Road To Hana

Hana offers some of the most beautiful and spiritual sites. Leave some room for the unimaginable as we explore waterfalls, cliffs, tidepools and other local marvels on this full-day tour.

About Epic Maui Hikes

We connect people to themselves, and to the island. We take them on adventures that inspire, motivate, and invigorate them, including cliff jumping and showering in waterfalls. We photograph every part of their journey with us and give them memories that will last a lifetime.

See What Makes our Maui Hikes so Epic

I participated in the Epic Waterfall Adventure and it was a wonderful experience. I was with my family of all ages and we had the best guide to show us all of the beautiful things this island offers. I would recommend Mike Blue to everyone who wants to get the best knowledge and experience of the waterfalls. He took lots of pictures and videos of us the entire time and he gave us a few extra treats to snack on the way. We ate apples of trees and saw many places. 10/10 experience with Mike and he has lived here most of his life so he new all the private waterfalls. Thank you so much!

Sean was our guide and we loved him. Conversation was easy, we felt well informed and safe, and the scenery was beautiful. We were able to explore way more than we ever would have tried if we were solo (crossing streams, climbing into waterfalls, rope/cliff jumping, eating flowers), and Sean took some great pics/video on his go-pro and gave us the memory card at the end of the hike. This hike was not strenuous in any way, just a little technical, and definitely muddy, which was all part of the fun. Be prepared to get wet!

Epic Maui Hikes was the absolute best experience I had on Maui! It was exactly the kind of adventure I was looking for! Our guide was full of aloha spirit and took us to places that were breathtaking. He was knowledgeable of the island, took as many pictures of us as we wanted, and fulfilled everything that we wanted to see. I couldn’t of asked for a better time on island. HANDS DOWN, unbelievable!

Bryce was an amazing tour guide. We enjoyed the almost mile hike to the waterfall. I would say it is in the moderate category. The walking sticks Bryce provided made the trip that much better. The stunning views of the waterfall were top notch. Best part - the cliff jumping and rope swing! Highly recommend this adventure. It will not disappoint!

Amazing hike into the bamboo forest and waterfalls! Lauren was our guide and went the extra mile to ensure we had the best experience. She picked us up from the cruise port and gave us a ton of info on Hawaiian culture and wildlife while we drove to our destination. Along our tour we saw lots of bamboo while we hiked to beautiful waterfalls. We were able to play in the water and jump off rock cliffs, all while our guide took awesome GoPro footage the entire time. The terrain was muddy and slick in spots, so bring some good hiking/water shoes! After our tour was over, Lauren took us to an awesome beach where we saw sea turtles both in the water and sunbathing on the sand. Highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for high adventure!

Caitlin was a wonderful guide! We had such a good time! The bamboo forest was a tough hike, but it was well worth it for the photogenic views! Just remember to bring shoes that you do not care for - the trail can become very muddy, especially when it rains, and you need to cross rivers sometimes - it is easier to just go through the water. Overall, a fun and exhilarating hike!

At first I was skeptical, Lauren put all my fears to rest. My sons ( college students) and I had a blast. Get ready to get muddy. I have a handicap, I get dizzy sometimes and I don't have strength in my arms) Lauren was so patient and very helpful. Her knowledge and love for the island shows. Mohala

The tours on this page offer you a chance to go experience this beauty through the eyes of a professional guide ... you will see more and understand more than going it alone! The first three tours all offer varying levels of hiking in waterfall areas, while the fourth tour features the rugged and lunar-like landscape of Haleakala, Maui's 10,000 foot tall volcano.

Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure

Waterfall & Rainforest Hiking Adventure

hiking tours maui

$159.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

This is the most popular hike, which takes place in a unique valley with a variety of waterfalls ranging in height from 10 to 40 feet on two different streams. There are large, clear swimming holes under each of the falls. Adding to your adventure, there are several spots where you can jump safely from rock ledges into the waterfall pools below, which makes a fantastic photo opportunity. Learn about Maui's wonders from the naturalist guides, and end the hike with a natural "shower" under a Hawaiian waterfall. The largest of these falls has ferns that hang down from a huge overhanging ledge, and you can walk completely behind the falls! A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour.

Meeting Point: Meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Kahului. Complimentary pick up is also available at Kahului Harbor for Pride of America guests. Pickup from South Shore and West Side hotels is available for $35 per person for those without rental cars.

Difficulty: Easy to moderate hiking Hiking Distance: 2.5 miles Tour Length: 5-6 hours Minimum age: 6 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $250 per vehicle is added.

Morning Waterfall Walk

hiking tours maui

$109.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

Enjoy two waterfalls on a shorter one-mile walk in the lower portion of this beautiful rainforest valley. This is the shorter version of the popular Waterfall & Rainforest Hiking Adventure; perfect if you have limited time, don't want to walk TOO far, or have younger children. You may swim under 10 and 20 foot waterfalls and jump off rock ledges into the waterfall pools if you are really adventurous! A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water and snacks are served on this tour.

Difficulty: Easy walking Hiking Distance: 1 mile Tour Length: 3-4 hours Minimum age: 4 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $200 per vehicle is added.

Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure

hiking tours maui

$279.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

This full-day excursion completely circles the east side of Maui on the way to and from the day's premier hiking stop at Oheo Gulch. This area is known as "The 7 Sacred Pools" but as you hike about the area that most tourists go, you'll discover there's a lot more than 7 pools! You'll enjoy a hike through bamboo forests with views of many smaller waterfalls, one 200 foot waterfall, and the highlight is standing near the bottom of 400' Waimoku Falls! You will also experience a variety of waterfall and ocean overlooks on the scenic "Road to Hana" and beyond. This is a long, epic day you will remember forever. A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour.

Meeting Point: This tour includes complimentary pickup at most Maui hotels. For those staying outside of the pickup area, meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Central Maui.

Difficulty: Moderate Hiking Distance: 4.5 miles Tour Length: 11 hours from Central Maui Minimum age: 8 years old

Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience

hiking tours maui

$199.00 per Hiker (plus 4.712% Hawaii sales tax)

No Maui vacation would be complete without viewing the magnificence of Haleakala Crater. From the 10,000 foot summit the views of the Big Island, West Maui, Molokini, Kahoolawe, Lanai, and Molokai are astounding. Haleakala is a dormant volcano, but activity here was recent enough that the landscape is otherworldly. On this hiking tour into Haleakala Crater you will experience two different trails at two different elevations with completely different environments. The first trail starts at the summit and you'll hike for two miles ... past huge cinder cones which have partially filled in the erosional valley that forms Haleakala's large "crater." The second trail is at the 8,000 foot elevation and you will hike for two miles on a lava lined trail with rare native plant species. Sightings of Hawaii's state bird, the Nene, are frequent in this area. A backpack, rain gear, and bug repellent are provided; water, snacks, and lunch are served on this tour. Completely closed-toed shoes are required due to volcanic cinders. No Tevas, sandals, crocs, etc.

Meeting Point: Meet your guide at the county Park-n-Ride lot in Central Maui.

This tour is only operated on THURSDAYS. Difficulty: Moderate Hiking Distance: 4 miles Tour Length: 7 hours Minimum age: 8 years old Gratuity: Gratuity is optional (but encouraged) for parties of 6 or less. For parties of 7 or more a gratuity of $250 per vehicle is added.

ACTIVITY TIPS

Kevin at Falls

I am often asked "why go on a hiking tour? Can't I just go and experience the same thing on my own?"

The answer to that question is a definitive "no." You could walk down the same trail on your own, and your experience will be completely different. The presence of a knowledgable local guide who loves the "aina" (land) can make all the difference in your understanding and appreciation of everything that you see. You'll learn about plants that have uses that you never imagined. You'll taste fruits that are foreign to you. You'll learn of history and geology of the area that offers insight you wouldn't get going there alone. Hike Maui, the company that organizes these tours, likes to refer to their guides as "the secret ingredient for your experience."

Obviously a guide also knows exactly where these places are so your day in the magical rainforest or volcanic landscape is maximized. No hunting for that elusive waterfall ... you'll go straight there and have more time to soak it all in. A guide who knows the "aina" will help keep you safe, and provide support if you need it. Would you like to jump off a cliff into a waterfall pool below? Doesn't it sound like a good idea to have a guide who can tell you where it is safe to jump and where there a rocks hiding below the surface???

If you have the time and are up for a longer hike with more elevation gain, the Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure is a fantastic day! This is a long tour with a lot of riding ... the drive to and from the trailhead is 2.5 hours each way with lots of twists and turns and curves and one lane bridges and miles of rugged roads on the back side of Haleakala. When you are standing near the bottom of 400' Waimoku Falls you'll agree it was all worth it!

The Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure is the most popular tour. This is the event that will truly make you glad you had a guide with you. As you hike through an "off-the-grid" farming area you'll taste fruit you've maybe never seen before. Your guide will impress you with his or her ability to take plants from the jungle and demonstrate uses you've never thought of. You'll probably learn what a tapioca plant looks like (yes, it comes from a plant ... not from a jar with the Gerber Baby on it).

For those who want to get out in the jungle but aren't up for a longer hike, the Morning Waterfall Walk is perfect ... especially for multi-generational groups where grandma wants to take pictures of the grandkids jumping from waterfalls. The walking is easy and the distance is short, and you'll see waterfalls that other people who aren't with a guide will completely miss!

The Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience is in a category all its own. While most people think of Maui hiking centered around waterfalls, this hike is centered around a volcanic landscape that is often compared to that of the moon (or Mars). As a matter of fact, Haleakala was the backdrop for one of the final Mars scenes in the movie "Total Recall." One thing to keep in mind for this tour ... due to its elevation the air is much cooler. You are going to want to dress in layers for this one, keeping in mind that the air temperature can vary widely on this tour and daytime temperatures at 10,000 feet are often in the high 40's to low 50's. Yes, once every three or four years the summit of Haleakala even gets a light dusting of snow. Don't believe me? Check out this snowy photo of Haleakala I took from my driveway in Upper Kula. This photo actually made the front page of a Honolulu newspaper and made the rounds in the national news!

If you are really into hiking, you might consider doing two of these tours ... either the Ultimate Hana Full Day Adventure or the Waterfall and Rainforest Hiking Adventure on one day paired with the Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience on another.

A word about gratuities ... it is traditional for guides in such a service industry to rely on gratuities for a significant portion of their income. This time-honored tradition promotes excellence in service and you might want to bring along cash in case you want to express your appreciation to your guide in this way. Please note that for larger parties of 7-10 people this tour operator asks us to include a $250 gratuity per vehicle in our billing for longer tours, and $200 per vehicle for the Waterfall Walk.

Overall rating

We had a great experience! The waterfalls at the original hike were not flowing due to not enough rain so our guide took us to some alternate falls and they were amazing! The road to Hana was breath taking!!

If you want to sit back and relax and hear about the history of the island, then definitely book this tour! You get to experience the back side of the island, the hike is definitely worth the 1000ft climb, but it's not f ... or beginners! It is muddy and there is rocks everywhere, so you definitely want good shoes and be able to hike uphill/steps for about 2 hours! The climb down only took about as hour but we didn't stop for any breaks! Tony was an awesome guide and if you are looking for a tour with waterfalls and history, do not hesitate to book this! Well worth the money!

This tour hits two trails in the park: a portion of the Sliding Sands Trail in the summit area and the Halemau’u trail. Sliding Sands and Halemau’u are separated by about 2,000 feet in elevation, and their climates could not be more different.

The first hike on this dual hiking adventure descends a mile down into the crater from the 10,000-foot summit. You’ll experience firsthand the Mars-like landscape and the deafening silence that the crater is known for. You’ll also learn interesting facts about the crater’s fascinating cultural and geological history from your naturalist guide.

After your first two miles are done and dusted, you’ll head to Halemau’u trailhead and meander the stony trail lined with low-lying native shrubs. The Halemauu trail leads up to the rim of the crater and a ridge known as the “ rainbow bridge .” From this vantage point, you’ll see an entirely different perspective on the crater.

● Get your hiking boots laced up; this tour is a full 7-hour day. ● Gotta stay fueled up on a long day of hiking! Lunch and snacks are included. ● The weather at Haleakala can change in the blink of an eye. Dressing in layers is recommended, but warm jackets are provided as well. ● Too much to carry? Don’t worry about it. Backpacks are provided. ● This tour can accommodate up to seven guests.

Private Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience

Top 5 Maui Hiking Tours Crater Hike

This full-day tour treks through both the sands in the high-elevation desert of Haleakala and through the native shrubland around Halemau’u. Departing at 8:30 am from Kahului park and ride, this tour safely navigates the windy road to the summit. From there, you’ll head into the interior of the crater via the Sliding Sands Trail while taking in the grandeur of the summit district.

After a moderate two-mile hike, you’ll hop in the van and head down to the Halemau’u Trail. This trek travels through an entirely different climate and offers views of Haleakala that few visitors get to experience. On clear days, you can peer down the Koolau Gap to the Keanae Coast, as well as take in the glory of Hanakauhi, an 8,000′ peak adjacent to the trail.

● This tour traverses about four miles total at elevations ranging from 8,000′ to 10,000′. ● Any junior trekkers out there? Kids age 8 and up are welcome. ● Lunch and snacks are provided to all guests.

14 Amazing Maui Hiking Trails

Here are Maui’s hiking trails you’ll want to enjoy during your trip to this island.

1. Haleakala – Sliding Sands Trail

The Haleakala Sliding Sands Trail is situated inside Haleakala National Park in Upcountry Maui. It is rated as a pretty challenging hike but is also widely revered as being worth the challenge.

The entire trip runs for about 5 miles, with the first 4 miles going down 2800 feet to the valley floor.

The final mile is an arduous hike-climb up Haleakala’s crater rim which is where the real challenge is. However, the views from the rim when you finally make it up are absolutely worth this hike at Mount Haleakala.

For less experienced hikers, it’s advised that you take a hiking pole and hiking boots, and essential items like water and sunscreen , and make sure you have a healthy meal before going on this Maui hiking trail in Haleakalā National Park.

2. Pipiwai Trail – Oheo Gulch

Situated above the Seven Sacred Pools (traditionally referred to as “Oheo Gulch”), Pipiwai Trail is one of the most beautiful hikes you can find in Maui.

With a slight elevation of 650ft, the trail runs a four-mile roundtrip hike that takes from 2.5 hours to about 5 hours to complete. The timing depends on how lost in nature you get and the Oheo Gulch has lots of natural beauty to ensnare anyone.

From the majestic waterfalls to the dense bamboo forests to the calm streams that invite passers-by to take a dip; there will be something to feast your eyes on at any point in time during this Maui hike.

3. Twin Falls

Twin Falls is a privately owned out-and-back trail that runs for about 2.4 km. Rated as a moderate hike, it is located close to Haiku and sees a lot of traffic throughout the year.

Primarily, it is used for nature trips as well as hiking . It features a gorgeous waterfall that many hikers have found pleasure in simply standing under.

However, the waterfall can bring too much water to the trail in the rainy season . Because of this, the upper trail is sometimes closed in the rainy season. This trail is dog-friendly, but dogs must be kept on leash.

If you want one of the best kid friendly hikes in Maui, just do the trail leading to the lower falls! It is only .25 miles and is very easy. It is located at mile marker 2 on the Hana Highway. It is a very easy hike with incredible scenery for everyone to enjoy.

4. Waihee Ridge Trail

Situated near Wailuku, another one of the top hikes in Maui is Waihe’e Ridge Trail, an out-and-back trail that extends for about 4 miles in the West Maui Mountains.

Rated as difficult, the trail features a waterfall as well as multiple activity options. You can go ridge-line hiking, enjoying the marvelous views of the great valley and the flora it contains. The trail is also suitable for trail runners of all skill levels.

It is the perfect hike for dogs, as hikers are permitted to bring along their dogs for the hike. However, they must be kept on a leash always.

5. Hosmer Grove & Supply Trails

Related to the Sliding Sands Trail by proximity, Hosmer Grove Trail is another trail that can be found in  Haleakala National Park in East Maui.

Unlike the Sliding Sands, this one is less challenging. However, Homer Grove gives hikers an enjoyable hike with beautiful scenery.

On this simple hike, you will be able to see some of the famous sandalwood trees in Hawaii. You will also find your way to the Supply Trail, an alternate trail that takes veers from Hosmer Grove and leads to a small forest of trees that are locally found in Hawaii but were brought by a foreigner in 1910.

It is another one of the fairly easy hikes on Maui.

6. Kings Gardens on Maui

Located in the old and secluded Kings Garden just outside Haiku, this beautiful trail features a picturesque garden and a breathtaking waterfall. It was rated the best hike on Maui for waterfall hiking adventures.

Open only to a few people every year, visitors to this amazing place are taken on a guided, moderately difficult hike through the gardens and up to the waterfall, getting a chance to look at fauna and flora that can only be found in this beautiful and ancient rainforest.

It is one of the best Maui guided hiking tours you’ll find!

7. Kapalua Coastal Trail

Kapalua Coastal Trail is a short hike that runs for 2 miles with very light traffic and an elevation of 46 meters. It is situated near Lahaina and offers some of the most scenic views. It is accessible to people of all skill levels and can be used for multiple activities.

Not only is hiking done here, but you can also bring kids here on nature trips, go trail running, or just hang out by Kapalua Beach.

Enjoy views of the forest as you walk, or look out to the coast, where the water meets the sky in the most beautiful and magnificent views possible.

It is one of the best Maui walking trails along the Pacific Ocean. Take a leisurely stroll at sea level with this walking path.

8. Iao Valley State Park

One of the kid friendly hikes Maui has to offer is the Iao Needle at Iao Valley State Park. It is a short hike that is actually paved and very easy to do. It does have some stairs but has places where you can rest if you need to.

It is a 0.6 mile trail in the West Maui Forest Reserve that is quite beautiful. There is also a swimming hole to enjoy, gardens, and much more! It’s one of the top West Maui mountains hiking trails for sure!

It is definitely one of the best Maui hikes for families.

Read my review of the Iao Needle hike with kids

9. Waikamoi Ridge Trail

Waikamoi Ridge Trail is another one of the Maui kid friendly hikes along the Road to Hana. It is located by mile marker 9 and is less than a mile long.

It can be slippery after it has rained, so be sure to prepare for mud and wear good shoes. There are parts that offer a paved path and it usually has a nice breeze too! The Waikamoi Ridge Trail is a relatively easy hike, so if you want to enjoy hiking through a forest, this is one of the places to hike in Maui!

10. Pali Trail

If you are looking for a challenging hike, try the Lahaina Pali Trail. The trail starts at two locations, each offering a different view and challenge.

It is a rocky trail that doesn’t offer much shade and has a lot of dry grass and lava rocks. But the views of the island and ocean are worth it!

If you want to do some difficult hiking in Maui Hawaii, the Pali Trail is for you!

11. Hoapili Trail

If you are in South Maui, head to the Hoapili Trail. It is a moderate hike that is around 6 miles round trip. The trail begins at La Perouse Bay and you will head to the Hanamanioa Point Lighthouse at Kanaio Beach before heading back.

This is one of the best trails in Maui for those wanting to be by the ocean. It does have lava rocks so be sure to wear good hiking boots, but it is a great hike to enjoy whether you do the entire hike or just a part of the trail.

12. Nakalele Blowhole

Another one of the West Maui hikes to enjoy is the Nakalele Blowhole. It is not a very long hike per se, but I think it’s worth it to include it in our list.

It does have some pretty tough terrain but it will be so much fun for your kids to see water shooting out of the blowhole.

You can’t go wrong with this simple West Maui hiking!

13. Hosmer Grove Trail

For another short hike, try out the Hosmer Grove Trail. It is close to the summit at Haleakala National Park and is only .6 miles for the entire loop trail.

It is one of the best hikes in Maui for family because it is so short and is great to see some birds and unique trees and plants you might not find anywhere else!

14. Ohai Loop Trail

The Ohai Loop Trail takes about an hour or so and is only 1.2 miles. It’s another one of the top Maui hikes for families located in West Maui.

It has a bench along the way so you can stop and enjoy the wonderful ocean views.

If you are looking for easy hikes in Maui to stretch your legs after driving, the Ohai Loop Trail is the perfect one for you.

Maui Hiking FAQs

Absolutely! In fact, Maui has some of the best hiking in Hawaii! From Haleakala Crater to trails off the Road to Hana, you won’t be disappointed with the top Maui hikes.

If you are planning on doing a lot of hiking on Maui, I’d suggest staying near Kihei or Paia. These areas will get you closer to the Road to Hana and Haleakala than staying in Lahaina or Kaanapali.

Sometimes. It’s really important to check online before you make the drive as 7 Sacred Pools (aka Oheo Gulch) is often closed after rain or stormy weather.

Twin Falls trail is probably the easiest hiking in Maui and offers an awesome waterfall to see! It’s one of the best waterfall hikes on the Road to Hana.

First-timer’s guide to Hawaii: 14 days, four islands, five flights, three rental cars and two missing hiking poles

Exploring Kauai

  • Susan Glaser, cleveland.com

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Fourteen days, four islands, five flights – a lot could go wrong, I feared, as I planned my first-ever trip to Hawaii.

I’m happy to report that almost nothing did.

I could attribute that to good planning, but I know it took a good bit of luck, too.

Before and after my trip, the Kona airport on the Big Island was shut down due to cracks in the runway; Kilauea Volcano, also on the Big Island, threatened to erupt, possibly upending my plans; and high-wind warnings were keeping visitors out of the ocean early during my stay.

I worried about all these things and more, mostly for naught.

The weather cooperated, no flights were delayed and I got to swim in the water everywhere I went.

This was one of the more complicated trips I’ve planned, and I admit to being a bit nervous -- starting with my 6 a.m. departure from Cleveland on a blustery Saturday in February.

I booked a flight to Honolulu on United Airlines with a scant 50-minute connection in San Francisco. Turns out, it was plenty of time.

The only glitch? Apparently you’re not supposed to pack hiking poles in your carry-on bag. But even then, Transportation Security Administration officers waited to enforce that rule until I was headed back to Cleveland – so I was able to use the poles during the whole trip before leaving them behind at Lihue Airport on Kauai.

Traveling with only a carry-on bag was important to me because I was booked on five flights – from and to Cleveland, plus three interisland hops. A carry-on bag is typically free on both United and Hawaiian airlines, but a checked bag would have cost as much as $40 per flight.

So I packed light (kind of) and kept the souvenirs to a minimum.

I started my tour on Oahu, where my husband and I spent a single night. Although I enjoyed the afternoon on Waikiki Beach, our main reason for starting here was to tour Pearl Harbor National Memorial . It’s a must-see for every American.

From Honolulu, we flew to Maui for three full days of touring, followed by five days on the Big Island and five days on Kauai.

I scheduled Kauai last because I figured it would be my favorite island, as well as the most relaxing. I figured correctly on both counts.

We flew home from Kauai on an overnight flight to Denver, where we connected to Cleveland.

Among the highlights:

* Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island

* Supporting the businesses and chronicling the comeback of West Maui after devastating wildfires last summer

* The Road to Hana on Maui

* Hiking the Napali Coast on Kauai

* Snorkeling Kealakekua Bay on the Big Island

* Doors-off helicopter tour of Kauai

* Waimea Canyon on Kauai

There were certainly activities and attractions that we missed – notably stargazing atop Mauna Kea, the Big Island’s massive 13,796-foot-high volcano. Traveling from Cleveland in February, I wasn’t excited about donning full-winter gear for what typically is a cold, blustery tour. Still, I’m certain I missed something special.

Keeping costs down

No way around it – Hawaii is a very expensive destination, from hotel prices to rental cars to food. Though I considered this a bucket-list trip – and I wasn’t trying to keep to a strict budget -- I didn’t want to (completely) break the bank. I tried to keep overnight costs below $300 a night, and for the most part, I succeeded.

The helicopter tour was the single most expensive activity we did – $324 per person. But it was spectacular.

Food was expensive, too. We had access to a kitchen at most of the places we stayed and typically ate breakfast in our condo before heading out for the day. We could have made it cheaper by cooking dinner in our condo, but we opted to eat most dinners out.

Exploring Kauai

Mai Tais at Duke's Kauai on the final night of a two-week Hawaiian tour. Susan Glaser, Cleveland.com

A taste of Hawaii

We ate seafood every day, tried Spam, poke and lots of shave ice. Among the highlights:

* Many, many Mai Tais. I’m not sure I’d ever had one of these rum drinks before, but I made up for it on this trip. The traditional Tiki drink combines rum, curacao, orgeat syrup and lime juice. The best I had was at Nalu’s South Shore Grill in Kihei, Maui. The food at Nalu’s was terrific, too.

* Spam musubi, a traditional Hawaiian lunch that was popular with plantation workers. It combines a slice of Spam, rice and nori (seaweed). I wasn’t sure I would like it, but I did – enjoyed at the Pine Tree Café near the Kona airport.

* A smorgasbord of traditional Hawaiian fare at the Island Breeze Luau at the Courtyard by Marriott Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel on the Big Island. Among the buffet items: poke, kalua pork, haupia, and poi – the bland, starchy paste that is made from the taro plant. It was the only Hawaiian food that I didn’t care for.

* Lots and lots of shave ice. I figured this was just a fancy snow cone, but I was wrong. The best shave ice I had combined delicate ice shavings atop ice cream, mochi, boba and a rainbow of flavors at a place called Aloha Icelabs in Waikiki.

Experiencing Hawaiian culture

I made an effort, too, to learn some Hawaiian history and experience culture during the trip.

Among our stops: Hulihee Palace , the summer house for King Kalakaua and Queen Kapiolani on Kailua-Kona; Kealakekua Bay State Historical Park , also on the Big Island, where the sacred Hikiau Heiau temple once stood; and Wailua River State Park on Kauai, where the remains of four major temples are part of the Wailua Heritage Trail.

No, you can’t take hiking poles in your carry-on bag (and other TSA misadventures)

By AUDREY McAVOY (Associated Press)

HONOLULU — A single mother of two, Amy Chadwick spent years scrimping and saving to buy a house in the town of Lahaina on the Hawaiian island of Maui. But after a devastating fire leveled Lahaina in August and reduced Chadwick’s home to white dust, the cheapest rental she could find for her family and dogs cost $10,000 a month.

Chadwick, a fine-dining server, moved to Florida where she could stretch her homeowners insurance dollars. She’s worried Maui’s exorbitant rental prices, driven in part by vacation rentals that hog a limited housing supply, will hollow out her tight-knit town.

Most people in Lahaina work for hotels, restaurants and tour companies and can’t afford $5,000 to $10,000 a month in rent, she said.

“You’re pushing out an entire community of service industry people. So no one’s going to be able to support the tourism that you’re putting ahead of your community,” Chadwick said by phone from her new home in Satellite Beach on Florida’s Space Coast. “Nothing good is going to come of it unless they take a serious stance, putting their foot down and really regulating these short-term rentals.”

The Aug. 8 wildfire killed 101 people and destroyed housing for 6,200 families, amplifying Maui’s already acute housing shortage and laying bare the enormous presence of vacation rentals in Lahaina. It reminded lawmakers that short-term rentals are an issue across Hawaii, prompting them to consider bills that would give counties the authority to phase them out.

Gov. Josh Green got so frustrated he blurted an expletive during a recent news conference.

“This fire uncovered a clear truth, which is we have too many short-term rentals owned by too many individuals on the mainland and it is b–——t,” Green said. “And our people deserve housing, here.”

Vacation rentals are a popular alternative to hotels for those seeking kitchens, lower costs and opportunities to sample everyday island life. Supporters say they boost tourism, the state’s biggest employer. Critics revile them for inflating housing costs, upending neighborhoods and contributing to the forces pushing locals and Native Hawaiians to leave Hawaii for less expensive states.

This migration has become a major concern in Lahaina. The Council for Native Hawaiian Advancement, a nonprofit, estimates at least 1,500 households — or a quarter of those who lost their homes — have left since the August wildfire.

The blaze burned single family homes and apartments in and around downtown, which is the core of Lahaina’s residential housing. An analysis by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization found a relatively low 7.5% of units there were vacation rentals as of February 2023.

Lahaina neighborhoods spared by the fire have a much higher ratio of vacation rentals: About half the housing in Napili, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) north of the burn zone, is short-term rentals.

Napili is where Chadwick thought she found a place to buy when she first went house hunting in 2016. But a Canadian woman secured it with a cash offer and turned it into a vacation rental.

Also outside the burn zone are dozens of short-term rental condominium buildings erected decades ago on land zoned for apartments.

In 1992, Maui County explicitly allowed owners in these buildings to rent units for less than 180 days at a time even without short-term rental permits. Since November, activists have occupied the beach in front of Lahaina’s biggest hotels to push the mayor or governor to use their emergency powers to revoke this exemption.

Money is a powerful incentive for owners to rent to travelers: a 2016 report prepared for the state found a Honolulu vacation rental generates 3.5 times the revenue of a long-term rental.

State Rep. Luke Evslin, the Housing Committee chair, said Maui and Kauai counties have suffered net losses of residential housing in recent years thanks to a paucity of new construction and the conversion of so many homes to short-term rentals.

“Every alarm bell we have should be ringing when we’re literally going backwards in our goal to provide more housing in Hawaii,” he said.

In his own Kauai district, Evslin sees people leaving, becoming homeless or working three jobs to stay afloat.

The Democrat was one of 47 House members who co-sponsored one version of legislation that would allow short-term rentals to be phased out. One objective is to give counties more power after a U.S. judge in 2022 ruled Honolulu violated state law when it attempted to prohibit rentals for less than 90 days. Evslin said that decision left Hawaii’s counties with limited tools, such as property taxes, to control vacation rentals.

Lawmakers also considered trying to boost Hawaii’s housing supply by forcing counties to allow more houses to be built on individual lots. But they watered down the measure after local officials said they were already exploring the idea.

Short-term rental owners said a phase-out would violate their property rights and take their property without compensation, potentially pushing them into foreclosure. Some predicted legal challenges.

Alicia Humiston, president of the Rentals by Owner Awareness Association, said some areas in West Maui were designed for travelers and therefore lack schools and other infrastructure families need.

“This area in West Maui that is sort of like this resort apartment zone — that’s all north of Lahaina — it was never built to be local living,” Humiston said.

One housing advocate argues that just because a community allowed vacation rentals decades ago doesn’t mean it still needs to now.

“We are not living in the 1990s or in the 1970s,” said Sterling Higa, executive director of Housing Hawaii’s Future. Counties “should have the authority to look at existing laws and reform them as necessary to provide for the public good.”

Courtney Lazo, a real estate agent who is part of Lahaina Strong, the group occupying Kaanapali Beach, said tourists can stay in her hometown now but many locals can’t.

“How do you expect a community to recover and heal and move forward when the people who make Lahaina, Lahaina, aren’t even there anymore?” she said at a recent news conference as her voice quivered. “They’re moving away.”

Seeing Southcentral Alaska by river, lake and sea

For many people, being near or out on water is at once deeply soothing and thrilling. If that’s true for you, Southcentral Alaska has world-class water adventure opportunities for every ability level.

Up close with the glaciers

Picture an ice slab the size of a house cleaving in slow motion from a massive blue and white glacier, sending up sparkling spray as it slips into the water beneath. You’re witnessing this in real time from a boat, at a safe distance but still close enough to hear.

While seeing a glacial calving event isn’t guaranteed, getting a firsthand look at a glacier is reliably awesome. Bonus: You don’t need a perfect sunny day to get the best views. The beautiful glacial blues are actually more prominent when it’s overcast.

Several outfits offer boat tours less than a day’s drive from Anchorage.

If you’re based in Anchorage and have limited time, check out the Mv Ptarmigan to Portage Glacier. Only an hour’s drive from Anchorage, you’ll spend about an hour on Portage Lake cruising right up to the face of the ice. Tickets run $49 per adult and $29 per child.

For those with more time, the 26 Glacier Tour run by Phillips Cruises & Tours says it all in the name. The nearly six-hour, narrated cruise covers 150 miles of Prince William Sound, and includes breathtaking views across College Fjord and Blackstone Bay. Tickets are $189 per adult, $125 per child, and include a meal.

Wildlife viewing

Alaska isn’t just about pretty, old ice: You’re here to see the incredibly diverse and often charismatic wildlife! Whales, sea otters, puffins and Steller sea lions abound. Many day cruise operators focus on wildlife viewing (and you’ll likely get some glaciers in there too).

Major Marine Tours , based in Seward, cruises to Kenai Fjords National Park, where the whale-watching is world class — but then, like so much in Alaska, so is the rest. Running from $109 for an adult/$54 per child for an early spring tour, to an 8.5-hour cruise at $289 per adult, there’s an array of day tours to choose from, including private charters.

Also based in Seward, Kenai Fjords Tours ventures into Resurrection Bay and beyond, offering options for different interests and food on every tour. Choose between a wildlife vs. glacier emphasis, or calmer water tours for those with concerns. Pricing ranges from $50 per person in the early season to $238 for a full day tour.

Want to get really close to the action? Little compares to paddling at eye-level in calm blue saltwater near a wild and forested shore, watching shorebirds wheel overhead, spotting eagles on their perch, and seeing otters floating on their backs nearby. Homer provides a stunning starting point for outfitters such as True North Kayak Adventures , which runs kayak trips in gorgeous Kachemak Bay in the $150-per-person range.

Finally, while you’re out on the water, why not catch some dinner? There are myriad salmon and halibut fishing charter options in both Seward and Homer, and easy pack/flash freeze/ship outfitters back on land to get your catch conveniently and safely processed. Check out Alaska Northern Outfitters in Seward and Homer Charter Fishing in Homer as starting points. Trips run roughly $400 per person.

River rafting

Your view of Alaska is going to change the closer you are to the water. Guided rafting trips provide a family-friendly experience with more of an adventurous edge than cruises, yet still appropriate for a wide range of mobility levels.

If you choose a guided rafting tour on the fabled Kenai Peninsula, you’ll experience an otherworldly green-blue river moving your raft along surprisingly swiftly as you scan the shoreline for bears feeding on fish. This region is teeming with life. One outfitter is Alaska River Adventures , offering half- and full-day float trips beginning at $64 per adult and $29.50 for kids.

For those looking for adventure, NOVA tours based in the Matanuska Valley offer a glimpse of a more rugged, exposed, grand Alaska that makes you feel like you truly are as far north as you traveled. The light hits differently up there across an expanse of glacially fed river and jagged mountain peaks. Their Matanuska River overnight tour is customizable for different experience levels, and starts at $550 per adult and $350 per child.

Up for a spicier ride? Try a guided trip with Chugach Outdoor Center or NOVA to Sixmile Creek, near Hope. This fabled local whitewater destination is considered intermediate to advanced and not for the faint of heart (or for those who can’t swim). Choose between a Class IV, two-canyon itinerary, or three canyons including IV and V rapids, $139-$215.

Another option for experienced and intrepid explorers is the versatile and increasingly popular packrafting. For the uninitiated, packrafts are highly portable personal inflatables designed to compress into a backpack, enabling you to flex your backpacking skills while accessing more remote, wild water. You get to hike in and paddle out! Alaska Packraft School guides an overnight packraft trip through fabled Crow Pass, which includes 15 miles of hiking and 8 miles of rafting on Eagle River, for $600.

Lakes of the Great Land

Alaska has over 3 million lakes, and some beautiful ones are only a stone’s throw from Anchorage.

Eklutna Lake sits 12 winding road miles away from the Glenn Highway. It’s tucked back into the Chugach Mountains but, at 7 miles long, is the largest lake in the region. On a clear day, it glows an ethereal blue-green. Lifetime Adventures at the lake’s edge provides day-rental kayaks starting at $50 per rental.

Craving even more adventure and an “only in Alaska” experience? Hardy travelers can try paddleboarding on an icy blue glacial lake at Knik Glacier with Alaska Sundog Guiding , for $999 per person.

The options for witnessing Southcentral Alaska from its many waterways are as numerous as there are bodies of water. You could spend a lifetime trying to see every one. Instead, why not pick one or two out of the best the region has to offer, and enjoy yourself fully while you’re there? It’s as sure of a bet you can make on creating an unforgettable life experience.
