Heralded as the UK’s answer to Blink-182, Busted became one of the most iconic pop-rock bands of the noughties. Their debut self-titled album released in 2002 featured some of their biggest hits “Year 3000”, “You Said No” and their debut single “What I Go To School For”. Going onto win several accolades including Favourite Newcomer at the National Music Awards and a few BRIT awards saw Busted reach new heights as they released their follow-up album “A Present For Everyone” which went triple platinum in the UK. Their successes continued growing with every single released reaching the top 3 in the UK charts accumulating a number of eight- seriously impressive! With their teenage appeal and emulating a rebellious nature, it’s no wonder that they attracted thousands of adoring fans to their live performances. Opening with classics like “Air Hostess” sees the trio of Matt Willis, Charlie Simpson and James Bourne air jumping as they run across the stage, surrounded by a chorus of screams. Their energy is infectious as the crowd jump up and down, waving their arms in the air to “What I Go To School For” singing along word for word. Their tongue-in-cheek lyrics feed into their banter with the crowd, mirrored by some of the banners that audience wave emphatically. “Year 3000” sends the crowd wild, as the bright lights dart across the stage. “Crashed The Wedding” sees energy levels soar through the roof while ballads like “Sleeping With The Light On” slowing down them temple equally sees the biggest reaction, as the audience sway their arms in the air with the camera lights in the air. If you came to be entertained, Busted will definitely make sure you have a good time.

let me tELL YOU SONGKICK:

okay so when busted announced they were getting back together i was SO happy, the band that made my childhood and the very same band of who no one, including the band themselves, thought would ever get back together and not gonna lie, I'd liked fightstar and Charlie's solo stuff but they were all different and I liked them all in their own way but busted would always have a special part in my heart as my first loves. Anyway, we bought our tickets etc etc and the day finally came, we went and had a meal over at centertainment when

Amazing performance. Lots of energy and love from Charlie, Matt and James. The new tracks they played from the currently unreleased new album were out of this world! I loved every second of it, I was part of the Pigsty Which was ablsolutly isane to see all those people in the crowd and have a different perspective of a gig was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Charlie looks especially happy to be back he was extremely happy and energetic throughout. The lads gave great vocals and played well all night. Very much enjoyed it. Cant wait to see them next time!

After Busted split up I was devastated and when u heard they were having a reunion tour I just knew I had to go! After gettin to see McBusted which had James and Matt this was even better! Play all of the classic songs and I never sat down once. Support acts were great and was an amazing atmosphere. Such funny, talented and down to earth lads. Music sounds even better live. All busted fans must see them!

I've been waiting to see them live for the best part of 18 years and the day before my 21st I finally got to see them.

Best show of my life and I've been to well over 150 gigs in the past 2 years.

Professor Green didn't suit the lineup at all and didn't gain much of a crowd.

Scouting For Girls however were a perfect opening act. Massive crowd with everyone singing along. Brilliant.

Amazing concert, nice to hear the old and new song. Duration was a little short. The band played with the audience to entertain us. Stage was fine, lights were good. I missed the opportunity to shake hands and ask for autographs of the band (there were no VIP tickets)

Noughties pop-punk boyband Busted has announced a UK-wide reunion tour, set to take place later this year, 18 years after they confirmed their split in an emotional press conference.

In the five years they were together between 2000 and 2005, the three-man band – Charlie Simpson , James Bourne and Matt Willis, all now 39 – had four UK number-one singles, won two Brit awards and sold more than 5 million records.

They made waves in the early 2000s with several iconic bangers including “Year 3000”, “Crashed the Wedding” and “Air Hostess”.

The band reformed for a brief stint in 2013, fusing with childhood friends and fellow pop boyband McFly to form spin-off band McBusted, releasing an album and performing a few comeback tours and one-off gigs.

In the tour announcement video, band member James Bourne said: “We were writing songs that made us laugh, and the songs that made us laugh made other people laugh and feel good.”

Here’s everything you need to know if you want to watch Busted perform live, including ticket price, sale information and a full list of tours and venues.

Busted are heading to Manchester as part of a UK tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary

Busted fans had a chance to get early access to tickets today for their huge 20th anniversary tour. The trio will be coming to Manchester's AO Arena later this year as part of a 15-date UK tour.

It’s been 20 years since Busted bounced into the charts with their debut single ‘What I Go To School For’. The tour will see the original much-loved trio - James Bourne, Charlie Simpson and Matt Willis - play their hits and fan-favourites this September.

The band have a loyal following and tickets are in high demand for the Manchester AO Arena date on Sunday, September 24. Busted will also be performing live in Cardiff, Birmingham, London, Nottingham, Glasgow, Liverpool, Newcastle and more.

Today pre-sale tickets went live at 9am on Ticketek and many fans experienced large, online queues. There are number of other early-access options to choose from, all of which carry their own rules that fans will need to follow.

Fans who signed up to the email pre-sale here were able to get access to tickets today. However, those who hadn't were able to use the O2 Priority app or the Three+.

Customers with O2 mobile can get early access to gigs and events via the O2 Priority rewards app and similarly, Three Mobile customers can also get pre-sale access via the Three+ app . The both have Busted pre-sale launches going live at 9am today (March 29).

Ticketmaster and AXS will be available for general sale.

Follow our Busted live blog below for the latest pre-sale ticket updates and information about the tour. Please let us know how you get on in the comments below or email [email protected].

End of live blog - general sale info

I'm finishing up now all, happy Busted day!

General sale tickets will go live at 9am on Friday, March 31 via Ticketmaster and AXS

How are you getting on?

Have you managed to get the tickets you want yet?

Comment below or drop me an email via [email protected]

Stick with the ticket queues and there's still tickets left!

Fans are still managing to get tickets now at 10.30am, so it's worth sticking it out in the ticket queues this morning, try and be patient and do not refresh!

Prices confirmed for Busted

busted tour ticket factory

Tickets first went on sale just over an hour ago at 9am for fans looking to get early access, mainly customers with access to the Ticketek email sign up and O2 Priority and the Three+ app from Three Mobile. Despite thousands of fans joining Ticketek queues the prices have stayed relatively low considering the demand.

The cheapest tickets, 'Reserved Seating B' start at just £42.50, with the next 'Reserved Seating A' ticket options costing £53.75 upwards. The most expensive seating option is the 'Premium Seating' tickets which start at £65.

Ticketek drop down

A few fans have emailed me to ask how they buy more than one ticket.

I will admit Ticketek isn't very clear once you get through the queue. There should be a little drop down number tab so you can select the amount of tickets you want, next to the ticket you're choosing.

I missed it at first but you just need to scroll up.

Ticket update for Manchester AO Arena

It looks like there's still tickets left for the Manchester date.

The area's shaded in colour are what's left on the pre-sale tickets for September 24th. Ticket price info coming shortly.

Remember, there will be more tickets coming in the general sale on Friday, March 31st.

Well in Sophie!

O2 Priority back on

It looks like O2 Priority is back working so worth giving that a try now!

Some fans are now getting tickets

Just had a look and some of you are managing to get through the ticketing queues.

It looks like standing has nearly sold out at Manchester though.

Ticketek queues back open - TRY THIS LINK

I've just double checked the Ticketek queues and it looks like they are experiencing demand again through the email signup link .

TRY THIS LINK HERE.

Don't use Ticketmaster for pre-sale today, use Ticketek

Ticketmaster will host some pre-sale tickets today but you have to go through either the O2 Priority rewards app or the Three+ app .

If you go straight onto the Ticketmaster site you won't get tickets.

You either need to do it through the email sign up if you registered for early access with Ticketek or direct on the above apps.

There's no special code either.

My advice for tickets, don't try O2 Priority if you can help it

If you can help it, your best chance of getting early tickets here is through the email sign ups with Ticketek it looks like the queues has now recovered and they're sending people straight through.

Let me know if you experience anything different.

O2 Priority down

It looks like O2 Priority has given up all together now.

I've just logged onto my app and I'm getting an error message, a few others are too.

busted tour ticket factory

I've got tickets!

I've just gone back to my emails and thanks to a fan's suggestion, followed the link on the latest pre-sale email and it put me through straight away on Ticketek !

O2 Priority update

I've logged into my O2 Priority rewards app and it's saying the queue has paused and there's a wait time of 6 minutes!

Busted fans reporting tickets have sold out already

I'm seeing on Twitter from some fans that tickets are sold out already.

Surely not?!

The stress is real right now.

At the moment I am in the Ticketek queue. Has anyone else managed to get through yet?

Ticketek queues

Looks like Ticketek is getting overwhelming response right now

I've just put all my details in and it has crashed me out

Tickets are NOW LIVE

Go, go, go!

If you've got access to pre-sale tickets you can now get them via Ticketmaster , Ticketek and AXS .

10 minutes to go

There's just 10 minutes to go before pre-sale tickets go on sale. Here's the official announcement video in case you've not seen it or want to get excited all over again!

Ticket tips - how to make sure you get the tickets you want

Whether you're getting tickets today through the email sign up from Ticketek , Ticketmaster , AXS , the O2 Priority rewards app or the Three+ app , these tips below will give you better odds of getting the tickets you want.

  • Make an account - creating an account, or digging out your username and password can stop potential delays when trying to join the sale queue. Create an account, add all your personal details including your home address before tickets go live.
  • Payment at the ready - update your billing information on your account to ensure you have the correct card to buy the tickets. This is always good to check, especially if you don't buy tickets often, your account could have an expired card logged.
  • The 20 minute rule - log on with plenty of time before the tickets go on sale, a chance to select the right dates and open other venue dates just in case your ideal arena sells-out.
  • More devices are better - you can log onto whichever ticket service you are using above and try joining the queue on more than one device. So once the queue opens you can keep your options open as to whatever device is further ahead.
  • Know when to refresh - When it comes to refreshing the webpage, the exact timing can make the difference between getting to the front or back of the queue. It's a useful thing to do before the queue opens as you wait to click into the line, but whatever you do do not refresh once you have joined the online queue as this will boot you to the very back.

Busted adds new UK tour dates – how to get tickets today

Busted are crashing back into our lives this autumn with a 20th anniversary greatest hits tour around the UK, featuring special guests Hanson, New Hope Club and The Tyne – Here’s how to get tickets today.

One day, when you came home, at lunchtime, you heard that Busted were going back on tour.

Well, it’s true. This September, the boy band are heading out on tour to celebrate 20 years of success. Armed with their greatest hits, Charlie Simpson, Matt Willis and James Bourne will be bringing the good old days of Noughties pop punk to concert halls across the UK.

The trio will be playing 15 shows in major venues including London’s O2, Liverpool’s M&S Bank Arena, and Birmingham’s Utilita Arena. The group will also be joined by three supporting guests: Hanson, New Hope Club and The Tyne.

The announcement of the 20th anniversary tour comes alongside the news that Busted will be re-releasing versions of some of their most popular tracks. Starting with their 2002 hit Loser Kid, the band will be putting out 15 songs in total from Friday 14th April.

The group are also promising further collaborations with other bands, including All Time Low and McFly. All the '00s kids out there will probably remember that Busted and McFly collaborated in 2013 and went on a string of tours as McBusted.

More like this

Even before then, however, Busted had already earned a spot as Noughties icons. With songs like Year 3000, Crashed the Wedding and even a version of Thunderbirds are Go!, they typified the cheeky and upbeat style of music from that era.

Before splitting up originally in 2005, the trio had secured four UK number-one singles, won two BRIT Awards, and sold over 5 million records. Not much has changed in the decades since, as the band have gone on to release two more studio albums in 2016 and 2019 and toured regularly.

Now, they’re heading on tour again and we can’t wait to meet you there. Here’s how you can get tickets.

Event Details

Busted have announced that they will be celebrating their 20 th anniversary with an arena tour which is heading to The O2 on 10, 27 September and 10 October 2023. The band will be joined by special guests Hanson and The Tyne.

Impossible though it may seem, it’s been twenty years since Busted bounced into the charts with the irrepressible pop-punk energy of their debut single ‘What I Go To School For’ . It kickstarted a succession of hits for the trio, including the #1 smashes ‘Crashed The Wedding’, ‘Who’s David’ , ‘Thunderbirds Are Go’, ‘You Said No’ and the Top 3 singles ‘Year 3000’ , ‘Air Hostess’ and ‘Sleeping WIth The Light On’. Now Busted celebrate their 20th anniversary by announcing details of a major UK arena tour, alongside a series of new versions of fifteen of their classic hits to be released in the build-up, with some very special guests

The tour will see the original much-loved trio - James Bourne, Charlie Simpson and Matt Willis - play their hits and fan-favourites this September. The first track to launch the 20 th anniversary celebrations will be a new version of Busted’s song ‘Loser Kid’ featuring Simple Plan, which will be released on 14 April. Loser Kid featured as the final track on their self-titled debut album and was co-written by Bourne, Simpson and Willis.

Busted’s many successes spread far beyond the singles charts. Three of their four studio albums also peaked at #2, with 4.5 million sales leading to eight Platinum certifications as well as a total of 25 weeks in the Top 10 and two 5x Platinum selling albums. They have won two BRIT Awards - Best Pop Act and Best British Breakthrough - while multiple sold-out arena tours have seen them sell more than 2 million tickets.

Busted’s 20th anniversary tour follows Charlie Simpson’s recent triumph as the winner of 2023’s ’The Masked Singer’, adding to his other projects which have included four solo albums and four albums with the rock band Fightstar. James Bourne is a renowned songwriter, with credits including McFly, The Jonas Brothers, 5 Seconds of Summer and The Vamps, as well as his band Son of Dork and two recent solo albums ‘Safe Journey Home’ (2020) and ‘Sugar Beach’ (2022). After releasing his debut solo album, Matt Willis famously won ‘I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here’ leading to a successful television career as well as acting roles which have included the recent West End hit ‘2:22 A Ghost Story’.

Indiana candy and chocolate factories you don't need a golden ticket to tour

busted tour ticket factory

If Oompa Loompas were real, they would've sung a song about how terrible " Willy's Chocolate Experience " was in Glasgow, Scotland, last week.

What do you get when you pay $44 a ticket to see "a celebration of chocolate in all its delightful forms?" Apparently a sparsely decorated warehouse with a half-inflated bouncy castle, jaded actors who clearly look miserable , as well as a nightmare-fueled villain who reduced some children to tears.

Even worse, there was no chocolate .

Kids received two jelly beans and a cup of limeade. Organizers have since apologized after furious parents called police , demanding refunds, the BBC reported.

'Fiasco': Willy Wonka experience in Scotland creates sour taste for ticket buyers

If those same U.K. parents ever travel to the United States, they ought to visit Indiana. The Hoosier state is fortunate to have several chocolate and candy factories that won't leave you feeling sour by the end of your trip.

Here are some of the sweetest tours even Willy Wonka would be proud of.

Abbott’s Candies - Hagerstown

Abbott's has been making caramel since before automobiles were invented. The company bills itself as the oldest candy shop in Indiana having been established in 1890. You can visit this Hagerstown confectionary for its handmade caramels and toffees as well as peanut and cashew brittle. And while there's no river of chocolate to sail on, Abbott's has a lot of fudge to enjoy.

Free, handicap accessible tours are available at Abbott's for small to large groups from 10-10:30 a.m. or 1-1:30 p.m., according to the company, which asks visitors to book the tours ahead of time in order to reserve a spot. You can request a tour online at abbottscandy.com/tours/ to watch as the candy is made.

Where it is : 48 E Walnut St, Hagerstown, IN 47346

Schimpff’s Confectionery - Jeffersonville

Opened in 1891, Schimpff's Confectionery in Jeffersonville near Louisville is one of the oldest family-owned candy businesses in the country. Visitors can enjoy the 50s-style soda fountain, candy museum , enjoy locally made favorites such as Cinnamon Red Hots and watch as the candy is being made .

Free tours lasting roughly 40 minutes are available Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m., according to the company, except on major holidays when the factory is closed.

Where it is : 347 Spring St, Jeffersonville, IN 47130

South Bend Chocolate Company - South Bend (of course)

Visitors who take the factory tour at the South Bend Chocolate Company are treated to a pretty sweet deal.

A guide leads guests through its more than 58,000 square-foot factory, teaching a history lesson of chocolate and its origins. The chocolate museum is home to one of the largest collections of chocolate memorabilia in the world, according to the company, including a 1,300-year-old Mayan chocolate pot.

For "Wonka-wannabes" who pay a small fee, you can go behind the scenes for a personal tour lasting roughly an hour. The cost is $5 ages 12 and up, $2 for children 2-11. Tours are at the top of every hour, 9 a.m.–3 p.m. Mon–Fri and 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on Saturdays. Closed Sundays & major holidays.

Where it is : 3300 W Sample St South Bend, IN

DeBrand Fine Chocolates - Fort Wayne

DeBrand Fine Chocolates founder, Cathy Brand-Beere, began her confectionery career at age 8 , making and selling candy in elementary school. Her passion for chocolate never soured, according to her company website. Today, her company employs roughly 100 people and has retail shops in Fort Wayne and in Indianapolis.

Visitors to Fort Wayne can take a tour of the factory, viewing the chocolate making kitchens and walk away with gourmet chocolate samples. Public tours happen Tuesdays at 10 a.m., Thursdays at 1 p.m. and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., according to the company. The cost is $10 per person, with each person receiving a rebate of $10 off a $20 or more purchase. No reservation is required. Private tours are available as well.

Where it is : 10105 Auburn Park Dr, Fort Wayne, IN 46825 .

A Few Jelly Beans and a World of Disappointment at Willy Wonka Event

Families traveled to Glasgow for an event that claimed to channel the magic of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” They got a couple of jelly beans.

An event space has a few fake candy canes and mushrooms, but no people.

By Amanda Holpuch

Families in Scotland were expecting to taste chocolate treats and observe “optical marvels” at a Willy Wonka-themed event in Glasgow this past weekend. Instead, they got a couple of jelly beans, a short walk around a nearly empty warehouse and a visit from police officers.

The event, Willy’s Chocolate Experience, scheduled for Feb. 24 and 25, promised on event listing websites to include chocolate fountains, performances by Oompa Loompas and interactive experiences inspired by scenes from Roald Dahl’s book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

One father, Stuart Sinclair, drove two hours from Dundee to take his three children to the event. “There was maybe 20 chairs, a couple of tables and a half-inflated bouncy castle,” he said.

Mr. Sinclair said that he paid 35 pounds, or about $44, per ticket for his two sons, aged 10 and 11, and his daughter, 4, who was dressed in a Willy Wonka costume and had told her preschool teachers how excited she was to go to the event.

“The children got two jelly beans each,” Mr. Sinclair said. “And then they got a half a cup of lemonade.”

Families had booked time slots to enter the venue every 15 minutes and were greeted by rows of unadorned tables and walls of black fabric separating one sparsely decorated space from another.

“As soon as they walked in the door, they were like, ‘wow,’ just shaking their heads and totally in disbelief of how bad it was,” Mr. Sinclair said.

Alana Lockens, of Hamilton, said that after she had bought tickets, she noticed the event website had been updated with a legal warning to say that it was not related to the Wonka franchise, which is owned by Warner Bros. She grew concerned it was a scam and was initially relieved to arrive and see an actual event taking place.

“I can laugh about it now, but initially I just thought it looked ridiculous,” said Ms. Lockens, who went with her ex-husband, a friend and her two children. “It was so poorly done considering how much the tickets had cost us.”

Facing crowds of disappointed families, event organizers abruptly canceled the event Saturday afternoon.

Police Scotland said that officers were called after the event was canceled, but that the police determined they were not needed. It was not clear who called the police.

The event organizer, the House of Illuminati, addressed the complaints on Saturday, saying in a statement that it recognized the event was a disappointment and that it should have canceled it earlier. “We fully apologize for what has happened and will be giving full refunds to each and every person that purchased tickets,” the company said in a statement on its Facebook page, which has since been removed.

The House of Illuminati did not respond to requests for comment.

The event took place at Box Hub, an event space in Glasgow.

Matt Waterfield, the operations manager for Box Hub, said in an email that the House of Illuminati approached him in early January and that the company was entirely responsible for the marketing, promotion and operation of the event. “They dressed the venue on Friday,” he said. “The result was incredibly underwhelming.”

“We are fully on side with the many outraged customers and truly hope that House of Illuminati refunds these families as promised,” he said.

Families who attended the experience and people hired to work at it gathered in a Facebook group to complain about what had happened and to discuss how it would be set right.

Jenny Fogarty, who was hired to play an Oompa Loompa, told The Scotsman that she was given a 15-page script to read the night before the event began and that she received her costume an hour before families arrived.

“The wigs were very cheap,” Ms. Fogarty said. “We were just handed an Amazon box that probably arrived that morning.”

Ms. Fogarty said that she was told she would be paid £16.66 an hour, but that she had not been paid yet.

The event was marketed like immersive experiences that have appeared in cities across the world in the last two decades, such as the Museum of Ice Cream in New York and “ Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience .”

The event’s website built on that suggestion but also hinted that the experience might be of questionable quality.

It promised “a journey filled with delicious treats, enchanting adventures, and moments worth capturing,” and it included elaborate, candy-colored illustrations. Those illustrations were marred by unusual misspellings and phrases, including: “a pasadise of sweet teats” and “exarserdray lollipops.”

Mr. Sinclair said that although his family was disappointed by Willy’s Chocolate Experience, he and his children still made the most of their day in Glasgow, taking his daughter to make her first teddy bear at a Build-a-Bear workshop.

“ The worst part of all,” Mr. Sinclair said, “there was no chocolate.”

The Ukrainian forces who made a determined last stand in a Mariupol steel mill against Russian troops were a mixture of seasoned soldiers, border guards, a controversial national guard regiment and volunteers who took up arms in the weeks before Russia’s invasion.

As Russia announced it had completed its takeover of Mariupol with the surrender of the fighters who served as the final obstacle, Ukraine’s government did not confirm the city’s fall. Earlier in the week, Ukrainian officials said its combantants in the Azovstal steel plant had completed their mission and were being evacuated, describing them as heroes who had fulfilled a grueling task .

Here’s a look at these Ukrainian forces, who were taken prisoner by the Russians as they left the plant, and what they accomplished:

WHO WERE THE DEFENDERS OF MARIUPOL?

Russia’s Defense Ministry said a total of 2,439 Ukrainian fighters from the steelworks had surrendered since Monday, including over 500 on Friday, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti.

The fighters who held out at Azovstal, for much of the nearly three-month siege of Mariupol with Ukrainian civilians who sought safety in the plant’s underground bunkers and tunnels, came from a variety of different military and law enforcement units, according to Ukrainian officials.

(AP Photo/Nati Harnik, File)

There was the Azov Regiment, which is part of Ukraine’s National Guard; the 36th Special Marine Brigade of Ukraine’s Naval Forces and the 12th brigade of the National Guard. Border guards, police officers, and territorial defense squads formed shortly before the war supplemented their ranks.

The bulk of these forces were deployed to defend Mariupol , home to a stategically located port, at the start of the Russian invasion. Marines from the 36th brigade held the port and another large plant in Mariupol for more than a month, until they ran out of supplies and ammunition.

They moved to the Azovstal steel mill to join the Azov Regiment, a national guard unit with roots in the far right, and some of them were captured by the Russians.

WHY DOES RUSSIA LABEL THEM ‘NATIONALISTS’?

In announcing Azovstal’s seizure, the Russian Defense Ministry’s chief spokesman referred to the Azov Regiment’s fighters as Nazis and said their commander was taken away in an armored vehicle because of local residents’ alleged hatred of him “for numerous atrocities.”

No evidence has surfaced of the regiment mistreating Ukrainian civilians, hundreds of whom sheltered underground with the fighters. The regiment released several videos taken inside Azovstal that showed their members interacting with the civilians and giving children sweets.

Russian officials and state media repeatedly made negative assertions about the Azov Regiment.

The National Guard unit grew out of a group called the Azov Battalion, formed in 2014 as one of many volunteer brigades that rose to bolster Ukraine’s underfunded and questionably led military in the fight against Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine.

That conflict broke out after massive protests drove Ukraine’s Kremlin-leaning president from office.

The Azov Battalion drew its initial fighters from far-right circles and elicited criticism for some of its tactics. Its current members rejected accusations of nationalism and radicalism. Sviatoslav Palamar, the regiment’s deputy commander, said in a recent interview from the steel mill that he preferred the term “patriotism.”

WHAT DID THE DEFENDERS ACCOMPLISH?

As Mariupol became a symbol of the suffering and resistance of Ukrainians after Russia invaded their country, Ukrainian officials repeatedly stressed the role the fighters at Azovstal played in defending the city and stymying Russian progress elsewhere.

“The Ukrainian troops in Mariupol have already performed a feat, drawing the elite forces of the Russian army onto themselves and significantly slowing down the advance of the Russians in the southeast,” Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko said.

After the plant’s defenders were instructed to end their fight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the move was proper and humane because “Ukraine needs Ukrainian heroes to be alive. It’s our principle.”

The ruined seaside city and the outgunned and outmanned Ukrainian fighters whose persistence frustrated Russia’s objective to capture Mariupol quickly are now irrevocably etched into Ukrainian history, regardless of the outcome of the war.

The defense of Mariupol “will go down in history as Thermopylae of the 21st century,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukraine’s president, said as the fighters started leaving the plant. “The Azovstal defenders thwarted the enemy’s plans to seize eastern Ukraine, drew away enormous numbers of enemy forces, and changed the course of the war.”

Thermopylae is widely considered one of history’s most glorious defeats, in which 300 Spartans held off a much larger Persian force in 480 B.C. before finally succumbing. They were killed to a man, including their king.
