Swedish pop group ABBA could be bringing their Voyage hologram concert to Australia if new reports prove to be true. Voyage features de-aged digital holograms of ABBA, backed by a live 10-piece band playing over vocals originally recorded in the ‘70s and ‘80s.

The Sydney Morning Herald has cited anonymous sources, claiming Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park is involved in a bid to bring the production to Australia.

The paper claims the price tag to be around $50-80million, but the high cost is said to be endangering the bid, with a debt-burdened New South Wales State Government unwilling to contribute to the bill. Speaking to the SMH , the NSW Arts Minister John Graham blamed a “$100million hole in the state significant event fund” left by the recently departed Liberal government, last led by former Premier Dominic Perotet.

The same unnamed sources claim the Victorian State Government is engaged in its own bid to secure Voyage for a season at Melbourne Park. Neither government has officially confirmed its involvement in a deal to bring the production to their respective capitals.

Voyage first launched at a purpose-built arena in London in May 2022. The collapsable venue was designed with the express purpose of being packed down and transported for international tours. The band have indicated they intend to tour the production to Asia, Australia and North America. Voyage is currently set to run at its London location until May 2024.

ABBA have toured Australia just once in March 1977, which was also their last international tour before disbanding in 1982.

ABBA: Voyage in London scored a five-star review from NME’s Andrew Trendell, who wrote: “We welcome our new ABBAtar overlords, if only for giving these songs back to us in a totally new and joyful way. As the digital Anderson concluded: “Without a song or a dance, what are we? That is the question.”

$175 million ABBA virtual reality concert in talks to come to Australia

In good news for die-hard ABBA fans, the beloved group’s world-famous 3D virtual reality concert may be on its way to Australia, with the show’s executives reportedly in talks with the Victorian government.

Executives from ABBA Voyage recently scouted locations in Melbourne, according to The Age , and had meetings with the state government, Visit Victoria and entertainment company TEG Dainty.

WATCH THE VIDEO ABOVE: ABBA’s $US175 million virtual reality concert in talks to come to Australia.

Currently performed in London, a purpose-built arena would need to be erected to accommodate for the virtual avatars of the four band members and the extensive light show that accompanies the performance.

Victoria’s Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Steve Dimopoulos did not comment on whether the show may be coming to Melbourne but told 7NEWS.com.au: “As Australia’s major events capital, we’re always looking at new opportunities and events for our calendar.”

TEG would also not comment on whether it had had meetings with ABBA Voyage executives.

“We won’t be commenting this time round because all details are commercial in confidence,” a spokesperson said.

Voyage debuted in May 2022, with its venue, dubbed the ABBA Arena, built specifically for the show on a site in Stratford in east London.

The show was developed for five years with a $US174.9 ($A260) million budget funded by global investors.

In it, digital replicas of the four band members perform classic hits and newer numbers for 90 minutes, while also interacting with each other and speaking to the audience between songs.

As of March this year, Voyage has sold more than 1 million tickets.

ABBA  Voyage , the virtual holograms or ABBA-tars resembling band members Agnetha Fältskog , Anni-Frid Lyngstad  (or “Frida”),  Björn Ulvaeus  and Benny Andersson in 1979, could be making its way to Australia, a new report reveals.

London’s ABBA Arena, built specifically for this concert, has exclusively held the Voyage  shows since last May. Since its inception,  ABBA Voyage  has sold over 1 million tickets. And now, according to sources at Variety , the hologram concert is set to go on a world tour.

“Plans are now in development to take ‘ABBA Voyage’ around the world,” Universal Music Group chairman Lucian Grainge said during a company meeting. ABBA and Universal Music Group representatives didn’t offer Variety  any further information. It's not much to go on, but neither was that inside information about Madonna 's world tour , which is actually happening.

The reviews for ABBA Voyage have been glowing - as The Guardian ’s  Alexis Petridis wrote in a May 2022 recap , “By the time the show hits its finale with Thank You For The Music followed by  Dancing Queen , any lingering sense that you’re not actually in the presence of Abba has dissolved. It’s so successful that it’s hard not to imagine other artists following suit.”

Time Out ’s Chiara Wilkinson noted , “This is art built for the fans: it’s about standing side by side in a euphoric sense of togetherness, singing the same lyrics as thousands of other people while letting your senses go. This concept will probably go international, and it’s only the beginning for what the technology means for the stars of today. Fine, it will never replace real people. But it is still memorable and dazzling, and it was breathtaking entertainment.”

Discussing the emergence of the ABBA hologram tour back in 2018, Molly Meldrum , who has campaigned for the iconic group to bring the show to Australia , said, "ABBA are going to tour again, but it's with a difference, with a magical difference.

"So, I'll use the old saying - do yourself a favour and check it out!"

Having been lucky enough to witness ABBA Voyage in person, it will be spectacular to have the show happen in Australia. Sure, it’s a bit weird at first, but when you’re immersed in those songs and those avatars look so real, it’s hard not to believe you’re watching the real thing.

ABBA's new concert will be a virtual reunion after their new Voyage album

A digital version of Frida singing

Music lovers who score a ticket to ABBA's new concert next year have been promised a unique experience — a chance to see the band exactly as they performed in the 1970s.

ABBA announced overnight that they plan on dropping a new album in November, followed by a concert residency at a purpose-built theatre in London.

But once the gigs get underway, concertgoers won't see the septuagenarian superstars in person on the stage.

Instead, a new generation of fans will get to see digital projections of the group as they looked in 1979, at the height of their popularity.

A digitally created image of Benny Andersson form ABBA.

It removes a past barrier to an ABBA reunion tour; guitarist and songwriter Bjorn Ulvaeus previously lamented that he'd rather fans "remember us as we were".

But that's exactly what people will see, and the band has been collaborating with Hollywood special effects company Industrial Light and Magic to make their 70s selves a reality.

So will ABBA be on stage at the concerts?

You won't actually see the band in the flesh on stage — but you might catch a glimpse of them in the crowd.

Abba Eurovision in 1974

"We're going to be able to sit back in an audience and watch our digital selves perform our songs," the group's statement said.

The concert, which won't debut until May 27 next year, has already been recorded, using 160 cameras and five weeks of performances, which are now being synthesised into a 90-minute concert.

"Agnetha, Frida, Benny and Bjorn got on a stage in front of 160 cameras and almost as many VFX geniuses and they performed every song in this show to perfection over five weeks, capturing every mannerism, every emotion," producer Ludwig Andersson, who's also Benny Andersson's son, said.

"It is not a version of, or a copy of, or people pretending to be ABBA, it's actually them."

The process involved the band performing on a studio stage with motion capture leotards.

"We dressed up in leotards with dots and little things on them and we had dots on our faces and helmets, with cameras, and there we were, the four of us on stage together doing these songs," Ulvaeus said.

"We looked ridiculous."

Four members of ABBA

Do we know what ABBA will look like on stage?

We have some clues, but the only way to know for sure would be to experience the concert in person.

As part of the promotions for their Voyage album and concert residency, the band released a four-minute video showing the process of recording both the album and the concert .

We also got a glimpse at the digital band in the music video for the newly released song I Still Have Faith In You.

However, it remains to be seen how the digitally rendered image translates from a music video to a holographic presence on a stage.

As for the music they'll be playing, Benny Andersson said the setlist would feature the band's "greatest hits", plus some new material.

ABBA members hint at Australia tour

  • 26 May 2023

ABBA band members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson have hinted that they will be bringing their ABBA Voyage tour to Australia in 2024.

After premiering to critical acclaim in May 2022 at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (also known as the ABBA Arena) in London, ABBA Voyage is set to wrap up its sell-out season there in late November this year.

WATCH NOW: ABBA Voyage Trailer.  Article continues after video.

For those unaware, the ABBA Voyage show does not include a live performance from the band, but does feature virtual avatars that depict the group as they were in 1979.

Featuring handpicked hits by the band members themselves, the performance is advertised as a "concert like no other" with a spectacular live orchestra on hand to help bring the high-tech avatars to life.

And where better to take the show and its purpose-built 3000-seat arena than Australia?

Speaking with BBC Newsnight in late May, ABBA band members Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson confirmed that Australia was a likely contender for the new home of ABBA Voyage.

"I have to say I'd like to take the show to Australia," Benny said.

"It would feel good to go back there and say thank you to Australians for supporting us from day one."

e

The 76-year-old went on to add: "We achieved more than we could ever hope for...seeing this happening [ABBA Voyage] after four or five years of work...and realising that the audience actually connected to what was on stage."

"Not like watching a movie but as if we were actually there."

Abba Voyage is a "concert experience like no other."

ABBA only ever toured Australia once, playing 11 dates in 1977.

The band members are now well into their seventies, and performed together in public in 1986, four years after they officially disbanded in 1982.

d

Bjorn and Benny are very close friends.

Rumours did swirl however in 2016 that the iconic Swedish group took to the stage together at a private party in Stockholm.

According to the local publication Expressen , the very brief reunion took place at a party thrown by Bjorn and Benny in honour of their 50-year friendship.

Andersson has also previously revealed that the band had turned down a $1 billion dollar offer (yes you read that right) to reunite and tour together which the band declined.

Digital avatars of Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Anderson for Abba's Voyage tour.

Abba Voyage review: jaw-dropping avatar act that’s destined to be copied

Abba Arena, London Any sense you’re not actually in the presence of the band dissolves during a setlist of crowd-pleasing hits

T he opening of Abba’s Voyage show is undoubtedly an event – even the band’s most famously publicity-shy member, Agnetha Fältskog, is in attendance – but it’s one accompanied by a genuine sense of mystery. If the mystery isn’t as all-encompassing as that which surrounded the first night of Kate Bush’s return to live performance in 2014 – you at least have a pretty good idea in advance of what songs will be involved, which certainly wasn’t the case then – the question of precisely how Abba will be brought back to life almost 40 years after their last public performance remains veiled in secrecy.

We’ve all seen the band’s eerily de-aged digital avatars – or Abbatars, as they persist in calling them – but what form they take has remained classified: the only solid clue was that they weren’t holograms, which hasn’t stopped the British media doggedly referring to them as holograms ever since.

Bjorn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Faltskog, Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson at the premiere of Abba Voyage.

Whatever they are, the effect is genuinely jaw-dropping. Watching the four figures on the stage, it’s almost impossible to tell you’re not watching human beings: occasionally, there’s a hint of video game uncanny valley about the projections on the giant screens either side of the stage, but your attention is continually drawn to the human-sized avatars.

They gaze sadly into each other’s eyes during The Winner Takes It All, deliver cheesy speeches between songs – “I wasn’t married at the time,” says the figure representing Björn Ulvaeus, explaining the genesis of Does Your Mother Know, “or was I?” – and protest at the British judges giving them nul points during the 1974 Eurovision song contest. There are even lulls in the performance, just as there are at a “real” gig, usually when the action shifts from the avatars to more straightforward footage: a lengthy animation shown during Eagle providing an opportunity to visit the bar.

Aside from an opening salvo involving 1982’s darkly powerful The Visitors and Hole In Your Soul, a track from 1978’s Abba The Album, the setlist largely sticks to crowd-pleasing greatest hits – Waterloo, SOS, Knowing Me Knowing You – rather than scouring Abba’s oeuvre for deep cuts. This is both smart commercial sense – this is a show designed to run and run, potentially in several countries at once, something you’re never going to achieve if diehard fans are your target market – and probably for the best, given what a treacherous business scouring Abba’s oeuvre for deep cuts is.

Inside the Abba Arena.

You’re as likely to encounter something like Put On Your White Sombrero or King Kong Song – “can’t you hear the beating of the monkey tom-tom?” – as you are anything approaching the sublimity of Lay All Your Love On Me or The Winner Takes It All. Just as the Dolce & Gabbana-designed costumes rework the band’s 70s wardrobe in a tasteful way – evincing a restraint that Abba themselves seldom deployed in their heyday – so the music, performed by a live band, is occasionally faintly tweaked from the recorded versions the vocals are taken from: Voulez-Vous feels punchier and more raw.

By the time the show hits its finale with Thank You For The Music followed by Dancing Queen, any lingering sense that you’re not actually in the presence of Abba has dissolved. It’s so successful that it’s hard not to imagine other artists following suit – you strongly suspect the surviving members of Queen will be on the blower to Industrial Light & Magic before the week’s out.

However, Ulvaeus has already issued a warning to anyone planning on following Abba’s path to resurrect a deceased star: “It is better to do it with someone who is alive because … the measurements in the cranium are the same.” It’s a warning that’s going to go unheeded: access to cranial measurements or not, Voyage is the kind of triumph that’s destined not merely to run and run but be repeatedly copied.

"Dancing Queen", "Mamma Mia", "Money, Money, Money", "Waterloo", "I do, I do, I do, I do", "Fernando"...

ABBA Shares First Look into Virtual ‘Voyage’ Concert

by Tina Benitez-Eves November 4, 2021, 10:14 am

ABBA revealed the first look at their 2022 Voyage concert series. The 20-second trailer shows the digital avatars of the Swedish pop quartet of Agnetha Faltskog, Bjorn Ulvaeus, and Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid (Frida) Lyngstad, dancing to their 1978 song “Summer Night City,” donned in futuristic garb in a digitized setting with neon pyramids and other vivid imagery. The trailer comes days before ABBA releases their new album, and first in 40 years, Voyage (Universal Music Group), on Nov. 5.

Videos by American Songwriter

The group first revealed their reunion in September along with a new website, upcoming concerts beginning spring 2022, and new singles “I Still Have Faith in You,” “Don’t Shut Me Down” and a recent third “ Just a Notion ,” a song the group originally recorded in 1978 for their sixth album  Voulez-Vous  in 1979 that never made the cut.

“We took a break in the spring of 1982 and now we’ve decided it’s time to end it,” said ABBA said in a statement in September.

abba voyage tour australia 2022

Along with the release of Voyage, ABBA’s concert series kicks off in London on May 27, 2022, and features the foursome in their avatar forms, or “ABBAtars” (circa 1979), along with a 10-piece live band, at the custom-built “ABBA Arena” at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Producer Ludvig Andersson (Benny’s son) recently explained how the avatars “came to life.”

“Agnetha, Frida, Benny, and Björn got on a stage in front of 160 cameras and almost as many VFX geniuses and they performed every song in this show to perfection over five weeks, capturing every mannerism, every emotion,” said Andersson. “When you see this show it is not a ‘version of’, or a ‘copy of’, it is actually them.”

ABBA fans around the world can rejoice as it has been confirmed that the 'Voyage' avatar concert by the legendary Swedish pop group will be going on a global tour. The announcement was made by Universal Music Group chairman, Sir Lucian Grainge, during an earnings call for the company.

The 'Voyage' avatar concert features ABBA's four members, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, appearing as digital avatars (dubbed 'ABBAtars'). A groundbreaking experience for fans of the long defunct Swedish band, the concerts kicked off in May 2022 at a purpose-built venue at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London, officially called the ABBA Arena.

Dates are have been extended until January 2024, with the possibility to further extend the shows up until April 2026.

The 'Super Trouper' hitmakers have previously teased they are planning to use their concert holograms for "exciting new things" in the future.

“If you are an ABBA fan, who loyally has stuck with us for many years," said the band, "our hope is you will see the Abba-tars as agents in the new story, which may lead to exciting new things in the future."
