Slipknot  ( / ˈ s l ɪ p n ɒ t /   SLIP -not ) is an American  heavy metal  band formed in  Des Moines, Iowa , in 1995 by percussionist  Shawn Crahan , drummer  Joey Jordison  and bassist  Paul Gray . After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade: Crahan, Jordison, Gray,  Craig Jones ,  Mick Thomson ,  Corey Taylor ,  Sid Wilson ,  Chris Fehn , and  Jim Root . Bassist Gray died on May 24, 2010, and was replaced during 2011–2014 by  Donnie Steele . Jordison was dismissed from the band on December 12, 2013. Steele left during the recording sessions for  .5: The Gray Chapter . The band found replacements in  Alessandro Venturella  on bass and  Jay Weinberg on drums. After the departure of Jordison, as of December 2013 the only founding member in the current lineup is percussionist Crahan. Fehn was also dismissed from the band in March 2019 prior to the writing of  We Are Not Your Kind  and was replaced by  Michael Pfaff . The band parted ways with Jones in 2023.

Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their  eponymous debut album  in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album,  Iowa , although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with  Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) , before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album,  All Hope Is Gone , which debuted at number one on the US  Billboard  200  chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album,  .5: The Gray Chapter , in 2014. Their sixth studio album,  We Are Not Your Kind , was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album,  The End, So Far , was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled  9.0: Live  and  Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico , a compilation album titled  Antennas to Hell , and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide and over 12 million in their home country.

In the years before Slipknot formed, a state of shifting band membership existed throughout the heavy metal scene in  Des Moines, Iowa . In 1991, the biggest heavy metal band in Des Moines was Atomic Opera, with  Jim Root  on guitar. [6]  Drummer  Joey Jordison  founded a  thrash metal  band called Modifidious, playing at a club called Runway. Modifidious opened for Atomic Opera on December 1, 1991, at the Runway, after which their guitarist left for the more successful Atomic Opera. Jordison replaced him with local guitarist  Craig Jones . [7]  Drummer  Shawn Crahan  formed another Des Moines band called Heads on the Wall, playing  funk metal   cover songs  at clubs and releasing a demo tape in July 1992. A fourth Des Moines band called Vexx played  death metal  with Anders Colsefni on drums,  Paul Gray  on bass, and  Josh Brainard  on guitar and vocals. Colsefni later took over vocal duties, but Vexx never recorded. During this time, Crahan often went to the Runway on Sundays when the club opened to all ages, where he met other young musicians with whom he could  jam . By March 1993, Crahan was jamming with vocalist Colsefni, bassist Gray and guitarist Patrick Neuwirth, writing and playing songs in Gray's basement, discussing possible band names, but never making a final decision. One of the songs they recorded was titled "Slipknot". The word on the second recording’s spine was "Painface", which Colsefni later used to name his band Painface. [8]

In 1993, a new band called Inveigh Catharsis formed in Des Moines, with Gray on bass, Brainard on guitar and Colsefni on drums. Jordison jammed occasionally with this group. Brainard eventually left to join Jordison and Jones in Modifidious, participating in demo recordings at the end of '93 and early in '94. During 1994, Modifidious sometimes played the same shows as Crahan's Heads on the Wall band. Gray formed a  death metal  band called Body Pit, soon becoming popular in the local scene. [6]  Modifidious stopped playing in the wake of death metal's increasing pull. Gray failed to get Jordison to join Body Pit, but soon after he recruited local guitar teacher  Mick Thomson , the band broke up. [7]

In September 1995, Crahan and Gray started a band named the Pale Ones. [9]  The lineup was made up of friends who met through the local music scene, including vocalist Colsefni and guitarist  Donnie Steele . [9]  Not long after their inception, Gray invited Jordison to a rehearsal because the band was interested in experimenting with additional drum elements. Jordison subsequently joined the band as their drummer, moving Crahan to percussion. [9] Furthermore, Colsefni also took up percussion while remaining the band's vocalist. The band then decided to invite Brainard as their second guitarist, bringing their lineup to six members. [10]  After playing a private Halloween show on October 31, the band made their public debut on November 5 at a benefit show, using the name Meld. [11] [12]

Demo recording and beginnings (1995–1998)

Much of the band's early development was retrospectively attributed to late-night planning sessions between Gray, Crahan and Jordison at a  Sinclair  gas station where Jordison worked nights. It was there, in late 1995, that Jordison suggested changing the band name to Slipknot after their song of the same name. [10]  In December, Slipknot began recording material at  SR Audio , a studio in the band's hometown. [13]  As they didn't have a recording contract, the band self-financed the project, the costs of which came to an estimated $40,000. [14]  In February 1996, guitarist Donnie Steele, a Christian, left Slipknot after discussions regarding the band's lyrics with the producer, Sean McMahon. Jordison said of Steele's departure: "(he) was having these God talks, when we were supposed to be working... We were prepared to keep him on, but he didn't want to stay." [15]  Steele himself has said: "I left for a few reasons...I had a lot on my mind spiritually." [16]  During the  mixing  stages of their project at  SR Audio ,  Craig Jones  was recruited as Steele's replacement on guitar. [17]  However, throughout their time in the studio, the band were adding  samples  to their recordings but could not produce these sounds live. Subsequently, Jones became the band's sampler and  Mick Thomson  was brought in as the replacement guitarist. [18]  After a complicated time with mixing and  mastering , the band self-released  Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat.  on  Halloween , October 31, 1996. [19]

Distribution for the demo was initially left to the band and their producer Sean McMahon, before it was handed over to the distribution company  -ismist Recordings  in early 1997. [20]  Slipknot received a small amount of airplay on local radio stations off the back of the demo. However, it did not lead to any kind of interest from record labels, so the band returned to the studio to develop new material. [20]  It was at this time that the band sought more melodic vocals for their music. As a result,  Corey Taylor  was recruited from fellow Des Moines band  Stone Sour ; this moved Colsefni to backing vocals and percussion. [21]  While working in the studio, Slipknot continued to do local shows, during one of which in September 1997, Colsefni announced on stage that he was leaving the band. [22]  The gap on percussion was filled by Greg Welts, who was affectionately known as "Cuddles". [23]  In early 1998, Slipknot produced a second demo featuring five tracks exclusively for record labels. [24]  The band began to receive a lot of attention from record labels, and in February 1998, producer  Ross Robinson  offered to produce their debut album after attending rehearsals in Des Moines. [25]  Soon after, DJ  Sid Wilson  was recruited as the band's ninth member after showing great interest and impressing band members. [26]  In late June, Slipknot received a $500,000, seven-album deal, from  Roadrunner Records ; the band signed the deal publicly on July 8, 1998. [27]  Two days prior to this, Welts was fired from the band, something which Slipknot refuse to comment on. [27]  Welts was replaced by Brandon Darner, who departed from the band shortly after joining.

Self-titled debut album and emergence (1998–2000)

Chris Fehn  was brought in to replace Darner on percussion before Slipknot traveled to  Malibu, California , to work on their debut album in September 1998. [29]  Partway through the recording process of the album, Slipknot returned to Des Moines for the Christmas period. During that period, guitarist Brainard decided to leave the band. [30]  Brainard said, "some decisions were made that I wasn't particularly happy with". [31]  Slipknot later recruited Jim Root to complete their lineup and the band returned to Malibu to continue work on the album. [31]  Work on the album concluded in early 1999, allowing the band to go on their first tour as part of the  Ozzfest  lineup in 1999. [19]  Ozzfest greatly increased Slipknot's audience, furthering the band's success with  their self-titled album  that was released on June 29, 1999. [32]  Slipknot released its first home video  Welcome to Our Neighborhood , which was directed by  Thomas Mignone , and the singles " Wait and Bleed " and " Spit It Out ", [19]  which were also directed by Mignone. The singles received some airplay, but Slipknot quickly developed a large following, mainly from touring and word of mouth. [19]  The band toured several countries throughout 1999 and 2000 in support of the album. In early 2000,  Slipknot  was certified platinum; a first for an album released by Roadrunner Records. [33]

Iowa  (2001–2003)

Anticipation for Slipknot's second album was intense. In early 2001, the band began recording the second album at Sound City and Sound Image studios in Los Angeles. [19] [34]  Around this time, conflicts arose between band members due to extensive touring and recording schedules. [35]  Recording of their second album ended in February 2001 and the band embarked on their  Iowa World Tour . [36]  Entitled  Iowa , Slipknot's second album—released on August 28, 2001—peaked at number three on the  Billboard  charts and at number one in the UK. [37]  The album produced three singles; "The Heretic Anthem" (promotional single), " Left Behind " and " My Plague ", which appeared on the soundtrack for the film  Resident Evil . [38] [39]  In 2002, Slipknot appeared in  Rollerball  (2002), performing "I Am Hated". [40]  The release and intense promotion of the album resulted in sold-out shows in large arenas in several countries. [41]

In mid-2002, Slipknot went on hiatus because of internal conflicts, and band members focused on side projects. [42]  Vocalist Taylor and guitarist Root revived their band Stone Sour, drummer Jordison created  Murderdolls  with vocalist Wednesday 13, percussionist Crahan founded  To My Surprise  and DJ Wilson went solo as DJ Starscream. [42]  Both Taylor and Jordison appeared on MTV unmasked for the first time in public promoting their respective bands. [43]  For a while, the future of Slipknot was uncertain and there was much speculation about whether there would be a third album, or if the split would become permanent. [44]  An official update appeared on their official website on January 24, 2003, denying those claims. [45]  "I don't have a problem with anyone in Slipknot," Jordison protested. "I've seen comments from Corey saying there are things to be resolved, but I have no fucking idea what he's talking about." [46]

Nonetheless, on November 22, 2002, Slipknot released their second DVD,  Disasterpieces . [47]

Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)  (2003–2007)

It was the rebirth of Slipknot, [...] it was like us coming back together, pushing out the vibe that had gotten in there and kinda started pulling people away. But we figured out that you know, we do  have  to get space you know, we do need to let people be sometimes.

—Bassist  Paul Gray , on Slipknot's third album [48]

220px-Slipknot_performing_in_November_2005.jpg

After several delays, Slipknot moved into  The Mansion  in Los Angeles, California, in mid-2003 to work on their third album alongside producer  Rick Rubin . [49]  By early 2004, work on the album had finished and the band began  The Subliminal Verses World Tour  with their appearance on the  Jägermeister Music Tour in March 2004. [50]   Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses)  was released on May 24, 2004; it peaked at number two on the  Billboard  album charts. [51]  The album produced six singles; " Duality ", " Vermilion ", " Vermilion, Pt. 2 ", " Before I Forget ", " The Nameless ", and  The Blister Exists . Slipknot recorded its first live album,  9.0: Live , while touring in support of the band's third album. Released on November 1, 2005  9.0: Live  peaked at number 17 on the  Billboard  album charts. [52]  Touring in support of  Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) continued through 2004 and up to the end of 2005 before Slipknot went on hiatus for the second time.

In 2005, several members of Slipknot were involved in  Roadrunner United: The All-Star Sessions , a collaborative album recorded by artists signed to Roadrunner Records for the label's 25th anniversary. 2006 saw Slipknot win their first  Grammy Award , picking up the  Best Metal Performance  award for the single "Before I Forget". [53]  The single went on to be featured on the set list of  Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock . [54]  On December 5, 2006, Slipknot released its third DVD  Voliminal: Inside the Nine . [55]  While Slipknot was on hiatus, several band members again focused their attentions on side projects; vocalist Taylor and guitarist Root returned to Stone Sour, drummer Jordison toured with several bands and produced  3 Inches of Blood 's third album  Fire Up the Blades , Crahan founded  Dirty Little Rabbits  and Wilson returned as DJ Starscream once again.

All Hope Is Gone  and Gray's death (2008–2010)

220px-Slipknot_at_Mayhem_1.jpg

Preparation for Slipknot's fourth album began towards the end of 2007; work began at  Sound Farm Studio  in  Jamaica, Iowa , with producer  Dave Fortman  in February 2008. [56] [57]  The album was finished in June, and the band went on the  All Hope Is Gone World Tour  on July 9, 2008. [58]  Slipknot's fourth album,  All Hope Is Gone , was released on August 20, 2008, debuting at number one on the  Billboard  albums chart. [59]  The album produced five singles; " All Hope Is Gone ", " Psychosocial ", " Dead Memories ", " Sulfur " and " Snuff ". 2009 marked the 10th anniversary of Slipknot's debut album; to commemorate the event, the band released a special-edition version of  Slipknot  on September 9, 2009. [60]  The band toured in support of the album throughout 2008 and continued until October 31, 2009, resulting in Slipknot's third hiatus. [61]

During the hiatus, several band members focused on respective side projects; Taylor founded  Junk Beer Kidnap Band  and returned to Stone Sour with guitarist Root; Crahan continued working with his band Dirty Little Rabbits; and drummer Jordison returned with his band Murderdolls and became the new permanent drummer of Rob Zombie. Meanwhile, percussionist Fehn became a full-time bassist with  metalcore  band  Will Haven  and Sid Wilson founded the eponymous band Sid. [ citation needed ]

He was everything that was wonderful about this band and about this group of people. The only way I can sum up Paul Gray is 'love'.

—Vocalist  Corey Taylor , on the death of Paul Gray [62]

In 2010, Gray was planning to tour with the  supergroup ,  Hail! , but on May 24, 2010, he was found dead in an  Urbandale, Iowa , hotel room. [63] [64]  Circumstances surrounding his death at the time were not immediately known; an  autopsy  suspected his death was not intentional but did not reveal the cause. [65] The day after his death, the remaining eight members of the band held a live, unmasked, press conference alongside Gray's widow and brother. [66]  On June 21, the cause of death was confirmed as an accidental overdose of  morphine  and synthetic morphine substitute  fentanyl . [67]

The band was hesitant to comment on the future of Slipknot. The members made conflicting statements in interviews; drummer Jordison told  The Pulse of Radio  "there is another Slipknot record already kinda in the making". [68]  Vocalist Taylor told  FMQB Productions he was "very conflicted about whether or not [he wants] to do anything with Slipknot". [69]  The band released their fourth video album  (sic)nesses  on September 28, 2010; [70]  it debuted at number one on the Billboard Top Music Video Charts. [71]  The DVD features Slipknot's entire live performance at the 2009  Download Festival  and a 45-minute film documenting their tour in support of  All Hope Is Gone , [72]  and served as a tribute to Paul Gray. [73]

Return to the stage,  Antennas to Hell  and  Knotfest  (2011–2012)

If this tour doesn't work, this band might be over—straight up. And I'm not gonna lie; I'm not the guy that's going to lie to the fans.

—Vocalist Corey Taylor on the future of Slipknot [74]

170px-CoreyTaylorGmm.jpg

Regarding the continuation of Slipknot, Taylor told  NME  Gray would want them to continue and he felt they should but he was ambivalent about returning to the band. [75]  Slipknot returned to touring in 2011, performing a small number of shows in Europe. They headlined the  Sonisphere Festival  and  Rock in Rio  alongside  Iron Maiden  and  Metallica , and performed at Belgium's Graspop Metal Meeting. [76] [77] [78]  Donnie Steele substituted for Gray in the concerts; he was positioned behind Jordison and obscured from the audience's view. [79] [80]

Slipknot also said the band would complete and release the band's fifth studio album, and that there were no plans to replace Gray. [81] [82]  Jordison said the writing process for the album had already begun and that he had written 17 songs. Slipknot performed at the  Mayhem Festival  tour of 2012. [83]

On May 29, 2012, Roadrunner Records posted a teaser video titled  Antennas to Hell  on its website. [84]  Later that day, on Twitter, Corey Taylor said Slipknot will release a greatest hits album on June 17, 2012. [84]  He also said the band was not yet recording new material but was putting together demos for a new album. [84]

Slipknot's first annual music festival, called  Knotfest , was held on August 17, 2012, at  Mid-America Motorplex  near  Pacific Junction, Iowa , and on August 18, 2012, in  Somerset, Wisconsin .  Deftones ,  Lamb of God , and  Serj Tankian  also performed at the festival. The festival shows also debuted a Slipknot museum. [85]  On 14, June 2013, Slipknot headlined the Download Festival for a second time. The band performed to roughly 90,000 people and was twice forced to stop the set—once in the middle of a song—to allow the front barricade, which had split open under crowd pressure, to be repaired. [86]

Jordison's departure,  .5: The Gray Chapter  and new members (2013–2016)

Production of the band's fifth album began in late 2013. Taylor described the album as "very dark" and a cross between  Iowa  and  Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) . [87]  Guitarist Jim Root did not participate in Stone Sour's January tour so he could write material for Slipknot. [88]

I want to make it very clear that  I Did Not Quit Slipknot . This band has been my life for the last 18 years, and I would never abandon it, or my fans.

— Joey Jordison  via Facebook [89]

On December 12, 2013, the band announced through its official website that Joey Jordison had left the band after 18 years, citing personal reasons. [90] [91] [92]  On his official Facebook page, Jordison later said he "did not quit Slipknot" and that he was "shocked" and "blindsided" by the news. Both Jordison and Slipknot independently promised to release further details about the split. [89]  Taylor said Jordison would not be appearing on the new album because he did not participate in any songwriting sessions before his departure. [93]  After years of both sides being silent and evasive as to the reasons for his leaving the band, Jordison revealed in June 2016 that he suffered from  Transverse myelitis , a neurological disease that cost him the ability to play the drums toward the end of his time with Slipknot. However, Jordison played drums in the blackened death metal act  Sinsaenum , which he joined in 2016.

In July 2014, Slipknot began releasing teasers for the new album on the band's website and social media using cryptic messages and gory imagery. [94] [95] " The Negative One ", the band's first song in six years, was released on August 1; [96]  it was accompanied by a music video directed by Crahan that was released four days later. The video did not feature any band members. [97]  On August 24, Slipknot released an official radio single titled " The Devil In I ", and the name of the upcoming album was announced as  .5: The Gray Chapter  on  iTunes , with an expected release date of October 28. [98] [99]  The release was later preponed to October 17 for the Netherlands and Australia, October 20 for the UK and October 21 worldwide. [100]  "The Negative One" was nominated for the 2014 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance at the  57th Annual Grammy Awards . [101]

Slipknot began touring North America in support of the album on October 25 at the second iteration of Knotfest. [102]  The tour dubbed the "Prepare for Hell" was co-headlined by  Korn  with  King 810  as support. [103] [104]  The band also performed at 2015's  Soundwave festival  in Australia. [105]  A bassist and drummer were brought in to replace Gray and Jordison respectively, Crahan designing a mask that would differentiate them from the band. [106]  The official video for "The Devil In I", featuring musicians wearing modified versions of the band's old masks—with the exception of Taylor, Wilson and Crahan who all wore new masks — was released on September 12. Fans speculated upon the identities of the drummer and bassist shown in the video but the band did not officially name them. [107] [108]

Taylor later said he was "upset" at the leak of the identity of the bassist, alleged to be  Alessandro Venturella  because of a unique tattoo on his hand, [109] though he'd later clarify that he meant that in jest. [110]  Root told  Guitar World  the drummer's identity would not be released, and that the bassist and the drummer were not permanent members of the band. [111]  On December 3, a former Slipknot road crew member posted a photograph of a touring band personnel list that confirmed bassist Alessandro Venturella and drummer  Jay Weinberg  were members of the tour. [112]

On March 11, 2015, while the band was not touring, guitarist Mick Thomson was hospitalized after a drunken knife fight with his brother at Thomson's home in Iowa. The pair sustained serious, but non life-threatening, injuries. [113]  On August 2, 2015, during a concert in Hartford, Connecticut, the band was forced to stop performing after Venturella was suddenly rushed to hospital, after undergoing a medical emergency. After 20 minutes, singer Taylor told the audience the band would continue the concert, performing without Venturella. [114]  It was later discovered that Venturella had collapsed because of extreme dehydration. [115]

On September 25, 2016, the band performed at their annual festival Knotfest, which was altered to include Ozzfest this year. They performed the  Iowa  album in its entirety. [116]  In the meanwhile, Crahan made his directorial debut with the feature film  Officer Downe , based on a graphic novel of the same name and starring actor  Kim Coates . [117]  In November 2016, Slipknot percussionist Shawn "Clown" Crahan revealed during an interview with  Rolling Stone  that he and fellow guitarist Jim Root would be teaming up in February 2017 to begin writing new material for a new Slipknot album because "we want to write." [118]

We Are Not Your Kind  and Fehn's departure (2017–2020)

Slipknot singer  Corey Taylor  regrouped with his other band  Stone Sour  in 2017, and they released their album  Hydrograd  on June 30. Talking about his first work in cinema and the other Slipknot members' plans, in an interview with WRIF's Meltdown, Crahan revealed that "we're beginning to write some music for Slipknot for the new record. We have songs that we've written that are amazing." [119]  In December 2017, Crahan appeared on  The Jasta Show  podcast, where he stated that the next Slipknot album could be his last with the band. [120]

Corey Taylor revealed in October 2018 that the band would enter the studio in early 2019, with a targeted release for their sixth album that same year, followed by a world tour. [121]  On October 31, the single " All Out Life " was released, as was an accompanying music video. [122]  On March 4, 2019, the band announced that the release date for the next album would be August 9, 2019, and that they would be embarking on the Knotfest Roadshow along with support by Gojira, Volbeat, and Behemoth to support the album. [123]  On March 7, Slipknot were revealed to be the opening act for Metallica's six WorldWired Tour dates in Australia and New Zealand from October 17 through October 31. [124]

On March 14, 2019,  Chris Fehn  filed a lawsuit against the band citing withheld payments. [125]  Fehn specifically accused Corey Taylor and Shawn Crahan of setting up several band-related business entities, in different states, that collect money from the band. [125]  Fehn called for full forensic accounting to be done on all of the band's companies and assets in order to collect any profits and damages he may be owed. [125]  On that same day, Taylor responded via Twitter with a tweet stating, "You're gonna read a lot of bullshit today. This is all I'll say. JUST YOU WAIT TIL THE TRUTH COMES OUT. Long Live The Knot". [126]  On March 18, 2019, the band officially announced via their website that Fehn was no longer a member of the band, stating, "Slipknot's focus is on making album #6, and our upcoming shows around the world, our best ever. Chris knows why he is no longer a part of Slipknot. We are disappointed that he chose to point fingers and manufacture claims, rather than doing what was necessary to continue to be a part of Slipknot. We would have preferred he not take the path that he has, but evolution in all things is a necessary part of this life. Long Live The Knot". [127]  However, a few days later, the message was removed from the website and according to Fehn's lawyer, the percussionist's employment status with the band had not changed since his initial filing. [128]  By May 2019, Fehn's employment status with the band had apparently changed, as evident by his missing name on the band's Instagram posts for their new masks. [ citation needed ]  He was replaced by a percussionist, whose identity was concealed, [129]  who the fans have dubbed "Tortilla Man". [130] Loudwire  has reported that fans have linked his identity as  Michael Pfaff , a former member of Crahan's side project  Dirty Little Rabbits . [131] [132]  The band officially confirmed Pfaff's identity on March 16, 2022, almost two years later. [133]

On May 13, 2019, the band teased something was coming on May 16, ahead of their performance on  Jimmy Kimmel Live! , as well as screenshots of their new masks. [134]  On that day, the album's title was revealed to be  We Are Not Your Kind , along with its tracklist and a music video for " Unsainted ", where the new masks and outfits for the nine band members were shown for the first time, including an as-yet-unknown new percussionist. On July 22, they released the second single from their upcoming album, titled " Solway Firth ". This was accompanied by a music video which featured live footage from their 2019 shows as well as clips and audio from  The Boys . On August 5, " Birth of the Cruel " was released as the album's third single, accompanied by a music video. [135]  On August 9, four days after they had released "Birth of the Cruel", they released their sixth album  We Are Not Your Kind .

In August 2019, Crahan announced the band will release an experimental album of outtakes from the 2008  All Hope Is Gone  sessions, titled  Look Outside Your Window . The album was recorded with just 4 members (Crahan, Taylor, Root, and Wilson), in a different studio away from the other members, is expected to have 11 tracks that Taylor described as having a " Radiohead  vibe", [136] [137]  and Crahan saying in 2018 "it is not a Slipknot album". [138]  The band also released a twenty-minute experimental  short film  directed by Crahan and titled  Pollution . One of the segments of the film is the music video for the song, " Nero Forte ", which was released as the album's fourth and final single on December 16, 2019. [111] [139]

The End, So Far  and Craig Jones' departure (2021–present)

On May 19, 2021, Shawn Crahan revealed that the band had been currently making "god music". [140]  In an article published by  Loudwire  on June 9, 2021, Shawn Crahan revealed that a new Slipknot album would 'hopefully' be released in 2021. He also added that the band would be parting ways with Roadrunner Records following the release of the album. [141]

On July 26, 2021, the band's former drummer, Joey Jordison, died in his sleep at the age of 46. [142] [143]

In November 2021, the band started teasing new material on a new domain  thechapeltownrag.com . [144]  Several snippets of a song were shown on the website leading to speculation of a new single that the band would later confirm on November 4, with the single titled " The Chapeltown Rag " slated for release the following day alongside its live debut at the  Knotfest Roadshow  in  Los Angeles ,  California , on November 5, 2021. [145]  In December 2021, Taylor revealed that the band were planning on mixing their seventh studio album in January, and hoped to release it by April 2022. He also stated that he preferred the material on their forthcoming seventh studio album to that on  We Are Not Your Kind . [146]

On July 19, 2022, the band announced their seventh album, titled  The End, So Far , along with the album's second single " The Dying Song (Time to Sing) ". [147]  On August 5, 2022, the third single from the album, " Yen ", was released. [148]  The album was released on September 30, 2022. [147] [148]  It is Slipknot's final album for Roadrunner, whose contract with the label expired on April 1, 2023. [149]  The band's final single for the label, "Bone Church" was surprise-released on February 2, 2023. [150]

On June 7, 2023, the band announced that it had parted ways with sampler and keyboardist  Craig "133" Jones , who had been a member since 1996; [151] the social media posts about Jones' departure have been subsequently deleted within the hour. [152]  The same day, the band played a show at the  Nova Rock Festival  in  Austria , with someone who appeared to be a new member of the band replacing Jones. [153]  There has been speculation on who the new member is, with the main contenders being  Zac Baird ,  Nathan Church  or Jones himself in a new mask. [154]

Musical style

Slipknot is often considered a  nu metal  band. [155] [156] [157] [158]  The band's members prefer to distance themselves musically from other nu metal bands such as  Korn  and  Limp Bizkit . Slipknot describes its sound as "metal metal" and regards the link to nu metal as coincidental and a result of nu metal's emergence being concurrent with that of Slipknot. [159]  The band's sound typically features a heavily  down-tuned  guitar setup, a large  percussive  section,  sampling , keyboards and  DJing/turntablism . [160]  Using a variety of vocal styles, the music typically features  growled vocals ,  screaming , backing vocals, as well as melodic singing. [160]  The band has continually experimented with its sound, most notably developing tracks led by acoustic guitars and melodic singing that first appeared on  Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses) . [161]

The album  All Hope Is Gone  is considered a  groove metal  album [162]  with elements of  death metal [163]  and  thrash metal . [164]  The band has also been described as  heavy metal , [165] [166] [167]   alternative metal [168] [169] [170] [171]  groove metal, [172] [173] [174]  death metal, [174] [175] [176]   hard rock , [177] [178]   grindcore , [175] [176]  thrash metal, [174]   metalcore , [179]  and  rap metal . [180]

Slipknot's lyrics are generally very aggressive; they sometimes include profanity while exploring themes such as  darkness ,  nihilism , anger, disaffection, love,  misanthropy , and  psychosis . [19] [161]  They often draw upon topics including the  music industry , politics, personal strife, and reflection, among others. [181]  Rick Anderson of Allmusic said, "those lyrics that are discernible are not generally quotable on a family website". [32]  On  Vol. 3 , Taylor deliberately avoided using profanity in response to claims he relied on it. [182]

170px-Kiss_original_lineup_%281976%29.jpg

Slipknot cited both  Korn 's  self-titled album  of 1994 and  Limp Bizkit 's album  Three Dollar Bill, Y'all$  of 1997 as major influences. [183] [184] [185]  However, the band's biggest influence, both on their image and music, has been singer  Mike Patton and his bands  Mr. Bungle ,  Fantômas  and  Faith No More . [186] [187] [188] [189]  Corey Taylor even stated that watching Faith No More perform on the  1990 MTV Video Music Awards  saved his life. [190]  In an interview in 2000 Patton called the Slipknot members "really nice guys". [191]

The band  Kiss  has been a big influence for Slipknot, both musically and image-wise. Several band members have in numerous interviews stated the impact Kiss had on them when growing up. In an interview with Revolver magazine,  Joey Jordison  said that "I saw Kiss on The Dick Clark Show in like, 1980 or something, and  Kiss Alive!  was the first record of theirs I had. This was back when you bought cassettes or records, and I still have my original cassette copy of it. And I tell you what, it just blew my mind! The cover tells you everything you need to know; it just makes you want to listen to the whole fucking record. And these guys look like fucking demons — you don't know when you're a kid and you're watching them on TV that it's just guys in makeup. So yeah, it was inspiring back then. They were a huge influence on me when I was a kid. And that record came out in 1975, so I was always like, "That's fucking badass — one of my favorite records of all time came out the year I was born!". [192]  In another interview with Loudwire, he also added that after listening to  Kiss Alive!  for the first, he was "changed forever, and then [he] just became completely engulfed in metal." Guitarist Mick Thomson revealed in  Metal Hammer  that Kiss'  Destroyer  was the first album he ever bought, and when talking about Kiss'  Alive II ; he stated that "...the artwork on Alive II with Gene's sweat running, the blood coming from his face and the make-up running had a profound influence on me. You only have to look at my own band to see how much so." [193] Vocalist Corey Taylor has stated that Kiss were a huge influence on both him and the rest of the band [194] [195]  and he has also covered multiple Kiss songs over the years; both as a solo artist as well as with Stone Sour, in which Slipknot guitarist Jim Root also played at the time.

Many authors single out the massive influence that experimental band Mr. Bungle has had on Slipknot; in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the members of Mr. Bungle donned strange masks (often clown and  gimp  ones), costumes (including jumpsuits) and hid their identities behind obscure pseudonyms. All of these were major features on their  1991 self-titled album  cycle. [196] [197] [198] [199] [200]  Their creepy music videos from that record, such as " Travolta " which was  banned on MTV , also pointed out at what would be the future image of Slipknot. [201] [202] [note 1]  In the same way, the musical influence of Mr. Bungle is evident in the eclecticism and adventurousness throughout  Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. , Slipknot's first release of 1996, although the band added more metallic elements. A few songs on that album also hint at the eccentric catchiness of Faith No More and other  funk metal  bands. [204] [205] [206]

150px-91SantaClaraMike.jpg

While Slipknot was making its debut studio release, the entire band attended one of the first shows by  avant-garde grindcore supergroup  Fantômas -composed of Patton,  Slayer 's  Dave Lombardo ,  Melvins '  Buzz Osborne  and Mr. Bungle's  Trevor Dunn -which greatly influenced them at the time. [207] [186]  From that album on, Slipknot has displayed a much more straightforward, extreme metal sound, largely because of producer Ross Robinson, [185]  and some writers have identified the influence of Faith No More on some tracks' structures and alternating melodies from  Iowa  and  Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) . [208]  On the other hand, the experimental imprint of Bungle has become rare, [209]  but it made a sudden reappearance on 2019's  We Are Not Your Kind . [210] [211] [212]

The members of Slipknot are also influenced by  Kiss , [192] [193] [213] [214]   Black Sabbath , [192] [215] [213] [185]   Slayer , [192] [215] [185] [214] Jimi Hendrix , [216]   Deicide , [193] [217]   Pantera , [184]   Anthrax , [216] [215] [184]   Metal Church , [184]   Judas Priest , [184]   Megadeth , [184] Sepultura , [184]   White Zombie , [184]   Alice in Chains , [218]   Malevolent Creation , [193]   Danny Heifetz , [215]   Nine Inch Nails , [219] [217] Neurosis , [219]   Led Zeppelin , [192] [215] [214]   Queen , [220]   The Melvins , [192]   N.W.A , [221]   Skinny Puppy , [217]   Mayhem , [215] [214]   Dimmu Borgir , [214]   Iron Maiden , [184]   Emperor , [214]   Beastie Boys , [217]   Morbid Angel , [217]   Cannibal Corpse , [175]   Misfits , [175]   Gorefest , [175]   Run-DMC , [217]   Acid Bath , [222]   Black Flag , [213]   Dead Kennedys , [213]  and  Metallica . [192] [215] [193] [184]  Taylor has spoken of his admiration for vocalists  Freddie Mercury ,  Bruce Dickinson ,  David Lee Roth ,  Bruce Springsteen  and  James Hetfield . [223]  In 1999, Chris Fehn said Sid Wilson is influenced by  jungle music  and  rave music . [185]

From the start, Slipknot has carved out its own unique space in the world of metal, taking things to a whole new level.

Slipknot was formed in 1995 by local Des Moines musicians Shawn Crahan and Paul Gray. The pair brought on other local musicians and started to experiment with their sound.

After self-financing the band’s debut album, Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., in 1996 and failing to pick up any major attention, Slipknot changed musical direction, adding melodic vocals to their music. The band also went through many lineup changes before settling on the core nine members of the group: Sid Wilson, Joey Jordison, Paul Gray, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor.

This new musical style and the band’s strong set of members attracted the attention of Roadrunner Records. which signed the band for a seven-album deal. The band’s first album on the label, Slipknot, was released in 1999 and did favorably on the U.S. album charts for a first album. Nonetheless, the album went on to eventually be certified platinum after the band’s extensive touring schedule picked up hordes of fans between 1999 and 2000.

This large fan base proved vital with the release of the band’s second album, Iowa, in 2001, which shot to number one in the UK album charts and hit number three in the U.S.

Slipknot’s popularity and mainstream success have earned the band recognition from multiple awarding bodies such as the Kerrang! Awards and even the Grammy Awards after the band’s 2005 single “Before I Forget” from its album Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) won them an award for Best Metal Performance.

Inspired by the likes of Black Sabbath, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin, the band has put its own chaotic stamp on the genre of nu metal. Slipknot is a band that is prepared to constantly experiment and evolve, and its fans love them because of this.

With a recently released album — The End, So Far — Slipknot is taking to the stage in a global tour, continuing to deliver a show unlike any other. For Slipknot maggots, there has never been a better time than now to find a nearby concert.

Live reviews

Origionally written for kingcrimsonprog.wordpress.com

Since I hadn’t seen them since Vol. 3, there is a lot of material I have never caught live yet. As I said, I like every Slipknot album. (Probably every Slipknot song if you don’t count demos and remixes). Unfortunately, they didn’t play anything off of ‘Gray Chapter this time, which I was a bit gutted by. I really like that album and would have loved to see something like ‘Custer,’ ‘AOV’ or ‘Sarcastrophe’ live. ‘Custer’ especially. From the first time I heard it I said to myself ”that is a song that will be in their setlists forevermore.” They also only played one song from All Hope Is Gone. I guess that’s reason enough to try see them a few more times, as I really want to catch more songs I haven’t heard live before. I’m keen to hear it all.

But given how great the new album is, I was most keen to see material from We Are Not Your Kind live. I was thinking about how much I wanted it on such a regular basis since end of the week that the album was released and it had all started to click with me. Turns out I was in luck, because if you count the 2018 stand-alone single ‘All Out Life’ which technically isn’t on the album (but which features the lyric ‘we are not your kind’ repeatedly chanted and I always mentally count as being part of that album, and have attached to the album in my itunes and on my phone and just pretend it is on the album anyway), then they played 5 new songs. Aforementioned ‘All Out Life.’ Big single ‘Unsainted,’ which opened the show. The dark, weird, almost formless album closer ‘Solway Firth.’ The groovy ‘Birth Of The Cruel’ and the stompy new single ‘Nero Forte.’ It was great to see this much new material live. It shows you how much confidence the band must have in the new album, and given the audience reaction, this confidence was well placed.

Not counting intros and outros over the speakers, there were 17 tracks. 6 of which I had never seen live before. Pretty great value. No wonder they didn’t have room for much material off All Hope’ or ‘Gray Chapter. The rest of the set featured the big singles from Vol 3; ‘Duality,’ ‘Before I Forget’ and ‘Vermillion’ as well as many classic concert favourites from the debut like ‘(Sic),’ ‘Surfacing’ and ‘Eyeless’ and topped off with a few of the heavier numbers from Iowa, like ‘Disasterpiece’ and ‘People=Shit.’

Slipknot are pretty great at mixing up sets, and not just playing the same thing every tour, swapping in a surprise or two, and dropping a few expected tunes now and again for a deep cut. The (sort of) surprises in the set were first album bonus-track ‘Eeyore’ and Iowa deepish-cut ‘New Abortion’ although I have seen both live before and both have been on official live releases so not super surprising if you want to be pedantic, but I was satisfied. In terms of dropping an expected tune, this time they dropped ‘Spit It Out’ which is almost unfathomable, as therefore they didn’t do the ‘’Jump The Fuck Up’’ moment, (where they make the whole crowd crouch for a few minutes then jump up in unison) but I’ve had that three times and on all their live albums too, so I was glad to lose it if it meant more time for new songs.

In terms of stage show, it was the biggest and best I’d ever seen them. There were videoscreens all over the place (even on the drums). There was pyro and steam. There were fireworks. There was a Nikki Sixx style bass guitar flamethrower like on Motley Crue’s The End DVD. There were treadmills which the more expendable members like the DJ, Sid, would go and play about on when not needed musically. He did the moonwalk on a treadmill at one point. Their setlist didn’t feature many turn-table focused songs this time so I guess he’s got to do something. Clown got a flaming baseball bat out for the keg smashes on ‘Duality.’

Performance and sound wise, it was really good. That’s not always a given. As much as love this band, they aren’t what I’d call consistent. Some bands are just perfect every single time (Hatebreed spring to mind). Slipknot are not one of those bands. I mean, when you have 9 members, complex awkward songs with atypical structures, and a singer inside a mask running around, its hard to get everything sounding perfect…

If you look across all of Slipknot’s official and unofficial live releases, you’ll notice they have been really hit and miss over the years in terms of both vocals and audio mix. Even on just their Voliminal DVD, which features footage from a few different shows, the live stuff goes from amazing to quite poor. The 9.0 live album which I mentioned earlier features material from across a whole tour, and that album has quite poor live vocals and subpar sound mixes. Conversely though the Disasterpeices and (Sic)nesses DVDs have superb live vocals and mixes and are absolutely must-own. The pro shot live stuff from various festivals on the first two album cycles is really mixed also. I remember MTV2 used to have footage of the band on the Iowa cycle in Germany, where Corey’s vocals were really muffled and the kick drums overpowered all the guitars. When I first got into them, on the debut album cycle, the only live stuff available was bootlegs, and they were always pretty rough. You could get pirate CDs from shows like their first time in London or from dates on the US Ozzfest, but you could tell from the CD that Corey was running around, bouncing and going crazy so much, that the vocals would suffer. Even my own live experiences of the band were mixed. When I saw them live myself in Belfast the mix and vocals were brilliant and its still one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. When I saw them headlining on the Vol. 3 cycle, the vocals were poor (he has discussed in interviews over the years that he was drinking heavily in that period) but the mix was great. When I saw them supporting Metallica on that same album cycle, the mix was poor but the vocals were good. As I said, its not a given.

I guess there’s a lot of variables for the soundmen to get right and lots of chances to get it wrong. Depending on how much running and bouncing singer Corey Taylor does, and how his mask affects the microphones, there’s a big gap between his best and his worst shows.

However, tonight it was great. It was pretty close to a perfect show. I mean, if I had to pick pedantic holes in it then I guess the guitar-intro to ‘Surfacing’ sounded a bit weird, and the vocals on the chorus to ‘Nero Forte’ were a bit thin, but otherwise it was magnificent.

The sound mix was perfectly balanced. Even the additional percussion was actually audible and you could tell why they have three drummers. The bass was thick. The guitars were clear and didn’t go muddy. The drum kit was powerful and you could pick every element out individually. The vocals were just right. I couldn’t have asked for a better mix.

The band were energetic and enthusiastic and played like a band on the rise. Drums were absolutely battered. Riffs were practically thrown into the crowd. I guess buoyed by the success of the new album, they are revitalised and fired-up. This was definitely the 2nd-best I ever seen them live; sceond only to that very first time I saw them, back in Belfast in 2002, which boasted many more songs from my favourite album, Iowa, in the set, and featured the classic line-up when they were still mysterious and I was wide-eyed and young. (And to be fair, my memory of that could in fact be a little clouded in a rose-tinted teenage nostalgia).

I always regretted not seeing them live on the last two album cycles, but I would have been heartbroken to miss them this time. Thank goodness for the weird phone/website discrepancy! This was awesome. One of the bands that have meant the most to me in my whole life, playing brilliantly, with a great setlist and sounding great. This is going to be a show I remember for a long time.

While still buzzed with energy from Carolina Rebellion 2015 I was on my songkick, browsing the next shows for some of the artists. I tapped on the image for Slipknot and began scrolling their tour dates. I litterally jumped to my feet when I saw they were coming to Virginia Beach. I knew I wasn't missing that show. I tapped on the link to get tickets and a short, very excited while later I was the proud owner of 2 pit tickets for my daughter and me. The songkick and live nation apps made it so easy to get tickets.

On the day of the show our energy was off the Richter. The other bands that played were perfect for priming the crowd for one of the best performances I've ever seen. We stood just a foot from the baracade and the energy was physically palpable as we waited while the stage hands made quick work of converting a simple stage into a formidable backdrop equivalent to the stuff nightmares are made of.

The buzzing started and the crowd roared and the logo encrusted curtain opened. One by one they appeared and carried us all away, into their world. We embarked on an ear bleeding, mind blowing, perfectly performed chaotic journey that could rival a Rob Zombie movie. It wasn't just a show, it was an adventure full of flashing lights, flames so big we could feel the heat, and Slipknot hypnotizing our minds and our bodies with their dark, poetic, brain melting music. Riffs and lyrics not just entering our ear drums but leeching into every fiber of our human form, putting us all into a head banging trance as only slipknot is capable of doing.

By the end of the night our voices were gone from singing along, our ears buzzing with the echo of what we just witnessed. And our minds, we'll they will never be the same again. Will I go see another Slipknot show, absolutely every chance I get and I will be in the pit for every one of them. It was the most epic night of my life. Thank you, Slipknot, for one hell of an adventure. Let's do it again sometime, real soon.

Slipknot's reputation is legendary. This cult classic band has developed a huge following and is one of the most successful metal and hard rock bands in history.

Slipknot's live show is an incredible experience. Frontman Corey Taylor is so energetic and gets the audience basically eating out of the palm of his hand. The rest of the band are like an intense ball of anger and energy.

The band often opens up with their best seller, "Duality", a high energy, fast paced nu metal track that crushes the audience, especially those of us in the epic mosh pit.

In that moment, you get absorbed: Slipknot are chugging away with their roaring vocals wailing and wailing on, striking every nerve in my body and making me want to thrash and scream the lyrics along with all of my passion.

Seeing this band live and in person is an incredible experience, and I seriously recommend every metal fan to go see them whenever they are given a chance. They are incredible. Their presence is phenomenal and their loud, abrasive sound is so clear and powerful.

Slipknot have always had a distinct style and it is heavy and far above other bands in the genre. The singer, Corey Taylor, has a lot of drive, and ambition, and the band is very creative. I truly cannot recommend this band enough.

This was a really, amazing concert, Slipknot is one of the best live bands in the world in my opinion. They're an energetic band and they know how to bring the noise. The guys in the band are really nice to the fans. I hung around near the tours buses after the show and met Mick and Jay, who were more than willing to come say 'hello' and sign things. Really great guys.

The show itself was perfect, but I do need to warn you if you wanna be in the pit, you gotta be careful and stay safe. The crowd does get really rowdy and people will shove. Careful with the crowd surfers too, try to avoid getting kicked in the face. Other than that, everyone in the crowd was really kind and will help you out if there's a lot of pushing.

This was my first Slipknot concert and my fourth concert I've been to. This band really did make quite an impression, and from everyone that's seen them live before, they aren't lying at how incredible these guys are. Chris was very active the entire show and so was Corey, despite his broken neck. The guys will recognize you if you call their name or something, Mick and Jim did wave and point at my friends and I.

I really urge you to see Slipknot live if your considering it. I promise you won't regret it.

A giant curtain concealed the stage for a half hour as the men in masks built their carnival of horror, so it wasn’t until 9:30pm when Van Halen’s “Runnin’ With the Devil” predicted the start of the show. Still in secretive mode, “XIX” was piped over the PA before any member of the band was shown. As the anticipation became something you could feel in the air, I wondered if Slipknot would deliver. I always have a hard time enjoying bands that I’ve never really listened to, so I couldn’t help but doubt that some nu metal band from Iowa would entertain me more than Lamb of God. But as the curtain split in half, to reveal an 8-piece band surrounded by a river of fire, I realized that Slipknot were in another league when it came to stage presence. The multi-level setup reminded me of King Diamond’s latest tour, but with a trio of percussionists (two of whom were beating kegs from spinning platforms), more pyrotechnics than I’ve ever seen at Red Rocks, a giant horned mask and funhouse mirror, it was the metal concert equivalent of Cirque du Soleil.

As usual...SLIPKNOT shows why they are one of the biggest headlining acts in metal today...In metal history...The set list was a perfect blend touching on every one of their albums...Lamb Of God was also phenomenal as always...I missed the first 2 bands but I'm glad I didn't have to spend one minute more than I had to at that god awful venue...$60 ticket and what a terrible setup...It's almost a mile walk from anywhere you park to the door...And the staff??? WOW!!! Slower than any trip to the DMV and even worse attitude...If you're gonna charge me $13 for a beer that costs $1.29 at the store LEARN HOW TO POUR!!! The merch booth staff were on point though...However...I'll never attend ANY show at this horrible venue as long as I live...Had that not been 2 of the best bands on this planet I would've had a lot worse to say...

First Niagara Pavillion is ill equipped to provide concert goers with a topnotch music experience. Halfway through Marilyn Manson's set the power went out and we sat in the dark for 2 hours waiting for the show to resume. Meanwhile, we stood, drenched with rain, watching drunken fools slide down the hill on mudslides and throw mudballs at everyone. Finally, they announced the show was cancelled due to lack of power, and the mud-sliders started chanting "F*ck You", kicking over garbage cans and breaking things. The worst concert of my life, and it had zero to do with any of the live acts. Actually, what I saw of Of Mice & Men, which I wasn't really familiar with, was pretty good. I've never really cared for Manson, but the show before the power went out was pretty good.

Slipknot were amazing, first time seeing them live. However... the sound system was dire, we really had to shift forward to hear what was going on. We could only hear the bassline and some drums. Couldn’t hear guitars or vocals clear. My videos picked the sound up a little, but you can hear everyone talking it was that quiet. Only reason I say this is that I saw Korn play with Limp Bizkit at this same venue (Arena Birmingham) in 2016... and Ray Luziers drums standing at the back of the venue near where you walk in, his snares and kicks hit you in the chest like thunder, and you could hear the clarity of the vocals, guitars, bass, everything. This time around for Slipknot unfortunately the sound just wasn’t on par which is a shame

I've seen Slipknot quite a few times now, and they ALLWAYS deliver a remarkable show, with proper energy, musical quality in their performance, and almost theatrical charismatics that keeps blowing me away.

The Telenor Arena's sound ALMOST ruined the experience, as it just can't handle this sort of scale audience, the whole audio-experience seems dull and horribly low quality if you move anywhere towards the middle of the crowd or backwards in the standing section of the audience.

First part of slipknot and All of behemoth was simply drowned out, and they somehow managed to turn the sound up a notch throughout the show.. but I won't be going back there, unless they either lower the prices or upp their sound-quality.

Slipknot Announce The Knotfest Roadshow 2021

Facebook icon

Tour Kicks Off On September 28 In Tinley Park, IL

Slipknot to headline, special guests include killswitch engage, fever 333 and code orange, pre-sale to knotfest subscribers; june 2 / general on-sale – june 4 knotfestroadshow.com.

SLIPKNOT , one of the most thrilling and visceral musical collectives on the planet, are excited to announce a return to the road for their incendiary 2021 incarnation of the KNOTFEST ROADSHOW . Support comes from three Grammy-nominated heavy music luminaries, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE , FEVER 333 and CODE ORANGE .

The 28-date run, produced by Live Nation, kicks off following the band’s previously announced KNOTFEST IOWA hometown show in Des Moines on September 25th. The KNOTFEST ROADSHOW ’s first official date happens at Tinley Park, IL on September 28th, with the tour then snaking its way across the US, wrapping up in Arizona in early November.

SLIPKNOT frontman, Corey Taylor informs us:

“With the world opening up, it’s time to get excited about LIFE again. To get back to LIFE again. This tour is a long time coming and we hope you’re as excited to see it as we are to play it. Stay safe, stay (sic) and we’ll see you soon.”

Tickets will be available on pre-sale to KNOTFEST subscribers from 10am local time on June 2nd, with a general on-sale from 10am local on June 4th, over at KnotfestRoadshow.com.

Last week SLIPKNOT also confirmed the exciting news that they have returned to the studio and are working on new material, with artistic visionary and percussionist, M.Shawn ‘Clown’ Crahan confirming to UK media that they are making “God music”. Be the first to see exclusive ‘behind the scenes’ footage of the band at work by subscribing to join the community over at KNOTFEST.COM , where you’ll also be eligible to pre-order both KNOTFEST ROADSHOW and KNOTFEST IOWA tickets, ahead of the on-sale date to the general public.

SLIPKNOT ’s live show continues to thrill their fiercely loyal following, selling out bigger venues with each outing. Reviews of their last sold-out European arena tour, which was completed mere weeks before the world locked down, were unanimous in their praise, with Kerrang! awarding London’s sold-out 20,000 cap O2 Arena show a 5/5 rating, declaring “there is no better metal band on earth than this.”

The band’s current album, the critically lauded We Are Not Your Kind is highlighted by the singles, Nero Forte , Solway Firth , and the LP’s lead track Unsainted , which was recently certified Gold in the U.S. The three tracks feature an M. Shawn Crahan-directed official music video, each of which trended worldwide on YouTube (all videos) upon release – with Unsainted at #1 globally for a full 24 hours.

About SLIPKNOT : SLIPKNOT sit alongside musical institutions like Metallica and Iron Maiden, as one of a select few bands whose legacy is secured within heavy music’s elite. The band emerged at the end of the 20th Century from the American mid-western town of Des Moines, IA and quickly established themselves as the most enigmatic, provocative and aggressive music collective of the modern era. 1999’s eponymous debut is widely viewed as a modern day classic and was honoured by Metal Hammer magazine as the ‘Best Debut of the Last 25 Years.’ The release racked up double RIAA platinum certification in the US, with many of SLIPKNOT ’s subsequent releases achieving platinum status both in the US and around the globe. To date, the band have been nominated for 10 Grammy Awards (winning in 2006 for ‘Before I Forget’), as well as scoring 12 Platinum and 41 Gold album certifications around the world and over 3.2 billion YouTube views and counting. SLIPKNOT ’s fanbase is as unwavering as it is ubiquitous – the band’s most recent studio album, 2019’s ‘We Are Not Your Kind’ debuted at #1 in the Official Album Charts of 12 countries around the world, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada and Mexico and in the Top 5 of an additional 12 countries including Germany, France and Sweden.

About KNOTFEST: KNOTFEST is SLIPKNOT ’s own self-curated, destination festival brand, currently held in four international locations; the US, Japan, Mexico and Colombia, with the inaugural Brazilian event set to happen in December 2021. Plans for the first UK event are still underway, having been postponed in 2019 by Covid-19 restrictions. Designed as an immersive, unforgettable, ‘dark carnival experience’, the event invites you into SLIPKNOT ’s apocalyptic underworld where stunning visuals, fire breathers and nightmarish creatures on stilts set the stage for an intoxicating and memorable weekend of live music.

There was never a band like SLIPKNOT, and there will never be another. Like a spore out of the Midwest, they’ve quietly bloomed into the most uncompromising, undeniable, and unique presence on the planet whose influence transcends genres and generations. Since sowing the seeds for revolution in Iowa during 1999, these musical outliers have captured a GRAMMY Award alongside 10 nominations, scored 12 Platinum / 41 Gold album certifications around the world, and logged over 8.5 billion global streams and 3.5 billion video views to date - unprecedented for a rock act in this generation or any other. Rolling Stone cited the seminal platinum-selling 2001 album Iowa among “The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time,” while The Ringer attested, “They’re the most important heavy band of their era.” In addition to marking the group’s third consecutive #1 debut on the Billboard Top 200, their sixth full-length album, WE ARE NOT YOUR KIND, bowed at #1 in twelve countries worldwide in 2019. Selling out shows on multiple continents, they deliver an irreplicable multi-sensory experience on tour and through their own festival KNOTFEST. In 2023, they returned with their seventh album THE END, SO FAR, SLIPKNOT, and nothing has been the same since.

Slipknot to Keep Knotfest Roadshow Rolling Through This Fall

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Slipknot have extended their 2022 Knotfest Roadshow with a fall leg set to kick off in late September.

The new run of dates will launch Sept. 20 at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, with shows planned in cities like Austin, Dallas, Albuquerque, and Phoenix. The run will wrap Oct. 7 at the FivePoint Amphitheater in Irvine, California.

Slipknot will be joined on these dates by Ice Nine Kills and Crown the Empire. Tickets will go on sale June 17 at 10 a.m. local time, while a presale will run June 14 through June 16. Full information is on the Knotfest website .

Slipknot kicked off their 2022 Knotfest Roadshow earlier this year with a run of 38 shows spread out over two legs between March and June (In This Moment and Jinjer provided support on the first leg, while Cypress Hill and Ho99o9 joined for the second). There are still a handful of dates left on the ongoing second leg, which wraps on June 18 in Chula Vista, California. After that, Slipknot will play the Machaca Festival in Monterey, Mexico, before heading over to Europe for a slew of summer gigs.

While Slipknot have stayed busy on the road, they’ve been relatively quiet on the studio front. Last November, the group released a new song, “The Chapeltown Rag,” which marked their first bit of music since 2019, when they dropped their most recent album, We Are Not Your Kind .

Slipknot planning 2024 world tour to mark 25th anniversary of Roadrunner debut

Corey Taylor accidentally revealed band’s plans during recent interview

Slipknot's 1999 self-titled debut album, and Corey Taylor onstage

It appears that Slipknot are plotting a series of shows to celebrate the release of their 1999 self-titled debut album.

On June 16, vocalist Corey Taylor revealed the band’s plans to mark the occasion with a world tour in an interview with Chaoszine backstage at Copenhagen’s Copenhell festival .

“Right now, Slipknot’s kind of wrapping up a little bit,” said Taylor ( as transcribed by Blabbermouth ). “Next year, I know we're talking about doing a handful of shows all over the world because it's gonna be the 25th anniversary of the first album. “Now, don't quote me on that,” he added, catching himself. “Best way to make God laugh is to announce your plans out loud. But that's what we're hinting at. It’s what we're talking about.”

During the interview, Taylor praised the Slipknot’s as-yet-named new member who recently replaced sampler and keyboardist Craig Jones, who left the band on June 7.

“Obviously, any time you have a change like that, it makes you have to kind of lean into adversity a little bit,” he explained.  “ We took a little more time to kind of figure things out. [But] he's a total musician... it took him a second to kind of find his way. But now he's killing it; he's really, really good.”

Listen to the interview below.

In other Slipknot news, it has been announced that original vocalist Anders Colsefni will be performing the band's 1996 self-released album  Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat .  in full on the Nu-Metal Mayhem tour.

Slipknot Announce First Dates for 2024 25th Anniversary Tour

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Slipknot 's self-titled debut album and, after having a trio of U.S. festivals on the books for next year, the band has just announced their first tour of 2024 with 11 performances in Europe and the U.K. in celebration of their first record.

Some fans will be eager to point out that Slipknot's self-released 1996 effort  Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. is their true first album, but that's all semantics — the band doesn't perform material off of that album and the true debut, which came out on Roadrunner Records in 1999, is the more official debut release.

Prior to making the announcement, which is comprised of late 2024 dates, Slipknot posted a video teaser  featuring footage from the late '90s, captioned, "Here Comes the Pain...," which can be seen directly below. The web address youcantkillme.com also flashes across the screen, which leads fans to a vintage Slipknot website from their 1999 era.

"It has been 25 years since we first played on the continent, and we've been back ever since," percussionist Clown says of the upcoming tour (via Metal Hammer ). "The memories I have from all those times are life changing, and we're ready to make more. I'm so excited to bring our 25 year Anniversary tour to Europe and the UK. Be prepared for an energy you've never experienced before. It's happening."

The memories I have from all those times are life changing, and we’re ready to make more. I’m so excited to bring our 25 year anniversary tour to Europe and the UK. SLIPKNOT released their debut self-titled studio album on June 29, 1999, and with it they heralded a seismic shift in music, attitude and energy, and have since defined a culture that has only grown around the world.  In the quarter century since, Slipknot’s unwavering dedication to their art, expression, and their fans remains at the core of their mission.   The band has remained as creative and unapologetic as ever, both in their music and their live shows.

As always, SLIPKNOT’s storied live show promises to be a spectacle of sound and sight without comparison. For tickets and more information on SLIPKNOT’s upcoming live dates, visit www.slipknot1.com .

Having recently wrapped a tour of some of the biggest festival stages in the world, SLIPKNOT are set to headline the highly-anticipated Sick New World festival at the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on April 27th. Furthermore, SLIPKNOT recently immortalized their legendary sold-out 2009 concert at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on vinyl for the first time ever with the double LP Live at MSG.

Continually and fearlessly evolving, SLIPKNOT’s latest full length album THE END, SO FAR  landed at #1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart and at #2 on the Billboard 200, marking their sixth top 10-charting album on the Billboard 200.  A new album from SLIPKNOT is a global event, and THE END, SO FAR continued the band’s global chart rise, with #1 debuts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Switzerland, and Mexico, as well as Top 3 debuts in Canada, New Zealand, Finland, Sweden, Japan, and Belgium.  SLIPKNOT’s previous album, 2019’s WE ARE NOT YOUR KIND, marked SLIPKNOT’s third consecutive #1 on the Billboard 200, along with #1 debuts in the Official Album Charts of twelve countries around the world, including the UK, Australia, Canada and Mexico, with Top 5 debuts in an additional twelve countries including Germany, France and Sweden.
