Table of Contents

Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls

One of my favorite day trips from Zurich is without a doubt a visit to Rhine Falls . I am a little obsessed with rivers and waterfalls, and since Rhine Falls is the largest waterfall in Europe (by volume, not height), it comes at the top of the list.

Sitting north of Zurich and right on the border with Germany, the Rhine Falls is formed by the Rhine River. Rhine Falls is 150 meters across and 23 meters high and it pumps out some 600,000 liters of water a second in the summer.

Experiencing the sheer power of the Rhine Falls is an incredible experience and you can view it from platforms on either side or go on a boat trip that takes you right up to the falls.

Getting to Rhine Falls is incredibly easy as it is a direct train ride from Zurich HB to Neuhausen Rheinfall, and then a short walk from the station. You will be at Rhine Falls in under an hour.

Mount Titlis

Mount Tiltis

Mount Titlis is one of the most beautiful mountains in Switzerland and another of the great day trips from Zurich.

Whether you simply want to enjoy the breathtaking views from the top or be active by skiing in the winter or hiking/mountain biking in the summer, Mt Titlis is the place for you.

The peak sits at 3000 meters above sea level and to get to the top, you will experience great views from the TITLIS Rotair cable car which rotates as it takes you directly to the peak.

Once at the top, take in the views from the viewing platform in every direction, go on the Titlis Cliff Walk, and visit the 5000-year-old Glacier cave.

There are a plethora of hiking trails that bring you back down the mountain or you can stop for lunch at the mountain-top restaurant and take the cable car back down.

Getting to Mount Titlis from Zurich is easy. It takes just over 2 hours to get to the heart of central Switzerland. You will need to change trains in Luzern and get off at Engelberg before getting on the cable car.

Winterthur

One of the easiest day trips from Zurich is a trip to Winterthur , Switzerland’s sixth largest city just 30 minutes north of Zurich.

Winterthur’s appeal is culture. It is packed to the brim with stunning architectural styles, museums, and art galleries, and the Old Town is an absolute delight to stroll around.

Winterthur’s Old Town is actually the biggest pedestrianized old town in Switzerland and it is filled with great bars, cafes, and restaurants. Once you have found it, it is hard to leave, so perhaps taking in the other sites first is the best idea.

The Fotomuseum is one of the best photography museums in Europe, the Oskar Reinhart Collection museum is full of incredible pieces by artists such as Rembrandt. Plus, there is even the Swiss Science Centre Technorama which is awesome for kids.

There are trains to Winterthur every hour from Zurich HB and they take less than 30 minutes.

Grindelwald

A visit to the charming alpine town of Grindelwald is another of the great day trips from Zurich, especially if you want to experience the mighty Alps.

Sitting just below the Bernese Alps, Grindelwald is a hub for awesome mountain activities in both summer and winter. In the winter, it is all about skiing, snowboarding, and most other winter sports.

mountain day trips interlaken

One of my favorite towns in Switzerland and one of the top day trips from Zurich is Interlaken.

Surrounded by the alps with the bright blue Lake Thun on one side, the deep blue Lake Brienz on the other, and with the Aare running through it, you couldn’t ask for a more quintessential Swiss Alpine town.

Known as the adventure capital of the region, you can enjoy all kinds of activities from paragliding to white water rafting and canyoning. There are also some incredible hiking routes that take you up mountains, past waterfalls, and offer awesome views too.

The town itself is lovely to stroll around. The Swiss architecture is a delight, the shopping is awesome, and you can hang out on the lake beaches in the summer, swim, go on cruises, and lots more!

You can be in Interlaken via a direct train from Zurich in just under 2 hours.

Fribourg at the Saane River

The city of Fribourg lies to the west of Bern and it is one of the more cultural day trip destinations within easy reach of Zurich.

Known as one of the best preserved medieval towns in the country, strolling around the medieval old town is a must, as you take in the stunning medieval architecture and views across the Sarine River .

One of the highlights is the city’s impressive gothic cathedral with its stunning bell tower and art nouveau stained glass windows. The city is also full of art museums that showcase modern and contemporary art.

Once you are done sightseeing, a stroll around the narrow pedestrian streets will have you finding lots of riverside cafes, wonderful shops, restaurants, and more.

Getting to Fribourg takes just 1.5 hours via train from Zurich, changing at Bern on your way.

Stein am Rhein

Stein am Rhein

Stein am Rhein is probably the best example of medieval Switzerland you can find in the country. Sitting downstream from Lake Constance on the Rhine River, it was once a fishing village but blossomed with art and architecture between the 12th and 15th centuries.

If you love a bit of culture then this is the perfect day trip from Zurich for you.

Stein am Rhein is one of the best-preserved medieval villages in all of Europe. The old houses lining the river banks and old town are stunning with their half-timbered design and painted facades.

Taking a look at the town hall (Rathaus) and square (Rathausplatz) is a must. The town hall is probably the most beautiful building in Stein am Rhein and the square is decorated with paintings that depict the history of the town.

St George’s Abbey, once a benedictine monastery and today a museum on the banks of the Rhine is also a must-see, as is the medieval castle Hohenklingen that sits on a hill about the town.

To get to Stein am Rhein from Zurich take the train to Schaffhausen and change to Stein am Rhein. It takes less than one hour.

bern old town and the aare river

If cities are your thing, a lovely day trip from Zurich is a visit to the Swiss capital, Bern. It is a wonderful city that is packed full of history and sitting on the banks of the Aare river, it is beautiful too!

The Old Town of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and this is a great place to start your day trip. The cobbled streets, old architecture, many fountains, shops, cafes, and restaurants make the Old Town a delight to stroll around.

best hikes appenzell

Appenzell is one of the lesser thought of day trips from Zurich but it is a great one nonetheless.

Appenzell is a quintessential Swiss village in Eastern Switzerland that sits below the stunning Alpstein mountains. Imagine Swiss homes in rolling hills and pastures, with mountain views and you get the idea.

The center of town is car-free and home to beautiful houses with decorated facades. A visit to the Museum of Appenzell will teach you all about the culture, and sampling some traditional food is a must too.

There are lots of great hiking trails around the area and you can take the cable car up to Ebenalp to see awesome views as well as a 17th-century chapel cut into the cliffs.

The trip to Appenzell from Zurich HB takes 1.75 hours on the train. Change at Gossau SG and get off at Urnäsch.

Rapperswil-Jona

Rapperswil castle from Lake Zurich

Sitting just down Lake Zurich from the city of Zurich is the town of roses, Rapperswil-Jona . Chances are you will have spent some time on Lake Zurich already while visiting the city, but Lake Zurich is huge and there is a lot more to explore than the shores around Zurich.

Rapperswil-Jona lies close to the other end of Lake Zurich and it is filled with roses. All the houses in the center of the town have window boxes with roses and there are numerous rose gardens to visit around the city.

You can also visit the lovely Rapperswil Castle which sits above the town. Home to stunning views over Lake Zurich, a deer park, and rose gardens it is a lovely place to hang out.

A stroll along the shores of Lake Zurich is also delightful and in the summer, a swim and some bathing on the beaches are also a must.

You can get to Rapperswil-Jona in 40 mins by train from Zurich or you can get a boat across Lake Zurich.

Gruyeres

Gruyeres , as you have probably guessed from the name, is known for Gruyere cheese but it is also the home of the oldest chocolate factory in Switzerland too. If cheese and chocolate are your things, a day trip to Gruyeres is a must.

Sitting in western Switzerland, the charming village of Gruyeres is home to a cheese factory, chocolate factory, museums, and a beautiful castle as well as great traditional restaurants.

Enjoy a tour and tasting experience at La Maison du Gruyère (cheese) and La Maison Cailler (chocolate). Then visit the beautiful 13th-century Gruyeres Castle and take in some art at the HR Giger Museum .

It is hard to believe such a small Alpine town could be home to so much, but that is why it is one of the top-day trips from Zurich.

Getting to Gruyeres takes 2.5 hours changing at Bern and Bulle.

basel old town

One of the top cultural day trips from Zurich is to the city of Basel which lies to the west of Zurich on both the French, German, and Swiss borders.

Basel is a beautiful multicultural city of note and well worth a visit. Sitting on the Rhine River, its Old Town is lovely to stroll around and something not to miss is the town hall which stands out since it is made from red sandstone.

The gothic cathedral is also a wonderful sight to see and so is the Gate of Spalen , an ancient gate of the city.

Basel is also home to some great museums including the Natural History Museum and the fine arts museum of the Beyeler Foundation.

Basel is less than an hour away from Zurich via a direct train making it very easy on a day trip.

Jesuit Church

Lucerne is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. Sitting on Lake Lucerne where the Reuss River flows out of it, Lucerne is as beautiful as it is full of culture.

Home to one of the best preserved Old Towns in Switzerland along with the beautiful Chapel Bridge, with views across Lake Lucerne and into the Alps, it is a hard day trip to beat.

Crossing Chapel Bridge, the oldest covered wooden bridge of its kind in Europe is a must. It is covered with window boxes full of flowers and the ceiling features a series of paintings depicting the town’s history.

Other great things to do include visiting the Swiss Museum of Transport, the Sammlung Rosengart art museum which has a lot of pieces by Picasso, the Lion Monument, and lots more.

There is a direct train to Lucerne that takes less than an hour from Zurich.

Liechtenstein

Vaduz Castle

It is not often that a day trip includes going to a different country but you can be in the capital of Liechtenstein, Vaduz, in less than 1.5 hours from Zurich.

Liechtenstein is packed full of mountains and is a wonderful place if you want to enjoy the outdoors. Hiking is great in the summer and it is all about skiing in the winter.

Vaduz is home to some great architecture and interesting artwork. Be sure to check out the Vaduz Cathedral and the Vaduz Castle.

Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

Saving one of the best until last, a day trip to Jungfraujoch is a pretty incredible experience.

Jungfraujoch is accessed from Grindelwald and is a saddle that connects the stunning peaks of Monch and Jungfrau. Riding the cable cars and cogwheel train to the top is an experience in itself with magic views.

At the top, you can see the Aletsch Glacier , dine at a mountain-top restaurant, ski all year round, hike, and see some of the most amazing views that feature the three main peaks of the religion, Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau.

Getting there takes a while from Zurich. The 3.75-hour journey includes a train to Interlaken, then to Grindelwald, and then cable cars.

Stacked with museums, galleries, and Switzerland ’s best gourmet scene , Zürich  is a pleasure to visit.

Excellent public transport also makes the city a fantastic base for exploring the region, with day trip options including visits to charming old towns, soaks in thermal baths and a cruise to an island on Lake Zürich. Here are our favorite excursions.

1. Explore the old town of Lucerne

Travel time: 1 hour

Is  Lucerne Switzerland’s prettiest city? You be the judge after swooning at its cobalt lake and well-preserved medieval Altstadt (old town) with candy-colored houses and waterfront promenades. Don’t miss the creaky 14th-century  Kapellbrücke , a covered bridge that zig zags across the Reuss River. Contemplate the  Lion Monument , a 10m-long sculpture of a dying lion that Mark Twain called the “saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world”. Get a bird’s-eye view of it all by wandering along the top of the  old city walls .

How to get to Lucerne from Zürich: Frequent trains depart from Zürich’s main station.

Under Swiss flags, pedestrians walk down busy Marktgasse toward the city center of Winterthur, Switzerland

2. Wander around Winterthur’s atmospheric old town

Travel time: 25 minutes

Winterthur is home to the truly stupendous art collections amassed by Oskar Reinhart , including works by German Romantic painter Caspar David Friedrich. Here, you’ll also find one of Europe’s foremost  photography museums , and the fantastic, hands-on Technorama devoted to science. The medieval turreted castle  Schloss Kyburg tops a crag just south of Winterthur, while the pedestrian-only old town is lined with pastel-painted, terracotta-tiled boutiques, cafes and bars such as  La Cyma .

How to get to Winterthur from Zürich: Frequent trains depart from Zürich’s main station.

3. Catch sunset atop Uetliberg, Zürich’s local peak

Travel time: 30 minutes

Uetliberg is the mountain on Zürich’s doorstep, ablaze with wildflowers in spring and daubed with russets and golds in fall. Head up this 869m (2850ft) peak to hike, jog or mountain bike on the trails that criss-cross the woods, such as the  Planetenweg , a 6km (3.7 mile) route across the mountain ridge that’s marked by 1:1 billion scale models of the planets. At the summit is Uetliberg Aussichtsturm , a steel lattice observation tower with fine views over the city, Lake Zürich and, in the far distance, the Alps. Sunset is prime-time viewing and a chance to enjoy a drink or meal at the  Hotel Uto Kulm .

How to get to Uetliberg from Zürich: Train S10 runs to Uetliberg. From the terminus it's a 10-minute uphill walk to the viewpoint.

4. Feel the power of the Rheinfall, Europe’s largest waterfall

Travel time: 55 minutes

Formed by tectonic shifts during the last ice age 15,000 years ago, the Rheinfall is a real crash-bang spectacle. The river cascades 23m (75ft) across a width of 150m (492ft) creating billowing plumes of spray and raging white water in the basin below. In summer, ferries head to the tall rock in the middle of the falls, which you can climb and watch the water rush all around you. Otherwise, follow the trail that wends down from medieval Schloss Laufen to the Känzeli viewing platform. A visit to the falls can easily be combined with exploring the quaint medieval town of Schaffhausen, which is 4km (2.5 miles) away.

How to get to Rheinfall from Zürich: Take the S9 train to Neuhausen Rheinfall station.

5. Cycle around the tiny principality of Liechtenstein

Travel time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Only 25km (15.5 miles) long by 12km (7.5 miles) wide at its broadest point,  Liechtenstein is the stuff of pure fairy tales: a mountain principality crowned by turreted castles such as that in Vaduz , its capital. From the tourist office here hire an e-bike to follow the 59km (37 mile)  Drei Länder Tour (Three Countries Tour), which leads to the medieval town of Feldkirch in Austria. The route then heads on to Illspitz and down along the Rhine to Buchs in Switzerland – dominated by its 13th-century castle,  Schloss Werdenberg – before heading back to Vaduz.

How to get to Liechtenstein from Zürich: Take the train to the border town of Sargans. From there, frequent buses head to Vaduz.

6. Sail to an island from lakeside Rapperswil

Travel time: 40 minutes

Known as the "city of roses" thanks to its profusion of the fragrant blooms, Rapperswil is a cultured little town on the eastern shore of Lake Zürich. Dominating the skyline is the late-12th-century castle  Schloss Rapperswil . On the slopes beneath is one of the oldest vineyards on Lake Zürich and a herd of fallow deer. The town’s  Kunst(zeug)haus is a forward-thinking art gallery, and  Stadtmuseum Rapperswil-Jona  is a history museum with a striking facade that combines modernist perforated bronze with a 14th-century stone tower. Stroll along the lakeside promenade then take a short ferry ride to the island of  Ufenau , a nature reserve with medieval churches and a restaurant serving fresh battered fish, a local speciality.

How to get to Rapperswil from Zürich: The S5, S7 or S15 trains are the fastest way here. A cruise across Lake Zürich from Bürkliplatz takes two hours.

7. Relax in one of Baden’s mineral rich spas

Travel time: 15 minutes

The Romans were the first to harness the wellness powers of the 18 sulphur springs that bubble up around Baden. Roughly 800,000 liters (176,000 gallons) a day of Switzerland's most mineral-rich thermal water is pushed at temperatures of as much as 68°C (154°F). Most of Baden's springs have been channeled into spa hotels and complexes such as  FORTYSEVEN and the Roman Bath at  Hotel Blume . Along the Limmat River are a couple of small, open-air  municipal baths that you can freely take a dip in. Baden’s Old Town is adorned by a fetching covered timber bridge (the Holzbrücke), cobbled lanes and an assortment of step-gabled houses. Also check out the  Stiftung Langmatt , a gorgeous mansion housing a cornucopia of French impressionist art and surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens.

How to get to Baden from Zürich: Take trains IR16 or IR36 from Zürich's main station.

Lucerne

Spread along the banks of the River Reuss as it flows out of Lake Lucerne, Lucerne was an important medieval trading town and retains many of its old features in its compact center. Most tourists head first to Lucerne's most popular landmark, the Kapellbrücke , a covered wooden bridge built in 1333.

Inside are more than 100 pictures of saints and scenes from the town's history. The octagonal Wasserturm beside it is a 13th-century water tower from the town's fortifications. Paintings inside the second covered wooden bridge, the 1406 Spreuerbrücke , depict the Dance of Death.

Take time to explore the Altstadt, the old town on the right bank of the Reuss, to admire the brightly painted old burghers' houses, timber-framed buildings, and little squares with fountains. Look especially for the Kornmarkt with the Altes Rathaus , built in 1602-06, and the adjoining 14th-century tower.

The picturesque Weinmarkt has an elaborate Gothic fountain. Rheinfall (Rhine Falls)

After emerging from the west end of Lake Constance, the Rhine River flows through a beautiful green valley, then plunges over the Rhine Falls before flowing on toward Basel. The mightiest falls in Central Europe surge over a ledge of Jurassic limestone 150 meters across and up to 21 meters high, with two higher rocks standing in the middle of the river. The flow of water is at its greatest in June and July, after the mountain snows melt.

The falls are easily visible from both sides, and you can see them from below on a 30-minute boat tour through the churning waters. Another fine vantage point, especially at night when the falls are floodlit, is from the Schlössli Wörth , set on a tiny island that from the 13th to the 19th centuries was an important shipping and reloading area for goods on the trading route from Lake Constance to Basel. Today, it is a fine-dining restaurant and café with a terrace overlooking the falls.

The half-day Rhine Falls Tour from Zurich takes you there, on a climate-controlled coach ride past castles and through the beautiful town of Schaffhausen. This is a good tour if your flight arrives in Zurich before your hotel is ready, or even if you are just passing through the city, as there is the option of an airport pickup and drop-off.

Rhine Falls - Layout map

East of Zurich is a beautiful land of lakes and green valleys that quickly soar to Alpine peaks. Known to children everywhere as the homeland of Heidi, the region is dotted with charming mountain villages in magnificent Alpine settings. One of these, Maienfeld , is the setting for the children's classic Heidi , and one of its rustic homes has been furnished as described in the book. Heidi House is open to visitors in the summer and is a favorite photo-op all year.

Between this "Heidiland" and the Austrian Alps is the tiny principality of Liechtenstein , with its hilltop Royal Castle and famous postage stamps. Its capital, Vaduz, is the smallest in Europe, a picturesque town on the banks of the Rhine River. Liechtenstein has five castles, two of which - the royal residence of Schloss Vaduz and Burg Gutenberg in the village of Balzers - are intact, and the other three are romantic ruins.

You can tour this region with the Heidiland and Liechtenstein Tour from Zurich: Two Countries in One Day , with a guide who can point out landmarks and fill in the history and culture as you travel by coach through the stunning scenery. The trip begins with a city tour of Zurich before traveling along the shores of Lake Zurich to Rapperswil, with its medieval castle.

A stop in the village of Maienfeld allows plenty of time to visit the Heidi House if it's open, and there is time to explore Liechtenstein's capital of Vaduz.

Bern

The capital of Switzerland is only 125 kilometers southwest of Zurich and easy to reach by direct train. Bern's Old Town has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its streets of 17th- and 18th-century houses and shops, characterized by steep roofs and street-front arcades.

The Old Town of Bern is even more picturesque because of its dramatic setting atop a high ridge that is almost completely encircled by the River Aare. The Old Town is where you'll find many of the main attractions, which include its famous clock tower with moving figures and the splendid Munster. But Bern's main draw for tourists is the old city itself, with its charming, stone-paved streets and lanes, its beautiful fountains, steep roofs, and towers.

You can combine a tour of Bern with visits to sample two of Switzerland's most famous products, Emmental cheese and Kambly Swiss biscuits, on a 10.5-hour Bern Day Trip from Zurich . With a guide to point out landmarks as you drive through the Entlebuch Valley and Upper Emmental Valley and bring them to life with a little history, you'll tour Bern's old Town and stop between Bern and Zurich to watch demonstrations of biscuit and cheese-making, with samples of each to taste.

Stein am Rhein

Arriving in Stein am Rhein, about an hour from Zürich by train, you feel as though you've been dropped abruptly into medieval Switzerland. Except that the timbered buildings that line its main street are in far better condition than they probably were in the Middle Ages. Colorful frescoes, also beautifully maintained, decorate the buildings around Rathausplatz , the cozy main square. Flowers hang from window boxes, making every angle photo-worthy.

One of the most charming towns in Europe , Stein am Rhein began as a Roman fortress beside the Rhine, built in the third century to secure the river. Learn more about the town's long history at the museum inside Hohenklingen Castle , built above the town in 1225.

Views from the castle encompass the compact town and the river valley. Visit the well-preserved Medieval Monastery of St. Georgen , browse among the works of local artisans in the excellent gallery, or just linger in a Rathausplatz café to savor Stein am Rhein's Medieval atmosphere .

Schaffhausen

The old town of Schaffhausen, about 50 kilometers from Zürich, is a postcard-perfect scene of colorfully painted timber-frame houses with oriel windows and coats of arms on the facades. On Fronwagplatz are the Fronwag tower and two fountains from the 1500s, while the single-towered Münster , built from 1087 to 1150, was originally the church of a Benedictine abbey. Be sure to see the delicate 12th-century arcades in the cloister.

The handsome convent buildings now house All Saints Museum , one of the richest local museums in Switzerland, with collections of prehistoric material, religious art, period rooms, traditional costumes, and works by modern Swiss artists. Its two chapels from the 11th century and a Romanesque loggia are good places to visit as well.

Overlooking the old town and river from a vine-clad hill is 16th-century Kastell Munot , a circular castle fortified with walls more than five meters thick. Not only is the well-preserved castle interesting, it provides fine views of the town and the Rhine valley.

Hegi Castle in the town Winterthur, Switzerland

Winterthur, about 26 kilometers from Zürich, can thank the thriving craft industry of its past for today's art and cultural largesse. The little triangular Old Town still preserves streets with rows of old burghers' houses - look especially for the Waaghaus in Moorish-Gothic style, Zur Geduld with an Early Baroque façade, the elegantly Rococo Hans zum Adler at the Obertor, and the graffiti on the Hans zum Hinteren Waldhorn.

For its size, Winterthur is well endowed with museums: applied and decorative art in the industrial museum, a natural history museum, a clock collection, and three separate art museums. One of these, the Oskar Reinhart Collection includes works by Rubens, Rembrandt, El Greco, Goya, Renoir, and Cézanne.

At the excellent Technorama of Switzerland , you can learn about science and technology in compelling exhibits filled with hands-on activities that make it a favorite place to go for families.

Winterthur Map - Tourist Attractions

The trip up Mt. Pilatus gives you a taste of the various feats of Swiss engineering as well as a chance to sample both the cable cars and the mountain cog railways that make so many mountain towns and mountaintop views accessible.

The trip from Zürich passes through Lucerne before arriving at Kriens, where you board a panoramic gondola then an aerial cable car to just below the 2,132-meter summit of Mount Pilatus. From the terrace are panoramic views of central Switzerland and the Alps. Short trails lead to the various peaks of this rugged limestone massif, for even broader views.

For a full sampling of Swiss mountain transport, make your return trip down Mount Pilatus by cogwheel railway, traveling at a gradient of 48 percent, one of the world's steepest for a railway. The cog railway brings you to Alpnachstad, from where you can return to Lucerne by boat on a scenic cruise across Lake Lucerne before returning to Zürich.

You can book this entire trip in one package by taking the Mount Pilatus Summer Day Trip from Zurich . This 9.5-hour tour travels by air-conditioned coach to Lucerne, where there is time to explore the old town's attractions before beginning the circular route on Mt Pilatus by gondola, aerial cable car, and cogwheel railway. At the top of the mountain, the tour includes a moderate hike and ends with a cruise on the lake before returning to Zurich.

Abbey of St. Gall in St. Gallen

Just over an hour by train from Zurich, the lovely town of St. Gallen holds a treasury of Baroque buildings, making its streets a delight to stroll. Foremost of these is the magnificent Abbey of St. Gall , a former monastery founded in the early 700s, and for many centuries one of the most influential Benedictine abbeys in Europe and an important center of culture and learning.

The highlight of the abbey is the library, a magnificent hall under a Baroque ceiling with frescoed medallions framed in elaborate gold-washed scrolls and flourishes. The ranks of shelves and the exquisite curving gallery are finely detailed and embellished in inlaid woods. It is one of the world's oldest monastic libraries.

The former abbey church, itself a masterpiece of Baroque architecture and decoration, is now the Cathedral of St. Gallen. The abbey complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take time to visit the Textile Museum , with beautifully presented exhibits of textile arts that range from ancient Egyptian lace to modern textiles. St. Gallen was a center for textiles, and the linen woven here was known as "white gold' for its finesse.

Baden

On the shores of the Limmat, the same river that flows through the center of Zurich, Baden was known for its thermal springs as far back as Roman times. The therapeutic waters of its hot springs have the highest mineral concentration of any of Switzerland's many spas.

While many of the spas and hotels offer luxury wellness programs, there are plenty of places for the public to bathe in the pools fed by the hot springs. Some of these are free, such as the Thermalbank, an eight-meter-long bench where you can soak your feet in the hot waters.

Opening in 2021, the city's stunning new bathing center was designed by Ticino Architect Mario Botta, and includes cafés and gathering spaces along with bathing pools.

More attractions bring tourists to Baden, including its charming medieval center of towers and half-timbered houses, and a world-class art museum. The Langmatt Foundation is one of Switzerland's finest collections of art from the Impressionist period. Baden is a 20-minute train ride from Zurich's central station.

Glarus

South of the Walensee and an easy drive or train ride from Zürich, the little canton of Glarus occupies one of the most beautiful valleys in the Alps. Rising above it on the west is the 2,332-meter ridge of Glärisch, and the massive bulk of Tödi, at 3,614 meters, closes its southern end.

From Linthal, a cableway connects to the traffic-free resort of Braunwald , an ideal jumping-off point for walking and climbing. Although the Freulerpalast in Näfels has a magnificent Renaissance doorway and Early Baroque interior that houses the Cantonal Museum, the main attractions for tourists are not architecture or museums but the scenic splendor of Glarus and its opportunities for outdoor adventures.

You can drive, take a post bus, or walk from Netstal to cross the Schwammhöhe into the high Klöntal , one of the most beautiful and romantic of Alpine valleys, with the Klöntalersee and a series of tumbling mountain streams.

Above the south side of the Klöntalersee rear the rock walls of Glärnisch , and below them is the canton capital of Glarus. The drive over the Klausen Pass to Altdorf is breathtakingly beautiful, and continues down the Schächen valley, where you'll find the 93-meter-high Staubi waterfalls .

Regensberg

About 18 kilometers northwest of Zürich, Regensberg is one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Switzerland. Among the carefully restored old burghers' houses is the half-timbered Rote Rose (Red Rose) house from 1540.

The five-story round tower (Rundturm), whose walls are three meters thick, is all that remains of the 12 th -century castle. The rest dates from the 16 th century, including the 57-meter-deep draw-well, the deepest in the country. Inside the tower is a small museum of the castle's and town's history.

7 Best Day Trips from Zurich

' src=

Switzerland’s largest city might be best known as a global financial center, but Zurich’s picturesque setting and cultural treasures have helped to establish the city as a vacation destination too. Striding the Limmat River, Zurich’s postcard-perfect backdrop is an expansive crystal-clear lake rimmed by snow-capped mountains.

Clean, organized and easy to explore, Zurich has a lot to offer visitors, and with its superior public transportation system, the city makes a great base for excursions into the surrounding region as well. From towering mountain peaks to storybook Swiss villages, here are some of the most rewarding day trips from Zurich.

7. Mount Rigi

Mount Rigi

Located in the Swiss Plateau mountain range and surrounded by three lakes, Mount Rigi has been a popular stop on the European grand tour since the 1800s. Offering some of the most beautiful views in all of Switzerland, the peak is rightly nicknamed the Queen of the Mountains. Traveling by cog railway, visitors can zip to the summit in less than 45 minutes from the villages of Vitznau and Arth-Goldau. Cable car transportation is available near the community of Weggis that takes visitors close to the summit as well. The views from each approach offer unique vistas of the lakes below.

Getting to Mount Rigi

  • By public transport from Zurich Main Station, it can take as little as an hour and a half to find yourself atop of Mount Rigi, gazing out at the breathtaking views before you. Trains run regularly to Arth-Goldau, and from here, you take a 40-minute cogwheel train to the top, where you’ll find lots of lovely hiking trails.
  • It is even quicker to drive there; from Zurich, it usually takes just under an hour, depending on whether you head to Vitznau, Krabel, Kussnacht, Goldau or Weggis – various gateways to the mountain where you’ll find parking and cable cars or cogwheel trains to the summit. From Zurich, Kussnacht is the nearest. All you need to do is head south out of the city on the A4, then continue on the E41 past the Zugersee to Kussnacht. Here, you follow a winding road up the mountainside to the Seebodenalp aerial cable car, which will take you the rest of the way up Mount Rigi. Alternatively, you can carry on the same road past Kussnacht and head to the aerial cable cars at either Weggis or Vitznau.
  • If you’re a bit pressed for time and want to see as much of Switzerland as possible in just one day, another option is to take a guided tour that not only takes you to the summit of Mount Rigi but also around the center of nearby Lucerne. With a delightful cruise on Lake Lucerne and a lovely cable car and cogwheel train ride up the mountain included, it is a great day out, and the scenery is absolutely stunning everywhere you go.

6. Rhine Falls

Rhine Falls

Easily reached by bus, rail or boat from Zurich, the Rheinfall is one of the largest and most famous waterfalls in Europe. It’s the broad width of the falls and the heavy spray of water that it generates that most attract visitors.

Boat Ride

Located between the communities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Laufen-Uhwiesen, the Rhine Falls can be experienced from several viewing platforms on both sides of the river. Boat rides offer adventurous spectators up-close views at the falls and the Rheinfallfelsen, a mammoth rock that splits the falls in the center. The Laufen Castle, which has been converted into a restaurant, also offers a charming vista of the falls.

Getting to Rhine Falls

  • Lying just to the north of Zurich, the spectacular Rhine Falls are easily reached by public transport from the city, and the journey usually takes around an hour. Just hop on a train at Zurich Main Station and alight at Neuhausen Rheinfall, from where you can simply walk to the falls or take a boat ride below them.
  • Driving yourself is another option; this means you can explore the surrounding countryside at your leisure, with Saint Gallen in Switzerland and Konstanz in Germany not too far away. Just head north out of Zurich on the A1. Once you come to the A4, turn onto it and follow it all the way to the Rhine Falls. All in all, it should take about 45 minutes to get there.
  • If you really want to make the most of your time in this wonderful part of the country, you may want to consider a guided tour. These not only take you to visit the falls but also to see the medieval Laufen Castle, the 16th-century Munot Fortress, and past the beautiful vineyards and quaint villages that characterize this part of Switzerland.

5. Mount Pilatus

Mount Pilatus

Comprised of several summits, Mount Pilatus is situated between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug and Lake Lauerz in central Switzerland. Thanks to several cogwheel railways, cable cars and gondolas, ascending to the mountain’s peak is an excursion that every visitor can undertake and enjoy.

Departing from the town of Alpnachstad, the world’s steepest cog rail offers the fastest and most direct route. A series of cable cars and gondolas operate out of the Lucerne suburb of Kriens. Hardy travelers can hike to the top in around four hours. A surprisingly flat trail at the summit is perfect for taking in the spectacular views.

Getting to Mount Pilatus

  • To get to Mount Pilatus from Zurich, you first want to take a 50-minute train ride to Lucerne, then hop on a bus to the nearby Kriens, which is the gateway to Mount Pilatus. It is then a short walk to the valley, where you’ll find a series of gondolas and cable cars to whisk you up to the summit as you enjoy incredible views of the mountains. Alternatively, you can take a 20-minute train journey from Lucerne to Alpnachstad, where you’ll find the world’s steepest cog railway to take you to the top of Mount Pilatus.
  • To drive to the towering mountain takes around 45 minutes. You’ll have to park at either Kriens or Alpnachstad and take a gondola or cog railway the rest of the way. Head south out of Zurich and pick up the A4 then A14 heading to Lucerne. This eventually turns into the A2 just outside of the city; you want to keep on it until exit 27 for Kriens, or exit 37 from the A8 for Alpnachstad.
  • A popular option amongst many people is to take a guided tour to the top of Mount Pilatus. With an expert guide accompanying you, you’ll hike along the beautiful Dragon’s Path, take a cruise on Lake Lucerne, and enjoy incredible views from both the summit of the mountain and the cable car that takes you to the top.

Lucerne

A short drive south of Zurich lands visitors in lovely Lucerne , a place that fits the idea of an idyllic Swiss town to perfection. With its cobblestone streets, 14-century city walls and medieval Old Town quarter, this lost-in-time destination never fails to enchant visitors.

Whether it’s a concert at the city’s performing arts center, Kongress Zentrum, or a folkloric show featuring yodeling, alphorns and cowbells, Lucerne knows how to keep its many visitors engaged and entertained. Surrounded by mountains, the city where William Tell is said to have shot the apple off his son’s head is also a favorite base for excursions to Mount Rigi and Mount Pilatus.

Getting to Luceren

  • As regular trains run between Zurich Main Station and Lucerne, it is straightforward to get from one to the other, and the journey only takes 50 minutes. Once you alight, you’ll find all the city’s amazing sights just a short walk away, as is the glistening lake.
  • A lovely way to visit Lucerne and enjoy the spectacular Alpine scenery that lies around it is to take a guided tour that includes a trip to the top of Mount Rigi. With a scenic paddle-boat ride on the lake and a delightful cable car ride up the mountain included as part of the package, the views on offer of the scenery are bewitchingly beautiful. In addition to this, free time in Lucerne’s lovely Old Town gives you the opportunity to explore the city at your leisure.

3. Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch is a col in the Bernese Alps accessible by railway, ending at Europe’s highest mountain station. Highlights include views of spectacular mountain summits like the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau, and views of the large Eiger Glacier that nestles below them.

Sphinx Observatory

The Sphinx observatory, one of the highest astronomical sighting stations in the world, is located here as well. Views are endless and pristine, though amenities are small with just a handful of restaurants. It’s a very long train ride from Zurich, taking about 4.5 hours, but the experience is unforgettable.

Train of Jungfraubahn

Getting to Jungfraujoch

  • While it does take around four to four and a half hours and a number of different trains to get to Jungfraujoch, the journey will pass by in no time at all, as you pass through the spectacular Swiss Alps. From Zurich, hop on a train to Bern, then take another one to Interlaken. Here, you need to take a Bernese Oberland railway to Lauterbrunnen, where you then board another train heading to Kleine Scheidegg. From here, the final stretch of the journey is on the Jungfrau railway to Jungfraujoch, where you can finally enjoy the incredible views.
  • If all those changes sound like a bit of a nightmare, you might want to opt for a guided tour, as a scenic bus journey cuts out the first stretch of the trip and takes you directly to Lauterbrunnen. From here, carry on by train; the views of the mountains are staggering, with the panoramas from the summit of Jungfraujoch the highlight of the tour. With a trip to the Sphinx Observatory included, it is a great, stress-free day out that avoids all the hassle of getting there by public transport.

2. Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein

The tiny country of Liechtenstein is a bucket-list destination for many travelers. Ruled by a constitutional monarchy, land-locked Liechtenstein is the sixth-smallest country in Europe, but it’s big on natural attractions.

Those on a day trip from Zurich are likely to be more impressed by the beauty of the surrounding countryside than by the capital city Vaduz, although the boldly designed contemporary art museum is well worth a visit. The royal family’s castle in Vaduz is off limits to visitors most of the year, but the pretty hilltop Gutenberg Castle in the village of Balzers is open for exploration.

Getting to Liechtenstein

  • To get to Liechtenstein’s capital of Vaduz by public transport is relatively simple, and generally takes around an hour and 40 minutes. Just hop on a train from Zurich Main Station and alight at Sargans, which lies on the border with Liechtenstein. From here, take the number eleven bus to Vaduz – or indeed, any other little town that takes your fancy, as the bus runs the whole length of the country.
  • While it is easy enough to get to Liechtenstein by public transport, you are probably better off driving there, as this enables you to explore the fantastic scenery and charming little villages at your leisure. From Zurich, head southeast on the A3; this will take you almost all the way there, as you only turn off at exit 9 when you see signs pointing you to Vaduz and Liechtenstein. The journey takes just over an hour. On the way, you pass gorgeous lakes and towering mountains.
  • Another option for visiting Liechtenstein is to join a guided tour, that not only takes you to the Principality’s charming capital, but also Heidiland in Switzerland. With a knowledgeable guide on hand, you’ll learn all there is to know about Vaduz. The nature and scenery at Heidiland is astounding. As this tour also includes a sightseeing trip around Zurich, it offers the perfect combination of history, culture, and nature, with something for everyone to enjoy.

1. Mount Titlis

Mount Titlis

A one-and-a-half hour drive south from Zurich brings sightseers to the small resort town of Engelberg, the ideal departure point for any visitor who wants to enjoy views of central Switzerland from the highest vantage point. Standing 10,623 feet (3,238 meters) above sea level, the summit is always covered in snow.

Titlis cliff walk

It takes a series of rides on three cable cars and a funicular to reach the top where passengers are rewarded with unparalleled views. There’s also a four-story complex at the summit that includes restaurants, shops and an ice-grotto bar. A glacier trail at the peak leads visitors into an illuminated ice cave.

Engelberg

Getting to Mount Titlis

  • While it does take a couple of hours to reach Engelberg – the starting point of your ascent to the top of Mount Titlis – from Zurich, the scenery from the train window is so stunning that the journey will fly by in no time. From Zurich Main Station, you first need to take a train to Lucerne, where you then change platforms and take another train to Engelberg. From here, your ascent really begins. You then need to take a series of cable cars up the mountain to the top of Mount Titlis. All in all, the whole journey from Zurich to the summit should take two and a half to three hours.
  • Driving to Mount Titlis is another option, although be prepared to drive along some very narrow winding mountain roads. From Zurich, head south out of the city center and pick up the A4, which will take you to Lucerne. Here, continue on the A2 until just before Oberdorf, when you should take exit 33 and turn off onto the scenic mountain road that will take you to Engelberg. After having enjoyed the hour and 20-minute beautiful drive, park up and hop on a cable car to the summit.
  • If small mountain roads aren’t your thing, you may find it simpler to take a guided tour to Mount Titlis. As well as taking you up the mountain to bask in the stupendous views, the tour also takes you skiing, for a walk over Europe’s highest suspension bridge, and to Lucerne, where you get to explore the city’s fantastic Old Town.

Switzerland is famous for its stunning mountains and lakes, and I think Zurich is the perfect base from which to explore them.

Here are six of my favourite day trips from Zurich for those looking to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps.

Lucerne & Mount Pilatus

Best for: Railway lovers

Travel times:

  • By train: 41 minutes
  • By car: 1 hour

Top three things to do:

  • Take a trip up Mount Pilatus
  • Relax on a yacht cruise on Lake Lucerne
  • Visit the Swiss Museum of Transport

Lucerne

Lucerne is a picturesque city located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, surrounded by the towering Swiss mountains.

Here, I’d recommend taking a boat ride on the lake, exploring the historic old town, and visiting the famous Chapel Bridge. But for me, the highlight of any day in Lucerne is a journey up Mount Pilatus.

You’ll ascend on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to the top of the mountain, where you can enjoy breathtaking and unparalleled views of the surrounding Alps.

Insider travel tip: During the winter season – November to February – Lucerne is a hub for snow sports. Everyone is hitting the slopes, so museums and other indoor attractions are quite quiet.

Best for: Adrenaline junkies

  • By train: 1 hour 54 minutes
  • By car: 1 hour 50 minutes
  • Ascend to the Harder Kulm Viewpoint
  • Get your adrenaline pumping with a tandem paraglide
  • Take a trip to Giessbach Falls

See the Swiss Alps in all their glory and marvel at the natural beauty on show. Discover more of the best things to do in Interlaken in my guide.

8 Amazing Day Trips from Zurich

Zurich is undoubtedly one of the most visited cities in all of Switzerland. This upmarket financial capital is home to many of Switzerland’s most luxurious. That’s saying something for a country known to be relatively more expensive than anywhere else. Don’t let Zurich intimidate you, however.

Despite its high-end reputation, there are lots to do for any kind of traveler. From amazing restaurants and crazy nightlife to quirky hotels and fun activities , it’s no question that travelers continue to flock to this city. But if all else fails, it’s also the perfect jump-off point for amazing day trips.

The Best Day Trips from Zurich

One of the closest and most popular day trips from Zurich for locals is to the lakeside town of Rapperswil. It is a quaint historic town, complete with its own castle, perched right on the shores of Lake Zurich.

Not only is it a great spot to do a boat ride from downtown Zurich, you can also get up close(r) to the Alps there. The far end of Lake Zurich, where Rapperswil is located, gives you complete other perspectives on the Alps.

It is also a great spot for lunch, going for a stroll, or just sunning yourself on the shores of the lake. There are other options as well, such as swimming and stand-up paddling in summer. Or heading out on the lake to one of the nearby islands for a quick jaunt.

Getting There

By Boat: The best and most scenic way to get to Rapperswil is by ferry boat from the downtown end of Lake Zurich.

By Car: It is possible to go by car, although parking is somewhat limited, like in most of Switzerland. And unless you do it on a weekday, it is super busy.

Jungfraujoch

Photo by kevinpoh on Trend Hype / CC BY

The most popular day trip from Zurich, or from anywhere in Switzerland for that matter, is the Jungfraujoch . At an impressive height of 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), it’s the highest train station in Europe, earning it the nickname “Top of Europe”.

There are many activities to do here, but the biggest draw is its location in the heart of the Bernese Oberland. From here, guests can take in impressive panoramic sights of the three famous peaks of the Jungfrau massif: the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger.

With snow-capped peaks throughout the year, skiing and snowboarding are the top adventures here. There are also several exhibits to explore, including the Ice Palace where artists carve sculptures into the walls made of ice. There are several restaurants and shops to visit as well, but take your time at the viewing decks.

The Sphinx Observatory is an international research station that is most ideal for you to get your bearings. From here, you can see stunning rock formations and panoramic views of the Bernese Oberland. On a cloudy day, you can also head to the Jungfrau Panorama where 360-degree views on the mountain are projected on the walls.

There are so many things to do in the Jungfrau region in winter , or summer, you are spoiled for choice!

By Train: Unsurprisingly, the journey to Jungfraujoch is beautiful. The coach ride from Zurich to Interlaken moves along the Brünig Pass and the shores of Lake Brienz. From Interlaken, you can go through Lauterbrunnen via train or through a cogwheel ride in Grindelwald to Klein Scheiddeg , which is also a great pitstop for amazing views.

Once done exploring, you can ride the Jungfrau Railway to Jungfraujoch. The whole journey takes over 4 hours.

By Car: The drive from Zurich to Interlaken will take a little less than 2 hours. Once in Interlaken, take the train ride to Jungfraujoch.

By Organized tour: By far the most convenient option, there are several operators that arrange for day trips to Jungfraujoch. Check the offers from Viator and GetYourGuide .

If you want to visit the Bernese Oberland but not all the way to Jungfraujoch, then prepare for an adrenaline-filled trip to Interlaken. Known as the adventure capital of Switzerland, Interlaken is perfectly situated between Lakes Brienz and Thun, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Alps. The town may be small in size but very big on experience.

A day trip from Zurich to Interlaken is a day for outdoorsy adventures. The most popular of which is paragliding – jumping off a cliff and gliding with the wind. From Interlaken, it’s also easy to reach some of Switzerland’s most beautiful waterfalls , like Trummelbach Falls and Reichenbach Falls. There are many ways to enjoy the great outdoors without breaking much of a sweat, too

You can take a cable ride to Harder Klum for panoramic views of the valley, or take an easy trek through the Interlaken-Harder Alpine Game Park. If you’re more of an easygoing kind of traveler, you can always wander around Unterseen, Interlaken’s Old Town.

By train: There are two trains that leave from Zurich Main Station to Interlaken with a train change in Bern via the SBB. The journey is an hour and 50 minutes.

By car: There are 123 kilometers to cover between Zurich and Interlaken, which will take an hour and 30 minutes. You can bring your own car or hire a private driver via daytrip .

By organized tour: Due to the popularity of Interlaken, there are many organized day tours from Zurich to Interlaken. These tours usually include passes or guides to some of the many adventures in the town. Since Grindelwald is nearby, the packages also include a stopover at this beautiful town. Check out the packages from GetYourGuide , Viator , or Klook .

Going up against Zurich on the “Best City to Visit in Switzerland” race is Lucerne. So if you can do both, why don’t you?

Lucerne is widely known as Interlaken’s rival in terms of accessibility and activities. It has an incredibly preserved Old Town, the pristine Lake Lucerne, and the backdrop of the Alps just outside the city. There are many things to do in Lucerne that one day is hardly enough to enjoy the city.

However, if you can’t spare more than a day, make sure to include the Chapel Bridge in your itinerary. It’s the most iconic landmark of the city, built in the 14th Century and adorned with artwork and paintings. Once done, wander around the Old Town to see more landmarks like the Altes Rathaus (Town Hall) and the St. Peter’s Chapel, which is the oldest in the city.

Obviously, no visit to Lucerne will be complete without a trip to the banks of Lake Lucerne. It’s the fourth largest lake in Switzerland, offering a myriad of activities. You can rent a boat, go on an evening cruise, visit the parks, or simply find a spot and enjoy the view with Alpine peaks in the background.

By Train: Take a direct train from Zurich Main Station to Lucerne via SBB. The journey takes around 50 minutes to an hour.

By Car: The drive takes around an hour as well, traveling over 5km from Zurich to Lucerne.

Rhine Falls

Photo on Trend Hype

Rhine Falls is the mightiest fall in Central Europe. The water leaves Lake Constance and enters the Rhine River, where the water plunges down 21 meters over a 150-meter wide Jurassic limestone ledge. The water surge is strongest throughout June to July when snowmelt feeds into the Rhine River.

There are several great viewpoints to choose from. From the top, the falls are visible from either side. There are also 30-minute boat tours to view the falls from the bottom. At night, floodlights illuminate the falls, which is another good time to visit.

From the Schlössli Wörth, which used to be a shipping and reloading area from the 13th to the 19th century, guests can view the grandeur of the Rhine Falls while enjoying dinner at a fine-dining restaurant. It’s set on a tiny island at the bottom of the falls and the views from the terrace are spectacular.

By train: Take the S9 from Zurich to Neufhausen Rheinfall for the 50-minute train ride.

By car: Drive 50 kilometers via A1/A4, taking around 45 minutes.

By organized tour: Most tours from Zurich take half a day and already include the boat ride to see the falls.

Schaffhausen

Photo by MrFizzy on Trend Hype / CC BY-SA

Hit two birds with one stone when you take a day trip from Zurich to Schaffhausen. It’s one of the best-preserved medieval cities in Switzerland and just under an hour away from Zurich.

One of the main spots is Fronwagplatz, lined with beautiful timber-framed houses with oriel windows and coats of arms. A single-tower Munster built from 1087 to 1150 stands, formerly the church of a Benedictine abbey with delicate 12th-century arcades.

It currently houses the All Saints Museum with exhibits featuring prehistoric artifacts, religious art, period rooms, and artwork by modern Swiss artists. You can also visit Kastell Munot, distinct with its circular structure with five-meter thick walls.

From Schaffhausen, take a 5-minute train ride to Schloss Laufen and a two-minute walk to Rhine Falls.

By train: There are hourly trains that leave from Zurich to Schaffhausen. There are different timetables, but the fastest one takes 38 minutes via SBB.

By car: The drive to Schaffhausen is around 40 minutes covering 50 kilometers.

From Switzerland’s financial capital, head over to its real capital, Bern. Unlike many of the world’s capital cities, Bern is quiet and calm with a population of 500,000.

Bern’s Old Town is its crowning glory, named a UNESCO World Heritage for its streets of 17th- and 18th-century houses and establishments. Many of the city’s main attractions can be found in the Old Town, made more dramatic with its location atop a high ridge surrounded by the Aare River.

Its pretty arcades and cobblestone streets with a backdrop of river and Alps is something worth seeing.

There are several landmarks to check out, all marked on the tourist office’s city map. Some of the must-visits are the Zytglogge, an iconic astronomical clock built in 1530, or even the house where Albert Einstein was born.

By train: Many trains in Zurich travel to Bern. Travel time is a little bit over an hour.

By car: There are 123 kilometers between Zurich and Bern. Via the A1 motorway, you can reach Bern in an hour and 20 minutes.

Liechtenstein

Presse- und Informationsamt, Vaduz [ CC BY-SA 3.0 ], via Wikimedia Commons

Visiting another country while you’re in Switzerland is a bit of a novel idea, but it’s definitely possible from Zurich. Liechtenstein is a small principality between the borders of Switzerland and Austria. Its capital, Vaduz, is the smallest in all of Europe. The country is only 25-kilometers long, and exploring the best of it is absolutely possible in one day.

Vaduz is more like a town than a city, but its position on the banks of Rhine River gives it a trademark European charm. A walk through the town center brings you landmarks like the Town Hall where intriguing statues line the streets all the way to the National Archive. The neo-gothic architecture of the Vaduz Cathedral is also a sight to behold.

There are five castles to see, two of which – Schloss Vaduz and Burg Gutenberg – are still fully intact while the others are romantic ruins.

By train: There are several trains that leave Zurich to Vaduz. The fastest one leaves from Zurich Main Station with a transfer at Sargans before heading to Vaduz. This trip takes an hour and 21 minutes, while the longest trip via Feldkirch can take up to over 2 hours.

By car: The drive to Vaduz from Zurich will take a little over an hour covering 110 kilometers.

By Organized tour: Most tours package Liechtenstein and nearby Heidiland in a full-day trip. Check out these packages from Viator and Klook .

Appenzell isn’t a very popular place to visit, but that’s part of this small town’s charm. It’s a great introduction to rural Alpine life. Farming traditions are still very strong in the region, resulting in their famous Appenzell cheese. It’s a postcard-worthy place with brightly colored houses backed by green meadows and Alpine peaks.

Hiking is the most popular activity in Appenzell. There are several hills like Hoher Kasten, Saxer Luke, and the Marwees that offer breathtaking views. Don’t be deceived by the term “hill” though as these hikes can still be very taxing and are meant for true hiking enthusiasts.

Otherwise, take in this iconically Swiss experience through the town, passing through houses proudly waving Swiss flags and banners. There are many shops for visitors to sample local baked goods and cheeses and of course the Museum of Appenzell to know more about local customs and culture.

By train: There are many trains that head to Appenzell, at least two leaving every hour. The fastest train is via IR13 with a switch in St. Gallen and will take a little under 2 hours.

By car: The driver covers 90 kilometers and will take around an hour.

By organized tour: It’s easy to head to Appenzell by yourself, but since most people know little about this town, a guided tour can help visitors understand and appreciate the trip a lot more. There are several packages from GetYourGuide or Tours4fun .

Exploring Beyond Zurich

There is definitely a lot to do in Zurich for any kind of traveler. The city successfully marries tradition with modernity, preserving its history while keeping up with modern times.

However, part of the appeal of Zurich is its centrality, making day trips to different parts of Switzerland very easy and convenient. Whether it’s your first time or your nth time in the city, why not go beyond Zurich and find more places to explore?

Strolling across the Chapel Bridge felt like stepping into a living painting – if only my selfies could do it justice. And that Lion Monument? More emotionally moving than my attempt at yodeling (spoiler: it was a disaster).

Interlaken turned me into an adrenaline junkie! Paragliding felt like I was a bird, if birds screamed a lot. And Jungfraujoch? ‘Top of Europe’ is no joke – I was half expecting to bump into a yeti.

I wish I had read this article last year, I would have made most of my Swiss trip. thanks for all the details. You’re incredible!

10 day trips from Zurich

Whether you’re living in Zurich or just visiting for a few days, you should definitely take advantage of its great location to explore more of Switzerland and the neighboring countries.

But there are so many beautiful places in and around Switzerland that it can be hard to know where to start.

So here are 10 great day trips from Zurich for visitors and locals alike, based on my own experience of more than four years living and traveling in Heidi’s country .

Table of Contents

Day trips from Zurich:

#1 schaffhausen and the rhine falls.

Less than one hour from Zurich, Schaffhausen is a picturesque medieval town on the northeast corner of Switzerland, and one of the most beautiful Swiss old towns I’ve ever visited.

From Schaffhausen, you can also easily reach the impressive Rhine Falls, the largest waterfalls in Europe.

You can book a tour from Zurich to the Rhine Falls here.

  • Schaffhausen and the Rhine Falls

Switzerland tours from Zurich

Bern is the de facto capital of Switzerland, as the seat of the federal government and parliament.

Its gorgeous and unique old town is a feast for the eyes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Located less than one hour away, it makes for the perfect day trip from Zurich.

Book your day trip to Bern here.

  • Things to do in Bern

Zurich day trips

Basel is one of my favorite cities in all Switzerland and a highly recommended day trip from Zurich.

Located on the shores of the Rhine River, on the borders with France and Germany, Basel is a young and cosmopolitan city, due to its renowned university (the oldest in Switzerland), its pharmaceutical industry, and its vibrant art scene.

You can get from Zurich to Basel in about 50 minutes with the TGV.

  • Things to do in Basel

10 day trips from Zurich

#4 Gruyères

If you’re looking to try the best cheese fondue in Switzerland, look no further.

Considered the most beautiful village in French-speaking Switzerland, and home to the world-famous cheese with the same name, Gruyères is a delight to the senses.

Alien fanatic? There’s a museum (and a bar!) for you too here.

Lovely and delicious, Gruyères is totally worth the 2-hour drive from Zurich.

  • Things to do in Gruyeres

day tours from Zurich

#5 St Gallen

I visited St Gallen on a rainy day, but that didn’t prevent me from falling in love with this charming Swiss city near Lake Constance.

Just one hour from Zurich by car or train, St Gallen hides one of the oldest and most beautiful libraries in the world, a magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a wide range of art museums.

All good reason to take a day trip from Zurich to St Gallen regardless of the weather.

best day trips from Zurich

#6 Constance, Germany

A short 45-minute drive from Zurich, the city of Constance, in southern Germany, is a favorite shopping destination for many Zurich inhabitants, attracted by its malls and cheaper prices.

For any Zurich visitor, it’s also a great opportunity to set foot in neighboring Germany.

Constance has a lovely and well-preserved medieval district. But its top sight is scenic Lake Constance (or Bodensee), the largest lake on German territory.

Lake Constance is actually shared by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. Take a boat ride through the three countries and visit the towns around the lake, as well as its islands.

10 day trips from Zurich

#7 Colmar, France

The small French town of Colmar was on my travel bucket list for so long, and in 2019 I finally got to visit it.

I absolutely loved everything about it!

If you’ve ever seen a picture of Colmar, you know what I’m talking about: a lovely old town, with cobblestone streets, colorful facades and romantic canals, located less than two hours from Zurich.

Colmar is also famous for its Christmas market, considered one of the most beautiful in Europe.

10 day trips from Zurich

#8 Freiburg, Germany

Best known for its university and as the entry point to the Black Forrest, Freiburg, in southwest Germany, makes for another great day trip from Zurich.

Considered the warmest and sunniest place in Germany, the city has an undeniable French flair and a charm of its own.

A 2-hour drive from Zurich, Freiburg is closer to France and Switzerland than to any other larger German city.

10 day trips from Zurich

#9 Vaduz, Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest and least visited European countries.

This tiny country, tucked between Switzerland and Austria, has always exercised a fascination over me.

So, this year, I finally made the one hour and a half train and bus trip from Zurich to Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein.

And I was not disappointed.

From beautiful nature and a picturesque old town to a busy modern center, Vaduz has all the qualities of a European metropolis in a small, exquisite package.

day tours from Zurich Switzerland

#10 Lucerne

Considered by many as one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland, Lucerne is a mandatory day trip from Zurich.

Located on the shores of Lake Lucerne, overlooking the Swiss Alps, less than one hour from Zurich, Lucerne is also one of the most touristic swiss cities, and it’s easy to understand why.

The 14 th century Chapel Bridge over the Reuss River is its most famous landmark.

The city is also the gateway to the nearby Rigi, Pilatus, and Stanserhorn mountains.

You can book a day trip from Zurich to Lucerne and Mount Pilatus here.

10 day trips from Zurich

Of course, there are many other possible day trips from Zurich, especially if you’re a mountain lover. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it’s certainly a good starting point for exploring Switzerland and its bordering countries.

Well, so many possibilities, Zurich seems such a great base to explore the region, also thanks to the very good transport system. I cruised on Constance lake, but from Bregenz, Vorarlberg, Austria, will be nice to arrive from Zurich as well. Colmar is on my list forever seems like!

Beautiful photos. I love places that are easy to do day trips from – makes it easy to see a lot without moving all the stuff around. I will be adding this to my list of places to base out of!

These are some great ideas! Freiburg is one of my favorite cities in the world and Basel totally surprised me it was so awesome. Can’t wait to explore some of these others!

I was in Zurich a few weeks back. We did the day tour to Liechtenstein and Heidiland. It was amazing. Day trips allow you to see so much more 😊

Beautiful photos!! And fab ideas too, every time I see a photo of Colmar I just want to get in my car and keep driving until I get there! Liechtenstein really intrigues me, too. I feel like Zurich is probably expensive to stay but it would be fun to travel around to all these places in a trip!

I’m going to Zurich for the first time next month! Unfortunately I won’t have time to include any of these great day trips, but I guess that’s good enough reason to go back some day! I especially want to see Lucern and Basel!

April 14, 2018 at 2:33 pm

Who knew there was so much to see around Zurich? I haven’t been yet and was just planning a weekend break, but the places you’ve put on this list make me think I’ll want to stay a whole lot longer than that! I’m a massive fan of cheese fondue, so I’ll have to go to Gruyeres, and my husband has been to Lucerne for work but we’d love to go back to explore one day! How would you get to these places? By train I guess?

April 14, 2018 at 3:13 pm

Yes, by train or car. Public transportation is great in Switzerland but it can be a little expensive, so sometimes it’s actually better to rent a car.

best day trip from zurich

  • Last Updated: 25 Feb 2023
  • By Tanya, Swiss Family Fun

If you buy something through a link here, we may earn a commission. See our disclosure policy . Note that p rices and opening times may change without notice.

If you are visiting Zurich or live here and need to entertain guests, here are our favorite day trips from Zürich with options for all ages and abilities. I’ve included mountain viewpoints, scenic hikes, city tours, cultural activities, and fun excursions for kids.

Our family has lived in Zurich since 2005 and has done everything on this list multiple times. This is my go-to list when planning activities for our visitors. I hope you find it helpful.

Impressive mountain viewpoints

Hikes in the swiss alps, history & culture, fun for kids.

Note: Prices were updated in Oct 2023. Prices and opening times may change without notice.

The mountains in this section are popular destinations for tourists and locals. So during summer season, we suggest going early in the day and, if possible, on weekdays to avoid the largest crowds.

These outings are rather expensive, but remember you are paying for cable cars and trains that take you directly to the view without all the work of climbing up the mountain. Most of these mountains offer a 50% discount on cable car tickets if you have a Swiss Travel Pass , SBB Half-fare or GA. Make sure to show your pass purchasing your tickets.

1. Ebenalp Aescher Cliff Restaurant

I’ll bet you’ve seen a picture of Berggasthaus Aescher before. Now Instagram famous, this unique mountain restaurant is built into the side of the cliffs near Appenzell. This was our family’s very first Swiss mountain experience after moving here and I’ll never forget it!

best day trip from zurich

It’s pretty easy to access by first riding the Ebenalp cable car up the mountain. Then a short walk down through a cave and around the cliffs on a fenced wooden walkway leading to the restaurant. On the way you pass an old hermit’s hut and open air chapel, aka Wildkirchli, where you can learn about the history of this area.

The views from the patio tables are fantastic, with Mt Säntis and other impressive Alpstein peaks in the distance. No reservations here and it can get very crowded on weekends and sunny summer days. So best to go a bit early to beat the rush.

From the restaurant, there is a trail leading down to the Seealpsee, a beautiful alpine lake. However, there have been many deaths on this trail (five in 2022), so we only suggest it for experienced hikers with proper equipment who are comfortable with risk ( see trail info ). Alternatively, you can reach the Seealpsee by walking up the service road near the cable car parking and bus stop.

Quick info:

  • From Zurich: 1hr30 by car, 2hr10 by train
  • Cost: Cable car return ticket :  Adult CHF 34, Child CHF 14, under 6 free
  • Open: best May to Oct
  • Website: www.ebenalp.ch

2. Mount Rigi

When hosting visitors, Mount Rigi is usually our first choice for a Swiss mountain experience. Although we slightly prefer the drama of Mt Pilatus (next on the list), Rigi has the classic green alpine meadows and better hiking for casual hikers and families. Rigi also feels less crowded even in peak tourist season, because there’s more room for people to spread out. But both are great!

best day trip from zurich

As locals, we usually just directly to the base of mountain and catch the cogwheel mountain train to the top, which is the fastest route from Zurich. But when we have visitors, we always do the Rigi Classic Round Trip , starting with a boat ride from Lucerne to the mountain. It’s so much more fun and absolutely gorgeous.

Once you reach the mountain, you ride a cogwheel train to the top, where you can stroll to different viewpoints along the cliffs (safely behind a fence!). There is a restaurant at the top with a big outdoor terrace and lounge chairs for relaxing.

In summer, we highly recommend the hiking along the easy Panorama Trail , which can adjusted from 1 to 8 km depending on your energy level. The best version of this hike includes a gorgeous cliff walk built into the rock. In winter, even non-skiers can enjoy the snowy landscape by walking on the groomed snowy trails or sledding a few km down the mountain on prepared routes.

Learn more: Mt Rigi article
  • From Zurich: 40 mins to Rigi train / or 45 mins to Lucerne to catch boat – see Rigi on map
  • Cost 2023: Rigi train only Adult CHF 78 / round trip from Lucerne – Adult CHF 123 / discount with Swiss transit passes
  • Open: best May to Oct / open year round
  • Website: www.rigi.ch

3. Mt. Pilatus

If you are only in Switzerland for a short time, Pilatus would be my top pick because you get so much variety in one outing. Our favorite way to visit is on the Pilatus Golden Round Trip , which includes a boat ride from Lucerne city, super steep cogwheel mountain train to the top, and cable car down the other side of the mountain.

best day trip from zurich

At the top, you can safely enjoy the views from the large observation deck perched between rocky peaks, overlooking Lake Lucerne and many mountains. On a clear day, you can see all the way to the Eiger many miles away in the Jungfrau Region.

If you like to hike and aren’t afraid of heights, we definitely recommend doing one of the three short hikes to higher viewpoints. Our favorite is the cliff walk trail to the Tomlishorn peak viewpoint, about 3 km each way. This peak is higher than the Pilatus observation deck, so you get an entirely different perspective of the whole area.

For more excitement, we always stop at the middle station to ride a 1350m summer toboggan run , fun for both adults and kids. If you have lots of time, we also love the adventure ropes course in the forest with ziplines and free fall jumps.

For this excursion, you should plan for about six hours and get an early start, catching the boat around 9am. If you have less time, you can ride the cable car there and back with a return ticket .

4. Mount Titlis

If you want to see snow in summer, the best choice near Zurich is Mount Titlis, which has a glacier at the top, so you can play in the snow year round.

observation deck at the top of Mount Titlis

To get there, it’s a lovely drive or train ride to the quaint village Engelberg, nestled between many mountains. Then you ride cable cars up to 3238m (10623 ft), where you’ll find a large complex with viewing platforms inside and out.

We suggest starting your visit by walking through the ice tunnels built into the glacier. It’s a chilly walk, so definitely bring your jacket. Then a brief walk across the snow so you can cross the highest suspension bridge in Europe, aka the Titlis Cliff Walk. In summer, you can even sled on innertubes down a prepared route that keeps you safely on the mountain.

On the way back down, you should definitely stop at the Trübsee middle station to visit the alpine gorgeous lake. If you feel like walking, there’s a short and easy trail around the lake , possible in summer and winter. In summer, the trail has fun activities for kids, a large playground, and big air jump into inflated bouncy pillows.

For a full day excursion, you might enjoy this popular Titlis day trip from Zurich , which includes a tour of Lucerne, Titlis cable car tickets, and your train tickets there and back.

Learn more: See our Mt Titlis tips .

  • Cost: Titlis cable car return ticket Adult CHF 96

Famous mountains farther afield

If you are only staying in Zurich, you can still do day trips to see the most famous Swiss mountains: the Matterhorn and the Eiger. These destinations are about 3 hours each way from Zurich, by train or car. But the journey is so beautiful, I consider that part of the fun and not a waste at all. So if you don’t mind a long day, here are some options for you.

5. Zermatt Gornergrat

If you catch the 7am train from Zurich, you can be in Zermatt as early as 10am with only one connection. My favorite outing in Zermatt is riding up the Gornergrat mountain railway to a viewpoint over the impressive Gorner glacier with the Matterhorn also in view. Then ride the train one stop down to the Riffelsee lake pictured here and take the best selfie ever.

best day trip from zurich

If possible, I really recommend doing at least a short hike from the Riffelsee a little farther down the mountain. I describe all the hiking options in my Gornergrat Riffelsee Trail post .

6. Grindelwald & Jungfraujoch

The Jungfrau Region near Interlaken is one of the most popular destinations in Switzerland. If you can, I recommend staying a few days in this region so you can properly experience the full of it. But it’s totally doable as a day trip from Zurich if necessary. I’ve done it many times with my own family and with visitors.

best day trip from zurich

If you only have one day in the region, a popular choice is traveling to Grindelwald, then riding a cable car and mountain train to the Jungfraujoch observatory. From the “Top of Europe,” you can see the Aletsch Glacier, the longest glacier in the alps at about 22 km (but sadly shrinking quite rapidly). The Jungfraujoch has a variety of amusements including an ice cave and sledding on the glacier in summer.

Learn more in my Jungfraujoch post .

Since this is an expensive outing, I don’t recommend it that often because there are many other wonderful outings that cost much less. But everyone I’ve talked to raves about it. After 17 years visiting us in Switzerland, I finally took my dad there last summer and after the visit, he said “Everyone should go here! It’s absolutely amazing!”

You can book each leg of the journey separately or book a convenient Zurich day trip to Jungfraujoch package that includes all the elements.

So you don’t get overwhelmed, I’ve picked just three of my favorites hikes near Zurich to get you started. I have a variety of difficulty levels, so there’s something for everyone. For more ideas, see the Most Spectacular Hikes near Zurich  and Easy hikes near Zurich for Beginners .

These hikes are best done from late June to early October, but check the relevant websites for exact opening times. Conditions may vary if snow stays late in the alps.

7. Flumserberg Alpine Flora Trail (easy)

This super easy and short trail is my first choice for visitors that never hike, have mobility issues or very small children. You get all the beauty and charm of the alps with very minimal effort. If my 85 year old grandmother can do this trail, so you can you!

best day trip from zurich

This trail is super easy, just 2 km around a little mountain peak, with no up and down. The path is smooth dirt and gravel, possible with strollers and wheelchairs. Along the way you can rest on benches and loungers if necessary.

The Flumserberg area has excellent train connections to Zurich, making it one of the easiest and fastest mountains to reach near Zurich. Our favorite time to hike there is mid July to early August when the wildflowers are out in force and green alpine meadows stretch in every direction.

If you want to walk a little farther, you can continue along the ridge on the Geological theme trail, described in my post linked below.

See trail map and directions for  Flumserberg Alpine Flora Trail
  • From Zurich:  1hr15 by car or train •  See on map
  • Hike: 40 mins • 2 k loop • 80m up & down
  • Cost: Adult CHF 32, children under 12 free

8. Stoos Ridgeline (medium)

Even though dramatic ridge hike has become quite popular in recent years, I still love it and hike it almost every summer. Although this trail is only 4 km and is not terribly difficult, it does have a lot of up and down and steep slopes off the sides without barriers. So this trail is best done by experienced hikers with sturdy hiking shoes and good fitness level.

best day trip from zurich

To each the trail, you start by riding the steepest funicular train in the world, whisking you up to an idyllic alpine village in just a few minutes. Then a chair lift up to the ridge, where you will enjoy views over the cliffs down to Lake Lucerne for the next 90 mins or so.

The trail ends at the Fronalpstock viewpoint, which non-hikers can reach with a chair lift (also in winter). From there, you can safely admire the view from a fenced observation deck, restaurant terrace, and a safely enclosed picnic area with a playground for children. If you took the easy way up, you can still take a short stroll along the cliffs on the easy panorama loop trail .

Learn more: Stoos Ridgeline Hike
  • From Zurich: 45 mins by car, 1h10 by train/bus
  • Hike: 2 hours • 4.5 km • 290m up, 300m down
  • Cost: mountain lifts Adult CHF 50 / discount with Swiss transit passes

9. Pizol Five Lakes

For a fitness challenge and gorgeous scenery, the popular hike at Pizol is a perfect choice. You start by riding a gondola and two chair lifts high up the mountain to reach the first lake and a mountain hut.

From here, the first climb begins to reach the lake shown below in about an hour. Then the trail goes down, up, down, a few times as you visit three more beautiful lakes scattered along an impressive mountainous landscape. I suggest this for hikers with good fitness and kids ages 8+ as it takes experience and endurance to complete it.

best day trip from zurich

Pizol is very easy to reach from Zurich by car or train, since the gondola leaves from the valley near the freeway. No curvy narrow mountain roads to reach this one. This hike is extremely popular, so you will not be alone on the trail, with big hiking groups constantly streaming by both directions. But we still love it.

Learn more: Pizol Five Lakes Hike
  • From Zurich: 1 hour by car, 1h10 by train/bus
  • Hike: 4.5 hours • 10 km • 440m up, 590m down

10. Lindt Home of Chocolate

The closest chocolate factory to Zurich is Lindt Home of Chocolate. It has a beautiful tour and interactive museum, with an immense amount of information about bean to bar chocolate production and the history of chocolate, particularly in Switzerland.

The audio guide is packed full of information, more than the average person may want to consume in one visit. Happily, they provide a children’s version of the audio guide, which is more entertaining. There are also a few games and activities for kids scattered through the tour.

best day trip from zurich

We love the chocolate tasting stations through the museum, including chocolate fountains and a dispenser where you have to guess the chocolate flavor. They also offer chocolate making workshops, which are particularly popular for holidays like Christmas and Easter where you make the signature bear and bunny shaped chocolates.

If you are visiting Zurich, you can book a Zurich City Tour that includes a lake cruise to Lindt and the chocolate factory tour. This would be a fun and efficient use of your time in the city.

11. Appenzell Show Dairy

Since cheese is integral to Swiss culture, I suggest visiting the Appenzeller Show Dairy, the closest dairy near Zurich. Our family enjoyed the multimedia museum where you learn about the history and culture of cheese making in the Appenzeller region. They have lots videos, games, and interactive elements that kids will enjoy.

Every day until 15:00, you can also observe cheese being made on the factory floor. We watched the cheese making for about 45 mins around lunchtime and it was pretty exciting, as far as cheese making goes. We saw them unmold freshly pressed cheese rounds, then fill up the empty molds with new curds and prepare it for pressing.

best day trip from zurich

With your entrance ticket, you receive a small box of cheese to sample, which is a nice extra. At the restaurant, you can eat fondue and other traditional cheese dishes.

Our kids also appreciated the outdoor playground with a swing, slides and climbing wall. If you are particularly interested in history, you can buy a combo ticket with the Appenzeller Folklore Museum next door.

12. Lenzburg Castle

The best castle near Zürich is Schloss Lenzberg, one of the oldest and more important hilltop castles in Switzerland with a history dating back to the 12th century. You can tour many rooms inside the castle, with rooms set up to show what it would be like to live in the castle in different eras.

exterior of Lenzburg Castle in Aargau Switzerland

We appreciate the many interactive multimedia exhibits, which make learning fun. If you are visiting with children, they will love the children’s play area at the top of the castle. It has a dress-up clothes, craft area, wooden castle to act out sword fights, and a toddler corner for weary parents. This castle is also home to Fauchi, an animatronic dragon, which terrified my 2 year old, but is fun for the older ones.

For lunch, there’s a small cafeteria with a lovely outside garden and dragon picture books for the kiddies to read while they wait for the food. Or you can picnic in the spacious courtyard which hosts many parties. The castle grounds are lovely to stroll and also have an outdoor play area for kids with play houses.

If you really love castles, I also suggest a longer day trip down to the Bellizona Castles in southern Switzerland. These are a protected UNESCO World Heritage site and very impressive. Learn how to visit the Bellinzona Castles .

The Swiss alps are full of fun activities for kids, including theme trails, alpine coasters, mountain scooters, and climbing parks. Below are a few of our family favorites near Zurich. See also Best hikes for kids near Zurich .

13. Toggenburg Tone Trail

Many Swiss mountains have theme trails for kids, with activities scattered along the way to keep them happy and motivated. Near Zurich, our favorite is the Toggenburg Tone Trail , which has a musical theme.

best day trip from zurich

Every few minutes along the trail, you’ll find an interactive musical activity where kids can play and make lots of noise. Since kids can often see or hear the next music station ahead, they are motivated to keep walking to see what’s next.

We usually spend about four hours on the trail, playing at every station along the way and grilling our lunch. The trail has a few short uphill sections, but not difficult. They have a stroller version of trail, with a few diversions off the main trail.

14. Pizol Heidi Trail

If you want a Swiss theme on the trail, the Pizol Heidi trail is fun choice choice for families. This easy loop trail in the mountains has several stations where children can play and search for clues to solve a puzzle.

best day trip from zurich

Along the way, there is a barefoot path, hammock forest, playground and restaurant. The kids get a little trail passport that they stamp in the mouth of the wooden goats along the trail. This trail is only 4 km and is possible with strollers.

15. Elm Theme Trail & Mountain Scooters

Elm is a beautiful mountain resort with a fun theme trail around the story of “Giants in the Forest.” The gondola takes you to a fun play area with trampolines and gorgeous mountain views. Then along the short trail, there is a an obstacle course, small suspension bridge, giant xylophone, an over-sized picnic table and forest kitchen, and much more.

best day trip from zurich

The walking path is wide and smooth, possible with strollers. Much of the trail is in the forest, so it’s great for hot summer days. After the hike, we suggest that you skip the gondola and instead ride down on big wheel kick scooters or low rider go-carts.

16. Flumserberg alpine coasters & climbing park

If you need a little more excitement, Flumserberg has a 1.2 km alpine coaster with a fixed rail car. You can either ride a chair lift or hike to reach the coaster. We usually use this as a treat after the Flumserberg 4 Peak hike in the mountains above the coaster.

In another part of the resort, they have the CLIIMBER ropes course with a wide variety of obstacles and varying levels of difficulty. We like the flexibility of the regular courses, which allow you to pick and choose your obstacles instead of completing a full pre-determined course.

The mini-course for kids 4+ has an “always on” safety harness, making safer and easier to use for the small ones. Learn more about the Flumserberg Ropes Course .

If you like strolling cities and villages, there are a lot of nice options near Zurich. Here are a few places we often take our visitors.

17. Stein am Rhein & Rhine Falls

The Rhine falls are one of the most popular tourist destinations near Zurich, the highest volume falls in Europe. We usually combine this outing with visiting the medieval city, Stein am Rhein, just a few minutes up river from the falls.

best day trip from zurich

At the falls, you can get close to the raging waters from a stairway and platforms built along the rocks at the side of the falls. For a real thrill, you can also ride a boat to the center of the falls and climb up a tall rock as shown in the pic here (boat runs April to October). Not quite Niagara falls, but still pretty fun.

Learn more about visiting Rhine Falls .

best day trip from zurich

Stein am Rhein is a tiny jewel on the banks of the Rhine river with a long history. It looks exactly like what you imagine Europe should look like, with cobblestone pedestrian-only streets, half-timbered construction, ornate window treatments, and elaborate paintings decorating many buildings. It’s small, so stroll slowly savoring all the details then settle into an outdoor café for refreshments.

If you are going by car, it’s quite easy to find with good signage and large parking lots at both destinations. If you are traveling by public transportation, you can take a train to the falls and the village. But you might find it more convenient to book a scenic bus tour from Zurich that visits both locations and includes your entrance to the falls viewing area and a village guided tour.

  • Rhine falls: 40 mins by car, 1h10 by train – see on map
  • Stein am Rhein: 50 mins by car, 1h15 by train – see on map

18. Rapperswil with Zurich lake cruise

Rapperswil is a small historic town at the southern end of Lake Zurich. You can reach Rapperwsil by car, train, or lake cruise from Zurich, which is our favorite. For a longer day trip, you can book a scenic bus tour that visits Rapperswil, as well as alpine areas in Heidiland and Liechtenstein.

best day trip from zurich

Rapperswil has a cute old town center, picturesque castle on a hill, and a lovely lakeside promenade with lots of cafes, pizza, and ice cream. The self-guided walking tour through town is short, but interesting, with beautiful views from the castle terrace above the town.

Our kids enjoyed the activity path along the castle walls and big playground with grassy fields below the castle. For more views, you can wander the long wooden walkway built into the lake, a great place to observe birds.

19. Lucerne

Our top choice for city tours is Lucerne, which is an easy drive or direct train ride from Zurich. Lucerne has a charming old town with an fascinatingly history, plus gorgeous views of the Swiss alps across the lake.

tower bridge over Reuss river in Lucerne city

From the tourist info at the train station, you can pick up a free map with a self-guided walking tour. If possible, we suggest doing a guided walking tour as the history of this city is so interesting and more compelling when told by an entertaining guide. Here are some popular tour options:

  • On Wednesdays and Saturdays, Luzern Tourism offers a 90 min guided walking tour .
  • With kids, you can do a scavenger hunt walking tour with audio guide
  • Less walking with a TukTuk city tour

Note that some of the highlights, like the city wall and Lion Monument, are a bit of walk from the town center. We think the they are worth the extra effort, but maybe skip them if you are traveling with very small children. If you like walking, we suggest ending your tour by walking down the lakeside promenade as far as your legs will go, then ride the bus back to the city center.

See our self-guided Lucerne walking tour
  • From Zurich by car: 45 mins / parking at Parkhaus Altstadt – Baselstrasse 4, 6003 Luzern
  • From Zurich by train: 41 mins to Luzern, Bahnhof

I always take my visitors to Zug, a small city on a lake overlooking the mountains. From Zurich, it’s a very short drive or train ride to Zug, so perfect for a short outing if your guests are low on energy.

best day trip from zurich

We usually start by strolling through the historic center, where you’ll want to take lots of photos. The streets are narrow and winding, with lots of cute storefronts and interesting architectural details. Then we get gelato and stroll along the lake admiring the view.

If you are with kids, you might like the Sato Code trail , an outdoor escape room that has you look for clues and solve puzzles as you wander the town. My teen boys loved racing around trying to beat the best time. There’s also a scavenger hunt walking tour that includes more historical information about the city as you walk.

One Day In Zurich Travel Guide For A Zurich City Break

Luxurious financial capital of switzerland with a cultural flare.

Z urich is a beautiful city that offers plenty of attractions and activities for solo travelers. It is a city filled with art, history, the amazing shopping, as well as close to nature. Everyone can find something to suit their taste in this Swiss metropolis. Here are some ideas on how to spend 24 hours in Zurich as a solo traveler.

The city has long been known as the financial capital of Europe, but it also has rich history since the Roman times. Zurich, like Geneva Switzerland, is two of the most expensive cities in the world. While Zurich may not be known as a cultural city with a decent nightlife scene, it actually is undercover really cool. It shouldn’t be missed even if you only have 24 hours to spare.

One way to do this is to make this a one-night stopover on your trip. Arrive early, take a bus or free walking tour in the morning. Keep your schedule flexible, but you may want to make reservations for two hot items on the visit, namely a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Factory or a great food tour with some Swiss Fondue as well as some other foodie hot spots. Below are some suggestions for all budgets visiting Zurich for 24 hours.A day or two in Zurich can give you a great introduction to the German speaking area of Switzerland.

A Brief History of Zurich

Zurich dates back to 15 BC and was founded by the Romans. It was part of a route that permitted trade to travel over the Alps. While we know it has Zurich, the Romans called it Turicum. If you tour the city some ruins remain under parts of the city. The city prospered in the 11th and 12th centuries, helped by the Fraumunster, which as a convent attracted many rich European princesses.

In 1351, Zurich joined the Swiss Federation and during the 14th and 15th centuries, its territory was exclusively established for trade and money lending. Until the end of the Old Zurich War (1436-1450), it swayed between remaining with the Swiss Federation and Austria. Switzerland became an independent country in 1815, with its 1848 constitution not permitting them to enter any wars. Zurich remains the country’s largest city, with the largest airport in the country (with fantastic shopping), and its financial capital.

Zurich Itinerary For One Day In Zurich

The city is well-located in Central Switzerland and they say, is the heart of Europe with its beautiful city. Notably, you can get to Zurich by car, bus, train, or airplane with many airlines offering services. I arrived by plane to allow both visiting times that day, with a night stay, to allow a full day to make a 24-hour trip, although some may want to add a day depending on your interests.

Next, I looked into my top choices to visit in case they required a reservation. Lindt Chocolate is so popular it was sold out for a few days, so make sure you make reservations if you are a chocolate lover like me! (Luckily I did make it on a tour to get my supply of chocolates for my trip.) Also, it may depend on your budget, but various things are free like walking through the old town or around the lake, It also ma

How to Get to Zurich Switzerland and “Where is Zurich”?

Zurich is in Central Europe and a hub for many modes of transportation, making it a great and easy place to visit.

  • Main Zurich Train Station: You may find yourself coming to Zurich Hauptbahnhof (also called Zurich HB); it is the largest train station in Switzerland. It is about 6 miles from the airport in Zurich. Most local trains come through this station. I chose to buy a 24-hour transportation card called the Zurich Card City Pass. Notably, it can be purchased for a 24 or 72-hour timeframe and entitles you to travel on an unlimited 2nd class basis on any public transportation. You can buy it via the Zurich City Guide app or at the station. The price is reasonable and it does cover you on the river/boat, public transportation on the lake, as well as the funiculars like the Polybahn. The Polybahn connects the central square with the Polyterrasse via its historic red funicular originally built in 1889. It is only a short ride of a few minutes but is free and you can get the best views of Zurich. Check online for train hours since it is closed on holidays and Sundays.
  • Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the major international airport in Switzerland and home to Swiss International Airlines. This is how I made it to Zurich, I also loved the airport with all its upscale stores and some great places to eat. The airport is a short 15-minute train ride from the City Centre. Notably, the city is pretty compact, especially the historic old town, so it is easy to see,

Best Place To Stay In Zurich For All Budgets

I arrived in Zurich and planned to stay overnight so I can see more of this historic city. Being one of the most expensive cities in Europe, I am showing a few options below, but there are also some large chains here.

  • FIVE Zurich Hotel – Luxury city resort @fivezurich

www.zurich.fivehotelsandresorts.com

Hotel Hirschen: This 4-star hotel has a quaint charming ambiance while offering helpful amenities. It dates back to the 14th century and is one of the oldest hotels in the city. It is also well-located within a ½ mile from the Swiss National Museum.

  • Motel One Zurich – This 3-star hotel offers a breakfast buffet, etc.

@motel_one  www.motel-one.com

  • CitizenM Zurich: CitizenM is a hip boutique hotel located in the business district of Zurich. @citizenM   www.citizenM.com
  • For a fun and hip hotel check out 25Hours Hotel Zurich Langstrasse is located close to the train station, and its’ decorations are inspired by the contrast between capitalism and the redlight district. The designer Werner Aisslinger created an artistic and fun hotel close to everything and perfect for a 24-hour stay in Zurich. If you aren’t staying there check out the NENI restaurant with an eclectic menu of Mediterranean cuisine.
  • Old Town Otter Hostel: This former hotel is now a hostel. There are 45 beds in 9 dorms and 5 private rooms and it is well-located near the Old Town and Lake. It does have free coffee/tea and a small breakfast like toast and muesli.  www.oldtownzurich.com
  • By the Airport I also stayed at the Capsule Hotel. Check out the video below

Besides these options, there are the hotels including Marriott, Hilton, etc, as well as AirBnB, VRBO, etc.

Things to Do in Zurich Switzerland

Although it is known as an expensive city, there are various things to do in Zurich for all budget levels.

  • Swiss Food Tour: This was a fantastic food tour and this company offers lunchtime and evening tours. If you plan to take a tour, I would make a reservation, since some do sell out.  www.swissfoodtours.com  If you want to experience an elevated foodie experience there are two options a private food tour like I took or an option for those looking to experience the food scene on a small group tour. My guide took me to places I would never have found on my own and also shared a range of both local cuisine and fun cocktail spots. The private tours can be catered to your interests and had a few special surprises. However, you will have to subscribe to my Youtube channel so you don’t miss the Swiss travel adventures.
  • Archeological Windows Zurich- If you want to satisfy your inner Indiana Jones, check out the Archeological windows where you can get a key from the city in order to see the ancient roman ruins underground. I learned about this and got to try it out thanks to my amazing tour guide at Swiss Food Tours on the private tour.

Take A Chocolate Tour

  • Lindt Home of Chocolate Tour: This self-guided tour takes about 2 hours. It was awesome, but I almost missed it so make sure you reserve in advance. I particularly loved the all-you-can-drink chocolate, learning about the history of chocolate in Switzerland, as well as getting to take home plenty of samples. They also have the world’s largest retail Lindt store. This is a must if you are a chocolate lover! If you go on the self guided tour it is about $16 USD plus the cost of taking public transit. However, there is also a sweet small group tour that includes a tour, boat trip on Lake Zurich, and transportation if you don’t feel like going solo.

Explore the History, Culture Art of Zurich, Switzerland

  • Walking Tours: There are both free tours (Free Walking Tours Zurich) and paid tours. It’s a great way to learn more about the area, especially the history and culture of the city. Also, this is the perfect activity if you are solo traveling to meet other travelers.  www.freewalk.ch
  • What is Dada? It is an art form that formed during the First world war, and its main purpose was to challenge social norms of society and make art that would shock, confuse or outrage people. Dadaism’s main purpose was to challenge the social norms of society, and purposefully make art that would shock, confuse, or outrage people. Here you can explore the largest collection of DADA art in the world.

Explore Old Town Zurich

  • Zurich’s Old Town known as Altstadt: Stroll the streets of historic Zurich and its lovely buildings, stores, and restaurants. It is along both sides of the Limmat River and it’s free to stroll the area. This area encompasses everything built in Zurich before 1893.
  • Roman Ruins: In, under, and around Zurich are some old Roman ruins since it was once inhabited by the Romans. There is one free site called the Archeological Window in the Lindenhof cellar. While it is free through the Town Hall, you need to leave a credit card as a deposit so they get back the key to it. There are also other locations like the opera house. It just depends on your time and level of interest.
  • River Transport or Boat at Lake Zurich: If you have a Zurich Card pass, you can use public transport on the river or the lake. Zurich’s Old town hugs the Limmet river on both sides, and is something to witness by water. Luckily it is included in your day pass for public transit!  www.zuerich.com

More Things To Do In One Day In Zurich

  • Ride on the Polybahn (Funclaire): For a great view of the city, go up the furnclair. It goes up to have a great view of the city. It is located near the universities and you can have a drink or food up there, or make your own picnic..  www.polybarn.ch
  • Swiss National Museum: This unique building was constructed in 1898 similar to a French Renaissance chateau. Check opening hours, but is generally open from 10 am-5 pm Tuesday through Sunday, although it is open until 7 pm on Thursday. It costs ten Swiss francs. Although it’s free for kids under 16 and Zurich Card holders.  www.landesmuseum.ch
  • Zurich Opera House: The opera house is a lovely building, housing the Zurich Opera since 1891 and It is also home to the Zurich Ballet. So you may enjoy a performance or just see this grand building.  www.opernhaus.c om
  • Retail Therapy – walk the Bahnhofstrasse: This is the most exclusive avenue for luxury shopping. Stroll the avenue.

The Four Churches of Zurich Old Town

  • Grossmunster Church: This twin-tower romanesque protestant church is an icon in the city. It is free to go in but there is a cost to climb the tower,
  • Fraumunster Church: Another iconic church with a copper-topped spire. The church does have a crypt museum and stained glass by Marc Chagall.
  • St.Peter’s Church: This protestant church is one of the four main churches in the Old Town area of Zurich, This church was consecrated in 1706, the bells date back to the 1880s, and the church was restored in the 1970s. Oddly the church steeple is owned by Zurich, while the rest is owned by the parish. The church’s clock is very large, having the largest face in all of Europe.
  • Predigerkirche Church: Explore the 4th oldest church in Zurich’s Old Town. Predigerkirche is known for it’s high steeple and being the highest edifice in Zurich.

My advice is to plan out your route saving the locations on Google Maps so you maximize the use of your time.

Food in Zurich, Switzerland – Restaurants, Cafes, and Cheap Eats In Zurich

Given I had a fantastic food tour that takes 3-4 hours of your day. I decided to eat some smaller meals in cafes too. The Swiss Food Tour I mentioned above was superb. There are also so many restaurants and cafes to try, including many with Michelin stars. You can’t forget to try the Cheese Fondue and Rosti (fried potato pancake), Here are some suggestions of places to try:

  • Cafe & Conditorei 1842: This cafe offers great homemade chocolate and pastries, and is a cozy baroque setting. There is also a terrace depending on the weather, (Hint: I had the best hot chocolate here, it’s a bit more but I enjoyed it. www.cafe1842.ch Do yourself a favor and get the hot chocolate here!
  • Raphael’s: Raphael’s has great handmade chocolates, coffee, and ice cream. So many great options.  www.raphaels1989.com  I am a coffee fanatic, so I loved recharging my energy with a great latte here.
  • Le Dezeley for Fondue! I was lucky to find this place on the Swiss food tour and this place rivaled the fondue spot I found in Geneva.
  • Best View and cocktails (or mocktails): Jules Verne Panorama Bar is great for creative cocktails or cocktails and has the best view of the city all year round. It is located in an old observatory, which makes the experience extra special.
  • Best Bakery: Bäckerei Vohdin is the oldest bakery in Zurich selling traditional sweets and baked goods. It is cash only. I was lucky to try it thanks to the kindness of a stranger who bought me two sweets to try before I left on the plane. It is also really close to Old Town Otter Hostel so perfect for budget-friendly breakfast or lunch!

Recommendation

Zurich Switzerland is a culturally rich city, and not just the banking capital of Switzerland. Many tourists skip Zurich to see other picturesque Swiss towns or head to the Swiss Alps, but it is definitely worth at least 24 hours. Being one of the major hubs in Europe, it is very easy to reach and explore in a one or two-day stopover. Zurich maybe expensive, but there are still things to do in a day in Zurich for all budgets as well as solo travelers. While planning your trip, remember you may want to make reservations ahead of time, especially for the Lindt Chocolate Museum and food tours.

If you are visiting for a short amount of time just use your card because Switzerland uses a different currency from the rest of Europe. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc.

In conclusion, there are many things to enjoy in Zurich from food and nightlife to cultural experiences and museums. It may be one of the most expensive cities in Europe, but there are plenty of things to do in Zurich for all budgets and it is a place you should not skip if it is close to your other European adventures.

Fun Zurich Fact

There are over 1,200 fountains in Zurich. Bring a reusable water bottle because the water is drinkable.

Also, there are four official languages in Switzerland including Swiss German, French, and Italian, and about 60,000 people speak Romansch. Zurich is located in the Swiss German section of Switzerland so be sure to brush up on a few phrases although most people speak English in the city center.

What would you not miss in Zurich if you only had 24 hours? Save this for later to help plan your trip!
