USS Midway History

Over the course of the 20 th  Century, no United States aircraft carrier was in active service for longer than the USS  Midway . Named in honor of the Battle of Midway, a significant naval confrontation that took place in early June 1942, the USS  Midway  was launched in September 1945, just after the close of World War II. The USS  Midway  would go on to see action all over the world, engaging in deployments off the coast of Vietnam, joining in NATO exercises, and serving as flagship naval carrier during Operation Desert Storm.

The USS  Midway  was decommissioned in 1992, and spent the next decade in storage. In 2003, plans were made to transform  Midway  into a museum, and the ship was moved to San Diego Bay. The USS  Midway  Museum opened its doors in 2004, and millions of visitors have passed across its decks ever since.

What’s at the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier

There are four primary exhibit areas at the USS  Midway  Museum: Hangar Deck, Flight Deck, Below Decks, and the Aircraft Gallery. Each one of the deck exhibits contains a plethora of hands-on experiences that share the story of life on the  Midway , details about its lengthy career, and historical artifacts pertaining to some of its many missions. Meanwhile, the Aircraft Gallery is home to over 30 historic aircrafts and helicopters. All of these aircrafts have been meticulously restored, and each one represents an important part of the  Midway ’s service.

The Battle of Midway Theater is a 90-seat facility that shows a 15-minute film called “Voices of Midway.” This riveting movie tells the story of the famous World War II battle that gave its name to the aircraft carrier, and is part of your general admission ticket. If you’re willing to pay a bit extra, you won’t want to miss going for a ride on one of the  Midway ’s flight simulators, Air Combat 360 and Virtual Reality Flight Experience: Screaming Eagles.

The USS  Midway  Museum has its own dedicated, on-site gift shop. Known as the Jet Shop, it occupies a prominent spot on the ship’s hangar deck, in the same location where jet engines were serviced by crew members when the vessel was on active duty. There you’ll have your pick of Navy-related apparel, souvenirs, books, and USS  Midway -themed memorabilia.

Not too far from the Jet Shop is Café 41, USS  Midway ’s in-house restaurant. Café 41 has been recently renovated and now features an all-new menu. Favorites here include staples like sandwiches, burgers, salads, and more. There’s usually a daily special or two available as well. If you’re hungry but in a hurry, Jet Express is a “grab-n-go” option that might work best for you and your needs.

Tips for Visiting the USS Midway

  • If you are planning to visit many tourist attractions while in Sand Diego, think about buying a Go San Diego Pass . It includes admission to the Midway Aircraft Carrier as well as lot of other popular tourist attractions for one price.
  • The USS  Midway  Museum is a large site, where there’s a lot to see and do. Therefore, it’s recommended you budget three to four hours when planning to visit, and wear comfortable shoes—you’ll be on your feet plenty!
  • Unlike most museums, the USS  Midway  Museum actually permits same-day re-entry. All you have to do is swing by the Visitors Information Center for more details.
  • All visitors are provided a self-guided audio tour with their admission. This terrific resource is divided into three parts covering the flight deck, hangar deck, and below-deck, and since it’s self-guided, you can customize your listening experience to suit your interests. • There are plenty of museum docents situated throughout the museum just waiting to answer any of your questions. Many of these individuals have personal experience as navy veterans, and they can easily be identified by the yellow hats they wear.
  • Air Combat 360 is a two-person flight simulator. Both spots must be occupied by participants, each participant must be at least 48” tall, and it costs less than $10 per person. Virtual Reality Flight Experience: Screaming Eagles is similarly priced, and each participant must be at least 38” tall.

Midway’s Virtual Program for Teachers Launches This Summer

The USS Midway Museums Institute for Teachers (MIT) is delighted to announce the Midway Virtual Institute for 2021. All Midway Institute seminars will be online in 2021, offered from the last week in June through the end of July.

Seminars will be provided at no cost to teachers and will be held for two or three days, depending on the particular topics. One day webinars will also be offered.

The objective of the Midway Virtual Institute is to give teachers the opportunity to expand their knowledge of key issues about the Cold War, Vietnam War, Korean War, and World War II in the Pacific, including multiple interpretations, primary sources, and classroom strategies. All seminars will emphasize the inclusion of material suitable for classroom use.

Sessions will be held for approximately three hours each day, including talks by scholars and time for participants and scholars to interact. Each seminar will include a video tour of locations aboard Midway to showcase the ship as America’s premier aircraft carrier museum.

The seminar program gets underway with “Legacy of Protest” from June 29 – July 1. This will be an overview of the protest movements during the Cold War era (1960s and 1970s), with emphasis on the American civil rights, women’s rights, and Vietnam antiwar movements.

On July 6 – 8 we will offer “The Last Years of the War in Vietnam and its Aftermath,” reviewing the 1970s events leading to the end of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, the collapse of South Vietnam in 1975, and the unification of the two Vietnams.

“The Global Cold War and its Impact in Developing Countries: Case Studies from Asia and Latin America” will be the topic for July 13 –15. This seminar will include five case studies, examining key questions, U.S. policies, and the internal dynamics of the countries involved.

July 20 –21 brings “The Visual Culture of the Cold War,” a review of posters, cover art, cartoons, video, propaganda, and other media images that can be used in the classroom to illustrate cultural changes.

Two single day webinars at the end of July round out the Midway Virtual Institute’s summer programs. On July 27, we will offer “Understanding North Korea,” analyzing the Kim family dictatorship and its military and nuclear capability. On July 28 we will have “World War II and the Rise of the Aircraft Carrier,” focusing on the aircraft carrier as the centerpiece of American naval strategy.

Additionally, from July 19 – 22, the Gilder-Lehrman Institute will offer an online seminar co-sponsored by Midway entitled “The Vietnam War.” This seminar covers the many years of war in Vietnam waged between 1940 and 1975.

All topics, schedules and speakers are subject to change due to possible COVID-19 disruptions.  For details and updates about the new Midway Virtual Institute for Teachers, or for teachers’ program registration, see the education section of the Midway’s website.

USS Midway Historic Aircraft Carrier & Naval Museum

uss midway virtual tour

The USS Midway aircraft carrier is America’s most popular naval warship museum . Located in downtown San Diego, the museum is open 10am to 5pm 7 days a week, closing only for Thanksgiving and Christmas Day . The museum holds over 700 events a year, from Navy retirements and re-enlistments to changes of command.

What is the USS Midway Known For?

Commissioned after the culmination of World War II, the USS Midway was one of the longest-serving aircraft carriers of the 20th century. The United States Navy used the Midway throughout the Cold War , until the carrier was decommissioned in 1992. Midway was an important contributor to the US war effort in Vietnam .

During Operation Frequent Wind , known by civilians as the evacuation of Saigon, the Midway was the scene of a heroic rescue. Major Buang-Ly of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force loaded his family of seven onto a 2-seat Cessna O-1, evaded enemy ground fire while fleeing occupied Côn Sơn, and pleaded with Midway to let him land. After learning of the situation the ship’s commanding officer, Captain Larry Chambers, ordered $10 million of Huey helicopters to be pushed into the Indian Ocean to make room for the family to safely and expertly land. In so doing Major Buang was the first Vietnamese fixed-wing pilot to ever land on an aircraft carrier deck. Operation Frequent Wind is regarded as the most perilous period the Midway experienced. The ARVN (Army of the Republic of Vietnam) collapsed much faster than anticipated, and defectors from its air force bombed the local air base, restricting tactical options and projecting dangerous amounts of firepower into South Vietnam’s coastal waters.

banner

Midway’s last engagement was in Operation Desert Storm , where she conducted the first carrier strikes of the war. Midway left the Persian Gulf in March 1991, and was decommissioned in April 1992, in Seattle.

The USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum

The former carrier departed the Navy Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Washington, bound for San Diego, California, where it would serve as both museum and memorial. On January 2004 it was moored at the Broadway Pier in San Diego and opened to the public in June of that year. More than twice as many visitors came aboard the USS Midway as were expected in its first year: almost 880 thousand in all.

Admission to the Midway aircraft carrier museum includes a self-guided tour in six languages:

  • Mandarin Chinese

USS Midway Audio Tours

The USS Midway audio tour lasts between 2 and 4 hours, depending on the interest levels of the individual. For younger guests, there is a family tour, specifically curated for children. This tour is shorter, at between 2 to 3 hours. Both versions of the tour take in:

  • The flight deck— visitors can hear from pilots who flew the more than 20 aircraft, check out the Officers’ Country, and pilot Ready Rooms.
  • The hangar deck— here, visitors learn about how you dropped anchor for such a large carrier, what it was like to sleep in an enlisted sailor’s bunk, or fly a WWII aircraft .
  • Below decks— this section of the tour introduces visitors to the Engine Room, Galley, Sick Bay, and Laundry, among other areas.

Other Museum Activities

There is far more than the audio tour for visitors to take in at the Midway maritime museum.  USS Midway exhibits and activities include:

  • Not one, but two flight simulators are available for visitors to experience what it is like to be a Navy pilot: one called Air Combat 360 which mimics aerial combat including rolls, spins, somersaults, and loops. The second, the Screaming Eagles exercise, simulates the experience of an F/18 pilot.
  • There is a 90-seat theater with a 15 minute multimedia movie about the Battle of Midway , the story told by those who participated in it.
  • A second tour, this one guided by a Docent, shows visitors the ‘island’: the command center for flight deck operations. This tour requires visitors to climb ladders and is often sold out, so those wishing to participate should go early to avoid disappointment.
  • On the flight deck, Docents (many of whom are former Navy pilots) explain the process of launching off (catapults) and landing on an aircraft carrier (traps).
  • Children visiting the museum can earn their Junior Pilot Wings by visiting the locations in the family audio tour and follow the instructions on their activity sheet. Those who finish the tasks will receive their wings in a special ceremony.
  • For youth groups and families interested in an authentic aircraft carrier experience, the museum offers Snooze Crewz. During these overnight adventures, young visitors can sleep in the original Navy bunks, eat breakfast on board, and take part in other onboard activities.

Volunteer Docents wearing yellow hats are available around the museum to answer questions for visitors and even share personal stories.

uss midway virtual tour

All in all, the USS Midway Museum offers a great deal of educational and informational value for the cost of entry. Adults (those over the age of 12) pay $26, while children between 6 and 12, as well as veterans with proof of service pay the reduced rate of $18. Active duty military personnel (including reservists), as well as active sworn police officers and fire fighters that present qualifying ID enter for free, as do children under the age of 6. The museum also offers annual passes for couples and groups of 4.

Donald Viewig

The Midway Museum is a great ship to tour. I served on the USS Ticonderoga in 67-68 as a YN3 in the Air Department Office and was surprised and happy to see my former Air Boss, Dick Schulte, had been the Commanding Officer of the Midway when the ship changed home ports to Japan.

The retired officer explaining how planes get captured had been the Air Boss under Captain Schulte.

A great way to spend a few hours while visiting San Diego.

Dennis Mccutchan

Donald Viewig I was on the Tico the same time as you were. I was a ordancemen in VF 191.

Art Rader

The Midway Museum is a great ship to visit with the entire family. The USS Midway (VA-115) was my first duty station in 1973. Followed by these ships in my 28 year career: USS Ponchatoula, USS Bryce Canyon, USS Tarawa, USS Ranger (my 2nd carrier), USS Dixon, USS Coronado (Com 3rd Flt Staff). I was on the Midway for Operation Frequent Wind and Operation Eagle Pull when we pushed the Huey helicopters into the Indian Ocean and had Major Buang-Ly land his Cessna on the Flight Deck with his family of seven (7). The tours are outstanding. You won’t be disappointed!

John Ciani

The USS Midway was my first ship. I was in VF-151 in 1972-73. I also visited the Midway as a museum a few times, and it was like going back in time.

Please be sure to enjoy our temporary “Island Presentation” on the flight deck to learn about all the functions of the island superstructure and command center.

Enjoy a special tour onboard, led by one of Midway’s world-class volunteer Docents!

An aircraft carrier’s  island  is the command center for flight deck operations, as well as the ship as a whole. The island  is located on the flight deck and rises above all the aircraft aboard ship.

Midway’s guided Island Tour takes you up serpentine ladders through the navigation and flight control sections of the ship.

Expert Midway Docents will lead you through to explain Air Operations, Pri-fly, Navigational chart room, Captain’s Bridge, and Captain’s at sea cabin.

The Island Tour is given daily on the flight deck and is included with the price of admission. Space is limited. -->
