Sabi Sands Lodges Reservations - Sabi Sands Game Reserve - South Africa

Ulusaba Private Game Reserve

Ulusaba private game reserve - sabi sands game reserve.

Ulusaba private game reserve is situated in the world renowned Sabi Sands game reserve within the greater Kruger National Park in South Africa. It's Sir Richard Branson’s interpretation of what a South African Safari should be. The name Ulusaba means ‘place of little fear’, so named because the koppie, or hill, on which Rock Lodge sits provided the ancient Shangaan tribal warriors with the perfect lookout point.

Ulusaba has 21 rooms and suites spread over two lodges: Rock Lodge, including the beautiful Cliff Lodge , and Safari Lodge. Ulusaba game reserve enjoys an incredible location within the Sabi Sands game reserve .  Anyone who’s been on safari before knows that no two game drives are ever the same! There are two daily game drives at Ulusaba game reserve, one leaving early in the morning and one leaving late afternoon, each lasting around three hours.

Times will vary depending on the season, but you should always keep your eyes peeled for the Big 5!   You’ll traverse over 13,500 hectares of private reserve with your dedicated Ranger and Tracker who will tailor your game drive just for you!

Ulusaba - The Perfect Family Safari

Ulusaba private game reserve is a family-friendly safari destination and most of our staff are Shangaan and hail from the communities that border the game reserve. Shangaans are celebrated for their dancing and singing and a rich musical heritage.

Ulusaba was voted as the number 1 resort in Africa in the Condé Nast Traveler Reader's Awards in 2016 and was ranked as the third best resort in the world!

Things to remember on game drives @ Ulusaba!

> A good camera, although take care when using a flash – some of the animals aren’t particularly keen. Just ask your Ranger and Tracker for guidance – they’re on good terms with all our neighbours.

> Binoculars. We have a pair on each game vehicle to share, but if you’ve got your own you should certainly bring them.

> Always bring sunglasses, and in the winter months a sweater or fleece, especially in the evenings. We provide blankets and hot water bottles in winter if it’s cold, and there are also ponchos if it is raining.

> It’s best to wear pale and neutral colors when on game drives so not to attract the animals’ attention any more than strictly necessary!

> Please do not bring your mobile phone with you on game drives – we have radios in the cars to contact Ulusaba or the Sabi Sand authorities in case of an emergency

If you are planning a trip to S.A. And want to spend time in the bush, then Sabi Sands is a must. We have been travelling to to South Africa every year for the past 12 years and stayed at many game reserves including the Krugar many times. This year we saved up hard and achieved our dream, to stay in Sabi Sands. All that I can say it's Well Worth every penny, the reserve is just something else! It's the best and it's a must, forget the rest push the the boat out and and stay at in Sabi Sands.. We chose Elephant Plains due to our budget. It was wonderful food fantastic, staff brilliant, service first class. We saw the big five for the the first time in 12 years.... So if you are looking for a safari holiday then look no further this place is the best. Memories we will never forget.

After spending 2 nights at the Dulini River Lodge we spent 2 nights at the Dulini Lodge. Even though both Lodges are in the same Reserve and very close they offer a different athmosphere. The Dulini Lodge gives you a stronger "Africa feeling" in terms of decoration and setup in my view.

The bungalows are very spacious and well equipped. The welcome is kind and warm and the staff is amazing. They provided me with a special birthday dinner which made the stay even more memorable.

The game drives with the Ranger Fred and our tracker May where an experience. We saw a lot and as haveing been on Safari before we received so much more indepth information since we did not have to worry about seeing all the big 5 (which we saw anyway).

Will try to be back whenever possible

We just came back from our first ever safari trip. We went not knowing what to expect. After our first game drive, we got to know why Sabi Sands Lodges are the best when it comes to big five game viewing. We managed to view all of the big five on one day.

The accommodation was perfect and the staff were exceptionally friendly. We are hooked, we will certainly visit Sabi Sabi again, very soon.

This was a great experience overall. The resort was nice and homely. Our ranger Kelsey and tracker Bennett were very knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions that we had. The game drives were exciting and the search for the leopard was one of the highlights of the trip. The rooms were spacious, and the food was almost unending. The only downside, and understandably so, was the inability to move from one room to another, after dark. While our sons were older and able to stay on their own, families with slightly younger children may have to stay in one chalet. Strongly recommend it!!

Our family just spend 3 days in the Cottage. The safaris were outstanding led by our intelligent and passionate guide Michael. We saw so much and learnt so much in the "Land That Time Forgot". Leopard with Waterbuck kill, wild dogs, Lion and Elephant swimming and wrestling in a dam and so much more!! The camp manager Gary was so welcoming and friendly. His enthusiasm for the bush is infectious. Thanks for a wonderful time in a special place. Also thanks for arranging a truly unique bat sighting!!!! Stayed May 2017, travelled with family

Highly recommended. Amazing in many ways. Great safari experience. Unsurpassed food. Kind staff. Two safaris a day for three days. One extra walking safari midday. Excellent game viewing. Night time star gazing by the fire. Trip to the village. Great amenities. Boma, Observation points. Nice little library. The staff will walk you to your cabin at night. Our first time here was 2006 but this is the place to come for the best safari lodge experience. This is the place to come back to.

This was a perfect place for a safari. We stayed in one of the two suites, and this was perfect. The game drives were so exiting. Of 8 game drives we saw leopards at 7 of them. The staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was nice. The skills of the tracker and ranger was fantastic. It was so nice to follow how they read the tracks in the sand and bushes. We saw the big 5 and a lot more. If would go back? YES

We had a great overall experience at Mala Mala. We saw abundant animals and several exciting interactions between them. Our guide was knowledgeable and nice (the others in our group had a guide who had had incredible intuition for finding animals and we benefited from it). The rooms are nice, beautiful and comfortable. The food was good/okay... We were there for three nights and it seemed like there were a lot of repeats between the meals. The staff were all friendly and the customer service was great!

Fabulous three days at Idube Game Reserve. Lovely people. amazing food. So many highlights. But one stood out. When we surprised a rhino and it charged our Land Cruiser, leave it to our guide, Brogan, to take care of business. With a sharp, "OY!", the rhino stopped it charge, turn around and trotted back to its mate. Note that the wifi was only available in the office when we went, but it's due for an upgrade any date. Pro-tip: No cell coverage, but the office has a cell tower booster. Turn off your wifi, and your phone will pick up the cell booster if you have a local phone or international plan

Everything wonderful, just come back from part of Titan Tour. We saw the big five and so much more. Couldn't fault it and would love to go back. You have to be there to believe how good it is, and how close you get to what is after all wild animals. I could have almost touched one of the lions we saw!!

Amazing game sightings, the best I've had (and it is always good), our Ranger and Tracker were great fun and very knowledgable, the staff were on the ball and the atmosphere and mood relaxed and attentive. It's hard to put into words what a wonderful place this is , even before you arrive the staff are extremely helpful with information and when you arrive they make you feel part of the lodge community not just a guest (truly welcoming).

The staff are genuinely interested in your adventure and happiness joining in stories and experiences of each game drive .Be prepared for the early starts 5.30 am game drive however believe me this is the best time of the day to see the animals and is a magical time to see the bush. The lodge and rooms are to a very high standard with all rooms having great views and the best bit being no fences !!!! YOU REALLY ARE IN THE BUSH 🙂 . This is without doubt a luxury Safari

We absolutely loved this resort. The staff is so warm and welcoming, the rooms and public areas are beautifully and comfortably decorated, the food was delicious (I'm a San Francisco foodie pescetarian and absolutely loved the food/presentation), and the game drives were unforgettable. Don't miss the bush walk--we walked through a field of butterflies, saw all kinds of animal tracks, and enjoyed a different view of the landscape we'd been driving through all week. I would also highly recommend visiting the Thornybush Community Project gardens with Gavin, where some of the beautiful food served in Sabi Sand resorts is grown by local women as part of a community collective. We also visited a school, which had an incredible impact on us. I loved Simbambili--a little piece of my heart is still there

Loved our time at Nkorho. Our guide, Matt, and tracker, David, were extremely professional and knowledgeable. The safari rides were incredible and we certainly saw everything we came to see. The entire staff works hard to ensure a great experience for their guests. Our suite was great, very clean and comfortable . The swing was cozy on the front deck! Enjoyed our meals and evenings in the bar. Thanks to all for a great time!

My daughter and I spent 3 nights at Notten's in April 2017 and we loved everything about it! We loved the fact that we were teamed up with the same driver/tracker/four other guests in the same car over the course of all the days - we had such fun together and really got involved in trying to spot the animals. And we were rewarded with multiple leopard sightings and the other big 5, as well as all the other beautiful animals - zebra, giraffes, kudu, impala etc - and many birds. The rooms - including outdoor shower, dining area, food, pool, gift shop, massage, the lovely candle light (and lack of electric lighting) and special sundowner by the river were all fabulous. We felt so relaxed and welcomed. The staff were professional and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble. They went the extra mile to engage with my 9 year old daughter. This place suited us perfectly. It was top class without being pretentious. Worth every penny - and actually better value than some other lodges. Recommended without hesitation. We hope to return one day. Thank you to all - Dale, Suzie, Gift, Desmond, Tulani, Riddent, Joe and everyone else (sorry if names are miss-spelt).

Ulusaba offers a superb wilderness experience. It is one of the private reserves within the greater Sabi Sand Game Reserve and shares open borders with the widely acclaimed Kruger National Park. Wildlife viewing is excellent and seeing the Big Five is emphasized. All big cats are commonly spotted, including the notoriously shy leopard. Ulusaba is owned by Sir Richard Branson, the founder of the Virgin Group. The reserve has two 5-star lodges different in style and with different rates. Ulusaba is relatively small but has traversing rights with seven other properties in the west of Sabi Sands. It is possible to travel freely between them, but it can get crowded at wildlife sightings. This can cause congestion and time pressure since only three vehicles are allowed at any given time.

Pros & Cons

  • Wildlife is plentiful, and the Big Five is commonly seen
  • Close-up viewing of animals with off-road driving
  • Excellent guides offer day and night drives and walks
  • Expensive, fully inclusive safari packages are the only options
  • Situated in a part of Sabi Sands where it can get crowded
  • Concentration on flagship species over others

There is excellent wildlife viewing in Ulusaba. Cheetah and all high-profile safari animals are easily found, including the Big Five . Leopard, normally very shy, are very relaxed in Sabi Sands and sightings of them are nearly guaranteed. Chacma baboon , vervet monkey , warthog , banded and dwarf mongoose and the secretive bushbuck are all common and worth observing.

Ulusaba’s terrain is comprised of woodland savannah. Thick foliage is present but seldom interferes with wildlife viewing. Rangers with great tracking skills and the ability to drive off-road, make the foliage an easy obstacle to overcome.

Ulusaba Game Reserve

Kruger national park , south africa, about ulusaba game reserve.

Ulusaba, a Shangaan term meaning ‘Place of Little Fear’, gets its name from the ancient rocky outcrops originally used by warriors as a lookout point, now home to Ulusaba’s Rock Lodge.

Ulusaba, Sir Richard Branson’s luxury safari game lodge situated in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve, is the perfect destination for those looking to experience the African bush in a more contemporary way. Three incredible lodges, Safari Lodge, Rock Lodge and Cliff Lodge, offer five-star, award-winning accommodation in the Kruger Park with a range of activities to keep guests well entertained.

From safari game drives, bush walks, spa treatments and wine tastings, Ulusaba Game Reserve also has a magnificent Bush Observatory for those who are eager to star gaze in style.

Children of all ages are welcome at Ulusaba, with the exception of Safari Lodge allowing no children under 12. Children are endearingly called Cubs, and can enjoy a range of special age-appropriate, supervised activities in the Cub’s Club.

Why We Love Ulusaba Game Reserve

  • The Bush Observatory is a must! Guests can enjoy stargazing while the rangers point out and discuss various constellations.
  • Ulusaba’s Pride ‘n Purpose organisations allow guests to go a step further and volunteer their time in one of the hands-on projects tailored to a passion or skill of the gust themselves.
  • Waking up before dawn to embark on an early morning game drive is a truly magnificent experience. Guests can also enjoy a bush breakfast in the African wild.

Tripadvisor comments Ulusaba Safari Lodge

Fabulous. Great service, great food, great staff, great rooms. Our Ranger Greg was the loveliest man and we really enjoyed getting to know him as well as our tracker Joesph. This is a real personal non intrusive place with amazing services. One of the best places i think i will stay in my life. My only one negative thing is that they did not know it was our honeymoon and we had booked the honeymoon package. The communication must have slipped. Apart from this, this is a wonderful place, you see great animals, drink nice wine, eat great and plenty food and meet really nice people whilst you are there. I would go again and hopefully will return soon! LauritaLondon from London, UK
I just returned from a fabulous vacation in South Africa, highlighted at the end by 6 nights at Ulusaba Safari Lodge. It's funny how the reviews differ, most people love it, a few hate it. I'm in the love category. Service was fabulous, but not over the top where they don't leave you alone. You are told to just make yourself at home, and that's what it was like. Dane was like your college friend behind the bar, Kim was very friendly and took care of everything. PJ was an exuberant chef, every night he came out to tell us what he had prepared with a big smile on his face, and his talent was very evident. Knox and the rest of the servers were very professional and warm. And our team of Steve and Tulani on the game drives were extremely knowledgeable and calm. We saw everything imaginable and more. I felt very safe with them. They do team you up with a few strangers, but we had a great group and became good friends. That's part of the experience. It's not like going to summer camp, it's just relaxing in a magical place with some good friends. cindyeo from Massachusetts

About Sabi Sand Game Reserve

Adjacent to the world-renowned Kruger National Park, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is famed for its intimate wildlife encounters, particularly leopard viewing. Home to a host of animals, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), the Sabi Sand is part of a conservation area that covers over two million hectares (almost five million acres), an area equivalent to the state of New Jersey.

With no boundary fences between the Sabi Sand and the Kruger National Park, this reserve benefits from the great diversity of animals found in one of the richest wildlife areas on the African continent, along with the additional benefits experienced on a private game reserve.

Game drives traverse an area of 10, 500 hectares (26, 000 acres) and strict vehicle limits at sightings ensure the exclusivity of the game viewing experience. Sensitive off-road driving ensures that guests have the best possible view of any exceptional sighting and rangers are constantly in touch with each other to keep track of animal movements.

A day on safari – Ulusaba, Sabi Sand

  • September 17, 2021
  • Updated: July 6, 2022

South Africa safari

What happens during a ‘typical’ day in a game reserve?

You’ve booked your (perhaps first ever) safari and are raring to go and spot the famous Big Five – but might still be wondering what actually happens during a ‘typical’ day in a game reserve. It’s fair to say that most game lodges adhere to certain itineraries when it comes to safari schedules and the best time to observe wildlife – which is not to say however that they’re all the same, far from it. Levalux Founder Bibiana Smith recently stayed at two wildly different but equally riveting game lodges, Ulusaba in Sabi Sand and RockFig in the Timbavati, and shares a first-hand account of her experiences at both. Here’s what to expect at Ulusaba – for her account of RockFig, click here.

The 13,500-hectare Ulusaba Private Reserve, one of the top luxury safari lodges in South Africa ,  is surrounded by the larger Sabi Sand Reserve – itself renowned as one of the best places in South Africa for wildlife viewing, thanks to many waterholes and dams that function as an important water source for large herds of animals throughout the year. That, coupled with the fact that your landlord is Richard Branson (the reserve is owned by Virgin Limited), should give you an indication as to what to expect on a safari trip to Ulusaba.

Table of Contents

Located in the bush under ancient trees you really get the feeling of being in the heart of the bush here, with the chance to watch thirsty animals stroll past your deck on their way to the nearby waterhole.

Virgin Limited Edition, Ulusaba, Safari Suite

Safari Lodge has 10 tree-house-style suites, some of them only accessible via rope swing bridges. The lodge caters to different types of travellers – the interconnecting rooms are perfect for families with kids over 12, while the tucked-away Treehouse Suite overlooking the nearby Xikwenga Dam is a secluded haven for honeymooners. For the ultimate luxury, book the Safari Suite, which comes with its own walled garden and boma fire pit – or rent the entire lodge on an exclusive basis!

Here’s what to expect during your stay at Safari Lodge

Stay at safari lodge - late afternoon.

20210701_083845-2 2

“an ice-cold beer or G&T from your safari-vehicle-turned-pop-up-bar, enjoyed in a scenic location in the middle of nowhere “

Stay at safari lodge - Evening

Stay at safari lodge - ( very early) morning, stay at safari lodge - daytime, what we loved about ulusaba:.

The game drive experience was truly impressive, with wonderful sightings throughout. If this is your first safari, and you’re especially keen on leopards, a stay here will prove to be magical.

Game viewing from the comfort of your lounger. Our room offered mesmerising views of the animals as they stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole.

The sheer amount of activities at the lodge, including swimming, a gym, spa, tennis, stargazing…

The choice of lodges. We loved Safari Lodge for its style and location, but were also taken by the hillside Rock Lodge during a site inspection – the views from the top were simply phenomenal (its location was once a lookout point for Shangaan warriors – ulusaba means ‘place of little fear’). Cliff Lodge meanwhile is the most exclusive offering, with just two multi-level suites that can sleep five adults and four children in total.

We were amazed by the architecture and the fact that no room is the same at Ulusaba. Each one has its own style, layout and design – my personal favourite was the master suite at Rock Lodge.
