Federal Jack's - Kennebunkport Brewing Company
You could spend many an hour watching the boats arrive and depart at Federal Jack's prime Dock Square restaurant.
Written by CraftJack | Updated 07/08/20 | 1 min read
Federal Jack's is a veteran among the many Kennebunk restaurants and Kennebunkport bars. Bars in Kennebunkport, Maine are like all other port town bars, packed with people trying to grab a pint. And what better place to serve them than to start a craft beer brewpub.
KBC brewing was founded in the early 90s, with the restaurant being named after a locally built ship. Federal Jack's is a family friendly full-service brewpub that really nails the views. With outdoor deck-level seating, and an indoor brewpub-as-a-restaurant vibe, there is something for everyone.
Dock Square parking availability has declined over the years, so you will probably have to valet the Caddie with a young 20-something.

Seafood, obviously. Burgers and fries, typical American pub fare. And, a Sunday brunch. A decade and a half ago, they had a luxurious pineapple upside-down cake on the menu, if you will allow such a thing to be considered luxurious.

Vacationland Beer Tours: A Guide to Maine’s Best Breweries
Many pints are poured throughout the state of Maine, but which breweries are the best to stop and sip during a trip? While you’d be hard-pressed not to find an outstanding tour or tasting during your visit to Vacationland, these Maine breweries from York to Bar Harbor will inspire an addition of ale to your itinerary (or even spark a brew-focused getaway).
Vacationland Beer Tours: A Guide To Maine Breweries
Kittery-ogunquit area (south coast).
Maine’s Southern Coast is home to several breweries, the most popular being Tributary Brewing Company , known for its hand-crafted beers by New England brewing legend Tod Mott. While in the area, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of SoME Brewing Company ’s cozy tasting room in York, or tap your feet to jammin’ live music at Shipyard Brew & Pub during their Summer Breeze Concert Series.
Catch one of the Best Brew Tours (with locations in Ogunquit, Kittery, and York ) for a little ale-on-wheels action. Any given tour is likely to feature these southern Maine breweries, but you’ll also cross the border to try some brew from Portsmouth , N . H.
Kennebunkport
Kennebunkport won’t disappoint a New England beer lover — this marine city sees several spots with quality brews and quality views to match. Watch the ships roll by at Federal Jack’s , a picturesque pub and restaurant located right on the waterfront, or get a full-fledged taste of Maine at Sebago Brewing Company whose product is brewed with all-American malt, hops and crisp water from its namesake Sebago Lake.
Greater Portland Area
With 17 microbreweries in operation, Portland, Maine has the highest rate of breweries per capita out of any city in the country . Hop aboard The Maine Brew Bus to get a taste of The Forest City’s best brews, including (but certainly not limited to) the long-time fan favorites: Allagash Brewery , Rising Tide Brewing Company , and Bissell Brothers Brewing .
Midcoast Maine
Making your way to Midcoast Maine? Put Rock Harbor Brewing in downtown Rockland on your brew tour checklist — not only does this brewpub craft a wide range of beers and delectable pub fare, but it also hosts regular event nights from trivia to live music to Cribbage tournaments. Or, trade downtown views for waterfront vistas on West Penobscot Bay at Andy’s Brew Pub in Lincolnville , also known as The Lobster Pound. You can’t visit Vacationland without sinking your fork into some authentic Maine lobster, after all.
Don’t let your Down East vacation go without a visit to the Atlantic Brewing Company , the beer-pouring pride of Bar Harbor . With award-winning brews like the Thunder Hole Ale and Cadillac Mountain Stout, daily brewery tours, and a cozy tasting room just minutes from downtown, Atlantic Brewing alone will cap a beer-centric Maine getaway.
In Maine, brew is as bountiful as beaches and lobster rolls — try them all at a beer fest thrown by the Maine Brewers’ Guild . No matter which section of the Pine Tree State you choose to raise your glass in, be sure to make a reservation at one of our inns or resorts — we’ll be your resident guides to the best places to say “cheers” in Maine.

“Tour the brewery first before dinner” Review of Federal Jacks Restaurant and Brewpub
We were looking for something to do before dinner and hopped on the brewery tour (runs hourly until 5pm). Great way to learn the history behind the owners and the origins of the KBC ales served in the restaurant and made right there on the premises. Dinner was fair but the overall experience was worthwhile. Tip: Try the Sunfish Ale!

Good view from two story building. Can sit outside on the deck or inside. Drinks were good, food is fair, not fancy but nice. A lot of people eating in one place , gets loud at time with everyone talking. If you need quiet, this is not it.
a very large lively place with a great choice of food & drinks. I am a vegetarian & was spoiled for choice (which is rare). The only downside to this place is that you can't book in advance meaning there is often quite a lengthy wait for a table! Great views out over the harbor if you manage to bag a table on the balcony though!
We've met friends here for dinner twice now in the past six months and both times had good meals. It's a casual restaurant with a good variety of choices on the menu for appetizers, salads, meals and beer. Prices are what you'd expect in a tourist location, especially in the summer. Our wait for a table wasn't bad either ( about 20 minutes) on a busy summer Sunday night. Service is good and the staff was friendly and attentive. It's a loud, cavernous type of place but it's fun and is a nice place to meet friends for a casual meal.
We really enjoyed our lunch at this place. We had fried clams that were bellies and not strips - if you like fried clams, you will appreciate that fact 'cause it means quality! And do not hésitante for the fish and chips that is huge and delicious, or the reuben sandwich thats is what should always be. I had a nice cheeseburger with a choice of several cheese that was also perfect with good fries and coleslaw. Of course, the beer there is great and again, you have a choice of home-made quality brew.

The Birthplace of Shipyard
Kennebunkport Brewing Company is the birthplace of Shipyard Brewing Company’s award winning-line of handcrafted ales. In 1992, entrepreneur Fred Forsley and master buy soma brewer Alan Pugsley established the Kennebunkport Brewing Company (KBC) and Federal Jack’s. Word of our fine ales spread quickly throughout Maine. Demand quickly outpaced our size, and, in 1994, Shipyard Brewing Company Shipyard Brewing Company was built in Portland, Maine.

Maine Breweries, Brew Pubs, Beer Tours, and Festivals
Maine is known first and foremost for its lobster , that delicious crustacean from the coast. The Pine Tree State is also a major producer of potatoes, blueberries, maple syrup, even broccoli.
But beer? Who knew? Well, an ice cold IPA sure goes well with fresh lobster dipped in butter, or Maine fried clams and French fries made from hand-cut Maine potatoes, right?! Beer making is big in Maine. Perhaps the state mantra could be “Maine, the way beer should be” or Maine – Beer Vacation Land.
Maine has became a micro brew state in the past few decades, with new breweries and beer labels popping up like lobster pots in Cape Porpoise harbor. Lots of beer lovers in Maine simply craft their own small batch beer in their basement, but the Maine beer scene is far more sophisticated than home brews in houses.
You can actually visit Maine and make your time in Vacationland into a Maine beer tasting tour, visiting as many breweries as lighthouses and lobster shacks. These top Maine attractions go nicely together, lighthouses, boat tours , lobster bakes and beer.
Sounds good, doesn’t it?!
Maine Brew Pubs and Breweries
In recent years, Maine has become a beer-crafting leader, the low density state now hosts over 50 independent breweries, drafting 200 plus unique pours from porters and pilsners to IPAs and ales. The labels on Maine beers are as tempting and entertaining as the libation contained within each bottle. Baxter Brewing for example offers a Stowe Away IPA with a pirate-like skull and cross bones on the beer can.
Maine’s ski resorts have special small batch beers like Sugarloaf’s Bag and Kettle Brewing Company’s Winter Ale or Joe Stout made with Carrabassett coffee beans, delicious served après ski slopeside with a Bag Burger at Maine’s biggest ski mountain.
Portland has numerous breweries and brewpubs, including the original Gritty McDuff’s in the Old Port. Bissell Brothers Brewery at Thompson Point is popular. Even Tide is a small start up brewery gone big. Maine beer Company makes delicious craft beers. But there are so many good pours – Allagash, Bunker, FoulMouthed, Foundation, Lone Pine, Rising Tide, Oxbow Sebago Brewing, named for Sebago Lake, has its own brew family, with several brew pub restaurants and clever varietals with a vacationland theme like Frye’s Leap, Lake Trout Stout, Simmer Down Summer Session and Saddleback Ale. Full Throttle and Long Winter Ale are Sebago single batch brews, seasonal with a super beefy beer buzz content.
Beer Pairing Restaurants
At Maine’s best restaurants , the beer list is often as lengthy and fermented as the fancy wine list, with local offerings from light ales to blonde beers to porters, stouts and super hoppy beers loaded with barley that resemble bourbon more than beer. Maine’s top chefs now cater to beer drinkers with beer dinners to heighten the palate and pair with their host of culinary treats. Far beyond the beer battered shrimp, restaurants like York Harbor Inn host beer pairing dinners with flights of beer and several courses of seafood and beer braised beef, even a stout inspired dessert to finish off your feast.
Beer Festivals in Maine are huge in summer and fall harvest season. The Portland Brewfest is held Labor Day weekend with over 40 breweries and 70 beers for tasting. In November, the Maine Brewers Festival takes place in Portland with music and Maine brewer samplings. Bangor’s Beer Festival is in June each year with live music, a beer tent and craft fair of local Maine products. The Maine Lakes Brew Fest takes place at Point Sebago Resort in Casco end of September, with a lakeside setting, beer sampling, craft fairs and live music on the shores of Sebago Lake .
Brew Touring
There are so many Maine breweries and beer making factories that in 2009, Maine Brewers Guild created the Maine Beer Trail Passport, a clever map and plan of the many brew pubs and distilleries to visit in Vacationland. You can follow along a proposed beer route through Maine, tasting and touring Maine’s beer plants from small scale to full beer brewing factories, or just visit a few breweries between lighthouses and beaches if you don’t like your pilsner so planned.
The Maine Beer Bus is a fun way to have your froth with frequent stops and narration along with way, and a DD. The Maine Brew Bus is a Beer Bus Tour you can charter for a private event, say a bachelor party, or take part in their party on wheels – The Progressive Beer Dinner or the standard Beer Bus Tour of several breweries on the Southern Maine Coast , Portland to Freeport , and Bangor .
Who is to blame for this brimming Maine beer scene? David Geary, yes of Geary’s Beer, he made Maine’s first official craft beer since Prohibition in 1986. By 1988, his fellow brewers Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer opened Maine’s first true brewpub, Gritty McDuff’s on Fore Street in Portland with partners, and the rest is hops history.
While visiting Maine, be sure to frequent a few of these fantastic brew pubs and beer crafting companies along the way, and check out Maine’s wine scene and local vineyards . Drink and drive responsibly or hop on a beer bus tour or a brews cruise ferry to have fun safely.
