How Kiss Revived Their Career on ‘Creatures of the Night’

Kiss finally broke out of a career-threatening creative tailspin in October 1982 with their 10th studio album, Creatures of the Night .

Barely five years before, the makeup-wearing group were on top of the world, selling out stadiums and releasing hit album after hit album.

However, internal tensions between the group's two camps (basically, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons vs. Peter Criss and Ace Frehley ) and a desire to reach an even larger, mainstream and family-friendly audience combined to almost completely torpedo the group.

Kiss' previous three albums – 1979's overly thin, disco and pop-influenced Dynasty , 1980's even more pop-heavy Unmasked  (which bombed, but holds up better than you'd think) and 1981's infamous medieval concept album Music From 'The Elder'  – failed to connect the band with that desired "next level" success, and in fact instead very quickly turned off the loyal fans they'd worked so hard to win over in the '70s.

By all accounts, Criss checked out during the making of Dynasty , although he remained on the credits and cover art of that and Unmasked . Similarly, Frehley was mostly M.I.A. from the Elder  project and completely absent for the recording of Creatures of the Night , but the group kept him on the cover so that replacement drummer Eric Carr was the only was the only new face fans saw.

When they entered the studio, Kiss were determined to make their new album what they had originally intended Music From 'The Elder'  to be – a loud, brash return to their hard-rock roots. This time out they not only stuck to that plan, they may have overshot it a bit, venturing deeper into heavy metal territory than they ever had before.

"I thought [ Creatures ] was great," Stanley says in Kiss: Behind the Mask . "It really was us reclaiming our purpose. We'd become complacent, wealthy and deluded ... that album had a purpose."

Listen to Kiss' 'Creatures of the Night'

Carr, undoubtedly confused about joining a straight-ahead rock band only to have his first project be the ornate Music From the Elder , was thrilled to show what he could do in a more traditional setting. As anyone who's heard the hard-hitting album can tell you, producer Michael James Jackson made sure the drums were the first thing anybody heard.

"Gene and I went on a search-and-destroy mission all over Los Angeles to find a great drum room," he recalled. "I used vintage microphones on the drums, and the room itself was also well covered with microphones. The end result was excellent, and further enhanced by the fine work Bob Clearmountain did in the mix at the Power Station."

With Ace gone, the lead guitar work was done by committee, with Robben Ford, Steve Farris (of Mr. Mister!), and Bob (not Bruce) Kulick all contributing solos. However the lion's share of the lead work, as well as some impressive songwriting, was turned in by the man who would ultimately -- if only temporarily -- replace Frehley, Vinnie Vincent.

Somehow in all this transition everything clicked into place, to the point where Simmons to this day seems to promise every upcoming new Kiss studio album is a blend of Creatures  and 1976's Destroyer . The album's big hit "I Love it Loud" is still played at nearly every Kiss concert to this day, and for much of the band's non-makeup years the title track and the bluesy Stanley showcase "I Still Love You" were staples of their live shows.

Other highlights include Stanley's wonderfully over-the-top "Keep Me Comin'," along with the riff-heavy "War Machine" and "Killer." But the album's true heart lies in a pair of Simmons-fronted tracks, which hint at the band's determination to overcome the often self-created chaos that had enveloped them in recent years.

First up is "Saint and Sinner," a lurching and surprisingly sophisticated rocker which finds the Demon kissing off his former bandmate Frehley in barely-masked terms – "Without you it's aces high."  "Rock and Roll Hell" treads in similar territory as Simmons ponders losing his place in the rock world ( "This time the pressure's really on" ) with songwriting help from Bryan Adams. Both of these songs are packed with dramatic moments and depth without ever seeming gimmicky; it makes you wonder if this was the sonic and lyrical territory Kiss were aiming for with The Elder .

Even though Creatures of the Night  marked a strong return to form and new levels of songwriting, arrangement and performance skill, the record failed to reconnect the band with their understandably distrusting audience. In later years Creatures  would get the recognition it deserved, but in order to get themselves back in the national spotlight Kiss would have to make a drastic and previously unthinkable change.

Kiss – ‘Creatures of the Night’ (40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition) – Album Review (The Kiss Review Series)

1982 was a pivotal year for Kiss. After the disaster of their last album, ‘Music from the Elder’, Kiss were in a do or die situation. They needed to get back to their hard rock roots and show the world that Kiss was still Kiss. Producer Michael James Jackson was brought in to produce the album and Kiss new they needed to rock. Heck, Eric Carr was telling them that all the time…and he was right. To celebrate this pivotal album, Kiss delivered the 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set and it is jammed pack with goodness. Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley have been paying attention to other band’s box sets and now they know how to put one of these together. If you thought the Destroyer 45th Anniversary Box Set was stellar, then this one will make you even happier.

kiss creatures of the night tour

It is jammed pack with 5 discs of music. A remastered edition of the main album; 2 CDs of demos, rarities, outtakes and remixes as well as 2 Live CDs chock full of goodness from various shows in 1982. And you also get a Blu-Ray Audio of the main album and I can’t wait to turn this baby on in surround sound and hear those drums surround the room. But that is not all, not by a long shot. The box set is packed with an 80-page book, posters, stickers, patches, photo cards, buttons, picks and all sorts of information about the band…don’t believe, look at the sticker from the front of the box set…

kiss creatures of the night tour

So sit back and let’s go through the box set in detail with a lot of pictures to show you the beauty of this set.

DISC ONE: ORIGINAL ALBUM REMASTERED:

kiss creatures of the night tour

First up is the remastered original album. And let me tell you it sounds fantastic. The drums are just as powerful as before and cranked it rocks out like never before. I will not go in to detail with this album as I have reviewed it before as you can click on the links below to see the full Kiss Review Series below. This is one of my favorite albums and favorite Kiss albums and I will say after listening to this remastering, it still is one of my favorite albums of all time!! I do love it loud too!!

DISC TWO & THREE: DEMOS, RARITIES AND OUTTAKES:

kiss creatures of the night tour

This is where the sweetest stuff lies in this box set. The unreleased material. Disc Two kicks off with the four songs that were recorded more as a test run for Michael James Jackson and they showed up on The Killers release and are all stellar songs. We get a bunch of demos that were recorded at Penny Lane Studios. One was later finished and released on Asylum as “Love’s A Deadly Weapon” and one called “Feel Like Heaven” was released on a Peter Criss Solo album. The other ended up on Killers as “Nowhere to Run”. We get a couple instrumental, backing track pieces and two I hadn’t heard with “Tell It To a Fool” and “Chrome Goes Into Motion”. The last two tracks are Gene Simmons demos and they were actually released on The Vault which if you are a Vault owner, that pisses you off a bit as we were under the impression those songs wouldn’t be released anywhere else.

Disc Three has a couple more songs from The Vault with “Legends Never Die” that Wendy O. Williams covered and the classic Kiss demo of “It’s My Life” which Wendy also covered. But the biggest and best song on here is the demo for the song “Not for the Innocent”. That song wound up on the album ‘Lick it Up’ in a final form, but this version is something Kiss should’ve been doing more of. It was a duet version with both Gene and Paul and it is simply Fucking Awesome!! This alone was worth the price of admission for me. A huge missed opportunity for the band!! Another cool outtake is for the song “Betrayed” which is another famous unreleased track from the band. The rest of the disc has various outtakes of songs from the album and they are a lot of fun to explore. The last song is the only song on the album from the 1985 Remix of Creatures and honestly, they should’ve included the whole album as another disc in my opinion. That would’ve been cool.

DISC FOUR & FIVE: CREATURES TOUR LIVE ’82/’83

kiss creatures of the night tour

Disc four and five are also fantastic. It is a collection of live songs from the Creatures Tour in 1982-1983 fro shows in Rockford, Illinois; Sioux City, Iowa; and Houston, Texas. It would’ve been even cooler if they include the full versions of all three shows, but we will take what we can get. There are 7 live songs on here that are tracks from the album and it is too bad we couldn’t get the two missing track in a live version. They did piece the songs together to make it feel like a full live show and the sound is actually amazing. Way better than the live show on the Destroyer box set. My favorite part might be Paul’s banter between songs. He seemed to be angry at times and his language was pretty crude and NC-17 at times which he did get tamer as the years went on. I found it hilarious and cool at times listening back to how he played with the crowd. He is a master at it.

After “Rock And Roll All Nite”, we got some more bonus live songs, a couple repeats of songs but from a different city of course. I think the coolest thing on there might be the fact they added the backing tracks from all the sound effects used on tour that year. You get the Tank, the Turbine, the Firehouse siren, the drums and ending tank sounds, the bass solo wind and gargoyle sounds as well as bells and flame sounds. It was a pretty unique idea and I like it. All-in-all, a great set of live songs that I’ll listen to over and over!!

BLU-RAY AUDIO:

kiss creatures of the night tour

The Blu-Ray Audio disc is the album remastered in surround sound as well as Dolby Atmos. I did get Surround Sound for Christmas and so I put this in and I will be honest, I wasn’t impressed with the surround sound effect of the album. Don’t get me wrong, it sounded great, the drums were huge, but it didn’t feel as immersive as other 5.1 mixes that I have. I was a little disappointed. I thought the Destroyer album’s 5.1 was so much better.

kiss creatures of the night tour

Now it is time to go through the rest of the collection and will start with the book…

80-PAGE HARD COVER BOOK:

kiss creatures of the night tour

First we will talk about the 80-page hard cover book. And let me tell you it is incredible. The pictures are beautiful and a lot I’ve never seen before. One of my favorite parts of the book are all the pictures of the different variants and releases related to this album where it be picture discs or singles. It is a history lesson for you on all that gets released. Speaking of history lesson, that is really what this book is. A collection of stories and interviews about every aspect of the making of this album as well as the related tour.

kiss creatures of the night tour

You get interviews from Gene & Paul as well as old conversations with Michael James Jackson, Vinnie Vincent, Eric Carr and from all the people involved. They talk about the disaster that was The Elder and the freaking out the band did as a result. They talked about Ace leaving and then all the people that auditioned to take his place, including Richie Sambora. They talked about Vinnie and even Eric and that massive drum sound that totally made the album the great album it is. You get stories on the tour and the tank, the media and promotion of the album and all the design concepts the band had. They even talked about removing the make-up. Folks, this is a history book of a critical point in time for the band.

1982 PRESS KIT:

kiss creatures of the night tour

One of the cool pieces included in the set was a replica of the 1982 Press Kit that was sent out for the album. It included the Band Bio, 3 Posters, 2 Stage Design Drawings, Promo Photos, A Creatures T-Shirt Iron On Transfer, a Bumper Sticker, a Replica Ticket, a backstage pass and 4 trading cards….they looked like all of this…

kiss creatures of the night tour

1983 REPLICA TOUR BOOK:

They also included a replica tour book which is great because this is one of the tour books I am missing from my collection as it is quite pricey. I am not going to show every picture as we have enough so far…what is cool about the book is of course the tank, but it is the fact this was the band’s 10th Anniversary Tour. After all that had gone on with the band, it is hard to believe at this point it was only 10 years.

kiss creatures of the night tour

There was another envelope that contained a couple more things. But first, the picture shows a mistake on the cover of the envelope. Either it was printed backwards or it was upside down…look at the logo…I think you can see it…

kiss creatures of the night tour

That envelope included another set of four illustrated art cards of each member, but the prize is the 2nd Volume of the Gotham City News (the first was in the Destroyer Box Set). It contains song-by-song account of the album and most of the bonus tracks. You get discussions from Gene and Paul as well as some of the song writers (Jim Vallance and Bryan Adams) and some of the players on the albums or people working the boards. Really cool reading.

kiss creatures of the night tour

And that still isn’t everything. There were also 5 glow in the dark guitar picks and 4 buttons…

kiss creatures of the night tour

And lastly, an iron-on patch of the album cover…

kiss creatures of the night tour

And I think that is it! Whew…that is a lot of stuff.

If you are a Kiss fan and a fan of this album, you can’t go wrong getting this box set. My Overall Score is a 5.0 out of 5.0 Stars as they check off everything. A remastered album, check…a ton of unreleased demos, rarities, outtakes, check….a live show that was unreleased (sort of), check…and a bunch of other goodies, check!!! What more could you want. Thanks for hanging out so long with me.

Now, if you want to check out my discussion on the album and boxset with Superdekes on his show Scotch on the Rocks, click the link below. Have a great day!!

In second hand markets it’s more common to run into boxes that are missings parts..

Yep I worked that life. Not my box sets!

Yep, that is why I’m usually very particular about purchasing from 2nd hand market on box sets.

Oh, they stay in the box. I will read the books and anything like that, but patches, stickers, buttons, posters all stay with the set.

Wonderful super deluxe edition !

I think it is pretty awesome.

Great set. One of my favourite purchases of last year. For that price it should be though! Can’t wait for the next one…

Probably my favorite purchases last year as well. that and the sodas!! What do you think the next set will be?

Dunno. Assuming it’s an anniversary then Lick It Up? But could also be a 1973 early days kinda thing maybe if they keep things to the make up. If they go the 45th Anniversary route what would that be… solo albums? Or 35th… Crazy Nights?! Ooh… I’d buy em all quite happily but I’d shit my pants with glee if it’s Crazy Nights!

I would love to see the debut get a treatment and include an official Wicked Lester album. Crazy Nights or Revenge would be good too. And like you, I’d buy them all.

They did remaster Wicked Lester for the KISS box set but then decided to leave it off so they do have it available to use. I’d love that too.

I have two separate Wicked Boots but would like an official release as well.

Yeah I’ve got a boot of the remaster but always prefer an official release

What???? Hope it has a totally different style if it’s Crazy Nighs..not into Crazy Nights or Hot in the Shade at all.

Could u specify why u like Crazy Nights, good points, favorite tracks etc.

I thought it would be Asylum with 10 different remixes/demos of Uh All Night that would want to hear Scott? lol

That’s my No. 1 choice (and yours) but didn’t work out as an anniversary in 2023. Expect that in 2025 with a nurse costume as a bonus

BAHAHAHAHA…..

Agreed. This was my favourite purchase of the year. Packaging is stellar….

Five out of five indeed! Probably the box set I have been happiest with in a couple years. And they didn’t even get to do everything they wanted to do with this set! Lots of stuff on the cutting room floor that I hope we’ll see one day.

For those who would like to see a deep dive with a couple Contrarians:

Oooh! What was left on the cutting room floor???

Unfortunately the conversation was off the record.

Then IM me!!! LOL!!!

Great review as always John. This must have taken you some time to piece this together. 5/5 is right on the money Sir. Thanks for adding our chat. That was a well spent Friday evening.

It was the only post I did that day!! I’m finally doing Destroyer this weekend.

Look forward to it.

Great detail in the review. I’ve been thinking about partying with my dollars on this as I’ve been cranking it on Spotify.

I like what I’ve seen so off to the online sites to purchase.

Thanks. This set is fantastic and I love the demos . Live stuff way better than Destroyer’s box set. Worth it for me.

This album is so much better than the second and third Audioslave releases!

The drums on this album sounded so loud and full. Whoever the engineer was earned their money.

That they did.

KISS – Creatures Of The Night (Album Review)

KISS – Creatures Of The Night (Album Review)

November 22, 2023 by Mark Greentree

Released in 1982, Creatures Of The Night marked a pivotal moment in the storied career of KISS. The band, facing challenges and lineup changes, unleashed an album that not only revitalised their sound but also solidified their status as rock and roll legends. With their last truly epic album being the 1979 release, Dynasty , KISS returned to their hard rock foundations with Creatures Of The Night ; a sound that was refreshing at the time and is ultimately timeless even when appreciating the album some four decades after its initial release.

Part of the appeal is due to the production of the album as Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, along with co-producer, Michael James Jackson, were able to successfully capture the raw energy of KISS' live performances while maintaining studio precision. The result is a highly polished, yet edgy, production that allows each musical element to shine.

While there is never any guarantee as to the sonic prowess and stature of remastered releases, the 2022 remaster of Creatures Of The Night is superb. Sure, some will complain that it isn’t as dynamic as the original analogue releases of the album, but in all honesty, it rocks! As such, it’s a fun, lively listen, that I could listen to on repeat for hours on end.

While the lossless stereo mix is my preferred edition of the album, the Dolby Atmos mix, via Apple Music, is a little muddy in the low end and lacks instrument separation as a result. That said, on some tracks the surround mix does enhance the music, but the question that has to be asked is if it makes the album more compelling. The short answer is: No. The Atmos mix is fuller, less treble-focused, and as such reminds me fondly of the sound that I’d get from high-quality compact cassettes. That, of course, doesn’t mean that I dislike the surround option; anything but, I just find myself gravitating to the stereo mix more often as it simply sounds right.

Creatures Of The Night serves as a powerful opener, setting the tone with its thunderous drums, blistering guitar riffs, and anthemic vocal delivery by Stanley.

Saint And Sinner has a swagger about it that becomes infectious. While it’s a run-of-the-mill rock tune, the groove is catchy enough that you’ll find Saint And Sinner quickly becomes an earworm; an unlikely one, but one nonetheless. The guitar work, including Simmon’s bass, is some of the greatest on any KISS recording as it becomes the driving force behind the song.

Keep Me Comin’ is a killer tune that’s KISS 101. With soaring instrumentals throughout, compelling vocals, and an addictive harmonious chorus; what’s not to like? Yes, those who don’t like glam metal may find it to not be to their tastes, but rather than focus on influences and subgenres, I much prefer to rock out to this dose of raw, unbridled rock.

Rock And Roll Hell is magical! That bass guitar entry is what bass guitar dreams are made of and I’m so glad that Simmons was the lead singer on this tune for it suits his style perfectly and simply wouldn’t have worked if Stanley had been the vocalist. Most interesting, however, is that Bryan Adams co-wrote the song with Simmons and Jim Vallance. While Adams is an accomplished rock star in his own right, he was still in his infancy when this song was written and it’s a masterpiece if there ever was one.

Danger is fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled, and is one of KISS’ most relentless tracks as it relates to raw intensity. It’s a killer tune that continues to grow on you the more you listen to the album.

I Love It Loud has an interesting fade-out, similarly styled to The Beatles’ Helter Skelter . While it’s a recognised recording technique, and it works exceptionally well, I’m not entirely sure that it was necessary as it doesn’t add anything to the song. Subsequently, I feel it would have been better had this element been omitted, but that doesn’t change the fact that I Love It Loud is a quintessential KISS anthem, with a chanting chorus and thunderous rhythm, that makes it an instant classic.

I Still Love You slows the tempo as it’s the only power ballad to be included on Creatures Of The Night . While many fans prefer KISS for their pure rock numbers, I must admit that I love a good power ballad and this is no exception for it not only works well within the album’s structure, but it’s perfectly suited to Stanley’s incredible vocal range.

Killer returns the album to its high-energy, riff-driven, sound that defines the album and is a quintessential B-side.

War Machine closes the album with a bang and is so addictive that you’ll find yourself quickly playing the album again. The militaristic drumming and aggressive guitar riffs reinforce the overall theme and leave a lasting impression. While numerous songs could be declared as the best song in KISS’ extensive catalogue, War Machine is right at the top of any list for it doesn’t matter if you experience it via Creatures Of The Night , or in concert, you’re going to be blown away with the attitude of this incredible song.

Creatures Of The Night was a much-needed return to form for KISS following the lacklustre Unmasked and the downright atrocious Music From “The Elder” . The impact from Creatures Of The Night reverberated through the 80s, influencing the glam and hair metal bands that followed but ultimately showcased that KISS still had it, along with the ability to evolve while staying true to their rock roots. Creatures Of The Night is, subsequently, a must-listen for both die-hard fans and those looking to explore the diverse landscape of 80s rock music.

Review: KISS Creatures of the Night 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition

kiss creatures of the night tour

Celebrating its 40th anniversary, Creatures Of The Night from 1982 is a seminal album in the KISS catalog. It crushed fans’ expectations with a huge, back-to-rock sound and has become a fan favorite and cult classic. On November 18, 2022, UMe will release Creatures Of The Night 40 as a 5-CD + Blu-ray Audio Super Deluxe Edition, 3-LP Deluxe, 2-CD Deluxe, 1-LP Half-Speed Master 180gm, 1-CD Remaster, as well as a 5-CD Super Deluxe Edition Digital Download + Streaming and 2-CD Digital Download-only version plus a color Vinyl exclusive. Read on for my review of KISS Creatures of the Night 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition , now available to buy on Amazon .

Having rechanneled their efforts into consciously making a return to the hard rock that they were known for, KISS – Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, and Eric Carr – unleashed Creatures Of The Night in October of 1982. In addition to a harder sound, the album is also noted for its heavier, darker mood. The single “I Love It Loud” has been performed on nearly every subsequent KISS tour, while “War Machine,” the ballad “I Still Love You,” and the title song also featured heavily in their live sets for a number of years. Also of note is “Killer,” which featured the group’s first songwriting collaboration with their soon-to-be-guitarist Vinnie Vincent. Creatures Of The Night received accolades in magazines such as Kerrang! and Guitar Player – which both placed the album in their top five end of year chart for 1982 – and has attained Gold Album status (sales of 500,000+).

The ‘Creatures Of The Night 40’ Super Deluxe boasts 103 total tracks with 75 tracks being unreleased. Newly remastered on CD 1, the original album has never sounded better. CDs 2 & 3 feature 34 demos, rarities & outtakes including unreleased gems such as “Deadly Weapon (Penny Lane Demo),” “Not For The Innocent (Demo)” and “Betrayed (Outtake).” CDs 4 & 5 highlight 26 incredible, soundboard live recordings from the Creatures ‘82/’83 Tour and seven super rare tour sound effects, all recorded and archived by the Creatures Tour sound engineer Harry Witz. The Blu-ray Audio disc showcases a first-ever Atmos and 5.1 surround mix from the original album multi-tracks plus the high-resolution newly remastered 1982 stereo mix of the original album.

Additionally, the Super Deluxe box features an extensive array of bonus kollectible KISS memorabilia and ephemera, including:

DISC ONE: CREATURES OF THE NIGHT

Original Album Remastered

1. Creatures Of The Night 2. Saint And Sinner 3. Keep Me Comin’ 4. Rock And Roll Hell 5. Danger 6. I Love It Loud 7. I Still Love You 8. Killer 9. War Machine

Creatures of the Night has always sounded great. This remastered version sounds just as good to me as any other version I’ve previously heard. It’s crisp, powerful, and full of songs KISS fans know and love. I have no complaints when it comes to the first disc. However, nothing remarkable or unexpected stands out to me either.

DISC TWO: DEMOS, RARITIES & OUTTAKES

1. I’m A Legend Tonight 2. Down On Your Knees 3. Nowhere To Run 4. Partners In Crime 5. Deadly Weapon (Penny Lane Demo)* 6. Feel Like Heaven (Penny Lane Demo)* 7. Nowhere To Run (Penny Lane Demo)* 8. Deadly Weapon (Original Demo)* 9. Feel Like Heaven (Original Demo)* 10. Nowhere To Run (Take 11 –Instrumental)* 11. Tell It To A Fool (Take 4 –Drums & Bass Instrumental)* 12. Chrome Goes Into Motion (Take 2 –Drums & Bass Instrumental)* 13. I’m A Legend Tonight (Mix 4 –Instrumental & Background Vocals)* 14. Don’t Leave Me Lonely (Take 8 –Drums & Guitar Instrumental)* 15. Something Seems To Happen At Night (Gene Simmons Demo) 16. It’s Gonna Be Alright (Gene Simmons Demo)

This is where things start to get good. I have always loved the Killers tracks, so it is nice to see them included here. And the demos are wonderful. My favorite is “Deadly Weapon” with an epic Paul Stanley vocal and classic KISS arrangement. This is the version of the song that should have been ultimately released, not the horrendous sped-up version Gene sang on Asylum. Thankfully, this box set gives us the opportunity to listen to it here. The other demos are wonderful to listen to as well. They make you feel like a fly on the wall in the recording studio. I love instrumental tracks, so those are also enjoyable to hear. The sound quality of the demos is excellent. There is a lot to love on this disc.

DISC THREE: DEMOS, RARITIES & OUTTAKES

1. Legends Never Die (Gene Simmons Demo) 2. It’s My Life (Gene Simmons Demo) 3. Not For The Innocent (Demo)* 4. I Still Love You (Take 1)* 5. I Still Love You (Take 2)* 6. Saint And Sinner (Take 1)* 7. Saint And Sinner (Take 2 –False Start)* 8. Saint And Sinner (Take 3)* 9. Betrayed (Outtake)* 10. Creatures Of The Night (Alternate Mix 19)* 11. Partners In Crime (Alternate Mix 16B)* 12. I Love It Loud (Alternate Mix 21)* 13. War Machine (Full-Length Version –Mix 11)* 14. Rock And Roll Hell (Take 2–9/10/1982)* 15. Rock And Roll Hell (Take 1 –Incomplete–9/15/1982)* 16. Rock And Roll Hell (Take 2–9/15/1982)* 17. I Love It Loud (Single Edit) 18. Creatures Of The Night (1985 Remix)

The fun times continue on disc three with nearly 20 demos, rarities, and outtakes. It’s interesting seeing demos from the Gene Simmons Vault included on this set. So much for those songs not being available anywhere else. Unlike that box set, the audio quality here is exceptional. The different mixes and takes are interesting to listen to, but they are not nearly as compelling as the demos. So, I don’t expect to listen to them over and over again.

DISC FOUR: CREATURES TOUR LIVE ‘82/’83 –PART ONE

1. Creatures Of The Night (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 2. Strutter (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 3. Calling Dr. Love (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 4. Firehouse (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 5. I Love It Loud (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 6. Cold Gin (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 7. Keep Me Comin’ (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 8. War Machine (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 9. I Want You (Houston, Texas –3/10/1983)* 10. Rock And Roll Hell (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 11. I Still Love You (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 12. Shout It Out Loud (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 13. Gene’s Bass Solo (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 14. God Of Thunder / Eric’s Drum Solo / God Of Thunder (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)*

The live tracks on this box set are a blast. The audio quality is superb, and the energy of the band from this era is infectious. Paul’s raps in between songs, including a litany of curse words, are delightful to hear, as is the band’s top-notch musicianship. There is a great selection of songs, not just the same old, same old that us KISS fans are used to hearing. This is easily one of my favorite discs in the entire set.

DISC FIVE: CREATURES TOUR LIVE ‘82/’83 –PART TWO

1. Paul’s Love Gun Rap (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 2. Love Gun (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 3. Paul’s Guitar Solo (Rockford, Illinois–12/31/1982)* 4. Black Diamond (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)* 5. Detroit Rock City (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)* 6. Rock And Roll All Nite (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)*

BONUS LIVE PERFORMANCES

7. Rock And Roll Hell (Sioux City, Iowa–12/30/1982)* 8. I Want You (Rockford, Illinois –12/31/1982)* 9. King Of The Night Time World (Pine Bluff, Arkansas–2/11/1983)* 10. Cold Gin (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)* 11. I Still Love You (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)* 12. Strutter (Houston, Texas–3/10/1983)*

BONUS CREATURES TOUR SOUND EFFECTS

13. Tank Start Of Show* 14. Turbine* 15. Firehouse Siren* 16. Drum and Ending Tank* 17. Bass Solo Wind and Gargoyles* 18. Bells* 19. Flames*

The additional live material on disc five is just as great as what preceded it, especially the Creatures material, which is masterfully performed. Makes me wish I was young enough to attend KISS concerts in 1982 and 1983. The tour sound effects are not what I expected. Rather than short audio clips, they are about one minute or more each. We’re talking incredibly detailed, high-quality sound effects. It’s something I didn’t know I wanted, but I’m sure glad to have them.

Final Verdict

KISS Creatures of the Night 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition is a must-own release from the “Hottest Band in the World.” The 80-page book included with this box set is just as beautiful as the one that accompanied the Destroyer Super Deluxe Edition, and it is brimming with photos, notes, and insights from those who helped create Creatures, including Gene, Paul, and Michael James Jackson, among others. The five discs that comprise this set contain exceptional material. From the remastered iconic album, to the bevy of demos, outtakes, and rarities, there is much to love here. I can’t wait to receive my physical copy on November 18, so I can experience all the goodies this special release has to offer, including the Blu-ray audio version of the studio album. If you are a KISS fan, this is one release you cannot miss out on. It is exceptionally well done, and it has me even more excited for the next KISS album that receives this royal treatment.

Kiss celebrate Creatures Of The Night's 40th birthday with kountless kollektibles

The 40th anniversary super deluxe edition of kiss's creatures of the night boasts 103 total tracks and your choice of new doorbell ring.

Kiss: Creatures Of The Night (40th Anniversary Super Deluxe) cover art

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

Kiss purists beware: the band’s 1982 album Creatures Of The Night does not include the classic Simmons-Stanley-Frehley-Criss quartet, the Cat (Peter Criss) having been replaced the preceding year by the Fox (drummer Eric Carr). Also note that despite being included in the artwork, the Spaceman (Ace Frehley) did not play on Creatures , the bulk of the ‘ghost guitaring’ being by Vinnie Vincent, soon to join full-time in the guise of the Ankh Warrior. [Enough Kiss characters – Ed.]

Kiss’s career was in the doldrums in ’82, the band licking their wounds after the release of concept-album cock-up Music From ‘The Elder’ . A return to basics was required, and Creatures delivered. Highlights include the triumphant I Love It Loud , the rapacious War Machine and the tremblesome ballad I Still Love You , with Paul Stanley emoting like a motherfucker. (It wouldn’t surprise us to learn that he recorded his vocals while cradling an ailing puppy in his arms.) But averageness also prevails, especially on the Gene Simmons -led Killer , a leery debacle that has dated badly.

This super-deluxe edition – costing, wait for it… anywhere between £200 and £300 – offers more bonus tracks than a Black Friday sale at the Hornby warehouse; there are also kountless kollektibles.

The best bits are the super-rare stage sound effects, recorded and archived by Creatures tour sound engineer Harry Witz. We have adopted Bass Solo Wind And Gargoyles as our Ring doorbell tune and haven’t had an Amazon delivery in weeks.
