Trekkies have a lot to be thankful for this year as the Star Trek franchise we all know and love shows no signs of slowing down!

As of now, there are four series in production within the entire franchise. Before streaming took over in the mid 2010s, there were only five broadcast series on air including The Original Series ,  The Next Generation ,  Deep Space Nine ,  Voyager , and  Enterprise . Now, with so many additions, both animated and live-action, it seems almost impossible to keep track of what to watch next, but you’ve come to the right place.

If you’ve been wondering when and where you can watch the current and upcoming seasons of Star Trek series and learn what anticipated films are set to be made, read on to find out!

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The most recently released live-action series in the franchise received positive reviews and has already been ordered for a third season ahead of its second season release. Strange New Worlds is set a decade before the events of the original series in the 23rd century and offers up a contemporary take on the original series’ episodic storytelling and 1960s design choices.

The main cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, Bruce Horak, and Rebecca Romijn as Number One. The second season will premiere on Paramount+ on June 15 .

Star Trek: Lower Decks

The adult animated series takes place in the late 24th century in the Star Trek universe, in which Earth is part of the multi-species United Federation of Planets and focuses on Starfleet’s least important starships, the USS Cerritos.

The main cast includes Tawny Newsome, Jack Quaid, Noël Wells, Eugene Cordero, Dawnn Lewis, and Jerry O’Connell. Even though the fourth season has yet to premiere, a fifth season was ordered in March 2023 and is already in development. Season 4 is scheduled to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in Summer 2023  with a 10-episode run.

Star Trek: Prodigy

Another wildly popular animated series in the franchise, Nickelodeon’s P rodigy is returning for a second season. The main cast includes Brett Gray, Ella Purnell, Jason Mantzoukas, Angus Imrie, Dee Bradley Baker, and Kate Mulgrew.

The series, which was met with positive reviews from critics and even received a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, has been airing since 2021. While an exact release date has not yet been set, season 2 will arrive this upcoming winter on Nickelodeon and Paramount+.

Star Trek: Discovery

The live-action series begins around ten years before the events of The Original Series which aired in the mid to late ’60s. The main cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Anthony Rapp, and Mary Wiseman. A final 10-episode fifth season was ordered in January 2022 and is expected to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ in early 2024.

Star Trek 4

The long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film Star Trek Beyond was originally supposed to be released in December 2023 but has since been pushed back. It is unclear when the film will be released in theaters.

Star Trek: Section 31

This movie is based on the novels that explore the operations of the clandestine organization known as Section 31 and expected to be released on streaming platform Paramount+. The film stars Michelle Yeoh who first appeared in Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Philippa Georgiou. Yeoh returns as an alternate universe version of her character who is now named Emperor Philippa Georgiou. She’ll be the central character in this movie. It is yet to be announced when filming will start but keep your eyes peeled for a date soon!

Warp into Star Trek Day 2023 today with new animated 'very Short Treks'

The five retro-styled 'Star Trek' advertising shorts arrive starting Sept. 8, 2023

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the underrated "Star Trek: The Animated Series," which launched back in 1973 on NBC for just two seasons as a sophisticated Saturday morning cartoon with serious storytelling onboard courtesy of executive producers Gene Roddenberry and "The Original Series" writer D.C. Fontana.

To fortify CBS Studios and Paramount's official "Star Trek" Day 2023 celebrations on Friday, Sept. 8, "Trek" fans will have one more reason to cheer as the studio honors "50 Years of Star Trek Animation" with newly-minted "Star Trek: very Short Treks."

The first of these five retro-styled animated promotional spots blasts off this week for the global salute to the premiere of " Star Trek " on Sept. 8, 1966, alongside previously announced special events, as well as the first chapter of a new digital comic book series titled, "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier."

Get all the Star Trek content you can possibly handle with this free trial of Paramount Plus. Watch new shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and all the classic Trek movies and TV shows too. Plans start from $4.99/month after the trial ends.

Here's the detailed description:

"The 'very Short Treks' will feature previously announced fan-favorite characters voiced by cast members from across the 'Star Trek' universe, including icons Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru and Armin Shimerman as Quark, and a new line-up of exciting voices, including Ethan Peck as Spock, Gates McFadden as Dr. Beverly Crusher, Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura, Connor Trinneer as Trip Tucker, Bruce Horak as Hemmer, Noël Wells as Tendi and George Takei as Sulu."

Creative consultant Casper Kelly came up with the marketing idea for "Star Trek: very Short Treks." Kelly is mostly recognized for the viral online hit "Too Many Cooks," his involvement for the "Discovery"-era shorts, "Star Trek: Short Treks," and his work with Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Check out the titles and schedule of when these bite-sized "Trek" nuggets roll out:

September 8 – "Skin a Cat"

September 13 – "Holiday Party"

September 20 – "Worst Contact"

September 27 – "Holograms, All the Way Down"

October 4 – "Walk, Don’t Run"

The first "very Short Treks" animated spot and the initial installment to the "Star Trek" digital comic will appear on "Star Trek" Day, Sept. 8 at 10:00 a.m. PT / 1:00 p.m. ET exclusively on StarTrek.com and the official "Star Trek" YouTube channel.

Celebrating the best of tv, movies, and comics

Star Trek: The Animated Series is returning with new shorts featuring Riker, Quark, and Saru

At San Diego Comic Con 2023, the network announced all-new animated TV spots and an upcoming IDW comic.

It's been 50 years since one Star Trek series took us into a bold, entirely strange new world: animation. And at San Diego Comic Con 2023, Star Trek's owner CBS Studios announced a tribute to the classic Star Trek: The Animated Series in honor of its very special golden anniversary.

CBS's salute to the series comes in two parts. The first will be five all-new animated TV spots in the style of the show's 1973 animation, but featuring Star Trek characters that came after the cartoon went off the air. So far, CBS has confirmed that three Trek staples are returning to voice their characters for the TV spots; those being Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, Doug Jones as Saru, and Armin Shimerman as Quark. Check out their character designs below.

star trek animated 2023

Interestingly, the animated TV spots will be spearheaded by Casper Kelly, known for the Adult Swim viral piece Too Many Cooks.

The second part of the animated series celebration will come in the form of comics, published by Star Trek's comic homebase IDW, and also written by Casper Kelly. The issues will be available digitally on StarTrek.com at first, then show up in print later. CBS has released a first look at the comic, which you can see here:

star trek animated 2023

Judging just by the art, we can see that the comic, entitled The Scheimer Barrier, will have some sort of multiverse hopping going on, as the Lower Decks animation will be used in tandem with the 1973 style.

Star Trek: The Animated Celebration Presents The Scheimer Barrier will be available in physical form at this year's New York Comic Con, which is October 12 - 15.

Star Trek: The Animated Series is currently streaming on Paramount+ .

Star Trek Day Is Coming! Here Are The Details For This Year's Celebration

Jeri Ryan, Nichelle Nichols, Michelle Yeoh, Sonequa Martin-Green, Anson Mount, Patrick Stewart, Tawny Newsome, Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Star Trek Day poster

Ah, September: the month when the leaves start changing, students head back to school, and the world celebrates the anniversary of one of the most beloved franchises of all time. Star Trek Day is once again almost upon us, and this year's celebration includes a TV special, a prime-time re-airing of the newest "Trek" classic, and free theatrical screenings of select "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episodes.

September 8, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of "Star Trek: The Animated Series," a strange and sometimes silly saga that ushered in a new era of creativity for the then-still-young franchise. In honor of animated Trek's semicentennial, this year's Star Trek Day will have a special focus on the animation aspect of the long-running Paramount franchise. "Star Trek: Lower Decks" castmate Jerry O'Connell is set to host a special "salute to the franchise" that will include a look back at decades of "Star Trek" animation and a look forward to "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4.

The franchise is celebrating 50 years of animation

Meanwhile, in select cities across the US, UK, and Canada, fans can RSVP to "Star Trek: The Animated Celebration," an event screening of 4 "Lower Decks" episodes. The event also includes giveaways, free concessions, and other perks and surprises. Trek animation fans may also want to stop by the official "Star Trek" merch shop, where there will be collections curated for Star Trek Day and "Star Trek: TAS" specifically, and everyone can get 25% off with the code STARTREKDAY.

For those who can't make it to theaters, there are still ways to celebrate "Star Trek" from home: CBS is set to air the first two season 1 episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" in a special back-to-back presentation, so you can show your grandma who never cut cable that endearing scene where the Enterprise crew sings to a planet to make it rain. In all seriousness, though, Star Trek Day is a great opportunity for international fans, as I know plenty of Trekkies who have been frustrated by the way Paramount+ is not accessible in their region. The Star Trek Day special will actually be available free worldwide on Youtube, Twitch, Facebook, and a special website dedicated to the holiday, plus on Paramount+ and other streamers and channels in the U.S.

Here's how to get in on the fun

In addition to celebrating Trek animation, O'Connell's special will revisit memorable moments in Trek history and bid farewell to the first of the Paramount+ era Trek shows, "Star Trek: Discovery," which will end after its upcoming 5th season. The attendance information for Star Trek Day events varies depending on your location, so make sure to check out the details below so you don't miss a thing.

You can register to attend a free "Star Trek: Lower Decks" showing in Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Diego, St. Louis, Washington D.C., Vancouver, Calgary, or London via this link beginning August 24, 2023 at 9 am PT.

You can watch the Star Trek Day special in America via Paramount+, PlutoTV, Mixable, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, Pop TV, Fave TV, select CBS affiliates, and even on the Smithsonian website. Global fans can watch free at StarTrek.com/Day, or via YouTube, Twitch, or Facebook.

Finally, you can catch the first two episodes of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on CBS at 8 pm ET/PT.

More Trek-related panels

In addition to the two official Star Trek panels, there are quite a few panels related to Star Trek including official licensees, and unofficial panels related to Star Trek. Here are some of the highlights (NOTE: Some panels have been canceled).

How to Boldly Go into the Star Trek Universe – 1:00pm – 2:00pm Grand 12 & 13, Marriott Marquis

With Discovery, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and Picard, Star Trek is going strong after 57 years. However, with so much Trek and such little time, it’s overwhelming to know what is essential viewing. With over a dozen movies, several series, and now all the streaming content, where does someone new to Star Trek start? Moderator Tony B Kim (Hero Within, Crazy 4 Comic Con) leads this fun and helpful discussion with Star Trek pros Giraffe (Strange New Podcast), Myrriah Gossett (Star Trek Discovery Podcast), and Clyde Haynes (Star Trek Discovery Podcast).

Star Trek: More Bold Than Ever Before [IDW] – 2:00pm – 1:00pm Room 28DE

Never before has Star Trek been bigger (or bloodier)! IDW Group Editor Heather Antos and writers Chris Cantwell, Collin Kelly, and Jackson Lanzing give an inside look into Star Trek: Day of Blood, the first ever Star Trek comics crossover event. Plus: Marc Guggenheim, Sam Maggs, Malachi Ward, Chirs Sequiera, and Liana Kangas share all the exciting things happening across IDW’s line of Star Trek comics.

Inglorious Treksperts Live: Free Enterprise at 25 – 4:00pm – 5:00pm Room 5AB

The hosts of the Star Trek podcast Inglorious Treksperts present a 25th anniversary tribute to the ultimate love letter to Star Trek, the beloved cult classic Free Enterprise, released in theaters in 1999 and starring William Shatner and Eric McCormack. Panelists will be sharing never-before-seen clips and footage from the film that proved Captain Kirk was cooler than Han Solo. Featuring Inglorious Treksperts hosts Mark A. Altman (author, Star Trek: The Fifty-Year Mission; writer/producer, Free Enterprise), Daren Dochterman (associate producer, Star Trek: The Motion Picture—Director’s Edition), Ashley E. Miller (writer, Thor, X-Men: First Class), and Robert Meyer Burnett (director/writer, Free Enterprise, The Burnettwork), along with a special panelist or two.

It’s Alive, Jim! Evolutionary Biology in Star Trek – 8:00pm – 9:00pm Room 28DE

Did you ever wonder if giant space jellyfish could ever realistically be a thing? Could our parasites evolve to take over Starfleet Command? Or computers be reprogrammed by sentient yeast? Would aliens really just look like us with pointy ears or ridge noses? Since the beginning of Star Trek, exploring strange new worlds has been synonymous with meeting fascinating new species—friendly or less friendly . . . Star Trek shows us life as we know it and as we’ve never seen it before, and examining the science behind both can teach us a lot about where we come from, where we’re going, and what we might meet—out there. Dr. Ashley Poust (paleontologist at the San Diego Natural History Museum), Dr. Danielle de Carle (researcher and lecturer at the University of Toronto), and Dr. Amanda Jack (biochemist and biophysicist at SyntheX) take a deep dive into the reality, the fiction, and the possibilities of this Trek-tastic biology these last 56 years. Moderated by Giraffe of the Star Trek podcast Strange New Pod.

Dr. Drea Letamendi (psychologist at UCLA, host of The Arkham Sessions Podcast) and Brian Ward (host of The Arkham Sessions Podcast) take a deep dive into the psychology of Star Trek: Picard’s final season with showrunner Terry Matalas, co-executive producer Christopher Monfette, and co-producer Matt Okumura. This lively conversation will celebrate what makes Trek both illuminating and entertaining and will cover powerfully emotive themes such as resilient leadership, family conflict, and finding purpose in the face of failures, risks, and dangers only imagined in the final frontier.

Star Trek: Picard—Unofficial!: Backstage and Between the Cracks – 1:00pm – 2:00pm Room 24ABC

Larry “Dr. Trek” Nemecek (Portal 47, The Trek Files) moderates a show-n-tell and tall-tales panel presentation by two of the hands-on art directors who brought you the magnificent sets of ST: Picard’s Season 3, Liz Kloczkowski and Kit Stølen. From the alien worlds to the storied Enterprise-D bridge recreation, they’re bringing lots of backstage images and answers to your questions!

Roxann Dawson Explains Why She Turned Down Chance To Direct New Star Trek TV

Will we get official word on if STFC will have an ENT arc after VOY wraps up. I hope so. I want Shran.

I guess there’s some optimism that S31 will see the light of day…..some day.

It’s nice that they have so much going on considering the strikes going on.

I wonder if the Animation panel would have featured some creatives/cast from Lower Decks and/or Prodigy if it weren’t for the strikes (and Prodigy’s cancelation).

I’m not watching anything made after 1965 until the strike is over.

Hoping we get some info on the Section 31 film.

Gotta boycott conventions until the strike is over.

Animation Celebration? I feel like they are missing something….

“ With Discovery, Lower Decks, Strange New Worlds, and Picard, Star Trek is going strong after 57 years.”

Omitting Prodigy while still citing the (concluded) Picard , huh? Damn.

Yeah, they almost seem to have something against it for some reason.

How is the SAG strike going to affect the convention? I’ve read in other places that actors cannot attend the panels during the strike. Is that correct because if it is, it fundamentally changes everything.

The strike also means that actors are not allowed to promote work they have shot already. So for example, they cannot talk about the upcoming season of Discovery or Lower Decks during the Star Trek Universe panel.

What seems to be less clear is whether actors can make personal appearances at a convention and talk about previous work that has long since aired, e.g. someone like Armin Shimerman talking about DS9 at a convention. They are allowed to appear at conventions and, for example, pose for pictures with fans, but it may be that they simply cannot answer any work-related questions.

Everything We Know About Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

The third season of the newest Star Trek series is back in production after strike delays. What can viewers expect to see?

Star Trek has been one of the most iconic sci-fi properties in entertainment for more than half a century. Since 1966, viewers have boldly gone where no viewers have before on board the Enterprise and other starships. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is the eleventh and most recent full-length series in the franchise. It tells the story of Captain Christopher Pike, the captain of the Enterprise and immediate predecessor to James T. Kirk, in the decade preceding The Original Series .

Its critical and fan success led to a third season's order in March 2023, months before the second launched. Filming was scheduled to begin in mid-2023 before the dual WGA and SAG strikes pushed production back. Now, with things up and running again, what do we know? How will the new season continue the story of the first two? Which main cast members will return, who might not, and will any new faces join them? What else do we know about Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Returning Cast Members

Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Trekkies should rest assured that every main cast member from the second season is set to return in Season 3. Anson Mount is back in the lead role as Pike, a role he originated in Star Trek: Discovery . Ethan Peck portrays the younger version of Spock , memorably brought to life by Leonard Nimoy in The Original Series . Spock originally worked under Pike before later joining Kirk. A young Christine Chapel is played by Jess Bush, succeeding Majel Barrett – wife of creator Gene Roddenberry – from the original.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds cast interview

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Best Moments

Younger versions of Uhura, played by Celia Rose Gooding, and Number One, played by Rebecca Romijn, will return. The late Nichelle Nichols played Uhura, while Majel Barrett also played Number One in The Original Series ' unaired pilot. Christina Chong as La'an Noonien-Singh, Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas, and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M'Benga round out the rest of the returning main cast.

Paul Wesley will return again as the younger James T. Kirk, alongside another famous face from the original run. Scotty, now played by Martin Quinn, was beamed up in the Season 2 finale and will return to the show in the upcoming batch of episodes. Currently, there's no additional information on any new characters or other returnees from the first two outings. We should expect more casting news to come out as production continues.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season 3 Plot Details

While we have no concrete information about what we might see plot-wise, it's safe to assume that Season 3 will pick up right where the second season finale left off. Season 2 ended with the arrival of the Gorn after their appearance was teased all season. The Enterprise crew attempts to rescue colony survivors under the Gorn's siege, but it appears that the Gorn beat them to it. Complicating matters was the fact that the Gorn attacked a colony where both Marie Batel and Christine Chapel were visiting. No one can for sure say what happens to the colonists by the end of the episode, though it's safe to say we haven't seen the last of them.

Star Trek Strange New Worlds Season Two Cast

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Biggest Surprises and Twists in Season 2

Earlier in the season, Spock was accidentally turned into a human for a brief time, which led to him and Chapel accepting their feelings for one another. Characters dealt with their own personal and interconnected traumas, and La'an and Kirk even formed a romance in an alternate universe, modern-day Toronto. The finale also introduced us to young junior officer Montgomery Scott. In an interview with Variety , executive producer and writer Henry Alonso Myers and showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained the decision to feature another original series veteran,

"It just sort of came up as we were talking about the story. Initially, it had been someone else completely. And then Akiva and I were talking, and I was like, “Well, what about Scotty?” And then we both fell in love with the idea."

A Celebration of the Franchise

Myers and Goldsman also teased that we could see more characters from The Original Series return if the show's run continues for a few more years. Season 2 took risks; who would have thought Star Trek would put on a full musical episode ? The animated Star Trek: Lower Decks also received the live-action treatment in a praised crossover episode. This show is so much more than just a prequel to The Original Series . It's a celebration of all things Star Trek and how the franchise still has life after 55+ years. We should expect those same innovative storytelling techniques in Season 3.

However, there will be a longer than usual wait for Season 3. Production is slated to run from December 2023 through July 2024, delayed by the Hollywood strikes . However, if it follows the pattern of the first two seasons, it should be well worth the wait. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is available to stream on Paramount+.

The Sequel to One of 2023's Best Animated Movies Has Its Release Date

L ast year brought us lots of fantastic animated films and while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was the outlier in terms of Oscar nominations, it might be the first to get a sequel .

Paramount just announced a bunch of future release dates and among them was an October 9, 2026 date for the sequel to Mutant Mayhem. Director Jeff Rowe will return, as will the producers from Point Grey including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. There’s no word yet on the title or additional cast members, but the previous film ended with the reveal of Shredder, so we at least know one new character who’ll appear.

Speaking to io9 last year , Rowe did tease that at a certain point while making Mutant Mayhem, everyone involved had a pretty good idea they’d be coming back for a sequel. “There [was a] point where we were like, ‘This is coming together pretty good. We’re liking what we’re making. We’re not blowing it. We’re not whiffing it,’” he said. “So likely, based on the importance of this IP to Paramount, we will likely be making a sequel or have the opportunity to explore more things later. And it wasn’t confirmed and it’s still not confirmed. [ Note : It was later confirmed. ] But, you know, I think I think everybody wants to spend more time with these characters and I think there’s a lot of things in the lore that we haven’t been able to address yet.”

The film will come out after a new Paramount+ animated series featuring the actors who voiced the characters in the film, which will be out this summer. You can watch a trailer for that at this link.

Long story short, this new version of the Turtles is here for the long haul.

Screen Rant

The biggest animated movie on netflix right now is remarkably similar to a pixar film from 2 years ago.

A 2023 animated movie quickly climbed to the #1 spot on Netflix, but it's inevitable to notice how similar it is to a recent Pixar success.

  • Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken quickly climbed Netflix's Top 10, but it closely resembles Pixar movies Turning Red and Luca.
  • DreamWorks' movie explores generational trauma and mother-daughter relationships, but loses focus on emotional depth in favor of a predictable plot.
  • Similar to Turning Red and Luca, Ruby Gillman features creatures adapting to human life, but with an unoriginal plot and a predictable villain.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken quickly climbed up to Netflix’s Top 10 and held the #1 spot for days, but upon closer inspection, this movie is remarkably similar to a Pixar movie released two years ago. Pixar is a powerhouse in the world of animation, and as such, it’s home to many of the most popular and successful animated movies in film history. Pixar’s success has led to a lot of competition, and one of its biggest competitors over the years has been DreamWorks Animation.

The studio rose to fame with the Shrek franchise and has maintained its popularity with movies and franchises like Madagascar , Kung Fu Panda , and Trolls . DreamWorks released two movies in 2023: Trolls Band Together and Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken , with the former performing well at the box office and the latter being a commercial flop. However, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken got a new chance after its arrival on Netflix in February 2024, quickly becoming the most-watched movie on the platform, but this wider attention has also brought out its flaws, such as how similar it is to a recent Pixar movie.

10 Biggest Reasons DreamWorks' New Animated Movie Bombed So Badly At The Box Office

Turning red is what ruby gillman, teenage kraken tried (& failed) to be.

Turning Red

Turning Red

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken sets up a story of generational trauma & mother-daughter relationship but quickly forgets about it.

In 2022, Pixar released Turning Red , which followed the steps of the three movies before it and was directly released on Disney+. While this wasn’t beneficial to its box office stats, Turning Red was a critical success . Directed by Domee Shi, Turning Red takes the audience back to 2002 in Toronto, Ontario, to meet Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a 13-year-old Chinese-Canadian student who lives with her father and her overprotective and strict mother, Ming (Sandra Oh). One day, Mei discovers that she transforms into a giant red panda when she experiences any strong emotion as a result of a family curse.

Luckily for Mei, she counts on the support of her best friends Miriam, Priya, and Abby, who help her embrace her red panda. Mei’s journey is more complex than that, as she also has to deal with generational trauma and the relationship with her mother , making Turning Red a layered and emotional story. Now, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken follows the title character (Lana Condor), who lives among humans with her parents and has been prohibited by her mother from going into the ocean. When she breaks this rule, Ruby discovers that she’s the direct descendant of kraken royalty, and her true form is that of a giant kraken.

Ruby, like Mei, makes a huge family discovery that directly impacts her physically and emotionally, and they both had tense relationships with their mothers, who were too overprotective. Ruby’s friends are even reminiscent of Mei’s friends, but they don’t take an active role in Ruby’s journey. Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken sets up a story of generational trauma and mother-daughter relationship in its first act but quickly forgets about it to focus on a predictable story with an underwhelming villain and conflict between krakens and mermaids.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken Is Also Similar To Pixar’s Luca

Jacob Tremblay as Luca Paguro transforms into a sea creature in Luca.

Turning Red is not the only Pixar movie that Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken is similar to. Before Turning Red , Pixar released Luca , set on the Italian Riviera in 1959. Luca is the story of the title character (Jacob Tremblay), a young sea monster boy who takes human form while on land but goes back to his monster form when coming into contact with water. With his friend Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), Luca explores the town of Portorosso, getting to experience life as a human despite his parents forbidding him from ever approaching the surface.

Ruby Gilman, Teenage Kraken and Luca are similar in terms of their main characters being sea creatures looking to live a normal life among humans, and with their parents keeping them away from the ocean and land, respectively. However, and just as mentioned above, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken quickly left its deepest and most emotional threads aside in favor of an unoriginal and predictable plot with an equally predictable villain, while Luca , like Turning Red , fully focused on the personal journeys of its characters.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

DreamWorks Animation presents Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, an animated action-adventure film that follows high-schooler Ruby Gillman as she tries to fit in at Oceanside High. When Ruby finally discovers that she's directly descended from the protectors of the seas, the Krakens, she'll have to dig deep to protect her school and the oceans themselves from the popular but dangerous mermaid, Chelsea.

The obituary also included an essay written by Mitchell himself, titled "Connect."

"When I die, when I leave this life, I want to become a tree, a Ginko, White pine, Jacaranda, Lemon, Cedar, Oak, Myrtle or Maple," he wrote. "I want to be buried under the roots, so I can be soaked up, all my matter, my energy, my love, my laughter, my tears and I want to reach up through the branches and touch the night sky. I want to twinkle with the stars and when the earth turns, I want to feel the sun on the face of my leaves."

Mitchell, a Toronto native, made his onscreen acting debut in the early aughts, appearing in Showtime's "Leap Year." He later played Eric Green on the series "Jericho" and Sam Lucas on "Ghost Whisperer." In 2019, he starred on the CW's "Nancy Drew" and in "Captain Marvel."

Meanwhile, he had begun appearing on "Star Trek: Discovery," playing four roles between 2017 and 2021: Klingons Kol, Kol's dad Kol-Sha and Tenavik, and later, as he began to suffer the effects of ALS, Aurellio, a human character who used a hoverchair, or wheelchair-like device. Mitchell also portrayed several other roles on the animated series "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Throughout his time on the franchise, he occasionally made appearances at "Star Trek" fan conventions.

Mitchell last appeared onscreen in a recurring role on the FX series "The Old Man," which stars Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow.

Mitchell was diagnosed with ALS, a neurological disease that causes muscle weakness and paralysis, in 2018 and had used a wheelchair since 2019.

"For five and a half years, Ken faced a series of awful challenges from ALS," his obituary stated. "And in truest Ken fashion, he managed to rise above each one with grace and commitment to living a full and joyous life in each moment. He lived by the principles that each day is a gift and that we never walk alone. His life is a shining example of how full one can be when you live with love, compassion, humor, inclusion and community. Ken was an inspirational work of art to all the hearts he touched."

Among those were his friends and colleagues.

"Rest in peace, Ken. Was just thinking of you," Ethan Peck, who plays Spock on Star Trek: Discovery, commented on the obituary, using an emoji of the Vulcans' "Live Long and Prosper" hand gesture.

And Jonathan Frakes, who directed several episodes in the series and played William Riker on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," wrote, "One of the best RIP."

The Sequel to One of 2023's Best Animated Movies Has Its Release Date

Teenage mutant ninja turtles: mutant mayhem is getting its sequel in 2026..

Image for article titled The Sequel to One of 2023's Best Animated Movies Has Its Release Date

Last year brought us lots of fantastic animated films and while Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem was the outlier in terms of  Oscar nominations, it might be the first to get a sequel .

Paramount just announced a bunch of future release dates and among them was an October 9, 2026 date for the sequel to Mutant Mayhem . Director Jeff Rowe will return, as will the producers from Point Grey including Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. There’s no word yet on the title or additional cast members, but the previous film ended with the reveal of Shredder, so we at least know one new character who’ll appear.

Speaking to io9 last year , Rowe did tease that at a certain point while making Mutant Mayhem , everyone involved had a pretty good idea they’d be coming back for a sequel.
