Ride Your Dreams: Jumbo-Visma's Annual Tour de France Jersey Design Revealed

Starry-eyed children and big cycling dreams are some of the designer’s inspirations.

Only one person gets to wear the yellow jersey during the Tour de France, which is why, around this time every year, Dutch team Jumbo-Visma—whose primary team color is yellow—unveils their one-off Tour jersey.

This year’s jersey features a mostly-black design, dotted with twinkling stars. At the upper center of the jersey, above the team’s bold logo, is a hexagon, inside which is a map of France. That hexagon is matched on the back of the jersey, featuring a constellation pattern.

The jersey will be worn by Jumbo’s men’s and women’s teams in this year’s Tours. The men’s race starts July 1 in Bilbao, Spain. The Tour de France Femmes starts on July 23 in Cleremont-Ferrand, France.

The inspiration for the jersey comes from an antique bicycle-themed ride at Efteling called “The Vélodrome,” which, according to the press release from Jumbo-Visma announcing the jersey, “tells the story of a little cyclist who, under a sparkling starry sky, breaks free from the merry-go-round called The Vélodrome and, as if in a dream, finishes on the Champs-Élysées.”

“The shirt’s starry sky reflects the power of dreams, framed by elegant gold embellishments,” the release continues. 

The fairytale was written by the one of Efteling’s designers, Sander de Bruijn, who said, “It is a dream and an honor to design the Team Jumbo-Visma cycling jersey for the upcoming Tour de France. The underlying theme, ‘Believe in your dreams,’ is one of the best stories and messages we can share with children and all spectators of the upcoming Tour de France through the creation of ‘The Vélodrome: Ride your Dreams.’”

Jumbo fans around the world can not only order their own Vélodrome jersey , but if they do so before May 1, they can personalize their jersey with a moment in their own life that will be reflected in a corresponding star map on the back of the jersey.

Jumbo is still waiting to hear word from the UCI as to whether each of their riders can carry a personal star chart on their jerseys throughout the Tour.

Just as the dark design of last year’s jersey —which was inspired by the Dutch masters Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Van Gogh—distinguished Jumbo riders from the yellow jersey, so too will this year’s dark theme.

Of course, if Jonas Vingegaard repeats his victory from 2022, as he and his Jumbo-Visma teammates hope, it won’t make much of a difference.

“Winning the Tour de France last year was a long-cherished dream come true,” said Jumbo-Visma’s general manager, Richard Plugge. “And, of course, we will do everything we can to make our dreams come true once again.”

Client: Team Jumbo-Visma

Team Jumbo-Visma launched a special shirt to wear in the 2023 Tour de France. The shirt is a collaboration with Dutch theme park Efteling and was designed around the theme of the Velodrome, a nostalgic attraction and also in a sense translates as a cycling dream. Each rider of the team has a custom dream of theirs that came true printed on the back.

To promote the shirt, I did a number of photoshoots with different riders of the team. These included studio shoots in Belgium, France and at a training stage in Spain. Additionally, riders posed outdoors to get some more lifestyle feel shots. Finally, I joined the men’s team for the Tour de France training stage in Sierra Nevada and captured content of the riders training while wearing this beautiful shirt.

Altogether I shot multiple hundreds of images of about 16 riders wearing the shirt. The images were used on a variety of online channels to promote the shirt.

Jumbo-Visma have confirmed their final eight-rider team for the Tour de France , building their squad around 2022 winner Jonas Vingegaard as they target a Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double.

Also in the roster are Wout van Aert, Dylan van Baarle, Sepp Kuss, Tiesj Benoot, Christophe Laporte, Nathan Van Hooydonck and Wilco Kelderman, offering Vingegaard vital support on the flat and in the mountains, while van Aert and Laporte will perhaps also target the sprint stages. Kelderman and Kuss will provide vital play a key role in the mountain, with the American super-domestique possibly riding all three Grand Tours in 2023. 

“We exceeded our wildest dreams last year with six stage victories, the polka dot jersey, and most importantly, the green and yellow jersey. This year we are dreaming big too,” senior directeur sportif Merijn Zeeman said when the team was revealed.

“Our ambition is to bring the yellow jersey back to Paris. We have a super strong team led by our leader Jonas Vingegaard, and we believe in our plan. Winning the Giro has been a dream come true for us this season. Our riders are prepared for a double at the Tour.”

Primož Roglič raced alongside Vingegaard when he cracked Tadej Pogačar in the Alps in the 2022 Tour de France. This year Jumbo-Visma have divided their Grand Tour leaders, with Roglič winning the Giro d’Italia and set to ride the Vuelta a Espana. Vingegaard has proven his form with a dominant victory at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné. 

The Dane is suited to this year’s mountainous Tour route but he and Jumbo-Visma face major opposition from Pogačar and UAE Team Emirates and a host of other podium contenders.   

Jumbo-Visma will race in a new black and yellow jersey which the team says emphasises the power of dreams. Each jersey features a personalised starry sky symbolising the riders' dreams.

Van Aert won the Belgian time trial title last week, while Van Baarle is the new Dutch road race national champion and so will wear a red, white and blue jersey.  

To inspire young children to follow their dreams, a storybook called “Look, I can do it!” has been created. It tells the story of the Velodrome via text and drawings. The booklet contains a QR code that allows the story to be read aloud in several languages by various Team Jumbo-Visma riders, including Vingegaard and Van Aert.

"When I was a kid, I wanted to be a professional cyclo-cross rider and win a cyclo-cross race in my hometown, just like my heroes. My dream came true in 2016 when I won the Belgian championship in my hometown of Lille. It inspires me to keep dreaming and pursue my goals,” Van Aert explained.
