New augmented reality walking tour reveals what Third Ward ghost signs used to look like

snsd 3rd tour

Mike Roe, the executive creative director for Milwaukee marketing agency Hoffman York , got interested in ghost signs when he noticed one outside his office window in the Third Ward, and then started noticing them everywhere in the neighborhood.

Ghost signs are faded advertisements that were painted on the outside of buildings decades ago, the remnants of which can still be seen.

"These signs were like the original out-of-home advertisements before TV, before social media, when you'd paint a big message on the side of your building to say, 'These are things we sell,'" Roe said. "And now it's like this art form of a part of history."

As his interest in the ghost signs grew, Roe started talking to people at the Historic Third Ward Association and learned about some of the factors that make the old, faded signs so prevalent in the Third Ward — including the fact that the area is a federally protected historic district and that it has a concentration of brick buildings built after a fire in 1892 destroyed hundreds of wooden buildings .

Roe wondered if there was a noninvasive way to preserve the signs before they completely fade away so people can see what they looked like in their glory days. With the help of augmented reality technology, he and some coworkers created a ghost sign tour of 13 signs on 10 buildings in the Third Ward. Now people can scan a QR code on a paper map or a mobile link, hold up their phone to a building, and see what the ghost sign used to look like.

Here's what Roe had to say about the tour and his fascination with ghost signs.

How did you learn what the ghost signs used to look like?

Most of the signs are now illegible so I had to find old photographs, some of them century-old. And when you look for those photos, they're usually of other things. So you're sifting through all these old photographs to try to catch these buildings in the background.

I found all these photos at the Milwaukee Public Library and the Milwaukee County Historical Society and the Wisconsin Historical Society . I've never had an excuse to really explore those places before, but whenever I would tell the staff there what I was looking to do, everyone was so friendly and excited and happy to help.

Once we found enough photos for reference, our designers and art directors re-created the signs. The augmented reality work was challenging because that type of technology works really well for closer stuff, like when you go to a furniture store website and they show you what your furniture would look like in your living room. But we were trying to use the technology on a much bigger scale, to show what something would look like on the side of a whole building. The developers used geolocation and got it worked out so when you use your phone to look at the side of the building, the sign will sit there and when you move, it stays anchored and doesn't float around.

What can people expect when they go on the tour?

People can go to the Historic Third Ward Association, 525 E. Chicago St., to get a copy of the map. We're also hoping to partner with other places in the Third Ward, like the Milwaukee Public Market, 400 N. Water St., so people spending time in the Third Ward can pick up a map to either take a walking tour of the signs or use the mobile link ( augmentedhistory.org ) when they come across the buildings.

Then, as you come up to one of the buildings on the map, you use your phone to scan the QR code for that building, and hold up your phone to the ghost sign, and it will overlay the image of what the sign used to look like.

Will there be more ghost sign tours in the future?

What's great about having this tour in the Third Ward is, in addition to so many ghost signs, people can get something to eat, go to the shops and the galleries, spend some time walking around and have a fun adventure.

We've had kind of tunnel vision on creating this experience and making it live, and now, after doing a soft launch, we're realizing how many people are really enthusiastic about this. A lot of people have told me about their passion for this art form, so we'd love to feed that passion as much as we can. And I've noticed there are a lot of ghost signs in the Fifth Ward as well. A part of me would love to expand the tour, and I do love the idea of finding other ghost signs in Milwaukee.

How do you explain your fascination with ghost signs?

I would never have called myself a history buff, but there's something about these signs. I look at them and then when I see what they used to look like, I think about that company and what they used to sell and what it used to be like.

Like one of the buildings had these two Rex Chocolates signs, which was this big chocolate manufacturer. When I was researching them, I found magazine and newspaper articles about them, then on eBay, I found some of their old candy tins. I love to see that there was this whole experience, this whole brand that few people know about now that used to be this giant of Milwaukee industry.

I've got to watch out. It's definitely a rabbit hole.

Takeaways from the 2024 Olympic wrestling trials: 13 athletes punch tickets to Paris

snsd 3rd tour

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The U.S. wrestling team for the 2024 Paris Olympics is just about set.

After a grueling two days of competition at the Bryce Jordan Center on the campus of Penn State, 18 wrestlers emerged from the Olympic wrestling trials with a victory in their respective weight classes and styles. And in doing so, the vast majority of them − 13 of the 18 − officially punched their tickets to Paris later this summer. The other five will now represent Team USA and try to earn their spots at an Olympic qualifying tournament in May.

Many of the names who qualified Saturday will be familiar to casual Olympic fans, from Helen Maroulis to Kyle Snyder and Kyle Dake . But others might be new, including a pair of dominant youngsters who bested their veteran opponents in the women's tournament.

Here are the key takeaways and things to know from the Olympic wrestling trials, with an eye toward Paris.

Kennedy Blades, Amit Elor leading next wave

Two of the most dominant performances of the trials came courtesy of two 20-year-old women who had never made an Olympic team: Kennedy Blades and Amit Elor.

Elor has taken the global wrestling stage by storm, winning a combined eight world titles in various age divisions over the past three years. She looked in complete control in 6-0 and 2-1 wins over Forrest Molinari at 68 kilograms.

Perhaps the more surprising result came at 76 kg, where Blades upset reigning Olympic silver medalist Adeline Gray in convincing fashion, with an 11-6 victory in the opener followed by an 8-3 win to claim her spot on the Olympic team. Blades said it was a surreal moment, given their history; she said Gray actually coached her at her first trip to the Pan-American Games, when Blades was a teenager.

"Now we're both wrestling for an Olympic spot. It's awesome," Blades said. "This younger generation did look up to the older generation. Now as they start to probably retire and stuff, and we're catching up, they're just setting a great example for us."

While veterans Sarah Hildebrandt, Kayla Miracle and Helen Maroulis still give the U.S. women's Olympic team an experienced feel, they know more young talent is coming. Hildebrandt faced Audrey Jimenez, a high-schooler who won the Arizona boys' state wrestling championships earlier this year, in her weight class final, for example.

"It's just a really beautiful cycle," said Hildebrandt, 30. "You're seeing the depth of women's wrestling in the States grow."

Is this the end for Jordan Burroughs?

Burroughs, the six-time world champion and 2012 Olympic gold medalist, told multiple news outlets in stories published this month that he would retire either after the 2024 Paris Games or Olympic trials. But when Jason Nolf knocked him out of the 74-kilogram challenge tournament Friday night, Burroughs did not speak with reporters or otherwise confirm his decision. Nor did he leave his shoes on the mat − the universal wrestling sign for retirement − like fellow U.S. star J'den Cox had hours earlier.

While the official announcement might be pending, Burroughs likely knows he is at the end of the road. He has five children, including a two-month-old boy, Badge. And in a sport where 20-somethings usually reign, he's a few months shy of his 36th birthday and would be 40 by the time the 2028 Olympics roll around.

Kyle Snyder joins rare club

On a night where reigning gold medalist David Taylor's stunning loss drew headlines, Kyle Snyder managed to win comfortably over his opponent, Isaac Trumble. In fact, he didn't concede a point.

Still just 28, Snyder has been a consistent force at 97 kg, winning nine Olympic and world medals in that weight class since 2015. He will now be making his third trip to the Olympics, looking to add to the gold medal he won in Rio de Janeiro and the silver he won in Tokyo. According to USA Wrestling, he is just the 11th American wrestler to qualify for three Games.

"The first time you do it, you're real happy. Now it's almost just an expectation (I have) of myself," Snyder said. "And then the real fun starts."

Parris is heading to Paris

The heavyweight wrestler who will represent Team USA in Paris is none other than Mason Parris, the reigning world bronze medalist who recently wrapped up an outstanding collegiate career at Michigan.

He celebrated his back-to-back 7-0 wins over Hayden Zillmer by donning a "Parris to Paris" hat like his family. When asked where the hats came from, he said he had no clue. His parents just handed him one when he stepped off the mat.

"It's destiny, you know?" Parris said. "I'm 24 years old. 2024. Parris in Paris."

Seeds have advantage

The Olympic wrestling trials unfold in a bracket-style format, but in 14 of the 18 weight classes, at least one athlete got an automatic bye to the semifinals or finals − which appears to offer a huge advantage. The athletes with byes get to rest for most or all of the trials' first day. And they don't have to weigh in multiple times, relieving some of the pressure that cutting weight can bring.

At this year's trials, however, there was more parity than one would think. Five athletes worked their way up what's called the challenge tournament, then beat an athlete who had a bye − most notably Aaron Brooks, who beat Taylor.

"It's pros and cons to both," he said, when asked if wrestling in the challenge tournament helped him build momentum or provided any other advantage. "I wouldn't pick one. Just wherever you're at, use what you've got."

Still work to do

While a winner was crowned in every weight class, three Greco-Roman athletes and two in men's freestyle have another step to take. They'll have to compete at a last-chance Olympic qualifying tournament in Istanbul, Turkey from May 9-12, when the last slots in the Paris 2024 field will be at stake.

Spencer Lee, who beat defending Olympic bronze medalist Thomas Gilman in his final Saturday, views the event as another opportunity to build international experience.

"I see it as a blessing," he said, "and I'll get ready for the Olympics after I go win that tournament."

Korda 1 stroke back in suspended 3rd round of Chevron Championship as she chases 5th straight win

Take a look back at nelly korda’s five consecutive victories.

Nelly Korda

THE WOODLANDS, Texas (AP) — Nelly Korda was one shot off the lead at the Chevron Championship when the third round was suspended Saturday because of lightning in the area.

Play at Carlton Woods was halted just before 3 p.m. and called for the day two-and-a-half hours later with dangerous conditions remaining. The third round of the LPGA's first major of the season will resume Sunday morning, with the final round scheduled to commence just before 9:30 a.m.

Korda, who is trying to tie an LPGA Tour record with her fifth straight victory, was 3-under 41 through 11 holes in the third round and 10 under overall. She entered Saturday one shot off the lead after posting a 7-under 137 through the first two rounds.

The top-ranked Korda is seeking her second major after winning the Women's PGA Championship in 2021. She could join Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events.

Korda was asked about the challenges of having to finish the third round Sunday before playing the final round.

"I think you just have to try to be positive about it and just tell yourself that you can't get caught up in possibly girls being on 18 or not having that many holes left," she said. "If you think about it positively, then I have a lot of opportunities left in the day that I can go out and maybe capitalize on a couple of them, then that's good. But I'm going to think about it positively rather than negatively."

Canadian Brooke Henderson, who was at 2-under 142 through two rounds, rocketed up the leaderboard and into a tie with Korda for second Saturday by shooting an 8-under 59 through 17 holes.

"It was on six when I made that par save," Henderson said. "It really kept my round alive, and then from there I was able to get things going. It was really fun to kind of get on a bit of a run. I feel like this year I've just played pretty solid, but I haven't really seen that run and kind of had that excitement. That was really fun for me today, and hopefully just do something similar tomorrow."

Henderson, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, had a one-putt streak of 10 with six birdies and an eagle in that stretch.

"Anytime my putter gets to working, I'm pretty happy because ball-striking is usually a strength of mine," she said. "This week I've been hitting it really well, so when I've been able to make a few putts, it feels really good, and hopefully keep it hot tomorrow."

Atthaya Thitikul had the lead at 11 under and was through 12 holes when play was suspended. She started the round tied with Jin Hee Im for the lead with a 136 in the first two rounds.

Thitikul, a 21-year-old from Thailand who has won twice on the LPGA Tour and missed the beginning of this season with a thumb injury, was asked about how she expects the normally firm greens to play Sunday, with rain expected to continue overnight.

"The greens are going to play a little bit easier, but the drives, other things may be harder," she said. "I don't know what it's going to be like because some holes we have the wind, and it's helped. Maybe you have a bunker on the way and then you can get over it. But if it's soft and kind of like not dry, then maybe you couldn't get over some holes."

Im was in fourth place at 9 under Saturday through 11 holes.

The third round of the LPGA’s first major of the season will resume Sunday morning, with the final round scheduled to commence just before 9:30 a.m.

Korda, who is trying to tie an LPGA Tour record with her fifth straight victory, was 3-under 41 through 11 holes in the third round and 10 under overall. She entered Saturday one shot off the lead after posting a 7-under 137 through the first two rounds.

The top-ranked Korda is seeking her second major after winning the Women’s PGA Championship in 2021. She could join Nancy Lopez (1978) and Annika Sorenstam (2004-05) as the only players to win five consecutive LPGA events.

Korda was asked about the challenges of having to finish the third round Sunday before playing the final round.

“I think you just have to try to be positive about it and just tell yourself that you can’t get caught up in possibly girls being on 18 or not having that many holes left,” she said. “If you think about it positively, then I have a lot of opportunities left in the day that I can go out and maybe capitalize on a couple of them, then that’s good. But I’m going to think about it positively rather than negatively.”

Canadian Brooke Henderson, who was at 2-under 142 through two rounds, rocketed up the leaderboard and into a tie with Korda for second Saturday by shooting an 8-under 59 through 17 holes.

“It was on six when I made that par save,” Henderson said. “It really kept my round alive, and then from there I was able to get things going. It was really fun to kind of get on a bit of a run. I feel like this year I’ve just played pretty solid, but I haven’t really seen that run and kind of had that excitement. That was really fun for me today, and hopefully just do something similar tomorrow.”

Henderson, who has 13 LPGA wins with two majors, had a one-putt streak of 10 with six birdies and an eagle in that stretch.

“Anytime my putter gets to working, I’m pretty happy because ball-striking is usually a strength of mine,” she said. “This week I’ve been hitting it really well, so when I’ve been able to make a few putts, it feels really good, and hopefully keep it hot tomorrow.”

“The greens are going to play a little bit easier, but the drives, other things may be harder,” she said. “I don’t know what it’s going to be like because some holes we have the wind, and it’s helped. Maybe you have a bunker on the way and then you can get over it. But if it’s soft and kind of like not dry, then maybe you couldn’t get over some holes.”

Im was in fourth place at 9 under Saturday through 11 holes.
