My cold brew journey began during the pandemic, when every morning felt like a Saturday morning thanks to the luxury of time and many, many homemade batches. I love the full coffee experience: freshly roasted espresso, chilled overnight, iced – add a splash of creamy oat milk, 5 pumps of sweetener, and shake it right up. 

However, I regularly spend $12+ on my coffee shop order and delivery now that my life has returned to its normal routine. I was looking for a way to cut down on this outrageous cost when my friend Kristen posted an Instagram story of the cold brew coffee she keeps on tap in her fridge. Battle of the Brew

Wandering Bear is an organic strong and smooth cold brew coffee on tap. Think boxed wine, but cold brew coffee. Like most great startups, Wandering Bear was born on a college campus. Co-founder Matthew Bachmann doesn’t describe himself as a morning person. That’s why a homemade caffeinated cold brew was the fuel for his existence. He walked into his Columbia grad school class to find fellow classmate Ben Gordon (his co-founder) with a homemade cold brew, too. It was love at first sip. Their relationship quickly turned into a battle of the best brew – who could make the strongest and smoothest batch.

What’s This Cold Brew Craze About? ‍

As the first coffee on tap, Wandering Bear checks the box but for convenience – but how strong is it? Very. The coffee is made with 100% organic arabica coffee grown in Peru, Colombia, Mexico, and Nicaragua. An Honest Review ‍

I got the Straight Black and Vanilla cold brew coffee boxes. The Straight Black is hands down my favorite. While I typically drink my coffee milky and sweet, this classic black goes down smooth. It starts off strong and finishes with a chocolatey undertone (and no bitter acidic aftertaste).

Vanilla is typically my least favorite flavor because most vanilla cold brews overpower the coffee with artificial sweetness. I was pleasantly surprised at how light this vanilla flavor is. Just enough to get a whiff of the smell plus a mild and natural vanilla sweetness. 

Taste: 9/10

The caffeine hit me almost instantly. But not the kind that makes you run to the bathroom (IYKYK). You feel it in your heart and mind. It’s strong, yet smooth. The box reads that each 6 oz cup serves up 2 espresso shots. I’d say you maybe feel 1-1.5 shots if you’re a 2 cups a day caffeine-aholic like me. It’s a great sip on it all day, steady-state energy flow, kind of cold brew. I’m also amazed at how long it stays fresh. I went on vacation for a week and came back to coffee just as strong as Day 1.

Caffeine: 8.99/10 The best part of Wandering Bear is its convenience: I roll out of bed and go straight to the fridge for a quick morning pour. This cold brew delivers that coffee shop quality with the push of a button. I love how sleek the box fits into my fridge, too.

Wandering Bear Coffee sources its coffee from select farms and co-operatives in Colombia, Mexico, Nicaragua, and Peru. They say that the secret to their strong, smooth organic cold brew coffee is that “there is more coffee in our coffee”.

If you are new to cold brew, the first thing you will notice when you try Wandering Bear is the amazing flavor (more on that below!).  Cold brew tends to be less bitter, less acidic, with more of a sweet almost fruity, nutty, chocolatey flavor.  There are a number of factors that go into this flavor, but the most notable is the quality of the beans and the roasting process.

When your cold brew from Wandering Bear Coffee arrives, you can store it at room temperature until you open it thanks to the flash pasteurization that allows for safe storage without affecting its taste.

I must say that having cold brew on tap is very convenient.  Even before this review, I drank a cup of cold brew coffee every day after lunch.  I started my cold brew journey by making iced coffee (which I later realized is not the same as cold brew) and then tried several cold brew brands at my local grocery store.

I eventually purchased a cold brew maker as many of the cold brew coffee I tried from the grocery store didn’t seem very strong and tasted watered down.  I love cold brew and was super excited to try Wandering Bear Coffee.  Shop Now >>

Wandering Bear Straight Black Cold Brew

We received a 96oz box of Straight Black Cold Brew from Wandering Bear Coffee.   This box contains 16 6oz servings.  Wandering Bear says that each 6oz glass is equal to 2 espresso shots with 150 mg caffeine.  All Wandering Bear Coffee is made with simple, 100% organic ingredients and contains no sugar or dairy.  In addition, the cold brew boxes are recyclable, just separate the bag from the box.

Compared to your normal cup of Jo brewed at home with between 100-120mg of caffeine, Wandering Bear Coffee cold brew will give you an extra kick. If you are looking for a bigger kick of caffeine Wandering Bear 32oz cartons have 180mg of caffeine per glass and their single-serve cartons have 300 mg per 11 oz carton.

The taste of the Straight Black is smooth, not bitter at all, with a sweet almost fruity flavor followed by a rich nuttiness.  I didn’t find it acidic at all and really enjoyed this cold brew with a splash of creamer.

The Vanilla Cold Brew on tap is also made with 100% organic ingredients and contains no sugar or dairy.   And like the Straight Black, the Vanilla cold brew has a smooth fruit-forward taste with just a touch of vanilla bean flavor.

Unlike other flavored cold brews that I have tasted, this one didn’t have a fake taste or weird aftertaste.  The vanilla flavor was more vanilla bean than vanilla extract.  It was lovely with a slice of cake.

Wandering Bear Coffee Review

In 2014, two caffeine-fuelled graduate students, Matt and Ben, started a competition to see who could make the tastiest cold brew ( 1 ). Since then, their collective obsession with making strong, smooth cold brew coffee led to the founding of Wandering Bear Coffee. 

So is this cold brew on tap worth the hype? Keep reading to find out.

Packaging – 4/5

Except for the 11-ounce single-serve bottles and 32-ounce cartons, the coffee on tap comes in a fully recyclable box, making it one of our most recommended sustainable coffee brands . Even the tap itself is made from sugarcane.

When you’re done with the cold brew, recycling the components is as simple as separating the plastic liner and the cardboard box.

In addition to the traditional nutrition facts, a QR code, and a short blurb about Matt and Ben—Wandering Bear’s co-founders—the packaging prominently features a silhouette of a black bear spread across the top and side of the box.

The color scheme is unassuming—featuring a black bear with a blue shadow and black-and-blue font. But the straightforward, informative copy and the cute bear are more than enough to entice any cold brew connoisseur.

Ease of Use – 4/5

Wandering Bear couldn’t have made untapping their coffee any easier. But you must muster a little courage of your own.

You’ll have to approach the black bear head-on to find the tap and break the seal. Turn the box over so that the bear is facing you. Find the perforated cutout, and pull the sugarcane tap out from inside the box.

To ensure the tap doesn’t slide around, Wandering Bear has placed a few notches on the body of the tap. Moreover, the flap of the box adjacent to the circular cutout fits neatly into those notches, keeping the tap at the proper angle for decanting. Once you break the seal, just press the button and decant it into your glass.

We did notice that the cold brew comes out quite slowly, so it does take a little patience to fill a standard 16-ounce glass. Moreover, once you’re more than three-quarters of the way through the cold brew, you’ll have to balance the tap—via one of those notches—on the edge of the glass, tilt the box with one hand, and press the button with the other.

Unfortunately, this makes for a rather precarious pour. We created a non-slip surface using a dampened paper towel to keep our glass from sliding around our countertop. Once the glass was stable, it took a bit of maneuvering to find just the right angle for the coffee to decant.

Finally, when we were pouring those last drops from the bottom of the bag, we had to take the plastic liner out and coax the coffee into our glass.

Value for Money – 5/5

Wandering Bear’s cold brew coffee drinks come in various flavors and sizes. For this review, we chose the 96-ounce box.

The copy on the side panel says there are 16 six-ounce servings per box. Each six-ounce glass is as strong as two shots of espresso, and at $2.25 per glass, this is an excellent deal. If you drink just one glass of cold brew a day, the 96-ounce box will last you two weeks.

Flavor – 5/5

While having a cold brew on tap is great, it’s what’s inside that counts. And Wandering Bear does not disappoint. Keep reading for some general notes on Wandering Bear’s cold brew, followed by a few notes on the specific types we chose.

First, this cold brew is strong and smooth ; across all three varieties, it is bold without any bitterness. So whether you’re a cold brew connoisseur or just starting your journey, Wandering Bear has struck the perfect balance between a bold, aromatic cup and a smooth one.

Secondly, Wandering Bear uses only 100% organic arabica beans . In line with their commitment to sustainability, they only use beans from sustainable coffee farms and cooperatives throughout Nicaragua, Mexico, Colombia, and Peru.

What’s more, despite having noticeable hints of flavor, all of Wandering Bear’s coffees are sugar-free. And because all their cold brew coffee is dairy-free, you can add any dairy substitute you prefer.

Finally, while each of the three flavors we tried was excellent, if you’re looking for the pure, Wandering Bear experience, we’d suggest going with the Straight Black cold brew.

The first variant we untapped was vanilla. To our surprise, the ingredients list was very straightforward: filtered water, organic coffee beans from Peru, and natural organic flavor. Unfortunately, because there was a small tear in the corner of the plastic liner, we had to transfer it to another container.

But despite that minor hiccup, this flavor was genuinely delightful. Wandering Bear describes this variety as “Coffee forward with subtle hints of vanilla,” which was very accurate in our experience.

The aroma was very reminiscent of a fresh-baked vanilla cupcake. As you sip, hints of cream and marshmallows are very apparent.

As with the previous flavor, this flavor was “coffee forward with subtle hints of mocha.” The ingredients list was the same as the vanilla variety.

This time, everything went as expected. After pulling the spout out of the circular cutout and moving the other flap out of the way, we could decant as per Wandering Bear’s instructions.

Unlike the vanilla variety above, the cold mocha brew was bolder in aroma and flavor. The aroma reminded us of baker’s chocolate and caramel, while a pecan-like nuttiness and a slight hint of brightness came through in the taste.

Overall, we enjoyed the mocha more than the vanilla flavor because the slight nuttiness and the chocolate aroma were a much more natural pairing for Wandering Bear’s base Peruvian cold brew.

Straight Black Cold Brew

Finally, we’ve saved the best for last. Wandering Bear notes that this cold brew is “Coffee forward, extra strong, and surprisingly smooth.” And this time, the ingredients list is even simpler: filtered water and 100% organic Peruvian arabica coffee.

Though we love mocha and vanilla, we were looking forward to tasting Wandering Bear’s Straight Black because it’d give us the best gauge of their coffee quality. And honestly, it was, hands-down, our favorite.

Many cold brew coffees have a muddled flavor profile with very few subtle notes. But Wandering Bear’s Straight Black cold brew coffee has an aroma that is sweet and buttery, like a pie crust, with a subtle note of plum. As with the other cold brews, the Straight Black was smooth with no lingering smoky or bitter notes.

There was a subtle caramelized sweetness—somewhere between honey, caramel, and molasses.

While there weren’t too many citrus or stone fruit notes, there was still a subtle hint of brightness to keep the cup from becoming too heavy. To our palates, it lay somewhere between green apple and fresh strawberry, which made this a very well-balanced, smooth cup.

While you could add in milk, flavored syrups, or use it to make a nice pumpkin spice latte, this cold brew is smooth enough to drink on its own.

Do not Buy Wandering Bear’s Cold Brew Coffee If…

• You’re on a tight budget: While Wandering Bear’s coffees are a great value for the money, they’re still more expensive than making your own cold brew . In making cold brew from scratch, you’re in full control of the types of coffee beans you use and can stick to the single-origins or high-quality blends you prefer. Whether it’s a new workout routine on the Peloton or a family-friendly meal prepping hack, I’m all in.

 So, when I kept seeing ads on Facebook for Wandering Bear Iced Coffee , specifically their tantalizing Coconut flavor, it felt like the universe was sending me a sign. I love coconut iced coffee, so I knew I had to try it!

The promise of a convenient, coffee-shop quality brew right from my fridge was too good to pass up.

Ordering (or Attempting To)

With high hopes and a serious need for caffeine, I ventured onto their website, ready to place my order. But unfortunately, the Coconut flavor was nowhere to be found on the site. The dream of tropical coffee bliss was starting to seem more like a mirage.

After reaching out to customer service, they informed me that their seasonal flavors tend to sell out quickly – a testament to their popularity, but a disappointment for latecomers like myself, especially since they were running an ad campaign.

But I wasn’t ready to abandon ship just yet.

 I decided to go with their Black Iced Coffee, hoping it could at least fill the void left by the elusive Coconut flavor. And oh boy, did it deliver!

Tasting the Coffee

Upon tasting it, the richness and depth of flavor were instantly noticeable. The smoothness was reminiscent of the cold brew from my favorite coffee shop, and it was certainly stronger than the coffee I whip up with my Nespresso. 

This wasn’t just some off-the-shelf iced coffee; this was a high-quality brew that could hold its own.

Aside from the remarkable taste, the convenience of having this box in my fridge cannot be overstated. With a whopping 16 cups in each box, I found myself set for a good while. 

And the price tag?

 At $28.99 per box, each 16 oz pour works out to be just $1.81 – way cheaper than a trip to the coffee shop where I’m paying over $4 for a cup of cold brew.

So, despite the initial setback with the Coconut flavor, Wandering Bear’s Black Iced Coffee has proven to be a worthy addition to my fridge , promising a quick, delicious start to my busy mornings.

Overall, I found the pros significantly outweigh the cons. 

Wandering Bear Iced Coffee is a quality product that offers an excellent balance of convenience, taste, and value, especially for those of us who crave a good cup of iced coffee to kick-start our busy days.

To wrap it all up, my experience with Wandering Bear Iced Coffee has been overwhelmingly positive. 

Despite some initial hiccups in the ordering process and a higher-than-average price tag, the taste, quality, and convenience offered by Wandering Bear make it a clear winner in my book. 

The fun, eco-friendly packaging and the ease of having a fresh, delicious iced coffee on tap right from my fridge far outweigh the cons.

Wandering Bear Cold Brew Review

Wandering Bear is a coffee company based in New York, New York. They sell Fair Trade organic cold brew coffee in three flavors: Straight Black, Vanilla Coconut and Mocha Coconut.

Each of the flavors come in 11 fluid ounce cartons. The Straight Black is also offered as a 96 fluid ounce box or a 36 fluid ounce box (8-pack), each that come with a tap (like boxed wine only better!). The cartons are perfect for individual servings or on the go, while the box is perfect for a party, brunch or other larger get together (or if you’re really thirsty).

The coffee had great flavor and was one of the best pre-packaged coffees I’ve had recently. It has a bold taste—which stands up even when diluted as the ice melts—and is really smooth. The coffee does a nice job of balancing the boldness and flavor notes to make it really easy to drink.

My favorite of the three was definitely Straight Black. Given the very limited additions to the flavored versions, I was impressed with their quality, but felt they each tasted a bit artificial.

There seem to be more and more cold brew coffees pushing the higher threshold for price. I currently consider $3-4/serving the average for quality ready-to-drink cold brew. Wandering Bear comes in at $4/carton for the individual servings, so on the higher end of the average. At that price point, I don’t think I’d drink this every day, but it is good enough I’d purchase a 12-pack and drink them occasionally throughout the summer. If you are an every-day afternoon cold brew drinker, the Straight Black boxes are great options. They come in a 96 fluid ounce box for $30 or an 8-pack of 36 fluid ounce boxes, which come to $2.50 or $2.00 per 8oz serving, respectively—both of which are much more reasonable.

Quality/Ingredients

I was most impressed with the quality of ingredients in Wandering Bear’s coffee. Many cold brew coffees are either loaded with sugar or other flavoring or just don’t taste great without adding some cream. With Wandering Bear Straight Black cold brew, that isn’t the case. It tastes great black and contains nothing but organic coffee (currently from Peru) and water—no sugar or other ingredients. The Mocha and Vanilla flavors also contain 0 grams of sugar and are flavored with organic coconut cream and either organic cocoa extract or organic natural flavors, respectively. Their coffee is also Fair Trade certified and organic certified (though while the Mocha and Vanilla options contain all organic ingredients, they do not carry the organic seal).

Many times the pre-packaged cold brews can be a bit flat without the definition and complexity you get in a fresh-brewed pour over. I didn’t find that to be the case with Wandering Bear. The Straight Black option was a balanced cup, but had some nice brightness at the beginning and a smooth, chocolatey finish.

While the flavorings overshadowed the complexity a bit in the Mocha and Vanilla options, you get the added complexity of either of their respective flavors layered on top of the coffee.

The Bottom Line

Wandering Bear is a bit more expensive than some other cold brew options, but it has some of the highest quality ingredients around and the Straight Black is one of the best tasting pre-packaged cold brews I’ve had to date. If organic, natural ingredients are important to you, I don’t think you’ll find a much better option than Wandering Bear and if you like your cold brew black without added sugar or cream, Wandering Bear Straight Black is one of the best I’ve had.

Who Makes the Best Cold Brew? We Tried Starbucks, Stumptown, and More

Cold brew’s origins date back to a time long before Brooklyn coffee shops installed floating shelves, hung pothos plants, and employed a generation of tattooed baristas. The first mention of cold brew appears in 17th century Japan, where tea was cold-brewed in a technique called mizudashi. As the story goes, when the Dutch arrived in Japan in 1600, they applied that method to coffee, and cold brew was born.

Four centuries later, cold brew exploded in popularity in the US during the third-wave coffee movement of the 2010s, when highlighting coffee beans’ origins and tasting subtle notes like “unripe berry” and “burnt caramel” became important to more drinkers. Coffee nerdery became cool. People loved cold brew for its smooth, less acidic flavor—and also for its high caffeine content. Soon there was nitro cold brew , coffee infused with nitrogen for a creamier texture, and it wasn’t long before major retailers began stocking cold brew on their shelves.

In grocery stores now, cold brew options stretch as far as the eye can see. Most of them have the same two ingredients—water and coffee—but there’s still a lot of flavor variations between brands. This one might be all bitterness; that one might have some kind of alien sweetness. That’s why we put eight nationally available cold brews through a blind taste test to find the absolute best.

Four were ready to drink and the rest were concentrates that we diluted according to their package instructions. We tried them black, with no creamer or sweetener, over ice. We wanted a cold brew that had a bright acidity that didn’t overpower the fruity, roasty, toasty notes. We also wanted to make sure our cold brew wasn’t too watery and that it had a tannic, wake-you-up aroma.

It was a jittery 35 minutes, but in the end, one cold brew reigned supreme.

Califia Farms Pure Black Medium Roast Cold Brew

What’s inside: In small print underneath the nutritional data, Califia boasts that its coffee is Rainforest Alliance Certified . That means the beans come from farms that pay their workers a fair wage and prioritize sustainability, two huge issues in the coffee farming and production industries .

The verdict: Initial sniffs suggested that Califia might have a strong showing—dare I say its aroma made our jaws ache in anticipation—but first sips proved otherwise. There was a strange taste, like a paper cup. “This tastes like the coffee filter,” senior service editor Kelsey Jane Youngman declared. That papery taste is often a result of oxidized coffee beans during the cold-brew production process.

Starbucks Black Unsweetened Cold Brew Coffee

What’s inside: The ingredients list here is just water and coffee, like most other cold brews. Starbucks’s cold brew packaging boasts “ethical sourcing standards,” which, per the label, “positively impact the lives and livelihoods of coffee farmers and their communities.” Despite these claims, a lawsuit alleges that Starbucks sources from farms that have committed human rights and labor violations.

The verdict: Malty flavor, balanced acid, mild bitterness—our tasters thought this coffee’s flavor was “fine.” Some got a sorta-sweet, artificial-vanilla vibe, but it wasn’t altogether unpleasant; there’s a reason Starbucks serves those vanilla lattes across the globe. If you’re a self-proclaimed caffeine fiend like us, you may prefer something stronger.

Pop and Bottle Classic Coffee Super Concentrate

What’s inside: In addition to steeping time, the ratio of water to ground coffee influences how strong cold brew ends up. Concentrate is a different story; in a concentrate, the amount of water gets reduced, not unlike buying chicken bouillon paste instead of chicken stock. It means you can dilute the coffee to your preference and you get more cups out of a smaller package.

The verdict: Pop and Bottle is almost as thick as syrup before it’s diluted. Senior cooking editor Emma Laperruque said it smells like unsweetened chocolate, and Kelsey likened it, less charitably, to coffee left at the bottom of the pot. That intense acrid aroma gave way to a chocolaty flavor—the fancy kind that’s so dark it starts to taste a little fruity. It was still more watery than we’d like; next time we’d dilute it less than the label recommends.

Wandering Bear Straight Black Organic Cold Brew Coffee

What’s inside: Per its label, this coffee is made with Arabica beans from Peru, Mexico, and Nicaragua. Arabica is thought to be the first species of the coffee plant to be cultivated, and it’s one of the most popular beans used in coffee making today.

The verdict: Emma thought her cup of Wandering Bear smelled like a coffee shop—exactly as coffee should smell, really. Our tasters hemmed and hawed for a while, discussing the positives (a tart blueberry flavor, a lovely seize of bitterness) and the negatives (a sourness that recipe copy and production assistant Carly Westerfield described as “lactic sourness,” like in milk). In the end, everyone agreed that the balance could be better. If you like half-and-half in your coffee, Wandering Bear could be your cold brew match.

Stok Un-Sweet Black Cold Brew Coffee

What’s inside: In addition to coffee and water, this cold brew includes “natural flavors.” The FDA definition of natural flavors is quite broad , which means that this could be pretty much anything, as long as it’s derived from a natural source like a plant or animal.

The verdict: Cold brew, our tasters said, should be complex and bitter, with a robust roasty flavor. But Stok was a little thin, and it had a sweetness that Emma described as “artificial vanilla.” Some tasters liked how that sweet flavor balanced the acid bitterness of the coffee, others felt it tasted more like a Starbucks Frappuccino. It wasn’t the bracing sip of cold brew that would get you through a 9 a.m. meeting, but it did remind us of those coffee drinks we used to buy at the mall circa 2004.

Chameleon Black Cold Brew Coffee Concentrate

What’s inside: No surprises on Chameleon’s ingredients list, but one detail caught our eye—the coffee used to make this cold brew is “medium roast.” That means the beans are roasted at a lower temperature, for a shorter time, than in a dark roast. Those medium-roast beans will have more caffeine and more delicate flavors, but less body.

The verdict: “This smells amazing,” Emma swooned when she took a whiff of the Chameleon cold brew in her cup. Other tasters agreed, noting its cozy, first-bonfire-of-the-summer flavor. On first sips, we got a golden grassy flavor, like a pumpkin patch in fall. But those flavors were difficult to detect since the cold brew was watery. We diluted this concentrate in a 1:1 ratio, as instructed. For the rest of the bottle, we’d use a little less water to send those invigorating flavors straight to the moon.

La Colombe Unsweetened Colombian Cold Brew

What’s inside: Water and coffee, once again. Messaging on the bottle also mentions that each 12-oz. serving contains 230 milligrams of caffeine. That’s about three times the amount of caffeine you’d find in a cup of hot coffee.

The verdict: La Colombe cold brew was another favorite for our testers. Positive marks started with the smell—caramel! molasses!—and continued into the actual tasting itself. Our tasters flipped over how smooth this cold brew was. There was no sting of tongue-clenching, mouth-drying acidity. But La Colombe still managed to retain a bracing bitterness to balance out its sunnier notes. We would happily sip this through a Krazy Straw on a hot summer afternoon, but there was one other brand that we loved even more.

Stumptown Coffee Roasters Cold Brew Concentrate

What’s inside: Somehow, Stumptown’s cold brew contains even more caffeine than La Colombe’s. At 235 milligrams of caffeine per 10-oz. serving, that makes just over a full gram of caffeine per bottle. We can’t stress this enough, don’t drink the whole bottle in one sitting. Please.

The verdict: Stumptown has everything you want in a cold brew. The tannic aroma of juicy berries, a whoosh of toasty malt, and a smooth aftertaste that makes you crave your next sip. Commerce producer Alaina Chou said Stumptown was “the most complex” cold brew we tested. Those bright, tart flavors gave way to butterscotch that’s just short of burnt. Stumptown is the kind of cold brew that makes waking up early feel worth it, everyone agreed. “This tastes like the cold brew you’d spend seven dollars on at a coffee shop,” Carly said.

For all the coffee lovers out there, I recently came across a great coffee brand called Wandering Bear Coffee that you need to check out! If you’ve never heard of Wandering Bear Coffee they actually offer 100% organic cold brew coffee that is ready to be enjoyed with no time consuming preparation needed! Their cold brew coffee comes in six variety of flavors to choose from such as: Straight Black, Vanilla, Caramel, Mocha, Decaf Black, and Toasted Coconut but the best part is that it’s ready to drink within seconds straight from your fridge!

Wandering Bear Cold Brew Reviews: Comparing the Top 3 Flavors

Straight Black

The first brew we made was the straight black type. Our favorite and most consistently strong tasted yet smooth as ice. And yes it was over ice. Don’t get confused, cold brew is legit. We filled a mug up with some ice. Then poured the black brew into it. We sipped our way straight to joy-Ville!

We tried it also in a few different ways, like creamer with and without, some sweetener. Overall, the flavor was bold and non-bitter. The flavor profile was very refreshing tasting.

Our favorite non-traditional brew flavor of the three we’ve tested. We were not a big fan of being punched in our mouths with exaggerated vanilla flavor. Some brands of vanilla coffee try to shower you in that front. As a result, you can’t offer enough coffee flavor. Not the case here.

This brew was in harmony with vanilla. We tested it without and with added sweetener. We must admit if you like a tad more black coffee, you will be able to drink it without any extra sweetener.

Hazelnut was not our jam prior to this testing. So the idea of tasting this out was not the first thing on our minds. But, after we tried we became fans. The subtle flavors were balanced. Such will easily help you drink more of it throughout the day.

Coffee Analysis

The coffee has great flavor and is one of the best pre-packaged coffee brands we’ve come across recently. It is really smooth and offers a bold taste that holds up even when diluted as the ice melts. The coffee does a clean job of balancing the flavor and boldness of undertones to make it really a joy to drink.

Our favorite among the 3 was Straight Black. Given the limited additions to the flavored types, we were impressed with their prime quality.

Quality And Ingredients

While conducting the Wandering Bear coffee review, we were most impressed with the quality of the ingredients in the coffee. Many cold brew coffees are either loaded with other flavorings or sugar or just don’t taste good without cream. With Wandering Bears’ Straight Black cold brew, such isn’t the case at all.

It tastes authentic black and consists of nothing but organic coffee which they currently import from Peru and filtered water. No sugar or any other ingredients. The Vanilla and Mocha flavors also contain Zero grams of sugar. They are also flavored with natural coconut cream. Created from either organic natural flavors or, cocoa extract respectively.

Their coffee is also certified by the Organic and Fair Trade agreement . Though the Vanilla and Mocha variants have all organic ingredients, they do not have the organic seal.

Most of the time the pre-packaged cold brews can be flat without the proper definition. Also, the complex procedures can get in your way of having a fresh-brewed pour-over. We did not find that to be an issue with Wandering Bear. The Straight Black option was balanced and had some brightness at the start and a chocolatey smooth finish.

While the flavorings have overshadowed the sophistication a bit in the Vanilla and Mocha flavors, you will find the added complexity layered on top of the coffee of either of their respective flavors.
