Challenger Tour
Challenger tour weekly preview: four events across four continents this week on the challenger tour.
Four continents will be hosting four events this week on the Challenger Tour as action comes from Canada, The Netherlands, Mexico and Australia with players looking to capture Challenger Tour event titles.
The Hague Open is the first to get underway this week, a Challenger 6 event with 24 male players looking to capture the title. India’s World No.72 Mahesh Mangaonkar is the top seed and will be looking to claim the ninth title of his career in a place where he has spent a lot of time training over the past several years. Wales’ Owain Taylor will be hoping to mount a challenge for the title as the No.2 seed as well as other top four seeds Mohamed Nasser and Joeri Hapers.
The Windsor City Open will be running alongside the first World Tour event of the season in Canada this week. The event will host a Men’s 6k event and a Women’s 9k event. The men’s field consists of 20 Canadians all looking to win on home soil, whilst USA’s World No.55 Marina Stefanoni will occupy top spot in the women’s draw, looking to capture a seventh title.
In Australia, the Costa North Coast Coffs Harbour Open will start on August 16 with two 12k events taking place at Coffs Harbour Squash Club. Former World No.10 Joshna Chinappa is the No.2 seed, featuring in only her second Challenger Tour event since 2015. Australia’s Jess Turnbull is the top seed and will be looking to stop Chinappa to delight the home crowd, whilst plenty of talent lies beneath them both. Malaysian duo Adeen Idrakie and Ivan Yuen are the top seeds in the men’s event and would be a very exciting final if they were to reach it. They will be up against strong opposition for a final place with India’s Velevan Senthilkumar and home favourite Joseph White looking to score upsets.
The last tournament of the week is the Torneo Profesional Mexicano de Squash 2023 auspiciado por Tekae & NextCloud System, a Challenger 9 (men) and Challenger 3 (women) event. Mexico’s Alfredo Avila is the top seed, looking to score his 21st win on the tour. USA’s Chris Gordon will be featuring in his 278th PSA event as he chases down the 300 tournaments played milestone. The event will also feature a women’s Challenger 3 event with Mexican No.1 Diana Garcia leading the draw.
