All Tom Cruise movies, in order

Image of Jonathan Wright

It’s difficult to pinpoint what Tom Cruise really means to the history of blockbuster cinema, not just for his astounding body of work, but also for the range he puts on display, whether it be historical epics, action blockbusters, or even sci-fi spectacles.

With four Academy Award nominations, a career spanning five decades, and movies grossing over $11.5 billion worldwide, Tom Cruise is a titan of Hollywood and all it stands for . In fact, one could go so far as to suggest that as far as movie stars go, they don’t make them like this anymore. Cruise has the charisma and looks that would make any actor a commercial darling, but his acting chops and infamously crazy stunts also make him stand out.

The legendary thespian can be an action hero in a Mission: Impossible movie and then follow it up with a heart-wrenching performance like Born on the Fourth of July . He can be the lovable Jerry Maguire and then be as chilling as Vincent is in 2004’s Collateral . You name the role, and the chameleon that he is, Tom Cruise will be there to give his 100% and make it work.

But how many movies has he been in, and how many of them have you seen? Let’s take a look at Tom Cruise’s filmography to get a better understanding of his enviable career.

All the movies Tom Cruise has starred in, broken up by decade

The beloved Hollywood icon began his work with Endless Love and Taps , both released in 1981, but his most significant role from that era undoubtedly goes to Maverick in Top Gun .

  • The Outsiders (1983)
  • Losin’ It (1983)
  • Risky Business (1983)

Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson in 'A Few Good Men'

Now a genuine movie star, Tom Cruise had his pick of projects, which led to possibly the best decade of his career and the main reason he is now a household name all over the world. Outstanding performances from A Few Good Men , Jerry Maguire , and Eyes Wide Shut alongside the start of his Mission: Impossible saga make the Tom Cruise movies from the 1990s the most enjoyable ones to watch.

  • Days of Thunder (1990)
  • Far and Away (1992)
  • A Few Good Men (1992)
  • The Firm (1993)
  • Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)
  • Mission: Impossible (1996)
  • Jerry Maguire (1996)
  • Eyes Wide Shut (1999)
  • Magnolia (1999)

Tom Cruise in 'The Last Samurai'

Tom Cruise continued his 90s success into the 2000s with the critically acclaimed Vanilla Sky , the blockbuster sci-fi hit Minority Report, and the brilliant historical epic The Last Samurai .

  • Mission: Impossible II (2000)
  • Vanilla Sky (2001)
  • Minority Report (2002)
  • Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)
  • The Last Samurai (2003)
  • Collateral (2004)
  • War of the Worlds (2005)
  • Mission: Impossible III (2006)
  • Lions for Lambs (2007)
  • Tropic Thunder (2008)
  • Valkyrie (2008)

Tom Cruise and Vanessa Kirby in 'Mission: Impossible'

As Hollywood moved away from the idea of a global movie star and into the age of franchises like Marvel, actors like Tom Cruise became a rare commodity in the industry. Cruise still had the pull to rope in audiences, which he combined with his vast experience in producing, turning Mission: Impossible into a top-tier action franchise once again. He also starred in the now-cult classic Edge of Tomorrow . Duds like 2017’s The Mummy and two Jack Reacher movies were inevitable, of course, but he still ended the decade on a high note.

  • Knight and Day (2010)
  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
  • Rock of Ages (2012)
  • Jack Reacher (2012)
  • Oblivion (2013)
  • Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
  • Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
  • Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
  • The Mummy (2017)
  • American Made (2017)
  • Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Tom Cruise 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Well into his fifth decade as a professional actor, Tom Cruise is still going strong. His one-man mission to make a Top Gun sequel was a massive success, grossing nearly $1.5 billion worldwide and garnering a host of new fans, not to mention thawing the industry out of a Covid-induced daze.

These are Tom Cruise’s movies in the ongoing decade so far, discernibly lacking variety as well as multitude:

  • Top Gun: Maverick (2021)
  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
  • Untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film (2025)

That’s going to be it for Tom Cruise’s filmography, but since the star is showing no sign of slowing down, this list is only bound to get longer.

A Brief History of Tom Cruise’s Impressive Filmography

Image of Beverly Jenkins

Tom Cruise is such a staple in American cinema that it’s easy to take him for granted. Since the early 1980s, he’s been cranking out hit after hit, becoming one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors and consistently making blockbusters that shatter box office records.

In the past five decades, Cruise’s movies have grossed more than $11.5 billion worldwide. Oh, and he also does all his own stunts! The man himself may be an enigma, but there’s no denying the role he’s played in cinematic history.

In 2022, his return to the Top Gun universe even managed to lure pandemic-wary moviegoers back to theaters. Top Gun: Maverick grossed over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and became one of the highest-grossing movies in history. As a result, according to Variety , Steven Spielberg told Cruise he “saved Hollywood’s a** and [ … ] might have saved theatrical distribution.”

Cruise began his career like so many others, journeying to New York City to bus tables while trying to become an actor, eventually moving to the West Coast and signing with a talent agency. He got attention on sets right away, landing small roles in both Endless Love and Taps in 1981. The Hollywood Reporter states that Cruise’s role in Taps was expanded after director Harold Becker noticed the actor was “out-marching the other cadets on the parade field,” which totally fits everything we know about Cruise now!

All of Tom Cruise’s films, in order

Below is a list of all of the movies Cruise has made since he first boarded that Greyhound to NYC back in the early ’80s. Our favorites are in bold.

– Endless Love (1981)

– Taps (1981)

The Outsiders  (1983)

The Brat Pack posing for The Outsiders

Welcome to the Brat Pack! Cruise’s first big break came when he was selected to join the ensemble of The Outsiders , directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Cruise joined fellow young rising stars C. Thomas Howell, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane, yet he still managed to stand out on screen.

– Losin’ It (1983)

– Risky Business (1983)

This movie was transformative and really put Cruise on the map as a leading man. Who could forget the shirt-no-pants dance scene? Or the train scene with Rebecca De Mornay? Is it hot in here?

– All The Right Moves (1983)

– Legend (1985)

Tim Curry! A very young Mia Sara! David Bowie in a cod piece! This movie has it all.

Top Gun  (1986)

Kelly McGinnis leans over Tom Cruise's shoulder with American flag in background for Top Gun

You might have an inkling of how huge this movie was when it came out, but you’re probably underestimating it. Seriously, it was massive ! Money-wise, it grossed $357 million globally and was the highest-grossing domestic film of the year. Anecdotally, everyone was buying Ray-Bans and bomber jackets and rewinding that love scene with Kelly McGinnis until we wore out the VHS tape.

– The Color of Money (1986)

Just when we thought he couldn’t get more popular, he made a movie about shooting pool with Hollywood legend Paul Newman.

– Cocktail (1986)

– Rain Man (1988)

Born on the Fourth of July  (1989)

Tom Cruise as Ron Kovik in Born on the Fourth of July

Cruise won a Best Actor Golden Globe for his portrayal of Ron Kovic, a Vietnam veteran who co-wrote the biographical screenplay with director Oliver Stone. Cruise also received the first of four Academy Award nominations. His star was truly rising by now. People magazine named him 1990’s “Sexiest Man Alive.”

– Days of Thunder (1990)

– Far and Away (1992)

– A Few Good Men (1992)

Cruise and Jack Nicholson proved to be a riveting pair to watch on screen. “You can’t handle the truth!”

– The Firm (1993)

– Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994)

Audiences didn’t love him as Lestat, but the film was critically acclaimed nevertheless.

– Mission: Impossible (1996)

The movie that kicked off a billion dollar franchise!

– Jerry Maguire (1996)

“Show me the money!” Cruise received a second Golden Globe Award for Best Actor and a second Academy Award nomination for this romantic comedy, which co-starred Renee Zellweger.

– Eyes Wide Shut (1999)

– Magnolia (1999)

Tom Cruise as motivational speaker in Magnolia

Cruise earned a third Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of a motivational speaker, but he missed out on an Academy Award for a third time.

– Mission: Impossible II (2000)

– Vanilla Sky (2001)

– Minority Report (2002)

– Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002)

– The Last Samurai (2003)

– Collateral (2004)

– War of the Worlds (2005)

– Mission: Impossible III (2006)

– Lions for Lambs (2007)

– Tropic Thunder (2008)

An unrecognizable Cruise plays a ribald studio executive producer who was reportedly modeled after Harvey Weinstein.

– Valkyrie (2008)

– Knight and Day (2010)

– Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2001)

– Rock of Ages (2012)

– Jack Reacher (2012)

– Oblivion (2013)

– Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

– Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

– Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)

– The Mummy (2017)

– American Made (2017)

– Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Top Gun: Maverick  (2021)

In a scene from Maverick, Tom Cruise pumps his fist.

Maverick is back to fight unnamed U.S. enemies, romance an age-appropriate new love interest (Jennifer Connelly), and oh yeah, save Hollywood! With a cast full of easy-on-the-eyes new fly boys and girls, it’s easy to see why Top Gun: Maverick was such a smash hit .

– Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning (2023)

What’s next?

-Untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film (2025)

More Mission: Impossible movies … yay? Oh well, it’s not like we don’t have a ton of other movies in the Tom Cruise catalog to occupy our time. This guy sure has been busy for these past few decades!

How to Watch Mission Impossible Movies in Chronological Order

Catch up with ethan hunt and imf ahead of dead reckoning part two..

Jordan Sirani Avatar

In 1996, 30 years after the Mission: Impossible TV series first aired on CBS, Paramount Pictures recruited Tom Cruise to bring the franchise to the big screen. In the 27 years since, Cruise has led the franchise through seven spy films (soon to be eight) and a $4 billion USD box-office haul to rest comfortably among the best action franchises of all time.

Following the thrilling release of this year's Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One - and the highly-anticipated release of its direct sequel Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two next year - we've compiled a spoiler-free* list of every Mission Impossible movie ordered by narrative chronology and release date, from oldest to newest, so you can watch or re-watch the movies in their proper order.

  • How to watch in chronological order
  • How to watch by release order

Mission Impossible Movies in Order

With the series’ seventh and eighth movies on the horizon, we've compiled a spoiler-free list of every Mission Impossible movie ordered by narrative chronology and release date, from oldest to newest, so you can watch or re-watch the movies in their proper order.

How Many Mission Impossible Movies Are There?

There have been seven Mission: Impossible movies released since the series’ inception in 1996. An eighth is set to release next year on June 28 as well. See our guide on where to watch all Mission Impossible movies for streaming info on every film.

Mission Impossible Movies in Chronological Order

Following the Mission Impossible chronology is as easy as watching the movies in the order they were released: the narrative chronology follows the release order from 1996’s Mission Impossible to 2018’s Fallout.

The list below outlines the definitive order in which to watch the Mission Impossible movies. We've added broad plot overviews and information on each movie’s critical and commercial reception.

*The blurbs below contain character/actor names and broad plot overviews.

1. Mission: Impossible (1996)

tom cruise movies in order

1996’s Mission: Impossible introduced us to Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, a highly capable agent within the elite Impossible Mission Force (IMF) espionage agency. Hunt, believed to be a mole within the IMF, flees and sets out to discover the traitor’s true identity.

Jon Voight, Emmanuelle Béart, and Henry Czerny star alongside Cruise, as does the series’ most recurring support actor, Ving Rhames (Luther). It’s the only film in the franchise directed by Brian De Palma (Scarface).

2. Mission: Impossible II (2000)

tom cruise movies in order

Ethan Hunt returned four years later for Mission: Impossible 2 , a sequel that tasks the agent with recovering a dangerous bioweapon and its cure from the hands of a nefarious pharmaceutical company and its lackeys.

The sequel weaves another spy-thriller plot through explosive stuntwork, chase scenes, and the drama of blackmail and stolen identity. It’s the only movie in the series directed by action-film legend John Woo.

3. Mission: Impossible III (2006)

tom cruise movies in order

Mission: Impossible 3 introduces a love interest for Ethan in Michelle Monaghan’s Julia Meade. The plot sees Julia unwittingly mixed up in Ethan’s espionage work, which once again focuses on the recovery of a bioweapon.

Ving Rhames again reprises his role as Ethan’s trusted colleague Luther. Other cast members include Philip Seymour Hoffman, Billy Crudup, Keri Russell, Simon Pegg, and Laurence Fishburne.

Mission: Impossible III was J.J. Abrams’s feature-film directorial debut. It’s the only movie in the franchise he directed.

4. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

tom cruise movies in order

The first of the more-modern Mission Impossible movies, Ghost Protocol was a big success for Paramount, grossing nearly $700 million USD worldwide and earning 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another tale of deception with potentially earth-shattering consequences, Ghost Protocol tasks Ethan and co. with tracking down Russia’s stolen nuclear codes. The movie ends by setting up The Syndicate terrorist network as the next film’s big bad.

Ghost Protocol was directed by Brad Bird (The Incredibles). Cruise and Pegg returned from M:I 3 and were joined by newcomers Jeremy Renner and Paula Patton.

5. Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)

tom cruise movies in order

Christopher McQuarrie took over the franchise’s directorial duties with Rogue Nation and has held onto them since. A frequent collaborator of Tom Cruise’s, McQuarrie has made the two most critically acclaimed M:I movies and two of the three highest-grossing.

Rogue Nation is another globe-trotting spectacle filled with stuntwork and sabotage. This time around, Ethan Hunt faces off against The Syndicate, a shadowy terrorist organization set up at the end of Ghost Protocol.

Joining Cruise, Pegg, Renner, and Rhames in Rogue Nation are Rebecca Ferguson, Sean Harris, Simon McBurney, and Alec Baldwin.

6. Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

tom cruise movies in order

The previous new Mission Impossible entry is the franchise’s most critically and commercially successful film. Fallout features healthy servings of M:I’s staple ingredients — government conspiracies, double-crosses, bombastic set-pieces — but as stated in IGN’s review, the main draw is watching “Tom Cruise do his death-defying thing.”

The Syndicate, rebuilt as The Apostles, returns as the antagonist organization in Fallout. Ethan Hunt, accompanied by Henry Cavill’s August Walker, is tasked with recovering three plutonium cores to prevent the detonation of three nuclear bombs.

Cruise, Pegg, Rhames, Monaghan, Ferguson, Baldwin, and Harris all return from the series’ past, while Cavill leads a group of newcomers that includes Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, and Vanessa Kirby.

7. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

tom cruise movies in order

As the newest title in the Mission Impossible series, Dead Reckoning Part 1 brings new stunts, cast members, and all of the action you'd expect. Directed by Christopher McQuerrie and led by the ridiculous stunts of Tom Cruise, it's one of the best movies in the series to date.

The story follows Ethan Hunt and his team embark on a dangerous mission to track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity. Confronted by a mysterious and all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to weigh the importance of his mission over the lives of the people he cares about most.

The new cast members added to Dead Reckoning include Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Shea Whigham, Esai Morales, Indira Varma, Cary Elwes, and Mark Gatiss. You can expect Dead Reckoning Part 2 to arrive sometime in 2024. Box Office: $567,535,383 (Rank: 4/7) | Rotten Tomatoes Score: 96% (Rank: 2/7)

Upcoming Mission Impossible Movies

Mission: impossible – dead reckoning part two (2024).

Dead Reckoning Part Two will be a direct sequel to Dead Reckoning Part One. It’s scheduled to be released just shy of a year later on June 28, 2024.

How to Watch Mission: Impossible Movies In Order

If you want to watch the Mission: Impossible movies in order and see Ethan Hunt get in his daily steps, fall from high up, take a deep breath, defy mask policy, catch a plane, and kick ass and chew bubblegum (he gets them from the IMF snack room), you can watch the movies as they released, no prequel plotting here.

  • Mission: Impossible (1998)
  • Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)
  • Mission: Impossible III (2006)
  • Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
  • Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
  • Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
  • Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)

Now, if you’re new to the series, do you actually need to watch all the Mission: Impossible movies in order? If you were a big fan of the original TV series , you’d probably give a bellowing NO, since the 1996 Mission: Impossible movie re-introduced the Jim Phelps hero role and then gave him a thoroughly impressive character assassination. But that’s just director Brian de Palma taking the piss out of the blockbuster and Tom Cruise taking the reins of the IP on his own terms.

So the first M:I movie is a perfectly good place to start if you’ve never seen the TV show, likely since it’s over 50 years old at this point. It’s also more of a spy thriller — all dense plotting and subdued action, but with an explosive set piece or two that would become the series’ trademark. There isn’t really an overarching story to Mission: Impossible until the latter-half of the franchise, but this movie does introduce support characters like hacker Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames, who’s appeared in every movie) and then-IMF director Eugene Kittridge, who returns for Dead Reckoning .

Mission: Impossible 2 is the most skippable of the series, both in story and quality. Anyone who’s seen director John Woo’s Hong Kong stuff will likely find this one more palatable, believing that a man can fly and motorcycles can duel.

Cruise hand-picked J.J. Abrams to direct a soft reboot for Mission: Impossible III , which expands more of Hunt’s IMF team (including Simon Pegg’s Benji) and introduces Michelle Monaghan as Ethan’s fiancée Julia.

For the fourth Impossible , Ghost Protocol , Cruise made another unlikely choice for director: Brad Bird, making his live-action debut. This is where the series really establishes itself in the upper echelon of action filmmaking, and set the standard for death-defying practical stunts for each release.

Disney Pixar movie "Inside Out 2."

When you think of theatrical animation, only one name immediately comes to mind: Pixar. For close to three decades, the Disney-acquired studio has captivated our collective imagination with highly relatable fables concerning humanity, ambition, regret, loss, resilience, bravery, acceptance and more. They single-handedly changed the game, ushering in a new era of 3D-rendered storytelling.

Pixar’s acclaimed library of 27 features (soon to be 28 with the release of Inside Out 2 this summer) contains a little something for everyone. Want to see what your childhood toys get up to when you’re not around? They’ve got you covered. Jonesing for a classic superhero story in the vein of Marvel’s First Family ? Yep, they’ve got that too! Fancy a trip to the Italian Coast? Pack your bags!

Toy Story (1995)

A bug’s life (1998), toy story 2 (1999), monsters, inc. (2001), finding nemo (2002), the incredibles (2004), cars (2006), ratatouille (2007), wall-e (2008), toy story 3 (2010), cars 2 (2011), brave (2012), monsters university (2013), inside out (2015), the good dinosaur (2015), finding dory (2016), cars 3 (2017), coco (2017), incredibles 2 (2018), toy story 4 (2019), onward (2020), soul (2020), luca (2021), turning red (2022), lightyear (2022), elemental (2023).

Thanks to Pixar’s penchant for referencing past and upcoming movies by way of little Easter eggs (i.e. a Pizza Planet truck in A Bug’s Life or a Nemo toy in Monsters, Inc. ), fans have come to wonder if all of the studio’s movies take place within the same shared universe . Pixar has never confirmed the theory, meaning you can watch the films in any order you please, save for the sequels and odd prequel. All 27 titles are currently streaming on Disney+.

Is Leadership an Art or a Science

Apple confirms innovative iphone 16 pro upgrade, wwe smackdown results winners and grades after wrestlemania 40.

Framed as the movie that inspired Andy’s favorite member of Space Command, Lightyear stars Chris Evans (of Captain America fame) as the intrepid Space Ranger. Despite the sizable brand recognition and positive reviews from critics (it currently holds a 74% score on Rotten Tomatoes ), this grand, sci-fi prelude to the Toy Story universe failed to make a serious dent at the worldwide box office . Hell, it wasn’t even nominated for an Academy Award!

The movie that started a 3D-animated revolution. What is there to say about Toy Story that hasn’t already been said? It’s an absolute classic, with iconic turns from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as the clashing cowboy (Woody) and spaceman (Buzz Lightyear), respectively. The story — no pun intended — is so elegantly universal, masterfully answering the question of what our childhood play-things get up to when we’re not around. That’s for the kiddos. The adults, on the other hand, get to grapple with the existential question of what it means to exist. The movie was so groundbreaking, in fact, that the Academy had to give it a Special Achievement Oscar (the Best Animated Feature prize wouldn’t come into existence until the release of Shrek several years later). Toy Story nabbed critical acclaim (it holds a rare 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes ) and made close to $400 million globally .

An insectoid take on Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai , A Bug’s Life follows a colony of ants who decide to recruit a pack of “warrior bugs” in the hopes of repelling the swarm of locusts they’re forced to feed every summer. What the colony doesn’t know is that their scout, hapless inventor Flick (Dave Foley), has unknowingly hired a troupe of harmless circus performers. Definitely one of Pixar’s more underrated films, A Bug’s Life grossed $363 million worldwide and holds a 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes .

Pixar’s very first sequel, Toy Story 2 grapples with heavy theme of obsolescence and the loss of innocence. When he’s accidentally sold at a yard sale to an unscrupulous toy salesman (Wayne Knight), a damaged Woody decides that immortality as a priceless collectible in a Japanese museum is better than being discarded by your kid. Thankfully, a rescue mission led by Buzz helps the sheriff come to his senses. Grossing nearly half a billion dollars at the global box office , Toy Story 2 was another critical and financial success for the studio. The sequel also introduced fan favorite characters like Jessie (Joan Cusack) and Bullseye into the growing canon.

Before they became best friends and broke the all-time “Scare Record” in Monsters, Inc. , Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) were academic rivals. While most fans of the Monsters, Inc. mythos would probably have preferred a direct sequel (one that gave us a tearful reunion between Sulley and Boo), Monsters University is still a great time (think Sky High , but with monsters) and a surefire way to make anyone a little nostalgic for their own college days. Holding an 80% score on Rotten Tomatoes , the prequel grossed $743 million worldwide .

Preceding short: For the Birds

A wildly imaginative fable of friendship, ambition and not judging a book by its cover, Monsters, Inc. flips the age-old childhood fear of “there’s a monster in my closet” on its head. That beastie hiding amidst your sweaters and slithering under the bed is just as afraid of you as you are of it. Genius concept! In a parallel reality where monsters rely on the screams of children for power, two blue-collar “Scarers” — Mike and Sulley — learn that there’s nothing to fear from humans when a little girl named Boo accidentally finds her way into their world. Monsters, Inc. grossed $579 million globally and holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It was also the first Pixar project to be nominated for the newly-created Best Animated Feature Oscar, though it lost to Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away .

Preceding short: Knick Knack

An aquatic odyssey worthy of Steve Zissou, Finding Nemo ranks among Pixar’s greatest creations. Albert Brooks leads the voice cast as an anxiety-riddled and overprotective clownfish named Marlin, who sets off on an oceanic adventure to rescue his only child, Nemo (Alexander Gould), from an Australian scuba diver/dentist. Helping Marlin on his journey is a happy-go-lucky blue tang with severe memory loss named Dory (Ellen DeGeneres). The film grossed $940 million at the worldwide box office and holds a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It was also the first Pixar released to win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

A love letter to golden age comic books and ‘60s-era spy capers, The Incredibles has been described as an inspired riff on Marvel’s Fantastic Four. The second animated feature from director Brad Bird ( The Iron Giant ), the movie follows a family of super-powered individuals forced to conceal their abilities due to government legislation. Longing for the glory days of crime-fighting, Bob Parr (Craig T. Nelson), aka Mr. Incredible, takes on some freelance work and discovers a conspiracy to eliminate former superheroes. The film grossed $631 million at the worldwide box office , has a near-perfect score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes , and the won Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Ka-Chow! An egotistical race car named Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) gets a lesson in humility from a small community of easygoing vehicles along the famous Route 66. Cars grossed over $461 million worldwide and holds a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 79th Academy Awards, but ended up losing to Happy Feet .

A gastronomy-loving rat named Remy (Patton Oswalt) lives out of his dream of becoming a chef by teaming up with a bumbling new hire at a fancy Parisian eatery. The second Pixar effort helmed by Brad Bird, Ratatouille grossed $623 million globally and holds a near-perfect score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes . It nabbed the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 80th Academy Awards.

A lone, trash-compacting robot finds love (and a way to save the planet) on a post-apocalyptic Earth. An allegory for combatting pollution and climate change, WALL-E made $521 million at the box office and holds a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature and became the first Pixar title selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Preceding short: Partly Cloudy

Scarred by the premature death of his wife decades before, curmudgeon Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) learns to re-embrace the world when he decides to move his entire house to South America with a large collection of balloons. The less said about the movie’s heartbreaking — and totally wordless — introduction, the better. I’m not quite ready for a good cry at the moment. Up nabbed $735 million globally , a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes , and Best Animated Feature at the 82nd Academy Awards.

Preceding short: Day & Knight

The long-awaited trilogy capper in the Toy Story saga was something special. As Andy prepares to move away to college, his childhood toys are accidentally donated to a local preschool. Reinforcing the previous movie’s themes of abandonment and having to let go of the past, Toy Story 3 really hit home for longtime fans who were now coming of age themselves. The third installment grossed $1 billion worldwide and holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It nabbed the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature at the 83rd Oscars, beating out the likes of How to Train Your Dragon .

Preceding short: Hawaiian Vacation

Lightning, Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) and the rest of the wheeled Cars crew go international in this sophomore installment, which centers around the World Grand Prix, a contest to determine the fastest vehicle alive. Mater’s not racing, but he does get a chance to flex his espionage pistons alongside the suave Finn McMissile (Michael Caine). Cars 2 revved up $559 million at the box office but received a score of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes , the lowest rating of any Pixar movie to date.

Preceding short: La Luna

“If you had the chance to change your fate... would you?” Boardwalk Empire star Kelly Macdonald leads Brave as Merida, a Scottish princess courageous enough to defy centuries of tradition. The film grossed $538 million globally and holds a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It also won Best Animated Feature at the 85th Oscars.

A young girl’s emotions attempt to help her cope with a move to San Francisco. Make sure you’ve got a box of tissues nearby for this one, folks. Inside Out made $858 million globally and holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It also took home the Oscar for Best Animated Feature at the 88th Academy Awards.

Preceding short: Sanjay's Super Team

Set in a reality where that huge asteroid never killed off the dinosaurs, The Good Dinosaur tracks the budding friendship between an Apatosaurus named Arlo (Raymond Ochoa) and a human child. Basically Pixar’s answer to The Land Before Time , the movie is often considered the black sheep of the studio’s cherished library. It grossed $332 million worldwide and holds a 75% score on Rotten Tomatoes .

Preceding short: Piper

A semi-unnecessary sequel, Finding Dory follows the impaired blue tang as she sets out to find her long-lost parents. The maritime follow-up netted over $1 billion worldwide and a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes . Interestingly, though, it was not nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 89th Academy Awards, but Disney still took home the prize with Zootopia .

Preceding short: Lou

When a new generation of racers threatens to end his career, Lighting McQueen turns to an unconventional technician and trainer named Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo) for help. Cars 3 crossed the finish line with $383 million at the box office and a 69% score on Rotten Tomatoes .

“ Remember me... ” A wondrous and emotional celebration of Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), Coco follows Miguel (Anthony Gonzalez), a 12-year-old boy and aspiring guitarist who embarks on an adventure through the Land of the Dead, discovering new things about his family and musical hero in the process. The film grossed $814 million globally and holds a 97% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It also won Best Animated Feature at the 90th Academy Awards.

Preceding short: Bao

The long-awaited sequel picks up where the first movie left off: with the Parr family squaring off against the subterranean baddie known as The Underminer. The ensuing battle results in costly damage to the city, which only underscores why it was necessary to ban superheroes all those years ago. Their only shot at getting back into the spotlight is a PR campaign spearheaded by business tycoon, Winston Deaver (Bob Odenkirk) and his sister, Evelyn (Catherine Keener). Grossing over $1 billion globally , Incredibles 2 holds a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It lost out on the Best Animated Feature Oscar to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse .

A somewhat unnecessary, yet stunningly-rendered sequel, Toy Story 4 is a prime example of how far Pixar has come over the years in terms of crafting lifelike animation. When Bonnie (Madeleine McGraw) creates a homemade toy named “Forky” (a hilarious Tony Hale), Woody begins to reevaluate his place in the world, questioning whether he needs to move from child-to-child for the rest of his immortal life. The movie, which brought back the character of Bo Peep (Annie Potts), garnered critical acclaim , over $1 billion at the box office , and an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Set in a world of fantasy creatures, Onward centers around two elven brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt respectively), who get a chance to spend one more day with their late father by way of some long-forgotten magic. Released into theaters just before the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the film only grossed $141 million worldwide . It holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 93rd Oscars, but lost to another Pixar title: Soul .

With movie theaters still closed at the time of its scheduled release date, Soul became the first Pixar film to make its debut on a streaming platform (Disney+). The studio’s most existential outing to date, the original story follows middle-school band teacher Joe Gardner (Jamie Foxx) hoping to become a professional jazz musician. Just as he’s about to get his big break, however, Joe falls down an open manhole and finds himself in The Great Before, a plane of existence where souls gain their personality traits before they’re sent to Earth to be born. Hoping to return to his body, Joe teams up with a precocious soul named 22 (Tina Fey), who doesn’t see the point in having a life. Soul received critical acclaim , $121 million at the box office , and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

“ Silencio Bruno!” The second Pixar movie to hit Disney+ amidst the pandemic, Luca brings audiences to the picturesque coast of Italy where two sea monsters — Luca (Jacob Tremblay) and Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer) — attempt to pass themselves off as humans in a village full of people who would like nothing more than to spear themselves some creatures of the deep. Eventually grossing $50 million globally , Luca holds a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes . It lost out on the Best Animated Feature at the 94th Academy Awards to another Disney release: Encanto .

Helmed by Domee Shi (Oscar-winner behind the Pixar short “Bao”), Turning Red follows a dorky 13-year-old girl named Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) who discovers that the women in her family become giant red pandas when they get overexcited. It holds a near-perfect score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 95th Oscars, but lost out to Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson’s stop-motion Pinocchio . Given that it was initially released as a streaming exclusive on Disney+, Turning Red has only grossed $21 million to date .

Preceding short: Carl's Date

Continuing the grand Pixar tradition of “What if this inanimate entity had feelings?” Elemental takes place in a bustling, metropolitan city populated by sentient beings made of Fire, Earth, Water and Air. An allegory for immigration and xenophobia, the film centers around a pair of star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the tracks — Ember (Leah Lewis) and Wade (Mamoudou Athie) — who gradually fall in love, defying years of segregation and cultural ire between the communities of Fire and Water. The film grossed $496 million at the worldwide box office and currently holds a score of 73% on Rotten Tomatoes . It was also nominated for an Oscar at the 96th Academy Awards, but lost out to Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song: The Boy and the Heron .

Inside Out 2 (June 14, 2024)

The sequel to 2015’s Inside Out catches back up with Riley (Kensington Tallman) in her early teens. This change-filled arrival at the doorstep of adolescence spells doom for our favorite band of feelings — Joy (Amy Poehler), Anger (Lewis Black), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Tony Hale taking over from Bill Hader) and Digust (Liza Lapira taking over from Mindy Kaling) — who find themselves muscled out of control by several newcomers: Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Ennui (Adèle Exarchopoulos), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser) and Envy (Ayo Edebiri).

Elio (June 13, 2025)

Elio follows an imaginative young boy (Yonas Kibreab) who finds himself mistaken for Earth’s ambassador by an interplanetary organization known as the Communiverse. “Completely unprepared for that kind of pressure, Elio must form new bonds with eccentric alien lifeforms, survive a series of formidable trials and somehow discover who he is truly meant to be,” reads the official synopsis. America Ferrera (Olga, Elio’s mother), Jameela Jamil (Ambassador Questa), and Brad Garrett (Ambassador Grigon) round out the prinicipal voice cast.

Toy Story 5 (June 19, 2026)

Pixar Animation Studios’ “Pixar Popcorn” is a collection of mini shorts featuring Pixar characters ... [+] in all-new, bite-size stories, including “To Fitness and Beyond,” featuring favorites from “Toy Story 4.”

Announced last year during an earnings call with Disney CEO Bob Iger, Toy Story 5 is still shrouded in a great deal of mystery. All we know for certain is that A) Pixar has reached out to Tim Allen and Tom Hanks in the hopes that they will reprise Buzz and Woody and B) the sequel will open in theaters on June 19, 2026 .

Cars 4 (TBD)

Pixar Animation Studios’ “Pixar Popcorn” is a collection of mini shorts featuring Pixar characters ... [+] in all-new, bite-size stories, including “Unparalleled Parking,” featuring favorites from “Cars.”

While not officially confirmed by the studio just yet, a potential fourth chapter in the Cars franchise was teased by Jay Ward, Pixar’s Creative Director of Franchise, in 2023. “There are more Cars things brewing,” he told The Late Break Show . “I can’t quite say what yet, but Cars has a life that will keep going. I’m working on some really funny projects right now that you will see in the next couple years.”

Despite the fact that Pixar’s status as the leading name in blockbuster animation has slightly waned over the years, its historic influence on the industry at large cannot be understated. Without the studio’s trailblazing innovations paving the way for close to three decades, we wouldn’t have such modern classics as The LEGO Movie or Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse . Not a bad legacy to have. Not bad at all.

Every Movie in the Tom Ripley Series, Ranked

Which take on Mr. Ripley was the most talented?

Tom Ripley fever may well have hit a peak in 2024, with a new miniseries about the infamous con artist called Ripley debuting on Netflix to a high level of acclaim . This is a character and a story that has had its fair share of movie adaptations in the past, but this continual retelling of a familiar narrative is never objected to too greatly, given how engaging and relevant much of the content remains. It also helps that the Tom Ripley book series, written by Patricia Highsmith , has five entries within it, each involving Ripley getting involved in some kind of new messy situation, then scheming and/or murdering his way out of the troubles he gets himself into.

Coincidentally, there are also five movies that have served as adaptations for the series , but not every movie adapts a different book. Of the five novels in Highsmith's series, two have actually never received major movie adaptations: the last two: The Boy Who Followed Ripley (1980) and Ripley Under Water (1991), the latter being published four years before Highsmith passed away. Of the other three, the first novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley , forms the basis for the aforementioned TV show. It's also had two film adaptations, the second novel, Ripley Under Ground , has one adaptation, and the third novel, Ripley's Game , has two. Those five movies are ranked below, starting with the decent and ending with the great.

5 'Ripley Under Ground' (2005)

Director: roger spottiswoode.

This take on Ripley doesn’t lack talent entirely, but it is quite easy to single out as the least compelling of all the movies to feature Tom Ripley, and certainly the most obscure, too. Released in 2005, Ripley Under Ground is also the most recent film adaptation of one of the books from the series, and the only feature film version of the novel of the same name. Ripley Under Ground takes place some years on from The Talented Mr. Ripley , with the premise involving Tom engaging in a scheme to get rich by covering up the death of one of his friends: a talented painter, and then selling his artworks himself.

Despite the obscurity, Ripley Under Ground does have some fairly well-known names attached to it, with Barry Pepper playing the lead role (perhaps a little miscast) and the supporting cast including the likes of Tom Wilkinson , Willem Dafoe , and Alan Cumming . It functions as a somewhat competent thriller , and it’s unlikely too many people will find it abhorrent in terms of quality… though it is ultimately disappointing as an adaptation of a story in this acclaimed series, and the other four films about Tom Ripley – all of which were released before 2005 – are noticeably superior.

4 'Ripley’s Game' (2002)

Director: liliana cavani.

It might not quite be criminally good , and it’s also not the best version of Ripley’s Game , but 2002’s Ripley’s Game is still compelling and a worthy cinematic take on the source material. It’s hard to call it one part of a movie series, necessarily, because no actor has played the character of Tom Ripley more than once on-screen (this could change if 2024’s Ripley has more than one season, because Andrew Scott would likely return to the role). But, at the same time, having a different actor play a familiar and distinctive character is interesting, with John Malkovich bringing his typically offbeat and sometimes unsettling energy to the role with success.

Malkovich’s Ripley is a little older than most other depictions of the character, but he makes it work, and it also feels logical with this being the third story in the series; the character should naturally have matured a little. Ripley’s Game sees Tom Ripley being even more in control and manipulative than ever before, convincing a dying man to become a hitman, after an old associate of Ripley’s asks for a rival to be killed. Befitting the title, Ripley treats the whole thing like a game and seems to enjoy the power he holds more than ever before , giving the film a consistent sense of tension and uneasiness that makes it a compelling psychological thriller.

3 'The American Friend' (1977)

Director: wim wenders.

Given it’s also an adaptation of Ripley’s Game , The American Friend follows roughly the same premise as that aforementioned 2002 movie, but feels distinctive enough in several ways to stand on its own. It might be the most unusual and unexpected of all the adaptations, with legendary German filmmaker Wim Wenders showing himself to be unafraid of mixing things up in certain regards . For one thing, Dennis Hopper as Tom Ripley might be the most unusual or unexpected actor to play the character to date, given Hopper often excels in larger-than-life roles, and Ripley tends to be more measured and someone who doesn’t necessarily want to showcase large emotions.

Hopper makes it work, somehow, though, and ends up being a great Ripley alongside fellow acting legend Bruno Ganz , who also famously appeared in Wenders’ Wings of Desire (1987), and here plays the dying man turned hitman that Ripley manipulates. The American Friend takes its time and certainly feels slow during some scenes, but nevertheless always builds tension and proves able to keep one’s interest, so long as they don’t mind a slow burn. When it gets to the more intense sequences, the payoffs prove worth the build-up, and the film overall is atmospheric, excellently acted, and perfectly suspenseful.

2 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' (1999)

Director: anthony minghella.

1999’s The Talented Mr. Ripley is likely the Tom Ripley movie most are familiar with, and that’s okay, because it’s undoubtedly one of the best and perhaps the most approachable. For anyone new to the series who wants to explore it through the movie adaptations, The Talented Mr. Ripley is an excellent starting point, being an adaptation of the first book and being arguably the clearest and most straightforward of the films. Narratively, it excels in introducing Tom Ripley and his obsession with another young man called Dickie Greenleaf , and the consequences of what happens when the two grow close and then have a dramatic fallout.

Ripley engages in the sort of conman behavior that defines his character in later stories, but there’s a sense of messiness to it all here, with Tom being young and not as experienced when it comes to things like lying, murder, and stealing identities. It was a key role for Matt Damon , further showing the depths he had as an actor in much the same way Good Will Hunting did, and the supporting cast of The Talented Mr. Ripley is also great, including the likes of Jude Law , Gwyneth Paltrow , Cate Blanchett , and Philip Seymour Hoffman . It’s proven to be an influential movie that does justice to an influential and groundbreaking crime/thriller novel, and has aged extremely well in the quarter-century since its release.

1 'Purple Noon' (1960)

Director: rené clément.

The first of all the Tom Ripley adaptations, 1960’s Purple Noon , arguably remains the best, even after more than six decades. It came out just five years after the original The Talented Mr. Ripley was published, and so it also narratively centers on the same basic premise found in the 1999 film of the same name. It’s all about Tom, his relationship with Dickie, and the drastic change Tom experiences in his life after their brief friendship comes to a violent conclusion.

Purple Noon is a French release, and perhaps it was that country’s willingness to push things a little further when it came to things like adult themes and violence that made the film work so well, and feel quite revolutionary for a 1960s release . It might not seem too confronting nowadays, but it’s easy to imagine it being more of a shock to the system for many back in 1960 . It’s also the nicest-looking of all the movies about Tom Ripley, having a richness and bold use of color that gives the visuals a timeless quality, and, of course, the untouchable Alain Delon is fantastic as Tom Ripley; perhaps the definitive portrayal of the character on the silver screen to date.

Tom Cruise Comments On The 'Weirdest' On Set 'Mission: Impossible' Rumor: Are People Allowed To...

Posted: April 7, 2024 | Last updated: April 7, 2024

There are major movie stars, and then there’s Tom Cruise. The 61 year-old A-lister is showing no signs of slowing down. Cruise recently commented on the “weirdest” rumor about his behavior on the set of "MI." Namely, are people allowed to look him in the eye during filming? Once you’re an A-list celebrity, you can demand or request a variety of things in order to properly get your work done. There are rumors that celebrities like Ellen Degeneres don’t want actors or crew members looking them in the eye on set, presumably to help maintain focus. Tom Cruise has seemingly heard those rumors about him, and actually name dropped them in an interview with The Times about his public image. After claiming they were the “weirdest” rumor he’d heard about himself, his "Mission: Impossible" co-star Simon Pegg came to his defense.
