CYNIC And ATHEIST Announce Spring/Summer 2023 'Focus And Presence' North American Tour

Progressive music icon CYNIC will embark on an extensive North American co-headlining tour with ATHEIST . The trek will launch on June 10 in Austin, Texas and will conclude on July 9 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Tickets will go on sale this Friday, April 28.

CYNIC will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of its debut album, "Focus" , by performing the seminal LP in its entirety while also paying homage to late members Sean Reinert and Sean Malone .

Later in the year, CYNIC will then perform at the illustrious ProgPower USA festival on September 6 in Atlanta, Georgia.

CYNIC 's touring lineup will feature Paul Masvidal on vocals and guitars, Max Phelps ( EXIST , DEATH TO ALL ) on additional guitars and vocals, Brandon Giffin ( THE FACELESS , THE ZENITH PASSAGE ) on bass, Matt Lynch ( NOVA COLLECTIVE , INTRONAUT ) on drums and percussion, and Zeke Kaplan on the keyboard. Lynch has been drumming with CYNIC since 2015 and appeared on the band's latest full-length, "Ascension Codes" , as well as the 2018 single "Humanoid" . Additionally, Phelps , having also appeared on "Ascension Codes" , and Giffin have previously toured with CYNIC during the band's "Carbon Based Anatomy" and "Kindly Bent To Free Us" tours.

Masvidal comments: "Come join us for a night of CYNIC / ATHEIST magic! We'll be celebrating our lifelong journey together with a night of progressive music and timeless memories. Don't miss it!"

ATHEIST 's Kelly Shaefer adds: "This has been something that Paul and I have been talking about in some capacity since we were in our early 20s. It's surreal to share a 30-year milestone together, and this tour will showcase for us a chance to play songs from our first three records as a special trilogy anniversary set, including songs not performed live in decades. Two titans of technical progressive metal coming together for a unicorn of a tour....one you will not want to miss!"

Released in 1993, "Focus" is a certified classic. Although that era ended with transformation into the short-lived PORTAL , and then a further splinter toward AEON SPOKE , CYNIC 's reunion-era has found them embraced in a way that proves how ahead of the times they were in the '90s. Through monuments such as the "Traced In Air" (2008) and "Kindly Bent To Free Us" (2014) albums, the "Carbon-Based Anatomy" and "Re-Traced" EPs, and a surprising rebirth with the "Humanoid" single of 2018, the CYNIC legacy remains untarnished.

The year 2020 will go down in history as a tremendously difficult time for the global human population. For the CYNIC family, the struggle was not restricted to a pandemic. It was two utterly senseless losses that threw the band's immediate concerns into the background: the premature deaths of drummer Sean Reinert in January, at age 48, and bassist Sean Malone in December, at age 50, were shocking and unthinkable.

Reinert , a founding CYNIC member since formation in 1988, was highly influential to a multitude of young drummers. His work on "Focus" and DEATH 's watershed 1991 album "Human" found him sculpting extreme technical metal with a jazz fusion-inspired approach. Now taken for granted, that approach to the instrument and the genre was undoubtedly pioneered in large part by Reinert . Though parting with CYNIC in 2015, his imprint on CYNIC is inescapable.

The death of Sean Malone dealt another horrible layer of tragedy to CYNIC 's 2020. In his many years with the band, Malone 's virtuoso playing meshed intuitively with Reinert 's. Together they formed a nucleus of kinetic, highly capable rhythmic dexterity that fueled CYNIC 's celestial aims.

ATHEIST was formed in 1988 by Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn . Followed by bands such as DEATH and CYNIC , they would define a sound that is a pillar of complex, progressive, jazz-infused death metal intensity, with supreme musical prowess — the genre celebrated and known today as "progressive technical death metal." ATHEIST attained that status thanks to its debut, "Piece Of Time" (1989),and the aforementioned "Unquestionable Presence" (1991),both regarded as important benchmarks of the genre.

Prog-metal heroes Cynic and tech-death vets Atheist have announced the “Focus and Presence” 2023 North American co-headlining tour.

The outing will see Cynic performing their seminal 1993 album Focus in its entirety as a tribute to late band members Sean Reinert and Sean Malone. Atheist will also be dipping into their classic ’90s material, playing a “trilogy anniversary set” culled from their first three albums: Piece of Time , Unquestionable Presence , and Elements .

Dates kick off June 10th in Austin and run through June 9th in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tickets go on sale Friday (April 28th) at noon ET and can be picked up via local venue sites or Ticketmaster (for select shows). Cynic are coming off the 2021 release of their fourth studio album Ascension Codes . With Masvidal as the only consistent member, the band’s current lineup features Max Phelps (Exist, Death to All) on additional guitars/vocals, bassist Brandon Giffin (The Faceless, The Zenith Passage), drummer Matt Lynch (Nova Collective, Intronaut), and Zeke Kaplan on keys.

Meanwhile, Atheist re-formed in the mid 2000s and released their fourth album Jupiter in 2010. It marked the group’s first LP in 17 years, and the pioneering death metal act has remained active in a live capacity ever since.

Earlier this year,  ATHEIST re-released their entire discography, comprised of 4 albums that span the band’s 30-year career, on all streaming services worldwide. The return to digital platforms was the first phase of a comprehensive re-issue campaign. The second phase offers their albums in various physical formats with all-new revised layouts. All four studio albums will be available on CD and vinyl on July 14th via Nuclear Blast . Cynic And Atheist Announce 30th Anniversary North American Co-Headlining Tour

Cynic and Atheist have announced the dates for their long-rumored North American co-headlining tour. That trek is set to commence in June and will find Cynic celebrating the 30th anniversary of their 1993 debut album “ Focus ” In addition to performing that album in full each night, Cynic also have plans to release a re-mixed and remastered version of that record on June 09th under the title to “ ReFocus “.

Atheist meanwhile will be celebrating their first three albums on that tour, 1990’s “ Piece Of Time “, 1991’s “ Unquestionable Presence ” and 1993’s “ Elements “. Vinyl and CD reissues of each of those albums, as well as 2010’s “ Jupiter “, will be out through Nuclear Blast on July 14th

Cynic vocalist/guitarist Paul Masvidal commented of this upcoming run:

“Come join us for a night of Cynic / Atheist magic! We’ll be celebrating our lifelong journey together with a night of progressive music and timeless memories. Don’t miss it!”

“This tour has been something that Paul and I have been talking about in some capacity since we were in our early 20s. It’s surreal to share a 30-year milestone together, and this tour will showcase for us a chance to play songs from our first 3 records as a special trilogy anniversary set, including songs not performed live in decades. Two titans of technical progressive metal coming together for a unicorn of a tour….one you will not want to miss! I’m also excited to announce that joining me on this tour and beyond will be an all-new lineup of Atheist ! These four straight killers of musicians will be alongside me as Atheist heads out with Cynic to celebrate 30 years of our first three albums Piece of Time , Unquestionable Presence . and turning 30 this year 1993’s Elements ! We’ll be playing tracks from those three albums exclusively in one of the longest sets we’ve ever done! The set will include several songs that have not been played live in three decades. Cynic has never disappointed me with their live show. Great performance and every song in the set was killer, with old favorites and new releases healthily mixed. Paul even broke out the acoustic guitar for a remixed version of "Integral." Even though Sean was ill and wanting to puke his brains out the whole time, he still nailed all the bass parts.

Even with venue switching drama and seeing the band play in a VERY small sideroom, it was a great time. Paul said he liked the intimacy and it made for a fun performance.

CYNIC And ATHEIST Announce 2023 ‘Focus And Presence’ North American Tour Dates

Progressive music icon CYNIC will embark on an extensive North American co-headlining tour with ATHEIST. The trek will launch on June 10 in Austin, Texas and will conclude on July 9 in Greensboro, North Carolina

Tickets will go on sale this Friday, April 28.

CYNIC will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of its debut album, “ Focus “, by performing the seminal LP in its entirety while also paying homage to late members Sean Reinert and Sean Malone .

Later in the year, CYNIC will then perform at the illustrious ProgPower USA festival on September 6 in Atlanta, Georgia.

CYNIC ‘s touring lineup will feature Paul Masvidal on vocals and guitars, Max Phelps ( EXIST, DEATH TO ALL ) on additional guitars and vocals, Brandon Giffin ( THE FACELESS, THE ZENITH PASSAGE ) on bass, Matt Lynch (NOVA COLLECTIVE, INTRONAUT ) on drums and percussion, and Zeke Kaplan on the keyboard. Lynch has been drumming with CYNIC since 2015 and appeared on the band’s latest full-length, “ Ascension Codes “, as well as the 2018 single “ Humanoid “. Additionally, Phelps, having also appeared on “ Ascension Codes “, and Giffin have previously toured with CYNIC during the band’s “ Carbon Based Anatomy ” and “ Kindly Bent To Free Us ” tours.

Progressive death metal legends, Atheist, are proud to announce they are heading on tour this summer with co-headliners Cynic on the "Focus And Presence Tour 2023".

The North American trek, presented by Pull The Plug Patches, will feature the special 30th anniversary sets celebrating 30 years of Cynic's Focus and Atheist's Piece Of Time, Unquestionable Presence, and Elements releases. The tour will kick off in Austin on June 10 and will make stops in Seattle, Toronto, and Boston before concluding in Greensboro on July 9.

Progressive metal legends Cynic have announced an extensive North American co-headlining tour with Atheist. The trek starts on June 10 in Austin, TX, and concludes on July 9 in Greensboro, NC. The tour will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Cynic’s iconic album, Focus , with the band performing the album in its entirety and paying tribute to late members Sean Reinert and Sean Malone. Tickets will go on sale this Friday (28th).

Progressive music icon CYNIC will be embarking on a Latin American headlining tour with support from tech death label-mate BEYOND CREATION. The journey will kick off on April 14 in Sao Paulo, BR and will then trek through 10 cities, concluding on April 27 in Mexico City, MX. The full run of dates can be found below while venues will be revealed at a later date.

CYNIC be celebrating the 30th anniversary of ‘Focus’ by performing the seminal album in its entirety while also paying homage to late members Sean Reinert and Sean Malone. More anniversary and memorial tribute shows will be announced in the near future!

This announcement comes after CYNIC’s momentous return to the live stage for the first time in eight years! The band performed a sold-out secret show in Los Angeles, CA before embarking on the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise in Januar 2023!  Later in the year, CYNIC will then perform at the illustrious ProgPower USA festival on September 6 in Atlanta, GA!

The new live lineup will feature Paul Masvidal on vocals and guitars, Max Phelps (Exist, Death to All) on additional guitars and vocals, Brandon Giffin (The Faceless, The Zenith Passage) on bass, Matt Lynch (Nova Collective, Intronaut) on drums & percussion, and Zeke Kaplan on the keyboard! Lynch has been drumming with CYNIC since 2015 & appeared on the band’s latest full-length, ‘Ascension Codes,’ as well as the 2018 single “Humanoid.” Additionally, Phelps, having also appeared on ‘Ascension Codes,’ and Giffin have previously toured with CYNIC during the band’s ‘Carbon Based Anatomy’ and ‘Kindly Bent to Free Us’ tours.
