Select a year

  • Lows Interior marred by subpar materials, anemic passing power on the highway, bouncy ride on uneven roads.
  • Verdict Agility and versatility converge with the Transit Connect city van, but don't expect a plush experience.

What's New for 2022?

For 2022, Ford doesn't make any significant changes to the Transit Connect lineup. The city van is now only available with the turbocharged 2.0-liter in-line four-cylinder engine as the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine has been discontinued. Buyers can still pick between a short or long wheelbase and a cargo van or a passenger van body configuration.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Ford Transit Connect starts at $30,760 and goes up to $37,455 depending on the trim and options.

The beauty of the Transit Connect is that it can be configured and outfitted to meet a variety of needs. We think the mid-level XLT model is the best value. Compared with the base model, it adds a standard touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in navigation, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Every XLT also has blind-spot monitoring and rear-cross-traffic alert. The only individual options we'd add are adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, lane-keeping assist, and passive entry. The Trailer Tow package is also a worthy upgrade because it unlocks the van's 2000-pound towing capacity.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Transit Connect offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 162 horsepower and pairs with an eight-speed automatic. The Transit Connect can tow up to 2000 pounds and carry a maximum payload of 1570 pounds. The last long-wheelbase model we drove was equipped with the discontinued 2.5-liter four-cylinder and felt very agile around town thanks to its accurate steering and well-controlled body motions. However, it was bouncy while driving over uneven pavement and had irregular tracking on the highway.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The EPA rates the 2022 Ford Transit Connect at up to 24 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The Ford's only other direct competitor is the Ram ProMaster City , which is rated at 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Since we haven't tested the Ford nor the Ram on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route—part of our extensive testing regimen —we are unable to report on their real-world mpg. For more information about the Transit Connect's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Transit Connect's front seat will look familiar regardless of whether it's in the cargo or passenger van. The latter can be had with a third row that enables seating for up to seven. Every model has a low seating height that emulates a car rather than a truck or crossover. The dashboard incorporates an ergonomic center stack that features physical controls for the climate control and infotainment system. The cargo van offers up to 127 cubic feet of cargo volume, while the passenger van provides up to 105 cubes with the second and third rows folded. Desirable options include dual-zone automatic climate control and wireless charging.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Although the base model features an archaic infotainment system with a single USB port, every Transit Connect is available with a more contemporary touchscreen unit that supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. Those who want even more equipment can add a better audio system, a single-disc CD player, and wireless device charging.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Overall safety rating (nhtsa).

While some driver-assistance technology is standard, the rest of the roster costs extra. For more information about the Transit Connect's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Although Ford provides a competitive limited and powertrain warranty, the automaker doesn't offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

Highway and Road Trip Travel - Transit vs. Large SUV like Ford Expedition Max?

  • Add to quote

Can those of who have driven a Transit Passenger Wagon and an Expedition Max please share your thoughts on how the two compare in highway/road trip travel - interior noise, stability, tracking, comfort? We are considering purchasing a 148" Medium Roof or 148" High Roof or 148" Extended High Roof Passenger Van. This would give us the flexibility to use the vehicle for overnight camping, which we would probably do 15-20 days/year. We really like the idea of the Transit as hard-shelled, stand-up tent, and the Expedition is a distant 2nd for this usage. However, not having owned a Transit Wagon, we wonder how well it does for Highway and Road Trip travel compared to a large SUV like the Expedition Max. If the Transit Wagon is comparable to the Expedition for Highway and Road Trip Travel, we would go with the Transit Wagon and be glad to have the flexibility the Transit gives for overnight camping. However, if the Expedition Max is way better for Highway and Road Trip travel, which is around 25% of our usage, we would probably lean that direction. Thank you! P.S. We would be open to suspension upgrades to the Transit if that makes a big difference, and we are considering aftermarket rear seats for more comfort.

I don't have an Expedition Max to compare to, but I can tell you that I love driving my Ford Transit high roof (not extended) with EcoBoost engine . And I prefer it over our Subaru Ascent 3-row SUV. Both have great turbo engines, but the Ford pulls harder and smoother and has better shifting (Subaru CVT transmission is awful). The van is pretty amazing for an 8,000+ lb. vehicle (campervan build). A few buddies and I just drove from Alberta to San Francisco (via Glacier NP, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Craters of the Moon) and everyone was pleasantly surprised with how enjoyable the van was (great stability, plenty of power, smooth tracking, comfortable). The only negative is driving in areas with high cross winds (wind noise, whistling, and more effort required to keep the van moving straight and smooth). Other considerations you might think about are gas mileage and - as you mentioned - seat comfort (which can vary greatly by individual person).

Thank you. Comparison to the Ascent is a good frame of reference.

1) Transit seats suck. For an airport shuttle they are fine, but for a road tripping vehicle they are terrible. I haven't driven an Expedition, but I can't imagine it's seating is close to as bad as the Transit's. 2) Unless the Transit is heavily loaded (like close to it's max GVWR that would come from converting it to a camper van) the rear suspension is terribly harsh. For a family of four without the extra seats installed, we have only gotten satisfactory plushness when the van was completely loaded with camping gear and bikes cantilevered off the rear trailer hitch. 3) If you are interested in my 2020 HR Passenger XLT that will be available soon in my signature, ignore 1) and 2) above. It's a FANTASTIC road trip van. (And in fact we'll be taking it on a 2000 mile trip through Moab for Thanksgiving)

FonzieScheme said: I bolded a couple key areas. The Expedition is based on the F150. I haven‘t driven the Max, but have owned several Ford trucks (most recently a 2018 F150) and a couple of Transits (current 2023 high roof cargo AWD). I’m surprised no one has straight up gone off on this yet: these vehicles are not in the same universe in terms of comfort and noise. Stability / tracking? Both are fine (and you can improve the Transit, as you’ve alluded to) though the Expedition will be way better off the lot. The truck chassis is rock-solid and comfy on the road and won’t be susceptible to high winds the way a Transit will be. It’s noise and comfort where the truck-based Expedition will be head and shoulders above the Transit. Sure, you can deaden the noise with a bunch of work/material/expense but the cockpit of the Transit is cramped and even upgrading the seats can’t change that. There are other bits ‘n’ bobs too: it can be tough to manage temps on warm or hot days, for example. The windshield is basically a big heater so I often have to run the AC pretty high to keep from getting too warm. I basically end up going back and forth between cool breeze / cold wind and radiant heat. Remember, the Transit is at its core a cargo van, while the Expedition is basically a luxury car built on a solid, stable truck chassis. It comes down to your priorities. If you care more about high comfort levels for the 25% of the time you’re on the road, you can’t beat the Expedition. But the Expedition will never do what the Transit can do, what you’ve described as a “hard-shelled, stand-up tent.” Click to expand...

I own a HR EXT Ecoboost, and i've also driven a 2000 Excursion on road trips and 2019 F350 around town. Transit would be my choice. The transit, aside from backing up(visibility), is one of the easiest vehicles i've driven. The transit ride is going to be softer, since the expedition is going to have a truck chassis like others have pointed out. Seats will be better in the expedition, and much larger. The longer hood and smaller windows on the expedition will reduce visibility. I would add digital rear view camera on ether one. Depending on which height/length transit will determine if the stability/handling of which is better. Fuel economy is going to be roughly the same. Power will be the same if you get the Ecoboost in the transit.

On our trip the last couple weeks, we talked about this. A full size delivery van isn't the most comfortable or economic thing to drive long distances. SUVs are made for comfort (full size pickups, too). Using just economics as the guideline, buying a travel-ready full size delivery van for about $75-90k vs driving an older but reliable and more comfortable vehicle that cost $30k to acquire leaves $50k-ish left to pay for motels, or gas if you have a pickup with a camper on it. That's about 300 motel nights. How often do you stay in your van? 30 nights a year? That's 10 years of motels. Adjust to fit your van-night tally. Two months a year? That's 5 years of motels. Ok, you want to boondock where there aren't any motels, preferably because you hate people, and not because you're a cheapskate that doesn't want to pay for motels (Venn diagram would have me being overlapped by both). A van is a good iron tent for such purposes, so you can overlook the rough ride and crappy mpg. Not paying for a room makes up for it. Points awarded to House Van. However, a pickup that without it's camper gets 25+ mpg but when campered gets the same as a full size delivery van might be a better economic choice. However, the cost of the camper at $10k used $50k+ new negates any advantage. Trailer would be the same issue, plus the extra hassle of towing. And another thing, sometimes you have to pay to camp, so there's that. Years ago I said the idea cross country trip would be a convertible sportscar, one carry-on each, and a credit card. All rooms and meals purchased instead of DIY'd. Laundry once a week, or buy new clothes as needed. Now I'm not so sure. We (she) decided a good ratio would be 2-1, vanning/motel. When I say "motel" it encompasses motels, hotels, resorts, air BnB, etc. I'd prefer a 3 or 4 to 1 ratio, depending on location and time of year. If it's just me, a week or two just in the van would be fine. I don't have 30" long hair to wash, I can hose off and clean up very well with just a gallon or water, standing on a rock by the back doors.

Thank you. We are leaning toward the MR 148 if we do this. Seems like just enough roof. I don't know if I want to do the Extended for a daily driver.

These vans from the factory are pretty quiet and decently smooth. If you are not bringing the heavy loads with you then play with tire pressure to smooth out your ride. I'm a fan of the visibility out of the van and when you can also sleep and stand up or carry big stuff, the utility is nice as well. Since you are willing to upgrade the seats, you'll really be loving it after that. The taller Transits do not fit in parking garages, some drive throughs or car washes so keep that in mind. Given the choice of the two, I'd go van but you are on a van forum and you will find many are partial to their rigs.

Thank you. Appreciate knowing they are pretty quiet and decently smooth from the factory.

They make clear and dark uv windshield tint. Add a high strip if needed.

The Transit windshield already blocks uv. My transition eye glasses never darken.

We are older needed something easy to drive and park. We are redoing an existing build out on a 2020 HR 148 van. The must haves for us were a toilet and a bed, everything else is an extra. We do not want to fly or stay in motels. But we are sort of going surly Bills direction with camping and stopping some place for the wife to get clean. Just make it work for you.

Thank you. Do you use a second row of seating with your 148 and toilet and bed? Would the bed and toilet fit reasonably on a 148 with a second row of seating?

We have a 2019 Expedition XLT w/202A package and a 2021 T-250 Transit HR Cargo RX2. Expedition is way more comfortable in many ways. Quieter, heated & ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, & much better turning radius. Van has a great front picture window tho.

Thank you. Appreciate this coming from someone who has one of each!

Go rent a Transit at U-Haul for a few days & see what you think. For me, there's almost a complete lack of foot room in them, especially for the driver's left foot / passenger's right foot, making very long trips very uncomfortable for me. <- says the guy who can easily put in 15 hour days behind the wheel of his '15 Honda Accord, which has no such foot room problems.

I'd rent a passenger version as it would be quieter than a cargo version with no insulation.

I will you give this . I have a transit 250 med roof 148 and a f-350 utility so a pickup and a van . from the drivers seat I see this They are both comfy and drive great . In wind f-350 would be my choice . I have driven both cross country and I like them both . F-350 has a horrible turning radius . Neither of the two will fit in a drive thru or parking garage . I have never sat in any seat of these two other that the drivers . The transit does not have a passenger arm rest but it can be added . F-350 has v8 and big tank for gas Transit has v6 non ecco boost small tank . They both go the same distance on a tank of gas 350 miles. Granted im a contractor driving contractor vehicles but driving a transit for me is a joy . One thing an f-350 has expensive parts and the transit parts are a little cheaper . Also driven both daily in mountains on dirt roads and in snow . They each have strength and a weakness but have no problem jumping in them and rolling down the road .

If you want to be able to stand up when getting dressed in the morning or any other time get a van.

when we toured with Thrill Kill Cult a long time ago we had to supply our own transport (they had a tour bus). There was a budget, so we didn't have to pay, though. I rented two minivans, one for gear and one for talent. I believe I got a Town and Country for the gear, because the rear seats all folded into the floor, making it a cargo van. I got a Pacifica for the Talent. Everyone made fun of the "soccer mom minivans", but after riding for hours and hours every day in the Pacifica, even the cool kids were talking about "maybe buying one", and one did. Point I'm trying to make; a minivan with it's longer wheelbase and raised height can be engineered to be a very comfortable ride, and they get better mpg than a full size delivery van or a big SUV with it's insecurity-inspired "best in class" V8 power. And as a minivan, if it has the right kind of modular seats, it can actually be used as a tent every once in a while. Not as comfortable as a full size delivery van that you can stand up in, but better than a tent or mattress in the back of a pickup with a shell. I rented a newer Connect in Savannah, a passenger Titanium. It was great around town, and we took it to Jacksonville and back and got about 40mpg. I don't know how comfortable a base model cargo Connect would be in comparison, but probably not much different. I'm also not sure if there is room to make it a tin tent. Otherwise, I think THAT might be a good cross country vehicle if your camping is maybe once every 3-4 days. More if you're young and don't mind some inconvenience compared to a delivery truck.

Also get the "10 way" adjustable seat; for us they are very comfortable; also both driver and passenger seats are "heated"; both can recline "almost" flat; good for a short snooze. We did drive around Florida in Toyota Highlander (with a bucket toilet as toilet etc...); good in concept but not so good in practice; very hard for us to use it as we can't really stand up etc... So the decision to get high roof vehicle; but not so high that will trigger another issue - so a compromise to getting MR and Crew model. Now after having it for a few months; can't say that I have regrets in the options that we are getting etc... Also "Vanmade Gear" shades are excellent; the back ones are awesome for full privacy in using the toilets; I do get the "privacy glass"; under full sun, the windshield shade helps in minimizing heat coming thru the car. With 31 Gallon tank, I can get like 500+ miles range (driving in relaxing fashion; mostly < 65-70 mph). Lee

How about getting an Expedition during the long wait ordering a Transit? If the transit comes through, you'll have your comparison and a trade in. You don't have to take receipt of a vehicle you order if you change your mind. I have both an SUV and a Transit. I used to complain about the discomfort of the Transit 10 way seats and cramped foot well but my body has adjusted and I can now say it feels comfy. Have driven cross country several times in both SUV and Transit. Feels about the same to me. My Transit is low roof with a cargo carrier on top and does well in cross winds. Glad I have a backup (Toyota) vehicle while owning a Transit. Have experienced some differential and camera problems at 35,000 miles myself.

Hopefully this is pretty obvious, but I'd like to share one additional update to my comments about Ford Transit campervan > Subaru Ascent SUV: if a lot of your driving is higher speed winding roads/highways, then something like the Ascent is more fun/enjoyable to drive. In these cases, it comes down to simple physics, and I'd prefer to have half the weight for better control, braking, etc. In your use case, the Expedition Max and Transit (without the added weight of a full campervan buildout) are probably closer in weight, but it's still something for you to check/consider!

I drove an Expedition for work doing site visits all up and down the west coast, and it is by far my favorite long-distance driving vehicle of all time. Just absolute comfort and stability. Also, you can put a Colorado Camper Van pop-top on one. I’ve seen it on their website. We have a 350HD wagon now. It’s a good driver, and a great camper, but our build is so light that it has too much spring. The best it ever rode was hauling a whole house worth of LVP. No comparison to the Expedition for ride quality.

Order a lighter spring set from Ford that works with your weight and adjust your tire pressures. I'd try tire pressures first as it is easy. Check tire pressure change at speed while experimenting. You don't want more than a 10 percent change after warmed up. I run bigger tires so I run less PSI anyway but it makes a big difference in ride running full versus 5-10 psi less when cold.
