Aphex Twin is one of the legends in the electronic dance music scene, being constantly regarded as one of the best artists in his genre and influencing countless acts over the years.

His live show is one of the best performances you'll ever see out of a DJ. He's a master at mixing and flawlessly transitions from one song to the next bringing his own brand of ambient electronic to the forefront and never lets a dull moment enter into his set. You'll either feel the need to dance to your hearts content or you'll just zone out to the mesmerizing beats that you'll hear all night. The light show he brings with him is ridiculous and will make even the most sober person in the room feel like their tripping on the most potent psychedelics.

You'll be transported to a world of wonderment and amazement with only the music as a guide. Crowd interaction with him is very limited but at the same time his live show doesn't suffer at all from it in fact I think more crowd interaction with bring it down.

Aphex Twin lets his music do the talking for him and that's all you really need.

Thank you for the music. You have no idea how much I’m gonna be listening to this set from now on. It was incredible. I fell in love with your Field Day set but this one was just so exquisite. I did not think it could be better than Field Day, which still was more agressive and bombing, but this was just so entrancing and groovy. Literally the best show I've ever seen, his BK set was better than the Houston set from Day for Night...never thought that would be possible.

Exceeded expectations and frankly he rocked everyone in there.

Fantastic, mind-blowing show! The best gig I have seen for many years. I had a blast, after AFX the crowd was pretty awesome too. Man and all the musicians did present amazing work!

The most expensive DJ set I have ever heard. The venue was a shambles. All this for €69.50. I think Richard had a good old laugh at the Berlin punters.

Aphex Twin’s return to Europe’s clubbing capital reframes the history of electronic music

Funkhaus, Berlin, 1 November 2018

It’s been 15 years since Richard D James aka Aphex Twin ’s last appearance on German soil, and in the lead up to his oddly contentious comeback show at the almost equally historic Funkhaus venue, fans online are trying to dig up party flyers of AFX raves gone by. “Nope, two mentions, in all of German history, that’s all I can find,” captions one user, alongside scans of two tattered old posters. The chat runs concurrently to scores of people offloading last minute tickets – when the show was announced back in May, it was a billed as a concert, presumed to be in Funkhaus’ grand Socialist era performance hall. Two days before the event, a timetable reveals – confusingly – Aphex Twin won’t be appearing until the ‘afterparty’, which kicks off at 11pm, in the large warehouse space next to the concert hall, leaving a lot of poor Berlin artists grumbling they’ve paid 70 euros for a ticket to a club night. 

Expectation mismanagement aside, the event unfolds as a warped history lesson that speaks both to Aphex Twin’s own long legacy as an electronic pioneer since at time before the Berlin wall had even fallen, and the German capital’s own evolving relationship with history and itself.

Built in the 1950s in the former East Berlin under the repressive, tightly monitored eye of Socialist East Germany, Funkhaus was originally built collaboratively by architects and acousticians as a broadcast centre, to capture sound and music in such a scientifically refined manner that every syllable uttered or violin string played could be played back to the world as elevated proof of the Communist cultural-technical triumph. What the bureaucrats of then would make of its reinvention tonight as a laser-festooned, holy church of IDM is question you had time to contemplate during the slightly slow and awkward start to the show. For the first half an hour it’s unclear whether we’re being treated to music from Richard D James’ ambient-minimal catalogue, or whether the show has actually begun, as the visual jitter and the bleeps and bloops could be mistaken for equipment testing. But once he drops the unmistakeable kick of ‘Bicep’s Orca’, and the lasers come on, the atmosphere rapidly changes.

For the next hour we cycle through the styles and eras the Aphex has been at the heart of or has been an influence for. Crushing techno, iron fist acid rave and juddering jungle breaks orbit through the room alongside dips in and out of his own deep, experimental archive. Classics like Royal House’s ‘Dirty Beats’ muscle up against a remix of AFX protegé Lanark Artefax’s ‘Touch Absence’. The only recognisable Aphex Twin song proper is a slowed down play through of ‘Vordhosbn’, from 2001’s ‘Drukqs’, which is received as a rapturous high point of the set. As is apparently customary at every underground electronic music show, whether you’re Aphex Twin or a relative newcomer looking to state your intent, the final 10 minutes or so of the performance is handed over to obliteratingly loud feedback and strobe – a ritual hazing that a lot of people seem to love, even though the honest part of your brain thinks “ok, fine, i get it, but you could be using these minutes to play ‘Windowlicker’.”

Visuals on the night are, as usual, provided by long time collaborator Weirdcore, whose audience facial mapping tricks have been a staple of Aphex Twin shows for a decade now, but this is the first time for Germany to experience them close up. One thing that gets spoken about less is Aphex Twin’s contribution to the rise of the high concept ‘Live A/V’ performance – ever present at electronic events around the world today – so even though none of the tricks on display tonight are new, it’s an apt reminder of where the trend started. Next year is Aphex’s record label Warp’s 30 anniversary, and it’s rumoured has it they are going to be unveiling a new immersive show to celebrate it, with the possibility of the man himself at the helm.

Finally, for Berlin itself, the show is something of a watershed in its evolution as Europe’s party capital. The venue experiments with a cashless system that requires everyone to purchase pre-paid cards or upload their credit card details in advance. Rather than an innovation in efficiency, it seems to offer zero real benefit but acts as a neat psychological trick to increase spending across the night. Judging by the grumbling in the crowd, it’s the clearest sign of of where Berlin is at – from the 90s heyday of free-for-all underground club culture to an automated, gradually sterilised and consumption led music entertainment market. It doesn’t make 90 minutes of glorious Aphex Twin music in itself any less an enjoyable experience, maybe just a more expensive, and slightly less surprising one.

Watch 360° footage of Aphex Twin’s mind-bending Field Day set

The elusive producer performed at the london festival earlier this month..

Aphex Twin 's headline set at London festival Field Day on August 19 was an all-out assault on the senses, with Richard D. James playing an uncomprimising 90 minute set of experimental electronica set to a series of trippy and playful images. Pro footage of the entire show, filmed in 360°, was shared by NTS over the weekend and can be seen below. (warning: the video may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy).

The singular imagery accompanying Aphex Twin's live show (including a stand-out moment where James' face is merged with artists including Dua Lipa , Central Cee , and SOPHIE among others) were created by visual artist Weirdcore.

Last month Aphex Twin shared his latest EP, Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760 . The EP was accompanied by the augmented reality app YXBoZXh0d2lu that allows users to access 3D imagery and video linked to the music. The augmented reality experiences are triggered by pointing a phone camera at the packaging for the release.

Aphex Twin has headlined nine festivals around Europe over the summer, with Weirdcore providing visuals at each show. He is due to perform at Kalorama Festival in Lisbon, Portugal and U.K. event Forwards on September 1 and 3 respectively.

This year’s Field Day also included performances from Arca, Fever Ray, Jon Hopkins, Jayda G, Kelela, Moderat, Sbtrkt, Sudan Archives, Actress, Desire, Hagop Tchaparian, and Mount Kimbie.

Aphex Twin says anti-vax sentiments attached to song file are not his

ID3 tag on a track of his posted to SoundCloud in 2014 saying ‘vaccines are poisonous’ has been changed, said the musician

Aphex Twin has clarified his stance on vaccines after anti-vax sentiments and other conspiracy theories appeared in the ID3 tag of a song posted to SoundCloud.

A Reddit user found an ID3 tag on a song posted by the Cornish producer AKA Richard D James in 2014, reading “vaccines are poisonous, mercury, aluminum can+ autism, cancer” and also referencing 9/11, and chemtrails.

James commented on SoundCloud to explain that the message was fake after receiving messages about the text.

“I put random things in id3 tags sometimes but this one about vaccines has been changed. When you get known, people will try and bring you down, comes with the territory. I recommend trying to find common ground with your fellow humans, rather than dividing yourself into smaller and smaller groups.”

He added his thoughts on vaccines: “For what it’s worth is that I’m not against them in principle but you should look at them on a case by case basis, see what’s in them, do your research and decide if it’s right for you or your loved ones, it’s up to the individual whether you have them or not.”

The famously trickster-ish musician also said: “I should also add for future reference that if you want to know my thoughts on any topic I believe in everything and nothing simultaneously.”

The matter follows a 2020 comment on SoundCloud in which he appeared to write “‘You stupid tin foil hat wearing idiot’, said the person wearing a 2 month old soggy mask”.

Following criticism, he posted again: “I definitely don’t think Covid is a hoax, I’m just very worried about the erosion of civil and human rights and how we are to get them back.” He added: “I mean what if we the people are not happy about any other government policies? We now can’t have more than 6 people in a protest, what are we to do?”

In 2023 James released the EP Blackbox Life Recorder 21f / in a room7 F760, which was nominated for a Grammy. His last full-length album, Syro, was released in 2014.
