First Alert Weather Day: Messy morning travel conditions
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - A First Alert Weather Day is in place for today due to tricky travel conditions for the morning commute. An early heavy burst of snow works through the region, leading to a quick, slushy accumulation of a few inches. Visibility will be lowered at times due to heavy snow and breezy conditions. Winds gust up to 30 mph for Tuesday. Monitor any delays that may occur this morning due to the messy driving conditions.
Snow will not fall for long this morning; the freezing line will gradually shift to allow for us to change over to rain. That changeover will occur from south to north within the span of roughly 4 to 8 AM. Areas to the south, like Grant, Blackford, and Jay counties will likely see the rain work in earlier, around 4 AM. Allen county and the city of Fort Wayne should begin to shift to more rain closer to 5:30/6 AM. Areas north of US-30 will hold on to the heavy snow a bit longer, gradually seeing the switch to rain all the way up to LaGrange and Stueben counties closer to 7 to 8 AM.
The combination of today’s rain and afternoon temperatures reaching the low 40s will help to melt off the morning snow accumulation over time. If you can leave for work or other activities a bit later to allow road crews to keep up with the elements, that would be better.
Today : Early AM snow, then rain; High 42; Wind E 15-20, G 30
Tonight : Lingering rain/ snow shower; Low 31; Wind SW 15-20, G 35
