How much is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour merch?

Here's the list of everything you can buy at the merch stand on the Eras Tour:

  • Crewneck sweater - $65
  • Quarter-zip Pullover - $65
  • Long sleeve t-shirt - $55

Can you buy Eras Tour merch on Taylor Swift's website?

There's a handful of items in the merch truck that are pretty much the same as what Taylor is selling on her website. The black and beige t-shirts are currently available to buy on Taylor's merch site, as well as the Eras 'bejeweled' bracelet. There's also variations on several of the hoodies available too.

Unfortunately, the viral blue crewneck sweater that everyone has been scrambling to get their hands on is not available to buy online. The sweaters are so popular that fans are also warning others that people without tickets have been queuing up to buy them in bulk in order to sell online at a much, much higher price.

You can buy a similar hooded version of it online, though. And tbh, it looks just as great!

There's also different items on Taylor's website that are not available at the merch truck or any of the booths inside.

Can you buy Eras Tour merch inside the stadium?

Yep, according to reports from fans, there's also merch stands inside the stadiums too so you don't have to spend your time queuing in the long lines outside.

However, the booths inside will not have the same wide variety of items that the truck outside has. Fans have been able to get their hands on the cheaper items, such as water bottles, tote bags, posters and tour tees, but have had little luck finding the coveted sweaters and hoodies inside the venue.

What time does the Eras Tour merch truck stand open?

Based on several reports from fans who have already attended Taylor's shows, the merch truck opens at around 10am and closes between 6 and 7pm before the show begins.

Times may vary depending on the city though, so make sure you check the stadium's Twitter feed, and keep an eye on fellow Swifties who may be sharing any updates. (The truck also arrived a day early in Las Vegas giving fans the chance to get their merch the day before the concert.)

Taylor's first support act starts around 6:30pm and Taylor takes to the stage around 8pm. So if you want to make sure you're ready and in your seat with plenty of time to spare before Taylor kicks things off, make sure you plan ahead for the long queues at the merch truck!

There is new Eras Tour merch for Taylor Swift's international shows in 2024.

Your Guide To Getting Taylor Swift Eras Tour Merch In 2024

Every tortured poet needs a blue crewneck.

With the international leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour kicking off on Feb. 7 in Tokyo, the quest for copping the viral blue crewneck has officially begun again. Basically, “look what you made me do” has a whole new meaning as Swifties in Japan are braving the winter weather to get their hands on merch like Eras Tour tees and hoodies.

In addition to waiting in lines almost as long as Swift’s 44-song setlist , heavy snowfall and winds are making it a struggle for fans like TikToker @weeenameco to pick up merch before their show.

To help with demand, Eras Tour merch trucks and stands have been opening up days before Swift takes the stage in each city. Going early is the best opportunity for Swifties to get exclusive Eras Tour merch before it sells out. And according to TikToker @jizellemaia, once an item, like the viral blue crewneck, sells out in your city, they are not restocking .

To give you an idea of how popular some Eras Tour merch is, the $65 blue Eras Tour sweatshirt was so popular that resellers were listing it for over $400 online. After everything fans have already had to deal with just trying to get tickets to The Eras Tour , there should be no bad blood getting merch as well. To avoid your day going down in flames, here’s how to make the most of your time at The Eras Tour, figure out which merch items are worth getting, and know what’s new in 2024.

You Can Usually Find Eras Tour Merch Days Before Your Show

Taylor Swift Eras Tour merch is being sold outside venues.

“Take advantage of early merch” is one of @jizellemaia’s top tips for the Eras Tour, as everything is only available while supplies last. Times may vary from city to city, so your best bet is to keep an eye on Twitter, TikTok, or your stadium’s website for any updates. The merch booth in Japan opened two days before the first show at the Tokyo Dome on Feb. 5.

Since Eras Tour merch is typically found outside the venue, you don’t need a ticket to the show in order to shop. Select items will also be available inside for ticket holders the day of the show, but not every booth may have what you’re looking for if supplies are running low. I attended the second show in Las Vegas, and the merch table I went to inside the stadium wasn’t carrying the blue crewneck or even the show poster that’s exclusive to each city.

International Eras Tour Prices Are Relatively The Same

The prices of the Taylor Swift Eras Tour merch is the same internationally.

Before going to the Eras Tour merch truck or booth, here is a breakdown of the prices to see if it’s in your budget:

  • Hoodies — $75
  • Crewneck — $65
  • Quarter Zip Pullover — $65
  • Long Sleeve T-Shirt — $55
  • T-Shirts — $45
  • Canvas Tapestry — $35
  • Bracelet — $35
  • Show Poster — $30
  • Tote Bag — $30
  • Water Bottle — $25
  • Glow Baton — $15
  • Towel — $17

While prices appear to be the same internationally as they were in the U.S., currency conversion could work in your favor here, depending on the country. For example, the blue crewneck was $65 in the U.S., but is closer to $64 in Japan. Saving a dollar is worth it when being a Swiftie is so expensive .

The International Leg Has New Eras Tour Merch

The Eras Tour international dates have new merch items, like a towel and tote bag.

While most of the Eras Tour merch for 2024 looks to be about the same — minus the change in city names and year — there are a few new items that Swifties peeped in @weeenameco’s TikTok. The first is a brand-new Eras Tour tote bag for around $27 — cheaper than the previous $30 one. Instead of a black tote bag with a colorful Eras Tour logo and the names of the U.S. tour cities, this international version is cream with a black logo on the front and the international cities on the back.

The second new item is a $17 Eras Tour towel that one fan on X, formerly Twitter, has already said they need “so bad.” It appears to be thin, so it’s not something you’d want to take with you to lounge on at the beach. Since these shows are taking place in the winter rather than the summer, it looks like the tie-dye tank has been removed as well, along with the white Eras Tour tee.

While it was possible to shop plenty of cute Eras Tour merch online last year, Swift’s online store is just in its The Tortured Poets Department era right now. So, going to the venue early is your best bet for getting Eras Tour merch. You could also look for Eras Tour crewneck dupes on Etsy, if you’d rather shop from your cozy, warm couch at home. Since anyone can go to these merch stands and most of these items have been available for almost a year, it kind of takes away the exclusivity anyway.

This slight fade is related to the product’s distressed, vintage look.

Also, Swifties have expressed their disappointment in the quality of the merch before. One specific design, featuring photos of Swift from different phases of her career on items like the aforementioned tote bag, has been known to fade. Swift’s team has come out saying this is an intentional style choice. “This slight fade is related to the product’s distressed, vintage look,” read a statement on Swift’s official online store .

Their statement also called out how fans should care for the items post-purchase, adding, “Please also note it is important to follow product care instructions as listed on the product label when washing and drying your items, to best protect and maintain the product’s look and feel.”

Ultimately, if you just want something to say, “I was there,” finding some of the less popular tour-exclusive items like the water bottle are much easier the day of your show. When I went to the Eras Tour, I only waited about 20 minutes at a booth right past security and was able to get the water bottle, baton, and shirt I wanted. Another booth around the corner had a much shorter line with the tote bag and show poster. There was also a main merch table right inside the stadium that still had everything.

Tips For Getting The Eras Tour Merch You Really Want

A Swiftie showed up early to get Taylor Swift Eras Tour merch in Tokyo, Japan.

If popular merch items are a priority for you, I recommend showing up early when doors open and trying to get to the main table inside ASAP rather than waiting hours for the truck or booth outside. You can avoid some of the cold weather by going inside the venue, but remember to bring Eras Tour essentials with you if you do plan to camp out.

For anyone waiting for the merch outside, try to show up as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of getting what you want before it sells out. Be sure to check the inventory before stepping in line as well. They tend to run out of certain sizes early, and you don’t want to get to the front only to realize they don’t have what you need anymore.

If you do get the wrong size and you find another merch table that has the right one, Jordan Walker ( @fairytaleswift ) told Elite Daily that it’s possible to exchange. “We went to another [table] and they simply swapped sizes, so that was great,” she shared. Just give yourself plenty of time before the show to get all the merch you want. Swift’s set has been starting around 8 p.m., so you have from doors open till then to make all the purchases you need.

Taylor Swift onstage for opening night of "The Eras Tour" on March 17 in Glendale, Arizona.

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour is a hit — and so is her merch.

The singer’s Pittsburgh concert earlier this month drew the largest crowd in the Acrisure Stadium venue’s history , and Fortune reports that the worldwide tour could possibly “generate $4.6 billion in consumer spending in the U.S. alone.”

Along with securing hard-to-purchase tickets to Swift ‘s tour and memorizing the artist’s top-hits discography, many fans are equally determined to score official merchandise, sometimes standing in line for hours.

Here, WWD showcases a guide to Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour merchandise, including how to navigate the site, prices and more.

Eras Tour merch

Taylor Swift’s official merchandise is divided into two categories: Album Shops and All Merchandise. The first option allows fans to purchase products according to a specific Swift album, as the singer has released more than 200 songs and 10 albums throughout her career.

Fearless shop, Red shop and the 1989 shop are among the categories offered with merchandise items that cater to the theme of that particular body of work.

The Midnights shop follows the singer’s ’70s album theme, offering ringer-style T-shirts ($45), retro duffel bags with color-blocked red and beige woven straps ($75) and vinyl editions of the “Midnights” album offered in vintage colors ($29.99) including jade, mahogany and moonstone blue.

There’s even an “Eras Tour” collection, which offers T-shirts, photo postcards ($10), pins and totes showcasing some of Swift’s well-known looks throughout the tour.

The Fearless shop, which is based on Swift’s re-recorded version of the project, includes the Fearless Vault Globe with engraving and a snow globe inside ($75).

The next show in Swift’s Eras Tour is scheduled for Friday in Minneapolis, featuring Girl in Red and Gracie Abrams.

Was Taylor Swift's Eras Merch Worth It Despite Its Insane Price?

Devoted Swifties braved waiting in line for hours, sometimes even camping overnight, all for the chance to score some Eras-themed merchandise.

  • Taylor Swift's Eras Tour faced ticket chaos and inflated resale prices.
  • Fans waited in long lines and camped overnight to buy Eras-themed merchandise.
  • Despite the high prices, some fans were disappointed with the quality of the merchandise.

It's no secret that Taylor Swift pulled out all the stops to transform her Eras Tour into an unforgettable spectacle. From those glitzy one-of-a-kind outfits to never-heard-before music , the recently concluded US-leg of the tour was exhilarating, to say the least. But away from the glitz, the tour has faced its own set of unexpected hiccups.

Chaos reigned when the tour tickets dropped on Ticketmaster in November 2022. Tickets, already steeply priced, vanished in a flash, only to reappear on the resale market at astronomical rates. This left many, including those who had jumped through hoops to join Taylor Swift Tix by Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program , either locked out or forced to empty their wallets to secure a seat .

And if you were one of the lucky ones who made it to a concert, you still had to queue for hours and shell out up to a whopping $75 for Eras-themed merchandise. So, was having a memento of the phenomenal tour worth it, despite the insane price tag?

Fans Had To Wait In Line For Hours To Buy Taylor Swift’s Insanely Priced Eras Tour Merch

Taylor Swift's record-breaking Eras Tour has been sweeping the nation for most of the year. Despite the absolute chaos that erupted when tickets went on sale back in November 2022, tour venues were swarming with legions of devoted fans.

Some couldn't snag tickets, so they settled for parking outside the venues just to soak up a bit of the Eras magic.

Taylor Swift

But Taylor's electrifying performances weren't the sole magnet for these die-hard fans. Since the tour's epic kick-off in March, devoted Swift-heads braved waiting in line for hours, sometimes even camping overnight, all for the chance to score some Eras-themed merchandise.

In Texas, queues extended around an entire block, and over in Cincinnati, fans camped outdoors, braving the elements for hours just to get first pick when the highly coveted merch finally went up on sale the next morning.

The widespread frenzy even earned Swift a mention in Universal Music Group’s annual earnings call .

“Turning now to Merchandising. Merchandising revenue grew 12% in the quarter, with growth in direct-to-consumer revenue, fueled by a strong performance from Taylor Swift, more than offsetting a decline in touring revenue,” Boyd Muir, UMG's chief financial officer, said on the call.

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Merch Didn’t Exactly Come Cheap

Waiting in line for hours, sometimes under the scorching sun, wasn't the only hurdle fans had to overcome to get their hands on Eras tour merch. Like the tickets, Eras-themed merchandise didn't come cheap.

According to Elite Daily, hoodies came in at a jaw-dropping $75, crewnecks and quarter zip pullovers at a cool $65 each, long sleeve t-shirts clocked in at $55, and regular t-shirts at $45.

Taylor Swift's Tours Have Been Outrageous And Filled With Controversies- The Truth About What Really Happened Behind The Scenes

Some fans questioned the frenzy, arguing that the merchandise could easily be bought from Swift's online store. “Taylor put merch online for a reason,” one fan pointed out according to the Independent .

“Let’s not sit outside for a T-shirt. Also, the reason artists put their merch online is for those who didn’t go to a show, if you don’t have tickets to an Eras tour show don’t wait outside and make the line longer for those going to the show.”

RELATED: Taylor Swift Has A Framed Photo Of This Moment In Her Career To Stay Motivated (And Angry)

However, as it turns out, the Eras merch catalog also included show-exclusive items that fans could only snatch up at the stadiums.

The hottest commodity? The Eras Tour blue crewneck.

This viral $45 item seemed to vanish into thin air almost as soon as it hit the stadium shelves, leaving fans to contend with the resale market, where the once-in-a-lifetime crewneck was boldly commanding prices north of $400.

Was Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Merch Worth The Price?

After investing a considerable sum and enduring hours of outdoor camping, devoted Swifties left with a cherished memento of one of the greatest tours in history. Regrettably, the ensuing euphoria later gave way to widespread disappointment. According to Vulture, despite the hefty price tag, the hyped-up merchandise fell short of expectations.

“After one wash, the print was horribly faded to the point Taylor’s face on the print was unrecognizable,” a fan who waited in line for more than five hours to purchase a gray quarter-zip sweatshirt told Vulture.

“It was also 65 dollars, which I feel like is more than enough for it to hold up. It’s super disappointing that it looks this bad.”

Taylor Swift Eras tour

Some users even resorted to unconventional hacks like ditching the wash and ironing the merch under parchment paper to preserve the delicate print. However, these DIY tricks weren’t popular with some users, who felt that, considering the insane price, such glaring quality issues were completely unacceptable.

"To everyone saying I should have pressed it on with parchment paper, why should we be the ones to preserve a $50 shirt?" TikTok user raighsunshine pointed out . "I did everything I normally do to take care of my clothes, and it still faded a TON."

Was Taylor Swift's Eras Merch Worth It Despite It's Insane Price_

After being bombarded with complaints from irate fans, Swift's team attempted to smooth things over by suggesting that the merchandise was designed to intentionally fade a bit after washing to achieve a 'vintage' aesthetic.

“Due to the particular ink curing process used on certain Tour Collection products, after washing your merchandise you may see a faint fade on the product print,” the statement read. “This slight fade is related to the product’s distressed, vintage look. Please also note it is important to follow product care instructions as listed on the product label when washing and drying your items, to best protect and maintain the product’s look and feel.”

That said, there might be some reprieve for fans whose merch was irreparably damaged after washing. According to Teen Vogue , the statement from Swift’s team offered fans who’d witnessed significant alterations in their merchandise after washing the option of arranging for a replacement.

Along with the merch drop, Swift also released a sneak peek of the music video for "Fortnight," the first single on her album that features Post Malone. The post on X, formerly known as Twitter, noted the music video will release at 8 p.m. ET on Friday.

"At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings," the post read. "Album tonight. Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et."

Swift starred alongside Malone in the snippet of her upcoming music video for "Fortnight," which means 14 days or two weeks of time.

When does Taylor Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department' come out?

Taylor Swift's 11th album, "The Tortured Poets Department," releases at 12 a.m. ET on Friday, April 19.

Swift originally announced the album after winning her 13th Grammy on Feb. 4.

Taylor Swift's 'The Tortured Poets Department' will be boon for independent record stores

Taylor Swift released her highly anticipated eleventh album Friday, and it is expected to be a boon for record stores.

The pop star's "The Tortured Poets Department" (TTPD) album made its official debut overnight, roughly 2½ months after she revealed her plans to release it.

Adrian Lee, purchaser for The Sound Garden in Baltimore, told FOX Business Friday the store has "had a number of people interested in purchasing" all four exclusive vinyl variants of Swift’s new album and "ended up with hundreds of pre-orders" for TTPD.

The album is also expected to help drive more sales for The Sound Garden, according to Lee.

"She’s one of the biggest superstars in the world, and when she releases new music, it’s certainly going to contribute to increased traffic in the store," Lee said.

Her releases also come with a "halo effect" that has indie record stores like The Sound Garden getting customers "coming in to shop and buying other things while they’re there," according to Lee.

Doyle Davis, co-owner of Grimey’s New & Preloved Music in Nashville, also spoke to FOX Business about the release of "TTPD" and its expected impact.

"This is a unique situation because we’ve got this hugely anticipated Taylor Swift release, which is always a big deal every time she has one," he said. "And then tomorrow is Record Store Day, which traditionally is far and away our biggest day of the entire year."

Record Store Day takes place every year, typically on the third Saturday in April, promoting indie record stores and often involving special artist releases .

TAYLOR SWIFT IS OFFICIALLY PART OF THE FORBES ANNUAL BILLIONAIRES LIST

"We’re gonna have an amazing weekend, hands down regardless, but having the Taylor Swift release on top of it, that makes it a double whammy, if you will, of huge demand drivers to bring customers over to the store," Davis said.

Swift’s album sales are "impactful" for Grimey’s every day, her past records often appearing among the store’s top-25 bestsellers each week. But Davis attributed the store's success to its wide selection. He also told FOX Business the store ordered "hundreds" of "TTPD" copies ahead of its release in anticipation of high demand.

" Taylor Swift’s releases are usually the biggest releases of the week," said Chris Brown, vice president of finance for Bull Moose Music and the creator of Record Store Day. "We [Bull Moose] get a large sales boost whenever she releases anything."

Prior albums from Swift saw a rise in sales at Bull Moose in the lead-up to the debut of "TTPD," according to Brown.

THE ‘SWIFT LIFT’: HOW TAYLOR SWIFT IS BOOSTING THE ECONOMY

"This will be the very first CD or LP some of those people buy. It might even be the first time they visit a real record store," Brown said.

Davis noted Swift has turned Swifties onto vinyl records and "really shined her spotlight on independent record stores these last couple years." She served as Record Store Day’s ambassador two years ago.

In 2023, the singer recorded 2.48 million U.S. vinyl sales from her various albums, Billboard reported, citing Luminate data. In the U.S., there were reportedly 49.61 million vinyl sales overall last year.

  • Fans celebrated Swift's midnight release of "The Tortured Poets Department" with listening parties and themed gatherings . Many critics praised Swift in their reviews.
  • Swift surprised fans at 2 a.m. ET with news of 15 extra songs.
  • The album features collaborations with Post Malone and Florence + the Machine. Swift described writing the album as deeply personal. "Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it," she said.
  • NBC News' resident Swifties stayed up to blog the biggest takeaways after the album's release.

Vinyl industry rep says pandemic-era manufacturing bottlenecks have eased

taylor swift tour merch and prices

"The Tortured Poets Department" is set to be released in special-edition "ghost"-colored vinyl, available both directly through Swift's website and exclusively at Target.

During the pandemic, that might have alarmed vinyl record buyers. As vinyl plants shuttered and employees were sidelined, vinyl production ground to a halt, causing reports of weekslong backlogs and orders going unfulfilled outright.

But in an interview with NBC News on Friday, Dustin Blocker, president of the Vinyl Records Manufacturing Association, said those issues have been resolved and that suppliers now have more than enough capacity to handle any orders coming their way, including massive ones like Swift's.

"In Q3 2023, we saw the [production] timeline start to go back to normal," Blocker said. "And in Q4 it really got back to normal. Now, everyone, including the huge plants, takes only 8-12 weeks [to produce] ... so it's very good news for everyone."

Blocker said any price increases on the supply side sparked by the bottlenecks have essentially reversed.

So, the $40 price tag on the Target edition of "TTPD" is most likely the result of choices made by Swift, her label and the retailer, he said.

Taylor Swift reveals ‘Dateline’ as an inspiration for ‘Florida!!!’

Maddie Ellis, TODAY

Taylor Swift has taken over radio stations, from Channel 13 on SiriusXM to iHeartRadio briefly renaming itself to iHeartTaylor and sharing messages from the songwriter.

Swift revealed in a soundbite played on iHeartRadio that “Florida!!!” — the eighth track of the album and featuring Florence + the Machine — was inspired by “Dateline.”

“I’m always watching, like ‘Dateline,’” Swift said with a laugh. “People, you know, have these crimes that they commit where they immediately skip town and go to Florida. They try to reinvent themselves, have a new identity, blend in.”

It’s the same with heartbreak, she said.

“I think when you go through a heartbreak, there’s a part of you that thinks, ‘I want a new name. I want a new life,’” she said.

Or perhaps in Swift’s case — a new era?

The standard edition of "The Tortured Poets Department" is said to have been leaked ahead the album's release. The origin of the apparent leaks is unclear, but none of the songs on the extended "anthology" version of the album seem to have been compromised.

Leaks of major artists' work sometimes occur when physical copies of the album arrive prematurely at record stores or department stores, before the tracks are released on streaming platforms. Fans suspect the surprise drop of the double album was a factor in the 15 extra tracks avoiding leaks.

The extra content was so unexpected that the lyrics of the anthology version have yet to be uploaded to Spotify .

‘The Tortured Poets Department’ broke a Spotify record in 12 hours

"The Tortured Poets Department" is already Spotify’s most-streamed album in a single day this year, edging out Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" in less than 12 hours, Spotify confirmed to NBC News.

Swift currently holds the all-time record for most streams in a day by album and by artist for 2022's "Midnights."

Who are The Blue Nile? About the Scottish band named by Swift

In the album's ninth track — "Guilty as Sin?" — Swift name-drops a beloved '80s Scottish band, The Blue Nile.

"Drowning in The Blue Nile. He sent me 'Downtown Lights.' I hadn’t heard it in a while," Swift says in the song.

"Downtown Lights," released in 1989, was the peak of The Blue Nile's commercial success in the U.S., with the song reaching No. 10 on the Billboard American Modern Rock Tracks chart. 1989 is also Swift's birth year and the title of her fifth studio album.

Known for their avoidance of publicity, The Blue Nile has released just four albums since forming in 1981.

Fans share their theories and joy on social media

It wouldn't be a new Taylor Swift album without fans wondering who it's about or decoding the names mentioned in each song. (Who is Cassandra , Taylor?)

That speculation will surely continue, but now that the album is out, fans can't believe their luck. Reactions on social media praised the sonic and lyrical range of the album, saying that "everybody gets everything," whether you listen to Swift for her synth-pop hits or her intimate folk songs.

Author and creator John Green couldn't wait to wake up his daughter to tell her she gets 31 new Taylor Swift songs today.

Daysia Tolentino

As Swifties show their love for "The Tortured Poets Department" on TikTok, they have the chance to be featured in a "Fan Spotlight" carousel that highlights videos with the #TORTUREDPOETSDEPARTMENT hashtag.

TikTok released a "Taylor Swift In-App Experience" that serves as a landing page for all things "TTPD." Fans can complete challenges in exchange for limited-edition "TTPD" profile frames and some Taylor-related searches unlock animations inspired by the album. Searches for "Taylor Swift," "Taylor Nation," and "The Tortured Poets Department" lead fans to the landing page.

The features are particularly notable because Swift's music was pulled off the platform earlier this year as part of a disput between TikTok and Universal Music Group, though many of her tracks returned earlier this month .

Fans on TikTok have already been loving "TTPD," sharing numerous theories , tears and rankings .

That didn't take long.

The song "Fornight" off Swift's new album quickly hit No. 1 on Apple's top song chart. It features rapper and singer Post Malone.

Swift also took the next four spots with "The Tortured Poets Department," "So Long, London," "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toy," and "Down Bad."

The National's Aaron Dessner on working with Swift: 'some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic' songs

Aaron Dessner, a musician who is part of the rock band The National, posted to Instagram about working with Swift on the album along with a pic of her in a studio.

He said that he has now worked with swift on more than 60 songs, including 17 across her newest release.

"I am forever grateful to Taylor for sharing her insane talents with and trusting me with her music. I believe these songs are some of the most lyrically acute, intricate, vulnerable and cathartic Taylor has ever written and I am continually astonished by her skills as a songwriter and performer," he wrote, adding in thanks to a long list of other artists and producers.

Will Swift break her own streaming records?

The October 2022 release of Swift's 10th studio album, "Midnights" shattered records on Spotify and Apple Music.

"Midnights" became Spotify's most-streamed album in a single day with 184.6 million streams when it debuted. Swift also broke the record for most-streamed artist in a single day on Spotify with 228 million streams.

The album also become the biggest album of all time by a female artist in Apple Music history by first-day and first-week streams worldwide.

Saturday is Record Store Day

The release of "The Tortured Poets Department" will come just in time for a notable day in the music industry calendar: Record Store Day on April 20. The annual event has been observed since 2007 to celebrate independent record stores and is often accompanied by exclusive drops by major artists.

Swift has yet to announce a special event, but the date is marked in the TTPD Timetable on her Instagram, suggesting she might have something up her sleeve.

Swift describes new album: 'Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.'

Patrick Smith

Taylor Swift has offered fans a glimpse into the creative process behind "The Tortured Poets Society" and the emotions that inspired it.

In a press release Friday morning to accompany the new release, the artist said:

"The Tortured Poets Department. An anthology of new works that reflect events, opinions and sentiments from a fleeting and fatalistic moment in time — one that was both sensational and sorrowful in equal measure.

"This period of the author’s life is now over, the chapter closed and boarded up. There is nothing to avenge, no scores to settle once wounds have healed. And upon further reflection, a good number of them turned out to be self-inflicted.

"This writer is of the firm belief that our tears become holy in the form of ink on a page. Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it.

"And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry."

To sleep or stream? Swifties question staying up even later

Can you wait until the morning to listen to the 15 extra songs on Swift's anthology?

If you answered no, you're not alone. Online, fans joked that they didn't expect to get this little shut eye.

Surprise: a double album!

"The Tortured Poets Department" is a secret DOUBLE album.

In a 2 a.m. ET surprise, Swift announced an extra 15 songs.

"I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you, so here’s the second installment of TTPD: The Anthology," she wrote on X . "15 extra songs. And now the story isn’t mine anymore… it’s all yours."

It's 2 a.m.

Now what, Taylor?

ICYMI: Swift's powerhouse publicist Tree Paine gets profiled by WSJ

Swift's longtime publicist, Tree Paine, whom many fans know by name, was the subject of a lengthy Wall Street Journal article published Thursday ahead of the new album's release.

While she declined to be interviewed for the story, it delves into how she became one of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry since she joined Swift's camp in 2014.

“There isn’t a publicist in NY, LA or Nashville that wouldn’t jump at an opportunity to work with someone as talented as Taylor Swift and her management team,” Paine said at the time, according to the New York Post .

Couples are now wary of Swift's 'Lover' as a love song

Elena Nicolaou, TODAY

“Lover” — at least until recently — was widely received as one of Swift’s classic love songs. When the album of the same name came out in 2019, its title single was declared  first dance song material , or even a “ wedding waltz .”

In the song, Swift paints a portrait of quiet intimacy. Her wild “Red” days, of thrilling romances with highs and lows and uncertainties in between, had settled into something steadier with one person, captured by a simple chorus: “You’re my, my, my, my lover.”

But that interpretation is now in question, as Swift recasts some of her songs in a different light. Ahead of the release of “The Tortured Poets Department,”  she released five playlists on Apple Music , sorting old songs into groups inspired by the five stages of grief, or “heartbreak.”

Aaron Dessner is credited as a songwriter on five of 16 tracks

Dessner, who is a member of the bands The National and Big Red Machine, is one of two producers who worked on "The Tortured Poets Department."

He's credited as a songwriter on five of the 16 tracks on the standard album.

Dessner first collaborated with Swift on her eighth studio album, “Folklore,” for which he shared in the Grammy win for album of the year. He made several guest appearances with Swift on the U.S. leg of the Eras Tour, joining her onstage during the acoustic set for performances of songs they wrote together.

Here's what some critics are saying in their reviews

taylor swift tour merch and prices

Angela Yang

The critics have spoken. Here's a roundup of some of their takeaways on "The Tortured Poets Department."

Billboard ’s Jason Lipshutz praised Swift’s boldness for releasing a “knowingly messy, wildly unguarded breakup album” at what’s arguably the peak of her career. It's more mature than her past heartbreak albums, he writes, and “not everyone will love it, but the ones who get it will adore it fiercely.”

Variety ’s Chris Willman wrote that the album can serve as an “unapologetically dramatic” soundtrack to listeners’ own heartbreaks.

Labeling it Swift’s most personal album yet, Rolling Stone ’s Rob Sheffield described it as “the cathartic confession of a woman who thought she had adulthood — and adult romance — all figured out, only to find herself realizing she knows nothing.”

And unlike on past albums, Swift doesn’t portray herself as a victim in this one, wrote the Los Angeles Times ’ Mikael Wood. Instead, the album emanates “a proudly villainous energy as Swift embraces her messiest and most chaotic tendencies.”

Jack Antonoff, Swift's longtime collaborator, posts love for album

Antonoff, Swift’s longtime collaborator and friend, shared his love for the new album on X .

"Love this album more than I can say," wrote Antonoff, who worked on “The Tortured Poets Department” as a producer.

Antonoff also co-wrote eight of the album's tracks.

Swifties are starting to post reax on X

In typical fashion after a Swift album drops, reactions from fans are pouring in online, and they TEND TO COME IN ALL CAPS.

As any Swiftie will tell you, listening to new music from the artist always proves to be a collective emotional experience.

Spotify appears to be holding it together (so far)

The last time Swift debuted a brand-new album, Spotify crashed. No major issues so far this time around.

Shoutout to the engineers and people behind the scenes who are probably working overtime to make sure Swifties don't panic.

Swift releases statement after album drop

In her first social media post after “The Tortured Poets Department” was released, Swift shared a statement about the album online.

These songs reflect her experiences from a moment in time that was equally “sensational and sorrowful,” she wrote, adding that it is a chapter now closed.

“Once we have spoken our saddest story, we can be free of it,” Swift wrote. “And then all that’s left behind is the tortured poetry.”

Who is Clara Bow?

taylor swift tour merch and prices

Daniel Arkin

The 16th and final track on the album is named for Clara Bow, one of the leading lights of Hollywood’s silent era.

Bow, unlike a lot of stars from the 1920s, managed to successfully pivot to roles in talkies by the end of the decade. She co-starred in “Wings” (1927), which today is probably best known as the first movie to win the Oscar for best picture.

I’m not a Swiftie, so I don’t have much insight into how Taylor’s music connects to Bow’s acting career — but I’m curious how this track will be interpreted by the die-hards.

Bars, venues hold special Swift parties

On the eve of Swift’s album drop, event venues across the country (and around the world) hosted release parties so Swifties could get their first listen of the “The Tortured Poets Department” on the dance floor.

At Pianos in New York, music from across Swift’s discography will play until the new album drops at midnight. Attendees are encouraged to come in themed outfits and friendship bracelets, and the bar will be serving Swift-inspired cocktails.

In Los Angeles, El Cid is hosting a listening party complete with fan-made merch, giveaways and a themed wall for photos. Attendees can also expect performances from drag queen Jade Jolie, who appeared in Swift’s “You Need to Calm Down” music video.

Several Swiftie-themed events are also being held across the Washington, D.C., area, according to The Washington Post, which compiled a list .

A Swiftie mom and daughter are hosting their own album party

Kristie Gilmore, 36, is ready to celebrate with her daughter, who was born shortly after Swift's “1989” album and has been a Swiftie ever since.

Kristie Gilmore is hosting a TTPD party in the suburbs of Boston.

Gilmore decorated her Boston-area apartment with balloons, signs and stickers in the color palette of “The Tortured Poets Department.” She sprinkled the table with handmade confetti of the album’s logo and made TTPD-themed “membership cards” for themselves and each of her daughter’s friends.

“They’ve been counting down since Taylor announced this album,” Gilmore said, adding, “They’re just hanging out, having a dance party. They’re gonna try to stay up till midnight and listen to it.”

What are the track lengths?

The average track length on “The Tortured Poets Department” is 4 minutes and 4 seconds, making it the third longest album across Swift’s discography.

The longest song is “But Daddy I Love Him,” which clocks in at 5 minutes and 40 seconds.

“I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)” is the shortest song, at 2 minutes and 36 seconds.

Travis Kelce shared his early thoughts about the album

Ahead of the Super Bowl, Swift's boyfriend, Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, weighed in on the new album.

“I have heard some of it, yes. It is unbelievable,”  Kelce said . “I can’t wait for her to shake up the world when it finally drops.”

The couple , who have become the internet's favorite love story , were most recently spotted at Coachella 's first weekend.

Swift's music is back on TikTok despite UMG dispute

Kalhan Rosenblatt

Some songs that Swift fans know “All Too Well” returned to TikTok this month, months after they were removed.

The songs were among the many tracks Universal Music Group pulled off TikTok after the label and the platform  failed to reach an agreement  this year. (UMG has no relationship to NBCUniversal, the parent company of NBC News.)

UMG, known as one of the “Big Three” global music companies, cleared its music from TikTok in late January, saying it was doing so because of a lack of compensation for artists and songwriters. TikTok previously fired back at UMG, accusing the company of putting “their own greed above the interests of artists and songwriters.”

The economics of 'The Tortured Poets Department'

Doha Madani

Die-hard Taylor Swift fans will be spending a pretty penny on her latest album release as she releases four variants of the album with one exclusive track each.

Each variant of “The Tortured Poets Department” is named after the bonus song found at the end of the album: “The Manuscript,” “The Bolter,” “The Albatross” and “The Black Dog.” If a fan wanted to collect them all, the minimum for $13.99 CDs at a store would cost at least $55.96 before taxes.

Longtime Swifties are already familiar with her tendency to provide deluxe editions, as anyone who was around for her original “1989” release can recall the Target exclusive that included three bonus tracks and three voice memos recorded by Swift.

Her “Midnights” release included a Target exclusive track that was added to streaming only months later, and in May she released a new song on “Midnights (The Late Night Edition).” But this is the first time Swift has put an exclusive song on each individual variant, with no clear timeline for when they might be added to streaming.

2024: The year of Post Malone and the pop girlies

Rebecca Cohen

portrait face tattoos

Fresh off of a collab with Beyoncé on "LEVII'S JEANS" from her now-famed "Cowboy Carter," Post Malone finds himself on another major release of 2024: Swift's "The Tortured Poets Department."

He joins Swift on the album's first song, "Fortnight." Swift announced that "Fortnight" would be the album's lead single and the song for which she is releasing a music video 8 o'clock tomorrow night.

"I’ve been such a huge fan of Post because of the writer he is, his musical experimentation and those melodies he creates that just stick in your head forever," Swift wrote on social media. "I got to witness that magic come to life firsthand when we worked together on Fortnight."

While best known for more rap-focused songs, Post Malone is clearly making the rounds in the pop music scene, having also recently collaborated with Noah Kahan on "Dial Drunk." But his back-to-back appearances on arguably two of the biggest albums from pop artists this year raise the questions: Is Post Malone becoming a pop girlie? Is he just having a moment? Or is it all of the above?

There's a book about Swift's impact headed to bookshelves

Rolling Stone writer and music historian Rob Sheffield's book "Heartbreak Is the National Anthem: How Taylor Swift Reinvented Pop Music" will debut Nov. 12.

He's expected to dive further into Swift’s music and fan connection.

Swifties are celebrating with their own listening parties

Many Swifties are sharing their elaborate party setups online as they prepare to celebrate the album release at home.

Karen Rothdeutsch, 25, has decked out her bedroom in upstate New York with “The Tortured Poets Department”-themed decorations, complete with a platter of homemade cupcakes decorated to match Swift’s various vinyl variants.

swiftie party

“I just made my space a little more immersive for my first listen,” Rothdeutsch told NBC News. “I’ll be sitting in my bed with a box of tissues and a notebook, writing down my thoughts and probably checking into Twitter every so often to see what everybody’s thinking about it.”

She said she procured the decorations over the course of several weeks, but the whole setup cost her less than $100. While she decorates on a budget, she said she did splash out on the vinyl variants and collector’s edition CDs.

Swift's new album is already breaking a Spotify record

Spotify said on X that the “The Tortured Poets Department” became the most pre-saved album countdown page in the streaming service’s history.

Since its launch on March 28, TTPD's countdown page has ticked down to the album’s drop, now just hours away.

Was Swift's Grammys dress a 'Fortnight' Easter egg?

The white gown Swift wore to the 2024 Grammys, where she announced "The Tortured Poets Department," appears to have been an Easter egg.

taylor swift full length whote dress red carpet grammys

Swift appears to be wearing a very similar dress in the teaser for the "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)" music video, which will debut 8 p.m. ET tomorrow.

Swift was also pictured hugging Post Malone at the ceremony. Some fans online pointed out a similar shot of the two singers that appears in the teaser for the music video.

Swift drops 'Fortnight' music video teaser

Swift blessed fans with a teaser for “Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)," the album's first single.

"At this hearing, I stand before my fellow members of The Tortured Poets Department with a summary of my findings. Album tonight. Fortnight music video tomorrow at 8pm et," Swift wrote in a post on X , which was accompanied by a short video clip.

The black-and-white teaser gave a sneak peak of the visuals for the music video. It's a combination of dramatic period gowns and a bleak medical setting in this supercut that is reminiscent of "Poor Things," which Swift's longtime friend Emma Stone recently won the best actress Oscar for.

Swift had announced she'd be dropping a music video at 8 p.m. ET tomorrow by sharing a “TTPD Timetable” on her Instagram page this week.

Merch is here — and already selling out

Hours before the album’s release, themed merchandise for “The Tortured Poets Department” is now available to order online.

The merch drop includes hoodies, crewnecks and gold jewelry branded with the album’s logo. A display case for the album vinyls seemingly sold out within minutes.

ICYMI: The Eras Tour concert film is on Disney+

In case you need something to do as you count down to the new album, “Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” is on Disney+. Swift announced the film would be available for streaming in February.

The film features all songs from the three Los Angeles tour dates during which it was filmed at SoFi Stadium. They include “cardigan,” as well as four additional acoustic surprise songs from the tour: “I Can See You,” “Maroon,” “You Are in Love” and “Death by a Thousand Cuts.”

Swifties online are freaking out over purported ‘leaks’

The internet was at it again this week, with some online circulating what they said were leaks of Swift's new album. It is unclear from where and when the apparent leaks originated, but one Reddit thread is already filled with commentary.

As early as Tuesday, "taylor swift leak" appeared to be blocked from searches on X. Instead, when a user tried to search the phrase, a blank page popped up with the message, "Something went wrong. Try reloading."

The secret message has been decoded

The sixth and final word of the secret message, “mortem,” was revealed today, hidden in the lyrics of the song “Begin Again.”

The complete secret message is: “We hereby conduct this post mortem.”

In a collaboration with Apple Music, Swift sorted some of her existing songs into thematic playlists , along with audio messages from her.

The messages seemed to confirm some fans’ theories that the playlists mirrored the five stages of grief — denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance — indicating that the new album may grapple with grief or loss. Swift later used a song from each playlist to reveal a hidden word on Apple Music every day leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department.”

Swift sets fans loose on an international puzzle

Swifties had a big day yesterday after murals with QR codes were unveiled in cities around the world, including Mexico City, Paris and Chicago.

Fans stumbled upon the murals, which Swift had not announced, and scanned them to find a link to a YouTube Shorts video. Every mural had a unique code that led to a different video, each revealing a new letter as part of a word puzzle.

Fans came together online to help decode the puzzle, which seemed to hint at the new album's first track, because it spelled out "for a fortnight."

Swifties in Los Angeles flock to Spotify pop-up library

Many Los Angeles Swifties celebrated the new album with a pop-up library installation in partnership with Spotify.

The three-day event, which runs through today at The Grove, featured a sneak peek at some of the album's lyrics.

Fans posted videos of themselves lined up for hours to get a glimpse at the installation.

A manuscript was front and center at the installation, revealing new lyrics periodically as the pages were turned over the course of three days.

Many fans online tried to identify other potential Easter eggs in the pop-up library, such as a bust of a peace sign, quill and fountain pens and a globe that appeared to be pointing to Florida, the name of a track on the album.

Why is the album called 'The Tortured Poets Department'?

Fans were quick to note that “The Tortured Poets Department” is the longest title for a Taylor Swift album by a large margin, a distinction previously held by her third album, "Speak Now." Before "TTPD," "Speak Now" was her only album title consisting of more than one word.

Speculation surrounding the new album and its uncharacteristic title has primarily revolved around Swift’s  2023 breakup  with British actor Joe Alwyn after their six-year relationship.

After the album announcement, a  2022 Variety interview  between Alwyn and Paul Mescal resurfaced on X. The pair revealed in the interview that they were both members of a WhatsApp group chat titled the Tortured Man Club, prompting some fans to  draw parallels  between Alwyn and Swift’s upcoming album.

The true meaning of “The Tortured Poets Department” remains to be seen, but the album's rollout has featured references to famous poems like Charles Baudelaire’s “The Albatross,” among other literary references.

Clues keep coming

Speculation continues to grow over clues for lyrics, song titles and the album’s first music video.

Not much from Miss Swift so far

It's been a notably quiet rollout for "The Tortured Poets Department."

No themed Instagram grid overhaul, no lead singles, not even a cryptic calendar leading Swifties on wild goose chases for potential Easter eggs.

A week before the release, Taylor Swift was rocking out at Coachella instead of feeding her fans who are desperate for a hint of what's to come.

Aside from a hand-painted QR code on the side of a building in Chicago, a planned exhibit at The Grove in Los Angeles in partnership with Spotify and a quick video released Tuesday that appears to leave the "Midnights" era in the dust as viewers tour The Tortured Poets Department, Swift has been silent on what we can expect.

In the video , posted to her Instagram account, we did get a glimpse of a schedule that only showed release day, and on it, the promise of a music video on Friday at 8 p.m. ET. Fourteen tick marks beneath led some to think the music video could be for the 14th track on the album, or for the leading song, "Fortnight," since a fortnight is 14 days.

Swifties believing in the latter theory proved to be correct. Swift announced that the music video would be for "Fortnight" in a Thursday afternoon social media post.

Swifties online continue to grasp for any details to try to figure out what this mastermind might have in store for her beloved fan base.

What songs are on the new album?

Here's what songs are on the track list.

  • "Fortnight (feat. Post Malone)"
  • "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • "My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys"
  • "So Long, London"
  • "But Daddy I Love Him"
  • "Fresh Out the Slammer"
  • "Florida!!! (Florence + the Machine)"
  • "Guilty as Sin?"
  • "Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?"
  • "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)"
  • "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart"
  • "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived"
  • "The Alchemy"
  • "Clara Bow"

Swift has also announced four bonus tracks: "The Manuscript," “The Bolter,” “The Albatross” and “The Black Dog.” Each bonus track will be available on a separate vinyl variant and won't be on the streaming version of the album.

When does 'The Tortured Poets Department' drop?

Swift's 11th studio album, "The Tortured Poets Department," will be released Friday at 12 a.m. ET, or 9 p.m. PT.

It will be available for purchase on vinyl, on cassette, as a digital album and in CD form. It will also be on several streaming services, including Spotify and Apple Music.

But if you plan to stream “The Tortured Poets Department” right after its release, be prepared for potential delays. When Swift’s most recent brand-new album, “Midnights,” was released, Spotify  briefly crashed  because of intense demand.

European cities hope jet-setting Taylor Swift fans will splash the cash for Eras tour

The superstar arrives in Europe next month – and Swifties, tourist boards and venues are already preparing

T im Brown, 44, and his wife, Marcella, 34, may not consider themselves bona fide “Swifties”, but when it was announced last June that Taylor Swift would be visiting their corner of the globe this summer they could not resist joining the scramble for a pair of tickets.

A post-pandemic appetite for live music events has fuelled huge worldwide interest in the American singer-songwriter’s Eras tour, which surpassed in $1bn sales in November to become the highest-grossing series of concerts in history.

The pop culture event of the summer will arrive in Europe next month, kicking off in Paris on 9 May and wrapping up in London on 20 August with 49 dates in between in Sweden, Ireland, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Austria, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

The unique nature of the tour’s ticketing system, which was tweaked after a number of hitches last year, means there will be a mass movement of travelling fans who will not only be Swiftie in affiliation but swift-like in their willingness to travel across the continent.

In expectation of intense demand, Ticketmaster introduced a pre-registration system that rewarded some early applicants with access codes to the ticket sale proper, via staggered windows for each city.

Notionally designed to prioritise genuine fans over “scalpers” – people who buy and resell tickets for a quick profit – the pre-sales system also meant many fans registered for tickets in multiple destinations across Europe to increase their chances.

Taylor Swift performs on stage amid a sea of confetti

Tim and Marcella, who live in Norwich, registered not just for the nearest concerts – in London and Liverpool – but also in Amsterdam and Lisbon. The pair got lucky with a pair of €91 tickets in the Portuguese capital and have turned the trip into a weekend break. “I used to live in Lisbon so I thought why not kill two birds with one stone,” Tim said. “We booked ourselves flights and four nights’ accommodation the same day.” They are far from alone.

Katie Soo, the chief business officer of DICE, a rival ticketing company, said: “The excitement and uncertainty inherent in the ticket-purchasing process might have inadvertently incentivised fans to apply for tickets in multiple cities, thereby increasing the likelihood of travelling across Europe to attend the concerts.”

Hotel prices

Several European cities have already reported a sharp rise in demand for hotel and short-term rental accommodation over the summer, when the Swift hurricane will arrive. In Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff, rooms at the Travelodge chain around Swift’s June dates have been sold out since August 2023, a month after tickets for the shows went on sale.

In Paris, where fans anticipate Swift to debut an updated version of the Eras show with songs from the new Tortured Poets Department album, 80% of hotels and apartments listed on Booking.com are already full up. In Warsaw on 2 August, only 9% of hotels listed on the same site are still available.

Not all of the 18 cities covered by the Eras tour are obvious tourism destinations. From 17-19 July, Swift will play three concerts at the 65,000-capacity home ground of the football club Schalke 04 in Gelsenkirchen in Ruhr valley, western Germany. The city’s less-than-familiar name prompted one US chatshow host to quip that “the place might not even exist”.

Yet even in Germany’s rust belt the influx of Swift fans is temporarily transforming the hotel market: any two-bedroom apartments that remain available are going for €800-2,000 a night, with cheaper accommodation available only in surrounding cities that are just as off the usual tourist track as Gelsenkirchen, such as Essen, Bochum or Herne.

Cities with stricter rules on allowing Airbnb-style holiday lets and a more limited stock of short-term rental apartments are reporting a particularly marked increase in rates during Swift’s visit, with about 30% year-on-year spikes in rental rates in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Milan, according to AirDNA, a data analytics company specialising in the short-term rentals market.

Of all the tour’s European stops, Vienna is experiencing the most notable impact on its rental market, with booking rates for the nights of Swift’s concerts recorded in February 44% higher than at the same point the previous year. By the end of March the number of nights booked in the Austrian capital for the length of Swift’s stay in the second week of August had risen by 430% compared with the same period in 2023.

When Luke Tilden’s wife, Tatjana, suggested last summer that the couple buy their 13- and 15-year-old daughters, Lena and Maya, tickets to a Taylor Swift gig for Christmas, the 53-year-old Briton initially waved it off. “There’s no chance in hell we’d get a ticket without paying through our noses, I thought,” said Tilden, who works as an interpreter at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.

But after pre-registering for tickets in London, Paris and Munich, the Tildens got unexpectedly lucky for four tickets in southern Germany and have turned the concert visit into a mini-holiday: “We’ll visit the in-laws in Bavaria, enjoy the countryside, do a bit of hiking.”

The hope in cities across Europe is that this will be replicated on a massive scale, with fans’ excitement translating into generous spending sprees on food, shopping and leisure. In Stockholm, for example, where authorities are expecting 159,000 visitors to arrive from 135 countries in mid-May, the chamber of commerce has forecast a spending boost of €50m. “We hope the whole town will buzz from the Eras tour,” said Tomas Andersson, a spokesperson for the Swedish capital’s tourism board.

Whether fans will necessarily act like ordinary tourists, however, is up for debate. “Pop-culture tourists do not necessarily care about traditional buildings and authentic restaurants,” said Maria Lexhagen, a professor at the European Tourism Research Institute, Mid Sweden University.

“Joining up with other fan communities is stronger motivation, as is the idea that they might get closer to the stars themselves. Many of them will map out where Swift is spending her time in the city – they will seek out seemingly marginal but meaningful places like back alleys or coffee shops.” Venues may be hoping for a repeat of Sydney in February, when Swift swept into an unassuming Italian restaurant in the suburbs and sent its name into global media headlines.

In Stockholm the tourism board said it was expecting bookshops and secondhand clothes stores, rather than museums and royal palaces, to attract most of the arriving visitors. Some venues are being proactive: one restaurant within walking distance of the multipurpose Friends Arena in the Solna municipality is putting on a “Taylor Swift brunch experience” with a karaoke stage; the waterfront nightclub Debaser is hosting a pre-concert party on 16 May, an all-ages all-day party with a Swift-themed quiz on 19 May and an afterparty the day after.

Environment

As the Swift circus rolls across the continent, the transport infrastructure of urban centres will also be put to the test. Around the tour’s three-night stop in Dublin at the end of June, Irish Rail has announced additional late-night services to Cork and Limerick to meet an expected increase in demand. Extra tram and bus services are likely to be announced nearer the time.

Unlike rail operators, most airlines do not have capacity to charter additional flights. Due to yield management – airlines adjusting prices based on expected demand – a scramble for airborne journeys into cities that host the Eras tour is more likely to result in more expensive tickets rather than additional flights.

Officials at Lisbon airport said no additional flights had been chartered around Swift’s concerts on 24 and 25 May but that demand would probably be reflected in slightly higher load factors. A spokesperson for Amsterdam Schiphol said general aviation slots could be requested at short notice but nothing out of the ordinary had been logged so far.

Calculating the environmental impact of the tour with any certainty was difficult, experts said. “We can expect that some Swift fans will travel a long way to see one, if not several, shows across Europe”, said Stefan Gössling, a professor of tourism at Linnaeus University in Kalmar, Sweden. “But measuring the environmental impact of these trips is extremely difficult – it would involve a lot of guesswork.”

Swift fans queue to buy a merchandise

This did not mean the carbon footprint was negligible. “Every flight taken by a person adds to demand and hence influences supply considerations,” Gössling said. “The greater the demand, the more aircrafts are in service.”

The pop star’s carbon footprint is easier to estimate. Swift owns two jets by the French manufacturer Dassault, whose journeys are trackable. During the 2023 leg of the Eras tour, Swift’s planes spent 166 hours crisscrossing the US in about 75 individual journeys, though it is possible they were used by people other than the singer.

According to data available through the open-access aviation tracker ADS-B exchange, Swift’s jets caused carbon emissions of about 2,830 tonnes of CO 2 equivalent over the course of the US Eras tour – about 1,700 times the annual contribution of an average person.

A spokesperson for Swift told US media last year that in advance of the tour’s start in March 2023, the pop star bought more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. Carbon offset credits are tradable certificates that allow purchasers to compensate for emissions by investing in environmental projects that claim to reduce carbon emissions, though recent studies have questioned the efficacy of these schemes.
