Our favorite Alaska memory

dog sledding tour fairbanks

What a fun time! The dogs were great, our guide was friendly and informative, the scenery was gorgeous. Friends at home are all envious. Well worth it, and our favorite AK memory.

Leslie is extremely friendly and really loves her dogs

dog sledding tour fairbanks

First time ever mushing or  even dog sledding , Leslie made this a wonderful experience and left me wanting to do it again and again. She is extremely friendly and really loves her  dogs , which is nothing but great considering what they do for her.

I cannot say near enough good stuff about this whole adventure,  even  though it was only one hour, it was extremely wonderful! If you are ever in Fairbanks and have a hankering for some adventure definitely check out Paws for Adventure!

I have a new found respect for mushers and sled dogs

I have a  new found respect  for mushers and sled dogs. They run and mush in weather below 15 degrees for days. Rich, professional musher, was our guide. He brought 10 of his Alaskan huskies. They are smaller and leaner than you would think because they are long distance runners. One of them ran in the Iditarod twice and eight in the Yukon. He cares for his dogs and don’t see them as replaceable. This was nice to see. The dogs enjoyed us giving them love and attention.

One of the great Fairbanks experiences! A+++

Wonderful experience! Just a short walk from A Taste of Alaska Lodge ! Awesome ride with musher Peter! The dogs were well cared for and seemed happy to be taking us for a ride. We appreciated Leslie arranging for her husband to drive us up the hill to the lodge! One of the great Fairbanks experiences! A+++

If you’re visiting Fairbanks, Alaska this year and you want to visit an authentic Alaskan dog musher, come to Goldstream Valley — 10 miles northwest of Downtown Fairbanks — and let me show you around my little piece of heaven.

Next, I’ll introduce you to my family of happy huskies. My loving and loyal dogs have taken me down a trail of challenge and adventure through some of the wildest beauty left on Earth. It would be my honor to share some of these experiences with you.

After you see a winter camp and learn how I fell in love with sled dogs way back in 1969, we’ll go in the cabin and have some refreshments. After getting comfortable around the kitchen table, I’ll compare the Yukon Quest and the Iditarod, and share with you how I felt to cross the finish line as the first woman to ever complete the Iditarod. Then, I’ll recount the greatest adventure of my life so far — the 1,200-mile Hope ’91 journey through the Russian Far East.

In the summer, the tour begins at 10:00 a.m. and finishes around 1:30 p.m. I strive to give you the best trip possible to teach you about the history of mushing and the joy of being around these wonderful dogs.

My Family of Merry Dogs

I live on 20 acres of boreal forest, made up of mostly white-barked birch trees and old spruce. During your Alaskan adventure, you and your kids are welcome to explore the forest and enjoy the natural beauty of the land.

Fairbanks Dog Sledding Tour Reviews

1. fairbanks: dog sledding and mushing experience.

dog sledding tour fairbanks

  • Duration: 30 minutes
  • Departure:  3355 Repp Rd, North Pole, AK
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes: Experienced guide and Alaskan husky dog team, jacket, bibs, boots, gloves, neck gator

If you’re looking for an action-packed activity to partake in on your trip to Fairbanks but already have a full schedule, I have just the ticket for you!

The Fairbanks: Dog Sledding and Mushing Experience tour will give you and the rest of your party a taste of this incredible tradition that will fit into any itinerary easily. Plus, who doesn’t like dogs, racing around in the snow, and enjoying the raw beauty of Alaska?!

As this tour does last just 30 minutes, you get to select among many different start times – whatever works best for you and your group! You won’t always get the same musher to guide you around, but I’ve found that they all tend to be very friendly and knowledgeable.

They’ll give you a safety briefing beforehand, but they’re also there to answer any questions you may have.

Upon arrival, you’ll also be provided with all necessary snow gear to make sure you stay comfortable and warm. This is super convenient, as you don’t have to worry about cruising around Fairbanks with all of your snow clothes just for the purpose of the tour.

Expand To See More See Less

It’s now time to hop onboard the tour’s custom-built sled pulled by sweet and well-trained huskies across the impeccable Alaskan landscape!

As you cruise around, your guide will offer an educational, exciting commentary about the dogs and how the tradition came to be. Our guide made regular stops so we could get off and stretch our legs, as well as take some amazing photos and videos!

I have to say that I truly enjoyed getting to spend some time and pet these furry guys (referring to the dogs, not the guides), who were so charismatic and sweet!

Oh, and you even get the option to ride around on snowmobiles if the weather and time allow it!

Tour Information & Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, other experiences you may enjoy:, 2. fairbanks: 1-hour alaskan winter dog sledding adventure.

dog sledding tour fairbanks

  • Duration: 1 hour
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time:  10:00 AM, 11:30 AM, 2:30 PM
  • Includes: Transportation, cocoa, coffee, tea

This next tour draws many similarities to our first, with this being a more compact experience that’s easy to fit into a busy schedule. Lasting just around an hour, it does include roundtrip transportation so you don’t have to worry about booking it on your own.

The Fairbanks: 1-Hour Alaskan Winter Dog Sledding Adventure Tour will take you on an educational, beautiful, exhilarating experience you’re sure to want to repeat next time you’re in the far north!

Your tour will start out with your guide picking you right up from your hotel lobby (or another location in town), so you don’t have to worry about any logistics!

The entire staff is super friendly and well-organized, and knowledgeable so if there’s anything you’d like to know, don’t hesitate to ask them. Oh, and if you need some snow gear or clothing, they’ll almost always have some to make sure you’re warm and stay safe.

Now, it’s time to meet the pups and hop on the sled to set off into the perfectly untouched, snowy Alaskan wilderness.

Along the way, your guide/musher will share fascinating facts about the history of this tradition which is actually the reason why the state could even be as inhabited as it is today!

Make stops along the way to take photos at some of the most breathtaking spots on your route, which make for excellent souvenirs afterward.

I was also quite grateful that we got to spend some time in the warming hut, where we were able to regain some energy and sip on either hot chocolate, coffee, and/or tea.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part (which is hard, considering it was all amazing) was getting to spend time with these energetic, enthusiastic dogs who are so sweet and fun! Learn about each one and how they were trained, along with other interesting facts about the area and tradition!

3. Fairbanks: Moonlight Dog Sled, Dinner & Northern Lights

dog sledding tour fairbanks

  • Duration: 6 hours
  • Departure Time:  9:00 PM
  • Includes: Transportation, dog sled ride, meal and beverage

Perhaps the other two tours caught your attention, but you’re looking for a more comprehensive Alaskan tour. If you’d like a longer experience, the Fairbanks: Moonlight Dog Sled, Dinner & Northern Lights tour cannot be beat.

It’s a unique excursion that takes place in the evening, and it the perfect alternative to just going out to dinner at a restaurant or simply going to see the Northern Lights.

You don’t have to worry about navigating to the start point, as your guide will be there to pick you up right from the comfort of your hotel.

After you undergo a safety briefing and are given all necessary safety and snow gear, it’s time to go meet the gorgeous dogs and hop on the sleds! This is a great experience for families, friends, and significant others as you’ll get to share sleds most times.

As you glide through the vast winter wonderland, you’ll learn about the history of dog sledding and how it’s been around for literally thousands of years.

Upon arrival to your destination, you’ll be greeted with a hearty feast of the best salmon I’ve ever tasted, and plenty of hot beverages to keep warm with.

If you are allergic or simply aren’t a fish fan, the cooking staff is super accommodating and will come up with something else that suits your tastes.

You’ll then have time to cruise around and get to know the pups before the Aurora Borealis makes its appearance. Once it does, you’ll get to either enjoy the northern-facing windows from the yurt or watch without obstructions from outdoors.

Either way, you’ll get a front-row seat to this breathtaking phenomenon that is absolutely worth taking some photos with!

4. Dog Sled Adventure in Fairbanks

dog sledding tour fairbanks

  • Duration: 1.5 hours to 2 hours
  • Departure:  3873 Elliott Hwy, Fairbanks, AK
  • Departure Time: 1:00 PM
  • Includes: Guided tour with dog sled

Are you looking for a fun activity to participate in with your children or the entire family? Perhaps you’d like to have fun and learn more about Alaska’s history, but want to stick to a tighter budget?

Whatever the case may be, I’m willing to bet that the Dog Sled Adventure in Fairbanks tour  is perfect for your needs.

This tour does last anywhere from about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, where you’ll not only get to experience the dog sledding, but get to see many important landmarks and hidden gems along the way.

After you arrive to the meet up point, your guide will provide you with a safety briefing and any necessary snow gear you may not have brought along with you. After that, it’s time to head outside to meet and learn about the ultra-fluffy dogs who will be your transport for the day.

As you cruise along, enjoy seeing different sights including the North Pole, ice carvings, and you may even get to see the Northern Lights!

Of course, this isn’t guaranteed as the guides cannot control the Aurora, but it’s exciting knowing that it’s a possibility.

The guide filled us in on how dog sledding started out in Siberia and expanded over the polar north for over hundreds of years, spanning different continents!

This was truly one of the most beautiful experiences I’ve ever seen, not only in Alaska, but in the entire world. The surrounding landscapes seem like something out of a painting, with the guide allowing us time to stop and take photos and videos.

The dogs are clearly very well taken care of, too, and genuinely seemed to enjoy the trip even more than any of us humans!

5. Private Guided Chena River Mush Dream Vacation in Fairbanks

dog sledding tour fairbanks

  • Duration: 1.5 hour
  • Departure:  265 Gettinger Rd, Fairbanks, AK
  • Departure Time:  10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:00 PM
  • Includes: Guided tour, snow gear

Have you ever been curious about the mushing lifestyle and what is involved in riding around with these gorgeous dogs? If you’d like to learn more firsthand, look no further because the Private Guided Chena River Mush Dream Vacation in Fairbanks tour  has you covered!

This is yet another shorter experience, so you don’t have to worry about figuring out how to fit it into your itinerary.

After you arrive at the meet up point, you’ll be provided with a safety briefing and snow gear, including a snow bib, parka, gloves, boots, bibs, and more.

The staff is very friendly and eally makes sure that everyone is comfortable and answers any questions they may have. After everyone is feeling confident and ready to go, you’ll head outside to the husky kennel to see and meet these guys.

What I really loved about this tour is that it’s completely private, so you have the opportunity to learn and see more about what interests  you . It’s a great way to avoid groups of tourists and just enjoy the fresh wilderness air and expansive views.

Your destination for the day is the Chena River, making intermittent stops along the way for plenty of photo ops!

You’ll learn and see so much here, which was honestly a million times more educational than any documentary or book would be. Take some time to meet the 4-legged part of the crew, where the musher tells you how they’re trained and about their daily life.

Hanging out in their authentic Mongolian Yurt complete with a charming wood stove only made the experience that much more special and comfortable.

If you’re going to take any kind of tour in Alaska, I highly recommend it be one of the best Fairbanks dog sledding tours.

  • Mush on wheels with a racing-size team of Alaskan Huskies
  • Play with this summer’s puppies
  • Check out winter mushing equipment
  • Meet real Iditarod mushers
  • Learn about the history of dog mushing in Alaska

We start this tour by introducing you to Alaskan Huskies and the sport of long distance racing. The owners of Black Spruce Dog Sledding are multi-time finishers of the 1,000 mile Iditarod! Please walk around our dog yard and interact with our super friendly dogs.

After socializing with the pack, we’ll show you how to harness and hook them up for the ride! Our comfortable, 6-passenger wheeled vehicle is safe for the whole family, and is equipped with an engine so we can assist our dogs uphill, and over tough terrain.

The trail ride is 0.5 to 5 miles in length, depending on the weather conditions. (In summer, runs must be kept shorter to keep our dogs from over-heating.) We’ll stop multiple times on the trail so you can take pictures with the dogs and change positions in the vehicle.

We finish up this tour by showing you some of our most important mushing gear… oh, and our newest puppies!

  • Chevron down Tour Length

Duration between 2 – 3 hours, depending your level of interest and participation. If you ask lots of questions, take lots of pictures and want to pet all of the dogs, you’ll probably be here for closer to three hours. If you have scheduling restraints, just let us know.

  • Chevron down Tour Times

Did you know Fairbanks has some of the largest temperature swings in the world? In summer, daytime temps are frequently in the mid-70’s or even 80’s! That may not be too hot for you, but to keep our dogs safe and comfortable, we run our summer mushing tours in the morning and in the evening.

Worried about daylight come fall? Don’t be! We schedule our tours to operate during daylight hours only. To get some idea of the daylight you’ll receive in Fairbanks during your visit, check out this Sun Calculator

  • Chevron down Group Size

We can accommodate as few as two (2) people, or as many as five (5) people on this tour from June – September. In October, we can increase this number to 10 people, and can take out two groups of 5 people on back-to-back runs.

Some exceptions to the 5 person maximum can be made for children who are small enough to fit on an adult’s lap. Contact us at [email protected] about special arrangements.

  • Chevron down Pricing

We do not provide transportation to/from our location. Most of our visitors have their own personal or rental vehicle. Most of the time a small, compact car can make the trip up here just fine. However, in winter, snow storms may force us to temporarily restrict our tours to only those visitors with all-wheel drive (AWD) or (4WD).

  • MCBTA01 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The most fun I had in Fairbanks. This was the most fun we had in Fairbanks. We had no idea what to expect and it was a blast. The dogs are amazing. They're gentle and friendly, and very well trained. My wife and I rode in the sled so all we had to do was enjoy the ride, the view and shoot photos. The scenery is spectacular. They have a very nice cabin/office to hang out in while you wait. The staff and sled drivers were very informative, they explained everything. And they have loaner jackets, hats, gloves if you need extra clothing. We'll definitely do it again. Read more Written April 1, 2024
  • Seizethatday 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A historical experience! I signed up for this tour on Susan Butcher Day, which is the first Saturday of March each year. I also watched her documentary prior to my trip. The kennel is the oldest and most established and highly recommended by locals. Miguel was my musher and his dogs were very well-cared for. He raised them when they were pups and they were very playful and affectionate. It was a memorable experience and highlight of my trip. I also bought the children’s book Granite, a story about Susan’s lead dog who won the Iditarod 3 times in a row, and retired from racing after Susan’s 4th win. Read more Written March 27, 2024
  • X5600MJcarolw 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles What a fun ride! We had a great time. The sled was easy to get in and out of (we’re septuagenarians). Our musher was very informative, and the team was composed of her own personal dogs. The dogs were very friendly, and really seemed to enjoy pulling us around. They can’t wait for the next trip. The history of the kennel makes the experience even better. Buy the book for your grandkids. Read more Written March 5, 2024
  • MusicMan42 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Dog mushing in Alaska Our guide (Miguel) was very helpful, courteous, personable and knowledgeable during our dog mushing experience in Fairbanks. Although we traveled over icy tundra and a frozen river during our journey, the scenery was beautiful and the opportunity to have nine strong husky type dogs propel us over this frozen landscape was an amazing experience! We chose this particular kennel due to their origination by one of Alaska’s foremost lady dog sledders who had passed away in recent years. She set a wonderful example of how these dogs can be cared for, and still accomplish the tasks they are asked to perform. A word of caution for those who have any type of back ailment. The sled you are traveling on has minimal cushioning, and the tundra you were traveling over can be very rough at times. It is a wonderful experience as long as you are properly dressed, and can handle the bumpy ride. Read more Written February 29, 2024
  • toddk373 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A must winter experience in AK Perfect distance to travel to get a good feel for what it is like dog sledding in the arctic. Our Musher was enthusiastic and truly loved the sport/dogs. This is a must experience for anyone coming to AK in the winter. Great location close to the airport. You literally could go dog sledding 2 hours before your flight home. The history and legend of Trailbreaker Kennel is unmatched. Good people all around. Read more Written February 25, 2024
  • Q6592OPlindab 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Divine Intervention, Meant To Happen After my other tour canceled 1 hour before pickup time, I called around hoping to find another place. Through divine intervention, Yellow Taxi service told me to check Trail Breaker Kennel, well they had 1 spot left & I booked it. I had Yellow Taxi take me there & I'm so glad my other tour canceled, because Trail Breaker Kennels are the best. Their senior dogs & one 2yr. old in training were awesome, Susan Butcher's daughter & our sled driver, are the nicest people you will ever meet, I highly recommend them, sorry I didn't remember their names, 2 very special ladies. • fatemehh293 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great experience It was an amazing experience! We had a fantastic time with our skilled and friendly musher, Keaton. During the ride, he stopped to take photos of us. We also had a chance to see a moose passing through the trees. Afterward, we got to spend some time petting the dogs. Trevor, the internal guy, was also so kind. They provided a lot of winter gear for free, in case yours wasn't suitable for the temperature. Plus, they offer free hot drinks after the ride, which complete your cool experience. The price was very reasonable. Moreover if you don't have a car, getting there from Fairbanks via Lyft is easy and affordable (around $20). I highly recommend this dog sledding experience! Read more Written February 17, 2024

We visited on 1/12/24 and our Musher gave us a wealth of information and answered all of our questions and seemed happy to share! We enjoyed our experience so much! Both of the staff were genuine and friendly! The dogs are happy doing what they do and are well cared for! The dogs are precious and each have their own personality. I loved how she talked about listening to her dogs to see what roles they want and it shows. She educated us so much about the breed, what is required to maintain, proper attire, and etc. It was very interesting and admirable. The lead dogs had a sort of pride to them and each dog was animated with passion for what they do and charm. We would highly recommend to others! Read more Written January 16, 2024
  • Discover59743322144 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing and informative ride!! Just the perfect length! So pleased with this!! The team made sure every one in the group would be properly layered and warm before setting out. After getting settled in and we were off and it was just purely magical gliding through the snow. Our musher was giving us information about the dogs throughout the ride which was exactly what we were looking for so I feel I have a bit more knowledge on the subject now! Once back, we were able to love on the dogs and get some more pics! It was such a great tour, with amazing people extremely dedicated to this, that I highly recommend it!! ❤️ Read more Written January 16, 2024

A short trip around with the dogs and then meeting each one. We loved it. Definitely worth doing if you’re in the area. The talk as we continued around the property was very informative and the dogs are beautiful and well cared for. I went to a kennel years ago in summer but didn’t get a sled ride. This was excellent. • ChristieD68 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Unique and wonderful Our time at Trail Breaker Kennel was fantastic, really a “can’t miss” tour. First off the staff are so polite and knowledgeable. The grounds are beautiful with a lake and outdoor kennel, right on a scenic river. And seeing the dogs close up and riding behind them was unforgettable! We did the summer cart ride. Clearly these smart and strong dogs are well-trained and well-cared for. We heard fascinating tales of how mushers and dogs deal with extremes of weather, temperature and exercise during training and racing. We also got a chance to play with sled dog puppies and they were adorable. Though I am still not tempted to become a sled dog musher myself, I loved my experience at Trail Breaker Kennel and recommend it to anyone who wants a truly unique and Alaskan experience. • E1775DTlisam 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Trailbreaker Kennel We were looking for a vibrant and active place yet prefer a relaxing, beautiful setting. Trailbreaker Kennel was the perfect place to visit! When we arrived, we had no idea what to expect. People and dogs were bustling here and there, training and entertaining groups of people. I loved the serenity of the lake in the center of the property. We saw people cooling off in the warm July sun by swimming and kayaking. We were specifically enamored with the puppies, the “beer and puppies” is a really fun way to socialize and give the puppies time to be with people. I enjoyed hearing about how litters of puppies are named with a theme in mind! Little “Allen Wrench” was an adorable puppy that stole the show. The meal under the tent was delicious (yummy lasagna and cookies for dessert), learning about sled dog racing was intriguing, and then of course, finishing off with more puppies! I thought the tributes to Susan Butcher, along with a place to sit by the lake in her memory (beautiful wood carved bench and statues) were heartwarming. All in all, I highly recommend visiting Trailbreaker Kennel. Read more Written August 8, 2023

Bucket list trip.

This was an incredible experience from start to finish. I would definitely do this again. I highly recommend this to anyone considering this. I can't imagine you will find a more dedicated professional who wants to build her business like Lisbet in this area. What a unique experience as I can't imagine any other company letting you drive your own sled and providing such a professional and luxury glamping experience. Highly highly recommend!!

FOR BADASSES ONLY

The overnight tour was the definite highlight of my Alaska trip, and I find myself talking about it all the time. I'm in love with dog sledding...Digging in a little it also seems there's an opportunity to talk about how dog sledding done right nurtures the human-dog connection, and deepens our understanding and respect for the natural world. I certainly experienced that while taking part in the tour.
