 2 O, starboard side.

On Norwegian Escape, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted on deck 16 mid-ship, port side (limited area) and Spice H 2 O, starboard side.

On Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Joy, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted at Spice H 2 O, starboard side.

On Norwegian Encore, cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted in the Smoking Room on Deck 8, portside.

On Jewel and Star Class ships and Norwegian Spirit:

The designated smoking areas for cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted on deck 13 forward port side.

On Norwegian Sky and Norwegian Sun:

The designated smoking areas for cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars, pipe smoking and vapor smoking devices are permitted on deck 12 forward by the entire bar. During inclement weather, deck 11 forward port side by the towel station is the temporary alternative location.

On Pride of America :

The designated smoking area for cigarettes, cigars, pipe, electronic cigarettes and vapor smoking devices are permitted at Waikiki bar on deck 13 aft.

Youth Programmes

Only on port days, depending on the arrival of the ship into port, Port Day Meals are offered and may include a combination of breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. The Port Day Meal fee of $6.00 USD per child/per meal, applies for the supervision of children during the scheduled meal times. Please check the activity programme onboard for the Port Play Mealtime slots. Splash Academy does not offer dinner service if the ship departs the port at 5:00pm or earlier, therefore, if your child was dropped off for afternoon lunch/port play, it is highly requested that you check on your child by 5:30pm as he/she may be hungry.

The Safety Assimilation Drill is a short safety drill and message conducted early in the sailing to allow for youth and staff in Splash Academy to be aware of the established processes in the unlikely event of an emergency. The youth do not leave the facility.

Yes, unless you are issued a handy phone or pager, which requires at least 1 authorised pick up person to remain onboard in case the staff or child needs your assistance. The Youth Programme Manager will enquire with the security team.

This policy is in place for the safety of your child. Pagers and handy phones do not work ashore from the ship.

Handy phones or pagers will be given out for the following reasons:

  • -If your child is in nappies
  • -If your child or staff needs your assistance beyond the scope of the youth programmes care provided

Youth Programme Manager reserves the right to issue a handy phone or pager to parents if the situation with the child requires parent/pick-up person assistance.

If a handy phone or pager is issued to you and your child is signed into the programme, not responding to a page or call within 15 minutes will result in a $75.00 fee and your child will be dismissed from the programme.

If a handy phone or pager is issued a fee of $150.00 will be applied to your onboard account if the device is not returned or if it is returned broken.

Most drop offs will take place in the Splash Academy; however due to high counts the 10 - 12 year old programme may be in a different location. This is not meant to cause inconvenience as it allows us to take in more children.

It is recommended that you check the Dolphins Programme for all drop off locations.

Yes. Teens are always expected to be courteous and respectful. When entering Entourage, Teens should have their key card and wristband available/visible. Teens are also responsible for any personal items brought to activities and events. Teens participating in our programmes are prohibited from smoking, drinking alcohol and using profanity. Violence and vandalism will not be tolerated.l.

It is highly encouraged that teens/parents discuss when they plan to attend Entourage. In addition, Parents should establish a plan to know where the teen will be when not in Entourage.

There is a 1:00 a.m. curfew for all teenage guests. Teens must proceed to their staterooms unless they are accompanied by their parent/guardian. All crew members are instructed to report inappropriate behavior to Ship Security.

For safety reasons, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings strongly discourages teens from travelling ashore alone in the ports of call.

Great family fun is offered throughout the cruise. Activities are subject to change per ship/itinerary but may include shipboard challenges, a circus show, movie night, sports competitions, scavenger hunts, dance parties, game show challenges and poolside challenges.

Please remember that a parent or guardian is required to be present throughout the duration of the activity in order for the child to participate in designated Family Activities.

Yes. 24-hour Internet service and arcade games are available on the ship and are accessible with your stateroom key card. Fees are charged directly to your onboard account. Parents, if you do not wish for your child to have access, please visit the reception desk and deactivate your child's card.

Youth Programmes and Youth Programme facilities adhere to fire code safety and maximum occupancy* guidelines outlined per vessel based on Fire Safety Standard Code. In the event the facilities reach maximum occupancy, there could be delayed wait times for drop off.

*Maximum Fire Code Capacity refers to the maximum number of children and staff allowed inside the Youth Facilities at any time to provide safety and prevent overcrowding. Splash Academy and Entourage staff are required to enforce the set limits and reserve the right to temporarily suspend drop off service to registered guests once the maximum capacity has been reached. Access to facilities will be granted once children/teens are signed -out or picked up and space becomes available. The service is available on a first come first served basis.

Parents or guardians must alert the Youth Staff of any allergies, required medications or special needs of their child/teen when registering. If a child has a severe allergy and uses an epipen, the epipen must come with the child.

The Youth Programme Manager has the right to issue a handy phone based if the need is determined.

Youth Staff are not allowed to administer any medication to any child.

If a child/teen of any age is not feeling well, he/she should visit the medical centre. Before returning to the programme, he/she must be cleared by the doctor. Please refer to Childhood Exclusion Policy that is posted outside all Youth Programme facilities. A standard medical centre charge may apply.

  • Step 1: Verbal Warning - Teens exhibiting inappropriate behavior will be asked to stop immediately.
  • Step 2: Parent Notification - If the inappropriate behavior does not stop, parents will be notified and informed that if the behavior doesn't change, the teen will be dismissed for 24 hours or dismissal from the programme may occur, depending on the severity of the inappropriate action.
  • Step 3: 24-Hour Dismissal with Parent/Ship Notification - If the inappropriate behavior does not stop, he/she will be dismissed from the Entourage and Teen Programme for 24 hours. Parents and Ship Security will be notified

IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL: : Any teenager passenger exhibiting violence, vandalism, vaping, or intoxication when participating in the Teen Programme or using Entourage, will result in immediate dismissal for the entire sailing. Parents and Ship Security will be notified.

In an unlikely event of an emergency, if teens are in Entourage, the Teen Counsellor will direct the teens to their Assembly Stations; however, teens are personally responsible for proceeding to their Assembly Stations. Parents should ensure that their teen(s) are familiar with their Assembly Station location number or letter. This information can be found on the guest key card and on the back of the stateroom door.

For overall safety, parents are responsible for their children at all times, even when not present.

  • Step 1: Verbal Warning - The Youth Counsellor addresses the child and it is explained that his/her behavior is unacceptable and needs to be improved immediately.
  • Step 2:Reflection Time - If the child continues to disobey the Youth Counsellor, a time out is issued and the parents are notified at pick-up time.
  • Step 3: Suspension - If a time out is not effective in eliminating the inappropriate behavior, the parents are located and the child is dismissed from the programme for 24 hours. The child is then welcomed back after the time frame noted.
  • Step 4: Dismissal - Once the child is allowed back into the programme after the initial dismissal, if any disobedient behavior continues, the child will no longer be allowed to participate. More severe behaviours may warrant a higher discipline as deemed appropriate by the Youth Programme Supervisor.

Entourage combines the hang out zone, dance zone, game zone and party zone. The Teen Counsellors plan intriguing activities and challenges to keep the teens coming back for more. Activities and games may take place around the ship. Parents should know that the activities are hosted by the Teen Counsellors. However, when activities take place around the ship, Entourage may be unsupervised.

For overall safety, children should pack and be expected to wear to closed toe sneakers when participating in activities at the Sports Court. In addition, children can decide to pack items that match with the common themes; but please know that items will also be created and made onboard for each theme for the children. We focus on creativity, self-expression, and engagement.

  • Step 3: If the child is still crying, the parent will be called. It is expected that the parent come to check on their child in person within 10 minutes of the call.

  • Step 2: Check for nappy change, hunger, thirst
  • Step 3: If the child is still crying, the parent will be called. It is expected that the parent pick up within 10 minutes of the call.

Parents should be aware that Norwegian Cruise Line Youth Counsellors in Splash Academy on any ship are not able to assist children in the washrooms. This includes pulling up/down pants, buttoning/unbuttoning pants and/or wiping assistance. A pager or handy phone will be issued to alert you when your child needs assistance. Any parent or at least one authorised pick up person of a child needing assistance in the washroom and using the drop off service, on sea days or ports must be reachable and remain on board as papers and handy phones do not work ashore. A $75.00 USD fee will charged to the parent's onboard account and the child will be dismissed from programme if the authorised pick up people leave the ship and/or cannot be reached.

Splash Academy will accept children in diapers who are eligible to participate in the complimentary, drop-off program. However, Youth Counselors in Splash Academy on any ship are not able to change diapers or pull-ups. The parent, primary guardian or authorized pick up person is responsible to assist their child and will be given a pager or handy phone to alert them when their child needs assistance. The page must be responded to within 15 minutes. In the event there is an immediate health and sanitary concern to the child, facility, or other children, the child will be assisted into clean clothes until the parents arrive or can be reached.

For either service, Guppies Drop Off Nursery or Splash Academy, Any parent or at least one authorized pick up person of a child in diapers using the drop off service, on sea days or while the ship is in port, must be reachable and remain on board as pagers and handy phones do not work ashore from the ship.

A $75.00 USD fee will apply and the child will be dismissed from the program if the following occur:

1. A parent does not respond to a page within 15 minutes.

2. A parent or authorized pick up person does not remain onboard during port day services.

Identification bracelets are issued to children ages 3 - 12 when registered for the youth programmes and worn for the entire cruise. The bracelet is colour coordinated for each age group, displays the child's safety muster station and any allergies. Medical conditions are coded privately for internal use. Norwegian Escape offers a fee-based Guppies Nursery for children 6 months - under 3 years old.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings does not provide one-on-one care or babysitting on any ship.

On port days, children ages 3 - 12 are combined for programming from arrival into port until departure from port or 6:00 pm, whichever comes first. Please know that children under 12 are supervised when in Splash Academy.

Note to parents:

If parents go ashore, it is recommended to use the Splash Academy services for children under 12 year old. Parents should never leave their child(ren) unattended on the ship during a port day with no guardianship. Parents found to have left their minor (under 17) onboard with no guardian is subject to fines, ship dismissal, and a legal investigation.

Parents or Primary Guardian(s) (if children are not travelling with their parents) may select a total of four (4) people (including themselves) to drop off/pick up their child(ren) from Splash Academy (Fleetwide).

The authorised drop off and pick-up people are the same people and must be listed on the child's profile at the time of registration and must be 18 years of age or older..

Splash Academy, and Entourage are adult free zones (18+) regardless of what programme is taking place.

Parents/guardians/adults are only allowed in Splash Academy and Entourage facilities on embarkation day during the registration process.

If a 12 year old is registered for Splash Academy, it is understood that 12 year olds need special attention and programmes; therefore the Dolphins Youth Counsellors offer more mature games/theme nights and timetable Entourage Take-Overs allowing the Dolphins to enjoy the lounge, video games, air hockey, foosball, music videos and much more.

NCLH has a strict no age bumping policy, unless the children have a birthday during the cruise. The birthday policies for each age group are as follows with no exceptions:

  • - Children turning three (3) years old during the cruise are welcome to register and participate on their birthday.

Flexible Programming allows for the children to choose their interest-based activity. There will many options for them to explore from Dynamic, Creative, Gaming, and Chill. They can choose one or they can choose all of them. The activities will vary per session.

Yes, although children are registered for and placed in the appropriate age group based on their date of birth at the time of sailing for quality programmes. For quality programmes, certain hours within the programme, called Feel Free Play, are designated for friends and siblings to play together. When Feel Free Play is not in session, children are placed in their appropriate age groups for programming. No exceptions will be made to age bump to a different age group.

Children of different ages can also play together during Port Play and Late Night Fun Zone. For safety concerns 3-5 year olds may be separated yet efforts will be made to keep siblings together.

It is not advised for a child to bring in electronics or personal items to Splash Academy. In the event the child does bring in an item, the child is fully responsible for the item if lost or damaged. In addition, whilst in programme, the device should be used on a limited basis as to not distract other children from the programme. We also reserve the right to remove the item in attempt to control shared content that may be inappropriate for all ages.

Overall, there are very few fees associated with the Youth Programmes.

  • Splash Academy Late Pick Up Fee: $1.00 per minute.
  • Pager/Handy Phone Fee: $150.00 USD for damage and replacement.
  • Splash Academy and Guppies Nursery Diaper Changing Fee: $75.00 USD and program dismissal
  • Splash Academy Late Pick-Up Fee: $1.00 USD per minute, starting at the 16th minute and the child can be dismissed from program for excessive late pick-ups.
  • Guppies Nursery Missed Time Block Fee: $20.00 per child/$16.00 per sibling.
  • Guppies Nursery Cancellation Fee: No charge if cancellation takes place 12 or more hours prior.
  • Guppies Nursery Late Pick-Up Fee: $1.00 USD per minute
  • Early Morning Club: $6.00 USD per child/per hour, $4.00 USD per sibling/per hour.

Parents can allow their 10 - 12 year old to sign themselves out of Splash Academy after two hours of participation.

The authorisation ends nightly at 10:30 p.m. Therefore, at 10:30 p.m., the 10 -12 year old will be signed out from Splash Academy, unless the parent registers the child for Late Night Fun Zone.

If the child does not wish to remain in Splash Academy for the two hours, the parent or another authorised pick up person or another authorised guardian can pick up the child at any time.

The sign out authorisation does not apply on Port Days.

It is recommended that parents decline the authorisation if they do not want their 10 - 12 year old unattended or if the child has a moderate to severe special need. It is also recommended for safety purposes, to establish a meet-up plan for 10-12 year olds who are given the sign out authorisation so you are aware of where they are when not in the programme.

Opening hours on Sea Days and Port Days whilst the ship is sailing are posted onboard the ship or via the Freestyle Daily.

On all ships, for Splash Academy and Entourage, a one-time registration is to be completed by a parent or guardian (if child is not travelling with their parent) for each child/teen age 5 - 17. Children/teens can then participate as frequently as they choose. Norwegian requests that you let the Youth Staff know if your child has allergies, is taking any medications, or has any special needs by noting this on the Registration Form.

Onboard Norwegian Escape, any parent wanting to use the Guppies Nursery is required to complete a one-time registration for children ages 6 months - under 3 years old along with securing a reservation for the desired time block session(s). Be sure to register your child and make reservations for the desired time block(s), once onboard, with the Nursery Attendant.

Guppies Nursery is permanently closed on Norwegian Escape.

Family Activities: The Cruise and Youth teams offer an array of engaging family activities that brings everyone closer together. Bring your competition and A-Game for Beat Your Bed Time, Music Mania, Compete Opposites, and Family Dodgeball. Who will rule? The parents or the children?

Guppies Open Play: For the littlest cruisers, the Guppies Open Play offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months - 3 years old and/or children in nappies. Please refer to the onboard Guppies activity programme for the location, dates, and times. The timetable varies per ship and itinerary.

Splash Academy: A drop off programme for children ages 3-12, fully potty trained (without nappies/pull ups), offering flexible programming, allowing children to explore and make their own interest-based choices throughout the sailing.

Entourage is the teen hang out for 13 -17 year olds. Refer to Entourage FAQ What does Entourage have to offer teens 13 -17 years old?

For Splash Academy, and Entourage, it is recommended that parents register their child(ren) and teen(s) as soon as they board the ship. Any Youth Counsellor on board the ship is available to assist.
