If you listen to one new band this week, make it Rat Boy School Excursion
All too often we’re the last horse to cross the line when it comes to discovering the one new band worth listening to in any given week, but this time it’s different. we were fortunate enough to stumble across/have the wind knocked out of us by eora/sydney upstarts rat boy school excursion and their new track ‘teeth’ off the rip, so what we bring you today is fresh ..
While ‘Teeth’ may be their debut release, scattered throughout its 4 minute run time are ample reasons why Rat Boy School Excursion are destined to usurp your current favourite band. Unfortunately, many of these reasons are tough to fit into words, but condensed into a slick sentence, ‘Teeth’ is sharpened to break the skin of modern day audiences, and leave a permanent scar.
Before we get too carried away with the why of ‘Teeth’, let’s ground ourselves in the what .
Based in Eora/Sydney, Rat Boy School Excursion are a five-piece who toil within the fertile fields of Gothic Folk, but as we see with ‘Teeth’, are clearly comfortable and capable with frolicking further with the song morphing into a vicious, distorted onslaught before regaining composure in its final moments.
Finding a rare vocal commodity in lead singer and writer, Olive Lorikeet, as well as Gus Hunt, a guitarist who knows how to keep a loop engaging and a drummer who studies in vibe alchemy, RBSE have entered the picture with a unique sound, adding further razzle dazzle with Kierah McCue, tasked with xylophone, wine glasses, harmonica, whatever else is laying about, backing vocalist/guitarist powerhouse Miranda Lorikeet and bassist James Harvie, who, for those playing at home, also features in L.A.R.M.
Now, let’s get carried away with the why .
All too often, songs inspired by heartbreak focus on the big things, but with ‘Teeth’, RBSE give voice to the small; the things that go on in between the ebb and flow of the big. There aren’t too many huge choruses out there about it how feels like pulling teeth trying to stay with the person you want, and that’s the on-ramp for ‘Teeth’, quite literally a groove we can all get down with, but speaking with BLUNT, vocalist Olive explains, “Itâs more than that…”
“This song is a representation of the anger, resentment and sorrow of a long and painful breakup. The songâs buildup of chaos is how that felt for me. This song is cathartic and feels like a release of that pain, I really feel it towards the end with the vocals screaming: ‘Was I not sweet enough for you?’ out of absolute desperation.”
Even fewer and further in between are songs which give listeners a way out of the heartbreak. ‘Teeth’ doesn’t leave things in despair and loads the closing moments of the song, some of its calmest, with intent. “As the song returns to just Kierah and Gusâ guitar towards the outro, it feels as if the cloud has lifted and the pain has gone,” Olive adds.
“I hope listeners who have felt such pain also find a release in hearing this song. I hope you feel all the anger and resentment with me, and then youâre able to let it all go…No matter how painful a breakup is, things will get back to normal one day. Hopefully you get to keep all your teeth too.”
Consider yourselves warned. No doubt as this is typed, RBSE are prepping their next move, and you’re gonna wanna be there when it happens.

How Does This Work?
This guide is as simple as we can practically get away with. Weâll include some occasional commentary (feel free to submit your own!) to help give you context on what can be a dizzyingly complex network of musicians, collectives, communities, and spaces, or just make sure you donât miss out on catching your next favourite act.
Got a gig you think should be listed here? » Drop us an email to submit a show .
Want to read up on how this works? » Head over to our About / FAQs page .
Artists, managers, promoters, and venues: Self-promo is fine â we love it when you let us know what youâve got going on! But we wonât publish your marketing/social copy verbatim or give you special consideration in the guide. We generally donât list cover/tribute bands or background-music sets at hospitality venues. All listings are at our own discretion. We will also graciously refuse any offer of door spots for shows where we can buy tickets.

W/ The Devoted Few
The last time you saw something like this, it was in the pages of the Drum Media you picked up from Waterfront whilst the bands were rehearsing at Troy Horse for a big night at The Annandale. 78 Saab, darlings of Ivy League Records and the greater Sydney indie scene, had shimmery summery tunes all over national airwaves for a time back then and deservedly so. They are celebrating those sunny days on the road and the anniversary of their best record, 2004's âCrossed Linesâ, produced by the genius ear of the era, Tim Whitten (Gersey, Powderfinger, Art of Fighting, Gaslight Radio). Their dear mates The Devoted Few must have broken out of the boarded up Hopetoun hotel recently - their ghosts will never leave - because they are fittingly along for the ride.

Melbourne private school Kilvington grammar charged over death of student after Vietnam excursion
Worksafe also charged World Travel Expeditions after Lachlan Cook, 16, died in hospital following health complications

A travel company and a Melbourne private school have been charged over the death of a student who became unwell on a school trip.
The Kilvington grammar school student, Lachlan Cook, 16, suffered diabetes complications during a trip to Vietnam in September 2019 and later died in hospital in Melbourne.
His death was found to have been preventable by a coroner in 2023.
A court previously heard the boy had been self-managing his type 1 diabetes when he fell ill and was taken to hospital 24 hours after first showing symptoms. He suffered a heart attack and was flown back to the Royal Childrenâs hospital in Melbourne, with his life support switched off in October 2019.

On Wednesday, WorkSafe said it has charged the school and the travel company, World Challenge Expeditions Pty Ltd.
World Travel Expeditions has been charged with three counts of failing to ensure that persons other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
The regulator alleges the company failed, so far as was reasonably practicable, to reduce the risk of illness or death to participating students, including those with diabetes.
The school is also facing one charge of failing to ensure that persons other than employees were not exposed to health and safety risks, WorkSafe said.

The case is due to be heard in the Melbourne magistrates court on 30 April.

Year 12 excursion to Art Express and Tacita Dean exhibition
09 Apr 2024
On Friday March 1st, Year 12 Visual Arts students travelled to Sydney to view two exhibitions: Artexpress and Tacita Dean. Students were guided through Tacita Deanâs contemporary art practice which focuses on anachronism â things that were once futuristic but are now out of date, exhibited at the MCA. Works included film, drawing, painting and lithographs. Students moved from room to room and were engaged in various sensory experiences. This exhibition forms the basis for case study three, the third of their five compulsory case studies.
Sid Foggs bus company transported us in fine style and we were lucky to have Rockâin Ronnie as our bus driver â he was awesome.
We stopped at Macquarieâs Chair for a quick group photo and had lunch in the park before viewing Artexpress at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. Thanks to Mr Burton and Mrs Pfister for accompanying these students.
