city tours big bus

All about city tours in Abu Dhabi

City tours in Abu Dhabi allow you to experience this glittering city from all angles.

Between the skyscrapers lie immaculate palace lawns, adventure islands and natural refuges, such as Mangrove National Park. A city tour of Abu Dhabi places all the highlights of this diverse city and the great outdoors within reach.

There are several travel and tours agency providers in Abu Dhabi – Big Bus Tours has two routes, which can be enjoyed from a refreshingly breezy open-air bus.

Other excursions combine cultural attractions such as Heritage Village with Yas Island theme parks, while boat tours glide between landmarks on the glittering Arabian Gulf.

Abu Dhabi tour rides make seeing all the best parts of the city simple, so all you need to worry about is making unforgettable memories.

people on a bus tour

The best city tours in Abu Dhabi

See many of the most important landmarks on the Abu Dhabi city tour by bus – it’s a hop-on, hop-off experience which transports you between key attractions and neighbourhoods.

There are two routes. The red route focuses on urban attractions such as Corniche Beach, Marina Mall and Qasr al Hosn. The Presidential Palace and Emirates Palace can also be admired on this route.

The green route, meanwhile, begins at Abu Dhabi Mall and takes a wider tour of the Abu Dhabi region, with the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque taking star position.

The green route stops on Yas Island, where a range of exciting family attractions lie, including Yas Waterworld, Yas Marina Circuit and Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

On this route, the Abu Dhabi tour bus also stops at Eastern Mangroves, on the cusp of the luscious natural landscapes of Mangrove National Park.

city tours big bus

This Abu Dhabi tour is a planned excursion lasting for a full day, which can be booked with Etihad.

The first stop is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, which is a majestic place of worship and magnificently marble clad. Inside, you can expect to see intricate works of Islamic craftmanship.

Next up is Heritage Village, where traditional Bedouin life is revived via a reconstructed desert village complete with craft workshops. From here, it’s on to Saadiyat Island – where you’ll find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, an architectural wonder and home to impressive artefacts from across the globe.

This Abu Dhabi city tour package also comes with entry to one of Yas Island’s most popular attractions – Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi.

Here, you’ll get to experience the thrills of the famous Formula Rossa, one of the world's fastest rollercoasters.

sheikh zayed grand mosque

Tour the city from the water with the Yellow Boats tour – to get spectacular views of Abu Dhabi’s most iconic buildings. In a coastal city whose history is entwined with the Arabian Gulf, travelling upon the waves on a guided tour just makes sense.

There are several Abu Dhabi city tour options with the Yellow Boats, which can be experienced in less than half a day in the morning, afternoon or evening.

The Corniche Tour takes just one hour, brushing the iconic coast and sweeping past Heritage Village towards man-made Lulu Island.

The Yas Tour provides plenty of facts about Abu Dhabi’s most action-packed area, and you’ll see Yas Marina and Yas Marina Circuit, home to the Formula 1™ Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

During your tour, look out for marine life, which is abundant near the mangroves.

yellow boat tours

City tours in Abu Dhabi

An Abu Dhabi city tour is an enriching journey – there are several types, each presenting a unique itinerary and travel style. Here’s how to experience three of the best.

Getting to Abu Dhabi Mall

The red and green routes of Big Bus Tours intersect at Abu Dhabi Mall, so it’s a great place to hop on. You’ll find it just off Al Maiyani Street, a 12-minute drive from Corniche Beach.

Getting to Emirates Palace Marina

The Abu Dhabi Yellow Boats tour takes off from Emirates Palace Marina. This is located near the UAE Presidential Palace and Qasr al Watan.

Getting to Etihad’s tours

Etihad’s Modern Abu Dhabi City Tour, which comes with access to Ferrari World™ Abu Dhabi, offers pickup from any location in central Abu Dhabi – airport or hotel pick-up can be requested when you book a tour.

Things to know before you go

Allow plenty of time for big attractions.

If you’re using a hop-on city tour to acquaint yourself with big attractions such as the Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi, then be sure to plan enough time for each segment of your day.

Allow two hours each for both the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi, which are both full of things to do. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the UAE’s largest mosque, with a main prayer hall that can accommodate 7,000 worshippers and plenty of smaller rooms to marvel at, too.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi has 23 permanent galleries to discover. Leave yourself with plenty of time to get the most from the Arabian peninsula’s largest art museum.

tours in abu dhabi

Prepare for warm weather

Abu Dhabi city tours are always warm, no matter what time of year you visit so it’s important to be well prepared. Pack plenty of water, sun cream and a hat for shelter from the sun, especially if your tour is via boat or open-top bus.

Long and lightweight clothing can help you to keep you cool – however, since many attractions are air-conditioned, it is also a good idea to carry a warmer layer, too.

City Tours: FAQs

Abu Dhabi is an international city where English and Arabic are the most-used languages, but it’s also possible to find guided tours in languages such as Japanese.

A day of Abu Dhabi tour delights

lourve abu dhabi

Start bright and early

Hop on the Big Bus tour at Abu Dhabi Mall. Watch the morning sun rise above the Corniche, then exit at Heritage Village for an introduction to Emirati culture.

Return to the mall to change onto the green line towards Louvre Abu Dhabi. Get there just before 10am for a great spot in line and explore until around midday.

Artistically enriched, board again to reach Yas Island for lunchtime. In Yas Mall and on the marina, you’ll find restaurants offering different international cuisines for a spot of lunch.

An exciting afternoon

Select one theme park and expect to stay until mid-afternoon – although some attractions, such as Yas Waterworld, could easily be enjoyed all day. It’s possible to purchase Yas Island tickets through Etihad for multiple parks and days.

Return to the bus to head towards the marvellous Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Arrive at around 4pm for cooler temperatures and expect to stay for an hour or two. On the final leg of your tour, watch the sun set over Mangrove National Park.

Explore Dubai & Abu Dhabi 4 Nights 5 Days

Fabulous tour exploring all the highlights of Dubai. We started with a tour of the Burj Khalifa the Worlds tallest building, unbelievable views from the top. We also had a very nice tour of Abu Dhabi which is famous for their delicious dates and sparkling blue waters of the Persian Gulf. We were also treated to a stunning cruise on Dubai Creek with its fantastic buffet and out of this world views. Very talented entertainment was also included. The grand finale of our tour was the Desert Safari with a tasty barbecue and thrilling entertainment including a fire breathing dancer. I just cannot express how grand this tour was. Thank You

Dubai Luxury Holidays Package 6 Night 7 Days Tour

Dubai Luxury Holidays Package 6 Night 7 Days

Stars of Dubai - 6 days

All of the tour guides were excellent and very knowledgeable. My only issues were that we paid for a 5 star hotel and we got a 4 star hotel. I let a representative know about this hotel discrepancy and nothing was done or corrected. It was never addressed. Also, we were not informed that we would not be seeing certain listed sites until I asked why we didn't see them. I was then told they were closed due to Covid. Those sites are still listed in the online brochure and thus included in the price.

What people love about abu dhabi tours.

Sehr viel gesehen, sehr gute Organisation, gutes Essen, ausgezeichneter Reiseleiter, insgesamt sehr zufriedenstellend.
Tour bus audio system wasn't working properly so couldn't hear what tour guide was talking about.

United Arab Emirates is surely a part of any traveler's bucket list, mesmerizing the world with its skyscrapers, expensive hotels, fancy malls, and an incredible coastline. UAE is an outstanding architectural gallery, home to some of the world's top resorts and hotels. Experience the best of the UAE on your luxury trip, from the stunning Palm Islands to the captivating Sir Bani Yas.

This multicultural city, Abu Dhabi, offers something for everyone, regardless of age or interest, from searing deserts to serene nature, exquisite architecture, Islamic cultural magnificence, and year-round sunlight. There are always intriguing, captivating, and amusing things to do in Abu Dhabi.

Dubai, which arose from the Arabian desert, is a city full of ambition, with mega malls, the world's tallest buildings, and the world's largest artificial islands! Dubai's summers may be extremely hot, therefore the best time to visit is between November and January to enjoy the beautiful skies and picture-perfect beach weather.

Liwa is a thrilling place with a variety of interesting and breathtaking activities. Liwa has something to offer everyone, whether you've visited before or are here for the first time. The Liwa Oasis is a collection of oasis or settlements in the United Arab Emirates. Liwa is home to a collection of Bedouin villages scattered across the oasis on the Rub Al Khali's northern outskirts. You can either visit Liwa on weekends or arrange an extended vacation there.

Al Ain, which means 'the spring' in Arabic, has a long history of providing relief from the desert heat to tired camel trekkers in the form of fresh water and shade under luxuriant palm trees. Both expatriates and locals will find Al Ain to be a relatively safe and secure city, but caution should be given when following local customs. The United Arab Emirates are conservative, but while Dubai and Abu Dhabi have become more westernized in recent years, Al Ain has remained conservative.

We honestly had a FANTASTIC time. my husband and I had a long layover in Abu Dhabi to celebrate our anniversary so we decided to add this to our list of activities. Had an amazing time on the Evening Desert Safari. Dune bashing was so much fun - lots of screams and laughs. Sunset was breathtaking, and the campsite was lively with camel rides and delicious food. Stargazing was magical. Guides were friendly and made everything safe. Must-do experience!

How to Pick the Best Abu Dhabi Tour from Dubai (+Our Experience)

Thinking of visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai for a day and wondering which tour to choose? We had the exact same question on our recent trip – what is the best Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai?

After several hours of research, comparing dozens of itineraries, and reading hundreds of reviews, I can tell you that the choice is overwhelming. There are hundreds of Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai, with widely varying itineraries. You have to read in detail which places you actually visit and which are not more than a quick photo stop. Furthermore, often they also list the sights which you only pass by…

You’ll find private tours and (small) group tours, full-day tours, or those that only take a couple of hours… There is one thing in common – pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. But the rest of the itinerary can vary from short stops at some local low-key markets to thorough visits to some of the most impressive landmarks…

In this article, we share our hand-picked selection of Abu Dhabi tours that we shortlisted for our own trip , as well as a detailed description of the tour we ultimately chose. I hope that this guide will save you time and help you choose the best tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and have a truly unforgettable experience.

TIP: If you don’t want to read the entire article and simply want to see the best of Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai, we recommend this highly-rated tour . It’s the tour that we chose and it was perfect. It brings you to the three main landmarks in Abu Dhabi – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan – and you actually get to visit each of these places and not just pass by or see from a distance, as with many other tours.

Best guided tours to Abu Dhabi from Dubai - helpful info and tips based on personal experience and research

Why Visit & What to See on Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It’s also the richest of the seven Emirates, home to some of the most prestigious projects and remarkable architectural landmarks. So no trip to the UAE would be complete without at least a short introduction to this beautiful city!

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a quickly growing city with many new attractions, one more impressive than the other. So you have to understand that there is no way to see all the best places in Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai. There are simply too many options and you would need several days in Abu Dhabi if you want to see all the top sights.

So when looking for a day tour to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you have to decide which of the top sights and attractions you absolutely do not want to miss. Once you make the choice, it becomes easier to pick the right tour that fits your interests.

Here are some of the TOP attractions in Abu Dhabi:

  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi, included in pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours.
  • Qasr Al Watan – UAE Presidential Palace (sometimes also referred to as the Royal Palace) – an actual visit inside is only included with very few tours.
  • Etihad Towers . Many tours pass here, but only a few include a visit to the Observation Deck.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi – the largest museum in the Gulf region, among others, displaying artworks from The Louvre and other top museums in Paris . There are just a few tours that visit here.
  • Yas Island where you can find the following theme parks: Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros. World , and SeaWorld . This is not the best place to visit on a day trip since you could easily spend a day at each of these theme parks and still not see it all. So if tours from Dubai include Yas Island in their itinerary, at best, it’s a half-day visit to Ferrari World (most tours that mention Ferrari World, usually only stop for a picture at the parking in front of it).

Here are some additional sights sometimes included in some Abu Dhabi tours:

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche – a waterfront road with bike paths and a nice pedestrian promenade. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Founders Memorial – a monument. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Emirates Palace – this luxury hotel (full name – Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ) is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. Some tours include a visit, but most just drive by.

Good to know: The best Abu Dhabi day tours include a visit to 2-3 of the ‘TOP attractions’. Depending on the tour and how much time you spend at the main landmarks, they sometimes include one or two short stops at some of the ‘additional sights’ listed above.

However, some tours only seem to offer great value at first sight. When you look deeper, you realize that the majority of your time will be spent in the car or with short stops at ‘cultural’ attractions, such as a vegetable and dates market, Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, or local art galleries. While this could be a nice addition to the main sights, there are so many better things to do with just a day in Abu Dhabi than spend your precious time shopping… So choose your tour wisely!

Below, you can find our hand-picked selection of the best Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai.

Best Abu Dhabi Tours from Dubai

As I said, there are so many Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai that the choice can look daunting. Based on the research I did for our recent trip, I made a selection of just a few VERY BEST options. This was my personal shortlist.

Here are some of the best-rated Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai , with a short overview of just the main landmarks that you actually visit:

  • Premium Full-Day Sightseeing Tour (+-9-10 hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan. This is the tour we chose and can highly recommend if you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in a day. You can also book this same tour including lunch at a traditional restaurant (we had lunch there too and it was excellent).
  • Full Day Tour with Ferrari World (+-10 hrs). This tour includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Ferrari World, as well as a stop at Heritage Village. If you want to see the Mosque and ride some of the fastest rollercoasters in the world, this is by far the best tour. Most others only include a photo stop at Ferrari World.
  • Full Day Trip with Mosque & Louvre (+- 9hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • Half Day Tour (+- 5hrs). This popular tour only visits the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It’s a good option if you are really short on time.

Good to know: Most of the tours listed here are small-group tours, but they are also available as private tours . You can choose from different options once you select the number of people and travel dates.

Further below, you can read a short review of the tour that we chose and see some more pictures of the places that we visited on this Abu Dhabi day trip.

Review of Our Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour from Dubai

As already mentioned, we chose this highly-rated guided tour for our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip.

Just to be clear – we do not organize these tours or have anything to do with the company that runs them. Like you, we are just travelers who do their own research, pay for the experiences we like to have, and hope that we made the right choice.

This Abu Dhabi tour was not cheap, but it brings you to the most impressive places in Abu Dhabi. We felt that it offers really good value. If you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in just a day, then you really cannot go wrong with this tour.

Here is what our Abu Dhabi tour looked like:

Pick up in Dubai & Drive to Abu Dhabi

We booked the tour starting at 8:45 AM. The evening before the tour, I received a WhatsApp message from the tour company informing us that they would pick us up at 8:15 AM.

The driver was on time and we stopped to pick up two other people along the way. He then brought us all to yet another hotel where we transferred to a small bus (our group had 18 people).

Good to know: The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi normally takes about 1.5 hours, but it can also take much longer due to busy traffic. The same on the way back.

PRO TIP: When booking a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, don’t make any other plans for that day – that way, you don’t have to worry about busy traffic or potential delays. If you are planning a half-day trip , I would also foresee some buffer time, or opt for an afternoon tour (or a ‘sunset’ tour, as they call it) – that way, you can still do something else in Dubai in the morning.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Drive through Abu Dhabi

On the way to Abu Dhabi, our guide informed us that we would start our tour with Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace and visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at the end of the day. This is because there was a big cruise ship in town and since pretty much all visitors go to the Mosque, it’s extremely crowded in the morning.

This was a good decision, indeed. By the time we got to the Mosque, it was just pleasantly lively. I can’t imagine what it must look like in the mornings when several gigantic cruise ships are visiting.

On the way to the President’s Palace, we passed Yas Island and could see the famous Ferrari World and other attractions in the distance. We also saw Saadiyat Island with the Abu Dhabi Louvre – also from quite far away. Once in the city center, we drove past the Corniche – Dubai waterfront – and saw the Founders Memorial as well as the Emirati Palace.

You only get to see all these places from the bus, but it gives you an idea of what Abu Dhabi is like.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Watan

Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace sits in a huge opulent complex by the sea overlooking the city in the distance. The main highlight here is Qasr Al Watan .

This magnificent palace might remind you of the famous Taj Mahal in India, but this one was built just recently – between 2010 – 2017. Its architecture and grandeur will take your breath away!

The palace was built using some of the finest materials including Italian marble, gold, Swarovski crystals, and gigantic handmade carpets. It is absolutely magnificent and I would even say that it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand why it’s not as popular as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These two places are just as impressive and both are absolutely not to be missed in Abu Dhabi!

Qasr Al Watan - one of the main landmarks in Abu Dhabi UAE

Our tour guide gave us a short introduction to the Palace and explained where to find the ‘must sees’. After that, we had about more than an hour to explore the palace and its grounds on our own.

This is something I really liked about this tour – we got just plenty of information, but also plenty of free time at each of the landmarks visited.

Good to know: While it is a working palace, it’s mostly used for ceremonial functions and big political gatherings. So the palace is open to the public, except if there is some special political event or a visit by another head of state.

You will have to go through airport-style security here, but you can simply leave all your belongings on the tour bus and just take your camera with you.

Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace of UAE - Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai

Etihad Towers

The next stop on our itinerary was the Observation Deck at the Etihad Towers . There are five skyscrapers here, of varying height. We were told that the five towers represent unity, like the five fingers of a hand. I also read somewhere that they refer to several important Arabic symbols, such as falconry and swords.

In addition to their unique architecture and symbolism, Etihad Towers offer stunning 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf from the Observation Deck at 300 meters . It’s located on the 74th floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers Hotel .

The views from here are spectacular and – in my opinion – more impressive than from most of the viewpoints in Dubai, including the views from Burj Khalifa.

Right below, you can see the entire Presidential Palace complex as well as the Emirates Palace and several other luxury hotels, including Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi which looks like a copy of the famous Atlantis The Palm in Dubai . The seashore and Corniche make the views even more special.

Good to know: Etihad Towers Observation Deck is supposedly just a short stop of about half an hour, out of which you have about 15 minutes to enjoy the views at the top (which sounds little but is actually plenty). However, depending on the queue at the elevators, it might take longer.

View from Etihad Towers Observation Deck - Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

After the visit to Etihad Towers, we drove to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There is an underground mall here – Souq Al Jami – where you can find a big food court with a wide variety of restaurants.

Before we headed for lunch, our guide quickly checked if everyone was dressed ‘acceptably’ for the Mosque visit and went to get some Abaya (long black dress) and scarves for women.

If you wear long pants/skirt, a blouse that covers your arms completely, and have a scarf to cover your hair, you don’t need this dress. But if your clothes are just not long enough or see-through (even a bit), they recommend wearing the Abaya. So I opted for that, just to be safe.

If you choose the tour that includes lunch , you will have a traditional lunch at the Michelin-star Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. Otherwise, you can decide where you want to eat when you get there. You will find all the famous fast-food chains here as well as Italian and Mexican restaurants, etc. However, it’s your chance to try some really good Arabian food so we recommend that you go to Al Khayma.

We had lunch at this restaurant, following our guide’s recommendation and everything was delicious.

I read in some reviews that people felt lunch was a bit rushed, but we had about 1h15 which was plenty. I even found the time to quietly put on the Abaya before meeting the guide at the agreed time and place.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi and a must-see! It’s the finest example of Islamic architecture and is absolutely breathtaking, both outside as well as inside.

As a non-Muslim, you can only visit part of the Mosque, but no worries – you can see the most impressive parts. You are also allowed to view the main worship hall which is nothing short of remarkable.

Here, you can see the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, ornate decorations, and several impressive Swarovski chandeliers. It’s also incredibly spacious and can accommodate about 40,000 people inside!

If you are a Muslim, you can also go to pray inside, but during the week, the main hall seemed to be empty. The main prayer hall is closed to visitors between noon and 3 pm on Fridays, so tours try to visit before or after that.

Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

As mentioned earlier, the Grand Mosque is one place that is included in all tour itineraries and is visited by pretty much every tourist who sets foot in Abu Dhabi, even if just for a few hours. This means that the Mosque is always extremely busy. Tickets have to be reserved in advance, for a specific time slot, etc.

Because of really bad traffic in Dubai on the day of our visit (it rained the day before which only happens a few times a year and leaves the area in chaos :)), we were way too late for the time slot booked. No worries, though. Everything was rearranged by the tour company while we were having lunch.

We entered without any wait at all and our guide made sure that we had plenty of time inside the Mosque (about 15-20 minutes with a guide and more than an hour on our own).

I liked that they didn’t rush us or cut the tour short and gave us the full experience. This meant that we were back in Dubai later than planned but that was no big deal since it was a full-day trip anyway.

Good to know: Also here, you will have to go through airport-style security. As mentioned before, there is a dress code as well. In general, they recommend long, loose ankle-length trousers or skirts. As a minimum, for men, shoulders and knees have to be covered. For women, the rules are stricter and you have to cover up everything except your face, hands, and feet (which means that sandals are ok).

Our tour provided Abaya dresses and scarves for women, which just made things simpler.

Drive back to Dubai

After our visit to the Mosque, the shuttle brought us back to Dubai. There was plenty of time to rest (or even sleep) on the bus.

Just as in the morning, the bus dropped us off at a place where they had private drivers waiting to take everyone back to their hotels. This way, nobody had to wait longer than necessary. The tour was really well organized and I couldn’t fault anything.

The only issues we had that day were related to exceptionally hard rain that left the roads blank and resulted in really bad traffic. Knowing that it only rains a few days per year in the UAE, the risk of you encountering the same is pretty low. Still, as mentioned before, I wouldn’t make any other plans for the evening – that will make your tour more relaxed.

Abu Dhabi Tour with Kids

If you are travelling with children and wonder if you can do a day tour to Abu Dhabi with kids, my answer is yes, of course. Most tours allow children of any age.

However, which tour to choose also depends on your family situation, how many kids you have, how old they are, etc. In addition, consider how well your children can handle a long bus ride, explore the landmarks, and – not to underestimate – practicalities such as the heat or not being able to use the bathroom or eat whenever they fancy.

That being said, if you can keep the kids busy in the car for 1.5- 2 hours and they can behave at the Mosque or the Presidential Palace, I see no reason why you couldn’t take them.

We did this Abu Dhabi tour with teens and – while they were the only kids in our group – we had no issues whatsoever. They were also truly fascinated by the incredible architecture we saw and truly enjoyed the day (having their phones for the long ride definitely helped though).

When I asked them about their top experiences on this trip, the Abu Dhabi day trip was in their top 3, together with a camel ride in the Dubai desert and a boat ride on the Burj Lake . They also really enjoyed Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark but ‘ranked’ the Abu Dhabi day trip as a more special experience.

TIP: If you want to take a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with children, consider booking a private tour. As already mentioned, pretty much all the tours we listed in this article can also be booked as private tours. It will be much more relaxing and you will spend less time in the car since they will pick you up from the hotel and drive directly to Abu Dhabi rather than gathering the whole group in a bus.

Alternatively, look into tours that visit the Mosque and maybe Ferrari World or one of the other theme parks on Yas Island (e.g. this tour ). That way, your tour has something for everyone in the family. That said, with very young kids, consider height restrictions for rollercoasters and similar.

Practical Info & Tips for Abu Dhabi Tours

Here is some additional information you may want to know when considering a tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi:

  • Most Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai include a pick-up/drop-off at your hotel . Keep in mind that the pick-up time can be up to an hour earlier than the official tour starting time (the same as the drop-off).
  • Pretty much all tours in the UAE include drinking water (on our tour, there was a large cool box full of water on the bus).
  • Keep in mind that entry to Sheikh Zayed Mosque might be restricted at certain times of the day during Islamic holidays and also on Fridays. Qasr Al Watan might also be closed if there are any political meetings at the palace. That’s another advantage of going with a tour – they know the schedules and adjust the visit. Still, you can never exclude a tiny chance of some last-minute changes when visiting places like that.
  • Some Abu Dhabi tours also include Abaya dresses for women at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, but that’s not always the case. So be sure to double-check that in the tour description if you need one.
  • There is no strict dress code at other places in Abu Dhabi, only at the Mosque. However, if you are visiting the Presidential Palace, they also recommend loose long pants or a skirt and a modest blouse/shirt that covers your shoulders.
  • Take some sunscreen lotion and sunglasses with you. A sun hat can be a good idea as well.
  • Pack only what you need – it will be easier to go through security checks everywhere. Furthermore, you can safely leave other belongings (food, sunscreen lotion, etc.) on the tour bus.
  • There are free bathroom facilities at all the sights we visited on this tour, but not on a bus. They also don’t stop anywhere along the way.
  • You get about 60-75 minutes for lunch on this tour, but depending on the traffic, it can be quite late in the day. So if you need some more energy during the day, pack some small snacks with you.

PRO TIP: There’s one thing we noticed when booking our tour to Abu-Dhabi is that on some days, prices were much higher than on others (this could be related to school holidays, public holidays, and similar). So if you are somewhat flexible, check a few different dates when booking the tour – sometimes, travelling a day earlier or later might save you quite some money.

13 amazing natural wonders you can visit in Abu Dhabi

Get these on your bucket list….

Abu Dhabi is a land of beautifully blended contrasts. Of worlds old and new, of deserts, island networks, and lush green oases set against hyper-modern towerscape, and future-tech enhanced infrastructure. Contained within its borders there are many marvels, but often less accessible, it’s the stunning natural ones can easily be overlooked.

This is a guide to some of our favourite Abu Dhabi natural wonders, and where to find them.

Al Mirayr forests

Pic Credit: @wonguy974 via IG

Just a stone skim away from the beautiful Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara ( geolocation here ), you’ll find the arresting sight of a desert forest, known as Al Mirayr. It’s unlikely to be the largest wooded expanse you’ll have clapped eyes on, but with its juxtaposition to the saffron-hued desert sands around it, it might just be one of the most impressive. You’ll need a 4WD enabled vehicle to get there, and if you fancy extending the wadi roaming, there are plenty more exciting sights to explore in the surrounding sand. For more off-the-beaten-track adventures, check out our guide to some of the best off-road trips in Abu Dhabi .

Al Ain Oasis

If you’re looking for green, Al Ain AKA ‘The Garden City’ is a pretty good place to start.  This 1,200-hectare desert oasis is found in the middle of Al Ain and attained UNESCO World Heritage status in 2011. It contains more than 147,000 date palms, trees bearing mangos, oranges, bananas, figs, and jujube. With its whimsical shaded pathways beneath fractal canopies it’s a place that provides a shuddering contrast to the urban jungle of Abu Dhabi’s cityscape. There’s also an Eco-Centre that offers insight into the conservation efforts at the oasis, and a look back at its history.

Al Ain, open daily 9am to 5pm. Tel: (03)  711 8251 , take a virtual tour at  visitabudhabi.ae

Al Wathba Fossil Dunes

The desert areas of the UAE hold many wonders, but few can compare to the ethereal beauty of  Al Wathba’s fossil dunes . These naturally occurring monoliths are jutting, jagged reminders of the emirate’s storied geological past, having been forged over the past 120,000 years. Found a short distance away from the (also well-worth a visit) Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, an expanse covering more than 1,700 of the fossil dunes has now been designated as a protected landmark. The Al Wathba Fossil Dune Protected Area now features a visitor centre, a viewing area, an amphitheatre and 7kms of hike-able trails with educational signage explaining the origins and cultural significance of these magnificent sand relics.

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

A popular resting spot for flamingos during autumn and spring, this note-worthy site can be found beside the beautiful Al Wathba fossil dunes. Known as Flamingo City, it is home to various wildlife habitats, including freshwater and saltwater lakes. The area hosts over 250 bird species, and 37 plant species, as well as a plethora of marine life. The wetland is a popular place for bird watching and even offers two self-guided walking routes to explore the area. To keep the area as natural as possible, there are no cafes so be sure to pack in your reusable water bottles as the walking routes are quite long.

Desert Lakes

There’s a bit of a catch with this pair of entries… Their location is a trade secret (and, well, the second one probably isn’t ‘natural’ is it?). Both images were captured (well before the current drone ban) by the incredibly talented, intrepid photographer, @amarhabeeb . He’s responsible for the discovery of another lisiting a bit further down, but these finds starkly represent what can happen when you follow that pioneer nomad spirit and explore the desert for hidden wonders. Safely of course, it can be an inhospitable place without modern luxuries. If you’re heading out to the wilds, tell someone, go accompanied, go prepared, take more fuel, water and food than you need, and remember there is currently a ban in place for all non authorised drone flights.

Jebel Hafit

Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jebel Hafit is Abu Dhabi’s tallest peak, located in Al Ain, and about 90 minutes’ drive from the capital city. There is a campground that offers tented accommodation and pitches for those that wish to bring their own canvas and poles. You can also rent traditional Bedouin-inspired tents; bubble tents — equipped with panoramic windows that are just perfect for star-gazing; and luxury dome tents which come with AC, a TV and, excitingly a telescope. Prices start from Dhs650. Holiday-makers come here to hike, mountain bike (rental available), dune buggy, ride horses and camels and enjoy the rare fresh air (and lack of light pollution) that contributes to the perfect conditions for astronomy. Wonders above wonders below.

You can book your stay now here or by calling (03) 711 8362.

Jebel Hafit Beehive Tombs

Situated at the foothills of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the ancient tombs mark the beginning of the Bronze Age in the Middle East. 5,000-year-old structures and evidence of ceramic vessels and copper artifacts were found here, indicating the importance of maritime trade across the Arabian Gulf even then. You can visit the park’s majestic natural surroundings on a mountain bike, horse, or camel. Discover archaeological and historical remains that tell stories of this unique area’s ancient habitation.

Mangrove Forests

ubail Mangrove Park opened in January 2020 , offering visitors the opportunity to explore one of this region’s most fascinating natural ecosystems. Found nestled on a quiet outcrop of Jubail Island — the mangroves became an instant hit with locals, residents and tourists. It features a meandering 2.3km boardwalk and sits about 20 minutes drive from Downtown Abu Dhabi. Park inhabitants include herons, flamingos, turtles, gazelle, crabs, as well as some more mysterious creatures. There’s plenty of ways to explore this fascinating turquoise expanse including ranger-led, guided boardwalk (from Dhs50), kayak (Dhs100), and e-canoe tours (from Dhs80) of the mangroves.

Jubail Mangrove Park, Al Jubail Island (next to Saadiyat Island), Abu Dhabi, 8am to 7.30pm daily, Dhs15 for adult, Dhs10. Tel: (05) 63032423.  park.jubailisland.ae

Liwa Oasis and Tal More’eb

Found at the northern edge of Rub’ Al Khali (the Empty Quarter), Liwa Oasis is the ancestral home of the Nahyan family and the Bani Yas tribe. The Liwa Oasis area marks out a 100km stretch of desert, where the dark green of date trees cuts a stark contrast against the amber desert sands. It’s all possible thanks to an elevated water table, close to the surface. There are walled areas, reconstructed forts and watch towers and a collection of truly gigantic dunes, including Tal More’eb , at 300 metres high it’s one of the world’s largest.

Found at the eastern edge of Al Jubail Island, close to Zeera Island and across the water from Khor Laffan, this fluvial feature found amongst the mangroves was given the name ‘Plant Lake’ by the individual that discovered it — Abu Dhabi-based photographer, Amar Habeeb (Insta handle: @amarhabeeb ). The stunning depth of green is no Photoshop trickery, it really is that lucid. When the beguiling natural feature popped up on the digital viewfinder of his drone remote, Habeeb recalls immediately thinking “Emerald Green. I couldn’t believe my eyes”. As mentioned above, the private use of drones is currently prohibited in Abu Dhabi, so you’re unlikely to be able to replicate this epic shot any time soon.

Saadiyat Reef

The emirate’s coral reefs are currently subject to a massive rehabilitation project, supervised by the Environment Agency — Abu Dhabi (EAD). Even with the effort in full swing, there are a number of dive sites across the Abu Dhabi archipelago that offer safe and legal access to coral reefs. You can find multiple dive companies offering chartered trips out to locations such as Philippe’s Reef and Saadiyat Reef (weather and numbers permitting), with prices from around Dhs300 for snorkelling and Dhs500-600 for scuba activities. Whilst the variety and vibrancy of the reef’s colour might not match those found in some other more famous dive spots in the world, the marine life you’ll find navigating them, is truly mask-misting. Turtles, for example, are not an uncommon sight.

Abu Dhabi’s  Salt Lakes  took Instagram by storm last year. Bloggers, influencers and the naturally curious headed out to their location near Al Wathba Wildlife Reserve, to capture snaps with the narrow pastel green lakes filled with crystalline lily pad features. You can find the exact location on  Google Maps , but getting there isn’t easy. Take an SUV, take snacks and back up supplies, tell someone where you are going, do not litter, and make sure you’re all fuelled up. We promise it’s worth it.

Shuweihat Island

This beautifully unique island is surrounded by red rocks and erosion-carved cliffs, with pristine beaches. Unfortunately due to littering and mistreatment, making landfall on the island is currently prohibited for the public. However if you do make the trip, you can enjoy the view from a distance.

Stal targets more success in Abu Dhabi

Gary Stal is targeting more success at Abu Dhabi Golf Club when he tees off in this week’s Abu Dhabi Challenge, the first of back-to-back Challenge Tour events taking place in the UAE as part of the long-term partnership with the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF).

The Frenchman produced the biggest win of his career to date at Abu Dhabi Golf Club in 2015 at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship, where he overturned an eight shot deficit to deny Martin Kaymer and secure a maiden title on the DP World Tour.

The 31-year-old is delighted to be back in the UAE and hopes to use fond memories of this week’s venue as fuel for further success.

“For me, it's always special when I'm back here,” he said. “Just the feeling I had and the memories I made. There was the 16th hole, where I made a big birdie putt, and then the walk up the 18th. I always remember the last putt too. It was just 20cm for the win. That feeling was special.”

Stal, a two-time Challenge Tour winner, has been refamiliarising himself with the course over the last few days as he looks to return to the winners circle for the first time since 2015.

“You need everything on this golf course,” he said. “You need to hit your drives straight and after that you have a lot of six, seven and eight irons to hit, which you need to hit with precision.

“I’ve been preparing the same way I always do. I've taken down some notes on the course, and it's good to remember the wind direction here. For me, the ninth is a key hole this week. It's not easy to hit that fairway, just because of the wind. If I can win again this week, I'll be very happy.”

The Frenchman is one of 19 former DP World Tour winners teeing it up in a star-studded field this week, that includes seven-time winner Álvaro Quirós and 2023 Junior Ryder Cup Captain Stephen Gallacher.

Emirati Number One Ahmad Skaik will make his Challenge Tour debut as 30 spots have been allocated to the Emirates Golf Federation to help create playing opportunities and provide a pathway for Emirati golfers.

The back-to-back events in Abu Dhabi have been made possible due to the long-term partnership between the European Tour group and the EGF, in addition to the support of the host venues Abu Dhabi Golf Club and Saadiyat Beach Golf Club, along with sponsors ARENA, Phoenix Capital and Al Laith.

The Abu Dhabi Challenge will get underway at 6:45am local time, with Stal teeing it up alongside South African Dylan Mostert and Swede Adam Blommé at 8:15am.

Emirates Water and Electricity Company and Tadweer Group partner with Japanese consortium on world’s most advanced waste-to-energy facility in Abu Dhabi

Emirates Water and Electricity Company (EWEC) and Tadweer Group have signed a concession agreement with a Japan-based consortium comprising Marubeni Corporation, Hitachi Zosen Inova AG (HZI), and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (JOIN). The local and global partners will develop the world-leading greenfield Abu Dhabi Waste-to-Energy (WtE) Independent Power Project (IPP).

The concession agreement was signed at the Abu Dhabi Energy Centre by Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, Engineer Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group, and Roni Araiji, Consortium Representative and Managing Director Middle East of Hitachi Zosen Inova Ltd. The signing took place in the presence of representatives from Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) .

Set to be the world’s most advanced WtE facility, and one of the region’s largest, the project will have an expected annual processing capacity of 900,000 tonnes of waste, enabling an expected carbon emissions reduction of 1.1 million tonnes per year. The world-leading project will set benchmarks for WtE energy projects in terms of scale, efficiency and environmental benefits. The project reinforces Tadweer Group’s ambition to divert 80 per cent of Abu Dhabi’s waste from landfill by 2030, while helping to create a blueprint for alternative energy sources.

Othman Al Ali, CEO of EWEC, said: "Today marks a milestone for Abu Dhabi and the UAE as we continue to accelerate the decarbonisation and sustainable transformation of the country’s economy. In partnership with Tadweer Group, this significant waste-to-energy project enables Abu Dhabi’s strategic shift towards integrating sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources that cater to its community's needs and drive the development of the UAE’s circular economy. EWEC is at the forefront of accelerating the UAE’s energy transition, and we are proud to expand our portfolio to include circular economy projects, such as waste-to-energy. We look forward to collaborating with Tadweer Group and our Japanese partners in setting a new standard for waste-to-energy projects in the region and beyond."

Ali Al Dhaheri, Managing Director and CEO of Tadweer Group, said: “This concession agreement marks a new chapter in our mission to promote environmental sustainability and implement accelerated technology, showcasing the importance of waste conversion to clean energy. This project is a cornerstone in our strategy to reduce reliance on landfills, lower carbon emissions, and support the UAE's energy agenda. We look forward to working closely with our partners to harness pioneering technologies that transform waste into valuable resources.”

Isao Suzuki, Regional CEO of Marubeni Corporation for Middle-East, said: “At Marubeni, we are deeply honoured to participate in this landmark waste-to-energy project, a pivotal initiative that embodies our commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. This project not only marks a significant advancement in the UAE’s journey towards a circular economy, but also showcases the strength of international collaboration in addressing global challenges. This initiative aligns seamlessly with Marubeni’s dedication to innovation in the energy sector, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in waste management and energy production.”

The partnership between EWEC, Tadweer Group, Marubeni Corporation, HZI, and JOIN aligns with the objectives of the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, which provides the nation with a framework to achieve sustainable governance, optimising the use of natural resources, and finding efficient infrastructure solutions.
