Who says you can't see the world if you stay home? Virtual reality (VR) tourism experiences let you see places all over the world without ever leaving your couch. These aren't games; they're experiences, so the pace may be slower than you expect, but they are worth your patience. Here are some of the best VR tourist destinations to help you decide on your next virtual adventure.

Make sure your computer is beefy enough to handle the demands of virtual reality technology.

The Grand Canyon VR Experience

Very relaxing experience.

Excellent visual and sound quality.

Impressive attention to detail.

Predefined with little control.

Requires powerful hardware.

Short experience.

In The Grand Canyon VR Experience ($2.99 by Immersive Entertainment), you sit in a virtual motorized kayak ride through the Grand Canyon. Tailor the tour to your preferences by selecting either a sunlit or moonlit experience and controlling the ride's speed.

While you cruise along, you'll enjoy the sights and sounds of procedurally generated, artificially intelligent wildlife. Attract and feed the virtual fish as you navigate the waterways.

The ride is on rails, so you can't steer the kayak. However, you can stop at various points and enjoy the scenery by using the throttle speed controls of your motorized kayak or by exiting at scenic rest stops.

The tour is short, and there's no historical background information for history buffs. Still, it is a fun ride perfect for someone new to VR.

This tour requires one of the following virtual reality headsets: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift , or Valve Index .

Explore amazing places.

Impressively detailed.

More locations are added to the library regularly.

Not updated recently.

Realities (free from Realities.io ) is a VR travel app that allows you to explore scanned and modeled real-world environments. The environments aren't just 360-degree photos; these locations were captured with specialized scanning equipment, allowing for immersive rendering in virtual reality.

The user interface is a giant globe you rotate with your VR controllers. Once you decide on the place you want to visit, tap the area on the virtual globe, and you are instantly whisked away to the exotic locale.

One interesting destination is a cell in the infamous Alcatraz prison. When you arrive, you're greeted by an unseen narrator, presumably a former prisoner in the cell next to you, who recalls their experiences. It's museum-like and an educational adventure worth having.

There are other destinations of varying size and complexity, and the experience is updated with new realities regularly.

This experience is compatible with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality .

Titans of Space PLUS

Great soundtrack.

Detailed 3D visuals.

Impressive sense of scale.

Flying through space makes some users feel nauseated.

No improvements since late 2019.

Do you like planetariums? Have you always wished they were more realistic? If you've ever dreamed of riding in a spaceship and exploring the solar system and beyond, Titans of Space PLUS ($9.99 by DrashVR LLC) helps make this a reality—at least a virtual one).

The original Titans of Space was one of the first polished virtual reality experiences available; it created a lot of buzz about all the potential VR had to offer.

This app provides a theme park-style ride through the solar system and beyond, allowing you to control the pace of the experience. Factoids about the planets and moons are provided throughout your journey, as are distances and other measurements of interest.

The sense of scale of the planets and moons is truly awe-inspiring and gives a unique perspective only astronauts usually get to have.

This title runs in both standard and VR modes. It does not require a VR headset. It is compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Impressive rendering technology.

Auto-tunes for your GPU.

Stunning visuals.

Can feel slow.

Mostly narration with little hands-on time.

Everest VR ($9.99 from Sólfar Studios ) is an interactive Mount Everest VR tourism experience.

You'll experience Mount Everest in five iconic scenes. Prepare for your expedition at Basecamp, traverse the terrifying Khumbu Icefalls, spend the night at Camp 4, ascend the perilous Hillary Step, and finally conquer the summit of Everest.

After completing your first summit attempt, unlock God Mode to reach a unique vantage point of the Himalayas that's only possible in VR. Towering over the mountain range, this is a stunning VR diorama.

EVEREST VR is a must if you're into mountain climbing but don't like its possible death and frostbite aspects.

Requires one of the following virtual reality headsets: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, or Valve Index.

The VR Museum of Fine Art

Lots of content.

Educational experience.

Hasn't been updated since its initial release.

No voice narration.

Only takes about 20 minutes to experience.

If you've ever wanted to peruse a museum at your own pace with no limits on how close you can get to the artwork, then The VR Museum of Fine Art (free from Finn Sinclair) is for you.

This free app holds amazing educational value with incredibly detailed scans of some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. Look at the brushstrokes of Monet's Water Lilies or take a 360-degree tour of Michelangelo's David. This is an art lover's delight.

The experience makes you feel as if you're visiting a museum, complete with a pamphlet map to help you navigate your way around the exhibits.

Great VR experience.

Incredibly realistic.

Contains three episodes.

theBlu ($9.99 from Wevr INC .) is a collection of virtual reality-based underwater experiences that make you feel as if you're literally in the tank of a huge aquarium exhibit.

Stand on the deck of a sunken ship while a gargantuan whale swims by and looks you straight in the eye or swim in a sea of bioluminescent jellyfish. There's no need for expensive scuba equipment or diving classes, or even to leave your living room, for that matter.

The level of detail in this app is amazing, and the sense of scale (especially during the whale encounter in the first episode) is jaw-dropping.

Compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Google Earth VR

Amazing street view VR.

Travel the world virtually.

Impressive, vast experience.

Can be slow to load.

Lacks a search feature.

May cause motion sickness.

When Google Earth was released many years ago, everyone marveled at the novelty of finding and viewing their house from satellite imagery. Now, Google Earth VR (free from Google) lets you see your house from space and virtually fly to it and stand in your front yard or on your rooftop.

Change the sun's position, scale objects to any size you like, and fly around the world. The detail levels depend on what you're trying to view. For example, tourist destinations are likely to have more detailed geospatial imagery than rural areas. There is so much to see, and Google offers virtual tours to help you get started.

Google has even added several comfort features to prevent virtual travel sickness in this must-see virtual reality app.

There are a huge number of VR companies all vying to create ever more unique experiences for consumers – and one of the biggest growth categories has been travel. And what better time to get a taste of exploration and adventure from the comfort of your living room, equipped only with a VR headset, than now, when travel is a luxury that many just can’t stretch to? We’ve picked out 10 of the best virtual reality travel experiences currently on the market.

So which VR headset should you go for? Our favourite is the Meta Quest 3, which launched onto the market in mid-2023 and is the successor to the Meta Quest 2. For immersive games and travel experiences, we believe the Meta Quest 3 is destined to become the leading VR headset over the coming years. It’s pretty affordable, too, and unlike other headsets, doesn’t require cords or a computer. You can purchase the Meta Quest 3 at Amazon.com.

Guided Meditation VR

Developed by Cubicle Ninjas, Guided Meditation VR is designed to bring peace, joy, and calm back into your daily life by teaching you ancient meditation practices in a cutting-edge way. It features over 40 lush environments to escape the everyday, 30-plus hours of guided meditations on anxiety, depression, maternity, resilience, sleep and zen, and hundreds of hours of calming musical audio tracks to help enhance your meditation experience. Users can also customise their sessions to their own specific preferences and needs, including the option to switch into Motion mode and gently float through beautiful vistas like you would on a lazy river, leaving the worries of your life behind before returning calmer and stronger.

Rome Reborn: The Pantheon

Created by Flyover Zone, an American company specialising in virtual travel applications that present the world’s most important cultural heritage sites and monuments, Rome Reborn is one of five applications that present different areas of ancient Rome. This particular one transports users over the entire ancient city, focussing on the Pantheon, perhaps the best-preserved building from antiquity. In the company of two virtual guides, you’ll get to explore the exterior forecourt and interior sanctuary of the reconstructed complex as you listen and learn about the Pantheon’s design and decoration, as well as the nature of the religious cult once housed within it.

Monte Fitzroy is Argentina’s most famous mountain landmark and is even used as the logo for outdoor retailer, Patagonia. It is a place that immediately evokes a sense of adventure. At the foot of the mountain is a beautiful and remote glacial lake known as Laguna Sucia. Most people who visit Monte Fitzroy view it from a location that is much easier to access. Laguna Sucia requires a much tougher hard-to-access trail that culminates in one of the most beautiful and remote glacial lakes in existence. You are rewarded with a sense of almost meditative stillness as you approach this untouched natural amphitheatre. This VR experience utilises Pterovision, a 3D technology that integrates computational photography, 360 Video, and gaming and allows you to take off like a bird, fly around the lake, visit the waterfalls along the edge, and fly over glacial formations beneath the mountain peaks. Numerous narrations will tell you about the challenges we faced when filming in this location, as well as educate you about the geology, culture, and history.

The Discoverer logo

The threat of the COVID-19 means international travel is mostly off the table for the foreseeable future, especially for us Americans.  But, if you miss the feeling of genuine discovery that comes with international and adventure travel, now might be a great time to get a pair of Virtual Reality (VR) goggles.

I'm an avid traveler, and one of the saddest things for me about this pandemic was knowing it will be a long time before I travel internationally again. Recently, and somewhat begrudgingly, my husband and I purchased a pair of Oculus Quest VR goggles for my teen daughter who's been begging for a pair.  We figured it might be a good escape for her during quarantine.  As it turns out, they're great fun for all of us!

While my daughter is using them to ride incredibly “ Epic ” roller coasters or play Beat Saber , I've been having a blast traveling to places like Mt. Everest, Angel Falls, and Petra.  The immersive, 360° experience provides me nearly the same feeling of wonder as I feel when I travel.  In fact, the experience is so good that my husband and I agreed not to travel virtually to places on our bucket list because it's too good a preview of the real thing.

Virtual Reality Basics

VR goggles run the gamut from inexpensive headsets that use your phone as the screen all the way up to high-end computers that you wear on your face , but no matter your budget or needs, there will be opportunities for you to virtually explore the world.

At the most basic level, companies that specialize in VR content have created videos you can watch on the integrated YouTube app in the headset.  In fact, you can preview these videos on your computer before you even put on your headset.  Search “360 VR travel” in YouTube , and you’ll find thousands of 360 videos from all around the world.  Many of these short videos fly you over famous travel destinations such as Petra or the Matterhorn by using circular, drone-based, video cameras to capture experiences you’d never get by just being there.

Just a word of caution:  if you have a fear of heights, don’t look down!

Best VR Travel Apps for Oculus Quest

We decided the Oculus Quest (which has been hard to find since the pandemic began) was the best option at the best price point for our family. It can be used as a wireless, standalone headset, or optionally connected to a PC for more intense gaming experiences. Since I have the most experience with Quest, here are my recommendations for the best travel apps on that system.

Wander uses Google Street View to allow you to go anywhere around the globe.  You can teleport using the integrated map, or let the app choose a random destination for you.  While looking around on the map was fun, I was a bit overwhelmed by being able to go literally anywhere, and the random destination was sometimes just a bit too random. Luckily, Wander has a feature called “Collections” where you can choose interesting starting points in various destinations. I tried using Collections for Singapore since I’ve never been. I was able to visit some of its famous temples, look up at the amazing skyscrapers, and walk under the Supertree Grove .‌‌

National Geographic Explore VR

National Geographic has created an immersive travel game for two destinations, Machu Picchu and Antarctica .  The game starts you out at a National Geographic base-camp where you’re given a photography assignment. Once you choose your destination, the virtual guide helps you navigate the location as well as interact with objects and historical re-enactments.  I found myself in awe at how steep the cliffs were at Machu Picchu and at how high above me the glaciers were in Antarctica.  There were limited “walking” opportunities, however, so unlike Wander, I couldn’t go wherever I wanted within the destination. For instance at Machu Picchu, I wanted to explore more of the citadel, but the app made me stay in only a few locations of programmed interactions.‌‌

Best VR 360 Videos for any VR Headset

With more and more 360° VR videos being produced every day, the options to travel the world are endless. To find any of these videos, simply access the YouTube app on your headset (or on your smartphone in the case of phone-based VR headsets ), and search for wherever you want to go. The videos are shot using circular cameras on drones or carried by the photographer with a camera pole.  Personally, I like to watch these on a swivel chair so I can look at the view in all directions.‌‌

LIFE VR, Sports Illustrated - “Capturing Everest”

LIFE VR and Sports Illustrated teamed up to create a collection of short minute videos that follow climbers as they climb Mt. Everest.  While I have climbed some tall mountains such as Mt. Kilimanjaro, I’ve never quite had the courage to attempt Mt. Everest.  But this made it easy!  Crossing a treacherous Khumbu Icefall crevasse on a bendy aluminum ladder?  No problem in VR.   Sleeping at Camp 4 in a tent that barely clings to the snowy slopes knowing you’ll have to wake at 10pm for your all-night summit bid?  Way more restful in VR.   When I stood at the top of Everest and looked out at the endless views in every direction, I was genuinely relieved I didn’t have to go back down.  So while I know I’ll never climb Everest, these videos made me feel like I actually did!  ‌‌

AirPano VR 360

Russia-based AirPano 360 makes short, 360° drone tours of awe-inspiring places around the world.  The videos are accompanied by robotic sounding voice-overs and subtitles, but the information provided gives you a good overview of what you’re seeing.  One of the most impressive videos was the Angel Falls experience that takes you from the bottom of the highest falls in the world in Venezuela (3000') all the way to the top of the plateau where the waters make their perilous dive off the cliffs. You can spin around to look either at the falls, or out at the incredible view of the valley below.  I don’t know how many times I exclaimed, “Wow,” as did the rest of my family when I made them watch this video.  Seeing as how a regular trip to Angel Falls requires a plane trip from Caracas, a day-long riverboat ride, and then a hike up to the falls, this VR experience might actually be better than the real thing!  ‌‌

Welcome to Earth! It's a planet having an iron core, with two-thirds of its surface covered by water.

Earth orbits a local star called the Sun, the light of which generates the food supply for all the millions of species of life on earth.

The dominant species on Earth is the human being, and you're one of the six billion of them! Humans have iron in their blood, and their bodies are composed of two-thirds water, just like the planet they live on.

The physical composition of the Earth, its people and everything on it contains an electro-magnetic field which is not yet fully understood.

Theories and legends about the origin of Earth, people and life itself abound, however they are not commonly discussed. The bulk of earth's people spend their time immersed in daily activities, leaving the big questions for later.

"Who are we? Where did we come from? Where are we going? How will we get there?"

Many religions and philosophies have attempted to answer these questions over the years, but so far none has given an answer that everyone on the planet can accept.

In contrast to all the disagreement, the similarities among people on earth are far, far greater than any differences.

Welcome again to Earth! Enjoy your stay, and try to stay calm.

Both travel enthusiasts and guides can embrace a new way to do tourism with 360 Stories platform! The kind of tourism that doesn’t need any physical contact. Virtual tourism has become a way for those under lockdown conditions to experience travel from the comfort of their own homes. And while Armchair tourism is not a new concept, it has gained popularity in recent months for obvious reasons. A remote travel experience is an awesome way to spend your time and can be a great distraction. It’s also a wonderful source of inspiration for when the borders do finally open up and travel restrictions get lifted!

Tour Guides Going Virtual

360 in travel

Many have jumped to support online experiences, giving access to collections in museums or visiting a zoo online. But there’s something missing. Live interaction. Also, there aren’t many ways out there to help those struggling to find work now that their main source of income has been cut off. That’s why we at 360 Stories tried to come up with a solution. Now our platform has a brand new feature and tour guides can connect with guests live and offer an interactive experience in 360 degrees! You can do what you love and start making an income again!

There is a huge selection of destinations to choose from. And creating a virtual tour is just a matter of a few simple clicks that only takes 5 minutes. There’s no new technology for you to get accustomed to, and you don’t need to be a tech expert to get started. The platform is intuitive and super easy to use. It’s like a combination of Google Street View and Google Hangouts, where you are able to navigate destinations in 360 degrees while video chatting live with your guests!

Advertise Your Experience

360 in travel

There are several websites now offering an opportunity for tour guides to provide would-be-travelers with an online travel experience as a way to earn an income. These include AirBnB Online Experience , Viator , Get Your Guide and more! As a tour guide, you can advertise your services on any or all of these platforms. Once your guests sign up, you can give them a unique link that will take them to your Live Guided Tour on the 360 Stories platform. Once there, you can walk them through your selected destinations and give them a tour live! Thanks to the power of the internet you can host people while earning some cash using an alternative approach to travel.

Create Your Tour

Once you sign up, you can create a Live Guided Tour and share the invite link with your customers. Creating a tour is really simple. Give your tour a name then start searching for places you want to include in your tour. Once you’ve added your destinations, schedule a date and time for your tour to begin. You can also set the duration of your tour. Finally, choose your time zone (don’t worry, everyone will be shown the time in their local time). As soon as you submit your tour, you will be able to copy the URL generated and share it with your guests. Only those with the link will be able to join your Live Tour.

If you want to make any adjustments, you can easily edit and duplicate your Live Tour, or remove it completely. You will then be able to join the tour as a presenter. When the tour begins, you will be able to navigate 360 photos and videos of your destinations while chatting with your visitors live. You’ll have total control of what your participants see on the screen. Participants also have access to different stories that can be shared by everyone. Have an interactive conversation with your participants. If we have learned anything from COVID-19, it is that we are able to adapt. Similar to the boom in other video call programs like Zoom, Google Meetings, Facebook Rooms and more, 360 Stories really lets you have an immersive experience with your guests, get personal, get connected and really tell your story. Like any tour, you can choose the format, be yourself and feel free to answer any questions they may have.

Staying One Step Ahead

360 in travel

With the disruption caused by Covid-19, it’s relieving to know that there are new ways for us to share our passions and knowledge with those who are unable to travel. Not only is it a great way to explore places and learn about different cultures, but this tool can help traveling in the future to evolve. For example, this tool can help tour guides get to know their guests before meeting them in person, helping them to establish a relationship with the participants of a real-life tour ahead of time.

It’s also a great way for travelers to get a general overview of their destination before they book their trip. Think of it as a trailer to the feature film that will be the actual offline tour, a highlight, a storyboard, a flash of inspiration for what is to come. Of course, the coronavirus made us sorely aware of the travel restrictions faced by those who have issues with health or finances for example. That’s why these kinds of online opportunities can prove their worth way beyond this period of lockdowns and travel bans.

It may be a long time before we will be able to enjoy travel again. Even then, travel may never be the same again with new regulations that we may be forced to follow. If anything, the travel industry should be ready to embrace what technology has to offer, so that they can give travelers what they want. We’re already working on ways to allow tour guides to use AR/VR technologies to be able to guide tourists from home as they visit different places in real-time with high-quality 360-degree content in VR and the latest AR technology in the mix with 5G delivery. On-demand discovery while in-destination is key to the future of travel. We at 360 Stories try our best to stay one step ahead of the future, presenting the most innovative solutions to even the most challenging problems.

Looking for a new travel camera? Get epic shots with a 360 action camera

Nov 24, 2020 • 5 min read

An invisible selfie stick can make any shot look epic

Using a 360-degree camera for your action footage can make for some epic travel videos © Courtesy Insta360

The right travel camera can make any trip look amazing, whether you’re just taking a weekend trip close to home or checking an international destination off your bucket list. That’s what a 360 camera can deliver.

Check out this video shot by video creator Kyler Holland of his road trip to Utah using the new Insta360 ONE X2 camera. From one-wheeling down mountainous roads to rafting, it’s loads of fun and all shot on a 360 camera.

A 360 camera might seem excessive if you’re not planning to share 360-degree content. But there are a lot of hidden benefits to a 360 action camera compared to a standard action camera or digital camera. Here’s why you should consider picking one up for your next trip.

Shoot first, point later

The best thing about a 360 camera is that you don’t have to point the camera when you’re shooting. Since the camera captures in 360 degrees all around you, everything is caught on camera—no matter what. You never have to worry about whether you caught a special moment of your travels on camera.

You don’t actually have to use a 360 camera to shoot 360-degree content. When you’re settling down at the end of the day, you can “reframe” the video to focus on whatever you want to show. Just swipe around the 360 footage on your phone until you find the best angle and export the video to fit any social media platform.

The Insta360 app makes reframing even easier with “Auto Frame”. This AI algorithm analyzes your footage for you and provides you with a collection of the best angles. Just pick the one you like best and you’re done.

360_camera_1_Reframing.jpg

The invisible selfie stick

The most fun part about a 360 camera is hands-down the Invisible Selfie Stick feature. Selfie sticks might get a bad rep, but an invisible one can make any shot look epic.

How does it work? Because a 360 camera has two lenses, the selfie stick falls in the blind spot between them, making the selfie stick appear invisible in your final footage. There aren’t any magic tricks to making it disappear—just shoot with it like you would any other selfie stick. The selfie stick will automatically appear invisible when you look at your footage later.

The result? Mind-blowing aerial and third-person perspectives that look like they were shot on a drone. For solo travelers, it’s like your own personal cameraman. Never worry about asking someone for a photo again.

360_camera_2_Selfie_Stick.jpg

Unreal stabilization

Most 360 cameras also have advanced electronic image stabilization to keep your videos super steady. 360 cameras often have even better stabilization than many action cameras, because the wider field of view provides more room to stabilize the footage without cropping or losing image quality.

Heading skiing or snowboarding? Just mount the camera to your helmet or on your backpack with the selfie stick. Taking a long bike ride or motorcycle ride? Mount it to your helmet or the handlebars. Even if you’re just walking or hiking, image stabilization will make your shots look super smooth. No extra gimbals or other equipment needed.

Not only do 360 cameras correct shaky camera movements, they also correct unwanted rotations as well. Even if you turn the camera completely upside down, the video will stay upright the whole time with a level horizon.

360_camera_3_Motorcycle.jpg

What to look for in a 360 travel camera

So how do you pick the best 360 camera? Here are a few things to look for when you’re shopping around.

Portability Like any kind of travel gear, portability is of the essence in a travel camera. Look for a 360 camera that you can hold comfortably in your hand and slip easily in your pocket, like the Insta360 ONE X2.

Durability Most 360 cameras have two circular lenses on either side of the camera body, which might give you some anxiety about keeping the camera safe while traveling. But these cameras can be tougher than they look.

Insta360 ONE X2 is waterproof to 10 meters, with no exterior case needed. Perfect for a day at the lake, rafting down the river, or even surfing at the beach. There are also lens protectors available to keep the lenses protected while you’re on the go, or a dive case for capturing underwater content. It also boosts a high-performance battery to keep you shooting all day long.

360_camera_4_Waterproof.jpg

The companion app

The last thing you might want to do after a long day of traveling is sift through all of your footage and edit it before you can share it. A clunky, frustrating editing workflow can really turn a great day into a bad one.

The Insta360 app is packed with AI editing features to make editing easier than ever. Want to just tap once and be done? Look no further than the app’s Shot Lab, which hosts a collection of one-tap templates using the latest and greatest editing techniques. All you need to do is import your footage and then Shot Lab turns it into something epic. And it’s continuously updated with new templates all the time to keep your edits fresh.

Dolly Zoom and Stop Motion templates make cinematic effects as easy as a tap. You can even clone your body with templates like Clone Trail. Or tired of people blocking your shot in crowded tourist traps? The Ghost Town template will take your 360 timelapse and remove the people from it, outputting an unobstructed photo.

It’s all super easy and makes editing super fast when you’re on the go. With a camera like Insta360 ONE X2 , you can let the camera do the work and you can just focus on having fun.

Benefits of being lightweight.

The Insta360 X3 is designed to be lightweight and portable , so you can take it with you wherever your travels take you. Its small size makes it easy to fit into a bag or pocket and its light weight ensures that it won’t add much extra bulk or weight to your gear.

This allows you to focus on your adventure without having to worry about carrying around a heavy camera or worrying about finding room to store it when not in use.

Plus, the lightweight design means there is less chance of fatigue or strain on your hands and arms shouldering the camera for long period of times.

It’s so easy to just put the cap on and throw in my travel backpack or even my jacket pocket or cargo pant pocket . You’ll see how small and easy to use it is in pictures and video below.

The Insta360 X3 features an intuitive 2.29-inch touchscreen display and simple controls, which make it really easy to use.

It can help you get the perfect shot without fussing with complicated settings or menus.

Plus, its Push and Go feature means you can easily start recording 360° video with just one button press.

Its even got a quick button on the side to change your video presets quickly.

I really like just being able to just press one button and then put selfie stick above my head and I’m good to go!

Here is an example of mine, when I was travelling, with both 360 videos and pictures.

Before we discuss the additional advantages of Insta360 X3, let’s take a look at some potential drawbacks.

– be sure to bring an extra battery to ensure you have enough power for long shoots.

– Ensure that your lenses are protected from scratches and damage by investing in lens guards, as the lenses of this camera stick out more than regular cameras.

– Keep in mind that this camera does not have the ability to zoom, which may be a disadvantage for some travel scenarios.

– In addition, low light shots with movement may not turn out great

– When reframing 360 shots to smaller area of the 360 picture, the photos are cropped so lose detail.

So for those types of photos that 360 cameras aren’t great for, I carry my Sony RX100 VII . ( zoom, low light, high detail cropped photos )

However, there is a better Insta360 RS 1 inch 360 edition which has a bigger Leica sensor which is much better with low light and detail, and that link is my article on that 360 camera.

The Insta360 X3 is an incredibly versatile 360 camera that can be submerged up to 10m (33ft) without the use of a case .

This makes it perfect for capturing underwater footage , as you don’t have to worry about putting on bulky cases or them getting in the way of the clear shot.

I have used this camera in a few water-related activities, such as dipping into the water or canoeing.

Take a look at my YouTube shorts video below to see how I use while tubing in Itchetucknee Springs and then dipping it under the water.

I wouldn’t risk taking it out for more extreme scenarios like jet skiing or motorboating or any fast movement of the device underwater.

The pressure generated from moving fast may be too much and cause water to leak in. In those cases, I would use the dive case.

You can also capture stunning underwater footage with the Insta360 X3 Dive Case .

With IPX8 water resistance, you can shoot as deep as 50 meters (164ft) and you can take those faster moving shots on or below the water also. The new version also gives clearer 360 shots without the case getting in the way.

Check out more details on my full article on Insta360 being waterproof and what that really means . And whether you should get a dive case.

The Insta360 X3 camera is the perfect choice for travelers who want to capture smooth, stabilized footage on their adventures.

With FlowState stabilization technology , the Insta360 X3 camera ensures that your videos will be free from shakes and jitters, even when you’re in motion.

And with Horizon lock it keeps the horizon level even as you wave your camera around, or dip and raise it for creative shots.

My walking and biking shots look very smooth without any editing or need of a gimbal, even with the camera above my head on a selfie stick (as you can see in the video).

360 cam + selfie stick = Drone alternative while traveling

The Insta360 X3 is a great alternative to using a drone for capturing aerial footage.

Check out my article on options for invisible selfie sticks , including the extended one that gives the best drone type shots.

With its Flowstate stabilization and AI touch-screen, you can easily mount it onto the top of a selfie stick and get beautiful 360° footage without having to worry about expensive drones or the complications of flying them. (Or places where drones are prohibited, such as all national parks or in cities!)

The extended selfie stick is great for these faux drone shots , and you can get a sense of this from my videos in this article, although I’m only using the regular length selfie stick in those.

The Insta360 X3 is a great choice for those who want to be able to casually wander while capturing their travels.

“Be in the moment” and enjoy your travels while the camera films everything around you so you dont have to set up and frame all your shots.

Check out my video above when I’m just wandering around and enjoying my travels while 360 cam above my head on the selfie stick. I don’t have to worry which way I’m facing camera.

The Insta360 X3 also features Flowstate stabilization so your videos look smooth and stable even when you’re walking or biking.

Plus, its waterproof design means you don’t have to worry about taking the camera outside in wet or dusty conditions – perfect for days spent exploring nature.

I frequently have it out in the rain , which I can’t do with a regular camera or even phone camera.

“Shoot then Point”

As you can see below, I don’t even have to be facing the clock or framing my shot to get a good video of the clock, since I edit the frame in post.

Filming with my 360 camera above my head on a selfie stick : Me casually walking away while filming Prague astronomical clock with my Insta360 X3 while travelling.

An action cam while travelling

This 360 action camera is a perfect choice for capturing action shots, with its 5.7K 360° video resolution and two super-wide lenses.

Its maximum waterproof depth of 33 feet allows you to take it into any environment – on the ski slopes, or by the beach, or to capture that summer road trip in stunning detail.

You can also take advantage of its 4K Single Lens mode and 60fps Me Mode to create cinematic shots that look as if they were taken by a professional camera operator.

Whether recording a car race, surfing session or bike ride , the Insta360 X3 is designed to help you get amazing results every time.

This video short is a great example of mine of the multiple benefits of the Insta360 X3 . Notice the multiple reframed directions that would have been impossible without a 360 camera and also went underwater!

With its AI-powered editing features and intuitive software, you can easily create stunning shots with minimal effort.

The Insta360 App provides several features to help make your video editing process even easier. Some examples:

  • Deep Track allows you to keep an object in the frame no matter how much it moves
  • Freeze Frame lets you pause a moment and capture it from any angle
  • Clone loops
  • Multiple reframe and keyframe options

No-Download Editing allows you to edit without downloading the footage first.

Additionally, its AI-powered Auto-edit feature makes it easy to create unique shots without any work.

In fact the tubing video I shot above was reframed by the Insta360 AI and then I added text and music within the app.

Take a look at my article reviewing the main Insta360 app buttons.

And this is my full reframing tutorial for Insta360 videos on the app.

Belvedere Palace Gardens in Vienna wide angle photo taken with Insta360 camera on an invisible selfie stick

Insta360 X3 for travel bloggers/vloggers

The Insta360 X3 is perfect for travel blogging, allowing you to capture stunning visuals from any direction and reframe them later .

With its AI-powered reframing feature, you can get multiple angles and perspectives without the need to perfectly frame while shooting.

Plus, it’s waterproof in the rain and up to 10m depth, and features Flowstate stabilization, so there’s no need to worry about shaking while biking or walking ruining your shot.

You won’t have to reshoot if something wasn’t quite right – simply edit it in the Insta360 app or desktop software and get beautiful results.

Plus, you can live stream your content directly from the camera or share it on social media platforms like YouTube and Instagram.

This article of mine also goes into why a 360 camera is better than a regular camera for travel.

And it’s the perfect camera for a solo traveler.

360 camera Accessories

The Insta360 X3 is the perfect camera for travel. With its range of accessories, you can capture all your adventures.

The most important accessories are the selfie sticks and mounts.

Check out my article on must have accessories for your 360 cam.

The 2-in-1 Invisible Selfie Stick + Tripod allows you to take amazing selfies with ease.

That is my favorite accessory and is the selfie stick I use the most while travelling because its small and “all in one”. My pic above is my X3 mounted on this.

And don’t forget about the X3 Sticky Lens Guards to keep your lenses clean and scratch-free!

One major advantage is the ability to capture the entire 360 VR space around you, creating a more immersive experience in both photos and video.

Then, you can experience immersive 360 videos on YouTube VR or with a VR headset.

Here is my YouTube channel with multiple 360 videos I have shot and I also insert higher quality 360 pictures in the videos as well.

Qualifying Clients With Confidence - Ep. 05

In this episode of 360º in :180, Christen Perry shares important principles of how to qualify a client with confidence. Joining her is Jennifer Kellum, the owner of Neverland and Main travel agency, who also shares her thoughts on this process.

Michael Gelber, CEO of World of Travel, steps in as the host and interviews both Christen and Jennifer. They discuss the role of a master matchmaker, which is to qualify the client effectively and match them with the perfect destination and resort.

Qualifying a client involves getting to know their needs, understanding their budget and dates, and learning where they find value. Jennifer emphasizes the importance of a pre-departure zoom or call to manage client expectations in a post-COVID world.

The discovery call is essential to learn the client’s budget, dates, and their preferred travel experience. Both Jennifer and Christen highlight the importance of clients filling out an intake form and taking out their calendars during the discovery call. Without this information, it’s like shooting in the dark.

The episode concludes with Michael emphasizing that knowledge is power, and the more knowledge you have, the better you can qualify clients and create an exceptional travel experience for them.

Insta360 X4 review – the best 360-degree camera just got better

Insta360 x4: two-minute review.

T he best handheld 360-degree camera just got better with the latest iteration, the Insta360 X4. It builds on the X3 , most notably bumping up the video resolution from 5.7K to 8K – and when we're talking about such a wide field of view from twin ultra-wide lenses, resolution matters.

8K video up to 30fps trickles down improved capabilities at lower resolutions, too, with 5.7K video up to 60fps and 4K video up to 100fps. The single-lens mode also gets a bump in frame rate, with 4K up to 60fps.

Video can be shot in a standard mode with choice of standard, vivid and flat color profiles, plus there's a HDR video option for increasing perceivable detail in bright highlights and dark shadows – something the X4's small 1/2-inch and high-resolution sensor otherwise struggles with.

With its improved capabilities, the X4 feels like a more versatile pocket camera. Like the X3 it offers neat video modes you don't get on the best camera phones , like a 360-degree field of view that enables a shoot-first reframe later way of shooting, and creative effects such as ‘bullet time’ and hyperlapse, but it now also feels like a highly capable action camera, vlogging tool, and – particularly for motorcyclists – dash cam.

Video modes are supported by superb image stabilization that smooths out the shakes in your action footage, plus 360-degree horizon lock, which levels your edited footage when the camera rolls with the action.

Insta360's clever ‘invisible’ selfie stick allows you to film everything around you from a third-person view, whether it's mounted to bike handlebars or in the hand, while the extra-long selfie stick can give you a drone-like perspective. This is also a fully waterproof camera up to 33ft / 10m, so most experiences are covered.

We still get the lovely 2.29-inch touchscreen and simple interface, while a beefier battery has been squeezed into a body that’s roughly the same size as before, albeit around 10% heavier, and gives a huge bump in battery life.

The most capable rivals, such as the GoPro Max , Kandao Qoocam 8K , and Ricoh Theta X , are either dated or pricier – or both – and until they’re replaced, the X4 is 2024's unrivaled 360-degree camera , and could be the one extra pocket camera in addition to your smartphone that you choose for getaways, gatherings, and events. It handles superbly, and captures the kind of video footage you simply can't yet shoot with a phone.

Insta360 X4: price and availability

  • Launched worldwide in April 2024
  • Costs $499/ £499 / AU$879

The Insta360 X4 is available worldwide now following its April 16 announcement, and costs $499.99 / £499.99 / AU$879.99 – that's roughly a 10% markup from 2022's X3. Given inflation and the new camera’s improved capabilities, that price increase seems fair, although the X3 has fallen in price since its release, and will likely drop in price further following the X4’s launch, and is a compelling cost-effective alternative.

There are a host of optional accessories in the Insta360 ecosystem, including various selfie sticks (one of which is designed to enable you to capture ‘bullet time’ effects), mounts, and an underwater housing. In the box you get the X4's new detachable lens protectors (replacement protectors are available separately), while you'll need a microSD memory card to store photos and videos. At the time of writing it's unclear if the X4 will be available in different kits – visit the Insta360 store to see all the accessories on offer.

Insta360 X4: design

  • Slightly bigger and heavier than the X3
  • Similar X3 design includes large touchscreen and 1/4-inch threaded port for a selfie stick
  • Waterproof up to 10M
  • New screw-on lens guards

The stick-like design of the Insta360 X4 is very similar to the X3, and that's a good thing, because the X3 is one of the most user-friendly 360-degree cameras available. Its grippy exterior is easy to hold, or you can attach one of Insta360's invisible selfie sticks using the threaded mount point on the bottom.

Twin bulbous ultra-wide lenses cover the entire 360-degree field of view – these are the part of the X4 that really needs protecting, and to that end the camera comes with ultra-light clear lens protectors that can be screwed on and off, whereas the X3 uses non-reusable sticky lens guards.

Build quality is superb: the camera is fully waterproof up to 33ft / 10m, with all ports rubber sealed (though I haven’t had the opportunity to test the waterproofing out properly, yet). You’ll know if the seals aren't fully locked, thereby compromising waterproofing, as the orange coloring inside the catch will be visible – a neat bit of design.

You get a USB-C port for connecting and charging the camera, plus a hefty 2,290mAh battery that can record for up to 135 minutes – that's a huge increase from the 81 minutes provided by the X3's 1,800mAh battery.

The X4 records onto microSD memory cards, and naturally, because of the waterproof design, the card slot is inside the camera's battery compartment rather than directly accessible outside, as is the case on the less-robust and action-averse DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

There's a slight increase in size from the X3, though it’s barely noticeable, plus a 10% increase in weight – the X4 weighs in at 7.16oz / 203g, and feels reassuringly solid for its diminutive size.

There are four direct physical controls around the camera: robust power and quick menu buttons on the side, plus shooting mode and record buttons under the generous 2.29-inch touchscreen. Most of the action happens through the responsive touchscreen.

By default the customizable options displayed on screen for quick access include the shooting mode and resolution settings, the lens, plus the lens perspective. At a push you can switch between viewing 360-degree footage from the front or rear lens (in the single-lens mode, this option selects the lens you're recording with).

The user interface is simple and quick to navigate, though a little keen to go idle – I've needed to reopen the menu many times to confirm video mode selections.

Physical controls are hard to access when the camera is out of reach on a selfie stick, and that's where voice and gesture controls come in. You can command the X4 to start and stop video recording – which proved super-handy when I had it mounted three meters above my head on the extra-large selfie stick, while a peace sign gesture will trigger the timer for taking photos. The mixture of audible and visual commands covers you in most scenarios, including underwater.

There's more to dig into by swiping the touchscreen. Flicking from right to left reveals exposure settings including color profile, while swiping left to right opens up your photo and video gallery for playback, and during playback you can swipe the screen to move around the 360-degree perspective.

Swiping down from the top of the screen opens up the main menu, through which you can activate and deactivate a number of controls such as gesture and voice commands, and connect to compatible Bluetooth-equipped devices such as headphones and remotes. You can also adjust the screen brightness here.

Explanatory on-screen text appears for most of the operational controls and shooting modes, which is super-handy when you’re getting started, especially for getting the most out of the shooting modes.

The X4 is designed to be used in vertical orientation, and as such your handling and viewing experience is largely in the 9:16 ratio. You can record in horizontal format using the single-lens mode, and there’s also a multi-aspect FreeMe mode where you can choose the aspect ratio, but overall the user experience is geared to content creators and mobile users familiar with the vertical format.

During recording, the X4 can get warm quickly, especially in the power-hungry high-resolution video modes. If you're using the X4 for shooting action, your movement will go some way to cooling the camera down, but if you're recording while largely stationary or in particularly warm environments, things can get moderately warm.

Overall, the X4 handles superbly for users of all experience levels and abilities.

Insta360 X4: features and performance

  • Huge 135-minutes of recording time
  • Especially capable image stabilization
  • Intuitive mobile editor
  • Decent range of shooting modes

Should I buy the Insta360 X4?

Buy it if..., don't buy it if..., insta360 x4: also consider.

If our Insta360 X4 review has inspired you to think about other options, here are two more cameras to consider…

How we tested the Insta360 X4

  • Sporadic use over a few weeks
  • Bike rides and vlogging in various lighting conditions
  • Bullet time, hyperlapse, and regular video recording using a variety of color profiles and resolutions

We had our hands on the Insta360 X4 for several weeks before its official launch. Sadly we've not used it for the kind of adrenaline-filled extreme sports that you see in the launch videos, although it's still had extensive real-world testing.

We've run it in 8K capture for long periods to test its power and stamina, used it for vlogging on the move, and for moderate sports such as road biking. We've tried out the various video resolutions, color profiles and HDR video capture to see how the small 8K sensor copes in bright and low light.

The various video modes have been played with too, including bullet time and hyperlapse, plus we've taken still photos in the various options.

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel of 2024

Taking your pup on a road trip can be a fun experience but only if you have one of the safest dog crates for car travel. Even if you’re not traveling cross-country, a crash-tested carrier is one of the most important purchases to keep them safe for long-haul car trips and even a quick jaunt to the vet.

We selected crates and carriers that are crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), a nonprofit that evaluates the safety of pet travel products. To aid in our selection, we also enlisted the guidance of a dog trainer who helped inform us about the importance of pet safety when traveling in a vehicle. Our list of the best dog crates for car travel has something to make every dog’s next road trip a success.

When traveling with your pet, keeping them safe in the car is the biggest priority. While there are plenty of travel crates on the market, the most effective are crash-tested and certified by CPS. This nonprofit evaluates the safety claims of pet travel products. Passing crash tests is no small feat, and only a handful of products receive the CPS’s seal of approval. One of those products is the Gunner G1 Kennel.

Available in four sizes – though the large size hasn’t been tested and certified by CPS – for puppies to large breeds, the Gunner G1 Kennel has a double-walled design to keep pets safe in an accident. Its double walls also have the added benefit of providing temperature regulation, keeping your pup cool even in hot weather. The crate has built-in pins for tie-down straps to secure the crate in a vehicle, although customers must purchase the straps separately.

Crash-test certification is an excellent feature and something pet parents should prioritize when searching for a travel crate. However, it does come at a cost. The Gunner G1 Kennel is on the higher end of travel crates and one of the most expensive options. Aside from its cost, some users take issue with the crate’s weight, which ranges from 27 pounds for the small kennel to 72 pounds for the large kennel. Sturdiness and durability are important in a travel crate, so we don’t necessarily consider this to be a con. However, a heavy crate can be an inconvenience.

Sleepypod Atom  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

More affordable option

Features top and side entries

Available in six colors

Not as much ventilation

Only suitable for pets up to 12 pounds

A budget dog crate for car travel is hard to come by, especially if you’re looking for a crash-tested and certified model, but the Sleepypod Atom is one of the safest options that doesn’t cost a few hundred dollars. This carrier features comfortable bedding for your pet to relax in, is suitable for the back seat of a car, and fits under the seats of most airplanes. The Atom also sports top and side entry points to make getting in and out a breeze for your pet. Plus, like all Sleepypod carriers, the Atom is available in various colors.

A downside of this crate is that it isn’t suitable for larger pets. With a weight limit of 12 pounds, only toy breeds can take advantage of this carrier. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great car restraint for larger pets with a smaller budget. Sleepypod also makes one of the best car seat belts to keep large dogs safe and comfortable in a vehicle.

Sleepypod Mini  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

Suitable for puppies and kittens up to 7 pounds

Doubles as a bed

Can fit under airplane seat

Available in nine colors

Some users had sizing issues

Zipper that connects cover to bed can be flimsy

The correct size of travel crate is essential for keeping your pet safe during transit, says Nicole Ellis, a professional dog trainer and pet lifestyle expert for rover.com. When traveling, a dog should touch three of the four walls of the crate or carrier to minimize the chance of movement during a collision. Getting a tiny crate that fits a puppy properly can be challenging, but the Sleepypod Mini is ideal for pint-sized pups with a weight capacity of 7 pounds. Beyond being crash-tested and certified by the CPS, this carrier can be used with cats and allows you to carry your furry friend with you on an airplane. (However, always check individual airline recommendations before flying with your pet.)

Regardless of how you’re traveling, this carrier will keep your pet cozy, comfortable, and safe. The included bed can be used as your pup’s primary sleeping place when not jet-setting around the world, which may help acclimate your puppy to being contained in a small carrier during travel times.

While the Sleepypod Mini suits most teacup pups, some users struggled to get the correct fit, as Sleepypod also makes the Mobile Pet Bed, a medium-sized equivalent of the Mini. We recommend measuring before purchasing to ensure you get the right fit for your four-legged friend.

Away The Pet Carrier  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

Compact but safe for smaller pups

Clip to secure your pet within carrier

Airline-approved

Removable bedding

Only suitable for pets up to 18 pounds

Not as soft as some soft-sided carriers

Small breeds can be easier to travel with because they don’t take up as much space, but the travel is only simple if you have the right gear. The Pet Carrier by luggage brand Away is the ideal soft-sided crate for transporting small dogs in a car. Its features include top and side entry points for your animal, removable bedding for comfort, a retractable mesh privacy screen, and a collar clip to keep your pup from springing out of the carrier when opened. It also has a firm bottom, which stops the carrier from folding during transit – a feature Ellis says is important to prevent your dog from sliding around in the crate.

Car travel is a breeze with this carrier: Just secure it to your vehicle’s back seat via a belt around the headrest. Traveling by air with your pet? This carrier can sit snugly on top of your luggage , securing to the handle of any Away suitcase via a trolley sleeve. (For travelers who do take their pups on planes, note that while the material is soft, some users found it wasn't flexible enough to fit under every airline seat.) The downside of this carrier is that it’s only suitable for small breeds weighing less than 18 pounds, so medium and large pets are out of luck.

Lucky Duck Lucky Kennel  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

Suitable for pets up to 110 pounds (large size)

Drainage holes for easy cleanup

Lightweight

Bed pad sold separately

Finding a dog crate for car travel that suits big breeds can be tough, but Lucky Duck makes one of our favorite kennels ideal for medium to large dogs. With a capacity to hold pups as big as 110 pounds, the large version of the Lucky Kennel can keep up with large dogs without weighing you down. Unlike most crash-tested travel crates, this kennel is lightweight at only 45 pounds, making it much more accessible to lift in and out of a vehicle. Another nice feature is its drainage and ventilation holes. The drainage holes are excellent to have in the event of a potty accident, as any liquid in the kennel is directed to the drainage holes via the slightly pitched floor of the crate .

The drain holes are a nice plus, but they make it difficult to place a bed within the crate. As such, Lucky Dog offers its own bed to fit inside – a nice-to-have feature to ensure your pup’s comfort during travel. However, if you want to purchase the bed pad for your dog, you’ll have to do so separately. Lucky Dog also requires the separate purchase of ratchet straps – a type of restraint that keeps the crate tied down to a vehicle – instead of providing them with the kennel. Remember this when purchasing this crate because Lucky Dog kennels are only crash-tested and certified by the CPS in combination with these tie-down straps.

Paravel Cabana Pet Carrier  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

Smaller footprint than most carriers

Folds flat for easy storage

Made from recycled materials

Only fits pets up to 20 pounds

Some users found shoulder strap held up poorly

The best dog carriers for small cars won’t take up too much space in the back seat of a vehicle, and the Paravel Cabana Pet Carrier fits the bill. At just 11 inches long, this soft-sided carrier can easily fit within the back seat of any small car. It’s also less than 1 foot high, easily letting you see over the top of the carrier. However, the small footprint won’t squeeze your pet.

The Cabana Pet Carrier is more than 20 inches wide, which makes it easily able to hold pups up to 20 pounds. Another handy space-saving element of this carrier is its ability to fold completely flat so that when your pet isn’t in the vehicle with you, the back seat can be reclaimed for passengers or cargo.

While this crash-tested and certified carrier is a safe, space-saving option for small cars, a few users found it wasn’t the best option as a shoulder bag, as the shoulder strap broke for some buyers.

Cabela's GunDog Intermediate Dog Kennel  »

Best Dog Crates for Car Travel

Tie-down strap kit and safety bar included

Nonslip rubber feet

Only one size

No included crate pad

When using a crash-tested crate in a large vehicle such as an SUV, it’s important to tie it down using straps or bolts to ensure the kennel doesn’t shift during transit. However, most crate manufacturers don’t include these tie-down straps with the purchase of a kennel, and these can often pack on an additional hundred dollars to an already expensive purchase. The Cabela’s GunDog Intermediate Dog Kennel is an excellent option for those who want the tie-down straps included to keep their pup safe in the back seat or trunk of an extra-large vehicle. The included tie-down strap kit can secure this crash-tested crate to most large cars, and the rubber feet offer additional nonslip reinforcement for more stability.

The kennel allows users to choose on which side they want the door to open – a handy feature to ensure ease of use. The downside of this crate is that it’s only available in one size, leaving few options for dogs between a medium and large size. It also comes as is, meaning no crate pad or bedding is included for your pup.

The Bottom Line

Choosing the best dog crate for car travel is a weighty decision, and you should always keep your pet’s safety top of mind. The good news is there are many excellent crates and carriers available that are crash-tested and certified, providing your pup with a safe and comfortable place during a road trip.

Our best overall pick is the Gunner G1 Kennel, which has some of the best features we’ve seen on a travel crate. Its double-walled design reinforces the kennel's safety while keeping your dog cool on hot days. It also has one of the most diverse size ranges available for crash-tested crates, making it suitable for small pups and large breeds alike.

Things To Consider When Buying Dog Crates for Car Travel

Safety Certifications: The best dog crates for car travel are crash-tested by the CPS. The pet industry has few regulations for travel products, and some brands may make unjustified safety claims. Even with products certified by the CPS, remember that certifications vary, and a product may not be approved for use with dogs weighing more than a certain amount or without additions such as tie-down straps.

Size and Weight Capacity: Choosing the correct size kennel is vital for keeping your dog safe during travel, whether traveling with your pet in a car or on a plane. There’s no one-size-fits-all crate, so remember to measure your pet and follow the measurement and weight guidelines provided by the manufacturer to achieve a good fit.

Ellis says that while we might have an instinct to buy a bigger crate to give our pups more space to lounge, it’s important to hold off on this impulse. “[O]ur dogs should be snug. So when thinking of a [crash-tested crate], our dog should really be touching three of the four walls [when they] lay down,” she says. Ellis also encourages pet parents to avoid extra space within a crate because that’s where the dog will move during a collision.

Material: Each dog kennel is constructed differently, but there are some materials to look for when considering dog crates for travel. Ellis likes soft-sided carriers with a firm bottom that ensures a pet stays stable during transport. She also says that ballistic nylon – a material that’s resistant to water and chew damage – is great.

Hard crates tend to be made of materials like rubber or rotomolded walls. Rotomolding is a type of plastic construction, and its benefits include being durable and thick enough to withstand excessive force, such as the type that would be exerted in a car accident.

While crash-tested crates vary in material, Ellis notes that one material pet parents should avoid is wire, specifically in wire-style crates. These crates are acceptable for at-home use but not for travel. Ellis says a wire crate may break into small pieces and impale your pet in the event of a collision.

Vehicle Compatibility: Most crash-tested crates suitable for car travel can be used in any vehicle. However, measure the back seat of your car to ensure that the crate will fit. Some crates intended for larger dogs may not fit in the back seat as easily as smaller soft-sided carriers. These crates may instead be used in the trunk of a vehicle, although they usually require tie-down straps to keep them in place. Ellis says it’s important to check your specific vehicle’s attachment points if you opt for a crate that requires latching in that way.

It’s also vital to remember that while a crate may sit in a vehicle's back seat, trunk, or bed, it should never be placed in the front seat. Ellis says regardless of what crate or carrier your pup is in, your dog can still be injured by an airbag if traveling in the front seat of a car.

How We Chose the Best Dog Dog Crates for Car Travel

At U.S News 360 Reviews, our editors and contributing writers evaluate products based on research, expert guidance, and our own experience as professional product reviewers. Our contributing writer consulted the CPS’s list of crash-tested and certified dog crates and carriers to find the best options for dogs big and small. We also consulted Nicole Ellis , a certified professional dog trainer and pet lifestyle expert with rover.com to understand how to keep pets safe during car travel.

WHY SHOULD YOU TRUST US?

Sophia Carlisle , the author of this piece, has covered pet products for Business Insider as a fellow and, prior to that, fostered dogs and cats for years. She has tested dozens of dog products with her rescue pit mix Lyla, including harnesses, food, and leashes. For U.S. News 360 Reviews, Sophia has covered some of the best products for pups, such as the best dog harnesses and slow feeder dog bowls .

The most important safety feature of a dog crate for car travel is that it’s crash-tested and certified by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS). Other safety features to watch for include crates and carriers with tie-down straps. Some crates for large dogs are only certified by the CPS with tie-down straps, which help to keep a large crate stable during transit.

Regardless of which CPS-certified crate you choose, Ellis, a certified professional dog trainer, says it’s always essential to restrain your pet in a vehicle. Even the most well-trained dog can cause a distraction, leap out of an open window, or become a projectile in the event of an accident, so keeping them secure during travel is necessary.

If a crate or carrier passes crash safety standards set by the Center for Pet Safety (CPS), it receives a rating between 1 Star and 5 Star. The very best dog crates for car travel receive a 5 Star safety rating.

If a brand or product claims to be certified by the CPS, check directly on the website to ensure it has passed crash testing. Some products have undergone crash testing but have failed or had their certification revoked. If a crate or carrier isn’t crash-test certified by the CPS, it’s unsafe to use with your pet for car travel.

Finding the correct size crate for your dog can be tricky, so take careful measurements of your pup and compare them with the weight and length measurements provided by the brand. Ellis, a pet lifestyle expert with rover.com, says that dogs should fit snugly inside their crates, so avoid opting for a larger size than your dog needs.

Compatibility with your vehicle is also important to consider when selecting the best travel crate for your pup. Ellis says it’s best to place the crate in the trunk or back seat of the car. Ensure you check whether or not the crate requires tie-down straps and if those straps can be attached to the latch points in your vehicle.
