The serene environment of the hills surrounded by the magnificent views of the snow-clad Garhwal Himalayas and the alpine climate, indeed make Kanatal the perfect destination for both nature lovers and adventure seekers. Also, if you love to take long road trips, then Kanatal makes for a great pit stop before you travel further north or west.

With our Kanatal travel guide, you can discover this cozy mountain retreat on your way and experience an offbeat mountain destination.

Kanatal is a small village in north-west Uttarakhand, about 38KM from Mussoorie. The hill town is located in the Tehri Garhwal district, on the Chamba-Mussoorie Road at 78 km from Dehradun, the state capital, 12 km from Chamba, and nearly 300 km from Delhi, the national capital.

Kanatal, like its neighboring towns of Mussoorie and Dehradun, also experiences classic alpine weather. The summers are cool and pleasant with warmer days and chilly nights. Winters are extremely cold with temperatures dropping below zero degrees sometimes. There is also occasional snowfall and cold drafts due to the high altitude.

Kanatal’s history dates back decades ago. It is believed that there was once a lake in the same area where the village now sits today. Locally, a lake here is called a “tail”. Over the years the lake dried up and became a settlement. The word kaana in Garhwali means a dry well or pond. And thus, the place got its name.

Being a hidden destination, there are only a handful of accommodation options available at Kanatal. We recommend Pahadi House in Kanatal as it offers local cultural experience and cuisines for guests.

Kanatal Food Guide

Kanatal is a remote hill station and it is still untouched by urbanization, so one does not find any fast food joints and restaurants here. The only restaurants you find here are the ones in the resort and hotels. These restaurants in hotels serve mostly multi-cuisine Chinese, continental or north Indian food.

History of Kanatal

History goes around that Kanatal gained its name from the now dried lake with the same name. To personify the lake existence this hidden hill station was named after the lake itself.

Local lore about Kanatal

The locals believe that once there was an emerald lake in the region by the name of Kanatal, which dried up with time and doesn’t exist anymore. Therefore, the place was named as Kanatal which literally suggests the 'dry lake' in the local language.

Exploring kanatal, tehri lake and dam in garhwal hills.

Kanatal is in Uttarakhand, one of the most popular hill states in India. It is full of aesthetic beauty and is renowned worldwide for being the home of the mighty and divine Himalayas, the sacred rivers of India, stunning landscapes, wildlife, and diverse flora and fauna. No wonder it is the land that helps you gain spiritual enlightenment.

The lush beauty of forests, lakes, mountains, rivers, and alongside legends and stories of different Gods is the reason why the state is given the name “Devbhoomi” or the “Land of Deities”

Kanatal is a beautiful hamlet located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand. It is believed that a visit here gives the best opportunity to feel and experience all that Uttarakhand offers. It is a quaint and serene place that lets you stay close to nature and remain off the grid.

It is a small region located near the popular hill station of Mussoorie. The name Kanatal is derived from two words “Kaana” which means dry and “Tal” meaning Lake. It is believed that there was a lake in the region some hundreds of years ago that subsequently dried up under the intense heat of the sun. The locals then gave the place its present name. Thus, Kanatal means a dry lake.

Banderpoonch Range of Garhwal Himalayas near Kanatal

Kanatal is known for its stunning views of the Banderpoonch Range of the Garhwal Himalayas. It also has forest trails, Apple orchards, and Shaktipeeth Surkanda Devi Temple. Kanatal is also a place where you can observe the rustic life of people in the Garhwal hills.

The Banderpoonch range and major Himalayan peaks are visible from here. As per the legend, Hanuman Ji came here after burning Lanka to douse the flames on his tail. This is how this place got its name Banderpoonch which literally means the tail of a monkey.

Location & How To Reach

Kanatal is located at the height of 2590 meters above sea level in the Tehri Garhwal District of Uttarakhand. It is located around 40 kilometers from Mussoorie, 80 kilometers from Dehradun, and 320 kilometers from Delhi. There are two main routes to reach the destination from Delhi. One is taking the Delhi Meerut Expressway towards Meerut. Take the Meerut Bypass to go on National Highway 344 towards Haridwar and Rishikesh. From Rishikesh take National Highway 7 towards Chamba. From Chamba take the Chamba Mussoorie road for 10 kilometers and you’ll reach Kanatal.

The second route is following the first route till getting on National Highway 344 but changes toward National Highway 307 at Muzzafarnagar. The new highway will go through Roorkee to reach Dehradun. From Dehradun travel to Mussoorie to take the Mussoorie Chamba road. Travel on the road for 30 kilometers passing Landour and Dhanaulti to reach Kanatal.

You can easily travel on any of these two routes using your car. The road condition is good throughout except for Mussoorie – Chamba road which can be a bit narrow at certain points. You can even travel using public transport. However, there are no direct busses to this place. But it is well connected with Uttarakhand Roadways to cities like Dehradun, Mussoorie, Haridwar, and Rishikesh.

Haridwar and Dehradun are two railway stations connected to major parts of the country. Dehradun’s Jolly Grant Airport is the only airport in the region. It is connected to major cities like Delhi and Mumbai. Taxis can be taken from the airport and railway stations. Taxi rates vary highly depending on the weather conditions.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit this place is from April to July in the summers. It is a good place to escape the hot Indian plains. Autumn from September to October is a very pleasant time as well. If you wish to enjoy snow and winters then December and January are the perfect months to visit.

Monsoon must be avoided. Uttarakhand is an ecologically sensitive region and during heavy rains, it becomes very difficult to even reach this place. Landslides and mudflows are very common during rains.

Surkanda devi temple.

Surkanda Devi Temple is one of the many Shaktipeeth Temples spread across India. It is called Surkanda because it’s the place where the head (Sar in Hindi) of Goddess Sati fell. The temple is situated on the tallest peak in Kanatal. To reach the temple one needs to hike on a steep uphill path of around 1.6 kilometers. Although the distance is less the hike is very challenging it takes more than an hour to reach the top. Currently, the Uttarakhand Government is constructing a ropeway to the temple. Which will make it easier to reach. The temple architecture is distinct and similar to Japanese huts.

The temple offers 360-degree views of the Garhwal Himalayas and the Banderpoonch Range. The best time to visit the temple is early morning or late evening, being the tallest peak in the region it is the best place to see the sunrise or sunset.

The dam is located in one of the most geologically sensitive regions and is a modern engineering marvel. The creation of the dam lead to submerging of the town of Old Tehri and a new reservoir spread over an area of more than 70 square kilometers was formed. This reservoir is today known as Tehri Lake and is one of the largest man-made lakes in Asia. To rehabilitate the people of Old Tehri a new town was formed which is known today as “New Tehri”.

The Tehri Dam and Tehri Water Sports Complex are located 30 kilometers away from Kanatal. It is probably the best tourist spot to enjoy when you’re visiting this place. The blue pristine waters of the Bhagirathi river surrounded by hills form an immaculate scenery.

Another activity unique to Tehri Reservoir is that in June when reservoir water is not that cold, they organize Diving trips for tourists. You can also stay in floating houses located in the middle of the reservoir. The rates and booking in the floating houses can be made online.

If you aren’t habituated to fitness training attempt a short distance to make the most of this adventure-packed activity. 3. Rappelling - Kanatal is high on adventure and offers way more than you can imagine. Among the many adventure sports there, another favourite is rappelling. The hilly cliffs there make rock climbing and rappelling an enjoyable activity. If you want some energy-boosting fun, you can choose to do both, but if you’re looking for something simpler, you can simply climb to the top and rappel down gently. Add some fun to it by challenging your friends or siblings to see who can descend the fastest! 4. Jungle Safari - Kanatal’s Kodia Forest makes for a spectacular sightseeing spot, especially when experienced in a jungle safari. The forest has abundant lush greenery and plenty of rich fauna and flora to admire. Various species of birds flutter across as you make your way through the dense forest, and you’ll be lucky to spot wild boar, musk deer, and barking deer on your journey. Prepare to be awed by what lies before you because Kodia Forest is paradise for photographers as well as nature and animal lovers!

Which are the places to see in Kanatal?

1. Kodia Forest - If you’re travelling with friends or family to Kanatal and looking for a great picnic spot, look no further. Kodia Forest isn’t just a popular trekking or safari destination, but a great spot for relaxing, too. The lush greenery, the mountains beyond and the deep valleys make for picturesque beauty. Amidst expansive vegetation lie natural springs that gurgle along the jungle trails as you make your way to the destination. Prepare to be greeted by rare wild animals and brightly coloured birds while you spend a well-rested afternoon there. 2. Tehri Lake - At an elevation of 1700 metres, Tehri Lake is a beautiful sight to witness. This artificial dam reservoir was created to divert water from the Bhagirathi River to the reservoir, and it soon gained popularity as a boating destination among locals and tourists. With the serenity of the lake coupled with the majestic mountains in the background, you feel like you’re residing in the lap of nature. 3. New Tehri - Being the only planned city in Uttarakhand gives New Tehri its name, since it is the most recent development near Kanatal. Home to the Tehri Dam and the Tehri Lake, formed by the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers, New Tehri is a beautiful place to explore. This is among the only places in Kanatal to offer an extensive range of watersports including jet skiing, which is rarely found elsewhere in Uttarakhand. Along with watersports, New Tehri is also dotted with some beautiful temples, and visual vistas, making sure it has something for everyone to enjoy! 4. Surkanda Devi Temple - One of the oldest and unmissable sights in Kanatal is the ancient Surkanda Devi Temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is believed that when the Goddess died, her husband Lord Shiva, carried her corpse back to Kailash which is when her head fell off her body and fell to the spot where the temple was later built. This incident gave the temple its name, Sirkandha, which gradually came to be known as Surkanda. Pilgrims from across the country visit this temple especially during Ganga Dussehra and Navratri to witness the array of colours and lights that await! The breathtaking views of the Himalayas across and the sprawling greenery around simply adds to the beauty of this holy spot. 5. Dhanaulti - Often called the Icy Heaven, Dhanaulti is primarily popular for a weekend getaway, especially during the winters. Perched at a height of more than 2200 metres, this pristine hill station is known for its tranquil sceneries and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Being in close proximity to frequented tourist destinations like Mussoorie, Chamba, and even Delhi, most tourists prefer taking a quick stopover here to experience the charm of Dhanaulti. In the winters, the snow-laden roads lined with rhododendron, deodar, and oak are a sight right out of a fairytale! 6. Eco Park - Stretched out across 13 hectares of land and located at a height of 7800 metres, Eco Park is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Dhanaulti. Enveloped by deodar and oak trees, the park is equipped with a huge playground where kids can keep themselves entertained for hours, while adults relax on the cool green grasses. What adds to the beauty of the Eco Park is the sapling plantation tradition, where visitors can plant a sapling in memory of a loved one, adding a unique, personal touch to this beautiful location!
