Star Trek experience lets you virtually walk around every Starship Enterprise bridge

The roddenberry archive team is working to launch more star trek virtual experiences in the future..

The USS Enterprise has gone through several iterations across TV shows and movies, and now Star Trek fans can explore them as much as they want to online. As Deadline reports, the latest update to the Roddenberry Archive adds 360-degree virtual recreations of the famous Starship Enterprise bridge as depicted in various Star Trek properties. It has the bridge from Star Trek: The Original Series , Picard , Discovery and Strange New Worlds , arranged according to timeline in the new web portal . Fans can click on the version of the Enterprise they want to see and then expand the virtual bridge, which they can drag around and explore to see its beeping panels and displays.

The Roddenberry Archive is a multi-decade collaboration between the estate of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and cloud graphics company OTOY. This is their largest set of digital archive works to date, and it was launched with accompanying videos, including a William Shatner interview with a holographic version of the 1979 USS Enterprise bridge as a background. John de Lancie, who has portrayed Q since 1987’s Star Trek: The Next Generation , also narrates the history of the Starship Enterprise bridge across decades of shows and movies.

The Roddenberry Archive team is working to add more virtual set recreations fans can explore in the future aside from the ones already available. One of the projects they're working on is a 1:1 scale recreation of the entire Starship Enterprise from the 1979 film Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

TOS_Bridge

Ever wanted to walk through the Enterprise NCC-1701 in all its glory, just as it was when William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy walked its halls in the 1960s? Well now, thanks to Matterport , an immersive 3D scanning technology, and Star Trek Continues, whose sets are near-perfect replicas (in design and layout) of the 1960s TOS DesiLu sets, you can!

Walk The Halls of The Enterprise (no bloody A, B, C, or D) Matterport, a Silicon Valley based startup, is bringing the world a new way to engage with interior spaces online. Often described as “Google Street View for inside spaces”, Matterport lets you walk through, zoom in on, and pan around virtual inside worlds like homes, libraries, and now the Big E. The 3D scans are captured with a specially designed Matterport camera, which combines sweeps of still images with a virtual 3D model of the space created from infrared data captured along with the visual stills and processed by Matterport servers. The Matterport rig is surprisingly easy to use and produces a fantastic result with little effort from the end-user.

Rick Mann , Senior Engineer at Matterport and huge Star Trek fan recently teamed up with Vic Mignogna and the Star Trek Continues crew to deploy his company’s tech at their Georgia-based studio (also shared with the Starship Farragut team). You can tour the bridge, walk the corridors, and even play around in the brand new engineering section. The scans start you off in the “doll house” view, giving you an overhead shot of everything captured by the cameras. You can then zoom in, walk around, and get immersed!

John de Lancie To Appear In Next Episode Of Star Trek Continues; Series To End In October

That’s just cool…

Love this stuff. If only this was around when I was a kid. Oh well better late than never!

I feel like the little kid from The Incredibles:

“THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!”

Engineering doesn’t look quite right. Can’t put my finger on it. But I’m assuming they are in the process of building it and it’s not completed. I miss the big pieces on the right. I hope they are going to build the 2nd floor control room that looks out on Engineering. Always loved that perspective.

Fascinating

Dream come true. “Chewie, We’re home!”

Great presentation – Can’t believe how good it looks!

That is just awesome! Created some TOS episodes as a teen in the late 70’s using miniatures. Could never afford to build full size sets like this. Outstanding! It would be great if tours could somehow be made available. Could raise some funds. But, I’m sure the risk of damage and liability make this next to impossible. To Vic and everyone involved with Star Trek Continues, thank you for keeping the dream alive. Great work!

I rather enjoyed that!

Want more! Want more!!

And oh yeah-

Great stuff Mr. Mann. Thank you. And thanks Mr. Mignoga and co.

And as always-

Thanks Kayla!

That is cool. I still have Captain’s Chair which I run on an old PowerMac G4 specifically for that one purpose.

Don’t forget the genius that went into the cinematography.

Whoa. This is cool.

There are currently four bridge sets extant in the United States. I’ve been on two of them–and as a lifelong fan the feeling was just incredible, being immersed in the primary environment where so many of those wonderful stories played out. Fifty years on, what a tribute this is to Roddenberry, Jeffries, and the countless others who did their best given the resources at hand (and network and studio indifference) to finally get SF on television done right.

Makes me miss the Enterprise build that Jack Marshall and I (and others) worked on several years ago in Second Life. We had to reason out a lot of the internal spaces, including Doug Drexler’s Jefferies tube areas that were featured in ‘In a Mirror, Darkly’. Nice to see the engineering set, such as it is, has the arched crossbeams over the ceiling. I always figured it was near the top of the engineering hull, so I liked having those arches to give that semblance. As a 3D modeler and Star Trek fan (especially TOS), I love how much attention to detail they paid.

Much better than what I built as a kid with my parent’s living room furniture.

That’s very cool. I especially like that it’s a walkthrough of the SET. For me, seeing the gaps and imperfections, the lights and scaffolding and all the rest only adds to the magic. That’s what film-making is all about in my mind!

OT – Not sure where to put this

Two scifi franchises lost one of their biggest fans on 30 November at 4.57am (NZ time). He was Dave/Koro. He was 85 years old and he was my father-in-law. The cause of death was a subdural haematoma. We are still coming to terms with it…

Dave, or *Koro as we often called him, was a great Dr Who and Star Trek fan from way, way back. Just as my family and I sat down to watch TOS on a Thursday at 8.00pm and then on Saturday at 8.00 pm (in the 1960s), he was doing the same his two sons in a different part of Auckland. Later one of those sons became my husband and father of my three children.

In those days, he worked full time and studied at nights. However, Star Trek was the only TV programme (apart from the News) he would make time to watch (with his family). That says a lot about how much he liked the series.

Koro spoke fluent Maori and French as well and had started learning a little Mandarin (Chinese). At one time, a free-to-air TV channel presented news programmes and other from places like France and Germany – good stuff too! Koro always watch the French newscasts, spoken in French, as a way of keeping up his French language knowledge and because he was interested in what was going on in France. However, the channel no longer operates (or is no longer free-to-air) so Koro decided to watch Star Trek episodes on DVD in French.

A lovely memory I have is walking into the house, hearing that all too familiar TOS music, except that everyone was speaking French. The episode was “Spock’s Brain” and Koro was sitting there, quietly chuckling away as he watched…:)!

It was only a couple of weeks ago that I sat with him watching, en francais, TNG’s Drumhead. I learned a little French when I was younger but I could not understand much at all, but he did. That was OK though. In fact, it was more than cool.

My sons and I managed to get on DVD all the Star Trek TV episodes ever made and Koro did indeed watch episodes from all the series, sometimes in English, sometimes in French.

On Friday (28/11/15) he walked to the Remuera Library and back, which is about a mile away. That was nothing unusual. He would walk to the Auckland Museum (about 5? miles away) and sometimes walk back or catch a bus. He went to the museum last Tuesday. He had various health problems that came with age, but they were being managed. He had been slowing down, but not certainly out, not by a long shot.

Son Luke, who has been living with him for the past four years, is a bit more devastated than the rest of us. *Luke adored his Koro*!

Anyway, I just wanted to share for anyone interested… *Koro is the Maori word for grandfather or elder.

Very sorry for your loss, Rose, he sounds like a great Trek fan and, no doubt, an even greater father and father-in-law. May you and your family find peace and comfort in the difficult days ahead.

Outstanding. What a great way to show the splendor of those sets to those that may not get a chance to see them in person. This technology is incredible. Fairly soon I’m sure, we’ll have holodecks that will then generate interactive 3-D sets!

So, how exactly does this differ from Quicktime VR? Back in the 90s there was an interactive TNG encyclopedia that had these great walkthroughs of the TNG sets.

Serious question, not snark.

I can’t wait for a TNG era fan film production! :)

Cool. First thing I did was pull out my copy of The Making of Star Trek (well, one of them) and compare and contrast with the original stage 9 layout of the sets on pages 144-145. This is great! >;>}

Very nice way to show of the sets. The tech is not really new – QuicktimeVR is very similar, you just have more points as it seems and a fade between them. A little disappointed with their Engineering set – I thought it was a full set and not just one side. Although we rarely see the other side.

I told the New Voyages guys to do this in 2004 and they said ‘yeah maybe someday’. Looks like they’ve been beaten yet again, is there really any way that STC hasn’t trumped them?

Gonna be using this imagery for bluescreening in my own fanfilm btw, no hard feelings Vic.

Very beautiful and touching remembrance of your “Koro” Keachick. You and Trek were lucky to be part of his life.

Does not work. My browser is 3D but all I get is Loading and nothing else. I couldn’t find any help at the website.

Nicely done.

What is the best way to get Captain’s Chair to run under Win7? Is there any way to download the videos above to your pc and view offline?

I love that you can actually climb up the Jeffries Tube!!

Good grief, if I see “no bloody A, B, C, or D” one more time I’m going to gouge my eyes out. That stopped being clever a long time ago. Let it rest.

@Ted C – Well, Star Trek is a nearly 50-year-old franchise, and it hasn’t “stopped being clever” yet. So, I’ll stick with using Star Trek references to talk about Star Trek stuff on my Star Trek website, thank you very much.

I’m with Mr. Doohan. The Jeffrey’s tube (and Sickbay, lair of my favorite character) were highlights.

This was absolutely amazing. My childhood fantasy of visiting the TOS set has been fufilled! Wouldnt it be amazing if they could crop together the whole ship, like the coridors, engineering and bridge into one continuos tour, being able to ride the turbo lift and all…and filling in the gaps with CG….like CG ceilings and extra sets not yet constructed in real life…like the mess hall, arboretum and shuttle bay.

Star Trek Continues is about to do another crowd sourcing fundraiser. Help, if you can!

I got to visit these sets in person last year and the year before at the last two “Farragut Fests”. Of course, Engineering wasn’t even a twinkle in the eye then, but they had just completed Auxilliary Control ( as featured in “The Doomsday Machine” and “The Way To Eden” ). I was mostly drawn to the Bridge ( although probably unlike most fans, I didn’t spend a lot of my time in the Captain’s chair, but rather at the other Bridge stations ). It was a childhood dream come true just to sit there, face away from the missing sections and allow myself to dream that I was really on a Starship. Hope they will hold open houses again someday.

BTW, did anyone else notice that Captain Kirk ended up with Jeannie’s bottle next to his bed ( next to the Saurian Brandy decanter )? Guess he must have found her after Major Nelson passed away ( well, they are BOTH astronauts, after all ).

5.2.1 General considerations

The speed of Enterprise NX-01

To deal with maps and distances regarding the starship Enterprise, we first have to nail down its maximum speed, which will be, judging from the already aired episodes, apparently far more often and regularly used than the maximum speeds of the Starfleet vessels to come, what is, from a production-wise point of view, no surprise given that every speed lower than this (already quite low) warp factor would make the travels shown and distances bridged even more unbelievable.

However, the actual question regarding Enterprise's speed is - how fast is warp 4.5 and warp 5, respectively, in this series? Of course, we can ask this question for every series and every movie - given that the writers prefer to use "plot drive", i.e. make warp speeds as fast as needed in the respective episodes, anyway. However, it remains a fact that certain warp scales and warp formulas have been derived, stated in background documentations like "The Making of Star Trek" and the ST:TNG TM. It is true that this stuff can be only regarded as "semi-canon" at best, as non of the formulae have been ever directly mentioned on screen, however, at least the formula from the latter documentation has been obviously used in the post-TOS Trek series TNG, DS9 and VOY, given that we can reproduce many of the figures given in dialoge (like "it will take us x hours at warp y to reach z"). As mentioned in chapter 1.2, the post-TOS warp formula that fits best the graph given in the ST:TNG TM is

v/c(w)=w (10/3) +(10-w) (-11/3)

a funcion converging against v/c(10)=infinity (that's what we call a "vertical asymptote") as the theoretical maximum warp speed. TOS, however, did not seem to use any consistent warp scale. Nevertheless, the mentioned "Making of" book establishes the much simpler formula

for speeds in the Original Series, a formula that has been adapted by most of the fandom literature since the 1960s.

Given this situation, there are three possibilities regarding Enterprise's "actual" speed (in multiples of the light speed rather than a obscure warp factor)

it is calculated according to the TOS scale

it is calculated according to the TNG scale

it is calculated according to yet another scale

If we consider "Trek explanations" for the different warp scales, we quickly realize that possibility 2 makes no sense. The TNG scale is, as noted, much more complex than the TOS scale, which does not feature any asymptotes but only a simple exponential increase. It has therefore been suggested that in the 100 years between the two scales, the understanding of warp physics has been deepened, and thus the scale was refined according to the new insights. Now obviously it would make no sense that a century before TOS the TNG scale was already in use, while it was abandoned during the times of Captain Kirk only to be reintroduced in the 24th century. Given that possibility three isn't an option either, as this scale, no matter how it looks like, would need to produce slower speeds than the TOS scale anyway, one has to come to the conclusion that the formula from "Making of Star Trek" would indeed fit best in the 22nd century.

Unfortunately, technical consultant Andre Bormanis suggested the use of the TNG scale in "Enterprise", as the producers and writers are - of course - very interested in making the ship as fast as possible, even if it means to disrupt the scientific credibility of the show, sadly. However, as we will see, at least the pilot does not concur with his statements, but surprisingly supports above mentioned conclusion.

Indeed, we have two points of evidence supporting the TOS scale which are actually mentioned in the pilot and are therefore canon. By the way, I ignore Zefram Cochrane's statement in this episode of the new warp speeds being "a hundred times faster" here, as speeds of 800 to 1,000c (given that background sources mention a top speed of warp 2 for the other Star Fleet ships, and "Fortunate Son" confirms this with a top speed of warp 1.8 for the there featured cargo ship) clearly contradict the lower (!) travel speeds of Kirk's Enterprise, as they are almost in range of 24th century top travel speeds.

1) "Neptune and back in six minutes"

This is mentioned right in the first minutes of "Broken Bow", in the shuttle pod inspection scene. From the dialogue we know that this destination can be reached at said time (supposedly from Earth, as they are near Earth at that time, and it would make no sense for a human to give such a figure thinking in other than geocentric terms) at warp 4.5, the speed finally applied in the two-parter. If we do the math - bridging the 4,497,000,000 km between Earth and Neptune in 6min/2=3min=180s - we get a speed of app. 24,983,333 km/s, what equals roughly 83c. TOS warp 4.5 equals, according to the formula, 91.125c, what is a rough match given that the writers (or whoever came up with these figures) may have worked with less accurate values, while TNG warp 4.5 = 150c is certainly not within the tolerance range anymore.

2) "Thirty million kilometers per second"

Even more convincing than above - slightly vague - evidence is the scene in which Enterprise actually jumps to warp 4.5 for the first time, with the warp factor slowly increasing and Captain Archer - as one of the very few times in Trek - actually mentions a direct speed figure which can be associated with a warp factor. Evidently, some time after Enterprise has passed warp 4.4 (the last warp factor to be mentioned in this scene, though we know they're heading for 4.5), Archer mentions that they're travelling at 30,000,000 km/s, that is, without any calculations, about 100c. Using the above pointed out values, this is again a rough match with TOS warp 4.5 (100c would be warp 4.64), while TNG warp 4.5 are nowhere near this value (otherwise it would be an error of 50%!).

Now, while it is certainly clear now that the "Enterprise" writers and/or technical consultants were using the TOS scale for the figures in the pilot, statements like that of Andre Bormanis (made some time afterwards) and other - though not that clear and conclusive - proves in following episodes seem to hint a change of mind regarding the scale to be used in the show. As I stated, it makes no sense to apply a scale that apparently won't be introduced before two centuries in the future, and we also shouldn't forget that Enterprise has to remain, by all means, considerably slower than Kirk's Enterprise, let alone the high warp starships to come, in order to avoid problems with species, territories and phenomena which then "should be known" according to the speeds and thus distances Enterprise can travel, but clearly aren't known until the 23rd or 24th century given that those things have been mentioned as "first time occurrences" there. The "Enterprise" writers are walking a thin line here, pursuing "plot drive" episodes as in the past (already proven by the pilot, as we will see) yet having close restrictions when it comes to maintain the inter-series continuity in this especially demanding case of a prequel series, i.e. a series predating events of 600 episodes and 10 feature films.

The operation range of Enterprise NX-01

But let's take a closer look at how imminent this danger of "being too fast for credibility" is. If we take a look at the official map of the Galactic neighbourhood as it looks like in the 24th century (in the Star Trek universe, anyway), and discard the Klingons as first contact with them (to be dealt with in section 5.2.2), and a short trip to their home world, is the topic of the pilot, we have three major players - the Cardassians (and Bajorans), the Ferengi and the Romulans - that shouldn't be known by Enterprise by now. While we may neglect the case of the Romulans for the moment as we know that Earth will make First Contact with them a few years after 2151, clearly putting them in the ultimate operation range of Enterprise and the other warp 5 starships to come, we know for sure that Cardassians, Bajorans and especially Ferengi (given that we saw first contact with them in early TNG) are races not to be encountered in the 22nd century.

Interestingly we can reduce this three issues to one given that DS9 suggested - on screen as well as in documentations like the ST:DS9 TM - that all three territories are located in the same region of space, separated by only a few (in the case of Cardassia-Bajor) or a few dozen (in the case of Bajor-Ferenginar) light years. We then have to only consider the distance of Earth to this region in the Alpha Quadrant. As we know, this has been a hot topic for years as there have been no definite figures, but only vague assumptions, but we know for sure that it can't be much more than a hundred light years (let alone the distance for half of the territory of the Federation, assuming that Earth is close to the the center, that would work out with 4000+ light years!) given that trips from DS9 to Earth, even if we assume high warp travels in all cases, only took a few days up to two weeks at best. Indeed, Rick Sternbach's ST:DS9 TM gives merely 50.3 light years as the distance of Bajor to the "inner perimeter of the Federation" and the "core worlds of the Federation", respectively, what is, of course, a loop hole leaving the ultimate distance Bajor-Earth still vague. In a recent interview, Sternbach assumed that this "inner sphere" would have a radius of only 20 light years, what results in about 70 light years distance.

But is this really an issue? As the crew of Enterprise is "exploring", i.e. following every trace of unknown life or an inhabited planet it can spot, we may assume that they do not travel as "straight-lined", into one direction, as the ships in later series, whose tasks included directed survey, diplomatic missions and cargo / personal transport missions to a higher degree. At (TOS) warp 5, they theoretically could travel 72 light years per year, if we deduce at least 26 missions 3 days (a purely arbitrary assumption) - not too much if we take into account the "zig zag route". However, already "Civilization" established that Enterprise travelled 78 light years in less than 3 1/2 months (the first on screen lines that seems to directly support the in this case rather inconvenient TNG scale - given that this equals about 271c = TNG warp 5.3 -, with a possible loophole - subspace "lanes" - to be introduced later). Even with my own assumption of altogether 120 light years as the distance Earth-Bajor (a compromise between the extraordinarily short travel times in DS9 and a "reasonable" distance) there is (literally) little space left for these three major players of the 24th century to remain undiscovered (of course, this is even more a problem for TOS and Kirk's Enterprise, though we cannot be sure if Cardassians and Bajorans weren't known at that time). At least for the Ferengi, which strictly must remain undiscovered until 2364, there is a partial explanation: a different distribution of power in the Alpha Quadrant in the 22nd and 23rd century could have made their relatively small territory unreachable for Earth / Federation ships up to a later date, for example, if the Cardassian Union completely surrounded their space at that time. This solution is hinted at in the Map of Local Space, though another one would be the "vastness of space" per se and the fact that the voyages of Kirk's Enterprise - and presumably those of Archer's Enterprise as well - focused on the Beta Quadrant and the there residing powers of the Klingon and (soon) Romulan Empire.

A final point we have to consider is the popular question - if Enterprise only explores the supposedly well-known Galactic neighbourhood of a few dozen light years around Earth (and, as we have seen, is also only "allowed" to survey these region as everything farther away would lead to serious continuity problems), why can they discover "strange new worlds and civilizations" that are also new to us at all? Shouldn't they encounter only species and planets well-known in the 23rd and 24th century, and therefore well-known to us, while the Enterprise writers, which of course have to come up with something new and unknown up to now, exactly aim at the opposite? Now while it is not logical, if we think about it, the answer is - surprisingly - no. As Star Trek's goal was always the exploration of the unknown and the farthest reaches of deep space, and the technology was depicted as considerably more advanced in the 23rd and 24 centuries than it is in "Enterprise", our own "doorstep", the "interstellar backyard" of Earth is still the most unknown region of all! Of course we have Andorians and Vulcans and other species here, important players in TOS, and, rightfully so, in "Enterprise" as well; yet what do we actually know about the other planets and species here, in this (in the Trek Galaxy) supposedly densely populated area of space? This "proximity paradox" actually makes the entire series per se possible - to explore the unknown of Earth near space (what we will regard as "Earth near" from the view of the 24th century, anyway) for the crew and the viewer without overstraining continuity and credibility too much.

Still, the point of the maximum operation range of Enterprise, and the potential conflicts with (clearly) later discoveries and missions, remains unsolved up to now. While the producers may be aware enough of the issue to prevent more severe contradictions, in the end "suspending disbelief" may be the only way to buy the deep space exploration of Enterprise in the years to come.

5.2.2 The Qo'noS and "Rigel" issues

Unfortunately, it is (already) the pilot that seemingly disrupts the hope for scientific credibility and continuity in terms of Cartography in the new series. The entire mission of bringing back the Klingon pilot to his homeworld, as depicted in "Broken Bow", becomes a bit unbelievable and certainly does not concur with the "vastness of space" and the "deficiency and primitiveness of technology" that is propagated by the producers and the episode itself.

"Four days there, four days back"

However, this special case seems to be not only very unlikely in terms of interstellar politics (and as we see it wouldn't be the first time we have an inconsistency in this field), but also questionable in terms of science and technology. Using the speed figures given in the very same episode (and examined above), we can proof that - without further explanations - this whole scenario is not just unlikely, but actually impossible in this regard! 4 days at warp 4.5 - that works out to be 0.998 ly if using the TOS scale (and even with the TNG scale it's merely 1.6 light years), i.e. closer than the closest star to Earth, Proxima Centauri, which is 4.4 ly away. A very fine example for plot drive, isn't it? ;)

Obviously it won't be easy to explain away this major science blooper, yet there are some intriguing possibilities I would like to introduce here. Before we examine them, however, we have to consider the "Why?". Nothing, absolutely nothing in the story requires a journey of merely 4 days; the Klingon is physically stable, the crew must be very used to long journeys (given that none of them has travelled faster than warp 2 before), and we the viewers are used to Star Trek's narrative technique of cutting unnecessary screen time by showing an exterior shot and explaining passing time via log entries of the Captain. Now there are several log sequences over the course of the pilot which could have been used to make the same 90 minutes of real time to 4 weeks (instead of 4 days) narrative time. So what is it then? Ignorance? A major screw-up? I thought so for a long time, but perhaps not entirely. Because thinking about it, it's surprisingly not "Enterprise" that introduced this problem with Qo'noS distance, and I can very well imagine that the "Enterprise" writers relied on that earlier depiction, trying to make it more credible by being consistent to it. I'm talking about the events of "Star Trek VI", where the Earth and the whole Klingon Empire - Rura Pente, Kithomer and Q'onoS - seem to be extremely close given that the USS Enterprise, and later the USS Excelsior need days, if not less than a day, to travel from Earth to these locations. Even with the possibilities of the 23rd century, how can a Excelsior class vessel travel from the edge of the Alpha Quadrant (as mentioned by Captain Sulu) to Camp Khitomer on the same day? Obviously all these locations are all very close to Earth - if not regarding distance, then definitely regarding travel time (as we will see, these two measures are not necessarily proportional, as the standard warp calculation would suggest).

No matter how far Qo'noS is, it's obviously farther away from Earth than Alpha Centauri... so we can actually only discard the four days and pretend that Archer (and the others that mentioned such a short travel time) said something different. However, there is one very elegant explanation for this and similar cases, with that we can - amazingly - keep the hapless four days and still put Qo'noS at some reasonable distance to Earth, without making Enterprise faster than Voyager and Enterprise-E combined. This solution is based on a premise first mentioned in the noncanon fandom literature of the 1970s and 1980s, which is also hinted on in the semi-canon ST:TNG TM. There, you can see the warp chart and the warp / multiples of light speed coherences mentioned earlier, however, with the additional note: "the actual values depend on interstellar conditions, i.e. gaseous density, electrical and magnetic fields and subspace fluctuations". This little explanation gives us a lot of possibilities to solve a lot of inconsistencies and problems that have occurred over the years, but in this case, where the standard explanation is just impossible, it is urgent. So how does it work? If warp factors are, in terms of their light speed equivalents, not absolute, but only relative figures, depending on the local properties of space and subspace, the multiples given are only minimum / average values. To express the difference of these "idealized figures" and the actual values reached in different regions of the Galaxy, the fandom literature (such as "Star Trek Maps" by Geoffrey Mandel) extended the warp formula to

v/c(w)=c 3 * X

with X being the Cochrane factor which expresses exactly the mentioned forces that boost warp and make a starship, travelling with the same warp factor (and thus investing the same amount of energy) one time much more faster than the other. If we take into account that the distribution of the properties associated with the Cochrane factor in space are not necessarily equal or random, we can hypothesize that there are certain "lanes" in space which differ from the rest by extremely high Cochrane factors. Whatever fictitious natural phenomenon is the reason for them (e.g. the "subspace currents" mentioned in [VOY] Displaced), in these narrow areas of Cochrane factor bursts a starship would travel some hundred times faster than outside, while, as an important aspect, the ship will - contrast to wormholes and similar phenomena which will even push forward a ship at low impulse with mentioned speeds - still need to travel at a considerably high warp speed to make the boosting effect truly effective. As you can imagine, this way much can be explained in terms of the "Star Trek VI" and "Broken Bow" issue, while it does not necessarily contradict the fact that there possibly already have been pre-Enterprise starships travelling at warp in the direction of Qo'noS without ever reaching it, given that they only travelled with warp 2 maximum (if you multiply warp 2 and warp 4.5 with a constant X, the proportionality factor will still remain the same).

Another point that supports the "Cochrane factor" explanation: you have to know where these regions of Cochrane factor bursts are in order to take advantage of them. In case of "Broken Bow" this shows the obscure "Vulcan star charts" (what for does humanity - having examined space for 4000 years - need star charts of the Galactic neighbourhood of a few dozen light years?) in a whole new light. What if these star charts do not only show the positions of stars, but also the network of temporarily or permanently stable regions of ultra-high warp speeds, revealing the Cochrane factors in the different regions in space, thus showing the fastest way to Qo'noS, which can be indeed travelled within 4 days, while you would need 40 days or longer to reach it if you would travel a straight line to the Klingon homeworld? It's not illogical at all - just think of route planning and how you will reach your destination faster using highways than using the direct way via smaller roads, while in the latter case the distance might be actually smaller than in the first case. In both cases, time and distance are two completely different aspects, as the possible maximum speeds considerably differ. On planet Earth, you use your street atlas to find out which streets you can use best to reach your goal in the shortest amount of time; in case of interstellar travel, you will probably need similar charts to plot your course.

uss enterprise star trek map

Of course, with this explanation Qo'noS might be located anywhere, yet we generally have to make a few restrictions regarding the power of "Cochrane factor bursts". To my mind travels like the one of Kirk's Enterprise in Star Trek V to the center of the Galaxy (26,000 ly) in mere days are still errors. As pointed out above, you have to take into consideration: you'd probably have to chart the whole distance of a potential lane before you could use it, thus forbidding true exploration at incredible speeds (and, the other way round, a quick voyage home for Voyager in the 24th century). Only on pre-explored, well-known and often used routes (like the ones between Earth and Qo'noS, and, in the same vein, perhaps Earth and Bajor as well; a lane which wouldn't have been been charted before the 23rd or 24th century for obvious reasons), this advantage could be used. Otherwise, the possibilities would be just too far reaching, and make the lanes too important to keep them credible, given that they were never mentioned (fortunately their nature does not necessarily associate a visual phenomenon with them, as it would be the case with wormholes or subspace shortcuts) nor their effect shown (i.e. by constant travels of starships across the Galaxy). However, in all cases in which we just need boost by a factor of ten or one hundred for a anyway quite short distance, I do think this "plot device" is both useful and feasible. However, before we come to final guesses how far the Klingon homeworld might be away from Earth, another issue, that is raised in the course of the mission, has to be considered, as it is directly associated with this.

"Rigel" vs. Rigel

Even with the Cochrane factor explanation, it would be a bit too much a rationalization to allow any starship, at any time, to bridge more than 773 ly (+X ly, given that Qo'noS is not necessarily on route) within 4 days (I know this happened in TOS, yet this was a major screw-up); and "Broken Bow" does not support this at all anyway given that the star is merely 15 ly away from a position Enterprise has reached from Earth within mere hours of flight. Additionally, it seems that the writers were unaware of the true meaning of Rigel as a real star anyway, as this is not only not mentioned, but contradicted in the dialogue. It seems they just intended to add another TOS reference to their script. Fortunately, I might add, because exactly this additional error makes the whole Rigel issue a non-issue, and - unintentionally, I'm inclined to believe - solves the whole problem Rigel, as a much too far away star whose properties (super giant with little heavy metal abundance and short life span) would never allow life-capable planets, has posed in all Trek series it was mentioned. The important point is - in the respective scene, "Rigel" is mentioned together with a few other star locations (among them Tholia) - as names directly extracted from a Klingon database. How could the Klingons, which had no contact to Earth up to then, possibly have the same Arabic name for the same star? Not at all, is the only answer. Obviously, "Rigel" has to be a Klingon homophone denoting a different star than our Rigel (I'm therefore using quotation marks for the Klingon Rigel, as it is surely written different - even if the subtitles in a later scene show Rigel written in our way), completely ruling out the assumption that the "Rigel" in the pilot is our real star Rigel, and, as I pointed out, also explaining the frequent later reference to "Rigel" in TOS, TNG and DS9 as a common, not too far planetary system, assuming that the alien name, probably very common in the already existing interstellar community (given that T'Pol very well knew what and where "Rigel" is), was kept by humans as one of the few instances where Earth was influenced by outer influences and not vice versa. It all makes a lot more sense this way. Just to mention two major cases: the journey of Pike and his crew back from "Rigel" to Vega (a star very close to Earth) in order to treat the wounded in the very first TOS pilot "The Cage" - up to now we had to believe that he travelled almost 800 light years within a few weeks and passed Earth in order to reach another colony! And we have the "Rigellians", obviously native to the "Rigel" system, as an important Federation species akin to the Vulcans and Romulans (with respective planetary systems not too far away from Earth) - the rationalization up to now had to be that the Rigellians colonized the Rigel system some time ago, have a very resistant physiology, are an "outsider" species in the Federation family etc.

Still, it is not necessary, nor reasonable, to make this revision in all cases Rigel was mentioned and / or played an important role. Indeed the Rigel problem is solved best by assuming that both "Rigels" were used in Trek. For example, in [TOS] Mudd's Women, Kirk did explicitly mention that the planet visited there (Rigel XII) is at the edge of the Federation, only rarely visited by starships, and after all, his ship, running short in Dilithium supplies, was threatened to fall out of orbit - not very credible if this Rigel was in the major system with lots of colonies, the home world of the Rigellians etc. that was mentioned in other cases. So we can safely assume that this "Rigel" was our Rigel. If we think about it, this way the scientific problems are solved as well - putting apparently close, busy M class worlds in the "Rigel" system and all others in the (our) Rigel system - explaining how there can be so many inhabitable planets (eight up to now, mentioned in more than a dozen episodes) in one planetary system.

Back to Qo'noS

Given that we have disclosed "Rigel" to be an unknown planetary system 15+x light years away from Earth, Qo'noS might be anywhere between this distance and about 50 light years as "acceptable" distance I would have chosen as a "safe minimum" before "Broken Bow" (cf. operation range chart ) . As we have found out, no matter what the actual distance is, only with daring (yet not conflicting with on screen canon) auxialiary constructs like the "subspace lanes" (then causing Cochrane factor increases between 1500 to 5000 percent) we will be able to explain the first voyage of Enterprise in a reasonably scientific way anyway.

Interestingly, such a short distance may not contradict the fact that the later series (TNG and DS9) seemingly put the Klingon homeworld, and the whole Klingon Empire, considerably farther away, so that e.g. reinforcements always needed a longer time (as seen in [DS9] The Way of the Warrior and [DS9] The Sacrifice of Angels). If we remember, Star Trek VI, which ironically was the first instance which demanded this extremely short travel time between Earth and Qo'noS, mentioned an evacuation and relocation of the Klingons living on this planet after the Praxis incident that allegedly made the homeworld uninhabitable within 50 years. Therefore, the Qo'noS we're talking about in Enterprise and the TOS feature films may be a completely different one than the planet we have seen in TNG and DS9. Even when acknowledging the fact that much can change within 200 years, on screen comparisons of the sky and planet color seem to support this idea, as seen in the following pictures.

The Starship Enterprise NCC 1701

Any true fan of Star Trek will tell you the USS Enterprise is no mere starship — it’s a character in its own right. They might even know that several ships, all bearing the proud name, have carried captains and crews on their long and dangerous missions to seek out new life and civilizations in the farthest reaches of the galaxy.

But only the most dedicated of this group, those who proudly call themselves Trekkers or Trekkies, have a deep knowledge of the ship in all its many iterations — practically a different Enterprise for each TV series and movie, including the latest big-screen version, Star Trek Into Darkness .

There’s Captain Kirk’s dependable space cruiser, Captain Picard’s luxury liner, and the bigger craft seen in the alternate-reality of the JJ Abrams’ movies. (There are also lesser known Enterprises: The forgotten middle-year ships, the three engined one, the evil battle cruiser, and the never-even-officially-existed fan versions.) How on earth — or, in space — to keep track of them all? Easy: TIME presents a brief history of the Starships Enterprise.

6 Queer Fantasy and Science Fiction Novels to Read Right Now

A wannabe blue shirt officer’s guide to the map of the galaxy in ‘star trek’.

The cast of 'Star Trek: Picard' Season 3

No matter the fictional universe— be it fantasy or sci-fi or somewhere in between (looking at you, space operas)—I’ve always found maps and cartography one of the most fascinating parts of worldbuilding. There’s something about actually seeing how an author imagines the setting of their story that immediately grounds it in the realm of possibility, and helps immerse viewers in the worlds in which these stories unfold.

Sure, it’s somehow easier when the map consists of a single continent, kingdom, or city on Earth or any other Earth-like location. Bringing the action up into space definitely makes everything a tad more complicated—and a whole lot more fascinating.

And now that the third season of Star Trek: Picard is in full swing , there’s no better time to refresh our collective memory on the “astrogeography” the crews of the USS Enterprise explore.

The USS Enterprise from 'Star Trek'

Star Trek and maps

The decades that have passed since Star Trek first premiered on television screens have made it possible for the saga to acquire beautifully complex and detailed lore on pretty much everything related to it—including the planets that make up the United Federation of Planets, and the powers that border it, like the infamous Klingon Empire.

There have actually been several maps made for Star Trek and its locations over the years, as it reads on The Map Room blog . “While original series canon assigned aliens to known nearby stars, and the shows occasionally used real locations, episode writers did not start with a map and generally did not take spatial relationships into consideration, which no doubt has made the belated mapping process a bit more challenging,” The Map Room blog continues, explaining how creating a comprehensive map of the Star Trek galaxy might be easier said than done.

Still, while none of the maps ever put to print or screen have ever been accepted as official canon, most of them have the major power players of the galaxy in more or less the same location. This means we can reasonably assume that this is the actual position in which they can be found in-universe.

The galaxy quadrants

Most of the action in the Star Trek canon takes place within our galaxy, the Milky Way, which has been divided into its famous four primary quadrants, each named after a letter in the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta.

The Alpha and Beta quadrants are the ones that are better known, even in-universe, and that house many of the major players we see throughout the various series—the United Federation of Planets chiefest of all. The Federation has a strong foothold in both quadrants, spanning Alpha and Beta from their shared border outwards.

According to Memory Alpha , the official Star Trek fan wiki, the Alpha quadrant contains two all-important planets that we all know very well: Earth, from which a good majority of the characters in Star Trek canon hail; and Vulcan, the homeworld of the Vulcans and especially of Spock. This quadrant also contains the Cardassian Union, the Ferengi Alliance, and the Breen Confederacy—among other smaller factions—whose representatives make an appearance in the canon, particularly in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine .

Leonard Nimoy as Spock in 'Star Trek'

The Beta quadrant includes a couple of relatively smaller players like the Nyberrite Alliance and the Tholian Assembly, and then the major forces of the Romulan Star Empire and the infamous Klingon Empire—who both have their respective homeworlds, Romulus and Qo’noS, in this quadrant.

In contrast to the Alpha and Beta quadrants, the Gamma and Delta quadrants are considerably less well-known and less visited—which makes sense, considering the notable distances that separate them from the other areas of the galaxy, which would require years to bridge even at warp speed. Their reputation also isn’t as stellar as the areas in Federation space.

Still, they are of course mentioned time and again in the canon, as are the planets and people located within them. The Delta quadrant, for example, is the place of origin of the infamous Borg Collective, made up of the terrible Borg cyborgs.

Service history and disposition

Enterprise McKinley

Captain Picard with Tasha Yar approaching the newly completed USS Enterprise -D.

Construction

On 4 October 2363 , the Enterprise was commissioned. ( TNG reference : On Board the USS Enterprise )

The ship was built in the Sol system at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards in orbit over Mars ; the vessel's warp drive was designed by Dr Leah Brahms with Commander Orfil Quinteros supervising the overall construction. While under construction, the starship's warp nacelle was the site of multiple murders which were not discovered until 2370 . ( TNG episodes : " Booby Trap ", " 11001001 ", " Galaxy's Child ", " Eye of the Beholder "; TNG video game : Echoes from the Past )

The Enterprise transferred to Earth Station McKinley for final systems completion and shakedown. On 23 February 2364 ( stardate 41153.7) Captain Jean-Luc Picard took command of the ship at the order of Rear Admiral Norah Satie . ( TNG episode : " All Good Things... ", TNG reference : On Board the USS Enterprise )

2364 service history

Jellys

The Enterprise before the Farpoint alien and its partner.

Following her 2364 launch, the Enterprise proceeded via Starbase 52 to Farpoint Station to pick up the rest of the crew . En-route, the omnipotent being Q made first contact with the vessel and challenged the crew to prove their worth in being so deep into space by solving the mystery of Farpoint, the crew succeeded in discovering the station was in fact an alien lifeform , which they promptly freed. ( TNG episode : " Encounter at Farpoint "; TNG novel : Reunion )

Just as the Enterprise departed, a Borg sphere arrived through a temporal gateway from 2376 during the Battle of Unimatrix 01 . The sphere prepared to attack, but was destroyed by the newly-arrived USS Premonition . The Premonition departed immediately to prevent further damage to the timeline. Captain Picard remembered this encounter for 12 years. ( TNG video game : Armada )

Following the Farpoint incident, the Enterprise embarked on its mission to explore strange new worlds and seek out new life and new civilizations. During its first year, the Enterprise was transported a billion light years from the Milky Way Galaxy by an alien known as the Traveler . ( TNG episode : " Where No One Has Gone Before ")

Later that year, the Enterprise made official first contact with the Ferengi , and later was hijacked by a group of Bynars who took the starship to their homeworld to use the starship’s large computer core to backup their planetary computer. ( TNG episodes : " The Last Outpost ", " 11001001 ")

Gravimetric pulse

A gravimetric pulse hits the Enterprise .

On stardate 41590.8, the Enterprise visited Tigan , under the invitation of Chancellor Lomac , unfortunately Lomac was knocked from power shortly after the Enterprise arrived and the new administration was less happy to have the Federation visit the planet so fired a gravimetric pulse at the Enterprise . The pulse generated a gravimetric wave which pushed the Enterprise across the galaxy at high velocities. The Enterprise was only able to break free and return to Tigan to rescue its away team by using the slingshot effect to jump back in time and re-enter orbit before they could be fired on. ( TNG comic : " History Lesson ")

Before the end of the year, the Enterprise returned to Earth to thwart an alien conspiracy to take control of Starfleet HQ . ( TNG episode : " Conspiracy ")

Following this successful mission, the Enterprise made its way to the Romulan Neutral Zone to investigate the destruction of several Federation outposts . Initially, their destruction was assumed to be the work of the Romulans , however after making contact with the Romulans for the first time in 53 years , they discovered both sides installations had been attacked. These incidents were later found to be the work of the Borg Collective . ( TNG episodes : " The Neutral Zone ", " Q Who "; TNG comic : " Operation Assimilation ")

2365 service history

Maltese asteroid belt

The Enterprise over The Armada.

On stardate 42317.1 , the Enterprise was sent to The Armada , on the Maltese asteroid belt , to investigate a series of crop failures which threatened the food supply to the surrounding sector. ( TNG comic : " Space Seeds ")

Later, the Enterprise transported Ambassador Fenton Lewis to the planet Lorca , to stop a Ferengi takeover of the planet. An away team led by Captain Picard was lost, and a second one, led by Commander William T. Riker , was sent down to the planet. Lieutenant Geordi La Forge was placed in command of the Enterprise . Both away teams were successful in their missions and the Ferengi left the planet. ( TNG novel : Masks )

Also in this year, the Enterprise , with the USS Yamato , discovered the Iconian homeworld and destroyed an Iconian Gateway to prevent the technology from falling into the hands of the Romulans. ( TNG episode : " Contagion ")

Borg cube

A Borg Cube attacking the Enterprise .

However, by far the most notable event of the year was official first contact with the Borg , courtesy of Q. ( TNG episode : " Q Who ")

2366 service history

Towards the end of 2366 , the Borg returned to Federation space and the Enterprise was dispatched to try and hold off their vessel while Starfleet mustered its forces at Wolf 359 . In an apparent stroke of fortune, the Borg seemed fixated in pursuing the Enterprise so that they might achieve their goal of assimilating Captain Picard. For some time the Enterprise was able to hide from the Borg in the Paulson Nebula , however the Borg eventually drove the ship out using magnetometric guided charges . Soon there after, the Borg succeeded in capturing Picard and assimilating him, giving him the designation Locutus .

The crew of the Enterprise attempted to stop the Borg by modifying their starship's deflector dish to fire a high energy pulse. Unfortunately, Picard was aware of this plan and the Borg had already adapted. As the Enterprise fell behind, the cube (endowed with Picard's knowledge of Starfleet defenses) proceeded to Earth, easily defeating the fleet of thirty-nine Starfleet vessels awaiting them.

The Enterprise was eventually able to catch up with the cube and rescue Picard. Using his link to the Collective, Data was able to implant the command 'sleep' into the Borg drones on the ship causing them to regenerate en masse, in turn causing the cube to self destruct over Earth . ( TNG episode : " The Best of Both Worlds ")

2367 service history

Earth station mckinley

The Enterprise under going repairs after Wolf 359.

Following the battles with the Borg, the Enterprise returned to Earth Station McKinley for refit and repairs while the crew took some much deserved shore leave in early 2367 . ( TNG episode : " Family ")

Trager

The Enterprise firing on the CDS Trager .

On stardate 44429.6 , following a brief engagement with the Cardassian ship CDS Trager , the Enterprise worked with the Gul of that ship, Akellen Macet , to track down a rogue Federation starship, the USS Phoenix , which had been attacking Cardassian vessels. ( TNG episode : " The Wounded ")

Later that year, on stardate 44614.6, while Dr. Leah Brahms visited the ship, the Enterprise became the temporary adopted mother of a space-borne lifeform. ( TNG episode : " Galaxy's Child ")

Towards the end of the year, the Enterprise led an armada of ships to create a tachyon detection grid to prevent cloaked Romulan ships delivering supplies to factions in the Klingon civil war . ( TNG episode : " Redemption ")

2368 service history

USS Enterprise-D adrift quantum filamet

Disabled after striking a quantum filament.

On stardate 45156.1 , the Enterprise collided with a quantum filament , resulting in severe damage and a loss of all power. Fortunately, the crew were able to restore power before antimatter containment was lost - which would have destroyed the ship. ( TNG episode : " Disaster ")

On stardate 45208.2, the crew of the Enterprise fell victim to a Ktarian mind controlling game and almost handed the ship over to Ktarian control. Fortunately, through the efforts of Lieutenant Commander Data , Ensign Robin Lefler and Wesley Crusher , the Ktarian plan was thwarted. ( TNG episode : " The Game ")

In mid-2368, the Enterprise was shortly captured by Romulans from the experimental warbird IRW Syrinx . The Romulans took the Enterprise to the quarantined world Hermeticus II , where the crew rediscovered the USS Independence , which was lost 30 years earlier . Hermeticus II was revealed being a starship inhabited by the Ambimorph , who saved the crew of the Enterprise and destroyed the Romulan ship. ( TNG novel : The Romulan Prize )

On stardate 45494.2, the Satarrans also attempted to take control of the Enterprise with somewhat more success, using the Enterprise to destroy a Lysian destroyer before the crew of the Enterprise , whom the Satarran agent on board had induced a state of amnesia in, regained their memories and retook control of the ship. ( TNG episode : " Conundrum ")

Towards the end of the year, on stardate 45959.1, the Enterprise once more returned to Earth, to investigate the discovery of a duplicate head of Lieutenant Commander Data. ( TNG episode : " Time's Arrow ")

2369 service history

Early in the year 2369 , the Enterprise was charged with transporting Kommandant Ghud to trial on the planet Wyath . Due to strict rules in Wyath law on the timing of trials, Ghud had to arrive in a tight schedule, so when the shuttlecraft Goddard failed to make its rendezvous with the Enterprise , the starship had to continue onto Wyath regardless. Fortunately, Ghud volunteered his engineering expertise to help find the shuttle; devising a system which triangulated the sensors of the Enterprise , Starbase 172 and the sensor array on Wyath to pinpoint the unique materials the shuttle crew had in their possession - Worf 's baldric , Ro Laren 's earring and Geordi La Forge's VISOR . Upon detecting the shuttle, Commander Riker was dispatched in another shuttle to retrieve the away team, while the Enterprise continued on schedule for Wyath. ( TNG comic : " Light of the Day ")

The Enterprise alongside the Dyson sphere .

On stardate 46125.3, the Enterprise tracked a distress call from the USS Jenolen , to find the crashed ship on the outside of a Dyson sphere . There the crew rescued Captain Montgomery Scott , suspended in the transporter beam for the previous 75 years . ( TNG episode : " Relics ")

On stardate 46357.4, Edward Jellico temporarily took command of the Enterprise while Captain Picard conducted a covert mission to Celtris III . ( TNG episode : " Chain of Command ")

Docked at the new Federation station Deep Space Nine in 2369.

On stardate 46379.1, the Enterprise delivered crew and a complement of Danube -class runabouts to the newly re-christened starbase Deep Space 9 . Later that year on stardate 46578.4, the Enterprise returned to DS9. ( DS9 episode : " Emissary "; TNG episode : " Birthright ")

On stardate 46682.4 the Enterprise travelled to Arkaria to undergo a Baryon sweep in the Remmler Array . ( TNG episode : " Starship Mine ")

2370 service history

AFU007b

The Enterprise faces the Garidian Warbird Asiram .

On stardate 47111.1 , the Enterprise was sent to intercept a Garidian Scoutship , which was about to cross the Neutral Zone . The Enterprise arrived just in time to save a group of Garidian fugitives who were escaping the Garidian government and were pursued by the Garidian Warbird Asiram . Captain Picard answered their request for asylum, and convinced the Garidian captain named Pentara , who was the mother of one of the fugitives, to return to their territory.

Soon after that, the Enterprise received a distress call from Mertens Orbital Research Station orbiting Cymkoe IV . The Enterprise arrived in time to save the station from a power core breach and faced its attacker, a mysterious probe with would later be discovered as Chodak technology.

After the incident at Cymkoe IV, Admiral Reddreck ordered the Enterprise to Morassia to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a Federation scientist, Dr. Vi Hyunh-Foertsch . The crew managed to reveal illegal activities of one of the planet's inhabitants. Furthermore they managed to get a trace on the Garidian fugitives' trail for the Fifth Scroll , an ancient artifact that could change Garidian politics forever.

The Enterprise discovered the Fifth Scroll on Frigis , after discovering a colony of Garidian descendants of the Followers of the Lawgiver . Shortly after the Garidians left the Enterprise to return home with the artifact, a Romulan fleet entered Federation space, attacking several outposts and apparently heading towards the Z'Tarnis Nebula . The Enterprise encountered several Romulan warbirds and engaged at least one ship after responding to a distress call from the USS Ayers .

Starfleet Command ordered the Enterprise to investigate the Romulan invasion. The crew discovered that the Romulans were looking for an ancient Chodak weapon, known as the Unity Device , which they believed was hidden in the Z'Tarnis Nebula.

After the first wave of the Romulan invasion, another hostile force crossed the Neutral Zone , once more destroying Federation outposts. The Enterprise intercepted one of the alien ships and discovered that the Chodak were behind the second attack.

ArrivalUnity

The Enterprise arrives at the Unity Device .

First Contact with the Chodak was established on their former homeworld Allanor , where Captain Picard was able to locate the position of the Unity Device. The Enterprise arrived in the Z'Tarnis Nebula to make sure the ancient weapon would not fall into wrong hands. Soon after that, Captain Picard was able to send the Unity Device into another dimension. ( TNG video game : A Final Unity )

While on patrol, the Enterprise -D was contacted by Montgomery Scott aboard the Goddard , who requested access to their library computer. While aboard in guest quarters, Scott accessed logs from the original Enterprise crew, including Spock 's calculations for time travel aboard a B'rel -class Klingon bird-of-prey . After departing the Enterprise under false authorization, Scott's vessel, nicknamed the Bounty 2 utilized the Arhennius star to slingshot back in time, with the Enterprise following, where they discovered an alternate timeline , mistakenly caused by Scott when he rescued James T. Kirk from the USS Enterprise -B before he was drawn into the Nexus .

The Enterprise met the D'Zidran , commanded by that timeline's Tal who was advised by Guinan . The D'Zidran put out an Alliance fleet-wide alert and located Scott and Kirk aboard the Wisdom , under the watch of Supreme Arbiter of the Alliance Sarek . The Enterprise was able to avoid the threat of the Borg Collective, who now controlled much of the Alpha Quadrant , including the Sol system, and with the assistance of Guinan, determined that they needed to return Kirk to the Nexus. The Enterprise transported Kirk back moments before a fleet of Borg cubes destroyed the Enterprise , but the timeline corrected itself and everyone awoke back in the normal flow of space-time without knowledge of the events in the alternate timeline. ( ST novel : Engines of Destiny )

On stardate 47310.2. Enterprise issued a warp embargo throughout Starfleet and other governments, based on findings by Hekaran astrophysicists. This resulted in a local velocity limit of warp factor 5, bringing daily spacefaring and commute somewhat back to the 22nd century ; major starship redesigns were made, including the Intrepid -class vessels. For this reason and rifts generated in areas of space, "environmentally friendly" provisions were made. For example, the Enterprise-D , in the following year, before her loss, reduced power output while orbiting Amargosa . Internal shipboard lights were lowered or altogether deactivated, allowing solar light to shine through decks with the windows, reflected from the nearby observatory. ( TNG episode : " Force of Nature " TNG movie & novelization : Generations )

Ent-Ddecloak

The Enterprise de-cloaking in front of the IRW Terix .

On stardate 47457.1, the Enterprise was sent to the Devolin system to try and recovered the wreckage of the USS Pegasus before the Romulans succeed in achieving the same goal. Racing against the IRW Terix , the Enterprise located the Pegasus but was forced to use an illegal prototype interphasic cloaking device the Pegasus had been the test bed for to escape an asteroid the Enterprise had been trapped in. ( TNG episode : " The Pegasus ")

Strategy attack

The Enterprise under attack from the remote controlled starship.

On stardate 47630.1 the Enterprise was assigned to map the Bandor system which had recently fallen under Federation jurisdiction. In that remote location it was attacked by an unidentified hybrid starship , made from Federation, Romulan and Borg components. In the first attack, the ship took out the Enterprise's warp and impulse engines and reduced shields to twenty-four percent, as well as causing crew injuries, near fatal ones to Counsellor Deanna Troi . The attacker then departed for a short time. When it returned, Troi had recovered enough to warn the ship had no crew, it was remote controlled . With this knowledge, the crew were able to find a solution, creating an inter-receptive network blocking the subspace communications controlling the aggressor. Cut off from its controllers, the vessel self destructed . The Enterprise called in at a nearby Starbase following this incident. ( TNG comic : " Strategy ")

2371 service history

In 2371, the Enterprise was undergoing some refits at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards at the time that the USS Voyager was undergoing final construction. ( VOY episode : " Relativity ")

After the disappearance of Voyager , the Enterprise participated in the search for the missing Starfleet vessel in the Badlands . ( DS9 - The Maquis: Soldier of Peace - Issue 1 comic : " Vacation's Over ")

USS Enterprise-D evades the Duras sisters' Bird-of-Prey

Duras sisters attack.

On stardate 48650.1, the Enterprise -D met its end during a confrontation with a Klingon Bird-of-Prey under command of the Duras sisters. The sisters had previously captured Geordi La Forge and while under their captivity had Tolian Soran (a scientist they were working with) modify La Forge's VISOR to transmit a video stream to them. Upon his return to the Enterprise , they used this data to discover the Enterprise 's deflector shield frequencies and adjusted their disruptor frequencies accordingly to fire through the Enterprise's shields. While the Enterprise was able to destroy the bird of prey they were using, the Cha'Joh , the damage inflicted during the battle caused a warp core breach. The crew managed to evacuate to the saucer section and separate before the stardrive section exploded.

Enterprise crash

The Enterprise crashing into the atmosphere of Veridian III.

The shock wave created by that explosion did, however, knock the saucer off course, causing it to crash land on the planet Veridian III below. Most of the crew survived, but the Enterprise herself was not salvageable and a small group of Starfleet vessels arrived shortly after to retrieve the Enterprise's crew. ( TNG movie & novelization : Generations )

Much of the Enterprise -D's crew later transferred to the new Sovereign -class USS Enterprise -E . Morgan Bateson would reveal that the bridge science station and forward support struts have minor damage because they are from the wreckage of the Enterprise -D; the officer’s lounge table was also reclaimed from the Enterprise -D. Bateson had them installed, he said, because of these artifacts, the crew of the Enterprise -E would always know of the legacy of her predecessor. ( TNG novel : Ship of the Line )

2401 service history

By 2401 , The Enterprise-D saucer had been salvaged from Veridian III and was being restored at the Starfleet Museum in orbit of Athan Prime.

On Frontier day of that year, in response to the developing situation in orbit of Earth, the rebuilt Enterprise-D was pressed back into service by her old command crew, knowing that she would not be affected by the issues affecting the modern day fleet. Alternate timelines and realities.

In one alternate timeline , a Borg sphere sent from the future destroyed the Enterprise -D. As a result of the altered timeline, Tasha Yar did not give birth to Sela and Martok only rose to the position of captain. Fortunately, the USS Premonition went back in time as well, and destroyed the Sphere, restoring the original timeline. ( ST video game : Armada )

In another alternate timeline, following the disappearance of the USS Enterprise -C , relations between the Federation and the Klingon Empire deteriorated into war. The Enterprise -D became the first Federation Galaxy -class warship. In 2366, the Enterprise -C reappeared through a temporal rift and encountered the Enterprise -D. It soon became clear that the Enterprise -C's disappearance had lead to the creation of this timeline so the Enterprise -D laid down cover fire to protect the Enterprise -C from attacking K'vort class Bird-of-Prey as she returned. As the Enterprise -D was verging on destruction and taking heavy casualties, including William Riker, the Enterprise -C traveled back in time with the addition of Tasha Yar of the Enterprise -D. This Tasha was soon taken captive by Romulans and became the mother of the half Romulan Sela . ( TNG episodes : " Yesterday's Enterprise ", " Redemption "; WizKids module : Tactics )

In another alternate timeline, the Enterprise -D survived into 2378 . The majority of the Enterprise 's staff had moved on to other positions with many of the senior staff having been replaced by Soong-type androids . Captain Picard took the Enterprise into the Romulan Neutral Zone following the receipt of a message from the long missing Data. The ship and crew were led to Iconia, which had been colonized by the androids . In order to protect the innocents below, the Enterprise was forced to engage the IRW Haakona in orbit of the planet; however, a peaceful resolution was obtained when the Iconian gateway technology was surrendered to all powers in the Alpha Quadrant. ( TNG short story : " Brave New World ")

FutureEnterprise

The Enterprise -D of Q's alternate future.

In an alternative future created by Q, the Enterprise had undergone extensive refits including the addition of a third warp nacelle and several additional phaser cannons . The third warp nacelle enhanced the power and speed of the ship. with it being able to destroy a Klingon battle cruiser with several phaser hits. The vessel also had a cloaking device at this time. Her commanding officer was Captain Sam Lavelle , who retired in 2395 . ( TNG novelization : All Good Things... , CCG set: Alternate Universe , card: "Future Enterprise")

Future Enterprise -D unleashes on Klingons.

In one permutation of the mirror universe in which the Terran Empire survived into the 24th century, this timeline had its own version of the Enterprise , the ISS Enterprise -D , with a registry of ICC-1701-D. It was the flagship of the Imperial Starfleet and was under the command of Jean-Luc Picard from 2364 until at least 2367. ( TNG novel : Dark Mirror )

In an alternate reality visited by Lieutenant Worf in 2370, William T. Riker was the captain of the Enterprise -D as Jean-Luc Picard had been killed during the Borg Incursion of 2366-2367 . Worf was his first officer . This Enterprise was attacked by a Bajoran warship while it was investigating the quantum fissure which had caused Worf to begin switching places with his counterparts from other realities. The attack led to an energy surge in the subspace differential pulse which the Enterprise had been using to scan the fissure, resulting in the barriers between different realities breaking down and the incursion of approximately 285,000 versions of the Enterprise into the same reality.

Multiple Enterprise-Ds

Multiple Enterprise -Ds converge near a quantum fissure.

One of these Enterprise s came from a reality in which the Borg Collective had succeeded in conquering the Federation and much of the Alpha Quadrant by 2370. It was one of the last surviving ships and was likewise commanded by Riker. This version of Riker fired on the Curie as he did not want to return to his own reality. The Enterprise indigenous to that reality then fired on the Borg-infested Enterprise using minimal weapons. This began a chain reaction which resulted in its destruction due to the severe damage which it had suffered in its many engagements with the Borg. ( TNG episode : " Parallels ")

In another alternate reality, Jack Crusher was the captain of the Enterprise -D in 2370. His first officer was Commander Jean-Luc Picard, who was demoted following the destruction of the USS Stargazer in 2355 . Crusher's ex-wife Beverly Howard was the ship's chief medical officer .

In 2370, Crusher committed suicide after learning from Trelane that he was the only still living version of Jack Crusher in any universe. Picard succeeded him as captain and chose William T. Riker, who had recently been freed from a joint Romulan-Cardassian prison camp after eight years, as his first officer. ( TNG novel : Q-Squared )

In 2371, Commander Riker later revisited the crash site to head up a team to dismantle the remains of the ship, so that if and when the natives of Veridian IV ever achieved spaceflight and visited Veridian III, they would not discover the crashed starship. After a Romulan attack, Riker activated the saucer's auto-destruct sequence, leading to the ship's final destruction. While the blast totally obliterated the surrounding area, Riker decided that it would be less harmful for explorers from Veridian IV to find a huge crater rather than the remains of the Enterprise -D. Every starship enterprise saucer separation in star trek & why.

As seen in TNG, some versions of Star Trek's Enterprise can conduct a saucer separation to gain a tactical advantage or flee emergency situations.

  • Saucer separation was a tactical maneuver used in extreme circumstances to protect innocent lives on the USS Enterprise.
  • Only the USS Enterprise-D from Star Trek's prime timeline has conducted a saucer separation, despite early consideration in production.
  • The Kelvin timeline's USS Enterprise conducted a saucer separation in Star Trek Beyond, but it was too late to make a difference.

In extreme circumstances, Star Trek 's starship Enterprise can carry out a saucer separation for both tactical and emergency purposes. The Enterprise's first saucer separation maneuver was seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation pilot, "Encounter at Farpoint", and though used sparingly, it wouldn't be the last time that Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) gave such a command. While the TNG version of the starship Enterprise was the first to use the saucer separation, Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott (James Doohan) theorized a similar "nacelle removal" maneuver was possible in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "The Apple".

During a saucer separation, a full-evacuation of non-essential personnel would be conducted as the senior staff made their way to the battle bridge, located in the starship's drive section. Once preparations were complete, the docking clamps would retract, separating the saucer section from the ship's primary hull. The concept of a saucer separation in Star Trek had been under consideration since early production on the abandoned Star Trek: Planet of the Titans movie . However, to date, the USS Enterprise-D is the only ship from Star Trek 's prime timeline to conduct a saucer separation, but the Kelvin Timeline's USS Enterprise had similar abilities.

Only 5 Star Trek Movies Didn’t Destroy The Starship Enterprise

5 the enterprise-d separated to avoid q's forcefield, star trek: the next generation, season 1, episode 1, "encounter at farpoint".

After a less than cordial first meeting with Q (John de Lancie), the crew of the USS Enterprise-D attempted to outrun the cosmic trickster by fleeing his forcefield. Q's forcefield gave chase, which forced Picard to order a saucer separation to protect the innocent lives of the many civilians aboard the Enterprise . Picard put Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) in charge of the saucer section until the crisis was over. Despite trying to outrun Q from the Enterprise-D's stardrive section from the battle bridge, Picard and his senior staff soon found themselves in Q's courtroom.

After Q agrees to let Picard prove that human beings are not savages, the two halves of the starship Enterprise are reunited in orbit above the planet Deneb IV. The remainder of the Star Trek: The Next Generation cast are introduced at Farpoint Station, too. One of Picard's first orders to his number one, Commander William T. Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is to conduct a manual docking of the Enterprise's stardrive and saucer sections .

Saucer separation was planned to be a regular feature in Star Trek: The Next Generation , but was abandoned due to the costs involved, and the fact that the process of separating the Enterprise's saucer section slowed down the story.

4 Geordi Ordered A Saucer Separation Above Minos

Star trek: the next generation, season 1, episode 21, "the arsenal of freedom".

In Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1, episode 20, "Heart of Glory", two Klingon warriors plotted to hijack the Enterprise by conducting an illegal saucer section. They were foiled in their plans by Lt. Worf, who chose his Starfleet colleagues over his fellow Klingons. In the following episode, "The Arsenal of Freedom", the Enterprise did conduct a saucer separation, ordered by Lt. Geordi La Forge. Geordi was placed in temporary command of the Enterprise while Picard and Riker's away team were pinned down by an automated weapons system on the planet Minos .

The Enterprise's chief engineer, Lt. Commander Logan (Vyto Ruginis) objected to Geordi's plan to stay and rescue the away team, and tried to pull rank. Geordi stood his ground and reminded Logan that only Picard or Riker could relieve him of command. Later, when preparations for the saucer separation were underway, Geordi ordered Logan to take command of the saucer, and pilot it to Starbase 103. After Picard, Riker, and the away team were rescued, the Enterprise captain allowed Geordi to remain in command until he had reconnected the stardrive with the saucer section.

Geordi would later replace Logan as Chief Engineer of the starship Enterprise from Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2 onward.

3 riker used a saucer separation to rescue picard, star trek: the next generation, season 4, episode 1, "the best of both worlds, part ii".

The USS Enterprise-D carried out a saucer separation during the epic Star Trek: The Next Generation two-parter, "The Best of Both Worlds" . Commander Elizabeth Shelby (Elizabeth Dennehy) suggested to Captain Picard and Commander Riker that a saucer separation could create a significant distraction in encounters with the Borg Collective. Riker opposed the strategy because he felt that it would take away valuable resources during a battle, namely the power used by the saucer's impulse engines. However, Riker and Shelby later had cause to revisit this strategy once Picard was captured by the Borg.

Riker knew that Locutus of Borg would retain the tactical information held in Picard's brain, so he used it to the Enterprise's advantage. Riker ordered the USS Enterprise-D to engage the Borg Cube, and initiated a saucer separation. Picard's knowledge of the saucer separation maneuver meant that the Borg directly engaged the stardrive section and ignored the saucer for long enough that it could launch a shuttle craft which contained a rescue team. The distraction enabled Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and Lt. Worf to beam aboard the cube and capture Locutus, giving Starfleet a huge tactical advantage.

2 Escaping A Catastrophic Warp Core Breach In The Enterprise-D's Saucer

Star trek generations.

There were a handful of attempted saucer separations between "The Best of Both Worlds" and the end of Star Trek: The Next Generation , but they were abandoned due to their dangerous implications. The Enterprise-D's next saucer separation was also its last, as it was necessitated by a catastrophic warp core breach in the stardrive section . In Star Trek Generations , the Enterprise was ambushed by the Duras sisters in the Veridian system, causing severe damage to the ship, resulting in a coolant leak in the warp containment system. With the drive section compromised, Commander Riker ordered a full evacuation of personnel to the Enterprise's saucer section.

The starship Enterprise's saucer section made it to relative safety before the stardrive section exploded. However, the shockwave of the explosion knocked the saucer out of orbit, sending what was left of the Enterprise-D hurtling toward the surface of Veridian III. The crew made a crash landing, but the damage to the Enterprise's saucer was so extensive that the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew needed a new starship by the end of Star Trek Generations .

The destruction of the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek Generations is the opposite to what Gene Roddenberry wanted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock . The Star Trek creator believed that the Enterprise's saucer should have been destroyed, rather than the whole ship.

1 saucer separation during krall's attack on the enterprise, star trek beyond.

The idea of Kirk's Enterprise having the ability to separate the saucer was first mooted by legendary Star Wars designer Ralph McQuarrie for the abandoned movie, Star Trek: Planet of the Titans . However, it wouldn't become a reality until 2016's Star Trek Beyond , when Chris Pine's Captain Kirk ordered a saucer separation maneuver while under attack from Krall (Idris Elba) and his swarm ships. The Enterprise was devastated by the onslaught, losing the warp nacelles and the majority of its secondary hull. In a desperate attempt to restore power to the impulse engines, Kirk tried to initiate a saucer separation but was interrupted by Krall.

Lt. Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana) finished the sequence for Kirk, and separated the saucer from what was left of the Enterprise's hull. However, much like the USS Enterprise-D in Star Trek Generations , it was completed too late to make any difference. With the starship Enterprise's saucer caught in the gravitational pull of the planet Altamid, it crashed on to the surface, damaged beyond repair. The saucer separation and Enterprise crash landing was a thrilling start to Chris Pine's third, and to date, last Star Trek movie.

At the time of writing, all episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and the movie Star Trek Beyond are available to stream on Paramount+, while Star Trek Generations is available on Max.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third installment in the sci-fi franchise and follows the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew members of the USS Enterprise. Set around one hundred years after the original series, Picard and his crew travel through the galaxy in largely self-contained episodes exploring the crew dynamics and their own political discourse. The series also had several overarching plots that would develop over the course of the isolated episodes, with four films released in tandem with the series to further some of these story elements.

Star Trek Beyond Finally Explored The Starship Enterprise’s Real Mission

  • Star Trek Beyond depicts the banalities of a five-year mission, highlighting isolation and tedium aboard the USS Enterprise.
  • The movie explores the crew's struggle with monotony and their search for meaning during prolonged space travel.
  • Chris Pine's Captain Kirk gains a renewed sense of purpose at the end of Star Trek Beyond, setting the stage for a potential sequel.

Star Trek Beyond finally showed the starship Enterprise's real mission by portraying the day-to-day realities of spending five years in deep space. The third Chris Pine movie is unique among Star Trek movies because it goes back to basics by depicting the USS Enterprise's five-year mission. Previous Star Trek movies had generally focused on a single high-stakes cinematic adventure for the crew of the starship Enterprise, such as the battle against Section 31 and Khan Noonien Singh (Benedict Cumberbatch) in Star Trek into Darkness .

Star Trek into Darkness ended with Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) excited about embarking on his five-year mission of exploration. Star Trek Beyond picks up the story three years into the USS Enterprise's five-year mission , and Kirk appears to have lost his passion for the mission. Scotty actor Simon Pegg, who co-wrote the third Chris Pine Star Trek movie , was keen to show the isolation, tedium, and banality of the Enterprise's five-year mission because it was crucial to Kirk and the crew's stories in Star Trek Beyond.

Every Star Trek Movie Ranked (From Worst To Best)

Star trek beyond showed the realities of the uss enterprise's five-year mission, simon pegg says the enterprise crew were "cooped up"..

Star Trek Beyond 's stars Chris Pine, Karl Urban and Simon Pegg all discussed the movie's opening sequence in The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years: From The Next Generation to J. J. Abrams: The Complete, Uncensored, and Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross. As co-writer of Star Trek Beyond , and a fan of Star Trek: The Original Series , Simon Pegg was keen to explain why they decided to depict the five-year mission as something quite banal. Read Pegg's quote below:

Simon Pegg: That was never really questioned in the movies, about the fact that they were on this five-year mission, away from all their loved ones and just basically all cooped up together in one spaceship. What would that be like? Not just for Kirk, but for all of them. That’s a nice thing to look at.

Chris Pine and Karl Urban responded well to this emotionally realistic portrayal of what it must be like to spend five years aboard the USS Enterprise. In one of Star Trek Beyond 's best lines, Chris Pine's Captain Kirk muses that " If the universe is truly endless, then are we not striving for something forever out of reach? " However, as Pine and Urban explain in The Fifty-Year Mission , Kirk's search for meaning is at the heart of Star Trek Beyond 's story. Read Karl Urban and Chris Pine's quotes below:

Chris Pine: So it looks at what it’s like to be with the same crew of people for five years. What is the boredom of that kind of monotony; of having to find meaning and vision when you have to grab a fourteenth cup of coffee to stay awake to get through the night?
Karl Urban: It questions why we are doing what we’re doing. What is the validity of it? What is the meaning of it? Through this movie we disperse and go on these amazing individual journeys of growth, and then come together.

Star Trek Beyond Never Completed Its Five-Year Mission

Is kirk's enterprise doomed to never complete a five-year mission on screen.

Star Trek Beyond ended by giving Captain Kirk a renewed sense of purpose and a brand-new USS Enterprise with which to continue his five-year mission. Sadly, no sequel to Star Trek Beyond surfaced, with Star Trek 4 still in development eight years later. Chris Pine's Star Trek adventures being effectively canceled after three movies draws an uncomfortable parallel with the cancelation of Star Trek: The Original Series after three seasons. Hopefully, like William Shatner in the TOS movies, Chris Pine's Captain Kirk will get a chance to complete his Starfleet mission on the big screen at some point in the future.

In the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek Films, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew return to fight a new enemy who puts everything they and the Federation stand for to the ultimate test. This third installment of the rebooted Star Trek films marked the 50th anniversary of the classic sci-fi franchise.

Star Trek: The USS Enterprise's Best Commanding Officers, Ranked

The USS Enterprise in Star Trek has been home to many commanding officers. Here are the best of the bunch.

  • Characters like Riker, Archer, and Pike have strong ties to the Enterprise, shaping its legacy across the timeline.
  • Spock's journey from Ensign to Captain, representing the unique Vulcan-human dichotomy, resonates in modern Star Trek iterations.
  • Picard, the soul of modern Starfleet, prioritizes diplomacy and intellect in navigating the galaxy's challenges aboard the Enterprise.

No other starship in science fiction history has as much name recognition as the Enterprise. Even people not into the Star Trek franchise recognize this famous space-faring vessel . The IP could be rebranded as "Enterprise" and the fans would barely notice the change.

Star Trek: Worst Starships to Work On

Star Trek: Worst Starships To Work On

It makes sense that the most popular and beloved characters in Star Trek would have some connection with the Enterprise. Some of the most popular characters in the galaxy's history have served as commanding officers on everyone's favorite starship.

7 William Riker

The yang to picard's yin.

Jonathan Frakes as Captain William Riker

  • Ship: USS Enterprise-D and Enterprise-E
  • Rank: Commanding Officer, First Officer, Captain

Diplomacy might have been the main theme in The Next Generation , but that doesn't mean the bridge doesn't need a bit of muscle. William Riker was always the more outspoken and emotional half of the command on the Enterprise D and would often step in to back up Picard's delicate touch with some confident attitude.

Riker wasn't just an important character in TNG ; he also played an essential role in several of the movies and appears in various other shows, including Picard, Discovery, Enterprise, Voyager , and even in animated form in Lower Decks . Riker's popularity is partly due to his experience in Starfleet; he's been in a command position on several other Federation ships, like the Titan and the Zheng He, and when directing a battle, he often took the fight to his opponent.

6 Jonathan Archer

The first captain of the enterprise ever.

Scott Bakula as Capt. Jonathan Archer in Star Trek

  • Ship: Enterprise NX-01
  • Rank: Captain

Before there was a United Federation of Planets or a Starfleet as fans know them in the present day, there was an Enterprise, and its Captain was Jonathan Archer. Archer's father designed and built the first warp engines, so it makes sense that the first official starship powered by that engine would have him as the captain.

Humanity's history of space exploration had a rocky start, squeezed under the careful diplomacy of the Vulcans, and it took Archer's leadership to break through the glass ceiling they'd built around Earth. Jonathan Archer would go on to become an Admiral and helped found the modern institutions that humans in the future take for granted.

5 Una Chin-Riley

Also known as number one.

strange-new-worlds-rebecca-romijn-una-chin-riley

  • Ship: USS Enterprise NCC-1701
  • Rank: Lieutenant Commander

She was only known as Number One when she appeared in the pilot episode of Star Trek in 1965, a nameless officer played by Majel Barrett. Not only did she take command of the Enterprise when Captain Pike was held captive by the Talosians , but she was the one who demonstrated with steel determination and a phaser set to blow just how difficult it would be to make human beings into pets.

Spock, Pike, and Number One in Strange New Worlds

6 Things We Loved About Star Trek: Strange New Worlds's Pilot Episode

Strange New Worlds is a spin-off series that was born from the popularity of Star Trek: Discovery , and its plot describes the early life of the original USS Enterprise in the years before James Kirk. The series included many of the same characters from that early pilot episode, and it was the Discovery episode, "Such Sweet Sorrow, Part 2," that finally gave this famous commanding officer a name.

4 Christopher Pike

Trained and taught some of the best.

Ethan Peck as Spock. Anson Mount as Christopher Pike. Rebecca Romijn as Number One.

Christopher Pike was the captain of the Enterprise in the pilot episode of Star Trek that was filmed in 1965. The episode was later edited into a two-parter called "The Menagerie," which aired as part of the regular TOS lineup in 1966. The plot included some interesting backstories about Spock and Pike's former first officer, Una Chin-Riley, and a lesson about how Vulcan loyalty isn't as rigid as one might have thought.

The original version of "The Cage" only aired many decades later in the 1980s, and even after that point, his name remained an obscure reference until he appeared as a supporting character in the Kelvin universe movies. Pike was brought in as a temporary captain in Star Trek: Discovery and resonated well enough with audiences to generate a spin-off, Strange New Worlds .

A Fan Favorite And A Stellar Commander

Spock in

  • Rank: Executive Officer, Science Officer, Commander, Captain

Spock was one of the few characters to survive from the pilot into the regular show, although his character became considerably more stoic in the following episodes. He's famous for representing the dichotomy between Vulcans and humans, with his Ambassador father and human mother, and he was one of the first Vulcans to attend the Academy and serve in Starfleet .

Star Trek 's most recognizable Science Officer has been in almost every show and movie in the IP, and he appears in the Kelvin Timeline movies as two characters because of a time loop. His character is also part of the cast in Strange New Worlds and Discovery, two assignments that would shape his future career. This is the younger version of Spock, and viewers can watch his rise from Ensign to Captain.

2 Jean-Luc Picard

The soul of modern starfleet.

Jean Luc Picard Star Trek TNG

  • Ship: USS Enterprise-D

Picard was a diplomat with a quick wit and sharp edge, and even though he wasn't the kind to start fights, he was surprisingly good at finishing them. Although always taking the path of peace when possible, Captain Picard was savage in knowing and using official Starfleet and Federation rules when it came to getting the results that he wanted.

Star Trek: 8 Impressive Things Jean-Luc Picard Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

Brains before brawn were what the Federation needed in the post-Kirk era when Klingons were training in Starfleet and serving as officers on Federation starships. This was the time of the Borg and the Q Continuum and was home to other unique enemies that required more thought to outsmart as opposed to brute force. Picard's goal was always diplomacy on behalf of Starfleet, regardless of the danger or doubt, even with hostile forces. Out of all the officers to serve on the Enterprise, it's fitting that he would be the one to serve as Chancellor of Starfleet Academy.

1 James T. Kirk

The face of the enterprise.

star trek tos captain james t kirk

  • Rank: Commander, Captain, Admiral

James Tiberius Kirk was the younger, more idealistic captain who replaced the older and slightly jaded Christopher Pike from the pilot episode. His bravado took the viewers across the galaxy and gave the franchise enough steam to power it through 50 years, with no signs of slowing down.

Kirk wasn't alone on the bridge, of course, and the characters that accompanied and supported him were part of the reason. Spock, Bones, Uhura, and Sulu were just a few of the brace explorers that joined the Enterprise crew, and although not all of them were officers, they were just as important as he was. Although he would eventually reach the rank of Admiral, Kirk was never happy as a professor and bureaucrat and was pleased when he was demoted back to Captain after the events of Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home .

The Technical Manual was first published as a vinyl-jacketed hardcover in 1975. The actual book, removable from the vinyl jacket, was labeled "Star Fleet Technical Manual" on a solid red cover, printed in a fashion to look like a real technical manual or textbook, with no mention of Star Trek at all. Later printings have all been paperbacks with updated covers, all mentioning Star Trek prominently:

  • 1986 – a " Star Trek 20 years 1966–1986" logo was added to the top left of the cover
  • 1991 – a " Star Trek 25th Anniversary!" logo is displayed in the left corner
  • 1996 – an all-new cover with a " Star Trek 30 years" logo in the same corner
  • 2006 – "Star Trek" portion of title enlarged, with the "40 Years" logo on the middle right and "Star Fleet" spacing slightly changed to appear as two words rather than just one

Titan Books also published their own version of the book in the UK in 1991, coinciding with the 25th anniversary .

The Star Trek episode ‘banned’ after predicting a ‘united’ Ireland

The Star Trek episode The High Ground.

A Star Trek episode released in 1990 has only ever been screened in Ireland once over concerns about a single line .

The original season of the sci-fi series first hit screens in 1966 and ran for three years.

It was then followed by Star Trek: The Next Generation , which aired from 1987 until 1994.

However nearly 35 years after it aired, one episode from the franchise’s second series is still ‘banned’ .

Titled The High Ground, the 12 th episode of the third season sees a crew member of the Federation Starfleet starship USS Enterprise-D taken hostage by terrorists who hope Federation involvement will help them win concessions for their cause.

In one scene android character Data, played by actor Brent Spiner, spoke about the ‘Irish unification of 2024’ as an example of violence successfully achieving a political aim.

The Star Trek episode The High Ground.

Originally shown in the US in 1990, there was so much concern over the exchange that the episode was not broadcast on the BBC or Irish public broadcaster RTÉ.

At the time, US TV shows often debuted internationally several years after their original broadcast.

Two years later, satellite broadcaster Sky reportedly aired an edited version, cutting the crucial scene.

The episode was then shown by the BBC on September 29 2007, however BBC Archives has said it believes that is the only time it’s ever been aired.

The decision not to air the episode came at a time when deadly conflict continued to rage in Northern Ireland, with the Provisional IRA – a paramilitary group with the aim of ending British rule in Northern Ireland – one of its main protagonists.

Now, in 2024, Sinn Féin, which emerged as the political wing of the IRA, is the largest party in the devolved Stormont assembly.

Reflecting on the episode, writer Melinda M Snodgrass told the BBC she had no clue at the time how the episode would still be so divisive decades later.

The Star Trek episode The High Ground.

‘We became aware of it later… and there isn’t much you can do about it,’ she said.

‘Writing for television is like laying track for a train that’s about 300 feet behind you. You really don’t have time to stop.’

But she added: ‘Science fiction is incredibly important because it allows people to discuss difficult topics – but at arm’s length.’

The episode, which was based on the theme of terrorism, saw the Starship Enterprise’s chief medical officer Dr Beverly Crusher is abducted by the separatist Ansata group, who use murder and violence to pursue their aim of independence.

In it, Data commented: ‘I’ve been reviewing the history of armed rebellion, and it appears that terrorism is an effective way to promote political change.’

Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by Patrick Stewart responded: ‘Yes it can be, but I have never subscribed to the theory that political power flows from the barrel of a gun.’

The Star Trek episode The High Ground.

However, the android then added: ‘Yet there are numerous examples of when it was successful. The independence of the Mexican state from Spain, the Irish unification of 2024, and the Kenzie rebellion.’

The exchange then saw Data ask whether it would be ‘accurate to say that terrorism is acceptable when all options for peaceful settlement have been foreclosed?’.

‘Data, these are questions that mankind has been struggling with throughout history. Your confusion is only human,’ the Captain shared.

Snodgrass said her script’s parallels to what was unfolding in Northern Ireland at the time was deliberate.

‘I was a history major before I went to law school and I wanted to get into that; discuss the fact that one man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist,’ she said.

‘I mean, these are complicated issues. And when do people feel like their back is so much against the wall that they have no choice but to turn to violence? And is that actually ever justified?’

A Republicans holds an Irish Flag as he stands next to a line of police during clashes in the Oldpark area of north Belfast, northern Ireland, on August 9, 2015.

She added that what they wanted to say at the time was: ‘If we’re talking and not shooting, we’re in a better place.’

The episode was initially due to air in the UK in 1992, two years before the IRA ceasefire and six before the Good Friday Agreement.

From 1988 until 1994, a ban was enforced on broadcasting the voices of members of certain groups from Northern Ireland on TV and radio.

The BBC’s press office said it had spoken to ‘a number of people’ about why a ban may have been implemented but was unable to get this information ‘as it dates quite far back’.

Star Trek is streaming on Netflix.
