CULINARY THEMED EUROPEAN RIVER CRUISES... Gastronomic delights abound onboard and ashore!

European river cruises featuring exciting food and wine themes are increasingly popular. The key river cruise lines: AmaWaterways , Avalon , Tauck and Uniworld , have a bevy of culinary adventures aboard their luxurious river ships that will entice you and excite your taste buds, and the savoring of gourmet offerings continue ashore in michelin-rated restaurants and in the vineyards of Bordeaux and Burgundy. Food and cooking is a fascinating part of our cultural heritage. What we eat and drink — why and when speaks volumes about where we came from and who we are. Thus, the pairing of fine food and delectable (complimentary) regional wines and beers aboard a luxurious European river cruise ship is the perfect marriage of a rewarding culinary experience and a wonderful experiential river cruise vacation to Europe and our roots. River cruise cuisine is inspired by the season and region you’re visiting. All meals are prepared daily using the finest fresh ingredients, often selected from local farmers the same day you enjoy them. Menus aboard river ships change daily and are designed to offer guests a variety of choices. In addition to the daily menu there’s always fresh fish, western-style steak and freshly grilled chicken available. Continue reading article below the "GET A QUICK QUOTE" section.

Flavours for Foodies: A Culinary Guide to European River Cruises

Dining Culinary River Cruise Ships Europe Uniworld AmaWaterways Viking

Photo: Uniworld

Sweet, sour, salty, bitter, savory. Guests will find all of the culinary flavours, expertly curated and prepared, on European river cruises. Food, wine, spirits - and the influence of the local culture upon those delectable regional tastes - are all integral parts of the experience while plying Europe’s famous rivers.

At ASTA’s 2022 Global River Cruise Expo in Budapest in March, most of the river cruise brands had ships lined up along the banks of the Danube, open for inspections by travel advisors and to sample lunches and dinners onboard. Overall, participants we spoke to at the event were delighted with the cuisine and the service.

All of the major river cruise lines tout meals prepared with local ingredients that reflect the authentic tastes of the regions through which they sail. Beyond that commonality, there are some notable differences. Here is an overview of the culinary offerings on European river cruises, both onboard and during excursions.

Amadeus River Cruises One of the culinary highlights on Amadeus is the line’s fresh-baked bread, according to a spokesperson. “Every morning, before dawn breaks the horizon, bakers all over Europe begin their day by preparing bread dough and honoring age-old traditions that have been distinctly tied to their region’s heritage for centuries. Bauernbrot. Kaiser rolls. Pumpernickel. Croissant. Brioche. These recipes have been passed from generation to generation, and over the years, very little has changed. Onboard every Amadeus river cruise ship, our bakers are hard at work doing exactly the same … representing our European heritage, customs, and culture.”

Onboard meals are mainly taken in the elegant Panorama-Restaurant, including an impressive breakfast, a lunchtime buffet, and a fine-dining, 5-course evening menu. An alternative light lunch is also offered in the Amadeus Salon. Of note is Café Vienna, daily turning out scrumptious homemade cakes, tarts, and imaginative desserts in a traditional Austrian style. Would you expect anything less from a river cruise line with a patisserie onboard?

During optional shore excursions, Amadeus offers tastings of regional cheeses, wines, chocolates, and beers; as well as seasonal samplings such as gingerbread, gluhwein, or almond cookies during Advent/Christmas. Chef-guided market adventures are also recommended adventures. “We believe to understand a destination is to experience how their cuisine is shopped for, how it is prepared and eaten, and how it inspires,” said the line’s representative. “Join an Amadeus chef on a unique visit to the local farmer’s market while in some select ports. Get new insight on the importance of choosing the right products and produce, and enjoy sample tastings for some specialties.” These chef-guided experiences are currently offered: Amsterdam Dappermarkt, Vienna Maschmarkt, Nurnberg Hauptmarkt, Budapest Markthalle, Cologne Senf (Mustard) Museum, Cochem Senf (Mustard) Museum, Bernkastel Sausage Walk, and Regensburg Sausage Walk.

AmaWaterways A standout feature of the dining experience on AmaWaterways is The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant featuring a multi-course tasting menu. During this intimate, gastronomic experience, guests have the opportunity to join together with fellow epicurean travelers to observe the chef cooking in an exhibition kitchen. Private and secluded from the rest of the ship, dining at The Chef’s Table requires no additional cost, only a reservation.

A multi-course, fine-dining menu is also served every night in the main dining room, while lighter meals are available from the Bistro and Tapas menus offered in the lounge. Exclusive to the revolutionary AmaMagna are two additional dining venues: Al Fresco Restaurant, featuring vegetable-forward dishes enjoyed along with spectacular views of the Danube; and Jimmy’s, a relaxed, family-style restaurant.

“We pride ourselves in offering authentic and personalized culinary experiences that immerse our guests in the flavours and culture of the destinations we sail through,” said Rudi Schreiner, co-founder and president of AmaWaterways. “ My wife Kristin Karst – who co-founded AmaWaterways with me in 2002 – and I both originate from Europe and collaborate personally with our dynamic Culinary Director Robert Kellerhals to evolve our exceptional dining experiences incorporating healthy choices and visually stunning presentations. Our award-winning culinary team ensures each onboard meal is prepared with passion and love, taking advantage of the freshest seasonal ingredients sourced from the surrounding local communities.”

Beyond the onboard experience, culinary-inspired guests can choose from a diverse selection of locale-immersive shore excursions that include such experiences as learning how to shape the perfect bretzel (German for pretzel) at a Germany bakery; visiting a local home for a demonstration of making traditional Bulgarian Banitsa pastries; and enjoying a Dutch beer tasting and Belgian chocolate and waffle tasting.

Wine-themed European sailings are also offered, which include special tours, tastings, wine pairing dinners and interactive discussions. More than 60 departures are planned in 2022 for the line’s “ Celebration of Wine Cruises ” hosted by North American and European wine experts. Guests will enjoy private cellar tours, visits to iconic vineyards, hidden hotspots for tastings, and authentic encounters with local vintners. These enhanced epicurean experiences are included in the price of the cruise.

Avalon Waterways The Avalon Fresh menu is a distinctive feature on Avalon Waterways. “Turning the table on cruise dining,” it provides guests with heart-healthy artisanal dishes. Brothers Karl and Leo Wrenkh, raised in the first high-quality vegetarian restaurant in Austria and founders of the Wrenkh Vienna Culinary School, created the Avalon Fresh menu so guests can partake in regional delicacies while remaining true the healthy-habits regime they may follow at home.

Restaurants onboard include: The Panorama Dining Room, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (dinner includes 4- and 5-course meals); The Panorama Bistro, open for dinner and offering a tapas-type tasting menu; and The Sky Grill, open at lunch when sailing and weather permits, offering grilled foods. On-shore Discovery excursions include such culinary adventures as: Shaking it up at a cocktail workshop in Palais Benedictine where the world-famous liqueur is made; whipping up sweet Chantilly cream at the even sweeter Chantilly Castle; discovering the art of French cooking, sans Julia, in Lyon while learning how to make a Lyonnaise specialty; and enjoying an out-of-your-shell experience at an oyster farm in the Camargue National Park to taste the French delicacy and learn how it is farmed. Avalon also offers beer-, wine- and culinary-themed cruises for dedicated connoisseurs or those wishing to expand their food-and-drink horizons.

CroisiEurope CroisiEurope has one restaurant onboard, but it promises to delight its guests with sophisticated French fare.

“CroisiEurope's greatest asset is the fine French gastronomy served onboard. Meals are created by the company's head chef, Alain Bohn, member of the esteemed French association Maîtres Cuisiniers de France, which includes only 250 chefs from all over the world, and the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs since 2013,” said Michael Da Costa, general manager, CroisiEurope North America. “With his team of chefs, he creates each of the menus in the pure tradition of French gastronomy while bringing out the local tastes and flavours of the regions and countries crossed. The wines served on board are specially selected to accompany each meal and menus can be adapted for people with allergies or those with specific dietary restrictions.”

During excursions on CroisiEurope's “ All the Must-See Sites on the Rhone ” cruise, guests are treated to two meals at restaurants from the iconic French Chef Paul Bocuse: Abbaye de Collonges and Les Halles de Lyon. Beyond these gastronomic highlights, guests on this itinerary discover Valrhona chocolate and lavender honey.

The line also offers a number of culinary-themed cruises, such as: 1)“ Grand Gastronomic Cruise on the Rhine ” - Enthusiasts of fine dining and wine embark on a cruise with Marc Haeberlin, a 2-star awarded French chef in the Michelin guide (2021), and Serge Dubs, the Alsace-born best sommelier in Europe and the World from 1974 to 1989; 2) “ Exceptional Wine Tasting Cruise in Burgundy ” - For wine lovers, the Saône offers many wonders including the prestigious Burgundy city of Beaune, the impressive ruins of the Cluny Abbey, and the Beaujolais Route, with the highlight of this cruise being an exceptional evening in Beaujeu to greet the annual release of Beaujolais Nouveau; and 3) “ Alsace: Land of Tradition and Gastronomy ” - Discover Alsace, the land of tradition and gastronomy, located in the heart of Europe, visiting the must-see places of this charming region while discovering its gastronomic specialties.

Riviera River Cruises The culinary highlight on Riviera River Cruises is the splendid 4-course dinner served each night in the main restaurant: entrée, soup, main, and dessert, all in the elegant ambience of a first-class restaurant. Toward the end of every cruise, the captain also hosts a Captain's Dinner with an extended menu of six elaborate courses and the chef preparing signature dishes of the countries and regions visited.

In addition, the more intimate Riverview Kitchen is located at the stern and seats no more than 28 guests. On cruises on the Seine and Rhône rivers in France, classic charcuterie, regional cheeses and traditional boulangerie are available; while classic European dishes are served on Rhine and Danube cruises, all accompanied by wonderful vistas.

"Guests aboard our ships will find a variety of fine dining experiences waiting to be savored. These range from the 4-course dinners featuring international specialties and dishes inspired by the countries and regions we're cruising through, to the more intimate stern restaurants with open kitchens, large panoramic windows and al fresco seating, to more lavish dinners hosted by the captain of the ship at the end of every cruise and over the Christmas and New Year's holidays," said Marilyn Conroy, Riviera River Cruises’ executive vice president sales and marketing North America.

As for culinary experiences during excursions, “The Douro, Porto & Salamanca” river cruise includes a port wine tasting in Porto, lunch with a traditional flamenco performance in Salamanca, and a dinner at Quinta da Pacheca (which dates to the 18th century). “The Burgundy, the River Rhône & Provence” itinerary includes a wine tasting in Beaune, Burgundy's wine capital. Also, optional "Personalize Your Vacation" excursions include a wine tasting in the Moselle Valley on the “Rhine & Moselle” itinerary; and a wine tasting and local delicacies at a Slovak chalet on “The Danube's Imperial Cities & Yuletide Markets” river cruise.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours Tom Goetter, Iron Chef finalist and disciple of French Laundry, is Scenic's executive chef and oversees the fleet’s culinary efforts, which boasts a total of 2,500 recipes across all of its restaurants.

This river cruise line gives guests an impressive six choices for dining experiences. Portobello is a 25- to 30-seat fine dining venue, located at the bow of ship, offering 4-course, wine-paired meals, prepared in front of the guests. Table la Rive, a 10-seat chef’s table serving 7-course, wine-paired gastronomic treats, is reserved for X level guests and junior suites. The River Café provides lighter fare for guests wishing to have something quick and easy. Rounding out the offerings are the main dining room, an on-deck barbeque (weather permitting), and 24/7 room service.

Wine tastings are a strong draw for guests during excursions. And nearly every sailing has a shop-with-the-chef, on-shore experience. Plus, most of the ships have a Culinaire, a 6-10 person cooking lesson kitchen where the chefs offer lessons in an assortment of recipes.

Scenic has also partnered with Top Chef favorite Brian Voltaggio for a special, culinary-themed departure of their 11-day South of France river cruise in October 2022. “ Spectacular South of France ” sails with Voltaggio roundtrip out of Lyon, exploring many of France’s most food-focused regions along the Rhône River.

Tauck Every Tauck riverboat features the main Compass Rose restaurant offering fine dining, as well as a second and more casual dining venue called Arthur’s (named after Tauck Chairman Arthur Tauck, Jr.), and barbecue grills on the top Sun Deck for fun cookouts on select nights.

But the culinary highlight for guests on a Tauck river cruise is often a special dinner experience off the ship in a truly memorable venue, such as: the Palais Pallavicini (a private palace in Vienna), the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, the Akademia Club in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest, Lobkowicz Palace at Prague Castle in Poland; as well as numerous other chateaux, castles and palaces across Europe. Guests on one Tauck river cruise enjoy a dinner in a decommissioned subterranean salt mine in Poland. Many of these venues are exclusive to Tauck, and all are included in the brand’s cruise prices.

Some of Tauck’s shore excursions might be expected, from a demonstration and tasting of Belgian chocolate in Brussels to wine-tasting excursions in Burgundy, Alsace and Austria’s Wachau Valley. Other culinary experiences might be more unexpected, such as visiting an Absinthe museum in France; tasting apple cider and Calvados along the Seine; enjoying a banquet of Provencal specialties at a private ranch in the Camargue; and sitting down to a 3-course lunch at Munich’s annual Oktoberfest celebration.

In addition, although it is not technically marketed as a culinary cruise, the 10-day “ Savoring France: Paris, Lyon & Provence ” itinerary leans very heavily into French cuisine and local culinary traditions in Paris and along the Rhone.

Uniworld Uniworld recently appointed a new Culinary Director, Robert van Rijsbergen, to manage culinary operations on all of its ships; and assist in the implementation of new food concepts, eco-friendly practices, and menu designs. Starting this season on select cruises, the brand is enhancing its onboard restaurant offerings with a new one-of-a-kind, 4-course private dining experience in the Captain’s Lounge . The highlight of the Uniworld culinary experience is the culinary team’s ability to reflect the dining specialties of the surrounding destinations in which they sail. When in Italy, for example, dinner may consist of Prosciutto di Parma pizza and Osso Buco Milanese, with meats and vegetables sourced from just miles away. Or, after a day immersed in Indian culture, Gajar Shorba and Tandoori Chicken Tikka could be offered as the perfect lunch to end the morning.

Guests looking to experience local culinary practices and dive deeper into local traditions can opt for a “Masterpiece Collection” optional excursion, available for an additional cost, offering experiences from tasting cheese with a cheese affineur in Rüdesheim to cruising through the streets of Bordeaux in a retro sidecar.

For foodies and oenophiles alike, Uniworld offers special culinary-themed cruises centered around the finest of French food and wine through the Connoisseur Collection . During these sailings, guests visit famous restaurants, vineyards, orchards, truffle farms, and other French culinary hot spots. In Bordeaux, they experience Libourne’s lively farmers’ market, where the heart and soul of the region is reflected through the freshest fruits, vegetables, cheeses, and breads. In Normandy, they enjoy le dejeuner at a beautiful baroque castle, Château de Champ de Bataille. The collection of themed cruises includes “ A Portrait of Majestic France ,” “ Brilliant Bordeaux ,” “ Burgundy & Provence ,” “ Grand France ,” and “ Ultimate France .”

Viking Onboard Viking’s river voyages, guests dine at The Restaurant (an upscale dining venue with floor-to-ceiling windows serving multi-course meals featuring regional cuisine) or The Aquavit Terrace (casual, al fresco dining located at the bow of the ship).

The line offers a variety of shore excursions centered around culinary exploration. A few examples include: Flavors of Alsace (Strasbourg, France) - Sample Alsatian and French flavours and pleasures as you meet food merchants, a French sommelier, and a local chef; Historic Farmers Market Visit With Local Chef (Vienna, Austria) - Immerse yourself in culture and cuisine as a leading local chef takes you on an interactive tasting experience; Microbreweries of Bavaria (Regensburg, Germany) - Sample five of Bavaria’s best-loved brews, accompanied by classic biergarten fare; Flavors of Paris (Paris, France) - Enjoy a guided walk through a richly historic quarter steeped in culinary traditions; Graham’s Port Dinner (Lisbon, Portugal) - Visit one of Portugal’s prestigious winemakers for a port tasting and indulge in a traditional Portuguese meal; Heurigen Dinner (Vienna, Austria) - Participate in a high-spirited Heurigen Dinner and toast this year’s wine at a local vineyard, a cherished annual tradition throughout Austria that marks the bottling of the season’s vintage; and Kinderdijk Windmills & Dutch Cheese Making (Kinderdijk, The Netherlands) - See the picturesque Dutch countryside as you explore The Netherlands’ world-famous cheeses and windmills.

While Viking does not offer any culinary-themed itineraries per se, the line recently announced a new post-trip extension entitled “Paris: A Culinary Experience”; available in 2023 for guests sailing on the 8-day “ Paris & the Heart of Normandy ” itinerary, the new extension allows guests to immerse themselves in the culinary history of Paris and taste the gastronomic delights the city has to offer. Additionally, Viking offers a post-trip extension entitled “Great Homes, Gardens & Gin” for guests sailing on the “ British Isles Explorer ” itinerary, where they experience the flavour of English nobility and get an exclusive look at several country estates that have served as the settings of acclaimed PBS and MASTERPIECE productions.

The beautiful blue Danube (port-to-port cruise)

The tour was very good, the crew were excellent, very helpful, approachable and informative and always available. The tours were great and the Danube is wonderful to cruise on. The food was of excellent quality but the fact that there was no choice on the menu was poor and we feel there should have been an earlier sitting for dinner, and lunch could have been a buffet. The accommodation was adequate but the shower was totally inadequate. We enjoyed the cruise

Crosieurope had nice food, plenty of beer and wine, very clean boat - both inside and out. Staff were very nice and helpful, always cleaning windows, carpet, etc. The administration staff were a bit at times disorganised. Sometimes they would forget to give message in English after they delivered Message in French.

Enchanting Danube (2024) (Passau to Budapest, 2024)

This was our first river cruise and everything went beyond our expectation. Services: the staff were accommodating and helpful. Tours: various excursions to choose from for different age group and they were well-organized. Ship: beautiful boutique-design ship. The only cons is a slow Wifi connection but it ain't a big deal. There were so many onboard activity that kept us entertaining. I noticed that the cruise operates in eco-friendly manner, i.e. they eliminates sing-use plastic. That's a big plus!!!!

European river cruises reviews.

Great company to cruise with. Ship carries 110 passengers. Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner each day. Plenty of stops to sightsee. The castles along the Rhine make trip a very enjoyable cruise. All staff were great.
The Wi-Fi didn’t work as expected and it caused quite an inconvenience. The excursion plan is not as clear either. Overall it’s still a good tour but I think my last Danube river with Avalon is better than this rhino river cruise.

15 of the Best European River Cruises

Explore France, Germany, and more on these European river cruises.

gourmet river cruises europe

Much of the appeal of European river cruises, especially as we emerge from the pandemic with pent-up travel demand, is the small size of the ships, casual atmosphere, and accessibility. Unlike oceangoing ships that carry as many as 5,000 passengers, most river cruise ships accommodate around 150 guests, for a more intimate experience. Balconies, floor-to-ceiling windows, and open-air viewing are features of most river cruise ships, and some offer pools, spas, fitness areas, and jogging tracks.

Guests are kept busy (if they wish to be) with daily shore excursions, and most cruises offer several options depending on interests and activity levels. Bikes and walking tours are available in most ports, or guests can choose a leisurely day in a comfortable lounge enjoying the passing scenery.

"River cruises offer opportunities to step ashore in fairy-tale towns and fabled cities. You can immerse yourself in contemporary culture and learn something about the history of the towns along the continent's greatest rivers," according to Ralph Grizzle of River Cruise Advisor . "Sitting on the top deck of a ship under brilliant blue skies, you can gaze on fabled landscapes dotted with castles, villages, and vineyards. A flight of stairs down, and you have all the amenities of a modern hotel—restaurants, bars, fitness facilities, spas, internet access, and comfortable staterooms."

With a number of cruise companies and rivers to choose from, planning a river cruise can take some time. Consulting with a travel advisor is always a good idea, and there's plenty of information available online as well. These are the major companies offering the best European river cruises along with examples of their itineraries.

Perhaps the best known of the river cruise companies, Viking promotes their "longships," which include large suites and inviting verandas for outdoor dining. Guests enjoy Viking's destination-focused dining as well as the variety of staterooms and itineraries with a wide range of prices.

Viking's 10-day "Portugal's River of Gold '' begins in Lisbon with a walking tour through its ancient streets before heading to Porto, home of the country's traditional wine, to board the ship and begin the cruise along the Douro River. Guests can explore Baroque palaces, vineyards, and lush scenery along the way, arriving in the World Heritage city of Salamanca, Spain on day six. Fares include fitness classes, shore excursions, and all dining on board, including The Chef's Table specialty restaurant. New ships debut each year, and the spacious AmaMagna , launched in 2019, is nearly twice the width of traditional European cruise ships.

Wine lovers will want to experience the seven-night "Taste of Bordeaux," with visits to iconic chateaux, timeless vineyards, and delicious wine tastings while cruising the Garonne and Dordogne Rivers. Excursions include a tour of a medieval castle and tasting of Sauternes, a stop in Pauillac, gateway to the Medoc wine region, and a Saint-Emilion tour and tasting. Returning to Bordeaux, guests will explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site and capital of the wine world.

The level of inclusivity varies, with some cruise lines providing comprehensive packages covering meals, beverages, and excursions, while others follow a more à la carte model. Cabin configurations and onboard amenities, including dining options, entertainment, and wellness facilities, also contribute to the overall cruise experience. See inside a new ultra-luxury river cruise line that's charging up to $59,520 per person

  • Newcomer Riverside Luxury Cruises wants to break into the growing river cruise market.
  • The ultra-luxury cruise line  operates former Crystal ships in popular European rivers like the Danube.
  • Riverside's 2024 cruises start at $1,055 per person for four days.

Insider Today

A new ultra-luxury cruise line wants to be the swankiest travel-by-river vacation option.

To do so, it's enticing cruisers with truffle-infused butter, $320-per-person dinners, and butlers that can be beckoned with a simple WhatsApp message.

Affluent travelers , meet Riverside Luxury Cruises.

The budding company first set sail in March 2023. With a year of service under its belt, its three ships are now sailing some of Europe's most popular rivers — starting at more than $260 per person per day.

Riverside is operated by Seaside Collection, a European hotelier.

gourmet river cruises europe

The firm had its sights set on a river cruise venture since 2018, Jen Halboth, CEO of Riverside Luxury Cruises, told Business Insider.

Ironically, COVID-19 was the reason it got into the business.

Crystal Cruises declared bankruptcy in early 2022 amid the pandemic. Shortly after, Seaside purchased and updated five of the then-defunct cruise line's ships.

Three of these vessels now make up Riverside's fleet. The other two are being leased to competitor Uniworld River Cruises.

River cruising has become increasingly popular as wealthy travelers gravitate to ultra-luxury small-ship vacations.

gourmet river cruises europe

River cruise ships are much smaller than their behemoth ocean-based counterparts, allowing Riverside to sail in waterways like Europe's Rhine, Rhone, Danube, Main, Moselle, and Saône rivers.

Along the way, guests can explore destinations many giant ships can't easily access — like Budapest, Hungary; Frankfurt, Germany; and Amsterdam — sometimes visiting more than one port in a day.

One of Riverside's shortest and cheapest 2024 voyages starts at $1,055 per person for a four-day Danube River cruise from Passau, Germany, to Vienna.

gourmet river cruises europe

Alcohol and excursion packages can tack on an extra $75 to $175 per person per night.

Looking to ball out? The most expensive and longest itinerary is $59,521 per person for a three-river, 22-day cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest, Hungary, in the most expensive suite with the most inclusive package.

To compare, the cheapest 2024 voyage with all-inclusive luxury competitor Uniworld River Cruises starts at $2,000 per person for an eight-day Danube River sailing.

River cruisers tend to be over the age of 55.

gourmet river cruises europe

But the new company is targeting guests 45 years old and older, specifically those who frequent luxury vacations but have yet to try a river cruise.

"New luxury travelers want to be pampered, get off and have an adventure, and come back and be taken care of," the cruise line's CEO said.

"Pampering” they will get.

gourmet river cruises europe

Of Riverside's three ships, the 394-foot-long, 74-foot-wide Mozart can accommodate the most guests — up to 162, not including the 82 crew.

Yes, it's larger than Uniworld's ships, which range from 32 to 159 guests. But it's also significantly smaller than Royal Caribbean's new 9,950-person Icon of the Seas ocean vessel.

Like most cruise liners, Riverside's three ships have spas, buffets, and plush lounges and bars.

gourmet river cruises europe

During the day, travelers can enjoy lunch at the open-air grill and relax to live music courtesy of Steinway and Bösendorfer pianos, no less.

At night, they can dine on a seven-course meal at the 295 euros ($320) per-person Vintage Room.

Riverside’s ships have up to 5 restaurants. Vintage Room is the only specialty option.

gourmet river cruises europe

The cost to dine includes a wine pairing and plates like veal with truffle and chanterelle mushrooms and "surf and turf" with beef sirloin and scallops.

But don't expect a lackluster, rushed meal at the other complimentary options: "This is not a churn-and-burn," the company's CEO said of the ships' Waterside restaurants. "You come in for fine dining."

Infused, whipped butter is apparently one of Riverside's hottest commodities.

gourmet river cruises europe

Sometimes, it has chiles. Other times, it's infused with citrus. If you're lucky, you'll get one with truffles.

"People were raving about our butter," Halboth said. "Everyone's waiting to see what butter they'll get at dinner each night."

Need to sleep off all that dairy? You're in luck. Every cabin has a king bed.

gourmet river cruises europe

Riverside's suites range from 194 to 883 square-feet. These high-end cabins include butler service, stocked mini-bars, and espresso machines.

Some suites also have double-sink vanities and walk-in closets, a hallmark of an ultra-luxury cruise vessel .

Does Riverside’s more than $260 per person, per day fare seem reasonable now?

gourmet river cruises europe

If yes, book soon. It'll only get more expensive from here.

These fares don't offset the amount Riverside is spending on amenities like the upscale food, according to Halboth. To make up for these expenditures, the cruise line plans to raise its prices gradually over the next two years.

The company's CEO said bookings have been 'a little lighter' since the start of 2024.

gourmet river cruises europe

But the back half of the year is "filling up" thanks to Americans: About 70 to 80% of its guests are from North America, the company said.

Riverside will operate its Mozart, Ravel, and Debussy ships for three years as it 'hones the brand,' Halboth said.

gourmet river cruises europe

The cruise line's two additional vessels would join its fleet in the next few years.

Given the growing popularity of river cruises , it's a good time for companies like Riverside to start expanding.

However, it could face plenty of incoming competition.

Jamie Loizou, the UK managing director of luxury river cruise line AmaWaterways, is forecasting 2024 as a "pivotal" year for the river cruise industry, noting that 15 new river-based vessels are expected to launch this year, Cruise Critic reported .

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

gourmet river cruises europe

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

gourmet river cruises europe

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

gourmet river cruises europe

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

gourmet river cruises europe

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

gourmet river cruises europe

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

gourmet river cruises europe

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

gourmet river cruises europe

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Riviera River Cruises Waiving Single Supplement on Select European Voyages

A s solo travel becomes increasingly popular, Riviera River Cruises is waiving the single supplement on select Rhine and Rhône river cruise departures later this year.

As part of the promotion, more than 500 cabins on four itineraries are up for grabs at a discounted rate for solo travelers in August and October.

Usually, the cruise line removes the single supplement on just a “small number” of cabins for each departure, says Marilyn Conroy, Riviera River Cruises’ executive vice president of sales and marketing for North America. But, this year, the company decided to boost its offerings for solo travelers.

“We know that demand for solo travel is increasing, and removing supplements on these departures will ensure even more travelers can experience the beauty of these waterways,” she adds.

Itineraries included in the deal are:

  • The 8-day “Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg” itinerary, which starts at $2,449
  • The 8-day “Rhine & Moselle” river cruise, which starts at $2,599
  • The 8-day “Rhine Cruise to Switzerland,” which starts at $2,399
  • The 8-day “Burgundy, the River Rhône & Provence” itinerary, which starts at $1,999
