The Eagles Long Goodbye: See the setlist for the legendary rock band's final tour

hotel california tour song list

It will be a long goodbye for the Eagles, who announced their final tour in July and vow to stay on the road through 2025 - or until they hit every market that might welcome them, sometimes more than once.

The Rock & Roll Hall of Famers kicked off their farewell at New York's Madison Square Garden Sept. 7 with a 23-song setlist that spotlights their myriad hits – "Take it Easy," "Witchy Woman," "Tequila Sunrise," "Life in the Fast Lane" and of course, "Hotel California" among them – and also paid tribute to "dear friend" Jimmy Buffett, who died Sept. 1 , and original Eagles bassist Randy Meisner, who died in July.

As on past tours, the core of Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh are joined by upper-register maestro Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, son of the late Eagles legend Glenn Frey. The additional four musicians backing the Eagles augment an already pristine sound for this two-hour hits parade.

Here is a look at the songs being performed on the Eagles' Long Goodbye tour.

Review: ‘Hotel California’ and more from Eagles at Wells Fargo Center

Three hours of the band's 1976 album, plus greatest hits, with Vince Gill taking the place of the late Glenn Frey.

The Eagles perform in the Hotel California 2022 Tour at the Wells Fargo Center in South Philadelphia on Monday, March 28, 2022.

E-A-G-L-E-S
 Eagles!

No, not those Eagles. The Eagles that took flight at the sports complex in South Philadelphia on Monday night were the 1970s Southern California rock band Eagles — the group originally led by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. They are the only act in pop music history to count two of their albums on the list of the 10 best sellers of all time.

One of those is Hotel California , the 1976 release about decadence and burnout and the American dream coming to a dead end in the nation’s bicentennial year in cocaine-fueled life-in-the-fast-lane Los Angeles.

That’s the one with the 6 1/2-minute title song with “warm smell of colitas rising up in the air” and an epic guitar coda that’s been a de rigueur aspiration for countless cover bands for nearly a half century.

Not to mention the Henley-sung final line that should have served as a warning to the band and every other showbiz lifer pretending to step off the stage once and for all: “You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.”

Thus it was Hotel California that had brought Eagles back to life and found the band at an all-but-sold-out Wells Fargo Center on Monday. There they played the album in order in its entirety, followed by nearly two hours of greatest hits, including every cut on Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) , the one even-bigger selling Eagles album.

So at this late date — 42 years after they first called it quits — who are the Eagles?

At the Wells Fargo, the core group was drummer and singer Henley, guitarist Joe Walsh, and longtime bassist Timothy B. Schmit, plus Vince Gill, the country singer-guitarist who’s taken Frey’s position at stage right and is a most welcome addition.

Introduced by Henley as “one of America’s finest singer-songwriters,” Gill took his first star with honeyed tenor voice on “New Kid in Town.”

That was apt since, at 64, he’s approximately a decade younger than the other principals in the band. He sparkled vocally on that Hotel cut, as he did later in the evening on “Take It Easy” and “Take It To the Limit.” And when called upon, Gill showed what an underrated guitar player he is, as he did on the 1970 James Gang hit “Funk #49” in which he squared off with Walsh, who added silliness and slide guitar firepower throughout the evening.

In addition to Gill, the band on Monday was also joined by auxiliary players, including Steuart Smith, their longtime touring guitarist who replaced Don Felder in 2001, and who teamed with Walsh on the aforementioned Hotel California coda.

On select songs, the band was joined by even more musicians. For Hotel’s “Wasted Time” and its instrumental reprise, three dozen string players, whom Henley called “the Northeast Corridor Orchestra,” appeared.

(If you added up all the masks on the back of the stage, it might have totaled more than those worn by all audience members.)

And on Hotel’s elegiac “The Last Resort,” the band and orchestra members were joined by the yellow-robed, 21-member University of the Arts Chorus, which helped give the album closer its aimed-for air of broken dream significance.

For a band with so many millions of fans whose songs’ chief characteristic is their pleasantness, Eagles have never had a shortage of detractors. For some it’s the music’s peaceful, easy, anodyne quality.

For me, it’s that combined with the casual misogyny that courses through their catalog, particularly the greatest-hits portion. So many witchy women who can’t hide their “Lyin’ Eyes,” and wounded male narrators who know all too well “what a woman will do to your soul.”

If there are seven women on the mind of an Eagle — as in “Take It Easy,” written by Frey and Jackson Browne — he counts himself lucky if one wants to be his friend.

Of course, all of those songs are expertly crafted and forever memorable, and for rock fans of a certain age, likely to be burned in your brain, even if you haven’t played an Eagles album in decades.

On Monday, they were performed with verve and precision in a first-class production that only occasionally dragged. Harmonies were sharp and highlights abounded, whether it was a stomping “Heartache Tonight,” with Gill taking the lead, or Walsh’s discordant “Rocky Mountain Way,” or Schmit’s delicate “I Can’t Tell You Why,” a yacht rock masterpiece unlike any of the band’s other signature songs.

Early in the evening, Henley, whose always slightly raspy vocals were strong and expressive all night long, said that the band hoped to bring the audience “a three-hour vacation from all the chaos and discord going on out there.” By those standards, even Eagles haters would have to admit the Hotel California tour succeeded.

The Story Behind Every Song on Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’

The Eagles ' breeziness belies their darkness; their accessibility obscures their depth. And there's no clearer example than the band's sixth LP, Hotel California , a deceptively multi-layered masterpiece that bundles cinematic rock, sleek balladry and subtle surrealism into one multi-platinum package.

Yes, the album spawned three polished singles -- "Hotel California," "Life in the Fast Lane" and "New Kid in Town" -- that have occupied radio real estate over the past four-plus decades. But these nine tracks grasped a grandeur, both sonically and lyrically, that their early forays into country-rock never foreshadowed.

"I've learned over the years that one word, 'California,' carries with it all kinds of connotations, powerful imagery, mystique, etc., that fires the imaginations of people in all corners of the globe," singer and drummer Don Henley told  Rolling Stone  in 2016. "There's a built-in mythology that comes with that word, an American cultural mythology that has been created by both the film and the music industry."

Hotel California  has become an essential part of that mythology since its release in 1976. And it's fascinating to glance back at how this cultural lightning strike originated from a perfect storm of personnel (swapping out country-minded guitarist Bernie Leadon with blues-rock maven Joe Walsh ), technology (the luxurious mid-'70s production, captured in part at Los Angeles' famed Record Plant Studios) and timing (following a steady stream of early hits, up through their 1975 greatest hits compilation, still one of the highest-selling albums ever ).

Teaming again with producer Bill Szymczyk, who helmed its two previous albums, the band split time between the Record Plant and Miami's Criteria Studios -- adhering to its usual level of decadence along the way. ("Before we could even start recording, we had to scrape all the cocaine out of the mixing board," recalled Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath , who were conjuring a much heavier atmosphere at Criteria. "I think they’d left about a pound of cocaine in the board.")

Despite the distractions, the quintet (Henley, Walsh, guitarists Glenn Frey and Don Felder  and bassist Randy Meisner) wound up reaching a pinnacle, both commercially and creatively: Pieces like the epic title track revealed a more artful side to their collaborative songwriting, and sales continued to swell (eventually carving out another slot on the all-time Top 5 ).

In the years since, Hotel California has remained Eagles' signature work. Decades later, the band is still mining the work and  playing the album in its entirety . We tell the Story Behind Every Song on Eagles' 'Hotel California' below.

"Hotel California"

The centerpiece of both the album and the band's entire catalog, Hotel California 's title track   is six-and-a-half minutes of interwoven guitar riffs, stacked vocal harmonies and mysterious, macabre imagery. The song -- which won a Record of the Year Grammy in 1978 -- dates back to Felder's instrumental four-track demo, an intriguing 12-string jangle fleshed out with bass and drum machine. And Henley and Frey knew the song had potential to develop from that quirky first draft into something more majestic.

"Felder had submitted a cassette tape containing about half a dozen different pieces of music," Henley told Rolling Stone . "None of them moved me until I got to that one. It was a simple demo – a progression of arpeggiated guitar chords, along with some hornlike sustained note lines, all over a simple 4/4 drum-machine pattern. There may have been some Latin-style percussion in there too. I think I was driving down Benedict Canyon Drive at night, or maybe even North Crescent Drive [adjacent to the Beverly Hills Hotel] the first time I heard the piece, and I remember thinking, "This has potential; I think we can make something interesting out of this."

Felder, Henley and Frey are all credited as writers on the finished track, which the band fleshed out with a reggae-styled guitar pulse, melodic bass, booming roto-tom fills and harmonized guitar leads. But Felder's home-recorded demo loomed large over the recording session -- almost to a fault.

“Joe and I started jamming, and Don said, ‘No, no, stop! It’s not right,'” Felder told MusicRadar in 2012. “I said, ‘What do you mean it’s not right?’ And he said, ‘No, no, you’ve got to play it just like the demo.’ Only problem was, I did that demo a year earlier; I couldn’t even remember what was on it. ... We had to call my housekeeper in Malibu, who took the cassette, put it in a blaster and played it with the phone held up to the blaster. ... It was close enough to the demo to make Don happy.”

Henley told  Rolling Stone  the song's oft-debated lyrics -- which feature a nod to Steely Dan ("steely knives") within its winding, symbolic journey through the titular hotel -- are his finest work in that arena. "I guess I'd have to say 'Hotel California,' although I feel it important to point out that Glenn contributed some very important lines to that set of lyrics," he said. "Those lyrics employ what Glenn used to call 'the perfect ambiguity,' and are open to a wide array of interpretations – and we've seen some doozies."

"New Kid in Town"

Eagles may have shouted out Steely Dan on "Hotel California," but they conjured a bit of that band's soulful style on the laid-back "New Kid in Town." With Walsh's smooth Fender Rhodes piano and the group's parallel vocal harmonies, the song wouldn't have sounded out of place on Can't Buy a Thrill . (Notably, the song won the 1978 Grammy for Best Vocal Arrangement for Two or More Voices.)

The chorus dates back to a fragment from Eagles friend and frequent co-writer J.D. Souther, who struggled to fully flesh out the idea on his own. But, in a testament to their strengths as collaborators, Frey and Henley joined him to finish off the track together -- unifying the melodies and lyrics into a suave, seamless whole.

Lyrically, the song revolves around a gunslinger analogy, with Henley meditating on the idea that his stadium-packing band would eventually be replaced by another flavor of the month. "It's about the fleeting, fickle nature of love and romance," he reflected in the liner notes of their 2003 compilation, The Very Best Of . "It's also about the fleeting nature of fame, especially in the music business. We were basically saying, 'Look, we know we're red-hot right now, but we also know that somebody's going to come along and replace us — both in music and in love."

"Life in the Fast Lane"

Drop the needle on "Life in the Fast Line" and close your eyes. What image do you see? Probably something similar to the story that inspired the title: a non-sober Frey rollicking down the freeway at a dangerous speed. "I was riding with a guy, and we were too buzzed for our own good," he told In the Studio With Redbeard . "And he was over in the left lane in the freeway going about 85 miles an hour, and I was kinda paralyzed in the seat next to him. I said, 'Slow down, man!' He said, 'What do you mean, man? We're in the fast lane!'"

Frey hung onto the phrase for months, conceptualizing with Henley a song about  "some Hollywood couple that has everything and takes it all to excess and destroys their lives." But they needed a riff to bring that tale of excess to life. Enter Walsh's signature coiling-snake guitar line.

"We were looking for input from me – Joe Walsh, rocker – that could be the foundation for an Eagles song," the guitarist told  Rolling Stone . " We had a couple false starts on stuff and hadn't really found anything. But one night I was in my dressing room getting ready for a show, and I had this one lick I'd play over and over as part of warming up. Because it's really a hard lick to play. And that's "Life in the Fast Lane." And Henley came in and said, "What the hell is that?" He went and got Glenn and I played it for them. They said, "Is that yours?" And I said, "Yeah." And they said, "Well, there's our Joe Walsh Eagles song!" Don and Glenn, but mostly Don, put the words together, and Glenn kind of arranged it. And there it was. So it's a Walsh/Henley/Frey tune, and I'm really proud of it."

"Wasted Time"

Eagles pulled out all the accoutrements for this lavish break-up ballad: piano, organ, strings, phased-out guitar licks, borderline-operatic vocal harmonies. For Frey, it was an homage to the lavish production of the Philadelphia soul scene of that era.

"I loved all the records coming out of Philadelphia at that time," he wrote in the liner notes to  The Very Best Of . "I sent for some sheet music so I could learn some of those songs, and I started creating my own musical ideas with that Philly influence. Don was our Teddy Pendergrass. He could stand out there all alone and just wail. We did a big Philly-type production with strings -- definitely not country rock. You're not going to find that track on a Crosby, Stills & Nash record or Beach Boys record. Don's singing abilities stretched so many of our boundaries. He could sing the phone book. It didn't matter."

Henley, the song's co-writer, aimed for a much more direct lyric than, say, the shadowy metaphors of "Hotel California." "Nothing inspires or catalyzes a great ballad like a failed relationship," he told  Rolling Stone . "Still, it's a very empathetic song, I think."

"Wasted Time (Reprise)"

This brief instrumental coda opened the original vinyl's second side with a flourish of symphonic sweetness. The string arrangement is credited to Jim Ed Norman, one of Henley's former college friends and the keyboardist in the singer's pre-Eagles band Shiloh. Norman, who eventually became president of Warner Bros. Records Nashville, even joined in on the band's Hotel California tour, conducting a 46-piece orchestra and 22-member choir onstage.

"Victim of Love"

On Hotel California , Eagles boasted five legitimate songwriters -- a breadth of attack reflected in the album's diversity. The original plan, said Felder, was to showcase each member behind the microphone, but that plan fell through during the recording of slinky blues-rocker "Victim of Love."

The guitarist recorded several attempts at a lead vocal, but none crossed the band's dauntingly high threshold. While Felder was out to dinner with band manager Irving Azoff, Henley stepped in and recorded his own take. "It was great," Felder told  UCR  of the drummer's vocal. "He was fantastic. But I was really upset because we were supposed to — everybody have a song on that record. … I was told that I was going to be able to sing that."

Resentment lingered beyond the session. “Don Felder, for all of his talents as a guitar player, was not a singer,” Frey bluntly noted in the band’s 2013 documentary,  The History of the Eagles . Henley added that Felder's vocals “simply did not come up to band standards."

"Pretty Maids All in a Row" Walsh's signature Hotel California moment may be the tricky lick on "Life in the Fast Line," but he shows a more vulnerable side on this slow, oceanic waltz. He crafted the track with singer-songwriter (and former Barnstorm bandmate) Joe Vitale, who wound up joining Eagles as a touring member.

"To make the Eagles really valid as a band, it was important that we co-write things and share things," Walsh recalled in 1983. "'Pretty Maids' is kind of a melancholy reflection on my life so far, and I think we tried to represent it as a statement that would be valid for people from our generation on life so far. Heroes, they come and go. ... Henley and Frey really thought that it was a good song, and meaningful, and helped me a lot in putting it together. I think the best thing to say is that it's a kind of melancholy observation on life that we hoped would be a valid statement for people from our generation."

"Try and Love Again"

Meisner guided the band back to country-rock with this swooning deep cut, belting over acoustic strums, melodic guitar harmonies and his own melancholy bass line. The song became his swan song in the band he co-founded: He quit the lineup in September 1977, following the Hotel California tour, after struggling with health problems and band tension.

"Try and Love Again" is rarely mentioned in the same breath as classics like "Hotel California" and "Life in the Fast Lane," but its twang and atmosphere add another color to the album's palette. And though it was performed only a handful of times in its day, the song enjoyed a renewed spotlight on the full-LP tour.

"The Last Resort"

Hotel California dims its neon lights with this maximalist protest anthem against man's endless thirst for empty conquest. Over seven-and-a-half minutes, Henley surveys an America squandering its resources and torching its core values -- a message informed by the band's reach into environmental and social issues. " We satisfy our endless needs and justify our bloody deeds ," he sings, " in the name of destiny and in the name of God. "

"The gist of the song was that when we find something good, we destroy it by our presence — by the very fact that man is the only animal on earth that is capable of destroying his environment," the singer told  Rolling Stone  in 1978. "The environment is the reason I got into politics: to try to do something about what I saw as the complete destruction of most of the resources that we have left. We have mortgaged our future for gain and greed."

Frey, who co-wrote the song, reflected years later that "The Last Resort" was Henley's attempt at an "epic."

"We were very much at that time concerned about the environment," he told In the Studio With Redbeard . "We were starting to do anti-nuclear benefits. It seemed to be the perfect way to conclude and wrap up all the different topics and things we'd explored on the Hotel California album. I think Don really found himself as a lyricist on that song — really kind of outdid himself."

Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist

The post Eagles Kick Off 2023 “Hotel California Tour” with a Few Surprises: Review, Photos, and Setlist appeared first on Consequence .

With over five decades of collective and individual achievements among them,  Eagles have reached rarified air. Nearly all the original members of the country-rock group that are on speaking terms with founding member Don Henley are still alive, still in remarkably good health, and somehow looking far younger than their actual ages. Their music still sells at a comfortable clip as well as popping up with regularity on classic rock radio and streaming playlists named “OK, Boomer.”

In 2023, the Eagles are now more an institution than a musical group. And like most artists of their vintage, seeing the group live becomes a matter of both excitement and trepidation. How well or poorly can these men replicate the songs of their youth?

The answer to that question: impressively well. On Sunday night at Portland Oregon’s Moda Center, as the band opened up their 2023 North American tour (get tickets here ), they hit nearly every mark and still managed to toss a few surprises into their three-hour set.

First, though, Eagles needed to deal with the business at hand. As this run of shows is dubbed the 2023 “Hotel California Tour,” the band got underway by playing their 1976 album in full. This included a corny bit of stagecraft with a wizened looking gent opening the night by traipsing slowly across stage with a copy of Hotel California under his arm before laying the LP on a turntable and dropping the needle. (The side flip was handled later by a buxom blonde in a suggestive black dress.)

From there, the Eagles — these days consisting primarily of Henley, bassist Timothy B. Schmit, guitarist Joe Walsh, and fantasy camp lottery winner Vince Gill — steadily knocked out each song on the record in order, with every moment recreated with care and accuracy. That meant pulling in members of the Oregon Symphony and a choir from the University of Portland to augment the lusher moments of “Wasted Time,” “Pretty Maids All in a Row,” and “Last Resort.” The album’s status as an all-timer is secure.

After a short break, the band returned to play, as Henley put it, “everything we know.” It was in the second set that the pleasant surprises and light stumbles came into play. The biggest moment of the night came when Henley introduced guest Deacon Frey to the stage.

The son of the late Eagles co-founder Glenn Frey, he was brought into the fold following the death of his father in 2016 but last year announced his departure from the group in order to, according to the press release, “forge his own path.” Yet, here he was again, lending his youthful glow to a few songs — “Already Gone” and “Take It Easy,” among them — once sung by his dad. It gave a welcome lift to an already elevated arena show.

Then there was Joe Walsh. The 75-year-old’s pact with Satan, which has helped him survive all manner of chemical dependencies and much personal turmoil, seems very much in place. His face was still an amoebic mass, warping and distending in response to his aqueous guitar solos and his own vocals, but what came out of it was lucid and strong. Walsh took an impressive amount of the spotlight, knocking out his Hotel California song, “In the City,” and a trio of tunes from his life outside Eagles with a supremely joyful countenance. If, at times, it looked like he was pulling it all out from deep within his core as he sang “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way,” his performance never diminished.

Only Schmit revealed the effects of aging on his voice. His previously angelic tones on “I Can’t Tell You Why” sounded far more earthbound but no less pleasant to hear. Henley, too, has lost a little bit of the punch in his drumming, something that became apparent when the band’s touring percussionist took over the kit.

The show itself was remarkable enough, but what came out of the evening was a sense of how dedicated the remaining Eagles are to one another and to the people in their employ. As Henley noted when introducing the members of the Oregon Symphony, the white-haired gentleman leading those players was Jim Ed Norman, an arranger and producer who had worked on most of the band’s studio albums. Seated next to this writer in the arena was the son of Henley’s personal assistant, who told me that his dad had been working with the artists for the better part of 50 years. The band’s tour manager has been with them since the beginning. It seems that if you can stick it out with the Eagles, you’re in for life.

That was certainly the case for their many fans who swarmed the arena. For many, they’ve been listening to and loving the Eagles for their entire lives. Their dedication to the group is strong and unyielding. Neither the small hiccups in the show nor the recap of an exhausted writer will ever change that. Maybe nothing more need be said about the band other than a fervent hope that they may continue to tap into that peaceful, easy feeling for as long as they are able.

The Eagles had previously announced dates overseas, beginning in the Netherlands on June 17 and wrapping in London’s New Hyde Park on June 26, 2022. The band will be joined by an opening act (so to speak) of Hall of Famer Robert Plant and Alison Krauss on the June 26 gig in London.

The  Hotel California  tour came about after the Eagles performed three sold-out  Hotel California  gigs in Las Vegas last year. The show features a full-album performance of the supergroup’s 1976 classic, with the Eagles playing alongside an orchestra and a choir, as well as a second set of the band’s greatest hits.

The Eagles, who are known as one of the best selling bands of all time, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018. The band, which released its self-titled debut album in 1972, is sure to have many fans staying at the proverbial hotel. Check out the live concert footage below.

The Eagles take Nashville to 'Hotel California' with a marathon rock concert

hotel california tour song list

A note wasn't played Thursday night inside Bridgestone Arena until the album began spinning — literally.

Before one cymbal splash or the strum of a guitar, a silent, stoic figure wearing head-to-toe black stepped on stage in downtown Nashville and pulled out an LP from under his arm. Holding up an album sleeve sun-soaked artwork accented by blue neon words, he slipped out a vinyl record to roaring applause. He laid the album on a turntable situated to one side of the stage and dropped the needle.

A few spins after completing this nostalgic ritual and The Eagles appeared from behind a curtain to play the opening notes to the band's ultimate contribution to rock music canon: "Hotel California."

As if the grooves on the 45-year-old album popped to life inside Bridgestone Arena, the band — featuring longtime members Don Henley, Timothy B. Schmit, Joe Walsh and adopted country great Vince Gill — proceeded to perform "Hotel California" in its entirety.

And at a three-hour runtime, the nine-song "Hotel California" performance proved only one part of a show that took audiences through a steamrolling set of Eagles, Walsh and Henley hits penned before and after the 1975 album.

"Glad to be back here in Nash-Vegas," Henley said with a small smile. "Our mission this evening is to give you about a three-hour vacation from all the chaos and turmoil that's going on in the world."

A Nashville stay at 'Hotel California'

If Thursday night was about checking into "Hotel California," then Nashville deserves a corner suite.

Under a glowing blue sign that spelled the album's title, Nashville artists took center stage during the "Hotel" performance. The Eagles enlisted Fisk Jubilee Singers for a rousing rendition of album closer "The Last Resort," and alongside Country Music Hall of Fame band member Gill, Music Row conductor Jim Ed Norman joined the band on stage to lead a live orchestra during album string arrangements.

And hearing "Hotel California" in-full on stage — including layers added by the orchestra and choir — proved a theatrical, reinvigorating way to revisit a collection of rock songs shared by generations of fans.

Local love for Vince Gill

After checking out of the album set (pun intended), the band traded vinyl spins for a preverbal mixtape spanning the country-rock days pre-dating "Hotel California" and the smooth rock that followed.

Gill sang many of the hits previously carried by band co-founder Glenn Frey, who died in 2016. Beginning in 2017, Gill and Frey's son Deacon Frey took up live duties for the late member until earlier this year, when the second generation Eagles member exited the band.

Thursday night in Nashville, the Grand Ole Opry member led a handful of fan-favorite singalongs, from "Take It Easy" to "Heartache Tonight" and "Take It To The Limit."

"We're delighted to have your hometown man up here with us this evening," Henley said, introducing Gill to an extended ovation that left the latter bowing multiple times in appreciation. "It's a real treat for us to have him in the band and [to] make music with Vince. One of America's finest."

The hits roll on

After wrapping "Hotel California," Henley said he and the band would return to "play everything else we know" — and he made  pretty  good on that promise.

The Eagles didn't cut corners on what fans expect from a night with the long-running arena outfit. Walsh ripped up takes on "Life's Been Good," his ode to goofy self-awareness, and "Funk #49," the crowd-pleasing James Gang cut that pre-dates The Eagles. Schmit offered his soft-rock staple "I Can't Tell You Why" and Henley kept the audience singing with "Witchy Woman," "One Of These Nights" and "Desperado," to name a few.

The set ended with a four-song encore, including one more trip to Walsh's catalog — "Rocky Mountain Way" — and Henley's foremost solo song, "Boys Of Summer."

Closing with "The Best Of My Love," the band didn't put the needle down on its last song before dedicating the rendition to Glenn Frey and Taylor Hawkins, the late Foo Fighters drummer and friend of band, Henley said.

"In three or four days, this band marks its 50th anniversary," Henley said. "'Take It Easy' was released on May 1, 1972. It's been a hell of a ride and we appreciate you sticking with us."

The Eagles "Hotel California" tour continues Friday night at Bridgestone Arena.

Eagles Hotel California live 2022

Welcome to the Hotel California.

Last night, legendary rockers the Eagles took the stage at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. The performance was part of their on-going Hotel California Tour, a trek celebrating their seminal smash-hit album. The band played an incredible 3-hour set that included essentially everything an Eagles fan can dream of.

As the arena went dark, a blue neon sign emblazoned with “Hotel California” from the iconic album cover slowly descended from the rafters. Then, a hotel bellhop slowly sauntered across the stage and held up a vinyl of the masterpiece for which the tour is named. He took out the record, blew the dust off, and when the needle dropped – the curtain rose.

While it may have been subtle, the additional theatrics really set the tone for the show that was about to come.

The capacity crowd immediately got on their feet as the first few notes of Hotel California ‘s title track rolled off of guitarist Joe Walsh’s fingertips. The energy in the arena was palpable. The fans knew they were in for a night in the fast lane.

They rolled through their seminal LP front to back, treating fans to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. A full orchestra and choir accompanied the band, which helped realize the album’s complete potential in a live setting. The crowd was on their feet for the entire opening number “Hotel California,” and rightfully so. Vince Gill took over vocal duties for the GRAMMYÂź Award-winning single “New Kid In Town.”

Then, Don Henley stepped out from behind the drum kit as Joe Walsh ripped into the opening riff of the rocker “Live In The Fast Lane. The crowd jumped up out of their chairs and sang along with Henley to one of rock music’s biggest anthems. It was a highlight of the show, for sure, and the Eagles had barely started their engine.

Noteworthy moments from the album play-through included “Wasted Time” with the North East Corridor Orchestra for the Reprise, the foot-stomping rocker “Victim of Love,” and more. The final track of the set saw the band join forces with the orchestra once again plus the University of the Arts Chorus. It made for perhaps the fullest version of the song that fans had ever heard.

The set was the kind of celebration an album of this caliber deserves.

After a short break, the Eagles returned to the stage for Act II. The kicked things off with “Seven Bridges Road.” The proceeded to roll through a greatest hits set, dropping one fan favorite after the other. The even extended themselves beyond the Eagles discography. They performed Joe Walsh’s “In The City” and “Life’s Been Good,” plus a cover of the James Gang’s “Funk #49” (of which Walsh was a member).

Other highlights included “Take It Easy,” “One of These Nights,” “Tequila Sunrise,” “Witchy Woman,” “Lyin’ Eyes, “Heartache Tonight,” and many more.

Although they were already 23 tracks in, the Eagles returned to the stage for a four-song encore. They began the end with another Joe Walsh hit “Rocky Mountain Way.” The elegant “Desperado” followed, then Don Henley’s nostalgic solo hit “The Boys of Summer.” They gently closed out the unforgettable evening with “Best of my Love.”

Holy smokes, what a show.
