6 Best Malaga Food Tours in 2024
There’s no visit to Malaga without trying its delicious traditional products and dishes, and one of the best ways to do so is by going on one of the best Malaga food tours .
Malaga is mainly known for its beautiful coastline and sunny weather, but the food isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However, Malaga cuisine is full of flavours!
Fish is the star ingredient in Malaga, and it’s unsurprising due to its location. However, as a local, I can assure you that Malaga cuisine isn’t only fish; other great ingredients, such as almonds and raisins, are incorporated in many dishes.
Depending on the area you visit in the province of Malaga, you’ll find hearty stews and meat dishes on the mountainside and delicious fish dishes and salad on the coast. And, if you have a sweet tooth, get ready to try typical desserts and cakes, like tortas locas, and Malaga wine.
The best way to discover local food is by visiting the places locals visit! If you want to learn about the food culture in Malaga and taste its delicacies, going on a food tour is your best option.
Ready to make your way through Malaga while trying the local cuisine? I’ve compiled a list of the best Malaga food tours.

Tips to make the most of a food tour
⮞ Book a food tour at the beginning of your holiday . By doing this, you’ll discover what and where to eat. You might really like one of the tapa bars you tried on the tour, so you can return.
⮞ Make your tour guide aware of any allergies, intolerances or special diet you might follow in advance. You can do this just after booking your tour. This will help them look for alternative dishes for you.
⮞ Don’t eat or drink much before the tour . This is an obvious tip, but good to remember. You’re going to have the chance to taste lots of tapas, and you don’t really want to miss out on trying something because you aren’t hungry.
⮞ Ask questions . The local guides are very knowledgeable and can give you more insights into food and recommendations for the rest of your holiday.
⮞ Be open to trying new ingredients and dishes . You will discover new flavours, and you might love them too!
6 Must-try food in Malaga
Although you’ll find the chance to try some delicious tapas and traditional dishes on the food tours, you won’t be able to try them all, and this is why I have come up with a list of delightful dishes you need to eat during your holiday in my hometown:
Espetos de sardinas
They consist of fresh sardines, which are slowly roasted and then seasoned with coarse salt. For a special touch, squeeze a lemon! The flavours of the sardines and lemon juice work perfectly.
Ensalada Malagueña
A traditional refreshing salad made with salted cod, oranges, hard-boiled eggs, potatoes, black olives and extra virgin olive oil. It’s usually enjoyed in the summer months.
It is a cold soup made with bread, almonds, garlic, olive oil, water and salt. Not only is it typical of Malaga but Granada too. It is usually served with grapes.
Fritura Malagueña
It is a mixture of fried fish and seafood. This is served on a big plate or tray and includes anchovies, whiting and squid, among other fish and seafood. Splash some lemon juice and dip in aioli sauce.
Tortas locas
Delicious rounded pastries filled with custard and topped with orange icing and cherry. They are one of the best pastries.
Yemas del Tajo
These sweets originated in Ronda, and although they have two ingredients (egg yolks and sugar), they are incredibly delicious.

Day 3, Thursday: Lunch in a Hidden Local Gem
We hope you only had a light breakfast because day three of your culinary tour is once more devoted to discovering the joys of Spanish food!
Today we will be taking you for lunch in one of our all-time favourite local restaurants, tucked away in an unassuming mountain village at the edge of the Granada province.
The husband and wife team who head up this fantastic eatery pride themselves on serving gourmet standard food prepared exclusively with local ingredients.
Cooking is in their blood – the restaurant has been in their family for no less than three generations!
After what is sure to be a spectacular lunch, you will be driven back to your hotel to relax.
Tonight’s dinner will be in another of our favourite haunts – a local restaurant in the gorgeous village of Priego in the Córdoba province.
Day 4, Friday: Wine Tasting in the Mountains
Today we will be packing our bags and heading for our next stop in our culinary tour of Southern Spain – the stunning white village of Archidona.
On the way, we will stop for in for a late lunch in one of our favourite restaurants in Antequera, followed by a low-key couple of hours spent exploring this pretty mountain tow.
After we will head for a private visit and evening wine tasting at one of Malaga’s most enviably appointed bodegas – located at the bottom of the El Torcal nature reserve in the shadow of a spectacular mountain range.
After dinner at the bodega, you will be driven to your hotel for the next two nights, a charming converted farmhouse in the centre of Archidona.
The whole property has been rented for the sole use of your group – meaning you will have the run of the hotel and its facilities, which include a cosy reading nook, a sun terrace and an outdoor swimming pool.
Dinner this evening will be in nearby Antequera, in one of the town’s best kept culinary secrets!
Day 5, Saturday: Cooking in the Countryside
The final day of your Spanish culinary tour has arrived – so let’s make sure we go out with a bang!
This morning after breakfast you will be driven deep into the heart of Malaga’s natural parklands, the Montes de Malaga.
Here you will come across an idyllic rural hideaway surrounded by olive and almond groves – the site of today’s cooking class.
Tie on your apron as our expert cook guides you through the creation of yet another Spanish dish, which you will enjoy later on the terrace washed down with a few glasses of excellent local wine.
After a few hours relaxing back at your hotel, this evening’s pre-dinner activity will involve a private olive oil tasting led by a local producer.
Here you will sample Andalucia’s biggest export olive oil- and learn about its cultivation.
This will be hosted by a very special farewell dinner, hosted by a group of local housewives – and fantastic cooks- in the surroundings of a 19th-century olive mill. It’s sure to be a night to remember!
