As a trail runner and hiker, I love spending time in nature every chance I get, and one of my favorite things to do when I travel to a new city is to get a run in. I have tested many shoe brands on my trips, and no one makes running shoes quite like Hoka (in my humble opinion). So when I got a chance to test out the new Hoka Arahi 7 Running Shoes , I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take them on a few trips — and was very surprised at how well they performed on both concrete and gravel.

This is the seventh iteration of the brand’s iconic stability running shoe, the Arahi. It is a higher stack height training shoe perfect for those who want full-length medial stability in their daily sneakers. And though deemed running shoes, they also perform well as a daily walking shoe for travel if you’re exploring town and on your feet all day. 

Hoka Arahi 7 Running Shoes

Right off the bat, I noticed that the overall fit of the shoe is quite tapered compared to some of the other Hoka shoes thanks to a new updated flat knit upper. This might be a challenge for someone with a wider foot, but combined with a plush tongue and a signature high-heel collar, my foot and ankle felt quite snug and comfortable. I didn’t have to size up like I sometimes do with other running and hiking shoes. The toe box is still quite roomy, so you do have space to wiggle your toes. But if you want a bit more room in the front of your foot, choose the wide version. And like other Hoka shoes, the heel is slightly wider than the front, which gives your foot a bit more stability when you are running on trail or gravel. 

The Hoka Arahi 7 Running Shoes ’ midsole is made from CMEVA (Compression Molded EVA) and is stiffer and firmer than some of the other shoes in its class. I prefer a firmer shoe especially as I run on trails that have loose rocks and gravel so I don’t have to be concerned about slipping or sliding.

 The shoes also have the brand’s “J-frame” technology, a firm piece of form shaped like the letter J in the EVA midsole that hooks around the heel to the medial side of the foot, which helps mitigate overpronation. (Overpronation is when your gait causes the arches of your feet to flatten more than they normally would. Over time this puts strain on muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support your arches causing a lot of foot pain.)

But don’t just take my word for it. One shopper on Hoka’s website noted that they are the most comfortable shoes they have ever worn. “I have neuropathy from chemo, and I feel so much more secure in my Hokas.”

These shoes are a bit heavier at more than one pound, so if you are looking to pack a pair of running shoes or everyday trainers on your next trip, I would wear these on the flight. Thanks to their streamlined look and updated colorways, they are stylish, and I got quite a few compliments from my fellow passengers when I wore them on my flight. Another shopper agreed with me that they are great power walking shoes. “Easily broken in. Hold up well for a 3-mile power walk,” they added.

The Hoka Arahi 7 Running Shoes are best for beginning runners or those who run moderate distances at an easy to moderate pace which is exactly how I run. It is not an extremely technical shoe so if you are looking for trainers that can multitask as walking and running shoes for everything on your itinerary, these are a great choice.

Do Travel-Size Hair Tools Actually Work? I Took Sutra’s Jetsetter Trio on the Road to Find Out

It should be stated up top that I am a sucker for small products. Make anything travel-size and I want it, so it’s not all that surprising that Sutra’s Jetsetter Trio of compact hair tools immediately caught my attention. With an impending trip to Iceland on the horizon and my no checked bags policy , I decided it was a good time to put the tiny tools to the test.

The trio includes a petite hair dryer, a dual-voltage curling iron and a straightener, all enrobed in lavender and housed in a holographic pouch that has enough space remaining to toss in a few hair clips and a scrunchie or two.

As you can see, each tool is small, with none exceeding the length of a moderately-sized banana. (I’m not smirking, you are.)

I don’t typically use a flat iron, but for the sake of this review, I tested it out on my bangs and a few of the longer face-framing pieces that tend to fly every which way. For touching up smaller sections of hair, I thought the straightener did a solid job, but if you’re trying to straighten all your hair and/or you have hair that’s thick or longer than a lob, I’d warn that this will be a time-consuming endeavor.

Personally, I was most curious about the mini curling iron. I have very thick and naturally wavy hair that I often have to finesse into neater ribbons using a large curling iron. Seeing the smaller barrel on this mini, I was skeptical that it could work on my mountain of hair, but I was proven wrong. It curled my hair exceptionally well—almost too well, in fact.

The smaller barrel meant I ended up with tighter curls that were a bit too defined for my liking. Thankfully, once I brushed out the curls and let them fall a little, they settled into the looser waves I usually go for.

All in all, the small tools pack a considerable amount of styling power, but I was particularly blown away—pun intended—by the dryer, which was just as swift at drying my bangs as any full-size tool. And unlike most blow dryers you find at hotels, this one also came with a detachable nozzle and cute lil’ diffuser for more directed air flow.

The Bottom Line

At $100 for three travel-size tools—a hair dryer, curling iron and flat iron—I’d say the trio is reasonably priced and does a pretty good job at styling your hair. However, when compared to my standby full-size curling iron (T3), I’m just not as impressed with the results.

To be clear, it’s not apples to apples here. My T3 is double the size of the mini iron in the trio; it has a much larger barrel and a wider range of customizable heat settings. I also have very thick, long and coarse hair that requires some manipulation to get it to a less chaotic state. If this isn’t an issue for you, I’d say the tools in this set should work just fine. (Also note that you can grab each individual tool for $40, in which case, I’d grab the blow dryer.)

Taoiseach says abortion legislation review requires ‘careful consideration’

Women’s doctors and human rights groups say women still being ‘forced to travel’ for abortions despite legislation.

Reviewing Ireland’s current abortion legislation requires “careful consideration”, Taoiseach Simon Harris has said.

Mr Harris said he was awaiting proposals from the Minister for Health and in his new role as Taoiseach didn’t intend to “wade straight in”.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, the Fine Gael leader would not disclose whether he was in favour of scrapping the three-day waiting period for an abortion.

In an open letter to the Taoiseach, a coalition of women’s doctors and human rights groups said women with crisis pregnancies were still being “forced to travel” for abortions abroad despite legislation being introduced here.

They have called for “urgent action by Government” to ensure the recommendations in a report, published last year, by barrister Marie O’Shea – who reviewed the operation of the 2018 Health (Regulation of Termination of Pregnancy) Act – are implemented.

The report recommended widespread changes, including the decriminalisation of doctors, the removal of the mandatory three-day waiting period to access termination medication, new guidelines on conscientious objection and the reconsideration of the rules around accessing an abortion in cases of fatal foetal abnormality.

The Oireachtas Health Committee examined the proposed legislative changes and has produced its own report with recommendations.

“In relation to the review of abortion services, of course I have personal views, but I’m not here personally, I’m here as the Taoiseach of a country of 5.3 million people,” Mr Harris said.

“I want to await the views of the Minister for Health and his department when they come forward to Cabinet and I also want to try to approach this issue in terms of trying to respect the diversity of views and bring forward consensus insofar as possible.”

Mr Harris said he was also very conscious that commitments made by politicians before the electorate mattered. “We had a very significant debate in this country, unlike other referenda, we published legislation. We told the Irish people if you vote yes, this is what it will mean,” he said.

“Of course we also put in, and I was the minister who put this in the legislation, a review clause for this very reason so that people will continue to check their services [are] working as planned, you know, are things going as was intended.

“I do think they need to be given consideration but that is the balance. The Irish people were given the assurance that if they vote for this, this is legislation you will get and then obviously there’s a review alongside that so I think this requires careful consideration.”

RTÉ Investigates is due to air a programme on the State’s provision of abortion services on Monday evening. In an interview with the programme, Ms O’Shea has called on Government to prioritise ongoing issues with the legislation, saying vulnerable women who continue to be forced abroad for terminations were being treated like “criminals”.

When questioned, Mr Harris said he would watch the programme and that “of course” he didn’t want women to feel like criminals.

The Termination of Pregnancy Act, which came into effect on January 1st, 2019, provides abortion without restriction up to 12 weeks’ gestation, subject to a three-day waiting period.

Terminations are also permitted after 12 weeks if there is a risk to the life or health of the mother or in cases where it is judged the foetus will die before, or within, 28 days of birth.

‘The Greatest Hits’ Review: Yes, She Could Turn Back Time.

A high-concept movie about music and grief lacks follow through.

“The Greatest Hits” literalizes the familiar heartache: You’re driving down the road, radio blaring at full tilt. Suddenly that song comes on, the one that reminds you of your ex, or of a time that was joyous but now is a sadness-tinged memory. Plunged back into that head space, you feel as though you’ve traveled through time. And the longing it prompts can be unbearable.

This is where Harriet (Lucy Boynton) finds herself, except instead of feeling as if she’s moving through time, she is truly hurtling through the fourth dimension. Since having lost her boyfriend, Max (David Corenswet), in a tragic accident, any song Harriet hears attached to memories of him catapults her, quite literally, back to the moment in their relationship when that song was playing. When she leaves the house, she wears noise-canceling headphones to protect against unexpected time travel provoked by radios and errant Spotify shuffles.

At home, though, she spends her nights trying to slip backward. Harriet has become obsessed with trying to return to a moment where she can set the world straight and ensure that Max won’t die, which means, even two years after his death, that she is still “hiding out in her grief,” as another character puts it. In the midst of this, at her grief support group, Harriet meets a nice guy named David (Justin H. Min), who’s dealing with loss of his own.

Ned Benson, who wrote and directed “The Greatest Hits,” has explored this territory before. His previous work, “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby,” was a trilogy, made up of two films that explored a couple’s grief-stricken, tumultuous relationship from each of their individual perspectives, and a third that combined them. (As the title suggests, music was part of the story, too.) That film felt personal, and so does this one. It earnestly evokes the way grief mires us in memory, making us feel as if our personal timelines are slip-sliding and looping, eternally arrested in the past. Moving forward seems impossible.

But “The Greatest Hits” lacks the imagination of “Eleanor Rigby” and, at times, seems like it might be in the wrong genre. It’s easy to imagine a rom-com version of this movie, since the elements are all there — the hip location (mostly the Silver Lake and Los Feliz neighborhoods of Los Angeles), the meet-cute, the queer best friend (a mainstay of the genre , for better or worse), the crates of vinyl records, the pining, the hot guys, even the chemistry. But this movie lacks the lightness and humor of a rom-com, which might balance out all the dreary moments and make it feel more watchable. The version that exists feels more suited for lovelorn teens just off their first breakup than adults moving through profound loss and sorrow, more acquainted with the ways life can’t just stop when tragedy strikes.

“The Greatest Hits” proceeds slowly and repetitively, which doesn’t have to be a problem: The gentleness of the pace and storytelling gives the cast space to breathe and react to each other, to build relationships that feel reasonably authentic. Similarly, the music choices (which are all over the map both in genre and era) are fun and fresh, lacking the on-the-nose quality that a film with more bang-on choices might have provoked. But as it goes on, the movie begins to feel mired in its own high-concept conceit without space to develop it further. Is there a reason the only music that triggers time travel for Harriet is connected to Max? Are there tunes that throw her back to times she prefers not to remember? Why is it important to recall that she used to be a music producer?

There’s an interesting film dancing around the edges of “The Greatest Hits,” but there’s both too much sentimentality and not enough thought, and that’s too bad. For audiences in search of a good cry, it may still do the job. But for those of us for whom the music-driven time travel experience is still metaphorical, it’s cold comfort, a fantasy with no hope of fulfillment.
