Hiking in the desert is one of life's most meaningful experiences, serving up incomparable views you can’t see from your car, shared campfire meals with people you meet along the way, and silence and wide-open spaces for mindful reflection and late-night storytelling under the stars. Needless to say, hiking in Jordan – amongst fields of wildflowers, ancient sites, rugged mountains and out-of-this-world desert scapes – takes things to the next level.

Whether you have your heart set on the timeless ruins of Petra or the Dune -like landscapes of Wadi Rum, here is our pick of the best hikes in Jordan, from north to south.

1. Umm Qais to Ajloun

Best hike for forests and wildflowers 80km (50 miles) one way, 2-4 days, easy to moderate

Bookended by ancient ruins, this multiday hike from Umm Qais to the Ajloun Forest Reserve delivers the best of northern Jordan. An easy but rewarding trail leads walkers from the northern city of Umm Qais and the Greco-Roman ruins of Gadara through green forests and grassy fields to Ajloun Castle , built as part of Saladin's defenses against the Crusades.

Tackle this trail in the springtime, and you'll be rewarded by a sea of black irises and other wildflowers that bloom from March through April. If you have the fortune of meeting locals along the way, you might also get the chance to enjoy a handful of loz (almonds) picked fresh from the trees. The full route takes several days, with overnight stays at campsites or local homestays, but shorter day hikes around Umm Qais and Ajloun are possible for beginners, families with children or those short on time.

Top tip for hiking around Umm Qais: Before you hit the trails, tour the ruins of Gadara to gain some cultural and historical context and admire the unbelievable views over the surrounding hillsides. We recommend local guide Ahmad Alomari for a trip full of personal stories and insights into the ancient history of Umm Qais, plus some foraging along the way.

2. Wadi Mujib Canyon Trail

Best canyon hike near Amman 8km (5 miles) round trip, 4 hours, moderate to challenging

An easy day trip from Amman (or an overnight trip from one of the nearby Dead Sea hotels), Wadi Mujib is a refreshing escape from the desert heat. About 1.5 hours from the capital, this dramatic gully is lovingly labeled the “Grand Canyon of Jordan” for its colorful sandstone cliffs.

Although it’s possible to take easy self-guided hikes along the 3km (1.9-mile) Wadi Mujib Siq Trail, the real adventures take place on the longer Canyon Trail, where you’ll trek, wade, climb, slide and splash your way along the gorge with a Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) guide.

This hike involves canyoning techniques, such as crossing fast-moving water and slippery rocks, so it’s an adults-only adventure (participants must be 18 years of age or older), and you'll need to be able to swim. Conditions can change with the weather, and flash flooding and winter closures are a risk, so call ahead to confirm that treks are running.

Travelers under 18 can make a splash at other canyons within a two-hour drive of Amman. We suggest Wadi Salaita, reached via a fairly flat, 3km (1.9-mile) hiking trail with natural water slides and some easy rappelling; book a guided tour with TREKS .

3. Wadi Al Hasa

Best hike in summer 24km (14.9 miles) one way, 2 days, easy to moderate

Summer temperatures in Jordan can exceed 38ºC (100ºF), so if you’re visiting during the hot summer months, you’ll want to include at least one wet wadi experience to help keep you cool. Nader Manaseer, founder of Eco Hikers , recommends Wadi Al Hasa, located in the southern part of the Dead Sea region about two hours from Amman. This valley is Jordan’s longest wadi (river valley) – and its most beautiful, according to many locals – with gorge-ous cliffs, natural pools and hanging gardens.

No ropes are required for this hike, but it is more than a simple walk in the (water) park. The river flowing through the gorge can get deep, and depending on the weather, the current can be strong, so it's best to hike with a guide. Keep an eye out for fish swimming by, and bring a waterproof camera to capture the incredible rock formations you’ll spot along the way.

If you don’t have two days for the entire trail, it’s also possible to experience Wadi Al Hasa as a day trip from Amman; just keep an eye on the time and head back the way you came when you’re halfway through your available time.

4. Dana to Petra

Best hike for incredible views 76km (47 miles) one way, 4-9 days, moderate to challenging

Following Bedouin footpaths, the multi-day hike between Dana and Petra is one of the most beloved sections of the Jordan Trail , and it’s easy to see why. The varied terrain along the trail means that the scenery changes frequently, and you'll get a rich taste of Jordan’s ecology and history as you work your way from the country’s largest nature reserve toward the ancient city of Petra .

The trail stretches from the heights of Dana Biosphere Reserve (the only reserve in Jordan that includes four bioclimatic zones), descends into valleys and rises up again onto mountain ridges, culminating at Petra – a city carved from sandstone, a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. “As many times as I hike this trek, it will always be my favorite section on the Jordan Trail," enthuses Ahlam Serhan , an avid climber and adventure tour guide in Jordan. "No two days are alike. Each is unique in its own way.”

According to Bedouin guide and Petra native Mahmoud Bdoul , one of the best things about being out in this vast and rugged natural space is finding yourself slowing down to notice the smallest details – the sound of a lizard scurrying across the rocks, the feeling of wind on your neck, and the beauty of the innumerable colors and textures in the landscape.

5. Petra’s Siq

Best hike for families 1.2km (0.75 miles) one way, 30 minutes-1 hour, easy

Carved by both nature and the people of the ancient Nabatean civilization, the main approach route to the ancient city of Petra follows an easy, well-trodden trail, delivering a genuine "wow" moment as the ruins loom into view as you round the last corner. Although it’s tempting to race down the winding pathway known as Al Siq ("the shaft") to reach the iconic facade of the Treasury , the trail itself is also steeped in desert history. To get the best out of the experience, book a local guide through Experience Jordan or Engaging Cultures , who can share more of the ancient city’s storied past and point out manmade features and carvings en route.

With few elevation changes, this short trek is perfect for families with children who want to visit Petra but lack the patience and energy to explore the vast 264-sq-km (102-sq-mile) site fully. Travelers with mobility needs can also visit Petra via the Siq trail with the help of golf carts or be carried along the trail by donkeys or camels. You may notice that some of the animals used for transportation at Petra are mistreated ; if you’re considering a donkey or camel ride, be sure to choose an animal that appears healthy and is led by an adult handler.

A word of warning: As in many other top tourist sites around the world, some of the would-be guides and animal handlers at Petra can be pushy and even dishonest. Avoid going off-trail alone, and always book your trip with a reputable tour operator. If you're unsure whether a guide is legit, reach out to a trusted authority such as the Jordan Tourism Board .

Top tip for hiking to Petra: Much of the ancient site at Petra is still shrouded in mystery, and only about 15% of the ancient city has been excavated. You'll get more from a trip if you hire a local guide with personal stories to tell, family history to share and a deep knowledge of the place who can guide you along lesser-known trails overlooked by the crowds.

6. Petra to Wadi Rum

Best hike to go off the beaten path 90km (55.9 miles) one way, 5 days, moderate to challenging

While many visitors include stops in both Petra and Wadi Rum , it’s the hike between the two that delivers some of Jordan's most memorable off-the-beaten-path experiences. Leave behind the crowds of Petra and pass through quiet canyons and the “colored valley” – a natural rock masterpiece where the multi-hued sandstone creates swirls and splashes that look as though they were painted purposely.

At the trek's finish, a sea of sand punctuated by towering buttes signals your arrival at Wadi Rum. Sink your toes into the sand when you arrive at the dunes on day four, giving your feet a chance to breathe and connect with the land. The expansive wilderness, star-filled skies and sheer silence of this humbling hike make it a must for intrepid travelers seeking a truly contemplative experience.

7. Jordan Trail

Best difficult hike in Jordan More than 675km (419.4 miles) one way, 30-45 days, challenging

The Jordan Trail is the country’s ultimate hike. From the northern forests near Umm Qais to the Red Sea in the south, this epic, multi-week route passes through dozens of villages, visiting Unesco World Heritage Sites, ascending mountains and weaving its way along narrow wadis and across sand dunes. The Jordan Trail is more than a hike: it’s an immersive experience of Jordan through its tremendous terrain and the culture, cuisine, history, language and traditions of its people. If you don't have time for the whole route, consider hiking shorter sections.

Given the level of difficulty, long-term commitment, the lack of clear waymarkers in some areas and the limited availability of supplies along sections of the route, this is a trek for highly experienced hikers who are accustomed to hiking in desert conditions and navigating by GPS. If you require additional support, contact the Jordan Trail Association to arrange a guide and water and food drops, or you can join an organized group hike .

Tips for hiking in Jordan

Hiking is one of the best ways to experience Jordan, but this activity comes with some risks. Be mindful of the weather and seasons when planning your trip. Summer (May to September) can be scorching hot and dry in many parts of Jordan, while winter (November to February) can be cold and wet with occasional snowfall. During the colder months, or for any overnight hikes and hikes at higher elevations, always bring warm clothing.

Flash flooding is also a hazard in the spring, fall and winter. It can be particularly dangerous in river valleys, gorges and other low-lying areas, including Wadi Mujib, Wadi Al Hasa and trails near the Dead Sea. Always check the weather and call ahead to check conditions with organizations such as the RSCN or the Jordan Trail Association .

If you're hiking to a destination not managed by a local organization, check the local news and weather reports and seek advice from local people. If you can’t find concrete answers to questions about the route, follow the fallback guidance for hikers everywhere: “If in doubt, don’t go out.”

Here are some more tips for staying safe while hiking in the desert kingdom.

  • Pack smart: Bring adequate water, snacks, sunscreen and a first-aid kit in your backpack – even for a day hike – and make sure you carry (or rent) any necessary equipment, such as hiking poles or helmets for canyoning.
  • Bring practical footwear: The type of hiking shoes you need will depend on the hike. For example, sneakers are fine for a walk through the Siq at Petra, but to fully explore the site, you'll want lightweight hiking boots with good traction. On the other hand, if you’re spending a day in Wadi Mujib, you might be more comfortable in water shoes. Ask your tour operator for their advice.
  • Use a GPS: Not all trails in Jordan are marked clearly, and cell service is not always available, so if you’re not on a guided hike, you will need a GPS device to find your way. Always let someone know where you are going and when you'll be back.
  • Consider hiring a local guide: While guides aren't needed for every hike in Jordan, hiring a local guide has numerous benefits, including local knowledge, cultural insights and helping you to stay safe on the trails. A guide can help you navigate unmarked turns, provide emergency first-aid and act as a translator if you get into trouble. Booking local guides also puts tourism money directly back into the local economy. Remember to book with a reputable guide or tour operator; if you’re uncertain, check with the Jordan Tourism Board, on-site visitor centers or the Jordan Trail Association.
  • Carry out whatever you carry in: Littering is a big issue in Jordan, and unfortunately, you will find trash scattered in even the most remote places. Do your part to keep Jordan’s trails clean by carrying out your trash, or join an Eco Hikers trip and be part of the “clean as we hike” club.
  • Be aware of wildlife and aggressive dogs: Jordan has snakes and scorpions, so be watchful of these creatures when walking, sitting and sleeping. It’s also likely you will meet dogs (typically guarding sheep, goats or property) while out hiking in Jordan, and these animals can be aggressive. If the shepherd or owner is nearby, they will often call the dog back. Otherwise, if no owner is in sight, you may need to pick up a rock and gesture as if throwing it while you move away.
  • Keep emergency numbers to hand: The Jordan tourism police hotline is 117777, or you can reach them via WhatsApp at +962 7 7099 1814. For anyone hiking the Jordan Trail, the phone number for the Jordan Trail office is +962 6461 0999.

Petra & Wadi Rum Trek

The tour was very good. One thing that bugged me was the tip we needed to contribute to. According to the trip notes, the participation was optional and the amount could be decided by us. Which was not the case. I'm not saying I wouldn't have tipped, the driver and the bedouin family who transported and cooked for us more than deserved their money. Perhaps the information needs to be clearer.

A complete guide to hiking the epic Jordan Trail

The 400-mile Jordan Trail spans the entire length of the country, snaking through incredible sites like Petra, As-Salt and Wadi Rum. Here's how to plan your route.

Sandwiched between Iraq, Syria, Israel and Saudi Arabia, Jordan is home to stunning desert landscapes, world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a thriving Bedouin culture. Spanning its length is the epic 400-mile Jordan Trail. Established in 2015, it stretches from Umm Qais in the bucolic north to Aqaba in the arid south and takes in some of the country’s most iconic sites, such as the rock-hewn city of Petra and the wide sandy plain of Wadi Rum. In total, the trek is estimated to take 40 days to finish — and, though split into eight sections with wild camping available en route, it's still no walk in the park. There are big distances to cover, the sun can be fierce and the elevation is up to a 3,280ft a day, but the sense of pride that comes with each stamp in your Jordan Trail ‘passport’ is immense.

The historic remains of the Roman city of Pella, one of the most ancient sites in Jordan.

1. Umm Qais to Ajloun

Distance: 50miles/four days Difficulty: Moderate

It’s best boot forward on this first leg of the epic trail. It starts on the border with Israel and Syria and bucks hikers’ expectations of a dry, desert-like Jordan by plunging them into a landscape of verdant oak forests and farmland. Travellers share compacted stony paths with long-eared goats and traverse hills scattered with ancient olive groves and villages pioneering community-based tourism. Highlights include the historic remains of the Roman city of Pella, the Byzantine monastery of Tel Mar Elias and neck-craning views of the medieval mountaintop Ajloun Castle, built by the nephew of the famous leader Sultan Saladin. Did you know? The unassuming ‘Jesus Cave’ in Umm Qais is said to be where Jesus stayed for a few nights before his baptism.

2. Ajloun to As-Salt

Distance: 39 miles/four days Difficulty: Moderate

As the stone towers of Ajloun Castle recede, the trail follows a mix of tarmac and stony roads into the pine-scented Al-Safsafa Forest and then onward to farmland that opens to reveal elevated views of the alpine-like King Talal Dam. Then it’s upwards past the cooling spray of Rmemeen waterfall and into the mixed Christian and Muslim village of Rmemeen to stay in the grounds of its beautiful church. Look out for fields splashed with crimson poppies and honeyed buttercups before entering the town of As-Salt, where it's common to see men wearing ghutra (traditional Arabian headdress) playing board games such as backgammon or mancala. Did you know? Jordan’s only microbrewery, Carakale, is in Fuheis, just south of As-Salt.

As-Salt was inscribed by UNESCO as a ‘city of tolerance and urban hospitality’ in 2021.

3. As-Salt to Wadi Zarqa Ma’in

Distance: 52 miles/four days Difficulty: Moderate

After As-Salt’s golden tiers of Ottoman-style homes, the moist air begins to dry and arid ambers start to consume the greens. The route passes the colonnaded splendour of Qasr al-Abd palace in Iraq Al-Ameer, built by a noble Jewish family some 2,300 years ago, and descends the zigzag of King Hussein’s Rally Road, built to satisfy the former ruler’s admiration for cars. Hikers pass Bedouin camps and the mercurial shimmer of the Dead Sea appears on the horizon. Then, after following an old Roman road, the trail enters the embrace of Wadi Zarqa Main and Wadi Wala, cut through by refreshing streams. Did you know? In 2021, As-Salt became the sixth UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jordan.

4. Three Wadis to Al-Karak

Distance: 47 miles/four days Difficulty: Difficult

It’s up down, up down in this challenging section that traverses three wadis — Hidan, Mujib and el Tawahin — and a lunar-like terrain peopled by goats, small hardy plants and cacti. Listen to the crunch of gravel under foot, watch the sun and clouds create shifting patterns on the curves and crevices of the canyons, cool off in the fast-flowing stream of the 2,600ft-deep Wadi Mujib and wild camp beneath starry night skies. Archaeological highlights include the elegant stone arches of the Majdaline ruins and the Crusader-built Al-Karak Castle that crowns the hill overlooking Karak and marks the finale of this fourth section. Did you know? Wadi Mujib is billed as the Grand Canyon of Jordan.

A person looks out at the Dana Biosphere Reserve.

5. Al-Karak to Dana

Distance: 52 miles/four days Difficulty: Moderate

A broad bright-white gravel path leads hikers away from Al-Karak, around hillsides studded with rocks and sun-parched grasses, and past the abandoned village of Khirbet Ainun. Then it’s on to the lush olive groves and orchards on the rim of Wadi Numeira and an ascent of limestone cliffs up to the Tor al-Taboun viewpoint, before descending more than 3,000ft into the reed-dappled base of Wadi Hasa. Once hikers have scrabbled up the other side, there’s the chance to stop at a Bedouin encampment for a reviving sugary tea before heading on to the evocative ruins of Al-Ma’tan, a Bronze Age village. The final stop on this leg is the village of Dana on the outskirts of the must-visit Dana Biosphere Reserve. Did you know? The Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan’s largest nature reserve and home to endangered species such as the Syrian wolf and sand cat.

6. Dana to Petra

Distance: 52.2 miles/four days Difficulty: Moderate

By this stage, hikers’ soles may be getting weary, but their souls will be lifted by one of the most diverse and awe-inspiring sections of the trail. Departing Dana, the landscape changes every few miles from fertile farmland into ochre-hued labyrinthine valleys, passing through wadis Feynan and Araba, and culminating in the UNESCO-listed ‘Rose City’ of Petra, hand-chiselled from the dusky pink sandstone some 2,300 years ago by the Nabateans. Following in the footsteps of ancient spice traders, trekkers enter via the less-used ‘back door’ entrance from Little Petra and pass the famous colonnaded Treasury. Did you know? National Geographic included this section in its list of the 15 best hikes in the world.

A camel in the desert.

7. Petra to Wadi Rum

Distance: 56.3 miles/five days Difficulty: Moderate to difficult

This epic leg between the iconic sites of Petra and Wadi Rum crosses the largest stretch of wilderness on the trail and offers a back-country immersion few other visitors experience. This is a dry Biblical landscape, where hikers trace narrow tracks that cling to rocky hillsides while seeking shade in the overhanging ledges. The route passes the dustbowl of Wadi Sabra and the ‘coloured canyon’, whose rocks are rich in rainbow-hued mineral deposits, between the curvaceous canyon walls of Wadi Aheimar and beneath the stone arches of Nabatean trading post Humeima. Try hiking in silence to notice the small things, from the way the wind has carved the rock into dramatic pinnacles and pillars, how the late afternoon sun casts walkers’ silhouettes on the wadi walls and, come night, the bright twinkle of a panoply of stars. Did you know? Wadi Rum has been used as a filming location in the likes of Dune (2021) , Lawrence of Arabia (1962) and The Martian (2015) .

Thousands of small candles outside Petra, a site carved into the side of a cliff.

8. Wadi Rum to Aqaba

Distance: 67 miles/six days Difficulty: Easy to moderate

The last and longest stretch of the trail sees the rocky terrain crumble to sand and the full majesty of Wadi Rum open up into a wide plain. It passes the mammoth wind-hewn rock arch of Jabal Kharazah, the cliffs of Jebel Khazali, which are engraved with ancient rock art, and through the Bedouin hamlets of Shakriya, Titen and Rum. The final night’s camp is reached by old shepherd paths that curl up granite mountains and on the last day it’s down, down toward Aqaba on the north-eastern tip of the Red Sea. Run fully clothed into its salty embrace to celebrate completing the Jordan Trail. Did you know? The Red Sea marks the divide between Africa and Asia.

Welcome to Jordan! Take some time to arrive, check into your hotel room, and have a first experience of the delightful Jordanian cuisine. Depending on when your flight arrived, you will even have some time to explore Amman by yourself.

Amman is Jordan’s capital, and one of the oldest cities in the world. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, the city has grown into a modern city with all that you might expect. Despite this amazing growth, Amman has retained its character and traditions, and the culture of hospitality and generosity is still very present across the city.

Overnight: Hotel in Amman

At 7:30 am right after breakfast, the group will be picked up from the hotel in Amman. The drive from Amman to the starting point of the trek takes about 2.5 hours – time to get to know your fellow hikers or to take a nap. Our trekking journey starts with hiking through the diverse landscapes of the Dana Biosphere Reserve. The reserve includes four distinct ecozones thus accommodating an astonishing diversity of plants, birds, and other animals. First, we’ll follow a trail along the mountains overlooking Dana Valley, and then descend into al Khashasha Valley A wilderness campsite awaits us on the outskirts of the valley

Overnight: Wilderness Camping in Mansoura

Time: 5-7 hrs Hiking Distance: 15 Km Ascent: 260m Descent: 690 m

Well rested, we will leave the campsite in the early morning, and head towards Furon. Today‘s hike is challenging but extremely rewarding We will start ascending through the mountains for approximately an hour before getting a glimpse of the beautiful Sharah Mountains and the wide Wadi Araba Desert. That outstanding view will accompany you all the way to your campsite in Al Furon Enjoy a cup of tea and the great view from the campsite while passing the time until your well-earned dinner.

Overnight: Wilderness Camping in Furon

Time: 5-7 hrs Hiking Distance: 16 Km Ascent: 563 m Descent: 170 m

Today’s hike leads past Ras Al-Feid and towards Ghbour Whedat, through some of the country’s wildest corners.

Contouring the Sharah Mountains, we follow a trail comprised of smaller, connecting Bedouin shepherd paths. The bare peeks of black, rugged mountains overlooking the trail, and the precipitous drops of the canyons below make this part of the trek spectacular.

Gradually climbing up the hills, you will uncover more spectacular views over the barren desert below. Then, as you proceed towards the wilderness campsite, the landscape slowly becomes softer, with mushroom-like rock formations lining the way.

Overnight: Wilderness Camping in Ghbour Whedat

Hiking Distance: 17.1Km Ascent: 750m Descent: 920m

After yesterday’s very remote hike, we will see signs of increasing human habitation while approaching Little Petra today. Passing Bedouin camps, sheep pens, and small agricultural plots you can gain an impression of the living environment of part of Jordan’s population. We will also pass the first Nabataean ruins, including wine and olive presses, aqueducts, and other ancient water infrastructures.

Finally, we will climb up through a canyon walled with soft sandstone rocks, and then down a narrow, steep flight of stairs into Little Petra. The site, also known as Siq al-Barid (Engl. the Cold Canyon), is believed by archaeologists to be a ‘suburb’ of Petra and was probably meant to house traders traveling along the Silk Road. After some time to explore, we’ll head on to our home for the night – hot showers are waiting!

Overnight: Bedouin Camp near Little Petra

Hiking Distance: 14Km Ascent: 610m Descent: 560m

On our last trekking day, we will enter Petra ‘via the Back Door’, avoiding most other tourists.

Amidst high sandstone mountains, a good track leads down Wadi Ghurab. The way then follows a Nabataean route out of the valley, and skirts around the final mountain on a natural rock terrace which has been ‘improved’ for the safety of walkers. It narrows slightly before reaching a hidden plateau high above the impressive chasm of Wadi Siyyagh. Just beyond, ‘the Monastery’ suddenly comes into view.

After walking the last meters to the impressive structure, we can rest for a bit, taking in the view There also is a Bedouin café for refreshments. Then, more Nabataean steps will lead us down into the main site. We’ll make our way through a colonnaded street, past rock-cut tombs, temples, and a Roman-style theater, to finally arrive at Petra’s probably most famous building – the Treasury. Take your time to marvel at the façade’s detailed artworks. After a final look, we’ll leave the site through the Siq a narrow, high-walled canyon, and then head to our accommodation for the night.

Overnight: Hotel in Petra

Hiking Distance: 13.8Km Ascent: 496m Descent: 519m

After a relaxed breakfast, we leave the mountains of Petra behind and move on to Wadi Rum. Are you ready for a desert adventure?! We will meet our Bedouin hosts and set out on a 4×4 jeep safari to explore valleys and narrow gorges, discover ancient rock inscriptions, climb sand dunes and rock bridges, and generally enjoy the majestic desert landscape. At each step, you have the opportunity to hike, scramble and explore at your own pace. After viewing one of the most magical sunsets in the world, we’ll return to our camp for, dinner, an experience of the famous Bedouin hospitality, a night under the starlit sky, and – of course – countless cups of tea.

Overnight: Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum

Today, we will leave the desert and proceed to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. You can spend some time floating in the salty waters, try out the ‘magical’ Dead Sea mud, relax by the pool, or pamper yourself with some spa treatments – the perfect cure if your legs are still tired and sore from all the hiking. In the late afternoon, we will hop on the bus for the last time, and follow the long, winding road up to Amman – to return to where the adventure began.

Sadly, all great things must come to an end. For those flying out already, it is generally recommended to leave Amman at least 4 hours prior to your departure. We wish you a safe flight, and hope you will return back home with many wonderful memories of your time in Jordan!

Bedouin Camps: Rooming on a twin-share basis. So travelers booking together will share a room.

These are fixed site, touristic Bedouin Camps, staffed by locals, in Little Petra and Wadi Rum. Bathrooms are normally off-suite, with a women’s and men’s public bathroom. The tents do not have A/C or heater, but the desert normally has cooler temperatures at night.

jordan hiking trip

The main airport (QAIA – Queen Alia International Airport) is approximately 1-hour outside of Amman.

Arrival: Day 1 is scheduled just for your arrival and check-in.

Therefore any flight arriving on Day 1, with enough time to arrive, make it to the hotel, and get some sleep, is a good choice.

If you would like to arrive a day or so early, that’s great! You can easily book an add-on for one extra night on either end of your tour. Let us know and we can book extra nights and/or additional activities. Or feel free to arrange things on your own and join the group when it’s time.

Departure: Day 9 is scheduled just for your check-out and departure to the airport.

Therefore a morning / mid-day departure flight on Day 9 is ideal.

It is possible to have a departure flight on day 8. If you chose to do so, we recommend a flight that departs at least after 7 pm.

Departing on Day 8 makes things a bit more rushed and more tiring. But this option may work well for people with relatively short flights, less time off, or if the airfare available just happens to be a better deal that day.

We are operating these trips during the best times of year to trek in Jordan.

Throughout the year, at the camps during the night you will want to have long pants, and a light jacket or sweatshirt.

During November, December, and February, you may also want warmer clothes like a bigger jacket, hats, gloves, and a light rain jacket.

We know we are located in the Middle East, but don’t worry – Jordan is not that hot. We don’t offer many departures in the Summer for that reason, but May has the potential to be on the warmer side. During the warmest times this trip operates, the temperature is usually not much over 35 celsius (95 Fahrenheit).

This is a 5-day trek with each day covering 14-17+ kilometers (8.5-10.5+ miles). That is five days in a row with 5-7 hour hikes.

So you should be reasonably fit to be able to enjoy this hike.

Shoes The ideal shoe for this hike is light-weight hiking shoes.

If you only have big-clunky hiking boots and running/athletic shoes, you could take both and see what you prefer on the hike.

Hiking Sticks/Poles Most of this hike is on good, firm ground, so hiking sticks are not required. The vast majority of people do not use hiking sticks for this hike.

However, if you like hiking with Hiking sticks/poles, or want them just in case, feel free to bring them.

During Wilderness Camping, you should not expect to have access to electric charging.

After leaving Amman on Day 2, your first good charging opportunity will be at the Bedouin Camp in Little Petra on night 5. You can charge your devices there until around 10pm when the camp turns the generator off for the night.

If you want extended access to electronic devices, we recommend bringing battery packs or you can also bring solar recharging devices.

Where to Find the Best Hiking Trails in Jordan

The Dana Biosphere Reserve

Hiking in Jordan might be your once-in-a-lifetime chance to experience the desert and mountains in all their glory. Between the months of February and April, Jordan transforms itself into an earthy wonder full of green meadows and forests, flowing streams and blooming orchids. You should consider planning your adventure around this time of the year.

Wadi Mujib Malaqi Trail

Wadi Mujib is a high-up valley with streams of the Jordan River pouring down into the Dead Sea . The journey starts by walking through the narrow gorge of the valley, with big and small waterfalls flowing down from both sides of the mountain rocks. This experience can’t be put into words no matter how hard you try.

Dana Biosphere Reserve

With no sound but the reverberations of bird calls, you will find Dana not only a wildlife trailing sight, but also an escape towards a world of peace and quiet. Its steep meadowy mountains over view the canyon below, from which you can hike down towards the village of ruins and back up to rest at your campsite.

Along the Siq

One of the highlights of the city of Petra is the first wonder to welcome you when reaching the site. The Siq extends 1200 meters ahead, and starts with a wobbly uneven ground, which makes it both a hiking and walking site where you can take breakable stops to marvel at the carvings and formations along the way.

Hiking in Jordan: Petra and Wadi Rum

8 days | step off the beaten track on a trekking adventure through jordan.

Your local leader will help you explore the ancient city of Petra

Experience the beauty and culture of Jordan on this exhilarating 8-day trekking adventure. Wander the streets of modern Amman, marvel at Little Petra, get off the beaten track around ancient Petra, be dazzled by the famous Treasury building, join the Bedouins for a magical desert adventure, admire the Byzantine mosaics in Madaba and float in the famously salty Dead Sea. This is Jordan at its active, action-packed best.

Trip overview

  • Visit Little Petra and hike the lesser known back-road into iconic Petra, spending a day exploring the secret hiking trails of this awe-inspiring ancient treasure.
  • Explore the spectacular Dana Reserve on foot – this unbelievably diverse reserve was established to protect wildlife and provide local communities with employment.
  • Wadi Rum is a world unto itself. Hop in a jeep and experience its twisted rock scenery and watch the sun set on a trek through this rugged moonscape
  • The semi-nomadic Bedouins are renowned for their hospitality, so you're in for a treat. Learn about their culture over an earthen oven-cooked feast before sleeping under the stars
  • Experience the best weightlessness this side of outer space with an effortless float in the super-salty waters of the Dead Sea
  • There is good amount of hiking involved in this trip and also when visiting Jordan's historic sites, especially in Petra and Wadi Rum. A reasonable level of fitness is required. Most of the time there is no shade, so remember to bring a hat, sun protection, and sturdy, comfortable hiking boots or walking shoes.
  • The distances that you will be trekking vary from 14 kilometres to 20 kilometres over a range of terrains, we recommend you consider packing trekking poles for the hikes.
  • The desert camp in Wadi Rum is basic but incredibly memorable. There are tents and shared western bathroom facilities. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night, so remember to bring some warmer layers, especially if visiting outside of the summer months.

Ahlan Wa Sahlan! Welcome to Jordan, cosmopolitan and contemporary, yet steeped in biblical history. Your adventure begins with a welcome meeting at 6pm this evening. Please look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception where it will take place. As there's not much time spent in Amman on this itinerary, it's worth arriving a day or two early to explore the sights. Highlights include the citadel, the Jordan Museum and the Roman Theatre. At any rate, perhaps try an ara’yes while you're here – a toastie filled with spicy mincemeat.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

If you can't arrange a flight that will arrive in time for the welcome meeting, you may wish to arrive a day early. We'll be happy to book additional accommodation for you (subject to availability). If you're going to be late, please inform the hotel reception. We'll be collecting your insurance details and next of kin information at this meeting, so please have these on hand

After breakfast, head out for the first trek of your adventure. Journey to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, the largest nature reserve in Jordan. Covering 320 square kilometres, the reserve is made up of mountains, Wadis and sand dunes, and is home to an incredibly diverse display of flora and fauna. The reserve was created to protect the natural environment while generating jobs for the local community. Your trek today takes you in and around this protected area, exploring with the expertise of a local guide. Keep an eye out for the varied wildlife you’ll find here, including falcons, chameleons, foxes, porcupines and more than 700 species of plants. After your trek, transfer to Little Petra. Believed by archaeologists to have housed visiting traders on the Silk Road, Little Petra is every bit as fascinating as its larger counterpart (just a lot quieter!). Take some time to explore the site with your local leader this afternoon, then settle in at your camp for dinner and stargazing.

  • Permanent Camp (1 night)
  • Dana Nature Reserve guided hike
  • Little Petra visit

Today’s trek is approximately 11km with 350m elevation gain and will take approximately 5 hours.

This morning after breakfast, start your hike directly from the camp, following a back-trail and leading to Petra. The landscape today is ever changing – sandy plateaus, bedouin campsites, goat herds and stone staircases. Your guided tour culminates at The Monastery, a seriously impressive seven-storey structure with a doorway that's eight metres high. Though less ornate than the Treasury, the sheer scale of this building makes it an amazing sight. Reportedly it was used as a temple by Christians in the Byzantine period. Trace your way back to the camp in early afternoon and enjoy the rest of the day as you please.

  • Petra - Leader-led tour of Petra
  • Little Petra Backdoor guided hike

Today’s trek is approximately 15-17km with 420m elevation gain and will take between 6-8 hours.

Today is sure to be one remember as you spend it discovering the ancient site of Petra. This jewel of Jordan is justifiably on the 'must see' list for many travellers. The lost city of the biblical Nabateans comprises an impressive series of tombs and dwellings hidden behind ornate facades carved directly into rock. Shake off the crowds and spend the day taking on some of the sites secret hiking trails, where if you’re lucky, you won’t see another soul. What you will see, however, is the Tomb of the Obelisks, the High Place of Sacrifice, Lion Monument, Wadi Farasa and lots more. You will be more familiar with the amazing site of Petra, so enjoy some free time to explore around in your own pace this afternoon. Return to your accommodation this evening and put your feet up after a long but oh so rewarding day.

  • Madras Trail guided hike
  • High Place guided hike
  • Wadi Farasa guided hike

Today’s treks are approximately 12km total and will take between 5-6 hours.

After a leisurely morning, journey to Wadi Rum, your base for the next two nights. On arrival, start with a guided tour by 4x4 vehicle with your camp host. You'll see the amazing sights and landscapes of Wadi Rum, such as the famous Seven Pillars of Wisdom, sand dunes and rock bridges. As the sun begins to set, you’ll explore the beautiful lunar-like landscape on foot, taking in several canyons and the Um Fruth Rock Arch before finishing up at your camp for the night. Tonight you’ll stay in a simple desert camp, with the choice of sleeping in a tent or out under the stars. Enjoy a delicious dinner cooked in an earthen oven by your Bedouin hosts. Conditions are basic at the desert camp, but the hospitality of these people is legendary, and the experience of sleeping beneath this desert sky is a memorable one.

  • Desert Camp (1 night)
  • Wadi Rum desert jeep excursion
  • Sunset hike including Um Fruth Rock Arch

Today’s trek is approximately 11km with 250m elevation gain and will take approximately 4 hours. A mattress and blankets are provided tonight. While the desert may be very hot during the day, it will still be cool at night, so warm layers are highly recommended if you're travelling outside of the summer months. Western-style toilet facilities are available.

After waking up in the unique surrounds of the Bedouin camp, enjoy a trek around the area, taking in ancient water collection systems, Thamudic inscriptions and many unique rock formations. You’ll be joined by a local guide and a support vehicle, and there will be stops for tea and lunch. Along the way, you might like to scale one of the large sand dunes for sensational views of the surrounding area. Erosion over the ages has created fantastic gnarled shapes in the landscape. Explore the distinctive rock formations and soak in the vast silence of the desert. Later, return to camp for another night in the desert camp with your new Bedouin friends.

  • Desert guided hike including lunch

Today’s trek is approximately 17km with an elevation gain of 260m and may take up to 8 hours.

Rise early to catch the first sunrays over Wadi Rum. After breakfast, travel to the small town of Madaba. This town is famous for its Ottoman-style houses and beautiful Byzantine-era mosaics, including the famous 6th-century mosaic map of Jerusalem and the Holy Land at St George's Church. Hundreds of other mosaics from the 5th to the 7th century are scattered throughout Madaba’s churches and homes.  This afternoon, take a short drive to the shores of the Dead Sea for a weightless dip in its famously salty waters, and a chance to watch the sunset in one of the world’s most spectacular locations. Back in Madaba this evening, you may like to gather your travel buddies for a celebratory shisha as this adventure comes to an end.

  • Madaba visit including St George's Church
  • Dead Sea sunset swim

This trekking adventure in Jordan comes to an end today. There are no activities planned and you are free to depart the accommodation at any time.

7 breakfasts, 1 lunch, 3 dinners

Permanent camp (1 night), Desert Camp (2 nights), Hotel (4 nights)

If you love hiking and exploring new trails, then hiking in Jordan should be high on your list of things to do for your next vacation in the Middle East.

With its dramatic desert landscapes, sweeping canyons, and historical sites like Petra, Jordan is an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise.

For those seeking thrills, there are difficult hikes in Jordan featuring steep ascents and dizzying heights, such as Mount Nebo or Wadi Rum . On the other hand, those looking for a more relaxed experience will find plenty of gentle trails with stunning views.

Jordan is a stunning destination for hikers of all levels and abilities. From challenging trails that tackle rugged terrain to strolls through breathtaking landscapes, Jordan hiking has something for everyone.

These are the best Jordan hikes!

Little Petra to Petra – Backdoor Trail to Al-Deir (Monastery)

The Monastery in Petra

Duration: 4-5 hours

Distance: 7.7 Miles/12.4 Km (can be shortened by several kilometers)

Difficulty Level: Easy/Moderate (can skip the beginning and do just the easy part)

If you’re looking for an off-the-beaten-path hike in Jordan that offers up incredible views of Petra’s Al-Deir (Monastery), look no further than the Little Petra to Petra Backdoor Trail, one of the best Jordan hikes.

The trail ends inside Petra at Al-Deir , also known as the Monastery. The Monastery is even more impressive than the more-famous Treasury – it’s bigger and less crowded, and many people don’t see it during their visit!

The Backdoor Trail to Petra’s Al-Deir (Monastery) is a 12.4 km one-way trek that offers adventurers a chance to explore this famous historical site without crowds. If you’re not a fan of free climbing, you’ll want to skip the first 1-2.5 km, which is very difficult – the rest of the trail is pretty easy from there, and many travelers do just that part.

Beginning at Little Petra, this moderate hike winds through the desert terrain, taking Jordan hikers across sandy plateaus and offering stunning views of the towering monastery door.

Going this route, you won’t need to hike up the nearly 900 steps up to the Monastery, and only need to walk down them on your way to explore the rest of Petra.

As with most Jordan hikes, it’s best to begin early in the morning. And unless you’re very skilled at reading hiking maps, you’ll want to go with a local guide or Jordan hiking tour group, as the trail is not well-marked.

Along the way, you’ll find ancient tombs, mausoleums, and other structures of historical importance that many don’t even know about. This is a great hike for those looking for a quieter experience than the heavily trafficked main route to the Monastery.

It is highly recommended that hikers get their Jordan Pass/Petra tickets viewed and stamped in advance of this hike, as it is required for entry. Since this route passes through the back entrance, the Petra site staff will not be present to check your ticket at the Monastery’s main portal. Therefore, all visitors must ensure they have valid tickets for the Petra site before beginning their hike.

For those ready to explore a less-traveled route to reach one of Jordan’s most impressive sites, hiking the Backdoor Trail to Petra’s Al-Deir (Monastery) is an unforgettable experience!

Dana to Petra Trek

Duration: 4 Days + 1 or more days exploring Petra

Distance: 52.5 Miles/84.5 Km

Difficulty Level: Moderate

If you’re looking for an unforgettable experience hiking in Jordan, look no further than the Dana to Petra Trek, a Jordan hiking trail that has been recognized as one of the best hikes in the world by National Geographic .

This 4-day trek will take you through the incredible Dana Biosphere Reserve and finishes just in time for hikers to explore one of the world’s most famous historical sites – Petra.

  • Day 1 – Dana to Wadi Malaga
  • Day 2 – Wadi Malaga to Ras Al-Feid
  • Day 3 – Ras Al-Feid to Little Petra
  • Day 4 – Little Petra to Petra
  • Day 5 – Backdoor Hike to Petra + more time exploring this world wonder (a separate hike)

The Dana to Petra trek is Region 6 of The Jordan Trail, a 40-day trail that stretches from Um Qais in the north to Aqaba in the south. Spanning nearly 500 miles across the country, hikers are rewarded with spectacular views of diverse nature.

This Jordan hike isn’t for the faint of heart. Along the way you’ll be wild camping, often without cell reception or easy access to water and shelter – that’s why a guide is highly recommended. Keep your eyes open and you could see some of Dana’s wildlife such as lizards, vultures, or even an ibex!

On the Dana to Petra Trek, hikers will experience the breathtaking beauty of some of Jordan’s most renowned sites. They’ll pass by Feynan ruins and ancient copper mines, a hidden stream, and a waterfall in Wadi Feid , Little Petra, and eventually end up in the awe-inspiring ancient city of Petra.

From there, you may decide to add on the backdoor trail to Petra’s Monastery, another incredible Jordan hike detailed above, combining two of the best Jordan hikes.

This four-day trek – which doesn’t include exploration of Petra – truly offers something for everyone: a challenging hike with incredible views, opportunities to learn about Jordan’s rich history and culture, and time spent in one of the world’s most beautiful places on the planet.

Don’t forget to have your Petra tickets in hand before you do the backdoor hike since you can’t get in without them, and it’s mandatory to notify and pay fees to Dana Biosphere Reserve before setting off.

Treasury Viewpoint Trek / Al Khubtha Trail

Treasury Viewpoint

Duration: 30 minutes

Distance: 2.2 mile/3.5 km (plus the walk from the Visitor’s Center to the Treasury)

The Treasury of Petra is an iconic location made famous in films such as Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade – and hiking the Al Khubtha Trail to a breathtaking viewpoint above The Treasury was one of my favorite hikes in Jordan! This is Jordan hiking at its best.

For those who want to explore beyond the crowded main entrance to Petra, the Treasury Viewpoint Trek is a fantastic alternative way to experience one of Jordan’s most famous attractions.

If you’re coming from the Petra main entrance (as opposed to the backdoor entrance detailed in the Jordan hikes above), you’ll walk through the beautiful Siq of Petra to the front of the Treasury, about 1.25 miles/2 km.

Local Bedouins will, sometimes aggressively, offer to show you to the Treasury Viewpoint for a small fee – this is a shorter trail than Al Khubtha , with a steep climb. If you don’t mind a slightly longer walk, take the Al Khubtha trail to the free viewpoint.

To get to the trail, take a right at the Treasury, and follow the main trail towards the Royal Tombs – that’s where the 2.2 mile/3.5 km Al Khubtha trail begins.

You’ll need to be in good physical shape as you’ll be navigating some seriously steep ancient steps. The journey will take around 30 minutes, depending on your fitness level – although it can take longer if you stop to enjoy the stunning views along the way!

The trail isn’t always clearly marked, but just keep following the trail straight-ish, a few steps down to the left when you finish ascending, and you’ll find a Bedouin cafe straight ahead. Inside this café is where you’ll find the amazing viewpoint – and while the entrance is free, it’s always nice to buy a cup of tea as a thank you.

Wadi Mujib Siq Trail (and Canyoning Adventure!)

Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib

Duration: 2 hours

Distance: 1.25 miles/2 km (in the water!)

Difficulty Level: Easy/Moderate

The Wadi Mujib Siq Trail is one of the best hikes in Jordan and for good reason. Located in the Mujib Biosphere Reserve east of the Dead Sea, this trail offers hikers a unique experience that’s quite different from other hiking trails in Jordan.

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve – often called the “Grand Canyon of Jordan” is stunning, and the Siq Trail is the most popular (and easiest) hike you can do here. The trail takes about two hours to complete and requires a little bit of upper body strength at a couple of points to climb up rocks with a rope.

This fantastic trail offers hikers a unique experience that’s quite different from other Jordan hiking trails, providing an exciting beginner-level canyoning adventure for those seeking a little bit of thrill-seeking.

The trail is typically open from April through October but check with Wild Jordan before you go, as the trail can close during the season if water levels get too high. It’s a great way to escape the Jordan heat and there are plenty of other hikes, such as the Canyon Trail, nearby for more advanced hikers.

So if you’re looking for unforgettable hiking in Jordan, the Wadi Mujib Siq Trail is a perfect choice.

Wadi Rum – Jebel Burdah Rock Bridge Hike

Wadi Rum Bridge

Duration: 3-4 hours

Distance: 1.25 miles/2 km (hiking and scrambling)

Difficulty Level: Moderately Difficult

Wadi Rum is known as the “Valley of the Moon” because of its lunar-like landscapes, which have been featured in movies like The Martian.

Wadi Rum is an incredible place to go hiking in Jordan, with a great variety of shorter and multi-day treks on offer, so there is something for all levels. A guide will know the area best and be able to take you on the safest and most rewarding trails in Wadi Rum available according to your skill level.

For advanced hikers looking for an adventure of a lifetime, the hike (and scramble) to the Jebel Burdah Rock Bridge in Wadi Rum is a must-do. This natural arch is one of the highest in the world.

It’s one of the more strenuous Jordan hikes with some technically difficult areas, so only those with hiking experience and not afraid of heights should attempt it. It’s not a hike for inexperienced hikers or those with a fear of heights, as some sections require technical skill and physical fitness.

But if you do make the journey, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Wadi Rum desert!

To immerse yourself in the experience, consider staying at a Bedouin camp overnight. Not only will you get to experience authentic desert life, but camping without any light pollution also gives you the chance to enjoy the stars above that much more.

Mount Nebo – One of the Shortest Hikes in Jordan

Duration: Only a few minutes

Distance: Very, very short from the parking lot

Difficulty Level: Easy

Mount Nebo , also known as ‘ Siyagha ’, is a treasured mountain located near Madaba in Jordan.

This holy site is said to be where Moses lived out his final days and viewed the Promised Land from afar.

From the summit of this easy hike, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Dead Sea, the West Bank, and the Jordan River. On a clear day, you can even spot Bethlehem or Jerusalem in the distance. Many travelers say these are the best views of their trip to Jordan – and that’s saying something!

Reaching Mount Nebo is an easy 10-15 minute car ride from Madab a and there is an entrance fee (about USD 3). You could drive most of the way to the top if you don’t want to do much walking. Once you’re there, there is a visitor’s center, cafe, and plenty of space to enjoy the views.

If you are feeling adventurous, some people do complete the much longer and more difficult hike from the Dead Sea to Mount Nebo !

So whatever your skill level or motivation may be, a Mount Nebo hike is sure to end with breathtaking views.

Wadi Ghuweir Trail in the Dana Biosphere Reserve

Duration: 5-8 hours (can turn around any time to shorten the hike)

Distance: 10 miles/16 km

If you’re looking for an amazing experience trekking in Jordan, one that is still a relatively off-the-beaten-path, be sure to check out the Wadi Ghuweir Trail in the Dana Biosphere Reserve.

This Jordan hike offers stunning views of the beautiful canyon, with a lot of greenery, and is a great way to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of Jordan. It is a 10-mile/16-km one-way hike that takes 5-8 hours, with most hikers getting a ride at the end. Some choose to just do a portion of the trail and turn back.

There are some tough sections, and some climbing over large boulders, and the trail isn’t always clearly marked, so it’s best to go with a guide.

The trail is sometimes inaccessible due to rain or mud, and susceptible to flash-flooding, so double-check trail conditions before you go. There are some rare plants and animals like the sand cat or the Syrian wolf that you may have the opportunity to see.

Don’t forget to bring water shoes, a hat, sunscreen, snacks and plenty of water. And of course, your camera, captures the stunning views!

If you are looking for a challenging yet rewarding hike in Jordan, the Wadi Ghuweir Trail should be at the top of your list. There are plenty of other trail options in the Dana Biosphere Reserve as well, for hikers of all levels.

The incredible natural beauty and the opportunity to spot some rare animals will make it an unforgettable Jordan hiking experience.

Ajloun Forest Reserve – Several Trails for All Levels

Ajloun Forest

Duration: 30 minutes to full-day hike

Distance: shortest trail 1.25 miles/2km to longest trail 10.5miles/18km

Difficulty Level: Trails of All Levels available

There is no shortage of opportunities to hike in Jordan. One popular hiking destination is the Ajloun Forest Reserve , which offers trails of all lengths and difficulties. Trekking in this protected nature reserve will be very different from most of the other Jordan hikes.

The entrance fees are not included in the Jordan Pass and go towards maintaining the park.

The reserve is located about an hour north of Amman and is home to a variety of wildlife, including the Striped Hyena and Crested Porcupine.

If you want to stay overnight, you can stay in the park’s wooden cabins. Or, you may decide to visit as a day trip from Amman or Jerash , and depending on the length of the trail you choose, you may also have time to visit nearby Ajloun Castle.

Some of the hikes require a guide, while others are easy to do on your own. No matter your skill level, you’ll find something suitable for you in the Ajloun Forest Reserve. Be sure to check trail conditions before beginning your hike as some trails in Jordan may be closed due to muddy conditions.

The Jordan Trail – Most Epic Hike in Jordan

Duration: 40 days

Distance: 400 miles/644 km

Difficulty Level: Badass

This epic long-distance route, cared for by the Jordan Trail Association, spans from Umm Qais , on the northern border, to the shores of the Red Sea in the south, and for obvious reasons, makes the list of the best hikes in Jordan.

At over 400 miles in length, it takes an average of 40 days to complete but can be done in sections if you don’t have that much time. The Dana to Petra section is one of the most popular, as detailed earlier in this article.

The Jordan Trail passes through some very rugged and untouched landscapes and includes plenty of serious hiking as well as plenty of wild camping.

Recommend going with a guide on this one – it’s not for beginners!

Along the way, you’ll pass through 75 villages and towns where you can grab a bite to eat and rest overnight and get to know the culture of Jordan. It’s an unforgettable experience trekking in Jordan that will certainly challenge even the most experienced hikers.

Happy Hiking in Jordan!

Hiking in Jordan takes you to some of the most exceptional historical sites you can find, including the incredible city of Petra! In my experience, Jordan is often oner-looked by tourists as it is perceived to be an unsafe country. In reality, Jordan is a safe country for tourists, and the people of Jordan are among some of the most friendly and hospitable.

It is also an incredible country to hike. To correct the misconceptions about Jordan, I’ve created this guide to the best hikes in Jordan to show off its natural beauty, scenic wonder and historical monuments.

Quick Tip: Check the Muslim calendar for holidays such as Ramadan. Most Jordan hiking trails will still be open, but services may not be available or will be limited.

The route is easy to navigate and passes through 52 villages and towns where you can grab a bite to eat and rest overnight. The trail encompasses many shorter hikes to do in Jordan, and most of the Petra Trails. If you are not up to the full 40-day adventure then it is possible to only do sections of the hike. The Dana to Petra section has been classified as one of the best 15 hikes in the world by National Geographic! Starting at the visitors center, this trail is a total of 4kms one way. It starts by following a narrow gorge for 1.2km until you reach Petra. The trail continues to the Treasury which is only a short 2km hike from the center. The trail is flat and downhill, so it is fairly easy. Heading back to the center will be uphill though so keep that in mind.

Continuing on the trail past the Treasury (the lower Siq), you’ll pass the Royal Tombs, Street of Facades and to the Great Temple.

Jordan Hiking FAQ

When is the best time to go hiking in jordan.

Hiking in Jordan is best during spring (March and April) and autumn (October and November) . However, the ideal time to hike can vary by region as the north is cooler than the south. March and April are best in the southern regions when the temperatures are comfortable, the forests are green, streams are flowing, and the flowers are blooming. In the northern regions these months would be February and March. You could also hike during September and November, but flowers and greenery would have died out over the hotter months. The hottest months are late-May to mid-September, and most consider this time too hot to trek. Winter is also good to hike, but you will probably have occasional rain and sometimes even snow. Besides that, it’s rather pleasant to hike in Jordan during winter.

What to consider when hiking in Jordan

You can do some of these hikes self-guided. However, it is important to consider the weather condition at all times and never go unprepared on a hike. This is especially true if you are on your own.

Some of the areas are very remote, dangerous, have no mobile coverage and limited water resources. A must: the epic Jordan Trail

With the implementation of the Jordan Trail a few years back, Jordan has seen an increase in the alternative- and eco-tourism. The trail runs throughout the entire country from north to south over 8 regions on a length of about 670 km.

One of the most cited sections of the trail is the one from the Dana Biosphere Reserve to Petra . It has been highly praised by hikers across the world and even in the National Geographic!

On a 3-4 day hike, you hike through different eco-systems along with magical landscapes and ever-changing vegetation.

So let’s jump right into one of the best hikes in Jordan.

1. Dana to Petra – Hiking through a Biosphere Reserve to one of the Seven World Wonders

Where to stay: Feynan Ecolodge

the best hiking trails in jordan, dana bio reserve

As mentioned above, this is the top section of the Jordan Trail. It is just loaded with diversity, the difference in elevation, stunning landscapes, and different biospheres.

Usually, you will embark on this 3-4 day journey on a guided hike. There are different routes and you walk through rough unmarked terrain with no mobile reception, water, or shelter.

Different tour operators provide options where you will carry all the needs or they take care of everything for you.

Hiking through Dana Nature Reserve

The journey starts at Dana , which is located beautifully at the top of a canyon. You will then descend for about 900 meters on the first day into the valley. The next few days, you pass by different climate zones, extraordinary scenery, valleys, and rough terrain.

This hike offers you the complete spectrum of Jordan’s diversity. After passing through some small villages and the Wadi Araba Desert , you can finally enter Petra from the backside.

From there you reach the monastery, a stunning highlight apart from the Treasury . The best thing is probably that it allows you to connect with nature and the locals in that area.

You are truly on your own with very few people in an amazing setting for a couple of days and it ends with a true highlight. No wonder that it is considered one of the best hiking trails in Jordan!

Hiking Petra from the back door

The hike to Petra from the back door is wonderful and you avoid the large crowds in Petra . Additionally, you can go down instead of climbing up hundreds of steps until you reach the monastery.

Most of the visitors will arrive at the monastery in the heat of the day, only to go back all the way again. You can enjoy the stunning views of the monuments and the Wadi Araba Desert with only a few people. Then you make your way down through the ancient city of Petra .

Everyone else is climbing up the stairs while you descend. You still have enough time to wander around and gaze at this incredible world wonder built by the Nabataeans (an Arab people who inhabited northern Arabia and the Southern Levant in antiquity).

All in all, you should have a moderate level of fitness to complete this section.

2. Have an Adventure Hike at Wadi Mujib

Where to stay: Ma’In Hot Springs *****

hiking wadi mujib trail, best treks in jordan

Wadi Mujib is one of the most popular hiking destinations starting from the Dead Sea , and that’s for a reason. Wadi Mujib Siq Trail , part of the Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve , is packed with adrenaline-pumping action. Prepare to get wet up to the chin!

You will depart from the Wadi Mujib Adventure Center . It is located a few minutes from the hotel area at the Dead Sea , the lowest point on Earth!

If you come on your own, you can park your car there and get prepared for your hike, or better, swim.

It’s considered one of the top hiking trails in Jordan and absolute a must-do!

Wadi Mujib is strictly 18+, requires swimming ability, and is subject to an entrance fee of currently 18 JOD (25 USD).

Prepare to Hike Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve

Better leave everything in the car, or better in Amman , or your hotel if you can. You won’t need anything other than swimwear and shoes, not even sunglasses or a hat!

From the beginning of the canyon, you will descend deeper and deeper into the water. You will swim against the current and some passages might be demanding, but there are people to help as well as ropes and ladders.

Make sure to stick to the indicated route and observe the signs. If you do so, you shall be safe.

Hiking and Swimming a stunning canyon in Jordan

The hike itself will probably take around 2-3 hours return, depending on your speed and how long you will rest at the waterfall, which is the final turning point. It’s thus perfect to bring your sustainable swimwear along.

You will then return the same way and going back most likely will be faster as you go with the current. You can then just relax and float in the stream, gazing at the steep rocky walls surrounding you in the canyon.

The landscape is stunning and it is an adventure very different from any other in Jordan. Wadi Mujib is only open from the beginning of April to the end of October.

3. Experience the lush Greens in the North: Hiking to King Talal Dam

Where to stay: W Amman *****

hiking in jordan, trek northern jordan

Jordan is one of the most water-scarce countries in the world, so it is fair when expecting the majority of the country to be desert-like.

However, Jordan also has a few dams to collect and preserve water, especially in the northern area. One of these is King Talal Dam about a 45-minute drive from Amman .

You can hike to or from the dam as one of the routes on the Jordan Trail . It will lead you through beautiful open green landscapes, areas covered with trees while finally reaching the huge dam.

In springtime, it will be filled with lots of water from the winter, and plants are green all around. You can walk over the dam wall and have a stunning look over the surroundings from the top of the hills.

It is a lovely picnic spot as well and you might even see some families having a BBQ nearby.

The views are fabulous and if the weather conditions allow, you’ll also overlook the Jordan valley and even spot Palestine ! It’s a real must on any Jordan itinerary !

4. Explore Jordan’s highest mountain while Climbing Jebel Um Adaami, Wadi Rum

Where to stay: Wadi Rum Quiet Village

best hiking trails, wadi rum hiking holiday

Wadi Rum itself is for sure a highlight of Jordan and probably one of the most stunning places I have ever seen in the world! The absence of civilization, the massive rock formations, and an endless sea of yellow or red sand make Wadi Rum an awesome place!

You won’t find many animals, and apart from the Bedouin camps and the tourists visiting the desert. There is no life, no cars. It is amazingly quiet so that you will have the luxury to enjoy pure silence!

That together with pretty much no lights also give you the chance to watch a stunning sky filled with stars and shooting stars. While most of the people opt for just one night and do the obligatory camel- or jeep tour , you can experience much more in Wadi Rum !

Activities in Wadi Rum

Despite some 1-2 day tours, sandboarding, hot air balloon flights, quad biking or horse riding, Wadi Rum offers a couple of climbing possibilities on its mountains. These include Jebel Rum , Jebel Khazali , and Jebel Um Adaami (Wadi Rum ’s highest mountain).

You will need to do this with a guide, as pretty much anything in Wadi Rum , to avoid getting lost in the desert!

Keep in mind that Wadi Rum stretches over an unbelievably large area, with no mobile reception and limited water resources, so you need to know where you go! – Book here trips to Wadi Rum

Hiking and Climbing in Wadi Rum

Many of the Bedouin camps that offer overnight stays also offer other experiences and tours. Usually, these will be offered for small groups at a price between 125 to 170 USD, depending on the group size.

The hike is reasonably easy to moderate and does not require difficult climbing. It is a 3-4 hour journey back and forth.

However, you can, of course, take your time and also have lunch there if you wish to arrange that. On top of the mountain, you will have a stunning view over Wadi Rum and even parts of Saudi Arabia .

5. Hike near Oak and Pine Trees at Ajloun Forest Reserve

Where to stay: Mountain Breeze Lodge & Resort ****

best walking trails in jordan, northern jordan, ajloun

Ajloun Forest Reserve is one of several protected nature reserves managed by the Royal Society for Nature Conservation (RSCN) . It is located about a 1-hour drive north of Amman .

The visitor center features a restaurant with stunning views of the reserve and shops that offer products created by the local community.

That includes the biscuit house, the soap house, the nature shop, and also a place where you can learn to write Arabic calligraphy.

Next to the visitor center are the wooden cabins, where you can stay overnight. They are beautifully located right next to the forest of oak and pine trees as well as wild strawberry and wild pistachio.

From there you can embark on several hikes. There is a variety from an easy 1-2 hour walk around the site to more elaborate hikes within the reserve. One of these is a hike to Ajloun Castle , which was built as a stronghold against the crusaders on ruins of an old monastery.

Most of these are offered as guided hikes by Wild Jordan that manages all the adventures and tours in Jordan’s other nature reserves. It is a pleasant change to the deserts in the east or the south.

6. Refresh at Wadi Al-Hasa near the Southern Dead Sea

Where to stay: Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea *****

hiking near dead sea, best trekking trails in jordan

Apart from the famous Wadi Mujib , there are several other valleys that you can access from the Dead Sea .

Wadi Al-Hasa is close to the southern tip of the Dead Sea , a bit remote and therefore not very frequented. That is also because it is a 2-hour drive from Amman and less action loaded than Wadi Mujib .

However, it is not less interesting and that’s why it is on this list. There is no entrance fee and you can do it self-guided if you know where to start.

Make the most of your time and visit the area with a guided tour . – Check rates here

Hiking the Valley near the Dead Sea

You will start a few hundred meters below sea level, so it might be extremely warm! Once you reach the wadi (Arabic for “valley”), you should be prepared to get your feet wet!

Like anywhere, water levels will depend on the season. Even in summer, I experienced a nice, rather strong water flow in Wadi Al-Hasa . You will walk through a canyon that narrows, the further you will go.

There are plenty of shadows and the sun won’t hit you all the time.

I still recommend going as early as possible, to avoid too hot weather. It also allows you to go further inside the valley before you need to return unless you opt for a 2-day hike with overnight camping.

While you go through the wadi, you will walk in waist-deep water at some point or even deeper, if you like to. It is really fun and enjoyable, as you splash through warm waters.

To the left and the right, you see beautiful steep rock formations painted with yellow and red lines.

7. Hike Wadi Al-Rayan being Surrounded by Thousand-year-old Olive Trees

Where to stay: Fairmont Amman *****

hiking in jordan, hiking near amman

Wadi Al-Rayan is a lovely valley located about a 1-hour drive north of Amman . It is one of my favorite destinations in Jordan . When you go hiking in March, you will see blooming flowers, green grass, and maybe some shepherds with their goats.

You will walk along a small creek that you might have to cross a few times. That being said, water levels depend on the season and the rainfall during the warmer months.

The best about this hike though, is that you will see a large amount of very old, huge olive trees.

Some of the trees date back a few hundred or even more than a thousand years! To the left and right, you will see stone walls until the valley opens up more to the end.

It is an easy walk of around 7 km. In the end, there are some wonderful picnic spots. When hiking unguided, which is possible, then usually transportation becomes an issue unless you want to go the same way back.

However, you can arrange tours for many of these or similar hikes in Jordan. – Check rates & reviews here

Jordan Hiking Adventure (Wadi Mujib, Jabal Umm AlDami, Petra & The Dead Sea)

Discover Jordan's 'Grand Canyon' on the Siq trail, visit Petra and reach the top of the tallest mountain in the country (Jabal Umm AlDami). End off your trip with a swim in the dead sea.

Arrival in Amman - one of the oldest cities in the world, inhabited since the bronze age. These days, the city is becoming more modern but retains its character and history. Depending on your time of arrival you may have time to explore the city by yourself as there are no planned activities for Day 1.

image_5XGDYKXLH9K7YHLT

After a traditional breakfast, you'll head over to Wadi Mujib for a hike along the Siq Trail. Passing one of the canyons' highest waterfalls along the way, you'll be treated to incredible scenery as you follow the river through the gorge. Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming. This is an ideal walk to take slowly and enjoy the cool water and shade, especially in the heat of the summer. After lunch, your guide will transfer you to Little Petra to visit the site located in Al Beida.

image_8BUB2KV2CDWJGGCF

You'll start the day by entering Petra via ‘The Back Door’ avoiding most of the tourists. Following the Nabataean route, you make your way down a good trail into Petra. Just beyond, carved into the cliff face, ‘The Monastery’ suddenly comes into view. There is a Bedouin café if you would like refreshments. Nabataean steps lead down into ancient Petra; past ‘The Treasury’ and though the famous ‘Petra Siq’ to the shops, cafés and hotels of Wadi Musa.

After having a traditional breakfast in Wadi Rum, you'll head to the foot of the Umm AlDami mountain - the highest mountain in Jordan. The hike to the summit takes around 2 hours and offers spectacular views of the Wadi Rum Desert and Saudi Arabia. After a desert cooked lunch, you'll make your way back to your camp in Wadi Rum.

image_L8RTX3YHYPWUVQN3

Today you'll drive to the lowest point on earth to float and relax in the Dead Sea (423m below sea level) - also known as the salt sea. Enjoy the sunshine and view whilst trying out an invigorating mud bath to cleanse the skin. In the evening your guide will drive you back to Amman.

image_HUQMXB3D8J54QTUQ

Sadly, all great things must come to an end. For those flying out already, it is generally recommended to leave Amman at least 4 hours prior to your departure. We wish you a safe flight, and hope you will return back home with many wonderful memories of your time in Jordan!

Our family had an amazing adventure to see the best of Jordan. We had excellent support and communication from Dania and Omar was a safe and knowledgeable driver. An unforgettable experience.

Had an incredible time on this trip. Our accommodation was great and our tour guide, Motaz Zghoul was absolutely fantastic - incredibly knowledgable, funny and never missed with a recommendation. Our driver Nazem was always on time and also fantastic. 10/10 would recommend.

What an amazing hike! Every day had new, beautiful views, different challenges and more things to learn. By the time we got to Petra, we'd been so immersed in the environment and knowledge that it felt like going back in time, in a way that arriving by bus will never be able to accomplish. The support staff made our lives easy, from setting up and breaking down camp, feeding us well, carrying water to refill along the way, and ensuring Bedouin tea was always at the ready! Our guide Motaz was a fountain of knowledge, from history to nature to culture. He was open and kind, and really brought the group together. With a group of 15 people from around the world, he made us seamlessly feel like a family. I don't have enough good things to say about his care and generosity throughout the experience. If you're considering this hike, just do it. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

A complete guide to hiking the epic Jordan Trail

The Crusader-built Al-Karak Castle dates back to the 12th century.

Distance : 50miles/four days Difficulty : Moderate

Distance : 39 miles/four days Difficulty : Moderate

Jordan’s only microbrewery, Carakale, is in Fuheis, just south of As-Salt.

jordan hiking trip

Distance : 47 miles/four days Difficulty : Difficult

Covering almost 200 square miles, the Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan’s largest nature reserve.

5. Al-Karak to Dana

Distance : 52 miles/four days Difficulty : Moderate

Distance : 52.2 miles/four days Difficulty : Moderate

Thanks to its blood red sands, Wadi Rum has been nicknamed 'Mars on Earth'.

7. Petra to Wadi Rum

Distance : 56.3 miles/five days Difficulty : Moderate to difficult

Petra, believed to have been established in 312BC, is one of the world's most iconic archeological ...

Petra, believed to have been established in 312BC, is one of the world's most iconic archeological sites.

8. Wadi Rum to Aqaba

Distance : 67 miles/six days Difficulty : Easy to moderate

The capital, Amman, is known as the marble city as nearly every building has a facade of white marble. But beyond the city lies the expensive Wadi Rum desert with strange rock formations and sand dunes. This apparent wasteland dotted with traditional camps of Bedouins, peoples who know better than to see a wasteland here and have nomadically in the desert for generations. The sheer vastness of this land is inspiring and begs for adventure and exploration. And of course, you can’t visit Jordan without a visit to its most famous sight: Petra. One of the seven wonders of the world, this ancient Nabatean city is truly a sight to behold. While the peoples that dwelt here lived in simple caves, they carved elaborate tombs that still survive today. Stroll through this one-way-in natural canyon-fortress, see dozens of carvings, and gaze at the treasury. You can feel like Indiana Jones while riding a camel or explore some of the lesser known trails in the area. Little Petra also is a treat to see and there is much more to the traditional Petra site than the treasury, both on the path to it and as you continue back into the wilderness. Jordan also shares a shore of the Dead Sea, making it the perfect place to stop off for a float at the lowest place on earth.

Jordan is characterized by extreme weather and the shoulder seasons are typically best for traveling. The desert can be very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer (while simultaneously being very cold at night in the summer). Visitors should also be aware of increased security in the Middle East and should expect some waits at airport securities. Our trip that Intrepid runs in Jordan is an active hiking vacation where you can visit the sites mentioned above as well as many more. The trip is quite active and you will even get to stay at a desert Bedouin camp. Be prepared for some serious trekking, with some options for off-trail hiking on sand dunes and in Petra. Explore this trip’s itinerary and details as you plan your adventure in the beautiful Jordan.

The Jordan Trail: A Guide To One Of The Most Beautiful Hikes In The World

by Sarah Fay | Jan 22, 2024 | Destinations , National Parks , Nature , Travel | 0 comments

Petra the crown jewel of the Jordan trail hike.

When I originally signed up to hike for 5 days on the Jordan Trail, I couldn’t find much in terms of articles on what to prepare for. There were not many solo female travelers I saw hiking for days on end to head to Petra. I wanted to know what to bring, how difficult it was, and that is why I created this guide.

I had faith that I was in shape enough to hike what was classed as moderate hikes each day. My stamina is what I was nervous about. However, I surprised myself and found one of the best ways to experience Jordan. No gate keeping here experience the Jordan Trail even if you only do part of it. Most people come to Jordan and hit the highlights visiting the Dead Sea, Petra, and Wadi Rum. I would see these places, but I wanted to make it an adventure.

I honestly was nervous about attempting a five-day intense trip through Jordan hiking, camping, staying at eco-lodges, and dealing with the hot the desert in October. However, I surprised myself and believe it is doable with the right local guides.

What is the Jordan Trail?

The Jordan Trail is a historic trade route that passed north to south through Jordan. It is long and arduous, which is why I decided to go with Experience Jordan. I was going outside of my comfort zone to do a multi day hike in the Middle East, but it would be a highlight of my hiking career and travel tales. The Jordan Trail was established in 2015 encouraging slow travel that connects travelers with local communities along the 400 miles of trail. It begins in the north from Umm Quais to Aqaba on the Red Sea.

While I did not get to enjoy the entire 40 days on the trail that passes through 52 villages and towns. I enjoyed one of the most popular sections from Dana Biosphere Reserve to Petra.

Sarah fay with local bedouin experience learning about arabic coffee tradition on the Jordan Trail.

The Best Sections of the Jordan Trail

What I love about the Jordan Trail is it is divided between 8 sections. So you can break it up and it gives you an excuse to keep coming back to Jordan. I already know I want to revisit the Jordan Trail to see other sections. I will give you a brief overview of the Jordan Trail for each section and go into more detail on the section I took from Dana to Petra and my visit to Wadi Rum.

Before You Go To Jordan

When you go to Jordan there are some things you should know. There is a visa you need to get to enter Jordan and for each country check your requirements, but for USA citizens like myself, I was able to get the Jordan Pass.

What is the Jordan Pass?

jordan hiking trip

Key features of the Jordan Pass include:

  • Entry to Tourist Sites: The pass grants access to a wide range of tourist attractions, including archaeological sites, museums, and historical landmarks. This includes iconic destinations such as Petra, Jerash, and Wadi Rum.
  • Visa Waiver: Holders of the Jordan Pass may benefit from a waiver of the regular visa fee, making it easier for tourists to enter the country.
  • Convenience: The pass is digital, allowing visitors to easily download and carry it on their smartphones. This eliminates the need for physical tickets and streamlines the entry process at various attractions.
  • Cost Savings: The Jordan Pass is structured to provide financial savings for tourists, as it covers the entry fees to multiple sites. This can be particularly advantageous for travelers planning to visit several attractions during their stay.
  • Validity Period: The pass is typically valid for a certain number of consecutive days, encouraging visitors to explore and make the most of their time in Jordan.

Double-check the visa requirements for your country.

Would I hike the Jordan Trail solo?

I would not advise hiking the Jordan Trail solo as there were no clearly defined trails and in different areas a local guide was used that showed us the way. Not only that they would tell us about where they are from, the food, and even make tea with the traditional Jordan hospitality that made me fall in love with the country.

Also, as a solo female traveler in Jordan and hiking on an overnight backpacking trip in Jordan, it made me feel safer in a group.

Why the Jordan Trail?

There is something so rewarding about traveling from point A to B on foot. The Jordan Trail takes you past landscapes that feel like you are on another planet. It brings you into contact with the local Bedouin, and communities along the Jordan trail. It gives you a unique perspective of traveling to a new country slowly and sustainably. Slow travel allows you to never take for granted where you are in the moment

North To South Sections of the Jordan Trail

Chiefly, hiking the Jordan trail will create a once in a lifetime experience to learn about the natural and cultural landscape of Jordan. Plus, it will have you in shape when you leave!

There are all different types of ways to hike the Jordan Trail as well as different types of accommodation.

Umm Qais to Ajloun 50 miles 4 days

The beginning of the Jordan trail begins in the Umm Quais and can be reached by Amman by bus. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to Ajloun from Amman.

Embark on a four-day adventure that seamlessly weaves history and nature along the 50-mile stretch from Umm Qais to Ajloun. Your journey commences in Umm Qais, surrounded by the echoes of ancient civilizations. The Greco-Roman ruins of Gadara stand testament to centuries gone by, offering panoramic views of the Sea of Galilee. As you traverse Wadi Zubia on day two, nature takes center stage. Lush valleys adorned with wildflowers and freshwater springs provide a refreshing contrast, inviting you to savor the tranquility of this natural oasis.

Continuing southward, day three leads you to the secluded Mar Elias Monastery in the Ajloun Highlands. This spiritual retreat offers a pause to connect with Jordan’s religious heritage amidst stunning landscapes. Finally, on day four, Ajloun Castle emerges on the horizon—a majestic fortress perched atop hills with commanding views. Your journey isn’t just a physical feat; it’s a cultural odyssey, a tapestry of time, and an exploration of Jordan’s rich heritage.

Ajloun to As-Salt 39 miles 4 days

Embark on a four-day exploration from Ajloun to As-Salt along the Jordan Trail, where history and nature converge seamlessly. Begin your journey at the formidable Ajloun Castle, perched on hills that offer commanding views. Day one takes you to the tranquil Mar Elias Monastery, a spiritual retreat in the Ajloun Highlands, immersing you in the region’s religious heritage.

The following days unfold through the enchanting landscapes of Wadi Zubia, with its lush valleys and freshwater springs, leading you to the historic heart of As-Salt. Here, Ottoman architecture, bustling markets, and charming streets invite exploration. Engage with locals, savor traditional cuisine, and let the Jordan Trail guide you through a captivating blend of history and nature

As-Salt to Wadi Zarqa Ma’in 52 miles 4 days

This section of the Jordan Trail begins an unforgettable adventure along the As-Salt to Wadi Zarqa Ma’in section of the Jordan Trail. The hike is four-days spanning 52 miles. Starting in the charming town of As-Salt with its historic Ottoman architecture, hikers set out on a journey that weaves through rolling hills, quaint villages, and terraced fields. Here you will find a picturesque panorama of Jordan’s diverse landscapes. Each step brings a discovery, leading to the grand finale at Wadi Zarqa Ma’in, renowned for its hot springs and breathtaking geological features.

Three Wadis to Al-Karak 47 miles 4 days

One thing I love about the Jordan trail is it weaves through the tapestry of terrain and true gems that make Jordan special both historically and naturally. On this section of the Jordan Trail hikers begin at the southern rim of the Wadi Wala and follow the plateau until the descent into the Grand Canyon of Jordan- Wadi Mujib.

As you descend you will see highlights such as the ruins of Magdelina, and the impressive Al-Karak castle. Al Karak is a historic crusader castle and gives you a glimpse of the many historical figures and events that happened on the land you hike along the Jordan Trail.

Al-Karak to Dana 52 miles 4 days

The mesmerizing hiking expedition is not for the faint-hearted, but breaking it up is an option. I am glad I chose it. Now you have arrived in the heart of Jordan as you traverse the enchanting section of the Jordan Trail from Al-Karak to Dana. Starting in the historically rich city of Al-Karak, where the imposing crusader castle echoes tales of centuries past, the trail unfolds like a narrative through time and terrain. As hikers journey through the captivating landscapes, they witness the transition from Al-Karak’s cultural heritage to the breathtaking natural beauty of Dana, characterized by its scenic canyons and panoramic vistas. This trail not only presents a physical challenge but also serves as a captivating exploration of Jordan’s diverse tapestry, seamlessly blending history, culture, and the raw beauty of the great outdoors along the iconic Jordan Trail.

Dana to Petra 52.2 miles 4 days

My journey hiking the Jordan Trail begins here in arguably the best section of the Jordan Trail and one that you should make the time for on your Jordan Itinerary. I will begin this by saying we drove from Amman to get to Dana where I got to stay at the Dana Biosphere Reserve in Jordan. This is the largest of Jordan’s nature reserves, and is amazing to be able to hike here and wake up here like I did. We stayed in canvas tents, not luxury by any means, but they were comfortable. There were also restrooms and a place where we had dinner outside, as well as a Bedouin tent to have tea and enjoy a fire at night.

The best part of the Jordan trail though is not having to always stay in a tent if you don’t want to. There is also a nearby village where some hikers could decide they want to stay at the Dana Guest House in the Dana Village. However, I highly recommend the Rummana camp which is located directly inside the Dana Reserve.

Staying in Dana Reserve you can enjoy a dark sky to see the stars, explore trails that lead you to caves, and experience a beautiful sunset over the valley. The landscape will make you feel like you are on another planet.

The immersive journey along the Dana to Petra section of the Jordan Trail is a trek that spans approximately 50 kilometers and typically takes around 4 days to complete. The trail offers a moderate to challenging level of difficulty, with diverse terrains ranging from rocky canyons to desert landscapes, providing a rewarding adventure for hikers.

Starting in Dana, a village perched on the edge of a nature reserve, the trail winds through the spectacular Dana Biosphere Reserve. This section is known for its diverse ecosystems, showcasing everything from lush valleys to rugged mountains, providing a habitat for various plant and animal species.

My favorite part: Hike Wadi Ghweir

This part of the trail truly surprised me and I was nervous as this day we hiked 17 plus km to get to Feynman Lodge. However, while it was one of the more grueling days for hiking between the heat, and the amount of water we had to carry it was one of the most rewarding.

Climbing down into the wadi or canyon we went from the most arid landscape to a lush green area and oasis between the canyon walls as we hiked towards our reward of a stay at the luxurious Feynman Ecolodge.

This is a noteworthy highlight of the trip as it incorporated the local community as well as gave me ample rest to continue the journey. The Feynan Ecolodge is an eco-friendly retreat offering a unique blend of sustainability and comfort amid the desert landscape. It is run by the Royal Society of Nature Conservation whose mission is to maintain the beauty and conservation of the wildlife and natural resources of Jordan.

A Magical Local Ecolodge Awaits

This eco-lodge is run by solar power, is pretty much self-sufficient growing the vegetarian food they cook, and also incorporates the local Feynan community of Bedouins in the area. Each day a local woman would bake all of the amazing Jordanian bread fresh for the lodge. I got to participate in learning about the Arabic bedouin coffee tradition in the village as a part of my stay.

After getting washed up and enjoying the beautiful candle-lit room, I headed to join the group for a Candlelit evening. The locally sourced cuisine is a nice touch knowing they support a local family that bakes bread for them and stargazing opportunities make Feynan an unforgettable stop on the journey.

From Feynman to Petra

As hikers continue, the trail leads to the iconic rose-red city of Petra. This archaeological marvel, hidden within the stunning rock formations, unveils ancient tombs, temples, and facades carved into the vibrant pink sandstone cliffs. The journey not only challenges physical limits but also immerses trekkers in the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty of Jordan, making the Dana to Petra section a truly transformative experience along the Jordan Trail.

I could go on and on about Petra and all of the amazing things to do there, but that will be for another blog post.

However, a surprise for me along the trail to Petra was learning about Little Petra which was on the way to Petra.

Petra to Wadi Rum 56.3 miles 5 days (moderate to difficult)

After visiting Little Petra we slept wild camping close to the back door of Petra. We spend the morning exploring Petra which could take you days to fully explore to hike and see all of the nooks and crannies.

The hike leads to the legendary Wadi Rum, a protected desert wilderness that captivates with its towering sandstone mountains and vibrant red dunes. Trekking through this surreal Martian-like landscape, adventurers experience the timeless beauty that has inspired poets and explorers alike. Bedouin camps nestled amidst the stunning scenery offer a glimpse into traditional desert life, allowing hikers to immerse themselves in the rich culture of the region. The Petra to Wadi Rum trail is not just a physical feat; it’s a cultural and visual feast, showcasing the remarkable diversity of Jordan’s natural wonders along the iconic Jordan Trail.

Wadi Rum to Aqaba 67 miles 6 days (easy to moderate)

The section of the Jordan Trail from Wadi Rum to Aqaba covers a distance of approximately 60 kilometers, making it a moderate to challenging trek that typically takes around 4 to 5 days to complete. Hikers will encounter diverse terrains, starting with the otherworldly landscapes of Wadi Rum, known for its towering sandstone formations and vast red sand dunes. Navigating through this surreal desert scenery, adventurers experience the unique geological wonders that have earned Wadi Rum its distinction as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As the trail progresses towards Aqaba, hikers will witness a transition from the desert environment to the coastal allure of the Red Sea. The journey culminates in Aqaba, where you can enjoy vibrant markets, historical sites and explore the marine wonders of the Red Sea. The final leg of the trip can be enjoyed with world class snorkeling or diving. With a diverse range of landscapes and cultural experiences, the Wadi Rum to Aqaba section offers an immersive and rewarding adventure.

How long does it take to walk the Jordan Trail?

The duration to walk the entire Jordan Trail depends on various factors, including the specific sections chosen, individual hiking pace, and the level of fitness. The full Jordan Trail spans approximately 650 kilometers (around 400 miles), and completing the entire trail typically takes around 36 to 40 days for an average hiker.

Do you need a guide for the Jordan Trail?

jordan hiking trip

While it’s not mandatory to have a guide for the Jordan Trail, it depends on individual preferences and experience. The trail is well-marked with official signs, and many hikers successfully navigate it independently. Experienced trekkers comfortable with map reading and basic navigation skills may opt for a self-guided adventure. However, less experienced hikers or those seeking cultural insights may benefit from hiring a local guide who can enhance the experience, share regional knowledge, and assist with logistics. The decision to use a guide depends on the level of comfort with independent hiking, desired cultural immersion, and personal preferences.

What is the best part of the Jordan Trail?

Determining the “best” part of the Jordan Trail is hard to do because each has its own merits. However, for me, it is the section I did where you get to see Dana, Petra, and Wadi Rum. , This 60-kilometer journey showcases the surreal landscapes of Wadi Rum, with towering sandstone formations and ancient petroglyphs. The blend of desert wonders, cultural richness, and the Red Sea’s vibrant beauty creates an unforgettable and diverse hiking experience, making the Petra to Wadi Rum section a highlight for many adventurers on the Jordan Trail. While I did not get to finish the entire Jordan Trail I will be back. I want to visit Aqaba next.

Where to stay on the Jordan Trail?

Furthermore, if you are searching for accommodations along the Jordan Trail vary, offering a range of options to suit different preferences and budgets. Hikers can find a mix of guesthouses, campsites, and Bedouin-style accommodations along the trail. Notable places to consider include:

  • Feynan Ecolodge: Located near Dana, this eco-friendly lodge provides a unique and sustainable stay in the desert.
  • Wadi Rum Camps: In Wadi Rum, various Bedouin-style camps offer a traditional experience amidst the stunning desert landscape.
  • Petra Accommodations: Petra has a range of hotels and guesthouses catering to different budgets, providing convenient options for hikers exploring this iconic site.
  • Aqaba Hotels: Aqaba, at the southern end of the trail, offers a variety of hotels along the Red Sea coast for a comfortable and relaxing stay.

It’s advisable to plan accommodations in advance, especially during peak seasons, and consider the specific sections of the trail you’ll be hiking through.

Best Time To Visit And Do The Jordan Trail

The best time to hike the Jordan Trail is during the spring and fall seasons. The weather is generally mild and pleasant. The recommended months are from March to May in the spring and from September to November in the fall. During these periods, temperatures are moderate, ranging from around 15 to 25 degrees Celsius (59 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit). It will make it more enjoyable for long-distance trekking.

In contrast, the summer months (June to August) can be extremely hot, with temperatures often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). Winter (December to February) brings cooler temperatures, occasional rain, and the possibility of snow in higher elevations, making it less favorable for hiking.

Choosing the right season ensures a more enjoyable and comfortable experience while exploring the diverse landscapes of the Jordan Trail.

What to bring with you?

What to bring:

  • Trekking Poles
  • Warm sweater or jacket for evenings. I loved my Cotopaxi Fuego Downhooded Jacket
  • Lightweight, soft Loose-fitting long sleeves, quick dry, moisture-wicking fabrics and pants.
  • Wide-brimmed hat as the more of your body you can shield from the sun, the better will be for you
  • Water bottles or Camelbak , you will need to carry around 3 liters a day. You can also pack some electrolyte drink mixes or tabs along with your regular drinking water.
  • Breathable, high ankle non-leather hiking boots to avoid blisters and other trip-disrupting foot problems and that are suitable for Jordan’s rocky rough terrain. I love Oboz .
  • Sports socks. It is also recommended that you cut your toenails before the trip to prevent toenail damage.
  • Sunglasses. I used RAEN sunglasses.
  • Travel insurance I use Safetywing
  • Day-pack (Enough for your own personal items and water). Allpa 28 Liter Cotopaxi bag is what I used this trip.
  • Flip flops or sandals to wear after the hike

The 11 best National Parks for backpacking

Few if any of America’s National Parks offer as diverse a landscape as Washington's Olympic National Park, which protects a vast wilderness on the Olympic Peninsula and boasts three distinct ecosystems. Olympic National Park has four regions each with a distinct flavor. To the west are temperate old-growth rainforests, and to the drier eastern side are pine forests. The Pacific coastline region protects 70 miles of rocky shoreline and the alpine area has high snow-capped peaks offering views of the Olympic interior.

There are few roads in the park’s interior and the best way to discover it is on one of their heart-stopping wilderness trails. In the southwest portion of the park, the Hoh River trail is a 34-mile out-and-back canopied trail that winds along the river from the visitor center all the way to Glacier Meadows and you can experience abundant giant ferns and moss thanks to the 12 feet of rain this area receives on average each year.

For rugged beaches and rocky cliffs framed by coastal forest, head to the Olympic coast where you can hike for miles. It’s about 20 miles from Shi Shi Beach to Rialto Beach, one of the most iconic – and photographed – spots in the park, where you’ll find a rocky shoreline, glistening rock pools and rugged sea stacks. You’ll need to be prepared for beach camping and understand how to read a tide chart, but there are few experiences on the planet quite like hiking this trail.

Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park has a lot to boast about. Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, it is home to the tallest mountain in the contiguous United States, Mount Whitney, as well as the largest tree on earth. The vast majority of this park is wilderness and the only way to explore it is on foot. With over 800 miles of hiking trails, you won’t be disappointed whether you’re seeking high alpine wonders or lush treks through deep canyons.

The High Sierra Trail is a 72-mile trail covering the highest elevation in the park – and in fact, the Sierra Nevada – and takes you over the Great Western Divide to the Kern River drainage and to the summit of Mount Whitney.
Grand Canyon National Park is 277 miles long and up to 18 miles wide, making it one of the biggest canyons in the world. It is located in Arizona and is about a three-and-a-half hour drive from Phoenix, four-and-a-half from Las Vegas. This iconic spot is easily one of the most photographed places in the world, but there’s nothing quite like standing on the canyon rim and taking it all in with your own eyes. The canyon was carved by the Colorado River on its journey from the Rockies to the Gulf of California, though at over a mile deep you can rarely see it. You can, however, hike down to it, which is a serious – but unforgettable – endeavor.

The Bright Angel Trail begins just west of the Bright Angel Lodge and descends 4,380ft to the river over ten miles of desert hiking with an average grade of 10%, and when you get to the bottom, there isn’t an elevator ride back to the top. With a camping permit, you can turn this into an unforgettable overnight trip. Alternatively, the North Kaibab Trail is the only maintained trail into the canyon from the North Rim, beginning about two miles north of Grand Canyon Lodge with delightful views, waterfalls and plenty of physical challenge.

Just thirty miles south of Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park centers around the extraordinary 40-mile Teton mountain range which forms a distinctive jagged horizon that’s unlikely any other mountain range.
Forests can be surprisingly diverse, but of course, they are all distinguished by being populated with trees and undergrowth. A forest walk can look like a strenuous climb up the side of a pine tree-covered mountain in Colorado, a rainforest stroll through Redwood National Park or even hiking in the jungle in Central America. However, because all forests have trees, you can count on them experiencing some amount of regular rainfall, being below high altitude (where trees stop growing) and housing lots of wildlife. Forest hikes are great for bringing your best binoculars to enjoy a spot of bird watching, and you’ll get more protection from the elements than you will above treeline.

9. Redwood, California

Redwood National Park is located in northern California, close to the border with Oregon, and encompasses about 139,000 acres and protects almost half of all remaining old-growth coastal redwoods. Coastal redwoods are an evergreen tree that lives 1,200 to 2,200 years or longer and reach up to 379 ft in height and 29ft in diameter. These trees are also among the oldest living organisms on Earth. Discover rare solitude in almost any hike in Redwood National Park, which is far from any population center.

On the hiking trails here, you can wander among temperate rainforests, ancient fern-lined canyons, waterfalls and even along rugged coastline. A couple of trails such as the James Irvine Trail and Redwood Creek trail can be done in one long day, but they make for delightful overnights.
