Hospital treatments, general practitioners or dentists, what is covered?

If you are in need of medical treatment, it is important that the treatment is undertaken by a doctor whose certification is officially recognized in the country you receive your treatment. Depending on the insurance coverage you have chosen, certain exclusions may be applicable. We recommend consulting the General Insurance Conditions. If something remains unclear, we suggest asking questions concerning reimbursement and claims directly to the concerned claims service. Outpatient treatments (meaning you don’t have an overnight stay in a medical facility) generally have to be paid in advance. Then you can proceed to submit your claim to the claims service via email, via your customer account or through the iOS / Android app.

In the case of hospital admission for inpatient treatment (meaning an overnight stay), you can present your digital insurance card saved on your MySwisscare account or on the iOS or Android app. If the inpatient facility requires further information, you can simply click or tap share - and enter the email address given by the hospital. They will then receive the complete insurance policy with all the details. Most of the time, inpatient treatments will be billed directly to the concerned insurer, however, they may request a security deposit.

Dentists are usually not covered unless there is an accident. Should a plan provide coverage for dental treatments this will be stated in the General Insurance Conditions (GIC’s and the benefits list).

What is a deductible?

The insurance deductible is a fixed sum that is at the expense of the insured in the case of a claim covered by the chosen insurance policy. The General Insurance Conditions define the amount and the scope of application.

The deductible can be calculated per contractual year, per calendar year, for a specific duration, for a specific treatment or for a specific insurance cover. Not all insurance products are subject to a deductible.

The insurance deductible is also stated on the insurance policy.  

How do I claim my medical expenses?

Please note that coverage is only provided for the benefits stated in the General Insurance Conditions. Sometimes exclusions are also applicable and they vary depending on the insurance product. It is recommended to verify the coverage of the chosen product in advance. In the case of outpatient treatment (no overnight stay at a medical facility), the insured always has to pay for the medical treatments (doctor’s, pharmacy, specialists, hospital outpatient treatments) in advance.   

To ensure you are refunded quickly, we recommend following the claim procedure via your customer account or by using the MySwissare iOS or Android App.

• Select the concerned insurance policy and complete the online fields
• Take a picture and/or upload the .pdf or .jpg file of your detailed invoice
• Take a picture and/or upload the proof of payment (bank receipt or cash payment receipt from the pharmacy, doctor, specialist, hospital...)
• Write a short statement concerning the medical issue and the administered treatment
• Send / Submit

How long does it take for a refund to be issued?

Once the concerned claims service has received all required documentation the insurer will initiate the refund procedure. In most instances, a refund is issued within 30 days of submission of the complete documentation. During peak seasons (for example December) it is possible that a refund would take longer. If within 45 days you have not been reimbursed by the insurer, we recommend that you contact them directly via email or our contact form.

Escape from everyday family life at home for a little while – a holiday with children is the perfect opportunity for you to do just this. Good preparation is essential to make flying pleasant and relaxed for both parents and children. We’d like to help you with this. 

Whether it’s the first time you’re flying with your child or if you’re already an old hand at it, we have compiled the most important information and some tips for travelling by air with children for you: step by step, from the preparations to the flight to arriving at your destination. Use our checklist for holidaying with children to manage the flight and the entire trip with ease.

Before the flight

Children must have their own passport or ID card to travel. It is not possible for them to be included in their parents’ identity documents. You can apply for a child’s passport to be issued or extended at your appropriate passport office. Find out in plenty of time whether any immunisations are recommended for your destination and what travel documents you will need. Before travelling with a baby and/or child, check that your health insurance covers your family and includes the optimum medical care for you all. After all, new places are exciting and have to be explored from top to bottom – and accidents can happen with all that activity. Children can also have a sensitive reaction to stimuli such as the sun, humidity and altitude. Speak to your insurance company about the services they offer for travelling abroad and, if required, take out travel insurance.

Not long now till you leave? Check your children’s health. If they are feeling unwell, or you’re not sure whether they’re fit to fly, consult your GP before your flight. If your child has a heavy cold, we advise against flying. Nor should children fly if they have a high temperature or have recently had surgery.

Very important: flying can be an adventure for children, but they may also be a little nervous about it. Do prepare them for the flight, especially if it is the first time they have been on an aeroplane. Get them excited about the upcoming flight, and tell them what will happen before and after it and while you’re airborne.

Children may feel insecure in different surroundings. Their favourite cuddly toy will help to alleviate their fears and create a feel-good atmosphere. Remember to put their favourite “blankie” in your hand baggage if you’re flying with your children. It will give them a good feeling, and also help to keep them warm if they get a little chilly on the aeroplane. Make yourselves comfortable together. If that includes you taking off your shoes, please feel free. Thick socks will keep your feet warm. Their favourite snack might also help your child to feel happy.

Booking for children

If you’re flying with a child, you can easily eliminate a number of stumbling blocks beforehand. Starting with your booking. Do so in plenty of time, especially if you’re planning to travel during the school holidays. Then you have more chance of getting the best possible flight connection. When you book, think about the actual flight as well. If you all want to sit together, we suggest reserving your seats in plenty of time. Children also need to have a valid ticket. However, whether or not your child will have their own seat depends on their age. We distinguish between two age categories for children. Up to 2 years of age: If, for instance, you’re flying with a 1-year-old child, then you don’t have to reserve a separate seat because he or she will sit on an adult’s lap with a special safety belt. 2 to 11 years of age: If you are flying with a child that is two years of age or older, you will have to reserve a seat.

State your child’s age when you make the booking to see the discounted rates. It is also a good idea to provide the child’s age so we can adapt the meals to our youngest passengers’ requirements. After all, children don’t necessarily love the same foods as their parents.

• Children aged between two and nine years will automatically be served a child meal on long-haul flights in every class and on European flights in SWISS Business.
• If your child is aged between nine and twelve years, you can also order the meal in advance. Again, there’s no charge.
• If your child has any allergies or intolerances, we have a number of Special meals on the aircraft

However, we still advise arriving at the airport in plenty of time, especially during school holidays.

If you’re flying with a baby, there are relaxed conditions for carrying containers of liquids in your hand baggage. You can take the milk and liquid baby food required on your flight with you even if the container holds more than 100 millilitres. You do not need a transparent plastic bag for them. Just show the baby food to the security personnel at the security check. Before you fly, find out about the Baggage conditions for children. Important: Pushchairs and buggies need to fold down to go on an aircraft (one piece). A protective cover is recommended to protect them against damage and the weather during transportation. Bubble wrap and special travel covers are good choices. If you don’t have anything suitable with you, ask at the check-in desk if they have a large plastic bag; sometimes the staff there are able to help.

If you’re travelling with children, it’s unlikely that only taking hand baggage with you will be enough. However, even if you have a considerable amount of baggage to check in, you can still enjoy a relaxed start to your holiday. If you’re in Switzerland, use our AirPortr service  which will collect your checked baggage from your home the day before your flight.

During the flight

Once you have got yourselves onto the aircraft, it’s time to relax and enjoy the flight. If you’re travelling with a baby and want to warm up a bottle or water for baby food, the crew will be pleased to help you. And please don’t worry about approaching the crew if you’d like to nurse or change your baby on the aircraft.

The entertainment programme

If you’re flying with children, your SWISS crew will usually hand out puzzles, colouring books and toys before you take off. On long-haul flights, the child-appropriate entertainment programme will help to keep children occupied during the flight. It includes a selection of films, computer games and music. Download the SWISS Kids App , which contains all sorts of games that will help your children to learn about flying on your trip. This app is a great complement to the on-board entertainment programme and your child’s own toys on the aircraft. And hopefully you won’t hear the dreaded words “I’m bored …”!

Things to think of

A tiny mishap when eating or drinking or a short delay – these things can easily be overcome if you’ve got enough nappies and spare clothing with you. If you’re flying with children, a dummy (pacifier) will help them to cope with the changes in pressure when taking off and landing. Older children will prefer chewing gum or sweets. If your child is taking any medicine, do remember to put it in your hand baggage.

Safety during the flight

The use of a Child car seat is not compulsory, but it is recommended. Your child will need its own seat in this case. There is no charge for taking a child’s car seat for children under 12 years of age and weighing less than 27 kg. If you do take a car seat with you, please note that it must be approved for use on an aircraft and fit on a SWISS seat (43 x 43 cm). If you are flying with a baby under eight months of age and weighing less than 11 kg, you will be given a special baby bassinet (cot) on the aircraft. Please contact the Service Center in plenty of time, because there is only a limited number of cots on a flight.

At Abortion Clinic Visit, Harris Says U.S. Is Confronting ‘Health Care Crisis’

The trip made history and offered a vivid look at how the politics of abortion rights have transformed since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Vice President Kamala Harris described the flood of laws restricting abortion access as a “health care crisis” as she visited with abortion providers and staff members on Thursday at a clinic in St. Paul, Minn.

The stop by Ms. Harris at the Planned Parenthood clinic was believed to be the first official visit by a vice president to an abortion clinic. No presidents are known to have made such visits, either.

Speaking to reporters in the lobby of the clinic, which was open and seeing patients, Ms. Harris assailed conservative “extremists” for passing laws that restrict abortion, resulting in the denial of emergency care for pregnant women and the shuttering of clinics that provide reproductive health care beyond abortion.

“These attacks against an individual’s right to make decisions about their own body are outrageous and, in many instances, just plain old immoral,” she said. “How dare these elected leaders believe they are in a better position to tell women what they need, to tell women what is in their best interest. We have to be a nation that trusts women.”

The image alone of the nation’s second-ranking leader walking into an abortion clinic provided a vivid illustration of how the politics of abortion rights have transformed since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022. In the lobby was a map showing Planned Parenthood clinics in Minnesota and neighboring states. Minnesota had by far the most, with a few in Iowa. Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota were almost bare — all have restricted abortion access since the overturning of Roe.

For decades, many Democrats viewed affirmative support for abortion rights as a political risk, fearing such a position could alienate more moderate voters who were uncomfortable with open discussion of the procedure. The party embraced cautious slogans like “safe, legal and rare” and policies like banning taxpayer funding of abortions.

But the fall of Roe upended those politics, energizing a new generation of voters energized by their support for abortion rights. The issue has become one of the Democrats’ biggest strengths, party strategists say. In campaign speeches, as he did in his State of the Union address, President Biden casts the issue of abortion rights as one of personal freedom and the right to make private health care decisions.

Celinda Lake, a Democratic pollster who has been surveying voters about abortion for more than four decades, said she could not recall a time when abortion rights were as motivating for their voters.

“It’s the No. 1 issue working for Democrats at every level in office ,” Ms. Lake said. “Everything from county commissioners to presidents are being elected around this issue.”

The issue is firmer ground for Democrats. Ms. Harris was visiting Minnesota a week after 19 percent of voters in the Democratic primary voted for “uncommitted,” as many of them treated it as a protest against the administration’s policies in Gaza.

After little discussion of abortion during Mr. Biden’s 2020 campaign, his strategists are embracing the issue. They’ve run ads featuring the testimonials of women denied access to the procedure in conservative states and attacked former President Donald J. Trump for appointing three of the justices who voted to overturn Roe.

Democrats’ efforts have been helped by a steady drumbeat of litigation, legislation and court decisions in conservative states that restrict not only abortion but also other aspects of reproductive health, including contraception and fertility treatments.

Tresa Undem, a pollster who tracks public opinion about abortion, said those actions had changed how voters — particularly women — view the role of government in their reproductive health care.

Recent polling from KFF , a nonprofit group focused on health policy, found that 86 percent of female voters of reproductive age say decisions about abortions should be made by a woman, in consultation with her doctor. Broad majorities also want laws guaranteeing a national right to abortion, access to abortion for women facing pregnancy-related emergencies and the right to travel to get an abortion.

“They are scared about their own mortality,” Ms. Undem said. “And they don’t want politicians or the government to have any say in the circumstances and the reasons, the why and the when.”

Mr. Biden has promised to restore federal abortion rights and preserve access to medication abortion, which faces new threats from a case set to be argued before the Supreme Court this month. Those assurances represent a notable escalation for Mr. Biden, an observant Catholic who spent decades caught between his religious opposition to the procedure and the policy of his party.

But Mr. Biden has still expressed some uneasiness with the procedure itself, often avoiding uttering the word “abortion.”

It is Ms. Harris who has emerged as the administration’s most forceful champion of abortion rights, touring the country to highlight the actions taken by the administration to preserve abortion access. She has taken a far more assertive approach than the president, holding meetings about the topic with hundreds of state lawmakers, meeting with abortion doctors and patients and speaking about the once-taboo issue in plain language.

“Please do understand that when we talk about a clinic such as this, it is absolutely about health care and reproductive health care. So everyone get ready for the language: uterus,” she said, speaking outside the clinic in St. Paul. “Issues like fibroids. We can handle this.”

Nearly all of her stops have been in Democratic-led states that have become havens for abortion seekers, as broad swaths of the South and the Midwest have ushered in more restrictive laws.

On Thursday, at St. Paul Health Center, Vandalia, where Ms. Harris was speaking, about two dozen anti-abortion protesters stood in the street outside holding signs that read “Planned Parenthood = Abortion” and “Abortion is not healthcare.”

A doctor at the clinic said it had experienced a 25 percent increase in abortions and a 100 percent increase in out-of-state patients since Roe was overturned.

“Minnesota has become a bastion of access for abortion care,” said Dr. Sarah Traxler, the chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood North Central States. “Our new abortion landscape is difficult. It is dangerous. And it is putting my patients and health care providers at severe risk.”

White House officials say they have largely reached the limits of their power to protect abortion rights . Legislation codifying federal abortion rights has failed twice and has no chance of passage, given the narrow Democratic majority in the Senate and disagreements within the president’s own party over the scope of such a bill.

Administration officials have encouraged Democratic state legislators to take a proactive role on the issue. Last year, Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota signed legislation enshrining abortion rights into state law, an effort to ensure the procedure remains legal no matter who takes office in the state.

The Society of Family Planning, a health research organization, found that the average number of abortions in the state increased by about 36 percent in the year after the Supreme Court decision.

“What happened here in Minnesota with the re-election of the governor and the turning of the State Legislature, is what has led to ensuring that these fundamental rights are intact and are protected,” said Ms. Harris, before leaving the clinic for a Women for Biden-Harris rally in St. Paul. “Elections matter.”

At the campaign rally later in the afternoon, Ms. Harris put the blame for what has happened post-Roe on Mr. Trump, calling him “the architect of a health care crisis.”

The former president, she said, was “proud that women across our nation are suffering, proud that doctors and nurses could be thrown in prison for administering care.”
