15 DAYS ESSENTIAL KENYA & TANZANIA EXPEDITION

We Cannot rate this company high enough. Our experience from inquiry point was first class, very quick to respond to questions and help accommodate our requirements. Very friendly staff and great communication throughout. Assistance with visa application information provided in correspondence and also over the phone. We had a brief the day before our safari which was thorough and gave us the opportunity to ask any questions, our guide Norton was waiting for us the following morning and all though our 15 day safari was extremely knowledgeable of the areas we visited and on flora, fauna and wildlife. Norton wanted to ensure we had the best experience possible trying to locate as many different animals as possible, we managed the big 5 and many many more, thank you. We chose a luxury package at Neptune Ngorongoro which made our trip extra special. All in all we would not hesitate to use this company again, such an amazing experience, from inquiry, booking, actual trip and feedback after. The staff at Steppe Dogs Adventures work so hard to make your trip so special, thank you:)

Our 14-day Kenya and Tanzania Migration Lodge Safari was nothing short of extraordinary. From the moment we arrived in Nairobi to the final farewell, every day was filled with awe-inspiring moments and unforgettable experiences. Our adventure began with a warm welcome in Nairobi,Transfer to hotel Ole Sereni where our knowledgeable guide briefed us on the journey ahead. The luxurious accommodations provided a perfect blend of comfort and immersion in the African wilderness.African Brekafast was great!!! Amboseli National Park in Kenya was our first stop, and the sight of majestic elephants roaming against the backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro took our breath away. We witnessed thrilling wildlife encounters during our game drives, including close encounters with lions and cheetahs.Sopa lodges so magnificient. Crossing into Tanzania, border abit slow but was well organized with changing guides from Zack the genius to John M. Lake Manyara National Park enchanted us with its diverse landscapes and abundant birdlife. Spotting tree-climbing lions was a highlight, and the boat safari on Lake Manyara offered a serene perspective of the park's beauty. The Serengeti National Park was the epitome of safari magic. Witnessing the Great Migration firsthand was a dream come true as we watched thousands of wildebeests and zebras thunder across the plains. Our lodge perched on the edge of the Serengeti provided uninterrupted views of the vast savannah and unforgettable sunsets.Serena lodges are super ! Descending into the Ngorongoro Crater felt like entering a lost world teeming with wildlife. We marveled at the sheer abundance of animals in this natural amphitheater, from graceful gazelles to mighty rhinos. The grand finale awaited us in the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The Mara River crossings were the highlight of our safari, as we held our breath watching the dramatic spectacle unfold before our eyes. Our expert guide John , ensured we had front-row seats to nature's greatest show. Each evening, we gathered around the campfire under the starlit sky, sharing stories of the day's adventures and listening to the sounds of the African night. East Africa Safari Touring Company Reviews

Everything was Amazing
East Africa is a bucket-list trip and did not disappoint. We saw the big 5 and so much more. Our guide, Zach, our chef and driver were professionals and dealt with any and all issues without having them affect the trip.
The safari to Tarangire, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater and Conservation Area was excellent. The guide, Lewis, was quite knowledgeable, the accommodation better than other camp sites, and the meals very delicious. It also helped that we saw all five of the Big 5! In addition, we saw baby elephants rolling about in the mud, a pack of spotted hyena dealing with a carcass, and a male and female lion attempting to mate. Lake Manyara was a little disappointing because the heavy rains had stirred up the mud in the water and discouraged the birds from feeding there. I also felt that the guide was not as informative as Lewis. The visit to Materuni Falls was good although very muddy because of the wet weather. The food was excellent and the coffee tour very lively and entertaining.

Africa Safari Tours & Vacations

 • Africa Safari Tours & Holidays

Take a walk on the wild side on an African safari.

The word “safari” means “journey” in Swahili. And a safari in Africa is all about the journey. While seeing a leopard munch on a freshly caught gazelle or spying a curious lion cub venture away from its mother’s protective embrace will be highlights of your trip, you’ll discover the journey is as much a part of your trip as the destination.

The road-trip games you play with your new travel mates, the feeling of the wind (and maybe a little dust) in your hair when you’re travelling down long, winding roads, and the young Maasai boy who waved at you as you passed him along the road will stay with you long after you return.

The only thing more magical than witnessing the great wildebeest migration across the Serengeti? Seeing it from the sky in a hot air balloon. As the herds of wildebeest and thousands of other animals travel from Serengeti National Park to the greener pastures of the Masai Mara National Reserve, you can watch their journey and enjoy incredible views from a unique perspective.

Where we stay on safari.

Camping in Africa

On our safari trips you’ll stay in billion-star accommodation. That’s our way of saying you’re sleeping under the night sky, camping in the great outdoors. On our Basix and sections of Original trips, you’ll stay in two-person canvas tents that our crew will help you set up. And on our Comfort trips, you’ll be staying in permanent tented camps and lodges (think glamping instead of camping).

Campsite facilities can sometimes be basic, but wherever possible, we make sure there are Western-style toilets and warm water available. But you’ll find it’s worth sacrificing a warm shower or two when you’re waking up to sunrise over the Masai Mara.

How we get around

Africa overland truck

On our safari trips, your main mode of transport is an overland truck, a purpose-built vehicle made for driving through Africa’s winding, and sometimes bumpy, country roads. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The trucks are also equipped with power outlets to charge your camera, phone and other devices on the go.

For more info on our overland trucks, see our Africa overland page .

African Safari FAQs

When is the best time to go on safari.

Generally speaking, January, February and June to October are the best times to go on safari in Africa. This is the dry season, so animals tend to come out into more open spaces in search of water, making them easier to spot. However, you’ll be able to spot animals all year round and you’ll enjoy fewer crowds if you travel outside peak season.

Read more about the best time to go on safari .

Where is the best place to go on safari?

The best place to go on safari depends on what kind of animals you’d like to see and what other activities you’d like to do in destination. We offer safaris to some of the best safari destinations in eastern and southern Africa, like Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia and more.

Read more about how to choose your ideal African safari .

Am I guaranteed to see animals on safari?

While we can’t guarantee you’ll spot the Big 5, you’d have to be profoundly unlucky to see no animals at all. On our trips, you’ll explore some of the best game parks and national reserves in the world. These protected areas are filled with a huge variety of different species and your expert driver and local leader will help you spot animals.

What are the “Big 5”?

The “Big 5” used to refer to the five big game animals that were the most difficult to hunt. Now that most shooting is done on a camera, the Big 5 are the most exciting animals to spot while on safari: the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

What should I pack for safari?

Loose, light clothing in neutral colours is the best attire for a safari (dark colours will get hot in the sun and can attract the Tsetse fly). You’ll also want a sun hat, some good walking shoes, a camera, sunscreen and bug spray. For more details, check out our ultimate Africa packing guide .

What type of food will be served on safari?

On our Basix trips you’ll have a cook travelling with you while you are on safari who will whip up a variety of local flavours and Western-style dishes. Along your route, your cook will stop to purchase fresh, locally sourced food for your meals. You can expect a variety of things for breakfast like fruit, eggs, toast and cereal; lunch is often sandwiches and salads; and dinner is usually a hearty meal like pasta, curry or a BBQ.

On our Original and Comfort trips there will be more meals at camps and lodges along the way. No matter what you’re craving, you definitely will not be going hungry on safari.

What are the toilets and showers like on safari?

Most of the permanent tented camps will have a private bathroom with flushing toilets and showers with warm water.

Many of the campsites we stay at have communal facilities with flushing toilets and showers with warm water. However, in some of the more remote areas, there may only be basic facilities (toilets and cold running water).

Can you accommodate accessibility requirements on your safari tours?

We are committed to making travel accessible to everyone, so we will work with you to assess whether you will be able to complete an existing itinerary, or whether we will be able to make reasonable adjustments to meet your needs before you book. Please see our accessible travel page for more information.

What is internet and phone access like on safari?

Some of our hotels and campsites will have Wi-Fi, however Internet and phone access may be limited in more remote areas. But you won’t miss it when you’re watching a pride of lions prowl through long grass or enjoying a drink around the campfire with your group.

Responsible travel

Our stance on Animal Welfare

This world and the animals that call it home are precious, and we believe it’s our responsibility to help preserve them. We do not include or condone any activities that exploit animals on our safari trips, including hunting, feeding or interacting with animals in any way. We believe that wild animals should be observed in the wild, from a respectful distance.

Some tips for being a wildlife-friendly traveller include never buying animal products, not participating in activities that include contact with the animals, and not including location tags on social media posts (some poachers have gone high-tech and use social media to track rare animals’ locations).

Popular East Africa Safari Destinations

best east africa safari tours

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most spectacular safari destinations. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the forests of Rwanda, this region of the world offers abundant wildlife and stunning natural wonders. Here are several of the top countries in East Africa for spectacular safaris:

While East African safaris are possible year-round, many travelers aim for the annual Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya between July and October.

The dry season from July through October is considered the peak safari season in most parks. Grasslands are less dense, making it easier to see the wildlife. Large herds congregate around dwindling water sources. From July to October, you can witness the Great Migration in Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move between the countries.

Visiting during the November to June wet season has advantages too. Rains bring the landscape to life with greenery and wildflowers. The climate is also quite comfortable, aside from potential afternoon rainstorms. Ultimately the best time to visit East Africa depends on your safari goals, and we can help you find the perfect time for your trip.

With its sprawling savannas, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, East Africa offers seemingly endless options for extraordinary safaris. Here are some of the best places to visit in East Africa on safari :

 • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: The Serengeti savannas are famous for the Great Migration and are home to the Big Five. Explore the vast plains and river crossings on the ultimate wildlife safari.
 • Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Known for large lion, leopard, and cheetah populations, Masai Mara is a wildlife viewing paradise. Time your visit for the Migration's incredible sightings across the lush landscape.
 • Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania: The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO site offering remarkable scenery and wildlife density in a unique caldera setting. From cultural villages to surprising landscapes, experience the untouched beauty on safari.
 • Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Home to endangered mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers travelers a chance to trek the forested slopes to observe the surprisingly friendly gorilla families up close.
 • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda: The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a prime destination for tracking endangered mountain gorillas amidst lush rainforest terrain to spend afternoons watching the playful animals.

From up-close encounters with iconic wildlife to seeing breathtaking natural wonders, East Africa promises unforgettable safari experiences. Here are some of the top things to do in East Africa on safari :

 • See millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania during the Great Migration
 • Trek through dense rainforests to observe gorillas in their natural habitat
 • Explore the Serengeti, Masai Mara, and other reserves on guided drives to spot the Big Five and bountiful wildlife
 • Gain a unique aerial perspective flying over the Serengeti plains during sunrise on a hot-air balloon safari
 • Descend into the massive Ngorongoro Crate for close-up sightings of lions, elephants, rhinos, and more
 • Discover nocturnal wildlife like leopards, bush babies, and hyenas on specialized nighttime game drives
 • Learn about Maasai traditions and way of life when visiting a village community

The diversity of iconic African wildlife you may encounter on an East African safari is truly phenomenal. Each park promises different highlights and concentrations of animals to discover, and here are some of the most notable creatures:

 • Nile crocodiles

An East African safari is a true adventure, so come prepared with proper attire and gear to make the most of your experience . We suggest safari-goers pack the following in addition to one’s typical packing list:

 • Neutral, light-colored clothing
 • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
 • Long pants for bush walks
 • Hiking boots or walking shoes
 • Camera with a zoom lens and extra memory cards
 • Insect repellent
 • UV protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

Safaris throughout East Africa are safe.

Countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have incredible reputations as premier safari destinations, with wildlife posing little threat when proper precautions are taken. By following the instructions and guidance of your expert game rangers and the park rules, you can safely observe wildlife in their natural habitats.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing or luggage theft can happen but are uncommon during East African safaris within the tourism infrastructure. Simple vigilance in securing valuables and working closely with your guides will minimize any security issues.

Whether you seek the classic savanna wildlife spectacle or prefer going beyond the beaten path, we can help you find the best East African safari itinerary and tailor the perfect trip just for you. Here are some of our most popular safaris to inspire your travels:

 • Embark on the ultimate East African adventure with our Wildlife Wonder: 11-Day Kenya and Tanzania safari, pairing Kenya's renowned Masai Mara with Tanzania's iconic Serengeti for a comprehensive big game experience.
 • Venture beyond the well-trodden safari trail to the hidden wonders of East Africa on our Untouched East Africa: 11-Day Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda journey, combining wildlife, culture and natural beauty in Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda.

List of National Parks in Kenya and Game Reserves

A Kenya Safari

The breathtaking annual wildebeest migration takes place in Kenya’s renowned Masai Mara reserve between August and November each year, but it also has one of the most diversified resident wildlife populations year-round. The Amboseli and Samburu wildlife reserves are among the top attractions in Kenya safaris. Gorilla trekking, tropical islands like Seychelles, and Tanzania’s best reserves go well along with Kenya.

A BEGINNER'S SAFARI GUIDE TO TANZANIA

Wildebeest migration in Tanzania

The Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater , and Lake Manyara, three of Tanzania’s most well-known safari locations, are conveniently located close to one another on the “ Northern Safari Circuit ” and, along with Tarangire, offer some of Africa’s best Big 5 game watching and wildebeest migration safaris. Uncrowded wildlife watching is available in outstanding reserves like Ruaha, Selous, and Katavi in south-central Tanzania, which is less well known. The exotic Mahale Mountains surrounding Lake Tanganyika are fascinating for an out-of-the-way trip into the bush; you’ll find chimpanzee forests and magnificent clouds of butterflies there. Tanzania is home to the Serengeti, where the wildebeest migration takes place from January to August, as well as Africa’s highest peak, the only snow-capped summit on the continent.

Uganda: Gorilla trekking & game viewing

Are Gorillas Dangerous.

gorilla trekking in Bwindi

Mountain gorillas , which are in peril, can be found in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest . Thanks to a ground-breaking collaboration between local residents, national parks, and tourists who trek to view them, the gorilla population is expanding. The opportunity to observe wild gorillas in their native habitat, free from fences or other human interference other than a slow acclimatization process in the jungle, makes gorilla trekking one of Africa’s most extraordinary and unforgettable experiences. Uganda is a well-known spot for birdwatching, with exotic migrating species and a variety of prolific permanent species. The Kibale Forest offers the best up-close chimpanzee interactions in Africa, and Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Park s both offer uncommon combination safaris with big primates and big animals.

Rwanda: Africa’s easiest gorilla trekking

When it comes to an East Africa safari, tiny Rwanda punches above its weight. Fly into Kigali, the country’s capital, and you’ll be in the lush Volcanoes National Park, where many mountain gorilla families call home, in a matter of hours. Safaris in Tanzania, Kenya, and tropical islands like Zanzibar go nicely with Rwanda’s gorilla trekking.

The Top 10 African Safari Tours in 2021

Scott Bay is a magazine editor specializing in travel, architecture, and gear. He was previously an assistant editor at Travel + Leisure . His work has also appeared in Wired , Architectural Digest , Wallpaper , Robb Report , Saveur , Daily Beast , and more.

This year's World's Best Awards survey was open for voting January 11 through May 10, 2021, as destinations around the world were lifting COVID-19 restrictions. Survey rules have always allowed readers to reflect on their travel experiences over a three-year period. We hope that this year's honorees will inspire your own travels as you get back out into the world.

A safari tops most of Travel + Leisure readers' bucket lists — a trip that many spend a lifetime daydreaming about , saving for, and eventually splurging on. On this type of adventure, travelers pull out all of the stops and have high expectations. One of the best ways to have that dream trip live up to expectations is to hire one of the best safari outfitters, as voted by the discerning readers of T+L.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The safari companies favored by T+L readers owe much of their success to the talented advisors, who get to know their clients so they can create truly customized trips. "We couldn't have worked with a better group of people," one reader said of No. 5 winner Travel Beyond. "They were friendly, efficient, informative, and made sure our entire trip went smoothly. We never had a care."

Each safari outfitter also displays a deep connection to the national world and conservation efforts . Readers felt that No. 10 andBeyond particularly excelled in this area: "They have an excellent commitment to local communities, protecting wildlife and the environment." Another reader said of No. 9 Wilderness Safaris, "Their commitment to local communities and protecting wildlife is outstanding."

Read on to see the full list of T+L readers' picks for the best safari outfitters — all of which not only make spotting the Big Five easy but also arrange unparalleled perks and accommodations.

1. Micato Safaris

This company has been voted onto T+L's list of the world's best safari outfitters every year since the awards' inception — and for good reason. The family-run business has deep roots in Kenya, and its owners' love for the country (and continent) is evident in the way they operate. Each itinerary, whether private or with a group, is tailored to be the most luxurious, comfortable, and exciting adventure possible. Readers couldn't say enough kind words about their recent trips. "Never met tour guides or staff that were so friendly and knowledgeable about the animals and the locations and the culture," wrote one reader. "They seemed to have a sixth sense for anticipating our needs. It was really something." A few more touted Micato's reputation, with one saying, "Simply the best safari outfitter in Africa. Bar none."

According to the United Nations scheme of geographic regions, 20 territories make up East Africa . It sits equidistant from the equator and The Tropic of Cancer. East Africa is a land of vast open spaces and thereby serves as a playground for many unique and fascinating animals.

Our East Africa Tours are brimming with African and Middle-eastern culture complimented by exciting wildlife populations. In this region you will experience the ‘Big Five’ wildlife along with a unique landscape comprising of lakes and mountains. Some of the highlights of East Africa include the colourful Masai Mara tribe along with various national parks. Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya are also popular stops as the two tallest peaks in Africa.

When is the best time to travel to East Africa?

The size and variety in East Africa means that it is a year round destination. However certain highlights are seasonal and are best visited during specific months.

Tanzania is ideal during July and August when the weather is mild. This period is also ideal game viewing conditions in the Serengeti as the animals usually migrate to Kenya’s Masai Mara during the dry season. December to mid March is the calving season (when young animals are born) in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater making this timing perfect for game viewing.

June to October is great for Zanzibar as the temperature is around 28 degrees Celsius perfect for lazy beach days.

Kenya plays home to the migration across the Mara River during July to September . Wildlife usually stay in the Masai Mara until November before heading back to the Serengeti. Typically most travelers enjoy the hot dry months of Jan and Feb as this is great for bird watching. Birds of all species flock in huge numbers to the lakes such as Lake Nakuru which is a hub for flamingos.

Uganda experiences a very dry period during the months of June through to September while April to October are not ideal due to the rainy season.

What are the Highlights of East Africa?

Game viewing.

Game viewing through East Africa is exquisite, and perfectly combines Africa’s top three national parks. Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater , and the Masai Mara National Reserve are rich with fauna and flora. From August through to September, the Masai Mara boasts the incredible wildebeest migration , and is the peak for wildlife and game viewing action. The migration is when almost 1.5 million wildebeest traverse the landscapes along with thousands of zebra, antelope and big cats. Some travelers have even been lucky enough to spot both lion and cheetah kills on their first day in the park!

The Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater lie adjacent to each other and are both wonderful year-round game-viewing destinations. The Ngorongoro was once an active volcano, but is now a caldera with its own unique eco-system. Boasting a diverse range of plant life on the crater floor and rim, which attracts a variety of wildlife and bird species. Drawing in lion, zebra, antelope and other big cats. In the middle of the crater, there are small lakes surrounded by lush marshlands. This areas is home to a wide diversity of birdlife, as well as hippo!

Adventure Activities

Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania offers climbing enthusiasts the opportunity to climb to new heights. The mountain is not only for champion mountaineers. If you’ve got warm clothes, a well-equipped guide and a lot of determination you’re halfway there. Anyone who puts their mind to it can summit Africa’s highest mountain. This exhilarating experience lets you see the sunrise over what seems like half of Africa spread out below.

Alternatively if coming face to face with a family of mountain gorillas is on your bucketlist then Uganda is the place to go. The experience entails you have to find the gorillas which is tricky in the forested, muddy and steep National Park where they live. Once you reach them, you are able to come within a few meters of these amazing creatures and sometimes they even come up to touch you. Watching them as they feed, play and groom lets you marvel at just how human-like these peaceful apes are.

Travel styles in East Africa

We have many options of travel packages offering either camping or accommodated tours . Camping in East Africa lends itself to an authentic experience of everything Africa has to offer. All campsites en-route are well situated and most have flushing toilets. A long hot shower may not always be available to you at the end of each day due to crowds and availability. It may be better to shower upon arrival at the campsite or shower the next morning to avoid peak hours of 7-9. However a budget camping tour to East Africa still offers you the ability to see and do so much while enjoying the raw beauty of Africa.

Alternatively you may prefer your creature comforts in which case we have the perfect accommodated tour for you to East Africa. Get the most out of your tour by ensuring that you have a good night’s rest in the many hotels, lodges or guest houses available.

You will still experience rural Africa and the typical African wildlife roaming around outside whilst you are sleeping. Essentially accommodated tours are the perfect balance allowing you to spend your evenings writing your adventurous memoirs, playing board games or listening to the sounds of Mother Nature.

End of the Highlights of East Africa Tour

My wife and I recently did Highlights of East Africa, followed immediately by Historical Jordan, with Bench. Both tours were excellent! The organisation was first class and almost all the hotels were very good, with an interesting range of properties across both tours. The guides were very good indeed and the way the tours were managed on the ground was outstanding. We had a wonderful holiday and would recommend Bench to anyone thinking of doing tours like this. The only minor negative was the appallingly bad and inefficient service (in the restaurant and in Reception) at an otherwise beautiful property - the Sopa Lake Nakuru.

Knowledgeable and Professional

We recently visited Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania. Bench were recommended by friends and we worked with Steph to organise our trip. Right from the outset her knowledge of travel in Africa and her professionalism were outstanding. Her suggestions, recommendations and travel tips were spot on and made our trip an amazing experience. For example Steph suggested we visit the Gorillas in Rwanda early in our trip. If you are unwell at the time you wish to make the trek, you may not be allowed to visit the gorilla group (to protect them from human diseases). Another factor was that the treks (we did two) can be quite difficult and with our energy levels high early in the trip it was certainly better than attempting the treks after two or three weeks of travelling. The tours, lodges and tented camps Steph included in our itinerary made for a variety of excellent game viewing and experiences. Also, on one occasion we had a flight cancelled (not booked by Bench) which disrupted our travel plans prior to picking up a tour that Bench had booked. We contacted the Bench "help desk" and they promptly and professionally contacted the tour and transfer companies as well as our hotel for the night to update them on our delayed arrival. In summary, we would highly recommend Steph and Bench for any travel in Africa and wouldn't hesitate to use them again in future.

East Africa Safari/Victoria Falls

Easy company to deal with. Safari was excellent, fantastic sights. Road travel challenging but more than made up for by great accommodation. Extremely knowledgeable and helpful guides. This was a great trip.

THE ONLY WAY TO GO!

Fantastic experience from the booking all the way through to returning home!

Had the best time in Tanzania and …

Had the best time in Tanzania and Kenya. From first speaking with Maria about a year ago to getting home safe and sound and very happy with our experience. The guides the accommodation the animals the people, everything was more than we expected.

Tanzania, Kenya, Victoria Falls and South Africa, absolutely AMAZING!

We booked and chose our African experience through our local travel agent. After perusing all the booklets and catalogues available on Africa, Bench International had by far the more comprehensive trips and covered exactly what we were looking for. They covered a variety of levels of accommodation, sights and tour sizes. We were looking for small group, personalised safari's staying in secure accommodation along with a self-drive garden route finish within our budget. Bench put together the most amazing 5 weeks of our lives in August/September this year, covering our total wish list and more. They then provided ALL the information possible in a travel booklet including our itinerary, country information, approximately what amount of money we would require, tipping advice etc that we used like a bible on a daily basis. We started our trip in Arusha where we arrived at lunch time and had the afternoon to spare. Our Bench advisor 'Charles' who met at us our Hotel after being collected from the airport by our first tour guide 'Edwin', advised us not to leave the secured grounds of our accommodation. At our disappointment of being stuck in a room all afternoon (after 5 flights from Australia over the previous 2 days) Charles went over and beyond our expectations and arranged for a friend to come and collect us and take us for a 31/2 hour walk through Arusha and experience the local people and markets, then onto the local Tanzanite museum. We felt very secure in his company and had the most amazing insight into this city that would otherwise never have been available to us. The next morning 'Edwin' began our 7 day, Tanzanian part of the '12 day Highlights of East Africa' tour including Ngorongoro Crater, Serengeti N/P & Lake Manyara N/P. Bench matched us perfectly with another couple of similar age and personality to make our small group tour extremely enjoyable - and found us new life long friends. Edwin had over 10 years experience as a tour guide and was extremely knowledgeable and could not do enough for us before leaving us at the Kenyan border for 'Freddie' our next very experienced tour guide. Freddie took us on to Amboseli N/P, Masai Mara Game Reserve, Lake Nakuru & Nairobi. By the time Freddie completed our Highlights of East Africa tour, we had seen ALL of the Big 5, some several times over! This included a Lioness killing a Warthog, Leopard attack on Gazelle, mating Rhino's & Lions, many Elephants and Buffalo on a daily basis - ALL at very close range. AMAZING! From here we flew to Zimbabwe for 4 days at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge. We are so glad Bench offered the extra optional activities of a Helicopter flight over Victoria Falls & the Zambezi River which gives a whole different appreciation of this landscape from the sky; Elephant Back Safari and Lion encounter which gave us very personal time learning about these amazing animals and walking/riding with them through their natural environment and not in caged areas. From here we flew to Cape Town and on our own began a 12 day self-drive Garden Route trip. With a suggestion list from Bench we explored Cape Town, the Winelands and the garden route up to Port Elizabeth. Our hire car & accommodation once again was perfectly arranged to our taste and budget. During our trip we stayed in top hotels, tented lodges and on a coffee farm. All this accommodation was immaculate, well presented and many provided 3 meals a day including a packed lunch box on the days we were on Safari drives. At no time on our tour did we feel unsecure as our guides were local people with great local knowledge. Everything went perfectly to plan with our very experienced tour guides Edwin and Freddie offering over and above what we expected. We would highly recommend Bench International to anyone and if we were ever to return to these beautiful countries would never travel with anyone else. Thank you Bench and your tour staff for a once in a lifetime most amazing holiday to Africa. Rob & Carleen Hargreaves, Queensland

 • From here, fly to Sasaab Lodge in Samburu National Reserve , home to the colorful Samburu tribe, semi-nomadic pastoralists who have long shown tolerance for the wildlife that co-exists alongside their cattle. Go on game drives to search for Kenya’s classic big game in addition to the “Samburu Special Five,” unique desert-adapted species found north of the equator, or camel treks , bush walks , quad biking , and cultural visits, or spend a night fly camping in the bush.
 • Next, fly to Sala’s Camp the in Maasai Mara National Reserve , which offers excellent wildlife and birdlife viewing year-round, but it is also one of the first camps in the Mara to witness the legendary Great Migration , which thunders by from June to September each year. In addition to game drives and classic safari activities, make time for a game of "beach" volleyball one afternoon in the dry riverbed!
 • Your next destination is Lamai Serengeti in Serengeti National Park (Tanzania), where the migration is on your doorstep between late July and October. Head to the crossing points on the Mara River to catch a glimpse of the wildebeest dodging crocs and hippo.
 • If you’re in a group or traveling as a family, round off your trip with a stay at the exclusive Mkombe’s House, which comes with its own team of private guides and house staff.
 • Fly to Kilimanjaro International Airport.

$14,400 - $21,950 per person sharing in 2024

5 Best East African Safaris That You Should Not Miss

East Africa, the region stretching from Uganda and Kenya in the north to Tanzania in the south, is widely recognized as one of the best places to travel for safaris on the African continent. But with so many potential east African safaris on offer, it can be difficult to know what and where to choose. After all, would-be travelers must decide between the Maasai Mara and Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and Murchison Falls National Park among a multitude of other destinations in the region. If you’re struggling to decide, our guide to the 5 best east African safaris is sure to help!

Great Wildebeest Migration Safaris

wildebeest-migration

The stuff of nature documentaries, the Great Wildebeest Migration is an annual movement of up to 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra, and impala. They take a route across the near-unending plains of the Serengeti in Tanzania, between the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Victoria, before turning north to cross the crocodile infested waters of the Mara River in neighboring Kenya.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a phenomenal east African safaris spectacle, opening up the full circle of life from birth to death. It also provides ample opportunities to catch sight of the region’s lions, cheetahs and leopards. They closely follow the mass herds, alongside iconic African animals such as elephants and giraffes. They mingle with the wildebeest throughout a trek that takes individual animals an impressive 300 miles each and every year.

Mountain Gorilla Safaris

gorilla-trekking-in-uganda

A completely different experience from the vehicle led east African safaris of the Great Wildebeest Migration, mountain gorilla safaris are all about delving into the thick jungle vegetation of Uganda and Rwanda on foot. The aim is to encounter the majesty and mystery of animals only discovered by the outside world in the year 1902.

Sadly, the following one hundred years was dominated by a decline in their number due to the bush meat trade, habitat destruction, and disease. Their numbers fell to just a few hundred individuals, making them one of the most endangered species on the planet.

Thankfully, a revival in their fortunes has gone hand in hand with a growing number of visitors looking to encounter these wonderfully caring, family-orientated creatures in their natural habitat. Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park are the best places to head, although trekking permits can run out quickly, so be sure to book in plenty of time!

Murchison Falls Safaris

murchison-falls

We know what you’re thinking – a safari on a waterfall? How does that work? The answer – magnificently.

An unmissable part of any Uganda safaris worth their salt, a trip to Murchison Falls National Park is easily combined with gorilla trekking, creating two center east African safaris that rival anything else the region can boast.

The largest and most popular of Uganda’s ten protected areas, Murchison Falls National Park is cleaved into two parts by the Victoria Nile. It takes its name from a narrow gorge which pushes the world’s longest river into a channel just seven meters wide before its churning whitewater crashes over 40 meters.

It creates an ideal habitat for animals as diverse as hippos, Ugandan kob, and Goliath heron. A top way to explore this Ramsar wetland is therefore by boat. Meanwhile, the surrounding grassland provides sustenance for safari favorites including herds of elephants, prides of lions, and groups of highly-endangered Rothschild’s giraffes.

Ngorongoro Crater Safaris

ngorongo

Officially known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, this UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Tanzania is centered around the planet’s largest inactive and intact volcanic crater. With a floor which covers an incredible 100 square miles, it has become a world within a world with an ecosystem believed to contain 25,000 large animals including black rhinos, Cape buffaloes, elephants and water bucks. There are also east African wild dogs, spotted hyenas and one of the region’s densest populations of lion.

But the Ngorongoro Conservation Area also provides a rare opportunity on east African safaris to delve into the lives of the region’s pastoralists. The Maasai have grazed their cattle on its grasses, within sight of its amazing array of wildlife, for decades if not hundreds of years.

In fact, the conservation area also contains Olduvai Gorge, a hugely important prehistoric site where archeologists have discovered remnants of early humans which have been dated to 1.9 million years ago.

Chimp Tracking Safaris

chimp-africa

Almost three times to the size of the Ngorongoro Crater, Kibale National Park is primarily formed of evergreen rainforest situated in the hills of Uganda’s west. It protects one of the last remaining areas of pre-montane forest accessible on east African safaris such as our 15 day Uganda tour .

In some ways an extension of Queen Elizabeth National Park, Kibale National Park creates a wildlife corridor which has become a top destination for those looking to track chimpanzees. Those who join the park’s rangers have a 90% chance of seeing these intelligent creatures, thanks to the park’s very high density and concentration of primates. There are no less than 13 different species of primate in total, including chimps, red colobus monkeys, and largely unheard of L’Hoest’s monkeys.

Beyond its primates, the park is well used by elephants, while leopards, serval, and African golden cats all enjoy its tree cover. But if that’s not enough of an impetus to book a safari, check out these other great things to do in Uganda !

The Best East African Safaris

East African Safaris are as diverse as the region is itself. There’s plenty of opportunity to go on traditional vehicle-led safaris across the plains of parks, such as the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, in order to take in the enormity of the Great Wildebeest Migration.

But stepping out of the 4x4s and Land Cruisers, the best east African safaris also provide the chance to get out on the water of the River Nile at Murchison Falls National Park, and crisscross the jungles of Uganda and Rwanda in search of mountain gorillas and chimpanzees.

What unites all these incredible experiences is the wealth of wildlife you’ll encounter, including Big 5 species such as black rhino, elephant, and lion.

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

best east africa safari tours

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

best east africa safari tours

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.

80-year-old American tourist killed in elephant attack during game drive in Zambia

 • Copy Link copied

HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — A bull elephant charged a truck that an 80-year-old American was riding in with other tourists on a game drive in a Zambian national park, flipping over the vehicle and killing her, a safari company said.

The attack injured five others on March 30 in the vast Kafue National Park , which covers 22,400 square kilometers (8,600 square miles) and is one of Africa’s largest animal reserves.

According to the safari company Wilderness, the “aggressive” bull elephant unexpectedly charged at the truck, which was carrying six guests and a guide on a morning excursion through wild areas.

It wasn’t clear what upset the bull. But in a video widely circulated online, the pachyderm is seen menacingly charging through the bushy terrain toward the tourists’ vehicle. A man is heard shouting “hey hey hey,” in apparent but futile efforts to scare it away. It reaches the truck and flips it over using its trunk.

Another female tourist was seriously injured and flown by helicopter to South Africa for treatment while the rest were treated for minor injuries, the company said.

“This is a devastating incident for everyone involved and we are doing our best to support the family and all affected,” Tarryn Gibson, the safari company’s head of communications told The Associated Press on Thursday. Gibson did not identify the tourist who was killed, and said her family wished for privacy. The company also asked people to not share the video of the attack online.

If hikers, bikers, campers, hunters and other outdoor enthusiasts haven't encountered a mountain lion while in the California wilderness, they likely know somebody who has. The big cats that can weigh more than 150 pounds (68 kg) inhabit diverse habitats across the state where people live and recreate, including inland forests, coastal chaparral, foothills and mountains. While many wildlife parks in southern Africa teem with dangerous animals like elephants and lions, such incidents are rare, although they sometimes do occur with fatal consequences due to the unpredictability of wild animals.

Keith Vincent, chief executive officer of the safari company, said rough terrain minimized chances of an escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough” he said.
