Pixies and Modest Mouse
With special guest cat power, modest mouse, concert information.
Indie rock titans Pixies and Modest Mouse announced their 2024 co-headline tour across North America with special guest Cat Power joining on all upcoming dates. The 23-date run kicks off on Friday, May 31 in Charleston, SC and includes a stop in Cincinnati, OH at The Andrew J Brady Music Center on June 5 .
The 2024 tour follows the highly successful sold-out 2023 run featuring all three acts, which concluded in San Diego this past September. The 2023 tour included an epic Hollywood Bowl performance in Los Angeles and multiple nights at Pier 17 in New York, along with stops in Napa, Bridgeport, Vail, Seattle and more.
ABOUT PIXIES
Pixies have been acclaimed as the most influential, pioneering band of the late 80s alt/rock movement, having served as a major influence for artists like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, the Strokes, Weezer, and many more. And today, a whole new generation of music fans has been discovering and embracing the band’s “loudquietloud” signature sound. Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa , and the iconic Platinum Doolittle , considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums. Sell-out crowds all over the globe, Pixies’ live shows are unadulterated magic, simultaneously electrifying and lo-fi. Seventy-five minutes of the band playing anything they want, in whatever order they want, the classics and the new gems. And no two Pixies shows are ever the same.

ABOUT MODEST MOUSE
Having recently completed a sold out 25th anniversary tour for their breakthrough album, 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West and played a summer ’23 run with Pixies and Cat Power, Modest Mouse continues to prove themselves to be one of the most consistent live acts today. Modest Mouse released their highly anticipated new album, The Golden Casket, on June 25, 2021 via Epic Records. The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the GRAMMY® Award-nominated multi platinum band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

ABOUT CAT POWER
With a catalogue of songwriting that’s unparalleled in the worlds of indie rock and American music at large—spanning several decades and ten studio albums—Marshall’s work as Cat Power has defied genre and convention, her legacy rippling through the work of a wide range of contemporary musical luminaries ranging from Lana Del Rey, Clairo, and Soccer Mommy to Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker, and Angel Olsen. There’s a rawness and immediacy to Marshall’s music that has stood the test of time, with every new musical missive from her as essential as what’s come before it.

Pixies and Modest Mouse Announce 2024 Co-Headlining North American Tour
by Em Casalena January 22, 2024, 11:59 am
In the wake of 2023’s successful co-headlining run, American alt-rock superstars Pixies and Modest Mouse have announced yet another tour slated for 2024. The tour will feature singer/songwriter Cat Power as main support for the North American Spring/Summer run.
Videos by American Songwriter
The Firefly Distillery in Charleston, South Carolina will be the tour’s official launch pad on May 31. Assuming no further tour dates are announced, Fiddler’s Green in Denver, Colorado on Sunday, June 30th is likely going to be the last stop on the tour.
Short of announcing it on their respective social media accounts, neither band has provided many details on the next nationwide tour. However, this is a tour that needs little introduction. Last year’s co-headlining tour was an incredible one. It sold out fast and many diehard fans of the bands missed out, so it’s only natural that an encore tour would happen in 2024.
General ticket sales for this tour will start on Friday, January 26 at about 10:00 am local. But if you want to get your hands on presale tickets, you have a few options. The official presale event will start on January 23 at 10:00 am EST via Ticketmaster for all tour dates noted at the end of this article.
If you aren’t able to get your tickets during the presale events, we recommend looking through StubHub once general ticket sales have gone live. You might get lucky! Plus, StubHub is backed by the FanProtect Guarantee, so you don’t have to worry about scams.
Pixies are one of the most beloved alt-rock bands in the world. The group started in the early days of grunge (or proto-grunge, depending on who you ask) in the late 1980s. The band has inspired the likes of Nirvana, Radiohead, Weezer, and many other bands that boomed in the 1990s. Pixies have released seven studio albums in their decades-long career, including the iconic Surfer Rosa from 1988 and Doolittle from 1989.
Similarly, Modest Mouse has cemented itself as a symbol of late 1990s indie rock. The band recently celebrated the 25th anniversary of their iconic album The Lonesome Crowded West with a sold-out tour.
And you can’t talk about 1990s indie rock without mentioning singer/songwriter Cat Power, whose songwriting prowess has spanned decades. Her lyricism and aesthetics have inspired the likes of Angel Olsen, Lana Del Rey, Phoebe Bridgers, and many more.
This tour sold out pretty fast last year, so we can only assume it will sell out fast in 2024. Don’t wait around to get your tickets to see Pixies and Modest Mouse live!

Pixies and Modest Mouse
"2024 north america tour" with special guest cat power.
Indie rock titans Pixies and Modest Mouse have announced their 2024 co-headline tour across North America with special guest Cat Power joining on all upcoming dates. Produced by Live Nation, the 23-date run will include a performance at Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre on Tuesday, June 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Quirky, catchy melodies have always been Pixies’ calling card; seven genre-defining studio albums, including the Gold-certified Surfer Rosa, and the iconic Platinum Doolittle, considered one of the all-time, quintessential alt/rock albums.

Everything you need to know about ‘New Heights Live’
Who are jason and travis kelce, and why are they coming to uc.
Brothers, Bearcats, Super Bowl champions and future Hall of Famers Jason and Travis Kelce may hail from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, but they always rep Cincy.
Older brother Jason attended UC from 2006-2010 before being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. Just last month, Jason announced his retirement from the NFL after 13 years as the center and team leader for the team.
Travis attended UC from 2008-2012, playing alongside Jason during their overlapping years. He was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, and he’s played there for his entire career. The superstar tight end is on the heels of his third Super Bowl win. Oh, and he’s Taylor Swift’s boyfriend.

What is ‘New Heights?’
“New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce” is a top-ranked sports podcast launched by the brothers in September 2022. In the weekly show they dissect NFL games and news, including their own performances each week, talk shop with special guests and, as the Kelces have become increasingly popular outside of football — cough, cough, Taylor Swift — share a peek into their personal lives.
What to expect from the live show
Organizers liken it to a concert. Doors open at 5 p.m. The “first act” begins at 7 p.m. with the first-ever Great “Lombaby” Games, a series of Olympic-style challenges in which 10 Bearcat athletes will take on 10 fellow students, with the Kelces serving as commentators/referees. (The name is a nod to the Vince Lombardi Trophy, which is awarded to the winning Super Bowl team. If you know, you know.)
After a brief intermission, the live podcast show is set to begin around 9 p.m. Besides the announcement of special guest Joe Burrow , details on the night have been sparse. The guys have teased everything from Skyline Chili to Adriatico’s Pizza, cannons to live animals, while promising more tangible elements like trivia and Q&As. The mystery is part of the fun.

Where to park
Event parking is available at Campus Green and Woodside garages starting at 3 p.m. and can be purchased online in advance for $13 or $15 day-of.
Will Taylor Swift be there?
While there is a promise of surprise guests (and Swift is on a break from her international tour until May), don’t count on it.

I got a history tour of the Cincinnati Observatory before the great solar eclipse of 2024
T he total solar eclipse coming April 8 is drawing everyone’s attention to the sky with renewed interest in astronomy. Count me among them.
A recent visit to the Cincinnati Observatory in Mount Lookout reminded me why it is one of the city’s most precious treasures. The observatory, designed by renowned Cincinnati architect Samuel Hannaford in 1873, is described as “a picturesque jewel-box of a building capped by a silver dome.” But it’s the historic telescopes, once among the largest in the country, that are the true gems.
John Ventre, the observatory historian, led my family on a tour of the facility and a peek through the extraordinary telescopes to view the universe. It was an awesome experience, a lesson in history and the marvel of ideas.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
Ventre told us the history of the observatory as we went along. He is the co-author, along with Stella Cottam, of a new book, “Cincinnati Observatory: Its Critical Role in the Birth and Evolution of Astronomy in America.” It is presented as a textbook, but it’s an engaging read about some fascinating Cincinnati history.
Our History: 1800s Cincinnati comes to life in this collection of rare photos
Cincinnati built America’s first major observatory
In the 1840s, there were about 130 operating observatories in Europe, but only a dozen or so in America, all of them small, private or associated with a school rather than being professional, said Ventre.
Everything changed due to the efforts of one man: Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel.
Mitchel was born about 1809 in Union County, Kentucky, and was raised in Lebanon, Ohio. Educated at West Point, he returned to the area and in 1836 was offered a position at Cincinnati College to teach mathematics, civil engineering and mechanics. With a keen interest in astronomy, he added lectures on that as well. They were so popular that students started bringing their families along to hear him.
“He was a dynamic lecturer, not common for the day,” Ventre said.
Mitchel also used some clever visual aids. A woman in the audience recalled: “Mr. Mitchel used to prepare his own illustrations by picking out the constellation in thin paper with a large pin; he would nail the paper to a frame and put a candle behind it, and then explain the heavens to us.”
In 1842, Mitchel gave a lecture on the solar system. The overflowing crowds led to it moving to Wesley Chapel on Fifth Street, then the largest venue in the West, seating 1,200.
At the lecture, Mitchel proposed the construction of an observatory in Cincinnati. He hoped to raise $7,500 ( about $240,000 today ) by selling shares in the Cincinnati Astronomical Society for $25 each ( $800 now ).
The 300 stockholders included a cross-section of Cincinnatians: attorneys, doctors, carpenters, teachers, blacksmiths, clerks and a steamboat captain.
John Quincy Adams laid the cornerstone in 1843
The Cincinnati Astronomical Society, with Judge Jacob Burnet as president, sent Mitchel to Europe with $1,000 ( $32,000 now ) to purchase a telescope.
He found an 11-inch Merz and Mahler lens in Munich, Bavaria, that had been ground but not installed. Mitchel had it fitted into a brass and mahogany telescope, then shipped it back to Cincinnati. Wealthy landowner Nicholas Longworth donated 4 acres on Mount Ida (now known as Mount Adams) to place the observatory on a high spot.
Mitchel invited former President John Quincy Adams, who had advocated for a national observatory, to come to Cincinnati to lay the cornerstone . The 76-year-old took a 1,000-mile journey by canal boat and carriage to Cincinnati for the occasion.
On Nov. 9, 1843, a parade marched up the hill in a torrential downpour to place the cornerstone, but it was too wet for Adams’ speech. He gave it the next day at Wesley Chapel. Ventre and Cottam’s book reprints the entire text of what was the former president’s last public speech, filling up 36 pages. In gratitude to Adams’ visit, the citizens renamed Mount Ida in his honor – Mount Adams .
“The telescope (Mitchel) acquired matched or surpassed all the other telescopes in Europe except one,” Ventre said.
On April 14, 1845, when the Merz and Mahler telescope saw “first light,” an astronomy term for its first view, it was the largest telescope in the Western Hemisphere.
Cincinnati Observatory is the oldest operating professional observatory in the U.S.
Relocating the observatory to Mount Lookout
Within a few decades, the Cincinnati air was foul with soot and smoke from the growing city. So plans were made to move the observatory. First the then-new University of Cincinnati, which was organized in 1871 , acquired it. With UC taking ownership of the observatory, telescope and records, the Cincinnati Astronomical Society ceased to exist.
John Kilgour, a banker whose father was a charter member of the society, donated 4 acres of land near Hyde Park for the observatory. The area was then dubbed Mount Lookout. He also gave $10,000 ( $259,000 today ) to build a new observatory, a Greek Revival design by Hannaford.
Construction of the new observatory began in 1873 and it opened in 1875. The original cornerstone laid by Adams was set into the corner of the new building, where it is today.
A second, larger telescope with a 16-inch Alvan Clark and Son refractor, was bought in 1904 and installed in the observatory. A second building, named after Mitchel, was built for the original microscope.
Travel back in time: What was it like to live in Cincinnati in the 1870s?
Saving the historic observatory for the future
In the 1990s, the Cincinnati Observatory was nearly history.
The observatory buildings were in deplorable shape, Ventre said. There were rumors UC wanted to close the observatory, sell the land and put up condos. Concerned neighbors and citizens, including Ventre, formed a Save the Observatory group. UC decided to keep the observatory and offered to pony up money for waterproofing, the costliest part of the $2.5 million restoration.
“The general goal was to make it a working, functional late-1800 astronomical observatory and restore everything as close as practicable to its working condition,” Ventre said.
Today you can learn about the history of the observatory at a small museum and go up to look through the eyepiece of the telescopes for yourself.
What’s remarkable is both telescopes are virtually the same as they were originally. There is no electricity needed. The aluminum shudders of the dome are opened for viewing by pulling a rope. Everything is carefully balanced and turns on gears.
Ventre explained one feature of the large Alvin Clark telescope that much impressed me for its ingenuity.
“There’s about a 400-pound weight in the pier of the telescope,” he said. “By cranking up the weight and letting gravity pull down or drop the weight, that’s kinetic energy. That energy, via various series of chains and gears, moves the telescope at the rate of one revolution per day in the opposite direction that the Earth rotates. Therefore, the byproduct of that, as you point the telescope at a celestial object, the telescope will mechanically track and stay on that target as the Earth turns on its axis in rotation.”
“Even today, it’s a precision machine,” Ventre added. “It’s awesome.”
When my family and I had the opportunity to observe the universe through the telescopes – the same way Ormsby MacKnight Mitchel did more than 175 years ago – we saw the moon, crystal clear, with perfect circles cratering the surface. We saw caramel-colored Jupiter and four of its moons, approximately 400 million miles away.
Looking through the past to see the future.
