Hampi – The Heritage Site Of Architectural Wonder!

Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra river in the Vijayanagara district of Karnataka. It is a sheer delight for travellers, who have an eye for history and religion. The ancient ruins of the historic village of Hampi, which spreads over 4,100 hectares, are remnants of the glorious past and still strike wonder in people who visit the place.

The History of Hampi

Hampi was a fortified city and the capital of the Vijayanagara empire in the 14th century. Hampi in 1500 CE had the glory of being the world’s second largest city after Beijing. It was a flourishing city, drawing traders from Persia and Portugal. It has been recorded in the chronicles by the Persian, European travellers, particularly the Portuguese that Hampi on the banks of the Tungabhadra river in those days spelt prosperity with many temples, farms and trade markets.

The monuments of the Vijayanagara city were constructed between 1336-1570 AD from the times of Harihara-I to Sadasiva Raya. Krishnadevaraya also contributed in the way of royal buildings from 1509 to 30 AD. The structures boast of Dravidian architecture. However, in 1565, the muslim sultanates conquered Hampi and brought its ruin. Though the place is pillaged and is in ruins, the beautiful natural setting of Hampi, which comprises the River Tungabhadra and the boulders are present to this day. 

Hampi today – Places to visit in Hampi

Hampi is an archeological wonder and famous for its beautiful monuments, though in ruins that are remnants of the glorious past. UNESCO describes Hampi as an “austere, grandiose site” boasting of “forts, riverside features, royal and sacred complexes, temples, shrines, pillared halls, mandapas, memorial structures, water structures, stables etc. Large dimensions, florid ornamentation, bold and delicate carvings, stately pillars, magnificent pavilions are characteristics of the temples of Hampi, depicting scenes from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. 

• Of these, the Krishna temple complex, Narasimha, Ganesa, Hemakuta group of temples, Achyutaraya temple complex, Vitthala temple complex, Pattabhirama temple complex, Lotus Mahal complex etc are worth the mention. 
• The Virupaksha temple , also referred to as the Pampapathi temple is beautifully renovated, maintaining its old charm and is now in worship. It is the oldest shrine and the most important destination for tourists and pilgrims.
• The Vittala temple is a splendid depiction of the Vijayanagara style of architecture. 
• Hazara Ramachandra temple, Chandrasekhara temple, the Krishna temple, Pattabhirama temple, Jaina temples are also other examples of beauty and grace. 
• The Queen’s palace and the Lotus-Mahal within the Zenana enclosure depict the magnificent anthapura. 
• The Dhananayaka’s enclosure (treasury), Mahanavami Dibba, the elephant’s stables , pillared mandapas and numerous ponds and lakes still speak of the erstwhile glory of Hampi. 
• There has also been recent excavations of palatial complexes, a large number of stone images, beautiful terracotta objects, stucco figures, a square stepped-tank (Sarovara) at the south-west of Mahanavami Dibba, Buddhist sculptures of 2nd -3rd century AD etc.
• The Archaeological museum is a home to antiques and great sculptures.
• The underground Shiva temple is one of the oldest temples in Hampi, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Most parts of this temple remain submerged in water because it was built several meters below the ground level.
• The Yantrodharaka Hanuman temple , also called the Monkey temple, believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman situated on a hillock, is also worth the visit in Hampi.
• Bellary , Anegundi and Kamalapur near Hampi have historical value and attract a lot of tourists.

Best time to visit Hampi

The best time to visit Hampi is from October to February during Winter, favourable for exploring the place except in the warm afternoons. The monsoon season from July to September is also an ideal time to visit Hampi with less rain, yet rendering a vibrant green look to its surroundings. Summer from March to June is generally very hot and is not the ideal time to visit Hampi.

How to reach Hampi

Hubli Airport, which is about 170 km from the historic site of Hampi is the nearest airport and tourists can avail cabs in the airport to reach Hampi.

The Hospet junction is the nearest and well-connected railway station to Hampi, which is around 13 km. From here, one can avail a cab to reach Hampi. This is one of the preferred modes of transport to Hampi. 

Hampi is well connected by road to the rest of the places in Karnataka. Apart from the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), private buses and also interstate buses ply regularly from the neighbouring cities and towns. Bus travel from Bangalore to Hampi takes less than 8 hours. Tourists can also drive to Hampi via NH13 route from Hyderabad (375 km), Bangalore (341 km) and Hubli (167 km).

Welcome to Hampi – the largest open air museum of India . If you like visiting historical places you will definitely be in for a treat at Hampi – the UNESCO World Heritage site of Karnataka, India. Which once flourished as one of the richest kingdoms in the world. And was the epitome of cultural and architectural brilliance. In fact, the kingdom of Hampi had markets where international traders came for trade, had cultural events where artists from across the world were invited. The era of the Vijayanagara Empire in Hampi was one of the most glorious for India.

About Hampi  – the largest open air museum of India

History of hampi – ramayana era.

Although most of the glorious structures of Hampi are attributed to the Vijayanagara Empire . But actually, it’s past goes back upto the era of Ramayana. And even the Puranas. It was then called “ Pampa Devi Tirtha Kshetra” . Because it is believed, Pampa Devi , a form of Goddess Parvati , resided in this region. Goddess Parvati did meditation for years and attended spiritual power while staying in this region. And this is where Shiva and Parvati got married. Also, when they got married, it is believed that showers of gold from heaven blessed the region. Forming the “Hemkuta Hills” which you will see right besides the Virupaksha Temple in Hampi.

In fact the word “ Pampa ” is a sanskrit word which over time transformed into “ Hampa ” – a kannada version. And finally this place came to be known as Hampi. Even the river Tungabhadra on whose bank Hampi is located was called Pampa River for the same reasons.

Another legend from Ramayana states that this is where Vali and Sugriv got into a fight. The two of them threw huge boulders on each other. And that is what explains the huge monolithic granite boulders that you see all around Hampi.

How interesting!!

History of Hampi – The grandeur of Vijayanagara Empire

As early as 2nd century BC, Hampi was part of the great Maurya Empire of emperor Ashoka . The evidence of which is found in the form of coins and artefacts excavated in Hampi. Later, it was also ruled by the Chalukyas and Hoysala . In fact, it was the Chalukyas who commissioned land for construction of Virupaksha Temple in Hampi.

During the 13th to 15th Century, Hampi saw a rise in power. As the Vijayanagara Empire flourished in this region. The Vijayanagara Kings were not only progressive. But also great patrons of art. As a result, art, architecture and creativity flourished in their kingdom. The result of which is the numerous ancient temples, large and small with intricately carved pillars and painted ceilings like none other. And enormous royal structures all around Hampi including palaces, markets, stables for horses and elephants, stepped water tanks, water reservoirs and a lot more.

Hampi was so prosperous that traders from as far as Persia (current day Iran) and Portugal traveled here for trade and business deals. There were huge markets setup in this area for encouraging smooth trade. As of today, we can visit seven such huge markets in Hampi. In fact, as per some writings and accounts of travellers, Hampi was the second most prosperous and largest town of this era, after Beijing.

Alas, from around 15th Century, the Muslim Rulers of the North attacked Hampi several times. And finally defeated the then king of Hampi. What followed was reckless plundering and looting of the vast empire of Hampi that continued for over 6 months. At the end of which, the kingdom was completely abandoned. And turned into a ghost town. And became what we today know it as – the monuments of Hampi or the UNESCO World Heritage site in Karnataka.

The cultural heritage tour of Karnataka – Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal & Aihole

Hampi is often visited along with Pattadakal, Aihole and Badami as a cultural circuit of North Karnataka. Aihole is fondly called the “school of temple architecture” in India. As it is a very interesting place where one can see prototypes of several famous temples of India. It is believed that the art of temple architecture started here, and a lot of practice was done on prototypes.

Pattadakal, on the other hand, just 10km from Aihole, is called the “University of Temple Architecture in India”. As the artists gained perfection, they created huge and stunning temples. Which stand today in the Pattadakala Temple Complex . This is another UNESCO World Heritage site in Karnataka.

And around 10km to Pattadakal is Badami – the sandstone hill surrounded valley of Malaprabha river where you will see rock cut cave temples of Badami like nowhere else. The beautiful Bhootnath Temple on the banks of Lake Agastya . And several other architectural wonders to discover in Badami will await you.

Often one can do a trip to Hampi, Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole together. Wherein one can base themselves in Hampi for 3-4 days. And then shift to Badami for couple of more days. From Badami, one can visit Pattadakal and Aihole on a day trip. And spend the other day exploring Badami. We visited Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole on a separate road trip from Bangalore. Here’s the details of our trip to Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole .

Badami, Pattadakal and Aihole region was like the cultural centre which flourished in parallel to the kingdom of Hampi which in turn was the main business hub.

Where to stay in Hampi

Hampi has definitely been gaining a lot of popularity over the last few years. As, when we visited here almost a decade back there was hardly any stay option in Hampi. But, now, it abounds with all kind of accommodation options from humble guesthouses, bed and breakfast, homestays to hotels and luxury resorts. Couple of properties that we have personally stayed in Hampi include –

Our stay experience was good at both of these places. But will definitely prefer Royal Orchid as it was more comfortable and had a lavish breakfast spread.

How to reach Hampi

The ruins of Hampi are located almost 10km from the town of Hospet in Karnataka.

Hospet railway station is located some 15-20km from the ruins of Hampi. There are many hotels in Hospet town as well including some of the above mentioned luxury hotels. In fact, both the times on our trip to Hampi, we stayed in Hospet. You can book an overnight train from Bangalore to Hampi or Hyderabad to Hampi. And from the railway station get an autorickshaw to your accommodation.

Hampi and Hospet are well connected to other towns of Karnataka as well as Andhra via road network. We did a road trip from Bangalore to Hampi. We followed this route on our Bangalore to Hampi road trip :

Bangalore -> Neelamangala -> Tumkuru -> Chitradurga -> Hospete -> Hampi

The highway from Bangalore to Hospet is in excellent condition.

Hospet also has a domestic airport now. So, one can also fly to the town of Hospet and then visit Hampi from there. Although the number of flights are limited. Bangalore and Mysore have more options of flights compared to Hospet.

When is the best time to visit Hampi

Winter months from November to February are considered best to visit Hampi.

However as per my guide to visit Hampi, you will find the pre-monsoon season also an excellent time to explore Hampi. As mostly skies are overcast during this time. And with the pleasant monsoon winds blowing, it really makes for a very nice weather to visit Hampi.

Summer months of March – May are best avoided. As the temperature in this region crosses 40 degrees.

In monsoon season, there is a risk of flooding in Hampi if all of a sudden very heavy rain happens. So, monsoon season should also ve avoided if possible. However, monsoons are often characterised by intermittent dry spells. And you can definitely check the weather forecast and visit Hampi in those dry spells.

How to explore the places to see in Hampi

As per our guide to visit Hampi, you can divide the places to see in Hampi in these major groups.

• Virupaksha Temple and it’s surroundings (Part of the ruins of Hampi Kingdom)
• Vithala Temple and it’s surroundings (Part of the ruins of Hampi Kingdom)
• Royal Enclosure of Hampi (Part of the ruins of Hampi Kingdom)
• Hippie Island Hampi across the Tungabhadra River
• Newly added places to see in and around Hospet Town (Zoo, Park near Tungabhadra Dam etc.)

Each one of these is geographically a little distant from the rest. And contains a lot of places to see. So, you can visit each region separately.

You can easily drive to the above three regions in which I have divided the ruins of Hampi. Near each region, you will find a car parking spot where you can park your vehicle and then walk around.

While another good option is to hire a local autorickshaw for a complete day and hop between places using it. Many a times, the autorickshaw drivers are very well informed. Thus, they can act as your guide as well.

To reach Hippie Island, you can either go via road. Or, take a ferry across the Tungabhadra River on the other side.

As per this guide to visit Hampi, the best is to take breaks between exploring each of the above regions of the ruins of Hampi. As each of these are very extensive. And can be overwhelming with their details.

How many days should I spend in Hampi

This really depends on what all you want to do on your Hampi Trip. If you want to skim through each of the historical ruins then you can visit them all in 2 days. So, you can visit Hampi even over a weekend. Take an overnight train on Friday night. Visit the ruins throughout Saturday from early morning to late evening. Visit the Hippie Islands on Sunday and then take an overnight train back home.

But, if you really want to explore the architectural details of the ruins of Hampi. Then, as per our guide to visit Hampi, you should dedicate a day each to Virupaksha Temple and it’s surroundings , Vittala Temple and it’s surroundings and the Royal Enclosure of Hampi . And then another day to spend some time on the Hippie Island of Hampi .

My first trip to Hampi was very overwhelming. As back then I didn’t have much idea on how to go about exploring the different areas of Hampi. Basically I was unprepared for Hampi. As a result, I mostly explored around Virupaksha Temple and a little bit of the views of Tungabhadra river. But not much beyond that.

Although on my second trip, a 3 days Hampi trip itinerary, I could systematically cover most of the ruins of Hampi across the above 3 trails, I could still not cover Hippie Island. So, I would say, make at least 5 days trip to Hampi to see all the important places to see in Hampi . And experience all that Hampi has to offer.

Guide to visit Hampi – Recommended Hampi Trip Itinerary

As per our guide to Hampi, we recommend two Hampi trip itineraries for you –

Option 1: Take an overnight train from Bangalore to Hampi. Explore the most popular ruins and structures of Hampi. Take an overnight train back to Bangalore on Sunday night.

Option 2: To explore all that Hampi has to offer, follow this itinerary:

Day 1-3 : Explore each of the trails of Hampi each of the days – (1) Virupaksha Temple and around (2) Vithala Temple and around (3) Royal Enclosures of Hampi. Stay in a guesthouse or homestay near the Virupaksha Temple. This way you will get to experience the local life of Hampi more closely. Also, enjoy the hospitality of the locals. And all the ruins are almost walkable from the guest houses.

Day 4: Take a coral ride in a traditional round bamboo boat on the river Tungabhadra from the ferry point near Virupaksha Temple. Enjoy the scenery, the islands on river Tungabhadra. And finally go to Hippi Island. Enjoy overnight on this side of Hampi. You can soak in the natural beauty, absorb the vibes of hippie island and enjoy some delicious food in some of the best cafes on this side of Hampi. You can stay overnight on this side of Hampi. At Hampi Boulders Resort or one of the several guest houses on this side of Hampi.

Day 5: Today, move to the town of Hospet. Visit the Tungabhadra Dam, the park near the dam, the zoo etc.

Day 6: This can be the last day of your trip to Hampi. Enjoy a relaxing day in one of the many luxury resorts of Hampi.

Best places to have food in Hampi

Hampi has really evolved over the years as a tourist destination. It has several places to enjoy all kind of cuisines. From humble homemade food that you will get in the lanes behind the Virupaksha Temple. To one of the most luxurious spreads at resorts like Evolve Back and Shivavilas Palace, you will be spoilt by choice.

Over the next centuries it fell out of importance, and now you can explore the ruins of a lot of temples and other structures spread out over a vast area. The terrain around Hampi is as mysterious as the ruins itself - the city is surrounded by boulders of different sizes, and you can climb to the top of them with a little effort to get a stunning view of the entire city and the geography. Lotus Mahal

Lotus Mahal or Kamal Mahal exhibits an explicit architectural design amongst all the other Hampi tourist places. It is so called as it more or less resembles the shape of a lotus flower. Yantrodharaka Hanuman Temple

Yantrodharaka Hanuman Temple is present at a distance of around 2km from the famous Virupaksha temple. This temple is a part of a cave standing at the peak of a hill and is dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Hanuman. Also, the Tungabhadra river flows through the steps of this hill. Matanga Hill

It lies close to the Lakshmi Narasimha temple and homes to a beautiful Linga carved out of a black stone. The linga is around 3 meters high and dates back to the era of the Vijayanagar Empire. This linga lies within a small stone chamber of this temple with only a single narrow opening and is without a ceiling. Zanana Enclosure homes to three watchtowers each standing at eastern, south-eastern and northern ends of this magnificent structure. The entire architecture here reflects an Indo-Islamic style. Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

Most significant of all the religious statues in Hampi, Lakshmi Narasimha Temple is the amongst the next best Hampi tourist places to visit. Here, the figure of Lord Narasimha sits on a coil of a snake with seven heads in a Yoga position. This statue has an image of Goddess Lakshmi on his lap. It takes around one to one and a half hour to complete your visit here. The best time to visit this temple is in between October to February. Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary

You are going to find a lot of Indian Sloth Bears here at Daroji Sloth bear Sanctuary. Hillocks here are rough enough and are dotted with a lot of boulders. The Sloth bear count here goes to around 120. However, the sanctuary also accounts for other species. Tiger, Leopard, Mongoose, Pangolins, Star Tortoise, and Spotted Deer are some other animal species found here. This sanctuary alone exhibits around 90 bird species, 27 butterfly species, and a watch tower at the center. Old Palace (Gagan Mahal)

This Lord Ganesha’s statue derives its resemblance from that of the mustard seed, which is referred to as Sasivekalu in the local dialect thereby leading to its name. This statue is located on the Southern foothill of the Hemakuta and is almost half the size of Kadalekalu Ganesha located on the Northern slope of the same hill.

This statue derives inspiration from an incident of Hindu mythology when one day Lord Ganesha had eaten so much food that his stomach almost burst. Although on my wishlist since about 3 years, when I declared my vacation spot to be Hampi, I was surprised to know not many people are aware of this paradise! Here’s a glimpse into my budget trip to Hampi vacation if you’re wondering where and what is Hampi. Once you know, there’s no turning back.

How It Happened? Sitting in Grandmama’s Cafe one fine day, my friends and I got to discussing our vacay goals and plans ahead. And the next minute I knew, we were all planning a trip together! Although met with much scepticism, we agreed to lock in Hampi as the destination and boy, are we glad.

Pro Tip: Those balancing a dense work schedule but still wish to travel a lot, here’s what I do. Marry long weekends with smart planning and voila! Your work will never be affected and neither will you have to compromise on travel goals. My Hampi trip was a Republic Day long weekend!

How To Get To Hampi?

We flew to Bengaluru right after office hours and from there booked an Ola Outstation service for 3 days. From here it was an overnight journey to Hampi. This proved to be rather expensive though and I would suggest you book a luxury bus instead from Mumbai to Hospet which takes 14-15 hours.

What’s Hampi? Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located in the central part of the Indian state of Karnataka, a paradise nesting carefully in ruins, taking you back to a long forgotten time of the Hindu Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th-century.

‘Hampe’ in Kannada, Hampi was formerly known as Pampa, one of the many names of the Tungabhadra river (Where Hampi is situated). Pampa Devi was the goddess of the river and the daughter of Lord Brahma.

Hampi has two sides. Completely opposite to each other in nature. One is Temple side/Hampi side/Hampi Bazar and other is Hippie side also known as Hippie Island which is situated in small Virupapura Gadde village which lets you discover your hippie soul. One is filled with historical relevance and other is super laid back.

Lush green paddy fields, supercool cafes, bakeries and guest houses where you will find backpackers from across the world living like a nomad here.

Pro Tip: Don’t look for the deals on hotel booking sites. Just call up the direct number (take it from Google) and book it directly. Yes, you can negotiate as well. We stayed at Bobby ‘One Love’ Guesthouse (Contact: Raghu, 8970076805). Don’t expect luxury! Only basic amenities will be provided.

Where To Eat And What To Do Hippi Island is the place to be for a vast variety of cuisines and tasty dishes. From authentic South Indian food to Spanish, Greek, Israeli, Italian, Singaporean, Indonesian, American & Mexican cuisine, there’s something for everything here!

Note: The only alcohol you’ll find here is cold Beers. Also, non-veg paradise.

I would recommend Hema Café (German Bakery) preferably for breakfast (Multi Cuisine), Mango Tree restaurant for Lunch (They serve delicious Thali and their lemon mint cooler is to die for) and Laughing Buddha for Dinner.

Shopping Scenes Bunch of souvenirs like shawls and cloths, traditional costumes, jewellery, stone figurines, antique coins, replicas of Hampi ruins etc. are what you will find here.

Pro Tip: The best way to move around here is to rent scooters which is usually cheap but expect higher rates in peak season.

Places to Visit

1. Monkey Temple on Anjaneya Hill Awaken the adventurer in you for to get to the top, 520 steps await. But the sun setting over a view of ENTIRE Hampi? Worth the climb. The Temple is the supposed birthplace of Lord Hanuman and hence, the name.

2. Sanapura Lake One of the lesser known locations in Hampi, it is worth visiting. The lake is the backwaters of Tungabhadra river and the ride to get here (10km from Hippie Island) is heavenly. You can also indulge in Coracle rides in these calm waters and hire assistance for cliff jumping. Although many signboards warn of crocodiles, our coracle owner assured us of safety.

3. Virupaksha Temple This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, known here as Virupaksha, as the consort of the local goddess Pampa who is associated with the Tungabhadra River. It is believed to be one of the oldest temples in India where people have been performing continuous worship to God for the last 7 centuries till today.

4. Hemakuta Group Of Temples A rocky hill especially famous for several temples situated on the top of it. This hilltop offers you a lovely scenic view of Hampi and gives a great opportunity to show your photography skills. A lot to explore, a lot to click, a lot to frame!

5. Badavilinga Temple  This is yet another ancient temple featuring a shrine & pedestal with a Hindu linga, surrounded by a pool of water.

6. Statue of Ugra Narasimha The biggest statue in Hampi, this is a fantastic big statue of Lord Narasimha (Nara – man and Simha – lion, a lord combined with a man and lion’s figure) who was the 10th avatar of Lord Vishnu.

7. Sasivekalu Ganesha An enormous statue about 14 ft high of Lord Ganesha. Some big slender stone pillars with many mythological themes carved decorated the front hall of this Statue. Instagram worthy people.

8. Krishna Temple Constructed by the Krishnadevaraya in 1513 to honour lord, Krishna. This temple is one of the best attractions in Hampi. The temple ground is decorated with several stunning Yali designed pillars and impressive carvings of elephant balustrades.

Also, don’t forget to explore the ruins of Krishna bazaar which is right opposite to the temple.

9. Shiva Temple From Krishna Temple head to this unique underground Shiva Temple. For some curious reasons, this temple dedicated to Lord Shiva was built many meters below the ground level. For this reason, almost all the time the sanctum and the core parts of the temple are under water, restricting entry to the inner areas!

10. Vijaya Vittala Temple The architectural marvel, The Vittala Temple or Vitthala Temple in Hampi is an ancient monument that is well-known for its exceptional architecture and unmatched craftsmanship. A must visit for all when in Hampi!

11. Hazara Rama Temple It is one of the important shrines in Hampi dedicated to Lord Ram. It was once the private temple of the kings and the royal family of Vijayanagara. The temple is famous for the lovely bas relics and panels depicting the story of the epic Ramayana.

12. Lotus Mahal Also known as Kamal Mahal or Chitragani Mahal, it is one of the only handful and a few astonishing building in Hampi that had not been damaged or destroyed amid the attack on the city.

13. Stepped Tank Also known as Pushkarani, this is a sacred water tank that is attached to the temples. Most of the major temples in Hampi have a Pushkarani built near them.

14. Elephant Stables The Elephant Stables is a wonderful structure that provided shelter to the royal elephants of the grand Vijayanagara Empire.

15. Zanana Enclosure The Zenana Enclosure was a fortified and secluded area reserved for the royal ladies of the Vijayanagara Empire.

16. Queen’s Bath The luxurious bath which includes a big verandah with a rectangular pool surrounded by extended balconies and carved domes where Vijayanagara Kings and Queens used to take bath. Although called Queen’s bath, the pool was used by both Kings and Queens.

What We Missed But You Shouldn’t

1. Sunset at Matanga Hill If you are staying on the Temple side, this is the best place to get a mesmerizing view of Sunset or Sunrise and a panoramic view of Hampi. It is a moderate hike up the hills for 45mins to 1 hour, depending on one’s capability.

2. Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary Located about 15km from Hampi, Dorji Sloth Bear Sanctuary was created exclusively for the preservation of the Indian Sloth Bear. Visit this between 2 PM – 5 PM as they slather the honey on the rocks to attract the bears so that tourist can get a good spotting.

Hampi, nestled in the Karnataka state of India, is a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its Group of Monuments. The best time to visit Hampi is during the winter, from November to February, when the weather is mild and pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the sprawling ruins and scenic landscapes. The annual Hampi festival in November further enhances the visitor experience with its cultural performances, music, and art exhibitions.

About Vijayanagara Empire

Referred to as the Karnataka Kingdom, the Vijayanagara Empire was founded in 1336 by the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I of the Sangama dynasty. Situated in the Deccan Plateau of South India, the empire derived its name from its illustrious capital, Vijayanagara. Renowned for its luxury, the empire captivated European travellers with its wealth and prosperity.

Temples and Ruins of South Hampi

Mathanga Hill stands as the pinnacle of Hampi, offering unparalleled vistas, especially during sunrise. The ascent to the summit spans approximately 2 kilometres, rewarding trekkers with breathtaking panoramas encompassing Hampi town.

Sree Virupaksha Temple

One of the temples still used for worship and intact in Hampi is the Sree Virupaksha temple. Built in the 7th century by Lakkan Dandesha, the temple is dedicated to Lord Virupaksha, a form of Shiva.

Saasivekaalu Ganesha

Carved out of a single rock, the Saasivekaalu (mustard seed) Ganesha is around 8 feet tall and built in 1500 AD. It is a cute monolithic statue of Lord Ganesha and is kept in the open pavilion.

Lakshmi Narasimha and Badava Linga

At a height of 6.7 metres, the Lakshmi Narasimha is the monolithic fourth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The Narasimha idol is seated on the giant coils of Adishesha , the sacred snake of Lord Vishnu. As per Lithic record, the statue was consecrated by priest Krishnabhatta in 1528 AD.

Just next to Lakshmi Narasimha is the Badava Linga. Standing tall at 3 metres, the Badava linga is also a monolith of Shiva Linga. According to legend, the Badava linga was commissioned by a poor woman.

Akka Tangi Gudda

Akka Tangi Gudda (meaning Stone Sisters in Kannada) is a natural arrangement of gigantic rocks standing at the site for ages. According to legend, the two rocks were two sisters who once visited Hampi during its glory. They became jealous and started talking ill about the town. The reigning deity came to know about this and turned the two sisters into stones. It is also called the Jealous sisters of Hampi.

Hazara Rama Temple

Built in the 15th century, the Hazara Rama Temple was once a private temple for the Kings of the Vijayanagara Empire and is dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple has stunning relics of the stories and scenes from the Hindu mythological story of Ramayana.

Zenana Enclosure

Zenana enclosure is a structural complex that has tall walls on four sides of the complex. The structures are in the Indo-Islamic style of architecture.

Lotus Mahal

Also called Chitrangini Mahal, the Lotus Mahal is a two-storied structure used as a residue place for the royal family of the Vijayanagara Empire. It was specifically built for the women of the royal family.

Elephant Stables

Constructed in the 15th century in Indo-Islamic architectural style, the Elephant stable was built as a stable for state elephants. It has eleven large domed chambers interconnected with arched openings.

Tenali Rama Pavilion

Very close to the Archaeological Museum and Zenana enclosure is the Tenali Rama pavilion. The small stone structure reminds visitors of the notable and funny poet Tenali Ramakrishna, who wrote poems about the Vijayanagara Empire.

Archaeological Museum

Dedicated to the ruins of Hampi, the archaeological museum is a great place to see all the excavated structures and sculptures.

• The museum is open between 10 AM and 5 PM every day.

Royal Enclosure

The vast fortified Royal enclosure was the seat of power for the Vijayanagara kingdom. It housed as many as 45 buildings and spread over 59000 square metres.

Queen’s Bath Place

Used by the king and his wives, the Queen’s bath place is an outdoor pool with fantastic architecture of pillared corridors and decorated windows.

Sree Vitthala Temple

Famous for the stone chariot and musical pillars, Sree Vitthala temple is my favourite temple complex in Hampi. Built during the 15th century, the Vitthala temple is one of the largest temples in the Vijayanagara Empire. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in the form of Vitthala.

• Temple is open between 8:30 AM and 5 PM every day.
• The ticket purchased for the Zenana enclosure can be used here.
• The main gate is around 1 kilometre from the temple. Only some carts, driven by women, can drop visitors from the gate to the temple and back for a small price (INR 20 for one way).

Seven Bazaars of Hampi

Back then, there were seven bazaars (markets) in Hampi where traders would shop for various things, including precious gems. Today, they all lie as ruins where some platforms can be seen. The names of the seven markets are:

• Krishna bazaar.
• Paan Supari bazaar.
• Virupaksha bazaar.
• Achyuta bazaar.
• Vittala bazaar.
• Malyavanta bazaar.
• Varadarajammana bazaar.

Temples of North Hampi (Kishkinda)

The best way to go to Kishkinda is by crossing the Tungabhadra River from South Hampi to the other side on a coracle or a ferry. The ferry is shared, and the one-way crossing costs INR 30 and 50. And the coracle ride is private, and the cost for one-way crossing is between INR 150 and 200.

Once you cross the river, you can hire a two-wheeler for INR 500 per day or an auto rickshaw for INR 1500 per day. The owner of the two-wheeler rentals here is nice and friendly. To hire a two-wheeler, you need to produce your valid government ID.

Anjanadri Betta

Known to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, the Anjanadri betta is a fantastic place to visit. A small temple at the peak also has a floating stone supposedly used to make Rama Sethu. It is also a sunset point and provides panoramic views of the Tungabhadra River.

• The visitors have to climb 575 steps to reach the peak.
• Plenty of parking is available, and the parking fee is INR 5 for a two-wheeler.
• Be careful of monkeys; there are a lot of them.

Chintamani Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Chintamani temple is famous for the spot where Rama had aimed and shot his arrow to kill Baali during the fight with Sugreeva. The temple is located right on the banks of the Tungabhadra River, and one can go down to the river to sit by it and enjoy the cool breeze.

Previously known as Kishkindha, Anegundi is a village on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. According to mythology, Anegundi is the place where monkeys lived in Ramayana.

Shabari Cave and Pampa Sarovara

Shabari’s Cave is where Shabari, the devotee of Lord Rama, used to live and perform her tapasya. It is right next to Pampa Sarovara, a lake in the Koppal district and is considered one of the five sacred lakes in the district. Pampa is where Goddess Parvathi performed penance to show her devotion to Lord Shiva.

Sanakpura Lake

A beautiful place to ride a coracle is Sanakpura Lake. It is a small lake formed by the backwaters of Tungabhadra Dam. With spectacular sunset views, it is a perfect place to relax and wind up the day.

• The coracle ride costs about INR 350 to 500 per person for 30 minutes.
• Watch out for otters. I saw a couple of them.

Cafes of Hampi

Mango tree café.

One of the most famous cafes in Hampi, right next to Virupaksha temple, is the Mango Tree café. The ambience, staff and the food are all very nice. I visited this café several times and had a great time each time.

Whispering Café

A very chilled-out and unique café is the Whispering café. It is on the other side of the Tundabhadra river in Anegundi. The seating arrangement is on the floor with beds everywhere, providing a very relaxed atmosphere. The food is delicious and keeps up the mark, too.

Shopping in Hampi

Banana fibre products.

I accidentally discovered the banana fibre products in Anegundi. The local women of the village have been employed to make banana fibre products such as handbags, bowls and toys. This is to provide employment to the women and empower them.

The ropes are created using banana stems. And these ropes are, in turn, used to weave and make products. A lot of manual effort and hours go into making a single product. Even though the products are a bit expensive as they are manually made, they are beautiful and worth buying.

Hampi Bazaar

Hampi Bazaar is a popular store where auto drivers take visitors for shopping. They have a variety of products, including special oils and scarves. The banana fibre products are also sold here but at an elevated price. Hampi Bazaar is great for buying souvenirs and other things, as everything is available under one roof.

Local shops

Hampi has a lot of local shops that sell souvenirs, clothes, books and other things. The shopkeepers sell the products at a higher price, so ensure to haggle.

Traveling within Hampi

The best way to commute is by hiring a two-wheeler. However, there is only one bike rental company in Kamlapura, as the government have stopped all the other bike rental companies. The guy renting out the bike at Kamlapura is arrogant, so I decided to commute to Hampi in an auto-rickshaw.

I was in touch with many auto drivers but used the services from Anil Kumar (picture below). He was very friendly and knowledgeable. I liked the way he managed and took care of me. I highly recommend him for travelling to Hampi.

Stay in Hospete and Hampi

I have listed the below accommodation options sorted by cost (descending from expensive to budgeted).

Evolve Back Luxury Resort

The most expensive of all the options mentioned is the stay at Evolve Back Luxury Resort . Located 4 kilometres from Hampi, the Evolve Back Luxury Resort is a mini Hampi, replicating the entrances, stone-paved boulevards and hallways.

• The cost for a room is around INR 25,000 to 28,000 per night.

Vijayashree Resort and Heritage Village

The second time I visited Hampi, I stayed at Vijayashree Resort and Heritage Village . Spreading across 20 acres of land, this property is located about 20 kilometres from Hampi. The rooms are spacious and well-maintained. It is a beautiful place to stay if you have your vehicle to commute to Hampi. Even though I enjoyed my stay, I did not cherish the food. I felt the food was limited and tasteless.

• The cost for a room is around INT 5000 to 7000 per night.

Gopi Guest House

If you are a budgeted traveller, staying in Hampi is the best choice. Gopi Guest House is right next to Virupaksha temple and is a great place to stay. The room is small, but the guest house is very conveniently located.

• The cost for a room is around INR 750 to 900 per night.

Pushpa Guest House

Pushpa guest house is cheaper than the Gopi guest house. It is a small place where backpackers or budgeted travellers can stay at affordable prices. It is also conveniently located near Virupaksha temple.

• The cost for a room is around INR 500 to 750 per night.

How to Get to Hampi?

Hampi does not have an airport of its own. The nearest domestic airport is at Bellary. The Bellary airport is around 60 kilometres from Hampi.

Hampi is around 340 kilometres from Bangalore, and it takes about 6 hours by road to reach Hampi. The route has toll roads and is towards Nelmangala.

• Note: Only yellow-plate vehicles are allowed inside Hampi.

By Public Transport

Hospete is the closest town that is accessible by public transportation. Hospete is around 20 kilometres from Hampi. Many trains and buses operate between Bangalore and Hospete.

Is Hampi Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Hampi is very safe for solo female travellers. I travelled to the place alone during my second visit, and all the people were friendly and nice. However, I had a problem at the Hospete bus stop, where a man tried to make unnecessary gestures. I complained to the person at the information desk, after which I was made to sit in the office till my bus arrived. In Karnataka, if you have a problem, the best solution is to be vocal about it so the people around you can help you out in the situation.

This is useful to inform the emergency services in case of any emergency. If you are a tourist, always have good comprehensive travel insurance to cover yourself in case of any emergency.

The historical monument, also a UNESCO heritage site, is lit up in tri-color to celebrate the glorious 75 years of Independence. The illumination will be till 15’th August 2022 and entry to the monument is free.

Set in an awesome boulder-strewn landscape along the banks of the Tungabhadra River, Hampi was the capital city of the magnificent capital of the mighty Vijayanagara Empire. Founded by Harihara and Bukka in 1336, it fell to the Muslim rulers of the Deccan in 1565, and the city was pillaged over a period of six months before being abandoned. The once-proud city of victory is now a city of desolation. However, the ruins of these historical monuments have withstood the ravages of man and time, and still evoke memories of the grandeur of a bygone era.

Classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, this historic town is also the “ World’s Largest Open-air Museum ” and covers an area of nearly 29 sq km. Vijayanagara Empire at its peak was very prosperous and was believed to be larger than Rome with palaces grander than of Lisbon  “ The city is such that the pupil of the eye has never seen a place like it, and the ear of intelligence has never been informed that there existed anything to equal it in the world ”, marvelled a 15th century Persian ambassador Abdul Razaak. There were opulent palaces, marvelous temples, massive fortifications, baths, markets, aquaducts, pavilions, stables for royal elephants, and elegantly carved pillars. This was a city whose merchants traded in diamonds, pearls, horses, fine silks and brocades.

Most of the important structures and ruins are located in two areas, which are generally referred to as the Royal Centre and the Sacred Centre. The Royal Centre in the south-west part of the site contains structures that seem to have been palaces, baths, pavilions, royal stables and temples for ceremonial use. The Sacred Centre stretches around the Virupaksha Temple and the Hampi Bazaar area and is along the banks of the holy Tungabhadra River.  

The ruins of Hampi are extensive and fascinating enough to absorb your attention for several days.

The best way to experience this UNESCO World Heritage Site is to take a leisurely stroll through the eloquent ruins or take a bicycle/ bike ride. If you are hard-pressed for time, a day or two will suffice to see all the important structures. However, photography, archaeology buffs, yoga enthusiasts should plan on staying a little longer.

21. Big Shivalinga

One of the major tourist spots in Hampi, the big Shivalinga is the symbol of Lord Shiva.  The unique feature of this Shivalinga is that even in spite of its magnanimous size, this structure was carved out of a single boulder. As tall as 3 meters, this Shivalinga now stands amidst water in the sanctum of the temple.

Top 5 places to visit in Hampi on your first trip to the glorious historical site

A trip to Hampi is a pre-requisite for anyone nurturing an ardent love for Indian history and architectural marvels from another time.

This rich historical site, which is touted as the world’s largest open-air museum, is a treasure trove of temples, sculptures and endless ruins, dripping with stories of the many changes it witnessed and endured through the ages.

From once being part of the glorious Vijayanagara Empire to being reduced to ruins and rubble following the invasion by the Deccan Sultanates, Hampi is an open book of splendid stories just waiting to be read and seen by people, especially history buffs.

Planning a trip to Hampi requires a bit of research as you need to know about the places to visit, given the site can take over two days to be explored in its entirety.

Naturally, one must try and cover as many locations as you can when visiting; however, the following are the 5 spots at the historical site one must absolutely visit, especially if you are visiting for the first time:

1. Sri Virupaksha Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Sri Virupaksha Temple is easily one of the oldest and most exquisite places to visit in Hampi. Built in the 7th century, the Hindu temple is still functional and is one of the oldest living temples in India.

“Hiring a tour guide was the best decision I made on the trip because the stories and details he told us were simply mindblowing. The stone that this temple is made of is so beautiful that it appeared to be changing colours on its own throughout the day,” Sumit Madhavan, a 25-year-old engineer from Kerala who visited the site last month, tells South First .

“A fascinating detail the guide showed us was a sort of inverted shadow that was created on the temple wall, where the shadow of the highest gopuram was visible in an inverted form, through a little hole. The intentional purpose of this design makes one wonder about the amazing brilliance of the craftsmen from those days. You just have to see this for yourself,” Madhavan adds.

He shared another amazing feature to check out — the underwater Shiva Temple, where the inner sections of the shrine are always filled with water. However, tourists can only visit inside during the summer months, as people are not allowed in during the monsoon months from August to October as the water level is high at the time.

The inner sanctum remains submerged throughout the year.

2. vijaya vittala temple, one of the important places in hampi that you must visit.

One of the most famous temples and places to visit in Hampi is the Vijaya Vittala Temple. An architectural masterpiece, it is one of the largest historical structures in Hampi, dedicated to Lord Vishnu’s incarnation, Lord Vittala.

At the premises of the temple, you will find unparalleled craftsmanship of the Vijayanagara Empire in the form of the iconic stone chariot, sculptures with intricate designs, the legendary musical pillars and peaceful temple halls. These are some of the many features that you just can’t miss.

“The best decision I made was to come here in the early hours as the absolute lack of people elevated the beauty of the place and I felt like I was walking in a world from another time altogether,” Madhavan says.

“The endless carvings at the bottom part of the Maha Mantapa which, according to the guide, depict life from 500 years ago, was unbelievable. You can see traders doing their business and people going on with their lives in the carvings. But what left me stunned were the depictions of traders from Europe and other parts of the world, clearly indicating how the magnificent Vijayanagara Empire was flourishing in trade with the rest of the world,” he adds.

The Vittala Temple lies partially ruined, as the central western hall of the temple was ruined long ago during the invasion by the Deccan Sultanates that led to the downfall of the Vijayanagara Empire in 1565 CE.

3. Tungabhadra Gardens and Dam

Located about 5 km from Hospet, the Tungabhadra gardens and dam are worth a visit in Hampi. Besides being an absolute visual feast, the dam is central to Hampi as it caters to almost every crucial function, including electricity generation and irrigation.

“It’s a good thing I came alone here because the amount of walking I did, my old parents would never be able to keep up. I managed to walk all the top of the way to the dam and the view was unbelievable. Felt like I was in a movie! I came to the location at the end of my trip after visiting the ruins and it was the perfect spot for me to unwind, relax and absorb all the historic richness I has witnessed earlier at the architectural marvels of Hampi,” Vineesha Podwal from Maharashtra who made a solo trip to the location tells South First .

4. Lakshmi Narasimha Temple

Touted to be one of the most imposing sculptures in Hampi, the Lakshmi Narasimha statue is the largest monolith statue in the archaeological site. The Lakshmi Narasimha Temple, also called Ugra Narasimha (i.e. Narasimha in its terrifying form) houses the brilliant and striking statue of Lord Narasimha, who is the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, and portrayed as a half lion and half human sitting in a cross-legged position with a fierce expression.

Built in 1528 CE and standing about 6.7 meters tall, the original sculpture also had a small figure of Goddess Lakshmi sitting on Narasimha’s lap, however, the statue was vandalised during the invasion by the Deccan Sultanates in 1565 CE. This is definitely among the top places to visit in Hampi.

“My camera almost ran out of battery as I ended up taking countless pictures of the temple complex. The terrifying statue of the Narasimha staring right into my soul with his bulging eyes is a sight I will never forget. What I really can’t believe is that such a huge sculpture was made from a single granite boulder. Clearly, the craftsmen from that era were already way ahead of their time,” Podwal says.

5. Riverside Ruins, a lesser-known place in Hampi empty of visitors

Offering a one-of-a-kind experience, the Riverside ruins can end up surprising many tourists who probably won’t expect to see statues and ancient architectural structures scattered on the banks of the Tungabhadra river.

“On the second day of my trip, I overheard about the over a thousand linga statues lying in a cluster on the riverside gorge just north of the Kodandarama Temple, and I knew I just had to see it for myself. I was taken completely by surprise because I had never read about this, nor did I hear tourists discuss this place while mentioning their travels to Hampi,” recalls Madhavan.

“As I explored the area close to the edge of the river, I saw the many Lingas carved onto a flat rock surface. And a bit further on another rock surface, I saw the carved sculpture of Lord Vishnu in a reclined position. Saying that my mind was blown is an understatement,” he adds about what he discovered as he explored the Riverside Ruins.

This location is rather isolated compared to the other attractions in Hampi, ergo the area appears to be practically empty of the throng of tourists at times.

A few metres from the riverside, one can then proceed to the narrowest portions of the river. And given the slippery rock surfaces which are close to the torrents, tourists are cautioned by the guides to never venture into the waters, whatsoever.

“Since the river was not turbulent at the time, I reached the location on a hired coracle ride and got a much closer look at the Shiva Linga site. It was so calm and serene. This was the perfect ending to my trip,” Madhavan adds.

How to reach Hampi

Air: Ballari (Bellary) is the closest town to Hampi to have an airport. You can reach Ballari by local transportation.

Rail: The nearest railway station can be found in Hosapete (Hospet), which is situated around 10 km from Hampi.

Road: Locals suggest boarding a bus from Hosapete to Hampi, calling it the easiest way. Also, tourists can travel by car if they are arriving from Mysuru or Bengaluru.

The best time to visit Hampi is between November and February — and keep in mind, December and January are the peak traffic months. Tourists should try and avoid summers to visit as it gets exceptionally hot and there is a lot of walking to do, so it’s not ideal.
