Something's wrong with nana.

With its keen eye on the most sinister fears of our childhoods, The Visit proves once again that horror is where writer, director and producer M. Night Shyamalan should set up camp. It’s both an assured return to form for the filmmaker and a welcome spin on his usual formula, where comedy sits comfortably alongside genuine frights.

Ed Oxenbould and Olivia DeJonge play Tyler and Rebecca Jamison, young siblings travelling to rural Pennsylvania to meet their estranged grandparents for the first time, much to the distress of Kathryn Hahn’s single mother. An aspiring filmmaker with a big heart, Rebecca wants to document the whole thing as a form of therapy for her mum, whose reasons for the bad blood with her parents remain a tightly-kept secret.

Still, The Visit is great fun. It’s genuinely funny while still managing to tap into our dark fears of the familiar becoming terrifyingly unfamiliar, of sweet turning suddenly sour. It’s also Shyamalan’s best film in years, and should be celebrated as such.

The Visit is a video game created by Molkman and Majus Arts for Kongregate and Newgrounds in 2012. In it, you play as a nameless man who has to get to his ladyfriend while avoiding crabs.

This game provides the following tropes:

• Deconstruction Game : Of jumping on enemies in video games.
• Five-Second Foreshadowing : You'll notice something is amiss when touching a crab doesn't deal any damage, hinting that they're not malicious and what will happen if you do stomp on one.
• High-Voltage Death : In the worst ending, the main character dies on an electric chair.
• Great Guy: The Golden Ending . He kills no crabs and reaches the house.
• Forgiven: A Bittersweet Ending . He kills a crab, chooses the sorry response, apologises and reaches the house.
• Bad Person: A Downer Ending . He kills a crab, chooses the rude response but doesn't destroy the funeral and reaches the house.
• This ending has two variations depending on the response he chose at the trial. If the hero was sorry, the cat will try to console him; otherwise, it will scratch him and leave.
• Rascal On The Run: A Bittersweet Ending . He kills a crab, and escapes the court via the window on the right.
• Horrible Person: A really Downer Ending . He kills a crab, jumps on a lamp, and kills the judge.

The Ending Of The Visit Explained

Contains spoilers for  The Visit

M. Night Shyamalan is notorious for using dramatic twists towards the endings of his films, some of which are pulled off perfectly and add an extra layer of depth to a sprawling story (hello, Split ). Some of the director's other offerings simply keep the audience on their toes rather than having any extra subtext or hidden meaning. Shyamalan's 2015 found-footage horror-comedy  The Visit , which he wrote and directed, definitely fits in the latter category, aiming for style over substance.

The Visit follows 15-year-old Becca Jamison (Olivia DeJonge) and her 13-year-old brother Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) when they spend the week with their mother's estranged parents, who live in another town. Loretta (played by WandaVision 's Kathryn Hahn ) never explained to her children why she separated herself away from her parents, but clearly hopes the weekend could help bring the family back together.

Although The Visit occasionally toys with themes of abandonment and fear of the unknown, it wasn't particularly well-received by critics on its initial release, as many struggled with its bizarre comedic tone in the found-footage style. So, after Tyler and his camera record a number of disturbing occurrences like Nana (Deanna Dunagan) projectile-vomiting in the middle of the night and discovering "Pop Pop"'s (Peter McRobbie) mountain of used diapers, it soon becomes clear that something isn't right with the grandparents.

The Visit's twist plays on expectations

Because Shyamalan sets up the idea of the separation between Loretta and her parents very early on — and doesn't show their faces before Becca and Tyler meet them — the film automatically creates a false sense of security. Even more so since the found-footage style restricts the use of typical exposition methods like flashbacks or other scenes which would indicate that Nana and Pop Pop aren't who they say they are. Audiences have no reason to expect that they're actually two escapees from a local psychiatric facility.

The pieces all come together once Becca discovers her  real grandparents' corpses in the basement, along with some uniforms from the psychiatric hospital. It confirms "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" escaped from the institution and murdered the Jamisons because they were a similar age, making it easy to hide their whereabouts from the authorities. And they would've gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling kids.)

However, after a video call from Loretta reveals that the pair aren't her parents, the children are forced to keep up appearances — but the unhinged duo start to taunt the siblings. Tyler in particular is forced to face his fear of germs as "Pop Pop" wipes dirty diapers in his face. The germophobia is something Shyamalan threads through Tyler's character throughout The Visit,  and the encounter with "Pop Pop" is a basic attempt of showing he's gone through some kind of trial-by-fire to get over his fears.

But the Jamison kids don't take things lying down: They fight back in vicious fashion — a subversion of yet another expectation that young teens might would wait for adults or law enforcement officers to arrive before doing away with their tormentors.

Its real message is about reconciliation

By the time Becca stabs "Nana" to death and Tyler has repeatedly slammed "Pop-Pop"'s head with the refrigerator door, their mother and the police do arrive to pick up the pieces. In a last-ditch attempt at adding an emotional undertone, Shyamalan reveals Loretta left home after a huge argument with her parents. She hit her mother, and her father hit her in return. But Loretta explains that reconciliation was always on the table if she had stopped being so stubborn and just reached out. One could take a domino-effect perspective and even say that Loretta's stubbornness about not reconnecting and her sustained distance from her parents put them in exactly the vulnerable position they needed to be for "Nana" and "Pop-Pop" to murder them. 

Loretta's confession actually mirrors something "Pop-Pop" told Tyler (before his run-in with the refrigerator door): that he and "Nana" wanted to spend one week as a normal family before dying. They should've thought about that before murdering a pair of innocent grandparents, but here we are. 

So, is The Visit  trying to say that if we don't keep our families together, they'll be replaced by imposters and terrify our children? Well, probably not. The Visit tries to deliver a message about breaking away from old habits, working through your fears, and stop being so stubborn over arguments that don't have any consequences in the long-run. Whether it actually sticks the landing on all of those points is still up for debate.

Minecraft Reveals 2024 April's Fool Snapshot Update Patch Notes

Minecraft adds new mobs, biomes, and a plethora of things as part of its Poisonous Potato Snapshot to celebrate April Fools Day.

• Minecraft's latest April Fools' update focuses on Poisonous Potatoes, adding humorous touches like green rain and a Poisonous Potato armor set.
• Players can explore the Poisonous Potato Dimension, encounter the boss Mega Spud, and craft new gadgets like the Lashing Potato grappling hook.
• While fans are impressed by the expansive update, some are disappointed that long-requested items were added as pranks and not included in the main game.

Minecraft's highly anticipated April Fools' Day update is here, and the developers have themed it around Poisonous Potatoes. Mojang Studios is known for its funky updates on April 1 every year, and this time around its focus seems to be on an item that is considered to be the most useless in Minecraft .

Minecraft players are eagerly waiting for the next major update, 1.21, to be released later this year. From new blocks to mobs and dungeons, there is plenty to look forward to. To gear up for the massive update, Mojang has been releasing snapshots to make incremental tweaks to Minecraft . For instance, the recently released Minecraft Snapshot 24w13a made a series of exciting changes to the Mace, adding the ability to enhance it with existing and new enchantments, which made it even more powerful. Now, fans are getting a chance to try out one of the most hilarious Minecraft updates Mojang has released in recent times.

Minecraft Player Builds Playable Tetris Using Redstone

In a new blog post , Mojang has revealed the complete patch notes of the Poisonous Potato update. A plethora of things in the game have given a poisonous potato theme including but not limited to blocks, mobs, and even paintings. Perhaps one of the funniest parts of the update is the full Poisonous Potato armor set, which when equipped, will destroy nearby mobs due to its poisonous effects. Items like couches and lamps have also been given a poisonous touch. In fact, even Minecraft's weather effects didn't get spared, as rain has been turned green in the snapshot.

There is also a Poisonous Potato dimension along with five new Minecraft biomes . The new dimension can be accessed through the Potato Portal, which can be unlocked by placing a Poisonous Potato on a pedestal. That's not all, as players will also be able to encounter a new boss named Mega Spud, Potatolord of the Fried Legion.

One of the most requested items has been a Frying Table, and the snapshot allows players to craft an array of items using Poisonous Potatoes. However, the biggest highlight of the update has been the gadgets. Minecraft fans have been asking for a grappling hook for quite a while now, and this update turns it into reality by adding the Lashing Potato. There is also a Potato Peeler that deals extra damage to Potato mobs. Like every year, Mojang Studios has once again impressed the community with how expansive the April Fool's update is. However, this time around, fans are a bit disappointed considering that several of their much-requested items have been added as part of a prank, but were never released in Minecraft .

Warriors hope to end home struggles when Mavs visit

The Golden State Warriors return to their San Francisco house of horrors when they host the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday night in a matchup of teams locked in tight battles for postseason position.

The Warriors (40-34) have won four in a row as they attempt to fend off the charging Houston Rockets for the final play-in spot in the Western Conference while also trying to move up in the standings.

Those four wins all came on the road, where the Warriors have fashioned an impressive 22-15 record. They have won 14 of their past 17 games away from home.

Unfortunately for Golden State, it has not had that level of success at home, where the Warriors have lost five of their past seven and, at 18-19, need a win on Tuesday just to get back to the break-even mark.

"It's bizarre," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "A year ago, it was the complete opposite. We were 33-8 at home and 0-41 on the road or so. So, who knows? It's hard to explain these things.

"The main thing is we're playing well right now. We're in a pretty good groove. We're coming along well."

Golden State completed a 4-1 road trip with a 117-113 win at San Antonio on Sunday that featured a turn-back-the-clock performance by Draymond Green. In a matchup with the league's top shot-blocker, Victor Wembanyama, Green made 8 of 9 shots from the floor en route to 21 points that he complemented with 11 assists, six rebounds, six steals and a block.

The Warriors hope Green can be a difference-maker against the Mavericks (45-29) after he missed this season's previous meetings, two games Dallas won by 10 points apiece.

The most recent head-to-head was March 13, a contest Stephen Curry also missed as the Mavericks rode 23 points from Kyrie Irving and 21 from Luka Doncic to a 109-99 home win.

That victory came as part of a four-game winning streak that ended with a 126-119 loss at Oklahoma City the night after the Golden State game. Dallas has since run up seven straight wins, including four in a row to begin a five-game trip.

The Mavericks began their journey with a win at Utah on March 25, then followed that with a 132-96 shellacking of the Sacramento Kings in the California capital on the second night of a back-to-back.

The team then had two days off in Sacramento, leading to a 107-103 triumph that completed a doubleheader sweep, before heading to Texas to dispose of the Houston Rockets 125-107 on Sunday.

Now it's back to California for one game before being Texas-bound again for a three-game homestand that tips off on Thursday and features a rematch with the Warriors on Friday.

The Mavericks have played 10 of their past 11 games in a different city than the previous outing. That will become 11 of 12 in San Francisco, then 12 of 13 on Thursday in Dallas.

The only time the Mavericks have played at the same site two games in a row during that stretch was in Sacramento.

"I miss home now," Doncic said after a 47-point explosion in Houston. "It has been the longest road trip ever."
