Choosing a cruise for a family vacation, isn’t one size fits all. Carnival is known for having some of the best cruise lines for families and kids. However, you’ll want to find the best Carnival cruise ship to fit your needs, budget and vacation preferences.

With that being said, here are the 7 best cruises for families.

1. Carnival Vista

The Carnival Vista is a fun ship for every member of the family. This cruise first set sail back in 2016, and has been a popular favorite ever since!

Since the Carnival Vista isn’t super new anymore, it’s going to be more affordable than newer ships. This is great is you’re cruising on a budget or just trying to save some money on your family vacation .

The Carnival Vista has some great restaurants onboard including: Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguanna Cantina, and you can’t forget the main dining room!

Some unique attractions on the Carnival Vista are the IMAX theatre, the SkyRide, the ropes course and water play areas. Kids and young adults who enjoy fun thrills will absolutely love these cruise ship attractions!

Carnival Kid’s and Teen Club Information:

The great thing about all Carnival Ships is that they have kids clubs which are separated by age group.

• Camp Ocean is for younger kids ages 2-11
• Circle C is for young teens ages 12-14
• Club O2 is for teenagers ages 14-17

When I was a younger kid, I would spend my days hanging out at the kid’s club, making new friends and having a good time. There are activities for kids 17 years and under, going on throughout the day and in the evening.

Activities like scavenger hunts, sports games, movie nights and dance parties are always fun. There’s also an area to hang out, a dance floor and an area to play video games, which every kid likes!

2. Carnival Mardi Gras

The Carnival Mardi Gras is a fan favorite, which gets a lot of repeat cruisers. The Mardi Gras is one of the largest ships and newest ships in Carnivals fleet, with over 5,200 passengers onboard!

The Carnival Mardi Gras cruise ship has 26 total dining options. You can bet that there is something for everyone to eat on this cruise ship!

Whether you’re cruising with young children, teens or young adults , this cruise is fun for the whole family.

The Mardi Gras is one of the best cruise ships at sea for families , as there is so much to do for every member of the family. Whether it’s hanging out by the pool, playing in the waterparks or relaxing in the hot tubs, the Carnival Mardi Gras makes for an awesome family vacation.

The main attraction on the Carnival Mardi Gras is the Bolt Roller Coaster, which is the first roller coaster at sea. This does have an additional cost, however going on a roller coaster at sea is not something you do everyday!

3. Carnival Panorama

The Carnival Panorama is the sister ship to the Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon. This cruise ship first set sail back in late 2019, and is known for having plenty of cruise ship activities and attractions.

Some of the attractions on the Carnival Panorama include the SkyRide, Sky Zone (trampoline park), a ropes course, an enclosed basketball court, mini golf and an outdoor exercise area. This cruise ship is amazing for teenagers !

There are also two water slides called Red Fun (raft slide) and Blue Fun, which is a standard water slide. If you’re cruising with older children who are afraid of water slides, there is a splash park which is also really fun.

Onboard the Carnival Panorama there are also plenty of bars, places to eat at and a Casino. In the evening time, there are parties going on around the ship.

There is a great kid’s club on Carnival, so you leave your children in the kids club (there is a fee after 10 pm) and let loose for the evening!

There is so much included on a Carnival cruise , which makes it a good time and great value for everyone.

4. Carnival Sunrise (Refurbished)

The Carnival Sunrise is a mid-size ship that is known for it’s shorter sailings (2-5 days). If you’re looking for a short family getaway, the Carnival Sunrise is perfect.

This cruise ship holds over 2,700 passengers and was originally built in 1999. The Carnival Sunrise was recently refurbished in 2019, so the look of this cruise ship is pretty modern and new looking.

The Carnival Sunrise has two waters slides, a splash park and a ropes course. There is also a nice pool area, which has fun activities and games going on throughout the day.

By the pool, you’ll find is a giant screen that will play movies and shows throughout your cruise. This is a great place to take it easy with the family and spend some quality time together.

Since this cruise was recently refurbished, the kids clubs and teens club looks super modern. If you’re cruising with kids , good luck getting them out of the teens club or kids club!

5. Carnival Horizon

The Carnival Horizon is the sister ship to the Carnival Vista and the Carnival Panorama. Unlike the Carnival Panorama, this ship does not have a SkyZone, however it does have an IMAX theatre.

Like its sister ships, the Carnival Horizon has a ropes course, SkyRide and water slides.

If you like fine dining, then you will love the wide variety of specialty restaurants onboard the Carnival Horizon. Please note that specialty restaurants do have an extra charge.

6. Carnival Dream

The Carnival Dream launched back in 2009. However it was refurbished a few years ago in 2017. The ship received the Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades, which includes new restaurants like Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguanna Cantina, the Alchemy Bar and Bonsai Sushi.

This Carnival cruise ship has multiple pool areas, water slides and serenity, which is the adult only area. Serenity is a great place to relax while your kids are on the water slides or at the kids club.

In the evening time, there are family friendly shows, as well as adult only shows. The Punchliner Comedy Club is a great spot to go see some hilarious comedians onboard the Carnival Dream.

The Carnival Dream has something for everyone, so expect the whole family to love this cruise.

7. Carnival Celebration (coming soon!)

The Carnival Celebration looks like it might be the best Carnival cruise ship yet! The Carnival Celebration is a new cruise ship that will set sail in November 2022, in celebration of Carnival Cruise Line’s 50th anniversary.

Some of the highlights on the Carnival Celebration include it’s 6 zones to explore: Celbration Central, The Gateway, Summer Landing, 820 Biscayne, Lido and The Ultimate Playground.

You’ll have The Bolt, the world’s fastest, and first (along with Mardi Gras) roller coaster at sea. The kids and all family members will love Waterworks, an incredible water slide and water park area onboard the ship.

You’ll also experience some of the best entertainment onboard Carnival cruise ships, including the popular Family Feud Live game show.

This Carnival Celebration is a sister ship to the Carnival Mardi Gras, so it has similar restaurants and onboard activities. Although the Carnival Celebration is similar to the Mardi Gras, they did add three new restaurants.

Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.

Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.

When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:

The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?

The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?

The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?

The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?  

Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.

Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.

Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.

Disney Cruise Line

When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.

There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.

Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.

Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.

The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship. 

Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities. 

Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke. 

The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited. 

In-room babysitting isn't available.

Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.

The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.

All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.

The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.

For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.

As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.

Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.

Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.

Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.

For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.

On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.

Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.

Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary. 

Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together. 

Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke. 

For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.

MSC Cruises

The Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.

The fleet has 19 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.

Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.

The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.

Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.

For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.

MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.

Celebrity, Holland America and Princess

Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises , Holland America Line and Princess offer kids programs, but they’re not as well known for amenities on the ships like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters. The ships often aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships.

These lines can be great for multigenerational cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And they also have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.

The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.

Things for Babies and Toddlers to Do

Night owls .

At an additional fee, you can leave your kid to a slumber party (6 months to 11 years) under the supervision of a counselor (at Camp Ocean) while you make the most of the night elsewhere on the cruise ship. The service is available each night from 10:00pm to 1:00am.

Things for 2 to 5 Year Olds to Do

Space cruisers .

Space Cruises offers a variety of hands-on astronomy-themed activities for budding astronauts (2 to 11 years) and physicists! Kids can enjoy building and racing Mars Rovers, designing and testing bridge physics and more. Additionally, children will earn an exclusive mission patch as a precious memento for completing missions. Houston, we don't have a problem!

Camp Ocean 

A creative-infused, ocean-themed camp for kids! Kids are supervised by trained counselors in age-based groups aptly named: Penguins (2 to 5 years), Stingrays (6 to 8 years) and Sharks (9 to 11 years). Activities include singing, dancing, crafting and video games!

Things for 6 to 11 Year Olds to Do

Sportsquare .

A staple in any Carnival ship featuring activities such as mini-golf, rope course, ping-pong, basketball, volleyball, etc. It's for all ages, really!

According to Carnival, Skyride is just "like riding a bike" except you're high above the deck and even higher above the seas. The biking part must be referring to the pedal-powered go-mobile mechanics that let you zip around the ship's two-lane suspended course. The catch? You, I mean your kids, will need to work on that lower-body strength a little bit.

Ropes Course 

Your thrill-seeking kiddos will either love the rope course or hate you for it. Jokes aside, they'll be safely strapped in as they traverse a course unlike any other. Here's a tip, the difficulty can be adjusted.

Things for 12 to 14 Years Old to Do

Circle “c” .

We don't know what the "C" stands for and at this point we're too afraid to ask. What we know is that Circle “C” is a dedicated hangout spot for teens (12 to 14 years) where they can meet new friends and enjoy awesome activities such as outdoor movies, games and dance parties!

What is the Newest Carnival Cruise Ship?

The newest entry in the Carnival fleet (as of this writing) is the Carnival Celebration, the second Excel-class vessel in the fleet, joining Mardi Gras which was introduced in 2021. The third ship in the same class, will arrive in December 2023: Carnival Jubilee.

Only certain Carnival cruise lines offer Family Harbor staterooms, where kids and parents can have fun being together. The best carnival cruise ships aren't necessarily the latest entries in the fleet since all active ships have their own unique identity that makes them fun ships in their own right. However, when it comes to "family fun" we're quite confident that the ships we've listed above carry a slight advantage by virtue of having more family-friendly accommodation and activities.

A Guide to All 27 Carnival Cruise Ships

With 27 ships and hundreds of itineraries, there’s a Carnival cruise for everyone.

Carnival Cruise Line offers numerous cruise options worldwide with a fleet of 27 ships. Their cruises include all the hits: celebrity chef-driven restaurants, onboard rollercoasters, dedicated kids venues, serene spa moments, adults-exclusive pool decks, and exciting destinations. Carnival has it all — and can be relatively affordable. But which ship is right for you?

After sailing on eight Carnival cruises, including voyages on its oldest ship, Carnival Elation , and the newer Carnival Celebration, I’ve learned that sailing on newer ships is generally more expensive, and older vessels are more budget-friendly. However, I often consider more than the total cost before booking a cruise. I look at the ports of call, the space-to-guest ratio, the amenities and onboard activities, and the launch point.

When I select a sailing, I book through Carnival Cruise Line’s reservation number to see if I can snag an exclusive deal not listed online. Carnival's free-to-join loyalty program, the Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) Club, offers deals like reduced deposits, onboard credit, and room upgrades. The more you book with the cruise line, the better your deals will be. 

Before committing to a cruise, I break down the price per person per night, particularly if I need multiple cabins because I'm traveling with a group. I recommend you take advantage of Carnival's convenient 24-hour reservation hold, which displays the total cost, itinerary, and a countdown timer so you know when to purchase to secure the locked-in price.

Carnival Firenze

Inaugural Year: 2024

Ship Class: Venice Class

Ship Capacity: 4,126 double occupancy; 5,245 total guests

Originally debuted in 2021 as part of the Costa Cruises fleet (an Italy-based subsidiary of Carnival), the Firenze will set sail as a Carnival ship — with an Italian twist — in Spring 2024. Across Firenze , you’ll see touches of Italy; think cute cafe set-ups that look like they were picked up from a Florence sidewalk. Terrazza staterooms access a private sun deck with whirlpools and a bar. Carnival’s fan-favorite dining options and amenities, like Guy’s Burger Joint and WaterWorks, will be on board.

Carnival Jubilee

Carnival Jubilee is the newest Excel-class ship in the fleet, sailing from Galveston, Texas. The massive ship offers Camp Ocean, the onboard kids club. Adults also have their own space at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat with swaying hammocks and a bar.

Carnival Venezia

Ship Capacity: 3,934 double occupancy; 4,977 total guests

Initially built in 2019 for Costa Cruises, this ship joined the Carnival fleet in 2023. Carnival Venezia is ideal if you’re looking for a ship that celebrates one of Italy’s most iconic cities. Venice is the inspiration behind the indoor and outdoor areas, including the atrium, modeled after Piazza San Marco, and the Carnevale Lounge, inspired by Venetian masquerades. Don't miss the Venetian Toast, where the ship’s captain greets guests and crew don Venetian masks.

Carnival Celebration

Carnival Celebration is all about never-ending good times. During my recent sailing, I found all the Carnival classics, like the Alchemy Bar and Guy’s Burger Joint, a thrilling ropes course, dive-in movies, and plenty of themed deck parties. If you’re looking to relax, it has that, too. Rent cabanas or lounge in the ocean-view whirlpools at Loft 19, where attentive staff take care of everything, like delivering you fruit and chilled towels. My favorite spot to hang out was the aft Patio Pool because it wasn't ever super crowded, and the view of the ocean was unmatched. 

Carnival Luminosa

Ship Class: Spirit Class

Ship Capacity: 2,260 double occupancy; 2,826 total guests 

Standout Amenities: Carnival fan-favorite Alchemy Bar; Circle “C” tween club; Cloud 9 Spa hydrotherapy pool for rejuvenating soaks

Carnival Luminosa (formerly the Costa Luminosa ) is for you if you want to sail to destinations like Alaska and Australia. It also offers occasional itineraries through scenic transpacific spots like Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, and Japan. The ship has all of the brand’s classic amenities, like the RedFrog Rum Bar and Punchliner Comedy Club, plus an array of dining options, including sushi, pizza, ice cream, and an over-the-top brunch.

Carnival Mardi Gras

Inaugural Year: 2021

Ship Capacity: 5,282 double occupancy; 6,456 total guests

Standout Amenities: BOLT: Ultimate Sea Coaster for adrenaline junkies; Havana Bar for Cuban drinks and live music; Guy’s Pig & Anchor Smokehouse and Brewhouse

Carnival Mardi Gras is a nod to Carnival’s first ship, also named Mardi Gras, which was launched in 1972. The vessel has six onboard zones where families can have fun together, including the Ultimate Playground, where BOLT and the SportsSquare are located. Of course, there’s no Mardi Gras without New Orleans, so the French Quarter zone is where you’ll find Big Easy-inspired amenities like an Emeril Lagasse restaurant.

Carnival Radiance

Inaugural Year: 2021 (formerly Carnival Victory , which set sail in 2000)

Ship Class: Sunshine Class

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,873 total guests 

Standout Amenities: BlueIguana Tequila Bar for great margaritas; ZSPA for teens who want a spa day; an outdoor gym on the ship's top deck

Carnival Radiance has culinary delights and family fun in spades. If you're a foodie, try Guy’s Burger Joint for loaded burgers straight from Flavortown or Shaq’s Big Chicken for the basketball star's incredible fried chicken sandwiches. Kids will love seeing The Cat in the Hat characters during activities like character parades, story time, and character breakfasts.

Carnival Panorama

Inaugural Year: 2019

Ship Class: Vista Class

Ship Capacity: 4,008 double occupancy; 5,146 total guests

Carnival Panorama is smaller than today's mega-ships, but it packs a ton of fun into its 15 decks. Rooms are spacious; some come with exclusive perks like access to the Havana Pool area or unlimited use of the spa’s thermal suites. Kids will also love that there’s an onboard waterpark, kids club, and a Build-a-Bear Workshop at Sea.

Carnival Sunrise

Ship Capacity: 2,984 double occupancy; 3,973 total guests

Standout Amenities: Cloud 9 Spa cabins with access to the thermal suites; Lucky Bowl restaurant, which is only on Carnival Sunrise and only open for lunch

Carnival Sunrise  (formerly Carnival Triumph ) features an exciting splash zone for kids and a piano bar where adults can sing along to their favorite songs all night. The ship sails on two to five-night and six to nine-night cruises from Miami, Florida, to the Bahamas.

Carnival Horizon

Inaugural Year: 2018

Ship Capacity: 3,960 double occupancy; 4,977 total guests

Standout Amenities: IMAX movie theater for a family night out; Dr. Suess Bookville for family story time and character appearances; volleyball court where adults can test their skills or just hit the ball around

Carnival Horizon has all the makings of a fun family vacation. The kids clubs have dedicated counselors who ensure children are always having fun, and parents can slip away to an adults-only bar for a cocktail or the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat to catch some sun. Then, as night falls, you can come back together for a special meal in the main dining room or JiJi Asian Kitchen, which specializes in regional Asian cuisine.

Carnival Vista

Inaugural Year: 2016

Standout Amenities: The thrilling SkyRide suspended bike for great ship and sea views; Thrill Theater for a 3-D show with water, lighting, wind, and chair movement effects; RedFrog Pub & Brewery, the first brewery at sea in North America

Carnival Vista is perfect for new cruisers. Sailings range from two to nine days out of Port Canaveral, so you can get a taste of what a cruise is like without committing to a more traditional weeklong sailing. Expect an onboard brewery, incredible restaurants, and family-friendly fun.

Carnival Sunshine

Inaugural Year: 2013

Ship Capacity: 3,002 double occupancy; 3,758 total guests

Carnival Sunshine (formerly Carnival Destiny ) is 10 years old and a fan favorite. The lower guest capacity, at just over 3,000 for double occupancy, means you won’t have to fight hoards of people to get to and from activities. Families who want even more cabin space should book one of the aft-view extended balcony rooms with great wake views and ample private outdoor space.

Carnival Breeze

Inaugural Year: 2012

Ship Class: Dream Class

Carnival Breeze is ideal for a short cruise out of Galveston, Texas. The ship has plenty of activities throughout the day, including bingo, trivia, and live performances in the comedy club.

Carnival Magic

Carnival Magic sails for a week or more from Miami, Florida. The ship debuted the restaurant Cucina del Capitano, which is now onboard multiple ships in the fleet. It’s also home to the original Guy’s Pig & Anchor. I sailed the Carnival Magic years ago, but I vividly remember spending an entire day enjoying the amenities at the Cloud 9 Spa and eating at the Mongolian Wok quick-service restaurant almost every afternoon for lunch.

Carnival Dream

Inaugural Year: 2009

Ship Capacity: 3,646 double occupancy; 4,631 total guests

Standout Amenities: Ocean Plaza, a multi-use entertainment venue that’s family-friendly during the day and a nightclub after dark; Guy’s Burger Joint for standout smash burgers; Cloud 9 Spa for adults to relax

Carnival Dream is known for exciting entertainment and food and beverage offerings, including Alchemy Bar, a vintage-themed cocktail "pharmacy." The ship sails from Galveston, Texas, on six to nine-day cruises. I loved playing the onboard mini-golf course.

Carnival Splendor

Inaugural Year: 2008

Ship Class: Splendor Class

Standout Amenities: Masala Tiger Indian restaurant, which is only open for lunch and only on this ship; a mini-golf course; a pool with a retractable cover

Carnival Splendor sails the Southern Hemisphere around Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific on cruises that range from two to 10 days. The ship has Carnival’s only quick-service Indian restaurant and boasts a pool with a retractable roof, so you can swim without worrying about the weather.

Carnival Freedom

Inaugural Year: 2007

Ship Class: Conquest Class

Ship Capacity: 2,980 double occupancy; 3,754 total guests

Carnival Valor is almost 20 years old and still showing cruisers a good time. The ship's home ports are New Orleans, Louisiana, and Barcelona, Spain, and it offers two to over 10-night sailings. Don’t miss the epic Seaday Brunch, where you'll find all kinds of treats like huevos rancheros, french toast, loaded burgers, and chicken and waffles.

Carnival Miracle

Ship Capacity: 2,124 double occupancy; 2,680 total guests

Standout Amenities: Serenity Adult-Only Retreat where the 21-plus crowd can enjoy a kid-free space; pickleball courts that have great views of the ocean and ports of call

Carnival Glory

Carnival Elation is currently the fleet's oldest ship, debuting in March 1998, and the only cruise ship from any cruise line that sails from Jacksonville, Florida. Even though the ship is small, with a total guest capacity of 2,606, it’s ideal for a quick weekend away if you want a mix of relaxation and high-energy activities. I've sailed the most on Carnival Elation since the ship sails from my hometown of Jacksonville. Even though it's the oldest in the fleet, I love that the sailings are short weekend trips where I can sit outside in the sun enjoying a Guy's Burger Joint smash burger before heading inside to see a show or play bingo. And because the ship is so small, it's easy to navigate, and I always end up making friends with the delightful crew onboard.

The best cruise lines for families allow parents and kids to have fun together and apart while taking the stress out of group travel.

Disney Cruise Line

No one will be surprised that entertainment juggernaut Disney offers an amazing family cruise experience.

Disney Cruise Line ships are known for meet-and-greets with Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, interactive movie-themed dining experiences and enormous kids clubs and play areas.

What might surprise the uninitiated is how good the line is at taking care of the whole family, not just the Mouse-obsessed little ones.

Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow. From split bathrooms (allowing one family member to take a bath while another uses the toilet) to waiters who will cut up your child's food, Disney Cruise Line takes the pressure off parents.

While other cruise lines limit water play to kids who are toilet trained and drop-off child care to ages 3 and up, Disney caters to all kids with onboard splash areas and nurseries.

It also offers adults-only pool decks and restaurants, a nightlife scene and couples spa treatments to revive exhausted parents who haven't had a date in months.

Teens might roll their eyes at the ever-present Mickeys, but Disney Cruise Line does not ignore its older kid guests. Tweens and teens get their own cool hangouts, Edge and Vibe, with video games, foosball and hip seating areas.

Additionally, first-run movies and Broadway-caliber musicals, waterslides, teen spa treatments and grab-and-go food options (and free room service) keep older kids busy and happy.

Disney Wish and soon-to-debut Disney Treasure feature sports areas for free play and competitions attractive to this age group.

Royal Caribbean

With some of the biggest ships at sea and an amusement park-like private island in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for active families.

Carnival Cruise Line

Practicalities first: Carnival Cruise Line is an affordable and convenient cruise line for families who don't live the jet-set lifestyle. With home ports all around the U.S., Carnival puts its ships within driving distance of many Americans.

A variety of short-cruise destinations, affordable-yet-spacious inside cabins (they can sleep four) and lots of onboard attractions and restaurants included in the fares combine to make it one of the best-value cruise lines afloat.

Carnival doesn't dub its fleet the Fun Ships for nothing. The whole family will have a blast on board, whether you like getting down to live music, busting a gut at family-friendly comedy shows, getting soaked at an onboard water park or eating green eggs and ham with Dr. Seuss characters.

The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool.

Families don't need to pull out their wallets to feed ravenous teens or sugar-fueled children. Guy Fieri burgers and barbecue, burritos for breakfast and lunch and Shaquille O'Neal's fried chicken are all included in your cruise fares. No one's going to make you dress up for dinner, either.

Carnival ships have plenty of cabins that can sleep four or five passengers, but its newest ships truly treat families right. Book a Family Harbor cabin or suite and get access to a family lounge stocked with all the essentials — snacks and coffee, games, Wi-Fi, movies and a concierge to make bookings so mom and dad can spend more time playing with the kids.

MSC Cruises

The underdog on our list, MSC Cruises might not be a household name yet, but any cruise line that has a partnership with Lego should be on every family's radar.

As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families.

Case in point: Larger family groups don't have to cram into one cabin or be scattered across the ship. Instead, they can select from a variety of connecting cabins that can accommodate up to 10 people.

Families keen on rooming together can take advantage of frequent "kids sail free" fares and pay only the taxes and fees for children under 18 who are the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.

Speaking of kids clubs, MSC's ships offer play spaces for babies, kids, tweens and teens. Its ships not only offer a drop-off Baby Club with educational toys by Chicco but also a special baby laundry service to take care of that pile of dirty onesies.

Kids club activities go beyond arts and crafts and video games to include cooking events, sports competitions and hi-tech interactive games. Teens can sing karaoke, dance at the onboard disco and attend themed parties with their new friends.

Outside of the kids club, families can race in a Formula One simulator, experience virtual reality, get soaked in a water park or brave their fear of heights on a suspension bridge.

One of the line's newest ships, MSC Seascape, features Robotron, a three-seat robotic amusement ride that's a hit with thrill-seeking families.

Norwegian Cruise Line

The cruise line also gets a shoutout for its family-friendly Hawaii itineraries. The only big-ship cruise line that sails weeklong itineraries round trip from Honolulu, Norwegian provides an easy way for families to visit multiple islands.

Cruises make the perfect family vacation, especially when traveling with teens. Teens can mix and mingle with others their age in teens-only clubs, play games, listen to music, or grab a pizza and watch a movie under the stars. If your tweens and teens need more action-packed fun to keep them entertained, some cruise ships act like floating amusement parks with zip lines, racetracks, roller coasters, ice skating rinks, laser tag, waterslides and more.

The following lines offer the best cruises for teens and tweens, along with their parents.

MSC Cruises offers plenty of family fun and activities for teens on its ships, including sports tournaments, waterslides and a family disco. On select ships, you'll also find the full-size MSC Formula Racer simulator, an interactive XD cinema, a virtual reality experience, zip lines and an arcade room. The Young Club programming by MSC Cruises offers daily activities for 12- to 14-year-old tweens, while teens 15 to 17 can participate in sports and dance competitions as well as video game tournaments at the Teen Club. Older kids can also participate in fun themed events, karaoke, piloting practice at the Drone Academy and flash mobs – and there's a teens-only disco.

On MSC Seascape , teens can stay busy in three new concept spaces. "Future" features a state-of-the-art technology area with the latest-generation consoles, VR and video screens for hours of entertainment. "Chill Out" is just as it sounds – a place to hang out, chat, and play foosball and pingpong. Meanwhile, "Music" is a dance club where kids can choose their own tunes and dance the night away with cool lighting and sound effects. If all that isn't enough, Robotron, the first of its kind at sea, is an amusement park-like ride that combines the thrill of a roller coaster with personalized music and lighting.

MSC World Europa boasts the largest and most engaging kids area in the fleet with an impressive 8,245 square feet of action-packed space. The new Teens Lab features an immersive area for teenagers with more than 20 of the latest consoles, seven VR stations and dozens of video games. Drone Academy 2.0 is a high-energy relay race for drones. There's even more onboard fun at Z Active, a sports program that offers basketball, football and zorb ball alongside two firsts for the line – pickleball and hoverboards. Teens can also take a spin on the bumper cars at the MSC Sportplex.

MSC Euribia – the line's newest ship, which set sail on its inaugural cruise in June 2023 – has a total of 7,500-plus square feet of space dedicated to kids ages 0 to 17. The new Teens Club Extra Space offers three different areas: the Young Club (ages 12 to 14), the Teens Club (15 to 17) and the Teens Lab (12 to 17). Some of the activities include those found on other MSC ships, such as Z Active, Drone Academy 2.0 and the MSC Dance Crew competition. Teens will also have access to new video games; pingpong; World Quest, an interactive game show based on trivia and geography; and Caravaggio, an immersive spy game show about an art heist.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line boasts a teens-only venue, Entourage, which caters to young adults 13 to 17 years old. This supervised space – available on 16 of the line's 19 ships – keeps teens busy in an adults-free lounge that's filled with video games, movies, music, arts and sports. Teen counselors on Norwegian Cruise Line plan activities and challenges to keep kids entertained throughout the cruise. A list of detailed activities is available on embarkation day so teens can plan out their schedule for the cruise.

Norwegian Prima , the first vessel in the Prima class, features many first-at-sea innovations perfect for entertaining families and energetic teens, including the three-level Prima Speedway. With cars reaching up to 30 miles per hour, this quarter-mile-long racetrack is one of the highest-rated attractions on Prima. Adventurous teens will also want to check out The Drop and The Rush. Billed as the fastest slides at sea, these chutes offer thrill-seekers a heart-pumping 10-story freefall plunge.

If that's not enough action, teens can also play The Bull's Eye, a classic game of darts that uses a video tracking system, or check out Tee Time for a pumped-up version of mini-golf set against a Las Vegas backdrop. In the Galaxy Pavilion, an indoor gaming complex, you'll find more than a dozen attractions, including immersive simulator experiences, escape rooms and the Topgolf Swing Suite – all of which are unique to Norwegian Prima. When it's time to cool off, the Tidal Wave waterslide is another first for the brand, letting guests ride inner tubes to catch the surf.

Norwegian Viva, the second vessel in the Prima class, is set to launch in August 2023. As the newest ship in NCL's fleet, Viva will also feature these exciting high-tech attractions, including Viva Speedway. If you and your teens are fans of the movie "Beetlejuice," you're in for a treat: The Broadway musical adaptation will debut on the new ship.

The line's Breakaway Plus class – Norwegian Escape , Joy , Bliss and Encore – is also popular with families as these ships offer plenty of activities and attractions suited for active teens, such as go-kart tracks, outdoor laser tag and VR games in the Galaxy Pavilion.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line features two cool spaces dedicated to teens and tweens, who can hang out on comfy couches, watch shows or movies, and play video games. These hangouts, called Edge (for ages 11 to 14) and Vibe (ages 14 to 17), are available on all Disney Cruise Line ships.

On Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream , the space at Vibe also features a private outdoor deck with chaise lounges, wading pools, foosball and more. While indoors, teenagers can mingle with others their age, or just kick back and relax in individual nooks. There's a dance club area for karaoke contests, talent shows and dance competitions. The trendy indoor-outdoor space – at almost 9,000 square feet – is accessible with a teens-only card or DisneyBand+. On the new Disney Wish ship, Vibe has a French twist inspired by a Paris artist's loft with neon signs and funk pop art.

For tweens sailing on Disney Fantasy or Dream, Edge is a bright, loft-style gathering spot – located in the funnel – that has individual computer stations for gaming and a massive video wall for screening television, movies and games. There's also a lit-up dance floor for dance parties. Two nifty features of the space – and its location – are views of the pool decks below as well as three portholes that allow for glimpses of the riders on the water coaster, AquaDuck, as they zoom by.

On the first night of the cruise, kids receive information on what activities and events will be available during their vacation so they can curate a personalized entertainment itinerary. Some fun options throughout the week may include "Gotcha," a game of elimination where one teen will become the ultimate victor. For a special treat – and a bit of pampering – guests ages 13 to 17 won't want to miss an afternoon at Chill Spa, located inside Senses Spa & Salon.

The newly updated space for teens 13 to 17 years old on Royal Caribbean International vessels is hidden behind a secret speakeasy entrance. The dedicated venue, which has a gaming lounge and music, is a cozy place to hang out to meet other teens on the ship. There's also an outdoor patio where you can relax in the sun or chill out under the stars. Teens will find planned activities throughout the day at the lounge, including sports tournaments, a nightly teen disco and themed parties.

Social 100 is an exclusive new space for ages 13 to 17 on Wonder of the Seas . The outdoor space sits next to the waterslides and boasts a hot tub, lawn games, cozy seating, a selfie area, and a bar serving zero-proof cocktails and shakes. The indoor part of Social 100 features a gaming area, foosball tables, a vending machine and more comfortable spaces for teens to mingle.

Teens have plenty of activities they can do with their families on Royal Caribbean's ships, especially on the new Icon of the Seas, the first vessel in the Icon class. Slated for its inaugural sailing in January 2024, Wonder of the Seas will be the  world's largest cruise ship .  Cruisers of all ages will have endless opportunities for fun with more venues, activities and attractions than you've ever seen on a cruise ship.

Teens and their parents will appreciate Chill Island, a three-level pool deck with the first swim-up bar at sea. The new water park, Thrill Island, boasts six waterslides, including exciting firsts at sea, such as Pressure Drop, the first open freefall slide. If that's not enough to get the adrenaline pumping, teens can check out Crown's Edge – a combination thrill ride, skywalk and ropes course – or other Royal Caribbean favorites like Adrenaline Peak, Sports Court, the FlowRider surf simulator or the reimagined mini-golf course.

If you're hanging out in the new Surfside neighborhood on Icon, a dedicated space for young families, teens will have easy access to the supervised teens-only club, Social 020, from this open-air space.

When you head ashore to Perfect Day in CocoCay, one of the best  cruise line private islands , teen cruisers will find plenty of fun land-based activities like Thrill Waterpark and 1,600-foot-long zip lines. Be sure not to miss another thrilling experience: Up, Up and Away. The helium balloon ride soars 450 feet above the ground to the highest vantage point in the Bahamas , offering incredible panoramic views of the island and surrounding turquoise waters.

The Kids Club on Holland America Line offers a fun supervised program for 13- to 17-year-old guests in an adult-free zone known as The Loft. The name is in the process of changing to High Score!, and you'll already find the updated concept on Oosterdam and Eurodam . The line's other ships will change over to the new venue throughout 2024. High Score! is a family game room that serves as a secret getaway for teens by day. In the evenings, entire families can come to play skeeball, board games and join in other activities.

The teens-only space (during the day) on Holland America Line resembles a New York artists loft where kids can listen to music, watch movies, play games and meet and hang out with same-age cruisers. Programs and activities at the current space, The Loft, include themed events, karaoke, a teen disco and nighttime activities such as Poker Night and video game tournaments. Youths can also participate in pingpong, basketball and other teens-only sporting events. If they still need more entertainment to keep them busy, the Kids Club offers origami lessons and watercolor painting as well as competitions in "Mario Kart," air hockey, foosball, pinball and more.

The Kids Club is complimentary for guests. The space is open daily, and you'll also find teen events around the ship. When it comes to dining, there are many teen-friendly dining options – where teens can even enjoy mocktails like nonalcoholic mojitos – at venues throughout the ship.

The modern Beach House lounge is the go-to place for passengers ages 13 to 17 to socialize and meet others their age when sailing on a Princess Cruises ship. Fun activities for teens include late-night movies and tournaments where they can challenge their peers in video games or at air hockey, foosball and table tennis. For more energetic activities, join in the fun during indoor dodgeball and basketball games. Or, learn new dance moves from some of the dancers in the crew, then hit the dance floor for one of the competitions. At the "Rock the Boat Party," teenagers can dress up and party the night away with mocktails and new friends on the ship.

"Movies Under the Stars" is one of Princess' signature events. Guests can watch movies, sporting events and concerts while bundled up with cozy blankets on the pool deck outdoors. Teens will enjoy the complimentary snacks – not to mention the special movie nights designed with them in mind, such as "Scary Movie Night." You might even find teen makeovers and glitter tattoos some evenings on the ship.

The line's three newest ships – Discovery Princess , Enchanted Princess and Sky Princess – offer the most activities for teens, but all of the ships in the fleet host youth programs in partnership with Discovery, along with plenty of other family-friendly activities. Parents will be able to keep track of their busy teens anywhere on the ship with the state-of-the-art Princess MedallionClass system. The quarter-size wearable medallion and accompanying app allow guests to personalize their itinerary and locate family members and friends on board.

When Sun Princess launches in February 2024, as the first vessel in the line's Sphere class, it will feature Park19. This top-deck family activity zone boasts many outdoor adventures, including Sea Breeze – the first Rollglider at sea. The ADA-accessible seated ride offers a hang-gliding experience with panoramic views of the ocean and ports of call. Families and teens can also check out the climbing obstacle course, cargo nets and lookout points. The ship also has a recreational court – which offers pingpong, shuffleboard, fitness classes and more – and a splash zone where you can cool off after all the outdoor activities.

Inside Sun Princess, tweens and teens will find two centers just for them: Neon Grove and The Underground. Both spaces offer cozy and colorful areas for young adults to hang out, socialize, and play video games on the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. They'll also find foosball, skeeball and air hockey on top of planned activities like movie nights, dance parties and scavenger hunts.

Adventures by Disney

Adventures by Disney offers river and expedition cruises for the whole family; the itineraries span many choices and experiences for tweens and teens with a focus on culture, history, gastronomy and adventure. The river cruises are operated in partnership with AmaWaterways, while the expedition cruises are a collaboration with luxury French cruise line Ponant.

If you're sailing on the Adventures by Disney Rhine River Cruise itinerary, for example, guests can choose between various exciting excursions. While you're docked in Strasbourg, France , for the day, teen-friendly options include a tour of the Black Forest, complete with a toboggan run and a visit to a woodworking museum. Another choice here is to visit Germany's Europa-Park, a one-of-a-kind theme park located between the Black Forest and the Vosges Mountains. In Melk, Austria, on the Danube itinerary, families can go for a bike ride along the Danube River, hike to the castle in Dürnstein or visit a family-run apricot farm.

Another great feature of these cruises is that teens can opt to have dinner and evening get-togethers with same-age cruisers, so they don't have to dine with their parents or younger siblings every night. Adventure Guides also curate special activities for teens like game shows and pool parties.

In destinations like Antarctica, the Adriatic and the Galápagos Islands , expert naturalists lead tours during these bucket list trips. You might even find a bit of Disney storytelling woven into the presentations by the Adventure Guides.

Keep in mind if you have younger kids as well as teens that children need to be 5 or older to sail on the river cruises. For the Galápagos Islands expedition cruises, the minimum age for Junior Adventurers is 7, and for expeditions to the polar regions, kids need to be 10 years of age or older.

Carnival Celebration, which launched in November 2022, is the line's newest Excel-class ship. It features an expanded family and youth program, including its offerings for teens. The line also rolled out the new program fleetwide in spring 2023.

The Carnival Cruise Line teen programming at Circle "C" is for tweens ages 12 to 14, while Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. In these venues you'll find entertainment like themed dance parties – and even a Carnival prom – as well as video games, movies and karaoke. Circle "C" stands for "Cruise, chill and connect," and that's what teens can do in this colorful, contemporary space with engaging counselors. New activities include anime drawing lessons and pop culture games at Circle "C." Older teens can foster new friendships while engaging in Japanese crafts and authentic tea ceremonies at Club O2.

Teens will appreciate Carnival's onboard water park, Waterworks, which includes a splash park and slides. Carnival Panorama even has the trampoline park Skyzone. Teenage passengers won't want to miss the first roller coaster at sea, BOLT, on Excel-class ships: Mardi Gras , Celebration and the upcoming Jubilee, scheduled to launch in December 2023.

For even more action, Vista-class ships feature Skyride. This two-lane, bike-like ride is suspended above the top deck of the ships and extends out over the ocean. More indoor fun can be found at Thrill Theater (on Horizon and Vista ), an immersive cinematic experience where you'll feel the seat rumble, the wind blow through your hair and even a spritz of water during the action-packed video.

This line's Teen Club features activities focused on kids 13 to 17. Some of the events offered for teens in the Camp at Sea program on Celebrity Cruises range from video game tournaments and sports competitions to culinary classes and silent disco parties. Teen cruisers can even book glass-blowing classes on Celebrity Solstice , Equinox and Eclipse . The offerings for young passengers are similar at either The Basement on Edge-series ships ( Edge , Apex , Beyond and Ascent, set to launch in November 2023) or at X Club on Solstice- and Millennium-class ships. Note, however, the line's three Galápagos expedition vessels do not have the teen venues. Families who need accessible accommodations, activities and programs will also find autism-friendly cruises on Celebrity.

When it comes to pampering, Celebrity's spas offer spa menus for 13- to 17-year-olds. Teens can book facials that are designed for young sensitive skin or have express pedicures and manicures. When you're ready to relax, schedule a two-by-two massage, where parents and kids can have a side-by-side treatment.

Celebrity also offers family-focused excursions that highlight cultural attractions, wildlife sightings and adventure. Some of these tours include seeing gentoo, king and Magellanic penguins in the Falkland Islands; taking an aerial tram through the treetop canopies of a rainforest in Costa Rica ; and going on a small culinary or sightseeing group excursion in Europe and other destinations around the world. Cunard Line

Cunard Line offers programs and activities for passengers ages 13 to 17 years old in its Teen Zone. This dedicated space is a place for teens to hang out with cruisers their own age and play video and team games, table tennis, and more. On the first day of the cruise, you'll find an activity program for young guests delivered to the stateroom so your teens can plan out their vacation experience, which may include entertaining theme days, deck sports, quizzes and dancing at the disco.

Teens on Cunard Line can participate in the activities around the ship, hit the pool for a dip, practice their putting or try their hand at croquet. There is no shortage of choices for a cruise to the Caribbean — the most popular place in the world for cruising. More than 200 cruise ships spend at least part of every year in the region. Cruise-selling websites list thousands of individual Caribbean sailings.

This can be great news for would-be Caribbean cruisers. But it also can be overwhelming. With so many options, where do you even begin? Which one of these ships and sailings is the best?

I get the latter question a lot — and I always answer the same noncommittal way: It depends. The best ship and sailing in the Caribbean for whom? The best for me? The best for you? The best for your kids?

When it comes to picking the best cruise in the Caribbean, as with picking the best cruise anywhere, a lot comes down to tastes and preferences. Some people love the big-resort feel of the biggest-of-big ships . Others are horrified by the very idea of them. Some people demand (and are willing to pay for) the highest levels of luxury . Others are on tight budgets. The best cruise for a family with kids isn’t necessarily the same as the best cruise for a couple looking for romance.

What kind of cruiser are you? It’s important to think that through before you start narrowing down your choices.

The bottom line is that the best Caribbean cruise for you depends a lot on your travel style. Below, we’ll help you narrow down the choices by looking at Caribbean cruises by broad category type. The good news is that in the Caribbean, at least, there really is something for everyone.

Best Caribbean cruise for megaresort fans: Royal Caribbean

If your idea of a great vacation is a week at a big, bustling resort filled with every sort of amusement known to humans, you’ll probably want to start your Caribbean cruise search with a look at the biggest vessels from lines like Royal Caribbean .

If “more is better” is your mantra, skip the search and look up Icon of the Seas . At 250,800 gross tons, the much-awaited, 20-deck-high vessel will be the biggest cruise ship in the world when it debuts in 2024. No ships in the Caribbean will be quite like it.

Some of Icon of the Seas’s wow factors include an unprecedentedly massive water park with six waterslides, a cantilevered infinity pool, a huge glass dome encompassing an indoor AquaTheater for acrobatic and diving shows and innovative new cabin and suite layouts for families.

Royal Caribbean offers seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings departing from Miami aboard Icon of the Seas from February 2024 through April 2026.

Eastern Caribbean itineraries vary but include stops at St. Maarten; St. Thomas; Nassau, Bahamas; Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis; San Juan, Puerto Rico and the line’s private island Perfect Day at CocoCay, in the Bahamas. At the time of publication, prices for the seven-night Eastern Caribbean cruise started from $1,731 per person. 

Western Caribbean ports of call include Puerto Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Nassau, Bahamas and Perfect Day at CocoCay. Prices start from $1,651 per person.

With at least two sea days per sailing, passengers will have ample opportunity to explore all the attractions the ship has to offer.

Best Caribbean cruise for families: Disney Cruise Line

In the family cruise arena , it’s hard to top  Disney Cruise Line. As you might expect, the line caters heavily to families in every aspect of the cruise experience — from onboard attractions to family-friendly cabin configurations.

Disney’s attention to detail transfers to its voyages on the sea. Kids are given the royal treatment with high-quality kids clubs and onboard attractions like the 765-foot-long AquaDuck water coaster. Plus, they have plenty of opportunities for photo ops with their favorite Disney characters.

Parents will find opportunities to unwind at adults-only sun decks and pool areas that are closed to kids and in bars and clubs that are off-limits to anyone younger than 18.

In addition, many cabins on Disney’s ships feature extra pull-down bunks and pull-out sofas that will allow four or even five people to stay in a single cabin. Most cabins have two bathrooms — one with a sink and a toilet and one with a sink and a shower or tub. This is rare in the cruise world, and it’s designed to make it easier for families sharing a room to get ready.

For family fun on the high seas, try a seven-night Western Caribbean cruise aboard Disney Fantasy. Departing from Port Canaveral, the ship stops in Cozumel, Mexico; George Town, Grand Cayman; Falmouth, Jamaica and Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

Also, depending on the time of year you sail, you can enjoy special onboard activities and events for Halloween or Christmas. Some itineraries also include a “Pixar Day at Sea,” which features a day of playing, dancing, swimming and dining with your favorite Pixar characters.

Prices start from $2,959, double occupancy, and include taxes, fees and port expenses.

Best budget Caribbean cruise: Carnival Cruise Line

The undisputed leader in the Caribbean cruise market when it comes to affordability is Carnival Cruise Line . Not only does Carnival offer lower fares than you’ll find at most rival lines, but it also purposely deploys its Caribbean-focused vessels to a wider variety of U.S. “home ports.” The idea is that a large percentage of the U.S. population can reach a Caribbean-bound Carnival ship by car, saving the cost of flights.

Carnival ships are packed with fun-focused attractions, including multiple pool areas, water parks with waterslides, basketball courts, miniature golf courses and even roller coasters on select ships .

The cruise line is known for its multitude of included-in-the-fare dining spots. Every vessel has two main dining rooms and a casual buffet eatery. Most ships feature two of the best quick-serve poolside dining venues you’ll find on mass-market ships at sea: BlueIguana Cantina for burritos and tacos and Guy’s Burger Joint, serving the mouthwatering burger creations of Food Network’s Guy Fieri.

Carnival ships sail to the Caribbean from all the major Florida cruise hubs but also from ports as far-flung as New York City; Baltimore; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; New Orleans; and Galveston, Texas.

The line’s 10-day Eastern Caribbean sailing from New York City on Carnival Venezia is a solid choice for budget-minded travelers seeking an affordable Caribbean escape. Passengers can swim with graceful stingrays in Gibbs Cay or tour historic Cockburn Town during a port call in Grand Turk, Turks and Caicos. In Amber Cove, Dominican Republic, take an exciting ATV tour through the lush backcountry.

Year-round sailings in 2024 offer ample itineraries to fit your schedule and budget. Rates start from $529 per person, based on double occupancy. Price does not include taxes, fees and port expenses.

Best Caribbean cruise for solo travelers: Norwegian Cruise Line

When it comes to catering to solo cruisers, the king of the hill in the Caribbean is Norwegian Cruise Line — at least among the big-ship lines. The Miami-based cruise operator in 2010 began adding entire zones for solo travelers to the center of every new ship it deployed to the region. You’ll now find these zones on Caribbean-focused vessels like Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Epic and Norwegian Prima.

Each of these solo cruiser zones, which are unrepeated in the industry for now, includes dozens of cabins for solo travelers, all clustered around each other. They also have a private lounge with a bar and television where solos can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

Known as Studio cabins, the tiny solo rooms in these complexes measure just 100 square feet. But they’re superbly designed to maximize storage space. I sailed solo in one of the cabins on Norwegian Epic, and I was smitten. I particularly loved its futuristic “Jetsons”-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat with Norwegian’s solo cabins: They’re all “inside” rooms without an ocean view. That said, most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. Another downside is that these solo cabins are so popular they often sell out far in advance and at prices that aren’t much better than booking a cabin for two.

Single cruisers seeking some extensive R&R should consider a 10-day Bermuda & Caribbean: Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic cruise out of New York City on Norwegian Getaway.

The 3,963-passenger ship is chock-full of restaurants, bars and nightspots, and fantastic entertainment, including Broadway shows. With Norwegian’s laidback dining plan, solo travelers aren’t locked into set dining times and tablemates, so can invite newly made friends to dinner at a time convenient to everyone.

Bermuda is the first stop on this six-port sailing. From there, the ship visits St. Maarten; St. Thomas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic.

Rates for a Studio cabin start from $1,499, excluding taxes, fees and port expenses.

Best Caribbean cruise for luxury lovers: Windstar Cruises

For those who wouldn’t be caught dead on a vessel that doesn’t have butler service and free-flowing caviar, the Caribbean can be a tough spot. Many of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships spend a lot of time in Europe and Asia or gallivanting around the globe on exotic world cruises . For some luxury lines, the Caribbean is almost an afterthought.

Also, you’ll usually only see luxury sailings in the Caribbean during the winter months — from December through March. For luxury cruises in the Caribbean, the period between April and October is pretty much a dead zone.

However, if an upscale cruise experience is what you seek, Windstar Cruises can deliver, and the line’s seven-night Classic Caribbean itinerary aboard Wind Surf should be on your radar.

Windstar Cruises specializes in small ships carrying between 148 and 342 passengers each. The line calls them yachts, but the ships are structured more like tiny cruise ships with indoor lounges and communal dining rooms.

The 342-passenger Wind Surf features six decks, five masts and four types of cabins (all with windows only, no balconies). Accommodations range from 188-square-foot regular cabins to 376-square-foot suites.

Windstar Cruises ships also include a water sports platform. On select days when the ship is anchored (not docked at a pier), and the weather, government regulations and planets align, passengers can enjoy varied water sports like stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and swimming right off the back of the ship. You can also lounge on a float or take in the glittering, yacht-dotted harbor from a large foam flotation island.

Wind Surf is also home to multiple dining venues, a pool and hot tubs, boutique, spa and fitness center.

The seven-night Classic Caribbean itinerary begins and ends in St. Maarten and features sun-kissed beaches, secret coves and gin-clear waters in idyllic ports of call like St. Barts, St. Kitts and Nevis, Guadeloupe, Dominica and St. Lucia.

All-inclusive rates start from $2,622 and include Wi-Fi, gratuities and unlimited beer, wine and cocktails. Cruise-only rates start from $1,999 (and excludes taxes, fees and port expenses).

Best adults-only Caribbean cruise: Virgin Voyages

The brainchild of unconventional business mogul Richard Branson, Virgin Voyages appeals to vacationers averse to the traditional cruising experience who crave a hip, party atmosphere. Ships are blissfully void of children — sailors must be over 18 — making it a prime choice for an adults-only cruise.

Virgin boasts unique onboard offerings like the first tattoo parlor at sea , lots of included dining options, free exercise classes , drag performances and an app that lets you simply shake your phone to order Champagne (which is delivered to you just about anywhere onboard). Also, fares include all meals, soda, basic Wi-Fi and crew gratuities.

Virgin’s first vessel, Scarlet Lady, launched in late 2021. The line added Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The fourth ship in the fleet, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in 2024.

Ships are filled with stylish, adult-oriented nightspots and bars promising a hopping scene late into the night and hipster venues like a colorful karaoke lounge. Onboard entertainment is inventive and often edgier than what you might see on traditional-style cruises.

Cabins sport a minimalist look with futuristic touches, and suites exude a rock ‘n’ roll vibe with in-room turntables and peekaboo showers.

The line’s Dominican Haze five-night itinerary to Bimini, Bahamas and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, sails out of Miami on the 2,700-passenger Scarlet Lady. With two sea days, the sailing offers a good mix of onboard shenanigans and port-of-call exploration. Party by the pool or swim with stingrays during your day at Virgin Voyages’ Bimini Beach Club . Chill out on a powder-white beach or go waterfall hunting in the jungle in the Dominican Republic.

Rates start from $913.75 per person, based on double occupancy (excluding taxes and fees).

Best Caribbean cruise for couples: Holland America

Holland America  offers spacious mid-size vessels that carry no more than 2,700 passengers, providing a relaxed and intimate cruising experience ideal for pairs seeking quality time at sea.

Caribbean-craving couples will be sated with the nine-day Southern Caribbean Seafarer cruise sailing out of Fort Lauderdale aboard Rotterdam. The 2,650-passenger ship is Holland America’s newest (it debuted in 2021).

In addition to a main restaurant and casual buffet, Rotterdam features five separate specialty dining venues — everything from a pan-Asian eatery to an upscale steakhouse. Extensive onboard entertainment includes clubs featuring blues and classic rock and various musical performances in the main theater. Cultural programming, pickleball lessons and food and wine tastings are among the complimentary activities available.

Of course, relaxing by the pool and indulging in a restorative spa treatment are also options.

On the Southern Caribbean Seafarer cruise, couples can visit Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay, the line’s private island in the Bahamas. An overnight stay in Curacao allows cruisers to dive deeper into the island’s history, culture and natural lures. Aruba offers diversions below and above the water, from submarine tours and snorkeling to hikes and 4×4 adventures. The stop in pristine Half Moon Cay provides an easy and relaxing beach day.

The Tigers won the first state championship in program history Saturday, taking a 78-40 victory over Fertile-Beltrami in the Class 1A boys basketball state tournament at Williams Arena.

No. 1-ranked Cherry (31-2) was making its third consecutive state tournament appearance and fourth overall. The Tigers lost in the semifinals the past two seasons, finishing fourth both times.

"It was definitely a disappointment last year," senior guard and Gophers recruit Isaac Asuma said. "We were ready to bounce back. It's a special feeling to finally bring it home."

Coach Jordan Christianson broke out the warmup shirts before the 2022-23 season. "We were good but needed to take another step," Christianson said. "We weren't great."

That all changed Saturday.

The Tigers entered the title game averaging a state-best 91 points per game, but their defense was the difference.

Cherry held the Falcons (27-7) scoreless for the opening 5 minutes, 23 seconds, running to an 11-0 lead. Fertile-Beltrami missed its first six shots and turned the ball over twice. Cherry was up 20 points, 26-6, 11 minutes in.

"We were always a step behind and a step slow," Fertile-Beltrami coach Neil Steffes said.

Junior guard Noah Sundquist, the only Tigers starter not to reach double figures in their semifinal victory, was right in the middle of the game-opening surge. He made his first six shots and had 13 points during the fast start. Sundquist wound up with 15 points and nine rebounds.

"He's been our motor all year," Christianson said. "When he starts like that it's very contagious to everyone. He's the Dennis Rodman of the Iron Range."

The Tigers led 43-21 at halftime. Sophomore forward Noah Asuma had 15 of his game-high 22 points at the break.

"They are hard to defend," Steffes said. "They are so athletic."

Isaac Asuma controlled matters without dominating the scoring. He finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. His defense showed with five blocked shots and two steals.

"I think a lot of our offense starts with our defense," he said. "I think that's what the true strength of our team is."

Senior guard Caiden Swenby paced the Falcons with 14 points. Fertile-Beltrami lost to Cherry 99-76 a month ago.

"We knew it was going to be a challenge," Swenby said. "They are one of the best teams in the state, all classes."
