Increased passenger traffic and the decision, last year, by three major cruise lines – Norwegian, Carnival and Royal Caribbean – to enter the stock market, point to just how popular cruise ships have become. The Cruise Line Industry Association recently reported a record 27.8 million passengers are forecast to take a cruise this summer, an increase of almost ten million over the past decade.

Cruises have become a popular holiday option and the ultimate symbol of a carefree lifestyle that is now being celebrated by the fashion industry, which often uses these ships to host fashion events.

Often praised for the aura of glamour and entertainment that surrounds it, MSC Divina is a majestic vessel housing 1,571 staterooms across 14 of its 18 decks.

Inspired by Italian actress Sophia Loren, the ship boasts some of the most luxurious interiors in the industry, offering a real stone piazza, a Casino Veneziano and Broadway-style Pantheon theatre.

Divina also has a spa, lavish restaurants and spaces designed to sparkle and shine Sophia Loren-style. Adorned with glittery chandeliers and exotic furniture, the ship’s hall welcomes passengers with a glittering staircase made of Swarovski crystals.

Oceania’s Marina

Boasting artwork by international artists on its walls and six open-eating gourmet restaurants, Oceania Cruises’ Marina is a sight for sore eyes.

Travellers who choose it will be blinded by the ship’s imposing entrance hall, which was commissioned by French glass and jewellery designers Lalique.

Ralph Lauren Home furnishing can be found in the three 2,000ft 2 Owner’s Suites, where floors have mosaic tiles and the walls are lined with cashmere and mahogany.

Uniworld’s S.S. Maria Theresa

The S.S. Maria Theresa is a 443ft-long vessel dedicated to Austrian empress Maria Theresa and Vienna’s royal palace.

Tributes to the empress can be found in every corner of the ship, which has been decorated in 18 th century style and features golden chandeliers and marble staircases, as well as a large-scale portrait of Maria Theresa herself.

Staterooms boast lavish padded fabric wall coverings, period-style furnishings and English Savoir beds draped in Egyptian cotton bed linens.

Norwegian’s Bliss

Launched in summer 2018, Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Bliss is one of the most extravagant cruise liners in the world.

Alongside offering luxurious staterooms with a personal butler service, the Norwegian Bliss has two observation lounges where passengers can relax and hope to see whales and dolphins.

The vessel has a two-level Go-Kart track where guests can reach speeds of 30mph and multi-level water slides, as well as a laser tag room.

Quantum of the Seas

Royal Caribbean’s Quantum of the Seas is famous for housing $5m worth of artwork spread around its 16 passenger decks. Here, holidaymakers can find a 30ft-tall pink polar bear, a series of design elements called ‘What Makes Life Worth Living’, and the North Star, a glass capsule rising 300ft above sea level that provides a 360° view of the surroundings.

The ship’s entertainment rooms are illuminated by flashy neon lights and feature a modern, sometimes almost futuristic decor. Staterooms vary in size and location; of the 2,090 available, 375 have a virtual balcony, which appears on a wall thanks to 80-inch screens connected to a live camera outside the ship.

Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer

Regent’s Seven Seas Explorer is a glamorous cruise vessel mainly covering routes in northern Europe.

Luxury dominates the Explorer ’s common areas, which feature 5,000 chandeliers, lavish furniture and 2,200 pieces of art, including a Chagall and some Picassos that can be found at the entrance to the Regent Suite.

Housing an in-room spa, a 958ft 2  balcony and an ocean-view shower, the Regent Suite is furnished with Murano glass bowls and a limited-edition Steinway Arabesque piano designed by Dakota Jackson.

Uniworld’s S.S. Joie de Vivre

Celebrating Paris’s most florid period, the years between the 1920s and the 1960s, Uniworld’s S.S. Joie de Vivre can host up to 128 passengers and travels on the Seine between the French capital and Normandy.

The interiors are a tribute to the ville lumière and its most traditional hotspots, including a typical sidewalk café serving classic French cuisine.

The rooms feature handcrafted furniture and antiques, original artwork and plush fabrics. Art trends from different decades blend on the walls and floors of the dining areas.

Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge

Set to make its inaugural trip in December 2018, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge is a vessel of mammoth dimensions.

Designed by renowned architects, including Tom Wright, Kelly Hoppen and Patricia Urquiola, the ship has a terrace lounge, the Eden, which connects three decks through a 300ft-long ramp.

Measuring almost 370,000ft 3 , the lounge is bigger than New York’s Hayden Planetarium and larger than Van Gogh Museum’s atrium in Amsterdam.

The vessel hosts a spa with floating basket chairs and a Turkish bath decked out in marble and mosaic tiles. Its AquaClass staterooms feature the latest technology: with the touch of a button, the doors of the room fold away and the entire living space becomes a balcony.

Cunard’s MS Queen Elizabeth

The youngest of Cunard’s Queen fleet, the Queen Elizabeth offers a range of itineraries departing from Southampton, including trips to the Baltic region, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

Launched in 2010, the vessel was designed in Art Deco style and is embellished with wood panelling, chandeliers and marble flooring. Particularly famous are the sumptuous Royal Arcade and Royal Court Theatre, as well as the library, which is spread over two decks linked by a wooden spiral staircase.

Seabourn’s Encore

The interiors of Seabourn’s Encore are the work of hospitality designer Adam Tihany, who decorated them in a baroque, curve-celebrating style.

Swirls and circles dominate aboard the ship, which was inaugurated in January 2017 in Singapore and given a yacht-like profile through the use of dark tones, in particular blues and browns.

The vessel has six different types of luxury suites all featuring a spacious living room, breath-taking glass door views and dedicated personnel.

FEATURE | The cruise ship interiors industry: Where are we now and where are we going?

cruise liner interiors international

Countries across the globe may be anticipating economic dips, but the cruise industry is one area that’s still going strong despite financial uncertainty sweeping the globe.

We know that cruise is the fastest growing segment of the leisure travel market, with more than 26 million passengers taking a cruise in 2018*, but what impact is the increasing number of passengers having on the cruise market as a whole? And more specifically, how are cruise lines, shipyards, and designers handling the increase in demand?

The cruise industry is booming, but does it have the resources to handle it?

Speaking at Cruise Ship Interiors Expo 2019 in Miami, consultant at Royal Caribbean Cruises Stephen T. Fryers told an attentive audience, “the industry is buoyant”. But what did he mean? Although the cruise industry’s supposed buoyancy may be causing nothing but glee for suppliers and designers whose respective order books are filled to the brim with upcoming projects, shipyards could find themselves struggling to keep up with the demand.

Passengers’ ever-evolving needs and wants have meant cruise lines are continually striving to provide exceptional design and guest experiences, which in turn has led to an increase in not only newbuild projects, but also revitalisation and refurbishments as cruise lines look to harmonise existing ships across their fleets.

According to MSC Cruises’ vice president of newbuilding Trevor Young, the four major shipyards have almost doubled their capacity within the past five to 10 years in order to keep up with the growing demand.

Though cruise lines may be excited by the booming industry, there’s no doubt the demand may lead to issues in the future. A booming order book could mean smiles all around for the time being, but resources in the industry are limited. Again, speaking at Cruise Ship Interiors Expo, vice president of vessel refurbishment at Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Colin Gant commented, “[Newbuilds and refurbishments are] leaning on the same resources. It’s an interesting dynamic.”

The resources Gant is referring to not only involve the shipyards and their limited capacity, but also the exhaustive pool of talent that shipyards must pull from. A key challenge that lies ahead for the cruise industry will be to entice more people to undertake careers in the shipbuilding industry, or ships of the future may not be built at all.

The increased demand has already seen shipyards extend their drydocking periods, with ships undergoing drydocks in June, which until recently was unprecedented. Striving to keep up with cruise lines’ demand has meant shipyards have no choice but to extend their window of time in order to take on more orders.

New players, new materials

Luckily, the number of vendors entering the cruise market is on the up too, with yet more suppliers providing IMO-certified materials for cruise lines to contract. In the past, cruise lines and designers had the choice of just a handful of materials, given the stringent industry standards that suppliers must abide by, but now the market is filled with brands hoping to supply lightweight and industry-certified products to the world’s leading cruise lines.

If we look at the options that have become available in the past few years alone, with the likes of companies like Bolidt providing sustainable and lightweight alternatives to existing materials such as authentic teak wood with its Bolideck Future Teak composite, carpet suppliers Dansk Wilton introducing reused carpet materials, and Shores Global recycling wasted ocean plastic into a new furniture item in the form of the Ocean Chair.

Additionally, brands who have traditionally only operated in the landside hospitality market are now making their way into cruise, such as Dyson, which is set to attend more industry events with the hopes of integrating its hand dryers onboard more seagoing vessels in the future.

Not only are existing cruise lines and their vessels looking to undergo more refits and newbuilds, we’ve also seen an increasing number of new names entering the market, with the likes of Virgin Voyages and the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection hoping to shake things up and attract different demographics than the existing 50+ age bracket.

The increase of new players may have breathed some new life into the industry (it’s been said time and again that the cruise industry is a bubble in which everyone knows each other), but it’s also contributing to shipyards’ capacities. Now, the cruise line order book is packed as far ahead as 2027, which is why we may be seeing an increase in refits, since they take less time (and as importantly, less money) to complete.

Some cruise lines have taken matters into their own hands, with Genting buying its own shipyard in which to create new ships and bypassing the emerging shipbuilding delay in the process. Although that’s certainly a costly solution to what could be just a short-term issue, and one that few cruise lines are likely to follow.

A brand approach

Industry veterans might be tired of the comparison, but it’s hard not to relate land-based hospitality with the cruise market. The relationship between the two may be veering more towards the side of co-dependency, but it seems cruise is still taking notes from its land-based counterpart.

More and more the cruise market reflects trends we’ve seen in hotels, especially when it comes to branding and providing more of a lifestyle approach. What we’ve seen with new players, such as Virgin Voyages, is a willingness to create a holistic brand experience: going on a Virgin cruise isn’t just a holiday, it’s a lifestyle choice.

Given the overly saturated market, it makes sense that cruise lines would want to provide clear distinction between each brand. Again, however, this means revitalising old ships with contemporary designs and even introducing new vessels to reflect the brand’s ethos and image, once more putting pressure on shipyards to fulfil orders.

As ships continue to become a destination in themselves, rather than a mere mode of transport, the excitement and innovation factor must be upped. In such a fast-paced industry, it’s hard to tell what the future might hold. What we do know, however, is that the cruise market shows no signs of slowing down.

As it continues to provide families with good value holidaying options, it’s the closest thing to recession-proof the leisure travel market seems to have. With the newbuild order book cemented for the next 10 years, it looks like cruise is safe for the foreseeable future, though what’s to be done about the industry’s limited resources, including space and talent, is another question.

Inspired by Nature: Expedition Cruise Interiors

Embarking on an expedition cruise is the closest you can get to nature on a cruise ship. Voyages on the most innovative new cruise ships take explorers to the farthest reaches of the globe, from the Galapagos to the Antarctic. These destinations can aid the cruise interior designer in their creative choices, forming a ‘natural mood board’ for the designer to use. Famous examples of ‘biomimicry’ or ‘biomimetic design’ include the Shinkansen bullet train, inspired by the beak of a Kingfisher; Velcro, inspired by the way burs stuck to the hair of the designers’ dog; and anti-drag materials inspired by shark skin. So how have interior designers in the cruise industry used the natural world in their works? Below we take a look at some examples of how expedition cruise interiors have been inspired by nature…

Silversea Silver Origin

The new Silver Origin from Silversea was designed with the Galapagos in mind. Designed by GEM Design, headed up by Cruise Ship Interiors Award winner Giacomo Mortola, and HBA Miami, Silver Origin combines local knowledge with luxury to create the cruise lines’ first ever destination-specific ship.

Silversea say that Silver Origin will “take influence from the Galapagos’ unique natural environment to strengthen guests’ engagement with the destination, with each space enhancing the experience.” This is clear in the Observation Lounge, which features floor-to-ceiling windows in an effort to ‘bring the outside in’.

cruise liner interiors international

The Basecamp on Silver Origin , a pre-and-post-excursion lounge area, features decorative glass cabinets containing flora and fauna of the Islands, as well as a large, interactive digital wall to enhance the guest learning experience.

“Bright, colourful motifs and regional materials will accentuate the design.”

The interiors are very refined, in the understated, luxurious, Italian way the rest of the Silversea fleet is. The Explorer Lounge features an interesting slatted wood ceiling, as is popular in contemporary hospitality design .

Hapag-Lloyd Hanseatic Nature & Inspiration

Hapag-Lloyd’s two new Hanseatic ships Nature and Inspiration, named after the original 5-star Hanseatic which left the fleet in 2018, cater to a German and International crowd for worldwide expedition cruises.

Built to be a mixture between comfort and adventure, the two ships have more open deck space than any other expedition ship. Inside the ship, Hapag-Lloyd says the curved lines and natural colours of the cabins and suites are inspired by nature. This is certainly evident in the rooms on board Nature. The colour and material choices in the cabins remind one of a forest, with medium browns and pale greens; the junior suites are more ocean-centric, with a mix of blues and a seaweed-like floor covering; and the Grand Suite opts for a curved marble wall for natural elegance.

cruise liner interiors international

According to a Tui Group press release:

“The design concept, “inspired by nature”, reflects the expeditionary spirit and is the creative idea underpinning both ships. Nature is not only experienced outside, but also is reflected in the interior design. This comes to the fore in the choice of materials, colours and forms, as well as in the contours and lines of walls and surfaces, the lines of sight and therefore the interplay between the interiors and the world outside.”

This design concept is perhaps strongest in the restaurant on board Nature , which uses a motif akin to a leaf under a microscope as decorative dividers, ceiling lighting, and shelving. In the daytime the leaf effect is accentuated by the greens in the flooring and some of the furniture – towards the evening however, the whole restaurant is lit in an other-worldly pink hue, allowing the wooden elements in the wall covering to stand out.

Ponant Le Laperouse Blue Eye

The Blue Eye underwater multisensory lounge on Ponant’s Le Laperouse, designed by Jacques Rougerie and Flamant Interior Design, is inspired primarily by the blue whale. Jacques Rougerie is a biomimetic designer and architect specializing in underwater habitats. For The Blue Eye, the sea was both the inspiration and the centre of focus:

“This inspiration is evident in the lines of the lounge: stripes surrounding the space like whales baleens, curved seats like sea shells, smooth lines of the staircase housing designed like a caudal fin. All focus is drawn towards the two portholes, shaped like the eye of a cetacean and looking out upon the subaquatic world.”

cruise liner interiors international

In addition to the physical design, the space benefits from being a multi-sensory experience. Ponant enlisted the wares of contemporary composer and sound designer Michel Redolfi to develop hydrophones that transmit the natural symphony of the sea into the lounge.

“For a true multi-sensory experience, the sofas integrate some Body Listening fixtures, each discreetly vibrating in unison with the sounds of the ocean to create an underwater encounter guests can see, hear, and feel.”

cruise liner interiors international

It happens naturally

Biomimetic design in the cruise industry doesn’t just take place in the interiors – it’s worth mentioning a ship such as Peace Boat’s new Ecoship, inspired by the shape of a whale and led in design and technology by nature. With the cruise industry in a state of flux as it is now, we expect innovation on all sides to enhance the future of onboard design – and cruise designers and architects will be sure to always keep the organic perfection of the natural world in mind.

You Won't Believe the Interiors of These 10 New Cruise Ships

By Chaney Kwak and Charu Suri

We are entering the Golden Age of cruising, with companies seem continuously engaged in an arms race to outdo one another in design, amenities, and culinary offerings. Last year saw a number of new rarified vessels that ranged from The Strand’s vintage-inspired river ship to Crystal’s 62-person yacht. And this year, several ocean liners are debuting floating oases that range in size, style, and personality. From Silversea's all-suite Silver Muse to Viking’s first foray into round-the-world sailing, here are some of the most visually intriguing new cruise ships.

Princess Cruises

With the rollout of Dr. Michael Breus’s specially designed sleep beds last fall geared to give travelers some plush and comfortable shut-eye, Princess Cruises upped its game and will launch the ship’s official Ocean Medallion (in lieu of key cards) this November on the Regal Princess. Designers Teresa Anderson and Giacomo Mortola worked on the design of the brand’s 17 ships, including the ethereal feel of the marble and glass spiral staircases in the atrium as well as the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright in the décor of the aft dining room. The Regal Princess boasts a cantilevered SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed enclosed walkway on the ship’s starboard side extending more than 28 feet beyond the edge of the vessel. princesscruises.com

CroisiEurope

With 50 ships in the fleet and six barge cruises, the line debuted a year-round cruise from Berlin to the heart of Prague in 2016 with advanced paddle-wheel technology that allows visitors to travel year-round in the lowest water levels of the Elbe. The décor on the six barges is by Missoni Home fabrics, including the dining room, lounge, and staterooms. A brand-new eight-suite ship called the African Dream debuts in December, on the Chobe and Zambezi rivers. croisieuroperivercruises.com

The brand’s new supership, the S.S. Joie de Vivre, launched in the spring through northern France. Designer Toni Tollman from the ship’s sister brand, Red Carnation Hotels, drew inspiration from the elegance of Paris in the 1930s–’50s with accents of handcrafted antique bronze, and staterooms and bathrooms done in a Directoire style with highly grained veneers and decorative painting. The ship's interiors are reminiscent of superyachts around the world, dressed in solid walnut. It has two Royal Suites, eight Junior Suites, and 54 staterooms. uniworld.com

Riviera Travel

The U.K.-based operator launched four ships in 2017, with a fifth debuting in the spring of 2018, which will double the size of its feet. The all-suite MS Emily Brontë, MS Thomas Hardy, MS Oscar Wilde, and MS Robert Burns sail the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers, as well as tributaries, while the Douro Elegance will sail the Douro River. While most of the ships are decked in sustainable hardwoods, gleaming brass and polished copper, sparkling glass, intricate wrought iron, and beautiful illumination, the modern Duoro Elegance was built to fit the size limitations of the river’s five locks, and all its suites feature Juliet balconies. rivieratravel.com

Celebrity Cruises

The Celebrity Edge, which sets sail in December 2018, has a partnership with architects and designers Tom Wright, Kelly Hoppen, and Patricia Urquiola. This is no half-hearted venture: The scale of Eden, measuring 368,640 cubic feet, is bigger than the Hayden Planetarium in New York, and is larger than the Van Gogh Museum atrium in Amsterdam. The dining venue is a tour-de-force, spanning three decks at the aft of the ship with almost 7,000 square feet of glass, and is designed by Urquiola, who makes her design debut at sea. celebritycruises.com/edge

Crystal Cruises

The all-suite Crystal Mozart, billed as the largest vessel yet to sail the European rivers, was designed by London’s AD Associates and Toronto’s II by IV Design . It has a living rooftop garden area with teak benches, and is outfitted in calming foundations of cream, gray, and white accented with jewel tones of deep blue and green. It sails along Europe’s Danube River. The Palm Court acts as the dining venue and as the hub for dancing and live entertainment, and the Vintage Room hosts winemaker dinners. crystalcruises.com

Silversea's Silver Muse

Silversea's newest and biggest ship, the 596-passenger Silver Muse, launched this month. Boasting a nearly one-to-one passenger-to-crew ratio, the vessel’s plush accommodations range all the way up to the Balsorano Owner’s Suite, clocking in at over a thousand square feet with a breezy teak veranda with floor-to-ceiling glass doors. The on-board dining options include La Dame, which serves creations by Relais & Châteaux chefs. silversea.com

Viking Cruises has ventured far from its river cruise origins to launch its first round-the-world, 35-country itinerary this winter. Inside each of the 465 cabins of the ship, you’ll find a spacious veranda, heated bathroom floor tiles, and plush births, all embodying clean-lined Scandinavian aesthetics without clutter. Breaking from its closest relative Sky, the newly christened Viking Sun features an Owner’s Suite that has been reimagined with bleached-wood walls. The vessel’s first-floor spa sticks to the Nordic liner’s success formula of wood sauna and an icy grotto where guests chill—or build a snowman, if they’re so inclined. vikingcruises.com

Seabourn's Encore

Entering service in January this year, Encore is a bit of a contradiction, at once larger than its older siblings but also more intimate and yacht-like, thanks to the interiors by award-winning designer Adam Tihany’s team. The nautical blues, mahogany, and shiny chrome form a palette that extends from the rooms to The Grill by the star chef Thomas Keller. seabourn.com

MSC's Seaside

Launching in December, the Seaside takes a “condo-on-the-beach” approach to the stateroom design, with an outward orientation toward the water. The most noted feature will be its jutting glass-floor catwalks that will simulate the experience of walking over water, in addition to two panoramic glass elevators on the aft of the ship that promis panoramic views of the sea. msccruisesusa.com
