Day Trips from Rennes

rennies day trips

The town of Dinan is about 50 kilometers north of Rennes . Dinan is located on a hill above the river Rance, which flows into the sea at St-Malo. On a boat trip on the Rance you can visit both cities.

Dinan has around 14,000 inhabitants and offers a historic old town with beautiful half-timbered houses in the Rue de l'Horloge and the Place des Cordeliers. Worth a visit is also the castle built in the 14th century. The picture-book town is surrounded by a 2.6-kilometer-long city wall. The most famous building in Dinan is the Tour de l'Horloge . Another attraction is the gothic  church Saint-Malo. Rue du Jerzual, with its traditional artisan workshops, leads to the small port of Dinan with its cafes and restaurants.

rennies day trips

St-Malo is the most beautiful harbor town on the French Channel coast. The city with about 46,000 people was built on a peninsula to be protected against attacks from land. In the 12th century, Saint-Malo was surrounded by a medieval city wall, which was fortified in the 17th century. At the northeastern edge of the city wall, Queen Anne de Bretagne had the château built in 1500 to control the defiant population of St-Malo. She had the words "Quic en groigne, ainsi, sera, car tel est mon plaisir" carved on a tower. In English: Who wants to grunt, should grumble, I don't care! The locals call the castle simply "Quic en groigne".

From Saint-Malo, corsairs set sail for hijacking English freighters. They had a coroner's letter from the French government and gave the state a share of the profit. Around 1700, Saint-Malo was the main port of France. The most famous corsair was Robert Surcouf . A statue on the city wall is dedicated to Jacques Cartier , who explored the Saint Lawrence River in 1535.

During the Second World War, Saint-Malo was destroyed by British bombers because the German commander did not want to surrender. After the war, St-Malo was reconstructed after historical photos and today looks like a 17th-century town.

Jacques Cartier who explored the St. Lawrence River and thus pave the way for the French colony of New France was born in Rothéneuf. The Indian settlements Stadacona near Quebec and Hochelaga on Mont Real were discovered by Jacques Cartier.

The sights of Rothéneuf are the weathered stone heads called Les Rochers Sculptés , by the priest Abbé Fouré at the rocky coast. Fouré was paralyzed half-sided since his 30th year. He created bizarre fantasy characters until he died in 1910 at the age of 71. The granite sculptures are on a private property, you have to pay a small amount of money as entrance fee.

The village of Rothéneuf is located about 6 kilometers northeast of St-Malo.

Saint Lunaire

Saint Lunaire is located west of St-Malo, on the other side of the Rance estuary. The small coastal town has two wide sandy beaches. The main beach is at Rue de la Grève , where you will also find the Grand Hotel, the Tourist Office and the town center of Saint Lunaire. Who wants to see a spectacular sunset should visit the Plage de Longchamp . The beach is oriented to the northwest and offers a romantic sunset in the summer. Above the beach stands a german bunker from the Second World War. Saint Lunaire is a quiet town that does not seem to be crowded even in midsummer.

The Cap Frehel is one of the most famous places in Brittany. The 70 m high rocks offers a beautiful view over the cliffs. From the Phare du Cap Frehel  (lighthouse), the view is even more spectacular. At Cap Frehel there is the bird cliff La Fauconnière , where puffins and other seabirds have settled. If you like, you can hike along the coast to Fort La Latte . The coastal walk on a narrow path is about 8 kilometers long.

rennies day trips

The small coastal town of Cancale is located about 12 kilometers east of Saint Malo. Shells are bred in the shallow bay. There is a market on the waterfront where you can buy fresh shells and seafood. At the port there are also numerous restaurants famous for their fresh mussels.

Côte de Granit Rose

Northwest of Perros-Guirec, the Côte de Granit Rose extends until Trébeurden. Pink rock formations gave their name to the enchanting coastline. No visitor to Brittany should miss this beautiful coastline. The Côte de Granit Rose is considered to be the most beautiful landscape in Brittany. The bizarre rocks change their color depending on the light. The section between the Plage de Trestraou in Perros-Guirec and the beach of Saint-Guirec is the highlight of the Côte de Granit Rose. Here is a coastal path on which you can walk through the bizarre rocky landscape. This part is also called Sentier des Douaniers  (publicans path). The reddish granite was sanded down by wind and water, of course the most famous rock is the "Hat of Napoleon" and the Château du Diable (Devil's Castle).

The port city of Paimpol became famous for fishing. The novel "The Icelandic Fishermen" by Julien Viaud played in the streets of Paimpol. A road was even named after the Icelandic fishing grounds Rue des Islandais Grundarfjordur . From 1935 onward the fishing industrie declined and the fishing port became a marina for tourists. The harbor is still the center of Paimpol, here are the restaurants, cafes, bakers and butchers, young ladies from Paris and the old gentlemens from Paimpol stroll along the basin. The most beautiful corner of the city is the intersection where Rue des Huit Patriotes meets Rue de la Vieille Poissonnerie (photo).

rennies day trips

Point de l'Arouest

About 5 kilometers north of Paimpol is the Point de l'Arouest , the end point of the peninsula. From here you can catch the ferry to the rugged Île de Bréhat , which is only 2 kilometers away. The beach at the Point de l'Arouest is very rocky, at low tide you can see rocks everywhere in the water. Some rocks have acquired an intense yellow color due to lichen growth.

Chateau Vitré

Vitré is located about 35 kilometers east of Rennes , on the way to Paris . The small town has about 18,000 inhabitants, but looks very sleepy. This is probably due to the large shopping centers Vitré has built on the outskirts. Most of the shops are in Rue de la Poterie . But you do not come here for shopping but for the grandiose castle. The castle of Vitré was built around the year 1000 and was enlarged in the 13th century to its present form. During this time, the old town of Vitré with church and city walls was built. The castle was built on a triangular site, with a large courtyard. In the 16th century, the castle was expanded into a castle. The Chateau Vité is one of the most beautiful medieval castles in France .

rennies day trips

Mont Saint Michel

The Mont Saint Michel is one of the most famous sights of France . The Mont Saint Michel is located about 60 kilometers to the north of Rennes in Normandy. Since this sight is overrun by millions of visitors, you should plan the visit if you want to stay overnight. We have summarized more detailed information in a special about Mont Saint Michel.

  • 21 day trip base ...

21 day trip base in Rennes, France

Train distances/number of hours to Normandy, Brittany coast from Rennes--can a rail trip to one of those be done in one day with return to Rennes that night? High speed train to Paris from Rennes--what to see there? Would like to avoid use of a car. First time visitors!

which cities/towns are you wishing to visit in Normandy and Brittany? Paris trip is 2 hrs 15 min each way and would cost 50 euro.

Rennes is well served by train and bus and you can get to lots of towns in Brittany and Normandy for day trips. A lot depends on which cities/towns you want to visit and what your 'outside' travel time each way is for a day trip. I usually limit day trips to places that take < 3 hours by train or bus each way, and even that can be stretching it and not leaving enough time to see everything I might want to see.

Rennes to St Malo about an hour, Dinan about 2 hr, Nantes about an 1-1/2 hr, Saint-Brieuc < 1hr, Fougeres - 2-1/2 hrs. To Bayeux in Normandy about 2 hrs 45 min, Caen 3 hours, Avranches a little over an hour, Mont St Michel about 2 hrs.

So, yes there are lots of good places to visit using Rennes as a base.

use this site to look up tickets and prices. http://www.ter.sncf.com/bretagne/tarifs/devis/recherche . This for busses. http://www.brittanytourism.com/practical-information/getting-around-brittany/by-coach

Three weeks at one home base sounds like a lot to me. Is some of that time allocated to sleeping in Paris? Reserve ahead for Rennes-Paris TGV trains, either to get an advance discount or to secure one of the limited pass holder seat reservations.

I'm with Laura: 21 days in Rennes as a home base is, to say the least unusual, certainly the most days we've probably ever had on this forum for a home base in Rennes.

Since the OP did not ask for critiques on their choice of place to stay (or for how long), I don't see the point of criticizing that choice. Maybe they're doing a home exchange, or maybe they're staying with friends, doesn't matter; they want info on day trips by public transportation. I've stayed in one place for 3 weeks before and done day trips from there, it can be very relaxing to stay in one place that long. Suggesting an overnight in Paris does make sense however since there is so much to see there.

While I, like most, tend to see as much as is sensible in a given time, it does sound wonderful to simply plant oneself in a town/city/village for an extended time.

I lived in Rennes for 5 months and had a great time there.

Nancy already hit on a lot of the great spots that are within a 3 hour train or bus ride. The Mont St Michel is a must. St-Malo, Dinan, Cancale, and Le Mont St Michel are all clustered together and it would be easy to include two in one day trip. Mix and match as you like. Nancy already mentioned the best spots for Normandy day trips so I won't repeat.

Since you have three weeks, I'll recommend a few places further afield (still within 3 hours). You could do a day trip (though it may make sense to stay a night...that's what I did) to Tours so that you can see the great castles in the Loire Valley (Chenonceau, Villandry, Azay le Rideau, etc). I had a great day trip to Concarneau where there is a castle built in the harbor. You could combine Concarneau with seeing nearby Quimper which has a cool half-timber town center with a grand cathedral. Well, it's far from the greatest cathedral in France, but it's probably the best one of all the destinations recommended here except for maybe Caen. If you can get yourself out to the Pointe du Raz , that's a great place to walk around on the peninsula when the weather cooperates. Windy days just make it more dramatic.

Have a great time!

Top Day Trips from Moscow

No comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Entertainment , Travel , Video

Moscow , the sprawling historical, economic and cultural capital of Russia, home to 12 million people and countless museums, galleries, restaurants and parks, is certainly seeing a lot of action this summer.

With the FIFA World Cup in full swing, over 1 million fans from across the globe have poured into this iconic city, which is hosting a grand total of 12 World Cup matches this summer. Although there’s never been a better time to be in Moscow, the intense crowds and, of course, the infamous summer heat waves, can sometimes be a little too much.

The Russian capital is well connected to a huge variety of national parks, cities, villages and historic sites, meaning you’ve got no shortage of amazing options to escape the city and soak up the best of Russian culture. Here’s a round-up of the best day trips to take from Moscow.

The Archangelskoye Estate

Only an hour away on the train from central Moscow, the sprawling Archangelskoye is a heart-stopping masterpiece of old Russian splendour. Originally belonging to the notorious Golitsyn dynasty, this massive estate is one of the best-preserved showcases of Russian neoclassical architecture in the world, with the ornately curated gardens being home to multiple mansions, each with their own original and eclectic design.

As well as drinking in the beautiful surroundings in this serene oasis, the estate also plays host to many of Russia’s most acclaimed music festivals, so make sure to keep tabs on what’s on this summer.

If you’re looking for a little bit of city life without the manic hustle of Moscow, hop on the train for 90 minutes and you’ll find yourself in the vibrant city of Saransk , the historic capital of the Republic of Mordovia.

Long known for its vibrant cultural scene, you should make sure to hit up the Maly Theatre and of course, the official State Puppet Theatre, which has a long tradition of performing daring and hilarious puppet satires. You may even find yourself there with the World Cup, as this small city has hosted eight teams there this summer, including Portugal – a team who topped their group and progressed as 25/1 outsiders according to the bookmaker Betway .

The Mordovia Arena stadium, which is hosting all the games, is worth a visit in itself, given the surreal design and monumental scale of this sparkling new stadium. Also make sure to check out the imposing Regional Museum, just a stone’s throw away from the train station, to learn more about this tiny and tortured republic, as well as sampling the fare at the surprisingly good museum cafe.

This unique and ancient little town , just a few miles outside of Moscow (although it has no train station, you can get the train to nearby Vladimir and use public transport), is often described as somewhere completely untouched by time.

It is the physical embodiment of the mythical and much-idealized Russian vision of simple country life, a small village full of dirt roads, friendly locals and beautiful old churches. The town is also well-known for the local mead produced there, a highly alcoholic drink made of honey, so make sure to sample the local wares and get a little buzz going before you hit up the 13th-century monastery by the main river.

This is definitely the place to go if you want to get away from the international bubble of Moscow and experience a little bit of traditional Russia, and prices here are naturally several times lower for just about everything.

Gorki Leninskie

You can’t do Russia without exploring some of the Soviet history which left a permanent mark on the country and the world, and the best place to do so is the Gorki Lenenskie.

Just under an hour away from Moscow by train, this estate was where the Soviet leader Lenin lived out his final years, and it’s where you’ll find some striking examples of Soviet architecture , as well as a painstakingly detailed museum documenting this influential figure’s life, loves, achievements and dramas.

Most of the exhibits are in Russian, but this is still an important place to go to get a better picture of the monumental upheavals that Russia has experienced in the last century.

Day trip to Yasnaya Polyana from Moscow: transport, sights, tips, advices

rennies day trips

Main Sights

rennies day trips

Of course the main sight here is the Yasnaya Polyana estate itself. Located within the estate are the house where Tolstoy lived plus the auxiliary buildings of the estate which now contain exhibits dedicated to the work of peasants in running the estate.

Tolstoy's Cabinet

The natural surroundings of the estate are also a highlight and don't forget to visit Tolstoy's simple grave on the territory of the estate.

rennies day trips

During the low season from November until April, it is possible to visit the main house by yourself and take an audio guide (Russian, English, French or German). However from April until November you can only join a Russian group excursion.

rennies day trips

Excursions around Yasnaya Polyana are held about every hour - tickets are bought at the ticket office next to the main gates. Excursions start there as well.

rennies day trips

During the excursion, you will visit the central part of the estate, the Tolstoy House, and the exhibition in the Kuzminsky House.

Some exciting activities are offered by the museum including horse riding, carriage rides or sleigh rides, and tea drinking at the Coachmen's house with an interactive tour of a traditional Russian peasant's hut. In summer, excursions on bikes around places connected with Tolstoy are also organised. Activities should be booked in advance by email.

There is a little cafe called Prishpekt located just opposite the main gates where you can buy tea, pies and some hot dishes. Two kilometres from the Yasnaya Polyana estate, there is a restaurant and cafe and places where you can spend the night.

Visiting Tula

Tula Kremlin

Three to five hours is enough to see all the sights and museums of the estate. So you should have time to go back to Tula and have a quick look around before heading back to Moscow. You could also make the trip into a weekend trip by spending the night and next day in Tula, which is worth a day-trip in itself as the city has a nice Kremlin and is associated in Russia with samovars, weapons and the Russian equivalent of gingerbread known as a 'pryanik'. To find out more about Tula visit our Tula pages.

Suggested Timetable

Here is our suggested timetable for making the most of a day-trip to Yasnaya Polyana. All train and bus times are approximate as the exact time may change.

There are a few souvenirs shops near the car park for the estate where you can buy standard Russian souvenirs such as Russian dolls and some local ones dedicated to the estate, Tolstoy and his work.

Review: Rennie Harris and Chicago House to the Rescue

Hubbard Street Dance Chicago presents the first of two programs at the Joyce Theater, including a sparkling New York premiere by the hip-hop choreographer Rennie Harris.

Four dancers aloft their arms out to their sides like wings, their heads tilted up. They wear sneakers and loose pants.

By Gia Kourlas

When a repertory company comes to town with two programs, and one has a Rennie Harris dance on it, choose that . This Philadelphia hip-hop choreographer is a treasure and so are his dances.

“Dear Frankie,” the rousing closer to a program by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago , was such a poetic wonder — in sound, in look, in stillness and in action — that it almost made up for what had come before it. Almost. It was a long night.

Hubbard Street, now in its 46th season, returned to the Joyce Theater on Tuesday for a two-week run. (The program next week features works by Lar Lubovitch, Rena Butler and Aszure Barton.) Now under the artistic direction of Linda-Denise Fisher-Harrell — a former company member who went on to be a much admired Alvin Ailey dancer — the group presented the New York premiere of Harris’s “Dear Frankie” along with works by Darrell Grand Moultrie and Thang Dao.

In “Dear Frankie,” Harris pays homage to a pioneer of Chicago’s house culture, the D.J. Frankie Knuckles . Known as the “godfather of house,” he was pivotal in introducing the genre to the world. The dance starts off slowly yet stylishly: James Clotfelter’s lighting immediately transports us to a club where, every so often, bright white beams flood light onto the stage. It’s so stark, so subtle in how it encloses the space, turning it into a haven.

At first dancers cluster at the center of the stage, but gradually they wander off, gliding together in small groups as they tickle the floor with footwork before slipping into other constellations of bodies. In these brief fragments, like tiny chapters building up to a book, the dancers find their bearings as the beat begins to soak into their skin. At one point, Abdiel Figueroa Reyes lets loose, his limbs rippling like spun silk.

Beyond steps, glorious as they are, Harris is passing on Chicago house culture. In a series of voice-overs, he and others describe the importance of the dance club the Warehouse , where people discovered freedom through movement and found their chosen families.

The dancers’ footwork starts out in fits and spurts, becoming more intricate, more full-bodied as Harris weaves slow motion within blissfully fast crossing feet and lanky arms. His deft musicality and visual finesse creates more than a dance. Harris molds the energy of a space as if it’s a spiritual act, transforming a proscenium stage into a club.

It helps that the dancers look like real people in Imani Sade’s separates, a mix of athletic and sensual. The music by Harris and the producer Darrin Ross — including the galvanizing “We Gon Be Alright,” which Ross composed, produced and mixed — carries the dancers to a sweeping, pulsating finale. Then Aaron Choate walks to the center of the stage, ponytail swinging, and arches under a spotlight topped with a strobe flash. In that second, the scene disappears as if Choate has ascended to heaven. This makes sense: House is heaven.

But the night had been a struggle up to that point. Another New York premiere, Thang Dao’s “Nevermore,” is inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven” and Eastern folklore. Named after the Raven’s repeated refrain, “Nevermore,” the dance is an uneven weaving together of two stories.

The work, which includes a recitation of the poem as part of James G. Lindsay’s score, layers “The Raven,” in which a man descends into despair after the loss of his love, Lenore, with a folk tale in which a forbidden romance blooms between a weaver girl and a cowherd. The girl and the cowherd are separated by a celestial river, but are able to be together one day a year when a flock of magpies forms a bridge over it.

Elliot Hammans, in billowy white, sits on an armchair made up of dancers — they push him forward and pull back — as he yearns for Lenore (Jacqueline Burnett), in flowing red. They reappear later as the lovers in the folk tale. But this is really about the birds, dancers draped in black with red socks, who angle their arms like wings with flickering fingers and swirl around the stage in fluttering lines. Eventually Burnett is swallowed up by the flock, and Hammans resumes his place in his chair, a vision of, sorry, silly desperation.

The program led with Darrell Grand Moultrie’s well-meaning but seriously overwrought “Dichotomy of a Journey,” a seven-part dance starting with “Vitality” and ending with “Resilience.” In “Connection,” a duet for Burnett and David Schultz, the dancers touched the tips of their elbows with a strange kind of fervor — like a Covid date — before, eventually, writhing on the floor.

“Vision” featured Hammans, in white jeans, contorting and stretching as he reacted viscerally to the positivity and possibility of the lyrics to “In My Dreams” by V. Michael McKay: “I dreamed of a perfect place with but one human race.”

The choreography was more uplifting when all of the dancers converged as one in the final moments of “Resilience” to Donald Lawrence’s “Encourage Yourself (Live).” It was a bit hokey, but in the end, the idea of hope — seen through their shining eyes and expressive bodies — was contagious.
