As you make your way down Exeter’s Western Way, through the relaxing streets, you’ll probably realise pretty quickly that Exeter has more than a few options when it comes to student accommodation. It won’t be until you step inside the Kingfisher, find your room, and start unpacking that you realise that the Kingfisher offers the best student accommodation in the city.

Centrally located, the Kingfisher is right in the middle of everything that matters. The University of Exeter is only a short fifteen-minute walk away from the Kingfisher, making getting to the university incredibly easy.

To the west, on Sidwell Street, you’ll find more than a few fine dining establishments – including local establishments such as Efes Grill, as well as chain restaurants such as KFC and Domino’s Pizza. To the southwest of the Kingfisher, you’ll find specialist supermarkets, as well as the larger Princesshay Shopping Centre. To both the north and south, you’ll find first-rate cinema experiences – great for an evening out. Going eastwards, you’ll find Belmont Park – a great spot if you’re looking to get into nature on a busy day. If you’re looking to go further afield, Exeter Central train station is less than ten minute’s walk.

But these are only some of the things you’ll find near the Kingfisher. Scroll below to learn more. Even better, book a visit to The Kingfisher today and discover Exeter yourself!

Specific postgraduate course information

Programmes beginning in January

Studying for a PGCE means that you are likely to need short term accommodation with dates which do not align with our accommodation contracts. The Initial Teacher Education Partnership Office usually notifies trainees of their provisional placements in late July. They recommend that you do not commit yourself to long term accommodation until your placements are confirmed in the Autumn term. The Partnership Office has a database for accommodation across the region (excluding Exeter and surrounds) and you will have access to this when you commence the course.

There is a wide range of private accommodation available in Exeter and surrounding areas and many support services here at the University to help with your accommodation search. Take a look at the Private Accommodation pages   for support with your search, including advice services and Studentpad , our online accommodation search site.

MSc Financial Analysis and Fund Management (FAFM)

If you're joining our  MSc FAFM  course you will need to arrive to the University before the main academic year begins.

  • Very few of our residences can accept arrivals before Arrivals Weekend, so a temporary room, which you will need to pay for, is likely to be offered to you until your longer term residence contract begins.
  • There are a limited number of temporary rooms available for early arrivals, all in an off campus self catered residence, in mixed gender flats. We aim to group all FAFM students together in temporary accommodation.
  • If your term time room will be available within three days of your arrival date, we will not offer you a temporary room. You will need to seek alternative accommodation until your room is available.
  • When you complete your accommodation application form, state that you will be a FAFM student, and if you need to move in before Arrivals Weekend, you’ll also need to complete an  early arrival application form from early July in the year you start your course.

MA International Film Business students

Joining our  MA International Film Business  programme means that you are likely to need short term accommodation in Exeter with dates which do not align with our accommodation contracts.

MA Curation

Joining our  MA Curation: Art and Business programme  or  MA Curation: Contemporary Art and Cultural Management means that you are likely to need accommodation with dates which do not align with our accommodation contracts.

There is a wide range of private accommodation available in Exeter and surrounding areas and many support services here at the University to help with your accommodation search. Take a look at the Private Accommodation pages   for support with your search, including advice services and Studentpad our online accommodation search site.

The proximity of Lafrowda to key university facilities and the attractive studio accommodations were the main factors that led me to choose it as my preferred accommodation. And I must say, it has been a decision that I'm grateful for, as it has contributed to a seamless and enjoyable university experience. Brian Pereira, Postgraduate Student, 2023

University Living

Find out all you need to know about University of Exeter accommodation. Our blog has a wealth of information for both prospective and current students.

Catered Living

Catered Living

Good morning everyone! Last week we gave you a whistle stop tour of our various types of accommodation on offer. As promised, this week we will be going into more detail about our catered accommodation options to help you decide if catered living will be right for you.

exeter uni accommodation virtual tour

Our applications will open on the  12 th  April 2021  for new students, so you have plenty of time to think about your four top preferences for accommodation. Please note that we cannot guarantee that you will be allocated one of these preferences but we will try our hardest!

What are the benefits of living in a catered residence?

exeter uni accommodation virtual tour

If you are living in a catered residence, you will take your meals in one of our communal dining halls. Many students find that this is gives them a great sense of community and is an easy way to make new friends.

Which residences are catered?

  • Holland Hall  is composed of en-suite rooms, a glass-fronted restaurant and a sun terrace. Holland Hall has 406 rooms, some of these with a stunning view over the Exe valley.
  • Mardon Hall  is our oldest purpose-built residence. It includes a wood-panelled library (now used as a study room) and grand staircases. The residence has a mixture of single standard rooms and twin standard rooms.
  • Birks Grange Village  is composed of self-catered, catered and studio accommodation. The catered residences have en-suite rooms in clusters of up to nine. There are also communal spaces and a small shop.
  • Exeter Halls  is composed of Lopes Hall, Ransom  Pickard and Pennsylvania Court with a mixture of standard, twin and en-suite rooms. Lopes Hall contains a large dining room for all three of these residences as well as a social area shared between the three.

Our catered residences are all on-campus and are available on a 32 week contract. This means that you will not be permitted to stay in your room during the Christmas and Easter holidays. However, we can arrange alternative accommodation for you during these times if needs be.

What type of food is available? The University catering team provide a great variety of choices. Included in your accommodation fees are 16 meals per-week. These are available at the below times:

  • Breakfast:  Monday to Friday 7:45am-9.30am
  • Dinner:  Monday to Sunday 5.30pm-7.15pm
  • Continental Breakfast:  Saturday 8.00am-11.00am and Sunday 8.30am-11.00am
  • Brunch:  Saturday and Sunday 11.15am-1.30pm

Special dietary requirements can be catered for but we will need to let our chefs know in advance. Each meal will have vegetarian options.  For examples of the menus within catered halls, please visit our  website . Our  YouTube video  provides a students insight into our catered accommodation

You will need to provide your own lunches and snacks, but you will be equipped with your own fridge and some residences will also have utilities rooms to prepare food.

We hope that this blog has been useful, please do take a look at our catered residences webpage for more information. Next week we will be looking at Self-catered accommodation. Have a great week!
