KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

The Kimberley Expedition Port Highlights

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac® – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

Featured Included Shore Excursions

Lagoon cruises, on shore guided walks, apricot farm + motor museum tour, an Australian themed bush barbeque with live entertainment and the Captain's Dinner make up some of the highlights of this extravagant 5 night indulgence cruise (more details on cruise highlights below).

For when you choose to retire to the private contemporary ensuite accommodation provided, all cabins onboard feature stunning river views so you can stay immersed in the beauty of nature.

Night cruising

Night cruising is a feature of all Proud Mary cruises. The Proud Mary’s powerful flood lights illuminate the graceful willows and dark waters as you cruise.

Ecological walks

Here you’ll discover the importance of flood plains to the river system. You will also see some of the last remaining evidence of ancient Aboriginal civilization, a huge canoe tree bearing the scar where bark was taken to make a canoe. Learn about Moorundie Creek, named after the Aboriginal tribe that lived here. In native dialect ‘moorundie’ means sand or sandy and is the site where the history of the area began in 1840, when explorer Edward John Eyre established a village named Sturt after the famous explorer navigator.

Explore ancient archaeological sites

Visit the site of ancient aboriginal rock art where your local indigenous guide will explain their meaning and significance. Note: some times and activities may be subject to change without notice

7pm You are welcomed aboard by the friendly Proud Mary crew. Having settled into your comfortable, river-view cabin, you may like to join fellow passengers in the Dining Room & enjoy a drink before a delicious hot supper is served. Proud Mary cruises to its overnight mooring point and your Captain introduces the crew. Cruising the river at night is a magical experience and the Proud Mary’s powerful floodlights illuminate the graceful willows and dark waters as you glide past. This is an excellent opportunity to see the River environment from a completely different perspective and may allow you to view some of the nocturnal wildlife, especially birds such as night herons, owls, and coots.

10:00pm Proud Mary ties up at our overnight mooring, Woodlane, for a night of peace and tranquillity in the Australia bush.

11.30pm Dining Room is closed.

7am Dining Room opens. Tea, coffee and continental breakfast available.

8am Proud Mary departs Woodlane and continues upstream. You will pass huge lagoons teeming with birdlife. During floods, these inland lagoons were so immense that, in the early riverboat days, captains could not find true channels. In the early 1900s, riverboat captains planted willow trees along the banks to clearly mark the main river channel. Today these willows provide the perfect haven for the prolific birdlife.

8-8.45am This morning you will enjoy a delicious cooked breakfast while cruising through Mypolonga, Caloote and Ponde. Your appetite will be stimulated by the magnificent scenery you’ll pass.

10am Mid-morning Proud Mary arrives in picturesque Mannum, inhabited prior to white settlement by the Narraltie aboriginal tribe. The name Mannum can be translated as “the place of many ducks”. Here you’ll board a waiting coach for a history tour of this small township that has played a significant role in the development of South Australia. Captain William Randell launched the first paddle steamer, the “Mary Ann”, on the Murray River in 1853. By the late 1880s, there were over 250 paddle steamers and barges trading on the Murray River and Mannum became an industrious inland port. On the tour, you will re-trace the colourful history of several pioneering families whose efforts shaped the successful development of this region. Your tour includes a visit to the Mannum Dock museum in Mannum, where you will find a fascinating collection of historical memorabilia. Mannum is also famous as the site of the production of the first steam car in Australia with a differential, built by the Shearer brothers.

1pm The vessel departs Mannum. Lunch is served aboard as you cruise upstream past Younghusband, Teal Flat, lovely Lake Carlet, Bowhill, Purnong and onto Walker Flat. The menu may include dishes such as Roast Chicken Maryland vegetables and a wild mushroom sauce or Pork Cutlet with Yam Mash, fabulous flavours to complement the superb scenery gliding by on both sides of the Proud Mary.

6.15pm Proud Mary moors at Walker Flat. The bird and wildlife here is prolific, including wallabies, wild ducks and bush turkeys. The towering cliffs are superb and provide a majestic backdrop to the tranquillity of cruising Australia’s most famous river. This evening is “Australiana Night” and dinner will feature the use of some traditional bush foods such as emu, kangaroo, damper bread and fresh water crustaceans, with flavours of lemon myrtle, wild bush tomatoes and quandongs. These delicious dishes are created by our resident chefs to showcase Australia’s continually evolving cuisine. You might be offered Tasmanian Scallops with lemon couscous, Pepper Leaf Kangaroo Medallions, Northern Territory Barramundi or a Porterhouse Steak with Bush Tomato chutney. Join our expert ecologist for a Nocturnal Discovery Tour. This tour provides an insight into the abundant local wildlife, including South Australia’s fauna emblem, the Southern Hairy Nosed Wombat. These delightful creatures are found only in a limited area on the western side of the river. It’s rare to see them in the wild but you’ll board a coach to take you to their warrens and hopefully you’ll see one or two active in the evening light, as well as other nocturnal wildlife.

7.00am Proud Mary departs Walker Flat and continues upstream. Dining Room opens. Tea, coffee and continental breakfast available.

8-8.45am Another hearty breakfast is served while cruising through Wongulla where, some fifty years ago, men found the fossil of a 20 million year old shark. Nildottie and Big Bend townships to follow. There’s something very satisfying about enjoying a good breakfast while you glide by magnificent scenery and Big Bend is famous for its soaring ochre cliffs.

9.15am A display of souvenirs is available in the Dining Room for you to browse through and purchase.

9.30am Feeling peckish? Morning Tea is available in the Dining Room. Join the Captain in the Dining Room for a complete run-down on the story of Murray River including its history, current water usage practices and the ecology of this vital water source. You can also watch a video about the famous 1956 floods that devastated the area.

11am Proud Mary arrives at the pioneering township of Swan Reach. The settlement was originally the port of the large Portee Sheep Station and was settled as a township in 1899. Your local guide will take you to visit the Swan Reach Museum which is housed in the original school building that was built in 1917; the museum’s collection focuses on the history of education and the social history of the area.

12pm Re-join the Proud Mary for another delicious lunch, whilst moored in the township of Swan Reach

1pm Proud Mary coach will be waiting ready for your visit Costa Brothers Almond Farm with your local guide. The almond industry is the fastest growing horticulture crop in Australia. Discover how this state of the art almond farm uses water-recycling technology to limit its direct impact on the river system and help secure the diverse ecosystem of the river. From here your guide will take you to Blanchetown, site of the Lock and Weir No 1. The river is dammed by 13 locks built to facilitate the early riverboat trade. Water cascades over the lock creating an excellent feeding place for birdlife. Pelicans and dozens of species of water birds can be seen diving in the water to feed.

4.30pm Re-board Proud Mary ready to depart Blanchetown and set off for your overnight mooring position at Sugar Shack.

6.30pm  Tonight, enjoy a delicious dinner finished off with one of the home-style desserts Proud Mary’s chefs are famous for. Whilst you dine, your evening cruise takes you to your overnight mooring spot of Sugar Shack. Sugar Shack is part of the River Murray International Dark Sky Reserve which is an astronomer’s paradise. The unpolluted skies and isolation from artificial light sources make the park one of the best places on earth to gaze at the stars. Your Captain will steer closer to the bank this evening so you can take full advantage of the LED floodlights that illuminate the towering river redgums and perhaps watch the possums as they scamper through the branches. The River takes on a wonderfully moody and atmospheric quality at night providing a magical backdrop as you drift by.

7.30pm Secure at Sugar Shack.

7.45pm Trivia Night – Let the games begin!

11.30pm Dining Room closes. Enjoy a peaceful night surrounded by stars and the sounds of the Australian bush.

7am Dining Room opens. Tea, coffee and continental breakfast is available. This morning you will wake up in one of the most unspoilt and picturesque areas of the River Murray. Make sure you go out on deck to immerse yourself in the surroundings and experience the peace of the riverside environment.

8-8.45am Another hearty cooked breakfast is available for you, or perhaps you might like a lighter Continental option this morning. The choice is yours, maybe both!?

9am This morning provides another unique experience with an absorbing ecological walk around Sugar Shack. Here you’ll discover the importance of flood plains to the river system. The history of the area began in 1840, when explorer Edward John Eyre established a village named Sturt after the famous explorer navigator.

9.45am Proud Mary departs Sugar Shack and cruises downstream towards Swan Reach, passing magnificent lagoons teeming with birdlife, awesome cliffs reaching for the sky and spectacular scenery as far as the eyes can see. Throughout your cruise you can listen to the informative commentary that occurs from time to time about the history of the areas you pass through and the boats that used to work there.

10.45am We’ll tie up briefly at Swan Reach, a visit to the Arts and Craft shop along with the motor museum. Here you will be able to view an amazing collection of Australian and International vehicles.

1pm Depart Swan Reach.

1.30pm  Lunch is served, which today may focus on traditional fish and chips, using fresh Australian seafood or, perhaps, the famous 12-hour marinated pork chops.

2.30pm This afternoon the vessel ties up alongside the towering cliffs of Big Bend, the tallest anywhere along the River. This is a truly majestic landscape providing definite photo opportunities. A highlight of your expedition is a small boat cruise through the lagoons and inlets, led by our expert ecologist. There are some 320 species of birdlife in this area and, with the aid of binoculars and your well-informed guide, you will study at close range the prolific birdlife and wildlife of the region including kangaroos, wombats, emus, echidnas and goannas. Your flat-bottom boat allows you to get right up to the riverside cliffs to see nesting birds and examine the geology of the landscape including the many exposed fossils.

5.30pm Bar opens on shore.

6.00pm This evening delivers another rewarding experience… a traditional Aussie barbeque prepared by our chefs and eaten under a canopy of stars amidst the restful sounds of the nearby river. Afterwards, enjoy an evening’s entertainment around a blazing campfire, provided by our resident musician. Request a song and sing along into the night as the stars of the Australian sky hover above, almost close enough to touch.

11.30pm Dining Room closes. Enjoy another quiet night’s sleep in the tranquil Australian bush.

7am Dining Room opens. Tea, coffee and breakfast available. Early this morning, the Proud Mary departs Big Bend and heads towards Ngaut Ngaut. Enjoy your breakfast as you watch the sun climb over the towering cliffs, creating marvellous changes of colour in the sandstone and ochre hues.

8.00am Disembark at Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal conservation site for a tour of one of the oldest archaeological digs in Australia. This is one of the definite highlights of your cruise. Take the boardwalk to the site of ancient aboriginal rock art where your local indigenous guide will explain their meaning and significance. Ngaut Ngaut was a major meeting place for the tribes of the area and you’ll see where they prepared and cooked food at a ceremonial site that dates back thousands of years. The view from the top of the cliffs is astonishing with vistas that stretch for miles in every direction.

10.00am Depart Ngaut Ngaut.

10.30am Join your fellow passengers, some of whom will have probably become friends by now, in the Dining Room to view an interesting and informative documentary that traces the Murray River from its source high in the Snowy Mountains right to its entry to the sea in the Coorong. The documentary explains the intricacies of the River environment and why the Murray is one of the great rivers of the world. You’ll learn about Australia’s greatest river landscapes and the people that call the River home while we cruise through Krohns Landing, Sabaruma and Walker Flat.

12.30pm Lunch is served featuring another of our chefs’ delicious creations which you can enjoy as we cruise through Bowhill, Teal Flat, Younghusband and Pellaring Reach. It’s a wonderfully relaxing afternoon. Time to lay back and enjoy the peace that surrounds you as you watch the changing views glide by.

4.30pm Arrive at Mannum. Take the opportunity to enjoy some free time in this delightful town or rest up ahead of the Captain’s Dinner this evening.

6.15pm Gather in the Dining Room to enjoy a complimentary champagne or cocktail prior to dinner.

6.45pm The culinary highlight of your cruise is the silver service Captain’s Dinner, a five-course menu of choice featuring mouth-watering dishes based on modern Australian cuisine. Enjoy the food, wine and atmosphere with your fellow passengers as the Captain visits every table and chats. It’s a chance to dress up a little and enjoy a gorgeous formal dinner.

11.30pm Dining Room closes.

7am Dining Room opens. Tea, coffee and continental breakfast available.

8am Depart Mannum. Cruise through Ponde, Caloote and Wall Flat to Woodlane.

8.30am Enjoy another magnificent cooked breakfast this morning as you prepare to visit the Mypolonga region, consisting of Aussie Apricots, Revolution Motor Museum and the historic Mypolonga area school.

10.00am Arrive at Woodlane to board the waiting coach for your tour of the historic Mypolonga Area School. Mypolonga is a small rural school situated close to the banks of the Murray River between Murray Bridge and Mannum, with around 140 students. This school presents students and staff with views of farming lands, orchards, vineyards, the beautiful river red gums which line the river and the ochre coloured cliffs which glow in the afternoon light.

11.00am Arrive at Aussie Apricots and discover a 3rd generation family run orchard. The orchard is on the beautiful River Murray at Mypolonga about 15km's from Murray Bridge. They grow, hand pick & cut the fruit by hand & machine. We sun dry all of our fruit & then the apricots are sized when dry. When the apricots are required we wash & hand process the apricots into confectionary, jams & chutneys.

11.30am Rev your Engines! Right next to the Apricot farm is the Revolution Motor Museum where you will be taken on a private tour to see a wide range of American Muscle Cars, Bikes and stationery engines all on display. This museum has South Australia first registered taxi and is filled with history and beauty, a must for all to see.

1pm Return to Proud Mary and enjoy another delicious lunch as you depart Woodlane and cruise through Mypolonga, Sunnyside, Mundurra and Willowbanks.

4pm Tie up at Murray Bridge. We say goodbye and thank you for joining us on this exploration of the Murray River and we hope we might see you again in the future to enjoy another relaxing and immersing holiday along Australia’s greatest river.

River Cruise Lines

Why your next holiday should be a river cruise.

Experience the wonders of the world from a unique point of view on an exceptional river cruise. Boasting all the benefits of a luxurious ocean cruise – all-inclusive amenities, thoughtful service, lavishly designed staterooms and suites – but with the unique perk of being close to land! With an overabundance of pristine waterways across the world to glide through, there is a near-endless supply of enticing river cruise itineraries to choose from.

Experiencing new cultures, visiting historical sites, and dining on delightful regional cuisine, river cruises allow you to jump from one exceptional memory to the next in mere moments. Scroll down and discover why your next exciting adventure needs to be on a river cruise.

Unique itineraries at outstanding locations

Holiday planners are spoilt for choice when deciding where to go for a river cruise, with cruise lines hosting alluring itineraries across the globe. Head to Europe, the hub of river cruising, with enchanting rivers like the Rhine, Danube, Douro and more whisking travellers through stunning scenery and sublime cities. For something more tropical, adventurers can sail through the Amazon River in Brazil and Peru or up the Mekong River in Southeast Asia. No matter the destination, a river cruise will allow you to encounter inspiring new cultures and see gorgeous natural landscapes at every point of the journey.

Extraordinary list of inclusions in your fare

The outstanding benefit of river cruises is that most cruise lines offer almost everything complimentary with your cruise fare. From non-alcoholic beverages, most dining options, and shore excursions, river cruise lines endeavour to promise that your holiday is stress-free at all times. This in turn ensures that you can easily book your river cruise and not worry too much about additional costs once you hop onboard.

Immersive exploration your own way

A concern that many travellers might have when planning their next trip is the restrictiveness of a ship and the sometimes limited time you spend in port. Thankfully, most river cruise lines offer plenty of time once docked in conjunction with a variety of shore excursions for different styles of exploration. Whether you want to join a simple walking tour through a city or a more intensive biking trail through the countryside, your style of adventure is more than accounted for. Moreover, with ample time in port, you can sightsee at your own pace, perfect for those who want to take their time at each destination.

Forget the logistics!

A common problem planning a holiday through wondrous regions such as Europe and Asia is the logistics of moving through the area. From choosing the right accommodation, the best form of transport, to selecting a dining option that pleases everyone’s palates, organising all of this for an entire trip can be extremely daunting! River cruises take all of this drama and stress away. You’ll only need to unpack once, transport is naturally all sorted, and the dining options are aplenty. If you’re worried about travelling for the first time in Asia or just want to relax for your fiftieth time in Europe, there is no better choice than a river cruise.

Adventure awaits with a River Cruise!

While you might know which cruise line to pick and what destination you plan to adventure through, finding the right sailing might prove a little confusing. If you do have any questions or queries, don’t hesitate to enquire with us and we will gladly resolve any problem you have. We have a team of experienced cruise specialists who work tirelessly to ensure you have the right river cruise best suited to you!

The 11 Best Luxury Cruise Lines, According to T+L's Experts

These luxury cruise lines offer stunning suites, fine dining, and exceptional itineraries.

Meena Thiruvengadam is a lifelong traveler and veteran journalist who has visited more than 50 countries across six continents. Her writing has appeared in The Wall Street Journal , Departures , TripSavvy , and other publications.

luxury river cruise australia

Cruising is back — and you might even say it's better than ever. "Vacations at sea are suddenly one of the biggest things in travel," Travel + Leisure cruise expert Paul Brady reported recently, as summer air travel is looking progressively messier but the cruise industry continues to stabilize post-pandemic. For those looking to plan a cruise, whether it's a last-minute trip for the summer or a 2024 around-the-world cruise, we've narrowed down the best luxury cruise lines to ferry you to some of the world's most mesmerizing destinations in comfort. Here, our favorite luxury cruise lines in the world.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

When this luxury cruise line says it's all-inclusive, it's not overstating. Everything from shore excursions, Wi-Fi, and laundry to gratuities, top-shelf liquor, and business-class international flights are included with Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' fares. While each luxurious suite features ocean views, nothing beats the view from the epic 4,000-square-foot, two-bedroom Regent Suite, which has two wraparound balconies, three walk-in closets, two Picasso lithographs, and a grand piano.

For the best in-suite views, book a room at the back of the ship, Kelly Cochrane, executive chef of Regent Seven Seas Cruises tells T+L.

Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises has just seven ships, but the debut of the brand-new Oceania Vista catapults this cruise line into the luxury division. The cruise line's relatively new Go Local shore excursions for small groups bring travelers to under-the-radar destinations, T+L contributing editor and long-time cruiser Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon reported recently. Her 2022 cruise on Riviera included 70 excursions "from canoeing Croatia’s Cetina River to cooking classes in Athens."

If you've ever dreamed of having your own butler, Silversea is the luxury cruise line for you. In fact, Silversea's butlers take white-glove service to a whole new level — they'll handle your laundry with more care than you do, scour port towns to find your favorite tastes of home, and even help you pack and unpack your suitcase. Further, Silversea's new culinary program, nicknamed S.A.L.T. (for Sea and Land Taste), brings the taste of destinations on board through cooking classes. Of course, there's no need to cook for yourself aboard a Silversea ship, as each one features several restaurants with multi-course menus to whet your appetite every night.

Viking Cruises

Viking Cruises is a river and ocean cruise line that recently added expedition sailings and the Great Lakes trips to its repertoire. "T+L readers rave about the consistency of Viking's vessels and their Scandinavian design," cruise expert Fran Golden reported when Viking once again topped T+L's World's Best Awards last year. Viking came in at No. 1 in T+L's best mid-size ship category and river cruise category. Golden said the WBA Hall of Fame honoree's 50 river "longships" are "light-filled floating boutique hotels."

Laureen Robert / Courtesy of Ponant

French luxury cruise line Ponant aims to make passengers feel as if they're traveling on their own private yachts. Guests enjoy Ladurée macarons, Veuve Clicquot Champagne, and luxurious Hermès bath products on board. Each of the company's ships features an onboard spa with massage cabins and either a Turkish bath or sauna. Ponant's luxurious small ships sail to remote destinations like Antarctica, incorporating once-in-a-lifetime experiences such as eclipse spotting from the edge of the earth. The company also partners with Smithsonian and Disney on certain sailings.

Seabourn cruises to all seven continents, and most recently launched Seabourn Venture , "marking the first time the Carnival Corporation–owned luxury cruise line will offer adventurous sailings on an expedition ship built for extreme environments," Brady reported. (The sibling ship to Venture , Seabourn Pursuit arrives later this year.) The World's Best Award-winning cruise line has all-suite ships and "is known for its onboard service and over-the-top food including complimentary caviar and Thomas Keller steakhouses on ships such as the  Seabourn Ovation, " Brady said.

Windstar Cruises

Windstar Cruises ' luxury small ships call on 150 ports throughout Europe, Central America, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, and there's no way you'll go hungry on the journey. Exquisite onboard menus have been designed by acclaimed chefs from Michelin-starred restaurants. (You'll have to pay extra for alcohol, but all meals and a Windstar signature onboard barbecue — a feast of whole suckling pig, shrimp brochette, and more — are included.) The cruise line is not only a T+L World's Best Awards Hall of Fame honoree, it has a "long-standing partnership with the James Beard Foundation ," Brady reported, and regularly brings chefs on board for culinary-focused sailings. Yes, chef.

Courtesy of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

Whether it's a river or an ocean you want to cruise, Scenic can take you there in style. The luxury cruise line operates river cruises in Europe and Asia, while ocean cruises on Scenic Eclipse (and the forthcoming Scenic Eclipse II ) can take guests to Antarctica, the Arctic, Australia, South America, and Greenland, among other coveted destinations. On board, you'll find fine dining, expansive spas and fitness facilities, and butler service.

Cunard Line

Jonathan Atkin / Courtesy of Cunard Line

This British luxury cruise line is known for its transatlantic service, which also transports pets between its headquarters in Southampton, England, and New York City. Cunard operates three ships with a fourth in the works, though only the Queen Mary 2 sails the transatlantic route. It's a cruise line that takes formality seriously; white-gloved waiters serve afternoon tea each day at 3:30 p.m. State rooms include 24-hour room service and evening turndown service with chocolates. Don't forget your tux, the gala nights are black tie.

Paul Gauguin Cruises

Roger Paperno / Courtesy of Paul Gauguin Cruises

Paul Gauguin Cruises operates just one ship, but it is exquisite, hosting 330 guests and sailing only in the South Pacific to destinations like Tahiti, Fiji, Tonga, and the Cook Islands. The ship is small enough to access private ports at remote beaches and take travelers well off the beaten path. Named the best small-ship ocean cruise line in T+L's 2022 World's Best Awards, Golden said the line is known for Tahitian-inspired massage techniques in the onboard spa and noted that cruisers particularly love the wonderful staff.

Celebrity Cruises

Steve Dunlop / Courtesy of Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises ' new Edge Series ships are taking things up a notch. Celebrity's signature Iconic Suites on board the Celebrity Edge and Apex offer panoramic views from above the ship's bridge; each suite boasts more than 2,500 square feet of space, including expansive 690-square-foot terraces, and comes with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Celebrity Beyond , which debuted in 2022, accommodates 3,260 guests has 32 bars and restaurants, like Le Voyage by chef Daniel Boulud, and two-story villas on board. Beyond 's sibling ship, Ascent , will be delivered later this year.

World’s best luxury river cruise lines

Signature Luxury Travel & Style has assembled a panel of 19 travel industry insiders and cruise experts to identify the best river cruise lines in the world.

Whether you’re cruising the history-rich rivers of Europe, experiencing the vibrant bustling of everyday life along Vietnam’s Mekong River or drinking in the ancient wonders of Egypt while meandering down the Nile, river cruising has a wealth of experiences on offer.

What is the Signature Luxury Travel & Style Cruise Awards?

Signature Luxury Travel & Style is celebrating the best and brightest of the river cruise industry as part of our 2023 Luxury Cruise Awards. In our fifth annual awards, we pay tribute to the top cruise lines, ships and operators in the industry.

How are the Luxury Cruise Awards judged?

Our annual Luxury Cruise Awards are judged by a panel of 19 leading luxury cruise experts and travel advisors who rate major cruise lines across 11 key categories, including suites, service, dining, wellness, itineraries and shore excursions. Each cruise line is awarded points that are tallied to determine the overall winners.

Scenic Spirit on a river cruise

World’s best luxury river cruises: Europe

1. uniworld boutique river cruises.

Uniworld takes out the top prize, which should be no surprise. With ships designed like luxury hotels, Uniworld guests are able to take in the fairytale views of Europe’s waterways in absolute style. Sailing along the Danube River on Uniworld’s SS Beatrice is an inspiring and elegant affair, with the marble, Murano glass and handmade upholstery all adding to the opulent ambience – an experience not to be missed.

Coming in a close second is Tauck for its beautifully designed ships, which are the epitome of intimacy and luxury. A river cruise with Tauck will take you to some of Europe’s most interesting and beguiling ports. For instance, guests on Tauck’s custom-designed MS Andorinha tour the vibrant and historic quintas and villages along Portugal’s picturesque Douro River.

3. Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

The Australian-founded Scenic is a trendsetter when it comes to river cruising, giving guests access to truly amazing itineraries and destinations. Scenic Sapphire and Diamond sail the rivers of France and boast Scenic’s signature spacious suites with large private balconies.

Finalists: AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Viking Cruises

The sun deck pool on board MS Andorinha

World’s best luxury river cruises: rest of the world

Uniworld again comes out on top due to its unbeatable mix of ships that have been specially designed by hoteliers – and the incredible destinations that they sail to. When river cruising in Egypt, guests onboard Uniworld’s SS Sphinx are immersed in their magnificent destination via art and design aboard the ship, which showcases Egyptian craftsmanship through stunning interior fabrics and furnishings.

2. Aqua Expeditions

Aqua’s incredible ships are designed by architectural firms, and there are few better ways to explore the world’s most remote reaches than aboard one. Its brand-new river vessel, Aqua Nera , was created by award-winning architects Noor Design and will allow guests to explore the captivating rivers of the Peruvian Amazon in comfort and style.

3. Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours

Scenic takes out third place for its new fleet of state-of-the-art vessels that take guests voyaging to beautiful parts of the world for culturally enriching experiences. See the landscapes of Vietnam and Cambodia on a Mekong River cruise with Scenic Spirit , a small ship with big personality and divine amenities.

Finalists: Belmond, Delfin Amazon Cruises, Sanctuary Retreats

The colours of dusk are best seen from the Aqua Nera pool deck

What is river cruising?

An adventure! A river cruise is a voyage along inland waterways, regularly stopping at ports for exploring along the way. While many river cruises last longer than a week, you can take shorter versions or even day cruises. Depending on the size of the ship, river cruises typically carry between 100 and 250 guests.

What are the benefits of river cruising?

River cruise ships are usually smaller than ocean vessels, which allows for access to smaller ports that rule out larger liners. It also means travellers can enjoy a more intimate affair. Another bonus? River cruises mean travellers only need to unpack once (so you avoid the hassle of all the packing and unpacking at different locations). You can also enjoy the perks of onboard amenities, such as restaurants, bars, gyms and spas.

Bold colours and patterns characterise Uniworld’s SS Sphinx river cruise ship

What are the best river cruises in Europe?

  • The Danube River is Europe’s longest river, and a popular choice for river cruisers. You can sail from Passau in Germany to Budapest in Hungary or take shorter trips along the picturesque river.
  • The Classic Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam in the Netherlands to Basel in Switzerland is also a winner, boasting enchanting views through forests, mountains and medieval villages.
  • Portugal’s ‘River of Gold’ cruise, which starts and ends in Porto and voyages along the Douro River, has guests exploring spectacular Baroque palaces, verdant vineyards and the World Heritage city of Salamanca in Spain.
  • And let’s not forget the wine lovers. If this is you, a Bordeaux river cruise – taking in two waterways, the Dordogne and Garonne rivers in Southwest France – is the ticket. You’ll visit world-renowned winemaking regions including Beaune in Burgundy and Hermitage and Chateauneuf-du-Pape in Provence.

Scenic Spirit on a river cruise tour

What are the best river cruises around the world?

There are too many to list here, but here are a few highlights.

  • The Yangtze is Asia’s longest river. Taking a cruise in China means marvelling at the jaw-dropping sights of the imposing mountain ranges and cavernous canyons of the Three Gorges.
  • The Ganges cruise in India is a truly mesmerising voyage from buzzing Kolkata to the spiritual heartland of Varanasi. This river cruise brings a captivating assault to the senses with dazzling sights of ornate temples, women in shimmering saris socialising as they do their washing by the water’s edge and mourners attending the funeral pyres along the banks of this holy river.
  • In Egypt, you’ll take a step back in time on a river cruise along the Nile where 4,000 years of history are on display. Most cruises snake their way from Luxor to Aswan, where guests visit historic villages and sacred sights, including ancient temples and royal tombs. Did we mention the stunning sunsets?

Why luxury cruises are ditching Australia

Virgin Voyages says Red Sea tensions are to blame for the cancellation of Resilient Lady's 2024-25  Australian season.

Andrea Black

Don't miss out on the headlines from Lifestyle. Followed categories will be added to My News.

First, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth pulled out of homeporting in Australia in 2025-26 in favour of sailing year-round in the Caribbean and Alaska, and now another major cruise line is set to chart a different course away from our shores – and even sooner.

I should have seen it as a sign as I scrolled the Virgin Voyages website looking to book a cruise for the next Australian season. I’d just stepped off a Resilient Lady sailing from Sydney to Burnie and back and loved it so much I wanted to check the prices for a girls’ getaway next summer. More like a luxury design resort than a cruise ship, this is the sort of sailing that first-time cruiser friends (who are ever-so-slightly sceptical) are likely to embrace. This would be the ship that convinces them that cruising is the way to travel. But there was no option to book any Australian sailings. Then came the news a few days later. Virgin Voyages, the same line that made such a splash debuting here just months ago – remember Richard Branson on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge? – wouldn’t be returning to our shores next season.

A visit to the Australian Museum in Sydney

Citing potential conflict escalations in the Red Sea over the next 12 months, Virgin Voyages has cancelled its 2024-25 season plans for Resilient Lady in Australian and New Zealand waters.

“Virgin Voyages was embraced by the Australia and New Zealand markets with a warm welcome and celebrated an extremely successful inaugural season – the love was mutual,” the press release stated. “To say that we are disappointed to have come to this tough conclusion is an understatement.”

Resilient Lady will instead spend the 2024-25 season sailing the Caribbean. Momentum is high but it looks like we’ll have to take the long haul to experience Virgin Voyages for the time being; there are ships based out of Athens and Barcelona. The cruise line said it was working through options to return to our region “once regional repositioning opportunities become more tenable”, which is to say coming back to Australia the long way via Africa rather than through the Red Sea would take too long, so it would not be as profitable for the cruise line.

More Coverage

luxury river cruise australia

Given the situation, perhaps we’ll see other lines opt for the Caribbean instead of Australian waters come October and November? They can avoid the Red Sea, they don’t have to travel as far and there’s certainly a big market for cruising in those turquoise waters.

According to Cruise Lines International Association, while some cruise lines are altering itineraries to avoid the Red Sea, it is likely the vast majority of sailings in Australia and New Zealand will be unaffected. “Each cruise line will conduct its own assessments based on their particular schedules and circumstances,” CLIA says.

But local cruise-lovers needn’t worry. We are fortunate in this region to have a diverse fleet, including year-round locally based ships, as well as vessels repositioning from Asia, Africa, the US and Alaska.

Oceania wants travelers to live on its new luxury cruise ship for 6 months while it sails to 43 countries. A trip starts at $60K — see what it'll be like.

  • Oceania announced a 180-day 2026 world cruise from Miami to 101 ports, starting at $59,700 a person.
  • The premium cruise brand tapped its new luxury ship, Vista , for the 43-country itinerary.
  • Oceania's 2024 world cruise set sail in January after it sold out in 30 minutes.

Insider Today

Oceania Cruises wants you to spend at least $59,700 — and 180 days — living on its newest cruise ship while it sails 360 degrees around the globe.

And if the itinerary's bookings are anything like the company's previous global sailings , this six-month cruise could sell out — fast. Bookings for this cruise officially open on March 13.

The brand's around-the-world itineraries have become wildly hyped over the last few years. In January, its most recent world cruise on the fully booked Insignia departed from Los Angeles on a similar 180-day, 96-port journey.

When reservations opened two years prior, that ship was sold out in 30 minutes. Oceania is a high-end brand of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

Looking ahead, Oceania’s 2026 global itinerary is set to be bigger, better, and on a newer ship.

The premium cruise line has frequently picked the 684-guest Insignia as its world cruise vessel of choice.

But this time, it's switching "ship" up: The company has tapped its newest vessel, the 1,200-guest Vista, for its 2026 itinerary. And it won't be a light trial run: The sailing is set to include 101 ports across 43 countries — and the cruise line says tours will hit 81 UNESCO World Heritage sites .

On January 6, 2026, Oceania says the Vista will depart Miami and spend the first six weeks sailing to destinations along the coast of South America.

The ship would then head back north to ports in Mexico, Southern California, and Hawaii before chugging along to South Pacific islands like Bora Bora.

From there, the itinerary includes several ports in Australia.

After these stops, the ship would head north and west, continuing to destinations like Singapore and Mumbai as it sails from Southeast Asia to India.

From the world’s most populous country, the Vista would then journey to Middle East destinations like Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and Muscat, Oman.

After sailing through the Suez Canal, the ship would begin hitting a series of ports throughout the Mediterranean, Europe, and the British Isles.

And following a few stops in Iceland, the Vista would finally begin its journey back to North America.

After pit stops in Halifax, Canada, New York, and Charleston, South Carolina, the half-year journey would finally conclude where it started: in sunny Miami.

Whew, what a journey!

Throughout these six months, travelers would get to live out their “Suite Life on Deck” dreams.

The new 791-foot-long Vista flexes cabins that start at 240 square feet.

Seafaring guests could spend their days at sea luxuriating in the ship's spa and library.

Folks who prefer to occupy their time with more hands-on activities can instead take cooking and art classes.

Oceania says its culinary program and “destination-focused” itineraries are its bread-and-butter.

luxury river cruise australia

The latter has already been covered: The 2026 world cruise is set to hit 101 ports, after all.

As for the former, Oceania's Vista could have enough restaurants to satisfy even the pickiest of foodies.

The almost one-year-old ship has 11 dining options, from afternoon tea to dishes created by the ship's godmother, celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis.

Guests could spend their mornings grabbing an espresso at the coffee shop.

luxury river cruise australia

And at night (or any time: it's five o'clock "somewhere" when you sail through every time zone, right?), guests can sip on flashy bourbon and rye-based cocktails at the Founders Bar.

Six months at sea isn’t for everyone. But for some travelers, the itinerary’s starting cost of $59,700 per person could be an absolute steal.

luxury river cruise australia

Planning a multi-country trip can be complex: Think of all the hotels, flights, and land transportation you'd have to coordinate.

But on a world cruise, these logistics are all planned for you. Oceania's fare also includes first-class roundtrip flights and transfers, internet, and laundry.

The best part?

luxury river cruise australia

You'll probably lose fewer pairs of socks on a world cruise versus a do-it-yourself vacation: No need to unpack and repack every few days when you'll be living in the same cabin for the entire vacation.
