About Chambal Safari Lodge

Set just an hour outside Agra, Chambal Safari Lodge is a peaceful woodland getaway, built and managed by passionate conservationist and naturalist, Ram Pratap Singh. A descendent of the Singh family, who own much of the surrounding farmland, Singh restored the neglected house in 1999 allowing visitors to explore his ancestral home, and it's a paradise for wildlife and bird lovers. There are 35 acres of land to explore and the guides are knowledgeable and incredibly warm and generous. A lovely change from the hotels in Agra, it's also close enough to combine a visit to Taj Mahal too.

What you'll love

The Singhs consider themselves real foodies, and the daily buffet banquets, always created using organic, locally-grown produce, are lip-smackingly good.

Insiders tip

Take an out-of-the-ordinary safari by camel. Explore the Chambal Ravines on these hump-backed creatures, spotting local wildlife and ambling past ancient archeological sites.

Something to think about

The lodge is an hour outside of Agra so although the Taj is within easy reach, it's not the place to stay for sunrise visits.

The property

Set within bright green forest and working farmland, the lodge resides on 35 acres of the old family plantation. Far removed from the hustle and bustle of the town, this is a place for relaxation and connecting with nature. The main building, Mela Kothi, is home to the dining room and a bar, and there are plenty of seating areas dotted around the grounds. Expect to sample an abundance of local cuisine daily and spend evenings huddled around the bonfire, gazing up at the night sky.

You'll sleep either in a room in the main house or in one of the many cottages around the grounds. Both come in varying sizes and offer a taste of local design and hospitality. There are 13 spots to stay in total, and some offer access to the welcoming library or open out onto a pebbled courtyard or farmland, whilst others come complete with lovely private gardens or verandahs.

The lodge runs regular safaris, both on the Chambal River (they are the only lodge in the area allowed to do so) and in the National Chambal Sanctuary, 22 kilometres away. On the water, you'll spot turtles, gharials, muggers and, if you're lucky, the Ganges river dolphin. Trips out by jeep should bring spottings of sarus cranes, along with other breeds of wetland birds and buckback deer. The ancient town of Bateshwar is also fun to explore, or you could stay put and spot jungle cats, hares and fruit bats in the gardens.

  • V5637CDdales 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles india - trip a deal 8 days Well worth it Trip a deal India,-8 days we missed our flight due to our misreading flight time. the company got in touch with us and we were able to rebook costing us extra for the return flight. We were met at the airport and taken to our hotel where we joined the tour group the next morning. Sunni our tour guide was exceptional, friendly, flexible and very professional. He made sure everyone was looked after and changed things around to suit the group and the crowds. We missed the first day but joined group to Jaipur on the bus. The traffic in India is horrendous but our bus driver was excellent and always drove safely. The hotels - we up graded and they were clean. Two out of the three hotels were enjoyable and clean. The trip is very busy, it is go,go , go but you get to see a lot of different things. Sunni the guide was very knowledgeable and shared lots of interesting and funny stories. He was the best. Would highly recommend. We visited Delhi, Jaipur and Agra. Trip a deal was very well organised. Read more Written 21 February 2024

Very crowded but loved it early morning h visit to the adi yogi , linga Bhairavi, and dhayanalingam. We were not told that the rooms will not have bath towels. Walking bare foot and long walks can be an issue for some . Also the ox being used for rides is cruelty which should be stopped . One bull was badly hurt on his neck and running against the pole. Had to tell the staff there to look at that bull and provide him some treatment . It could be from the Ali g that they put in their neck to pull the cart . That sling is of leather kind material rather than cotton / cloth so guess that can leads to hurting b their necks Read more Written 10 February 2024
  • A2052FRstuartc 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Be aware… We booked well in advance - and so you should as it is packed and many are turned away at the door. And the door only opens at 19:00 so you will wait with many others until they are ready for you. The food is undoubtedly delicious but do beware. The menu is certainly expensive for this part of the world but be prepared for bill inflation with 9% tax, another 9% tax and on top of that 25% VAT. To be fair the menu does state in small print exclusive of taxes at the bottom of the menu but the price you see is certainly not the price you pay.And that’s before you add in service! Is it worth it? For you to judge but if you need the washroom be prepared for a long long wait for just one cubicle. All a bit unexpected in such a luxury and exclusive environment. So be aware… Read more Written 8 February 2024
  • 512preeyac 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent What a treat! To be lifted high over the mountains in Jaipur in the early morning to see the sunrise! We were picked up from the hotel (promptly) and taken to the airfield and offered a well received coffee and biscuits before jumping in the balloon. The staff on the ground were very friendly - and payment via international credit card was straightforward. The pilot was a very humorous experienced expert, who gave us a safety briefing and smooth ride. It was really interesting to see the balloon setup and put down and the staff encouraged us to observe this and take pics. The views were spectacular and the overall experience was fabulous. I understand that a direct flight over the Jal Mahal and Pink City are not permitted, but this flight showed us the more rural areas over the mountains, and village life. Absolutely brilliant experience and service. Thank you! Read more Written 6 February 2024

Chambal Safari

  • Agra, Varanasi and Northern India

In a Nutshell

Chambal Safari Lodge is a small eco-lodge located close to Agra offering a blend of wildlife and cultural experiences in this untouched corner of India.

At a Glance

  • Lovely wildlife lodge close to the Chambal and Yumuna Rivers
  • Close to the superb Bateshwar Temples on the Yamuna
  • You can easily see Agra and the Taj Mahal on the way to Chambal and spend your time away from the city at night
  • Links up well with journeys onto Ranthambore, Ramathra Fort and Gwalior

chambal safari agra

Chambal’s main advantage is that you can stay here, seeing Agra and the Taj Mahal on the way and then continue to Ranthambore or Rajasthan after your stay. Chambal is run by the owners, Ram Pratap Singh and his wife Anu and there is a lovely atmosphere about the place. There is a checklist of 198 bird species, reptiles and mammals within the six acres of grounds, and you can head off on guided jeep, river, camal and natural walks in the local area. If you like more cultural pursuits, then a visit to the Bateshwar Temples on the Yamuna River is a must, alongside visit to traditional rural villages.

There are just 12 rooms here, ten of which are simply styled cottages set within the grounds with two larger bedrooms in the main lodge (Mela Kothi). The cottages have verandas looking out on the woodland, and the bedrooms have both front and rear facing verandas. Don’t expect a great deal; there are no TVs for instance.

Meals are served in a traditional buffet style, and a real highlight in the evening bonfire where guests meet to share stories about their day’s adventures.

Chambal River Safari

Most travelers visiting Agra go to the Taj Mahal and head back not knowing that there is so much more to do in and around this city than just that. On your next trip to Agra, consider going on a river safari on the Chambal River with Kunal Jain. This experience is an hour drive from the City of the Taj. The meeting point for this tour is a major landmark in Agra. From Agra, Kunal will accompany you as your naturalist and we will drive to the river safari point. You should have transportation arranged or he can book a taxi for you to take you here. The entire experience takes about 5-6 hours including the drive time to the river from Agra.

Apart from the river safari, Kunal also takes his guests to un-touristy attractions in and around Agra. Click here if you would like to know more about the attractions he covers. These include ancient temples and ruins, lesser known monuments, havelis lost in the deep impenetrable ravines of the Chambal and Yamuna and birdwatching in lesser known wetlands around Agra.

The National Chambal Sanctuary (400+ KM of protected waters) falls inside the Chambal river which flows through the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh before it merges in to the Yamuna. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1978. Today, it is one of the last remaining strongholds of the critically endangered gharial, red-crowned roofed turtle and the Gangetic river dolphin.

Chambal River Safari – 2

The Chambal River Safari with Kunal as your naturalist is not your average safari. Kunal takes you on a rare and once in a lifetime safari on one of India’s most ‘alive’ river eco-systems. During the safari you get to see critically endangered Gharials, Indian Marsh crocodiles, eight species of turtles including the critically endangered Red-crowned Roofed turtle and several resident and migratory birds including the Indian Skimmer and Black-belled Tern. Mammals (although not frequent) spotted during the river safari include the Striped Hyena, Jackal, Jungle Cat, Desert Fox and the Gangetic River Dolphin.

Historically the Chambal river is mentioned in Hindu mythology and often as the ‘cursed’ river. For instance, the Chambal is mentioned in the Mahabharat from the in-famous scene when Draupadi was disrobed by the Kaurava brothers after having been lost by her husbands over a game of dice. While she was being disrobed she cursed the Chambal’s inhabitants that they would always live a life of revenge for not coming to her rescue.

Another story from Mahabharat mentions a King called Rantideva who was advised that in order to please the gods and bring prosperity to his kingdom, he must sacrifice a thousand cattle. So he did and the blood from the slaughtered cattle is what apparently formed the Chambal river. As the river was tainted with the blood and hide of cattle for years to come it became known as – Chamravati or the river of hides.

In the 19th century, the river and it’s surrounding ravines became famous for freedom fighters many of whom fought against the British Raj, especially during the First war of Independence in 1857 (also known as the Mutiny). Later on, the Chambal valley became infamous across the country for it’s notorious gangs of bandits – many of whom robbed the rich and gave to the poor. In those days many villagers (both men and women) became baaghis (bandits or dacoits) as they suffered in-justice due to the rampant disparities in the social structure and biased law and order system.

Chambal River Safari with your naturalist – Kunal Jain

Thanks to the in-hospitable terrain, cursed by gods, the bandits and ‘blood-thirty’ crocodiles, the Chambal river remained largely un-polluted and no major cities or industries other than Kota (Rajasthan) were established along it’s banks for many years. Today, there are four damns up-stream on the Chambal which have caused a devastating affect on the survival of many species such as the Gharial, Gangetic river dolphin, some turtle species, Indian Skimmer and the Black-bellied Tern.

If you want to do the Chambal River Safari on your next visit to Agra, please get in touch with us. We will accompany you as your naturalist and will give you an informative tour of the region’s history as well as the wildlife. We will meet you at a mutually agreed landmark in Agra and together drive to the river bank. There is no public transportation to the river so you need to organize your own transportation. We can also organize a taxi from one of our locally known transportation vendors.

The river safari is ideally done in the winter months (October/November to mid-April) but can also be done till June for those who don’t mind the heat. While some of the boats have canopies that provide much needed shade, it is still hot (in the 40s) so please consider this before booking a safari in the months of April, May and June. From April onwards many winter migrants such as Pochards, Bar-headed geese, Ruddy shelducks etc. fly back to Europe and Central Asia. However, as the water level reduces in the river, sightings of resident species both on land and in water becomes really good. It is also in the summer months that mammals from the ravines come to the river for a drink, if you’re lucky you may get to see striped hyena and a resident pair of desert foxes sometimes even with pups.

From July to September, the Sanctuary is closed for safaris due to the monsoons. The river safari with Kunal as your naturalist is conducted on two different sides both within an hour driving distance from Agra. As such, Agra should be your base where you can stay in one of several hotels or home-stays fitting your budget. This way you can do not just the safari with us but also visit the Taj Mahal and other monuments or go for shopping in Agra.

chambal-river-safari-bonellis-eagle-birding-tour-travelwith

chambal-river-safari-jungle-cat-mustard-fields-travelwith

The two points on the Chambal where Kunal can take you on the river safari are Dholpur (Rajasthan) which demarcates the boundaries of two states – Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The second point where we go on the river safari is in Uttar Pradesh where again the river demarcates the boundaries between the states of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. The Chambal merges in to the Yamuna river at Bhareh after flowing downstream for another some 100 KM from where we do the safari.

In the winter months we recommend that you plan to spend a night in Agra rather than planning a day trip as there is fog on the highway and also on the river. When there is fog on the river our visibility will be close to zero and we won’t spot the wildlife. In the peak of winter the highway to both the river points can get dangerous to drive on at dark. There are several stray cattle that sleep on the roads or cross without any warning and with poor visibility due to smog, accidents are frequent. Other things to keep in mind as you plan your visit to the Chambal river is that there are bare minimum tourist facilities in these remote areas. Toilets are a hole dug up in the sand with a plastic canvas as cover. There are no hygienic restaurants or cafes either, you have to bring your own food and water from Agra. We hope that what you see on the river will make you forget about all the pains it took you to get to the Chambal.

Please Note:

• There is no guarantee that you will see the above wildlife. The river is their habitat and sightings depend on water level in the river, human interference, climatic conditions, weather and other factors, most of which are beyond your and my control. We will do our best to show you all there is to see. • How to get there: car is the fastest and most efficient. • Price of river safari: depends on number of people, number of hours, which side of the river. • Safety: All motor boats are monitored and checked to be in working condition. All safaris include a boatman and a naturalist. Guests have to wear life jackets at all times when on the boat. • What to carry: photo identification, camera, binoculars, warm jacket in winter, small backpack, sun glasses, cap, sun block, cash for tips, food/snacks and drinking water. • This experience is in the wild and rural India, please do not expect ‘luxury’ tourist facilities here. Sometimes, road conditions are bad or there are traffic jams, sometimes the boat engine gives up on us, therefore we would appreciate it if you can remain calm and patient when such un-planned circumstances pop up. • Smoking and drinking alcohol is strictly not permitted on the boats and on the river bank. • Most of the times there are no trash cans at the river safari points. Sometimes they’re there but waste is not disposed off properly. So, please take your trash (including empty plastic bottles) back with you to your cities. • To prevent any disturbance to the wildlife, we discourage the use of call playback to attract birds, feeding or baiting of wildlife and always maintain a safe distance between them and our boat.

Wander With Jo

Chambal River Safari, Agra – Excellent weekend Getaway from Delhi/ NCR

As I was whisked away in an unmarked van at the break of dawn from my house in Gurgaon, I had little idea I was being taken to the crocodile-infested waters of Chambal river in a rickety boat.

A little bit of a backstory on how Chambal river safari happened for me.

It was my birthday and my family & friends decided to book a short surprise getaway. As an avid traveler, I was pretty sure I must’ve covered all popular staycation spots ex-Delhi . My calculating brain told me since we had kids and seniors on board, we wouldn’t be going too far.

My initial guesses were our usual road trip wildlife hot spots ex – Delhi – Sariska , Corbett or Ranthambore but I was in for a surprise when I was told it would be a “brand new experience” for me.

Giddy with excitement but unsure of their planning capabilities, I tried to keep my expectations low as we drove off in a chauffer-driven van on the express way.

When we arrived in Agra and I saw the signboards, I was kind of disappointed. All this fuss was for… the Taj Mahal ? I mean obviously the Taj is “fuss worthy” but not for a wildlife loving globetrotter – right? My close circle knew me better than that (or did they?).

As doubt crept in, I could clearly imagine a failed birthday trip in a fancy hotel where we would pretty much just sleep and eat (my worse kind of vacations, sadly).

Lo behold – Our van pulls into a resort which I have never even heard of before-  Mela Kothi – Chambal Safari Lodge .

mela kothi chambal

Where ARE we? I asked my gang eagerly.

Apparently, we were at the Agra’s side of Chambal river which is famous for birding by river safari and other adventure activities, if you so please.

The lodge itself was beautiful and I was overjoyed by the element of surprise and the fact that we stood a chance to see the rare bird Indian skimmer , which is said to be mostly confined to the banks of Chambal river.

Next we were ushered to our cute cozy rooms which had even bigger sit outs overlooking lush greens.

rooms at Mela Kothi

We could spot Sambhar deer right from the comfort of our cottage’s sit out.

sambhar deer chambal

What’s more, Mela Kothi has a bunch of trees that are constantly flocked by hundreds of Indian flying fox (Aka greater Indian fruit bat) which can be both interesting as well as intimidating (considering their numbers and huge size).

Indian flying fox chambal

What a sight for sore eyes! I was totally in love with Mela Kothi already.

When I tried their scrumptious cuisine, went for the night walk (spotted civet cats) and found their cozy library – I was even more thrilled at the prospect of spending few days here. Suddenly the birthday trip was looking pretty damn good.

What to Expect at the Chambal River Safari

chambal safari agra

Once at the top of the banks of the river, you need to hike down to the banks for around 10 mins. It can be a steep hike down and not recommended for senior citizens. My mom braved a bike ride (from a local villager) down the steep dunes to accompany us on this epic adventure of an early morning birthday boat safari.

Chambal River Safari – Bird list

Once we were on our cute flat bottomed fiber plastic boat, we could spot birds and crocodiles all around.

Gharial soaking the sun

It was a mecca of thriving diversity in front of our eyes. We were even lucky enough to spot a couple of Gangetic river dolphins spinning and jumping gleefully.

Chambal river also boasts of different kinds of tortoises.

Our morning river safari at the Chambal River Sanctuary was from 9am – 1130 am . The birds we spotted within this span of 2.5 hours were –

All these were spotted from our boat on either banks of the Chambal river about 5 km upstream from the boarding point at the base of the bridge under construction.
